Due to changing geology, rib bolting is an ever-changing problem in ground control. With the economic status of the coal market, the need for safely increasing productivity in rib bolting is at an all-time high. The current solutions used in the market often require a long installation time (e.g. if collapsed holes have to be redrilled) or result in poor quality installations that can lead to insufficient ground control. A new bolting product based on the simple screw principle has been developed to bolt ribs faster and with a more repeatable, higher level of installation quality. The paper covers the product invention and development, the fastening principle and its advantages over current systems and first experiences in the market. The first underground trials have shown that the screw anchors can be installed safely and efficiently, often faster than traditional methods. The screw anchor does not suffer from conventional bolting issues such as collapsed holes due to bad ribs. The screw anchors are designed to obtain steel failure and load testing underground shows consistent fastening in all types of conditions.

AN EXTENSIVE characterization was conducted on the neutral oil components in a low-temperature bituminous coal tar. A total of tai individual compounds identified with respect to individual isomers, and at least 55 other compounds were indicated to be present. The amounts were determined in all instances. A comparison of isomeric distribution in the tar with thermo-dynamic equilibrium distribution, and kinetic distributions indicated that the composition of the tar largely reflected the structure of the coal from which it was formed. Detailed descriptions are presented for the separatory and qualitative and quantitative procedures for the characterization of the neutral oil component. These include micro fractional vacuum distillation, displacement liquid chromatography, gas-liquid chromatography, countercurrent distribution, and infrared and ultraviolet spectrophotometry. Descriptions are given for the synthesis of authentic specimens of alkylindenes, The ultraviolet and infrared spectra of 134 polycyclic compounds, ranging from alkylindenes to alkylphenanthrenes, either found in the distillable neutral oil, or thought likely to be present, are also given.

Methods for simulation of settler reactions, matte-slag separation and matte settling in copper flash smelting have been examined. The reaction, separation and settling phenomena of slightly oxidized chalcopyrite samples and cuprous sulfide-magnetite mixtures in fayalite type slags were examined at about 1300°C under inert atmosphere. Two methods based on introduction of molten samples of oxidized chalcopyrite concentrates or synthetic matte-magnetite mixtures onto the surface of molten iron silicate slag were tested. In the first method the samples were water quenched and polished specimens were studied and analysed using light optical microscope, scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive spectrometer. In the second method processes taking place after the introduction of samples onto the slag are followed "in situ" using X-ray transmission image monitoring. Great differences were observed in separation and settling behaviour of low and high grade copper mattes produced as a results of interaction of initial samples and slag.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory investigations with the objective of developing an alternative process for recovering cobalt and copper from complex sulfide concentrates. Processes currently used depend largely upon precipitation techniques to remove impurities and recover cobalt from sulfate liquors prepared by oxidative pressure leaching of the sulfide concentrates. The Bureau conducted bench-scale research on a process for treating cobaltite concentrates, comprising (1) oxidative pressure leaching, (2) jarosite precipitation followed by H202 oxidation and pH control to remove iron and arsenic, (3) copper solvent extraction with a mixed hydroxyoxime-amine extractant, (4) copper electrowinning from recirculating acidic strip liquor, (5) selective cobalt extraction from copper solvent extraction raffinate with a phosphinic acid extractant, and (6) electrowinning of cobalt from a recirculating weak acid strip liquor. Overall cobalt and copper recoveries were 91.7 and 84.1 pct, respectively. Electrowon products assayed 99.8 pct Co and 99.89 pct Cu.

As a result, solution purification was improved, additional dust precipitator capacity was made available and a new zinc casting plant was installed. The effects of these and other changes are discussed and the expenditure and benefits reviewed. HistoryThe operation of the Flin Flon metallurgical complex including an electrolytic zinc plant commenced in October 1930. The design of the zinc plant was based on that of the Commonwealth Mining and Smelting Company at Trail, British Columbia, the Anaconda Great Falls Montana Plant and the Electrolytic Zinc Company plant at Risdon, Tasmania.The plant began with a design capacity of 60 tons per day and currently produces 255 tons per day. Since plant start-up, approximately 3.5 million ton s of zinc metal have been produced, most of it exceeding special high-grade specifications.IntroductionThe facility incorporates the basic process steps of roasting, leaching, purification, electrowinning and casting. Figure I details the flowsheet. During the late 1970s, management recognized that in order for the zinc plant to continue operating, it was necessary to introduce cost-effective practices.Study groups, consisting of design engineers and operations personnel, were formed to investigate the details of plant revisions.The objectives were to improve productivity by reducing manual labour, reducing energy usage, increasing zinc recovery, increasing metal output and reducing costs.This paper details the changes made during the period 1979to 1986 and shows how these changes have affected the productivity and economics of the zinc plant operation."

