Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) is a promising environmentally acceptable clean-coal technology. A typical UCG system has two wells drilled from the surface into a coal seam with some separation of injection from production. The wells are connected underground by various linking techniques. After creating a combustion reactor in an underground coal seam, air and oxygen flow through the injection well. Heat energy and gases are collected from the production well. As gasification progresses, the combustion reactor is moved along the linking hole. Using this process, the fracturing activity inside the coal seam serves an important role for enlargement of the gasification zone because the surface area oxidization increases continuously by coal cracking. For effective coal gasification, fracturing activity must be controlled. Moreover, excess fractures inside the coal seam and surrounding rock can induce gas leakage, underground water contamination, subsidence, etc. Therefore, monitoring and control of fracturing activity in underground areas constitute key technologies for efficient and safe UCG. To monitor fracturing activity, we conducted laboratory and small-scale field experiments of UCG using acoustic emission (AE) measurements. UCG model tests were conducted for linking and coaxial types UCG models. Coaxial UCG systems are compact and are anticipated for application in underground coal seams having a complex geological structure. The UCG model consists of a coal block molded in a steel canister (20 liter capacity) with heat-resistant mortar, with a linking hole or a coaxial-hole passing through the coal block. During coal combustion, coal temperatures, production gas contents, and AE activity were monitored under the control of injection-air and oxygen flow rates. Results show that the combustion propagated inside the specimen along the linking hole. Many AE events were generated during coal combustion. The AE activity was related closely to temperature changes inside the coal block. This AE generation apparently results from crack initiation and extension around the coal combustion area under the influence of thermal stress. However, comparing the results from UCG models of linking and coaxial types, the gasification of the linking type model showed an average calorific value as high as 11.3 MJ/m3. The coaxial type yielded an average calorific value of produced gas as only 5.79 MJ/m3. In the coaxial type of UCG model, the combustion region was limited to the area around the coaxial hole. The AE activity was lower than in the linking type model. For small-scale UCG field experiments, linking and coaxial types were tested at an open pit coal mine in Hokkaido, Japan. Using a linking type UCG, 58.2 kg coal was processed in 39 h, with the calorific value estimated as 11 MJ/m3. However, the coaxial type UCG processed 7.0 kg coal in 9 h, yielding an estimated calorific value of 6.0 MJ/m3. These tendencies resemble those of results of laboratory UCG experiments. Results of these experiments demonstrate that AE monitoring is a useful tool to evaluate combustion reactors for efficient and safe UCG systems. To develop a coaxial UCG system, results show that fracture control around combustion reactors is indispensable.

Islais Creek Contract E, a transport/storage tunnel in San Francisco, was visited on a fieldtrip during construction by delegates to the 1995 RETC. This paper is a follow-up to that fieldtrip. The project’s two tunnels are 3.7 m and 3.2 m finished diameter, 155 m and 77 m long, respectively. The contractor used 1,000 overlapping jet grout columns to pre-treat the weak Bay Mud along the tunnel alignments, then mined them with an open faced tunnel shield, eliminating the need for compressed air tunneling. This paper documents the jet grouting program and the tunneling operation used on the project.

Most coal mining states have passed or amended laws restricting strip ruining in the past two years. In light of this and in anticipation of further restrictions by the states and the federal government on strip mining this paper attempts to show the Impact of these new laws on the structure of the coal mining industry in Ohio and specifically on one small stripping firm in Ohio. The implications of the study are applicable to other states under similar circumstances and to other industries which are being caught up in the ecological-economic struggle.

A paper describing the Noranda smelter was presented at the 1930 annual meeting of the Institute (1). A lacer article appeared in the Trans-actions of the A.I.M.&M.E. in 1933. Since that time there have been many changes and improvements in plant operation and it is the abject of this paper to give an account of developments up to the beginning of 1939. The Noranda smelter was built originally for a capacity of 30,000 tons a month. At present, the average tonnage being treated is 110,000 tons a month, the tonnage of custom ores alone amounting to almost the total rated capacity of the original plant. This increase has been accomplished by increasing the capacity of the reverberatory furnaces from 700 tons of solid charge per furnace day in 1928 to 1,500 tons per day at the present time. In 1935, it appeared chat the limit of furnace capacity had been reached at about 1,300 tons of charge per day because of the short life of the sprung silica arches. However, the adoption of the suspended magnesite roof, which had been developed at the Flin Flou smelter of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company, overcame this difficulty and it is believed that the limit of the capacity of the present reverberarory furnaces has not been reached. A brief account of the changes to equipment in the various departments will be given, followed by a description of the more important features of present smelter practice.

