Introduction Within the last quarter of a century the Lake St. John-Saguenay valley has been converted from a quiet agricultural district to one of the important industrial centres in the Dominion. First there was the expansion -of the pulp and paper industry, and then, starting a little over ten years, ago, the development, in large .blocks, of the enormous hydro-electric power resources of the Saguenay river. Coincident with this power development, the world aluminum industry was rapidly expanding and looking for a new source of cheap power. This was found in the Saguenay valley-and so, in 1925, Arvida was established by the Aluminum Company of Canada as a location for one of the largest aluminum plants in the world. Arvida, an incorporated city comprising an area of some ten square miles, is ideally located on a more or less level plateau about 350 feet above the Saguenay river. Seldom has industry stepped boldly forth and carved out of Nature a community with full city status. The process usually goes through the steps of camp, village, town, and city, involving improper planning or lack of planning; all of which has been avoided at Arvida by starting out in the right way. While this community has only a population of approximately 2,000 at the present time, it is carefully planned for a population many times this figure. Streets, city parks, business and residential sections, have been definitely planned, and, with a City government, proper ordinances were passed at the beginning to ensure the building and maintenance of a model industrial community. As the crow flies, Arvida is about 35 miles due east of lake St. John, and 0 miles west of the St. Lawrence river at Tadoussac. From a shipping standpoint, it is well served by the Canadian National railways, with direct lines to Quebec and Montreal, and by ocean shipping facilities at Port Alfred, which is about 15 miles to the east on the Saguenay river and is served by the Roberval & Saguenay railway. The latter has interchange connections with the Canadian National at Arivda, and also operates a branch line into the city of Chicoutimi.

It has been suggested that radicals on the surface of dust particles are key chemical factors in the pathophysiology which results from the occupational inhalation of coal and silica dust. In addition, oxygenated derivatives of arachidonic acid (eicosanoids) have been implicated as important biochemical mediators of mineral dust-induced lung disease through their role in bronchial and vascular smooth muscle reactivity, inflammation, and fibrosis. Therefore, we assessed eicosanoid production by the rat alveolar macrophage (AM) exposed in vitro to mineral dusts with varying surface chemical characteristics in order to determine if radicals associated with the mineral dub1 could influence the production of pro-inflammatory mediators in the lung environment. Rat AM were exposed to freshly fractured or "stale" bituminous coal dust, as well as untreated silica or silica calcined to 500°C and 1100°C. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and thromboxane B2 (TxB2) levels in incubation medium were determined by specific radioimmunoassay. When AM were exposed to freshly fractured coal dust, PGE2 and TxB2 production were markedly increased. In contrast, exposure of AM to "stale" dust significantly reduced PGE2 and TxB2 production. In vitro exposure of AM to untreated silica resulted in a significant increase in PGE2 and TxB2 production compared to control. However, exposure of AM to silica calcined to 1100°C resulted in eicosanoid levels which were not significantly different from control. These findings suggest that radicals associated with respirable coal and silica particles may play a key role in the ability of mineral dust to activate AM eicosanoid production.

"The capital intensive nature of the present process for aluminium smelting, the low productivity per unit reactor, and pressure to reduce the electdcal energy demand have motivated the search for an alternative process. Optional routes include carbo-thennal reduction of alumina (using an alloy phase immediate), chlorination followed by electrolysis of aluminium chloride, and electrolytic decomposition of alumina using inert electrodes. Materials performance and reactor design constraints have been a major limitation for alternatives. However parallel research has led to considerable advances in the process efficiencies and scale of both the Bayer process and the Hall-Heroult cells.Future development of alternatives is dependent on breakthroughs in Materials Science such as the development of stable conducting anodes and stable wettable cathode materials. However if successful it is probable that some spin-offs will be retrofitted to existing cells. Therefore the basic Hall-Heroult technology will continue as the dominant process for at least the next half century.IntroductionThe present Bayer/Hall-Heroult process for production of aluminium is just over 100 years old. Frequently, during the century of its technological development questions have been raised as to whether it is the ideal route for metal production. The questioning was particularly intense in the period between the mid-1950s and the mid-1060s when the limitations of the Hall-Heroult electrolytic stage were evident. Then the cells were only 30 to 35 % efficient with respect to the utilisation of the hydro-electricity (requiring 16 18 kWh/kg, thus making it strongly dependent on cheap electrical energy), while the size of cells being installed were 80 to 130 kA. Hence the process was capital intensive, the productivity per reactor volume low, and the process was labour intensive (requiring about 15 man hours per tonne of aluminium). In addition, the use of pitches for Soderberg anodes and the fluoride electrolyte were creating problems through emission. At that time material science had paid little attention to the manufacture and use of carbonaceous materials or the development of alternatives that were corrosion resistant to cryolite or liquid aluminium. Hence cell lives were short - typically 600 to 1000 days - thus adding to operating costs. Thus the grass over the fence, as foreseen in 1960s vintage crystal balls appeared much greener for alternative processes."