Extensive spectroscopic data are needed in making reliable vibrational assignments for use in calculating thermodynamic functions of polyatomic molecules. The fundamental vibrations of organic molecules may be observed at any wavelength from 2.5 to 200 microns (micron = µ = 10-4 centimeters), but most often in the region from 3µ to 50µ. Raman spectra generally cover the range in which fundamental vibrations occur, but equally important infrared spectra usually are not measured at wavelengths longer than 25µ. This limitation results because most infrared spectra are determined for analytical purposes, which seldom require information outside the region 2µ to 25µ. Measurements of infrared spectra in the range 15µ to 35µ recently were begun by the Bureau of Mines to obtain data needed in making vibrational assignments. This report presents the spectra of the following thirteen compounds: Tetrahydrofuran, 1-methylpyrrole, piperidine, 2-methylpyridine, 3-miuthylpyridine, 2-propanethiol, cyclopentanethiol, 2-methyl-2-butanethiol, 3,3-dimethyl-2-thiabutane, cyclohexanethiol, cyclopentyl-l-thiaethane, 2,4-dimethyl-3-thiapentane, and hexamethyldisiloxane.

In a certain sense, the explosives industry began in the 13th century with the invention of black powder, which is an intimate mixture of sulfur, carbon black or charcoal, and potassium or sodium nitrate. For several centuries thereafter, black powder was the sole general purpose energetic material, serving as an igniter, propelling charge, bursting charge, and blasting agent. By today’s standards, black powder is totally inadequate for the latter three functions, but its use continues as an igniter for propellant charges because of its unique ability to ignite and burn under ambient conditions. The history of the development of black powder was reviewed by Rose (1980).

THE first session was held in the small hall of the Academy of Music, on Tuesday evening, February 18th, 1879. The proceedings were opened by the reading, by President Eckley B. Coxe, of the following Address : SECONDARY TECHNICAL EDUCATION. Technical education is a subject to which both the American Institute of Mining Engineers and the American Society of Civil Engineers have of late years given much attention, and deservedly so. We all remember the admirable address of our former President, Mr. Holley, at the Washington meeting, upon this subject, and the very interesting reunion of the two societies in Philadelphia for its discussion. The problem to the solution of which the meeting devoted its attention was, "Shall the practical education of the engineer in the mine, in the rolling-mill, in the workshop, or in the field, precede, be contemporaneous with, or follow his theoretical studies in the technical school ?" I do not propose to add anything to what was so admirably said by so many of our leading engineers on that occasion ; but I shall ask your attention to another question in technical education, which seems to me equally worthy of our consideration, and which, I am sorry to say, has as yet attracted but little attention in this country. It is, "Shall the apprentices (I call them so for the want of a better general name), who are growing up and learning their trades in and around our mines and works, and from whose ranks the master mechanics and foremen of the future must be taken-shall they be provided with some means of obtaining as much theoretical training as may be necessary to enable them properly to understand the various processes and operations that they may be called upon to superintend, and not be obliged to pick up, as best they may, here a little and there a little truth mingled with much error?" In the former case, those who have the ability and industry to avail themselves of the advantages that should be offered to them would fit themselves to become real foremen, men who would understand and appreciate the true engineer and his methods. Roof bolter operators may be exposed to high respirable dust concentrations on continuous miner sections with blowing face ventilation when bolting is performed downwind of the continuous miner. One solution to reduce the high respirable dust concentrations is to use a canopy air curtain (CAC) to deliver clean air from a filtered blower fan directly to the bolter operators under the canopies. The influence of CAC installation on the airflow and dust dispersion around the location of the roof bolter operator can be evaluated by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

It is generally accepted by British mining engineers that coal will continue to be worked by the. advancing or retreating longwall system for the foreseeable future. At the coal face, the emphasis will be on better machine utilization; increased equipment reliability; modular design and more standardization; remote control and monitoring; and a continuing drive to increase productivity and safety. Improvements at the face can be sustained only if there are corresponding improvements in efficiency elsewhere in the mine. Coal handling systems, for example, must be able to accept increased tonnages without creating bottlenecks. As workings move further from the shafts, the time taken to transport men and materials must be kept within reasonable limits. Development drivages must he on schedule to be ready for the planned opening of new faces, and face ends must keep up with faster moving faces.