ThE Coalinga oil field is located on the west side of the San Joaquin Valley, California. The structure is in general a monocline, the edges of the oil horizon resting on the foot hills and dipping gently toward the east. One prominent anticline occurs plunging southeast. The earlier drilling was done in the foot hills comparatively near the outcrop and the wells were shallow. The sands were followed eastward and, in the case of the anticline, along the plunge, the wells becoming deeper and deeper until the depth of 4,000 ft. was reached and passed. There is nothing to show that the oil will not be found in quantity at still greater depth. In fact, some of the best producers have tapped the sand at close to 4,000 ft. The recovery of oil still farther to the east, and therefore at greater depth, seems to be mainly a question of drilling. In this territory the formations drilled through are chiefly sands and shales; they will not "stand up" in an open drilling hole; the casing has to be carried close to the bit, and it is always difficult to keep the casing free for any considerable distance. Ability to carry casing of comparatively large diameter without conductor pipes for distances of 2,000 or 3,000 ft. or over is desirable in such territory chiefly for two reasons. It makes it possible to enter the oil sand with a pipe of ample diameter; it eliminates one or more expensive strings of casing which act only as conductors for the water string, and furthermore, in territory where waters are encountered which corrode steel rapidly, it makes possible the construction of a rust- and alkali-resisting water string. It is always desirable to shut off top waters, which may lie within 100 ft. or less of the oil sand, with 10-in. pipe. Where the depth is so great that a practical weight of 10-in. pipe will not withstand the probable collapsing pressures, 81/4 in. at least is desirable. About the limit of rotary drilling to date in California seems to be the setting of the 10-in. string at 3,200 ft., although the rapid advance in rotary work during the past year seems to indicate that this depth may soon be increased. Four different nickel concentrates were oxidized in a laboratory scale laminar flow furnace in simulated flash smelting conditions. The major nickel- and iron-bearing minerals in the con- centrates were pentlandite, violarite, gersdorffite, and pyrite and pyrrhotite, respectively. Thermal decomposition, ignition and oxidation behavior of nickel and iron sulfides were examined by using optical and scanning electron microscopy. General reactivity of the concentrates was monitored with sulfur removal which was most effective in violarite-based concentrate. Pentlandite-concentrates needed higher experimental temperatures for complete desulfurization and gersdorffite-based concentrate contained 5 - 10 % of the original sulfur even in the most oxidizing conditions studied (1 100°C, 50 vol-% 02). The reactivity of the iron minerals was found to depend on the other minerals present in the concentrate. In this paper, the observed re- action products and mineralogical changes are presented and preliminary conclusions of possible reaction mechanisms of nickel-bearing minerals are discussed.

The disposal of large quantities of electronic scraps generated world wide is causing not only environmental problem but also loss of resources. Therefore, R & D efforts have been made to develop a suitable process for extraction and separation of metals viz. copper, zinc, cadmium and nickel expected from the leaching of e-scraps using solvent extraction process. Different process parameters viz. pH, aqueous to organic ratio, kinetics of extraction, extraction isotherm to establish stage requirement for extraction in continuous mode etc have been studied to optimise the condition for the separation of metals. The studies showed the selective extraction of copper after iron precipitation from the sulfuric acid leach solution of e- wastes containing ~1.0 g/L Cu and minor impurities with 2-hydroxy-5- nonylacetophenoneoxime (LIX 84) above pH 2.0 in single stage. A scheme for separation of cadmium, zinc and nickel has been proposed using di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) under controlled pH of the aqueous solution. The order of extraction was found to be Zn> Cd> Ni.