In the field of stain-less steels, there are about forty different types of alloys that are used where corrosion is a •problem.A stainless product is ordinarily selected because it offers one or more of the following qualities:(1) Resistance to corrosion (2) Resistance to oxidation at high temperatures (3) Good mechanical properties at room temperature (4) Good mechanical properties at high or low temperature (5) Attractive appearance (6) Ease of maintenanceToday we are interested in discussing the stainless steel family of alloys because of their .ability to resist corrosion. We• will not try to explain the Theory of Corrosion. Let us assume that, when surface potential and oxide formations are properly controlled, iron will resist attack in various chemi.cal solutions. The addition of alloying elements to iron does this for stainless steels. The principal stainless alloys used by various Canadian industries are listed in the accompanying Table."

A study has been made of the use of ThO2-Y2O3 solid electrolytes to determine activity of chromium in Fe-Cr and Ni-Cr alloys in the temperature range 1300° to 1700°K. This method has been shown to give results which agree with the best vapor pressure measurements. SEVERAL investigations1"5 have been made of chromium activities in Fe-Cr alloys. Most of these have been made by vapor pressure measurements using knudsen cell techniques while one has been made using gas equilibration with H2/H2O gas mixtures. In the present investigation electromotive force measurements have been made on this system using a thoria yttria solid electrolyte. This system was -chosen to establish the technique of measurement at low oxygen potentials, before extending it to Fe-Ni-Cr alloys. The cell used was Pt Cr • Cr2O3 ilThO2 • Y2O3 llalloy • Cr2O3 IPt Since the oxygen pressure of the chromium-chromic oxide mixture lay in the range 10"19 to 1027 atm in the temperature range investigated, thoria yttria electrolytes were used. It was soon found during the investigation that considerable care was required to prepare satisfactory electrolytes and a study was made to find the best method of preparing pellets of TI1O2-Y2O3 solid solution of as near theoretical density as possible. Various compositions in the range 2 to 15 mole pct Y2O3 were studied but the experimental measurements were made with electrolytes containing 4 to 5 pct Y2O3. The method of preparation finally adopted was to use thorium oxalate and yttria as raw materials. The thorium oxalate was decomposed at 900°C for 6 hr to give a reactive powder. This powder was then mixed with the appropriate amount of yttria and ground in an agate mortar for about 4 hr. The powder was moistened with absolute alcohol as a lubricant and pressed in a metal die at a pressure of 7 tons per sq in. The pellets were then heated at 1100°C for 24 hr followed by 24 hr at 1250°C. After this firing cycle the material was reground and repelleted and again fired at 1100° and 1250°C followed by heating for 7 days at 1600°C. It was found in later experiments that a further firing of 4 hr at 2000°C improved the density further and gave pellets of only 2 pct porosity. After firing, the pellets were polished on emery paper and finally with the 2 µ diamond paste. The polishing was followed by a final firing of 24 hr at 1500°C. Investigation showed that this final treatment minimized reaction between the electrolytes and chromium oxide. It was believed that this was because of a lowering of the surface energy of the electrolyte surface. "Therma1 and chemical treatment of respirable size silica dusts samples is shown to induce marked changes in their hemolytic activity. The cytotoxicity of crystalline a-quartz (Min-U-Sil), and fumed silica (Cab-0- Sil) particles, as measured by a hemolytic activity protocol, is decreased by calcination and can be related to the dehydroxylation of the surface. The hemolytic activity of P-cristobalite particles of respirable dust si7.e was also determined and found to be lower than that of a-quartz. The change in the surface structure resulting from thermal treatment is detectable by photo-acoustic infrared spectroscopy and zeta-potential measurements. The absorption band in the 3200-4000 cm-1 frequency region of both Cab-0-Sil and MinU- Sil disappears upon heat treatment while a sharp band, identified with single silanol groups, at 3750 cm-1 increases in intensity. The zeta potential-pH profile, in the pH range of 4.0-7 .0, of the calcined, siloxane surfaced particles is more negative than that of material with a silanol surface.The cytotoxicity of the crystalline and fumed silica dusts was also found to be strongly dependent on particle size. Fumed silica of large surface area (small particle size) exhibits an initial increase in hemolytic activity upon calcination. This result confirms other experimental observations pointing to a particle size of maximum toxicity. INTRODOCTIONThe toxicity of silica and other mineral particles, as manifested by their role in inducing pneumoconiosis, fibrosis, silicosis and other pulmonary disorders is largely traceable to the characteristics of particle surfaces and to particle morphology. The great wealth of data on the physical and chemical properties of silica is still insufficient for a comprehensive understanding of the specific parameters to be associated with fibrogenic activity and, correspondingly, with the optimum means for characterizing and quantifying the toxicity of dusts, and the design of possible preventive or therapeutic methods.The great diversity of parameters that have been proposed and tested for correlation with cytotoxicity suggest that more than one mechanism may be involved in the fibrotic activity of silica particles. The crystalline structure of the material (more active tridymite versus less active crisobalite and passive stishovite), freshly formed surfaces and free radicals associated therewith, silicic acid adsorbed onto silica surfaces, the concentration of hydroxyl groups at silica surfaces, particle size and morphology, among other properties, have been investigated and found to conelate in tests of cytotoxicity."

Mass Blasts are generally required at the completion of longhole stoping cycles to maximise the recovery of ore from a specific orebody. During the course of mining, the practice is to leave pillars of ore to support the opening left by extracted ore and to mitigate stresses from working areas of the stope. These pillars usually contain ore that has been included in the resource evaluation and is highly valuable to the mining operation. Due to their stressed nature, the removal of pillars by conventional blasting techniques, through small blasts, can result in pillars being reduced beyond their critical size and ultimately failing, rendering the ore unrecoverable. The AurionGold Kanowna Belle Gold Mine operates a Mine to Mill philosophy. This philosopy requires the fine tuning of blasting to provide the best possibe ore feed at the highest grade for mill productivity. This means that ore to the mill must be well fragmented from blasting that provides high extraction rates from draw points, with minimal dilution from overbreak or fall off, and sized to maximise SAG mill throughput. The AT04 Mass Blast contained significant ore reserves which were required to meet gold production targets. KBGB needed the AT04 Mass Blast to perform as well as if not better than conventional stope blasts to maintain mill production. This paper describes the circumstances, planning philosophy, techniques, including the use of Electronic Initiation Systems and Bulk Emulsion Explosives, and results that provided a highly successful outcome.

Petro-diesel is a common collector for coal flotation, but the partitioning of diesel range organics (DROs) in process streams has not been widely studied. Preliminary research suggested that under normal dosing schemes total residual DRO contents in process waters should be limited to the sub-ppm water-soluble fraction (WSF). Further, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) should partition proportionately with DROs. The purpose of this study was to confirm these findings in laboratory flotation tests. Total DRO and specific PAH contents were measured in the waters associated with the concentrate and tailings streams. The results show that concentrate waters consistently had higher amounts of DROs than tailing waters. Moreover, the DRO contents in both streams generally increased with increasing diesel dosage. In line with preliminary research, DROs appeared to be limited to the WSF, and PAHs tended to partition proportionately with DROs. Under typical operating conditions, it appears that residual DROs should not present an environmental concern, but conditions should be avoided that allow significant overdosing of diesel.

Currently mineral resources evaluation is firstly expressed in terms of volume. Next the resources are transformed into tonnes by using an average bulk density applied to the whole deposit or, in some other circumstances, various different densities to distinct geological domains. Previous work in uranium, copper and nickel deposits used linear correlation between grades and bulk density to derive the density. Geophysics methods are also another good way to obtain density indirectly.These approaches do not take into account that two samples with the same grade but with different bulk densities can characterise different sample supports, leading to severe bias in grade and tonne estimates. It is important that the systematic measurements of bulk density are included into the estimation process, particularly when density is not correlated with the grades. Additionally, the extra time and costs involved in obtaining the bulk density data have made the mining industry disregard it.This study reports the impact in resource estimates by using a methodology that includes the bulk density variability. It involves the determination of a variability model for the bulk density and another model for the composite that was weighted by density as well as by its length. Next, these variables are estimated by kriging and the final grade estimates are obtained. The tonnages are obtained with the bulk density estimates. The conventional methodology was also applied and both estimates are compared to the reconciliation data from a major copper deposit. The results show a significant difference between the tonnage and grade estimates obtained from these two methodologies.The results show that considering density variability when compositing leads to a more accurate methodology resulting in better grade and tonnage estimates locally and globally.