Combustion aerosols consist mainly of elemental and organic carbon (EC and OC). Since EC strongly absorbs light and thus affects atmospheric visibility and radiation balance, there is great interest in its measurement. To this end, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) published a standard method to determine the mass of EC and OC on filter samples. Another common method of measuring carbon in aerosols is the aethalometer, which uses light extinction to measure "black carbon" or BC, which is considered to approximate EC. A third method sometimes used for estimating carbon in submicron combustion aerosols, is to measure particle size distributions using a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS) and calculate mass using the assumptions that the particles are spherical, carbonaceous and of known density. With an eye toward evaluating the use of these methods for measuring carbon in freshly emitted diesel aerosols, the objective of this paper is to compare the results among these methods and to investigate the role of OC when measuring the mass concentration of elemental carbon (or black carbon) in aerosols emitted by a medium-duty Diesel engine. Results indicate that the aethalometer response correlates well with the data from filter samples (R2 = 0.99), with a very slight positive interference at high levels of OC.

Workers at Anaconda Aluminum Company's primary aluminum smelter at Sebree, Ky., were back on the job December 1, after agreeing to a new 3-year contract. The old contract had expired November 15. On December 20, the Aluminum Company of America reportedly shut down a 42,000-ton-per-year potline at its Wenatchee, Wash., primary aluminum smelter and half of a 23,000-ton-per-year potline at its Vancouver, Wash., smelter as a result of a power cutback by the Bonneville Power Administration. A1 so in December, Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corp. reduced overall power at its Mead and Tacoma, Mash,, smelters and shut down one of eight 27,500-ton-per-year potlines at Mead. Reported shutdowns for the firms since September have amounted to 76,000 tons for Alcoa and 50,000 tons for Kaiser. Alcan Aluminum Ltd. announced plans to double the generating capacity at its Kemano hydroelectric power plant in British Columbia to 1,916 megawatts. The additional power would be equal to that required of a primary aluminum smelter with an annual capacity of 567,000 tons.

The highest recorded loss of life due to the collapse of mine workings occurred at the Coalbrook North Colliery in South Africa on 21st January, 1960. A total of 437 persons died when bord and pillar workings collapsed over an area exceeding one square mile The whole mass of strata from the 470 ft (143 m) deep seam to the surface being affected. Although the Coalbrook disaster was unique in its scale the problem of pillar failure, particularly in old workings, is by no means uncommon nor confined to recent history. Indeed, the collapse of large pillared areas was a regular feature of mining in the north of England in the early part of the nineteenth century. When a section of underground workings collapses, the air under the descending roof is compressed very rapidly. The pressurised air is dissipated subsequently at a rate governed by the leakage paths available. If the collapsing area is small, such as the case of a local fall of roof, then there will be little danger of an air blast. If, however, an extensive area collapses suddenly then the rapid compression of air will give rise to a pressure shock wave that will be transmitted through the remaining workings as an air blast. If worked out areas are connected to current workings via unstopped airways an air blast caused by pillar failure in the old workings will be extremely hazardous to personne1 and may cause extensive damage to equipment, perhaps even reaching to surface plant. At Coalbrook, the air blast blew out a wall in the surface fan house. Areas that are considered liable to sudden collapse may be isolated from current workings by the construction of stoppings. However, such stoppings must be capable of withstanding the 'hammerblow' effect of peak air pressures developed during the collapse. The work described in this paper was undertaken in order to determine the maximum air pressures that stoppings must withstand during a major pillar failure. The result has been a method of establishing peak air pressures that is quick and simple to use. Readers who are concerned primarily with the practical application of the method are advised to turn directly to the last main section of the paper.

On March 20, 2014, the ?Roundtable Discussion on Innovations in Heap Leaching and Mine Waste Management? was hosted by Knight Piésold and Co. at the Red Lion Hotel in Elko, NV. This topic is timely, and formed something of a lead into the inaugural ?Workshop on Innovations in Waste Rock, Tails and Heap Leach Management.? That workshop, which grew from the 2013 Elko Roundtable, was held on the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) campus on May 19, 2014. The workshop was hosted by UNR and the University of British Columbia. Knight Piésold?s local representatives, Bryan Ulrich and Logan Jensen, were joined by Tom Kerr, president of Knight Piésold?s, U.S. practice; Rick Frechette, senior vice president, environmental services and Jeff Coffin, geotechnical engineer, from the Denver, CO office for the roundtable event. The event played host to about two dozen attendees from several western states.

The process of electrostatic separation was developed in the late 19th century, but did not make much headway for about 25 years. High dc voltages, of the order of 20 kilovolts, are involved, and the only means of obtaining such voltages at that time were by the use of frictional machines, such as the Wimshurst. These were not reliable, for two reasons:-a. If a spark discharge occurred it took an appreciable time before a steady voltage was again attained.b. In damp weather the machines were almost useless.In the first 20 years of the 20th century the advent of mechanical and vacuum-tube rectifiers led to promising developments of 'the process. In the early 1920's flotation became widely used commercially, and proved to be more reliable, and capable of wider application, than electrostatic separation. During the last 15 years or so, with a better knowledge of the fundamentals forming the basis of the process, electrostatic separation is beginning to compete with flotation, especially in the treatment of smallsizedgranular material, such as beach sands. Electrostatic separation can be, and is, widely used in many cases where flotation is impossible, such as in the cleaning of food products which must be kept dry.

Located near Ely, Nevada, the Robinson Mining District has produced gold since 1868 from the Ruth? porphyry copper system. Gold occurs in at least seven different deposit types, including porphyry copper ore, silica-pyrite replacements along favorable horizons, fault controlled silica bodies, intrusive breccias, stockworks in bornfels and in retrograde skarns. In all of these the primary controls localizing gold ore are structural .preparation and permeable hosts. Indicator elements associated with gold are Ag, As, Te, and to a lesser extent Sb and Tl. Pb, Zn and F are peripheral to gold or with it depending upon position within the system. The district has produced 87,000 kg (2.8 million ounces) of gold thus far. An additional 19,300 kg (620,000 ounces) of reserves are established, and well over 31,100 kg (1,000,000 ounces) of reserves are anticipated. I

In the winter of 1902, while occupying the position of mining and examining engineer for the Mountain Copper Co., Ltd., of Keswick, Cal., I had .occasion to discuss with the General Manager, among other things, the question of the enormous waste of sulphur in smelting cupriferous pyrite ore, and to cast about for means to utilize this waste or to render the fumes innocuous to vegetation. The decreasing rate of production of California farms, the consequent need of fertilizers, and the opportunity thus offered to utilize large quantities of sulphuric acid in the manufacture of superphosphates naturally brought the subject to the practical and commercial side of phosphates. I was informed that the company had made efforts to find phosphates in the West, without success. I advised as a start placing inquiries for phosphate deposits on the Pacific coast in the current mining journals. This was done, with the result that in January, 1903, from an advertisement in the Mining and Scientific Press we got track of a deposit in Rich county, Utah, through T. J. Wilson, of the Southern Pacific railroad in San Francisco. As soon as snow in the mountains would permit, in May, 1903, I undertook an examination of the property, with the result of recognizing the importance of the find, in spite of its lack of facilities for transportation at a commercial figure. On June 15, 1903, I concluded my report by saying, "This may be one of the world's deposits of phosphates." On Nov. 17, 1903, I concluded my report for the season in the following words : " I have now no hesitation in saying that I believe the Carboniferous formation so largely developed in the Wasatch mountains of Utah and the mountains of the Great Basin will prove to be one of the greatest storehouses of phosphoric acid in the world." "THE NOVA SCOTIA TECHNICAL COLLEGE has been granting degrees in mining engineering since 1909. The college was established in 1907 to provide the final two years of the undergraduate program in engineering the earlier years of which are given at several small universities scattered around the Atlantic Provinces. Since the beginning of the program, 251 Bachelor of Engineering degrees have been awarded in mining engineering. Although the average class size has been small, increases in enrolment in the past few years have resulted in Nova Scotia Technical College being the second largest mining department in Canada, based on the number of graduates per year. This year 18 students received B.Eng. degrees, and next year 17 will graduate.In 1968, it was necessary to make a decision on whether or not to abandon, for economic reasons, the program in mining engineering. For several years enrolment had been very low and resignations among the mining engineering staff created a situation in which the program could easily have been dropped. However, it was decided to continue mining engineering, as it was the only such program in the Atlantic Provinces. New staff members with many years of practical experience in the mineral industry, not only in Canada but in the U.S.A., South America, Africa and the U.K., joined our department. RÉSUMÉ Cet article traite d’une analyse technique et économique du concept du triage optique en vue d’améliorer la rentabilité des opérations minières. Le principe du tri optique et les principaux systèmes et modules servant au fonctionnement de l’appareil de triage sont décrits. un modèle a été développé pour analyser l’intérêt économique d’une opération de triage optique. L’étude est basée sur des données provenant d’une halde de minerai à faible teneur en or, déposé à la surface, et de minerai extrait des opérations souterraines courantes de la mine Beaufor au Québec. Les résultats de cette analyse indiquent que l’opération de triage optique permet d’améliorer grandement la performance économique; l’opération devient alors rentable pour des teneurs en or relativement petites.