"The demand for barite has increased greatly in the last 10 years, especially during World War II. Depletion of oil reserves and subsequent increase in deep drilling created a heavy demand by the oil industry for barite to be used as drilling mud. The great increase in demand for barite gave impetus to the development of a, deposit of impure barite near, Magnet Cove in Hot Spring County, Ark.The critical condition of the national barite supply early in 1944 led the War Production Board to recommend that the Bureau of Mines attempt to prove the existence of a large reserve tonnage of barite in the Magnet Cove area and arch for new deposits. To carry out this program, the Bureau explored on newly reported. Barite deposits in southern Montgomery County, Ark. The Gap Mountain, Fancy Hill, and Sulphur Mountain barite deposits were investigated. Eight diamond core-drill holes and 1,336 linear feet of surface trenching were completed, and barite samples obtained were analyzed, A study of the Montgomery County barnse district indicates that the lenticular bodies of barite replace a favorable host rock near the base of the Stanley shale formation. Barite is exposed along the side of anticlinal mountains where erosion has truncated the beds on the limbs of the associated synclines. An appreciable amount of barite suitable for commercial use has been indicated by trenching and core drilling. The Gap Mountain and Fancy Hill deposits are controlled by the Magnet Cove Barium Corp. and Baroid Sales Division of National Load Co., respectively. The ore is similar to that of the Magnet Cove area and is amenable to concentration by a flotation process. Mining of these deposits had not been begun by the time the Bureau completed its exploration project."

The essential features of the zinc concentrate roasting installation at the Risdon Works by the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Ltd. are given.The problem of maintenance of ignition in down-draught zinc concentrate flash roasters is discussed, and a solution offered.A successful and economical method of using by-product oxygen for raising the roasting efficiency of hearth roasters is described. Three methods of utilizing oxygen for the same purpose in flash roasting are detailed, and their relative merit, considered.INTRODUCTIONThe zinc sulphide concentrate used at the Risdon Works is roasted autogenously for removal of sulphur in two hearth roasters, and four flash roasters. The hearth roasters are of modified Skinner type with eleven hearths. They were designed, and are used, for roasting mixtures of relatively low sulphide content. Their design and operation have been described elsewhere (Forster, 1949).The flash roasters are down-draughted furnaces with cross-section and rabbling equipment based on the hearth roaster design, and the process is similar to that developed by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Ltd. (Cominco) at Trail, B.C. (Stimmel, Hannay, and McBean, 1936).These furnaces are 20 ft. in diameter. They have three drying hearths through which hot gas is drawn from the combustion chamber by the burner fan. The combustion chamber is 2'1 ft. high above the collecting hearth (27 ft. in No. 4 unit), and the discharge hearth below it is 6 ft. high, so that a large gas offtake is possible. Four rabble arms for each hearth are carried on a central column. Dried, ground concentrate, and the air for roasting it, are fed to a burner...

As mines grow deeper, the problem of ground control becomes one of increasing importance. The literature on the subject has grown extensively in the past few years, but is still far from conclusive. Detailed and precise observations are on record covering most phases of the problem, and control measures have progressed to the point where, in a large measure, they are effective. The success of methods to date must be attributed to the efforts which have been exerted to reduce convergence of stope walls and to the realization that a regular progression of stope faces approaching longwall has a beneficial effect. This paper attempts to explain the relationship between these two factors and the general problem of ground control. The problem at present lacks the co-ordination of the practical with the scientific outlook, but fortunately as time goes on there are indications that our scientific friends are becoming more interested and more familiar with the practical issues involved. Opinions vary widely regarding the mechanism of the problem and there are several schools of thought, two only of which will be discussed. One associates the incidence of rock-bursts with the stresses built up by a sagging hanging-wall, while the other takes the view that stresses primarily responsible for the sagging hanging-wall are also the cause of rock-bursts. The first group starts its reasoning from the convergence of the walls, probably the most conspicuous feature of deep mining, and works back to the conclusion that rock-bursts are in sorne way due to the breaking up of the sagging layers. The second group begins with the stress zone apparent around excavations at depth and follows mathematical conceptions based on certain assumptions which, in the absolute sense, are known to be inaccurate, but which are justified by the similarity between the conclusions reached and the results obtained in practice. This reasoning is followed to the point where rock-bursts result from the failure, under stress, of rock in situ, quite independent of wall convergence.