Government established and financed the NZ Steel Investigating Co in 1960. Its investigations showed that a steel industry was feasible and desirable based uponNorth Island titanomagnetite ironsands, and charted a route for its establishment. The initial processing used post-1945 preheating and prereduction developments, but later innovative improvements created what was essentially a new New Zealand technology. Of the North Island titanomagnetite deposits: the small ones at Waipipi were best made available for export; those at Kawhia and Taharoa were too remote for the economic siting of a mill; that at Raglan proved too small; while at Waikato North Head three times the requirement of 50 million tons of concentrate were located in two sand areas averaging 18 per cent titanomagnetite. Economic studies showed that a South Auckland site would be ideal, close to New Zealand's biggest market. The mill site, on a basalt flow at Glenbrook, was located by a half-day's fieldwork - near both the Waikato North Head deposit, and a railhead for bringing in Waikato coal, etc, and taking out steel products.   This development was one of several since World War II which altered significantly the lives and homes of New Zealanders (others were natural gas, oil, geothermal power, epithermal gold, aluminium, opencastable lignite, etc). All had the essential ingredients of the highest government backing, direct or indirect government finance, and first-class New Zealand scientific and engineering skills (eg to create new technologies). Not one such project failed.

The water resource is key to survival of the mankind and this resource is now becoming critical in many parts of globe including India. As per an assessment of Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) of India, a huge shortfall of about 58 billion m3 of water is anticipated by the year 2050. In order to counter this shortfall, there is thrust from Government of India to adopt water conservation measures. National Environment Policy, 2006 of Government of India also stresses upon the need to take up water conservation measures for water security of the country. The coal mines in India provide an excellent opportunity to take up water conservations measures therein. The mine water is not acidic unlike western countries and it conforms to the prescribed regulatory standards. This nature?s gift is utilized in Coal India Limited by allowing mine voids to get filled with mine water. The net recharge potential of the opencast mining area is found to be about 5% in comparison to 2% in non-mining area offering good prospects for ground water recharge. The seasonal rainwater is also diverted into mine voids left at the end of mining operations which act as huge reservoirs/ pit lakes for storage of the water. They also serve as surface water bodies for recharging of water table in the surrounding areas. The area and space left from where coal has been extracted completely in underground mines and will not be entered by any man or machinery after the extraction, called goaf, are also potential source of water conservation. These additional water resources created are being utilized for meeting the industrial, domestic, irrigation and other requirements of the projects and local communities eliminating the need to tap other fresh water resources including ground water. Presently, 75% of the water demand of the coal mining project is being met from the water stored in the mine pits. In future, CIL is likely to create about 3.3 billion m3 of water resource, on an average, in its opencast mines alone. In the mine closure plan of opencast mines, the last cut is proposed to be developed into water body for recharge of ground water and creating additional water resources. A clean potential source of potable water is thus developed after mine closure. This will ensure water security of the country.