Our teams help owners collect and process drone data into deliverables to be analyzed, annotated, stored, and shared. The use of drones can transform the way projects are managed and can improve project workflows. Data collected with drones can be processed into a digital twin of any project site or asset. This digital twin provides owners with a three-dimensional geometrically and geospatially accurate model. These models can be annotated and tagged with information that can be stored and shared locally or on cloud-based platforms. The data can be exported and used in a wide variety of CAD and GIS platforms. Goals When considering the use of UAS for several items need to be considered when establishing project goals. Safety Drones can be used to reduce job site safety risks in two ways. The first is that use of the drone can remove personnel from harm’s way. Surveyors and other project staff will traditionally walk the site to collect survey and other site information. These efforts can be replaced with the use of a drone eliminating much of the need for personnel to be on the job site itself which improves safety. The other way safety can be improved is that a digital model of a job site can be created on a daily or weekly basis that can be quickly analyzed for safety hazards. This analysis could be done remotely by safety officers to identify job site hazards which can then be corrected before injuries happen. Improved Deliverables Perhaps the most important reason to incorporate drones into project workflows it the ability to improve the project deliverables. Drones have the ability to quickly collect large amounts of high quality data which can be processed into orthomosaics, point clouds and 3D models that give engineers and project managers the information they need to make better decisions on design or project management.

"During recent months much criticism as to the efficiency of mine labor has been heard from various, sections of the country. No doubt much of this criticism has been well founded. The present lack of efficiency and of stability is due primarily to a spirit of restlessness and partial irresponsibility engendered during the transition from war conditions to peace time conditions. This spirit or unrest not only among the laboring classes but in every branch of the human family following a period of intense nervous tension in a nation appears to be a natural sequence of war and beyond the control of man. This condition will gradually disappear, and the majority of our people will again assume their natural order of living, but labor will for a considerable period be sensitive to these influences, whether they be exerted for good or for evil. Employers of labor should take cognizance of this fact and bend every effort towards the development of measures that promote efficiency and permanence of the working force.Labor efficiency depends upon many and varied factors. Some of these factors as applied to mine labor are briefly enumerated in the following paragraph:Selection and Placement of Manpower:In the selection of men the two main considerations are physical ability and adaptability. The laws of mechanics should be applied in the selection of men as in the selection of machinery. If a machine is required for a certain class of work, the type of machine known to be mechanically fit for such work is selected. Likewise, men should be selected with regard to their physical and temperamental fitness for the kind of work expected of them."

A study was made in the Bureau of Mines experimental coal mine of factors affecting gas ignition by a cutoff explosive charge. Experiments showed that, although gas could be ignited under some circumstances, the probability under normal mining conditions would be low. The use of permissible explosives, relatively short-delay intervals in firing adjacent holes, blasting to a 6-inch kerf, and reasonable care in the placement of the holes favor safe blasting and are current practice in mining. The experiments also showed that the weight of the charge is not a primary factor in the ignition of gas by a cutoff charge. The quenching action of a first charge on the igniting action of a second was verified in a supplementary study. Related experiments have shown that gas at the face may be ignited by a single charge of explosive when fired with a light coal burden. Permissible explosives were less hazardous under these conditions than nonpermissible explosives. The frequency of gas ignition in cutoff and single-charge experiments increased as the linear distance between the sheared face and the opposing mine rib increased.

Pine Point Mines is located in the Northwest Territories of Canada, about 500 miles north of Edmonton, Alberta (figure 1). Lead-zinc ore is found in numerous localized deposits along a generally east-west trending reef of Devonian dolomite, about 5 miles south of Great Slave Lake. A pumping-test program was carried out in 1968 to guide the design of dewatering systems for several open pits that are partially or wholly below the natural ground-water levels. The hydrogeologic conditions, methods employed and results obtained are discussed.

"The Niagara Tunnel Project (NTP) is a 10.1 km long water-diversion tunnel in Niagara Falls, Ontario, which was excavated by a 14.4 m diameter tunnel boring machine. The excavated rock types included limestone, sandstone, siltstone, shale and mudstone. Based on observations and measurements the overbreak was divided into four zones. Approximately half the tunnel length was excavated through the Queenston Formation, which locally is a shale to mudstone. Three of the four overbreak zones were within the Queenston. Zone 1 includes the formations above the Queenston Formation, Zones 2 and 4 are border regimes with little or no influence from St. Davids Buried Gorge and Zone 3 is the area influenced by the gorge. Zones 2 through 4 can be generally summarized as having overbreak as the result of stress induced spalling. Zone 2 marks the transition from slabbing at the Whirlpool contact in the stress shadow to spalling towards Zone 3. The behaviour of Zone 3 is interrupted from the typical high stress behaviour due to the presence of St. Davids Buried Gorge. As the tunnel passed from the gorge the high regional stresses induce spalling, which creates the typical notch shaped overbreak geometry of Zone 4.Three modelling approaches were used to back analyze the brittle failure process at the NTP: damage initiation and spalling limit, laminated anisotropy modelling, and ubiquitous joint approaches. Analyses were conducted for three tunnel chainages: 3+000, 3+250, and 3+500 m because the overbreak depth increased from 2 to 4 m. All approaches produced similar overbreak geometries to those measured. The laminated anisotropy modelling approach was able to produce overbreak depths and chord closures closest to those measured, using a joint normal to shear stiffness ratio between 1 and 2. The back analysis results were able to produce sets of stress and strength inputs for different sections of the tunnel at the transition from overbreak Zone 3 to 4. The back analysis procedure demonstrates the importance of including the anisotropic stiffness in the numerical modelling approach to correctly capture the overbreak geometry and deformations around underground excavations."

Roof failures in underground coal mines are related to the lithology and geologic structure of the roof. There are two distinct suites of roof rock above the Herrin (No. 6) Coal in Illinois, and each has distinctive patterns of structure and roof failure. In black shale-limestone roof areas, roof instability is correlated with thinning of limestone beds and presence of faults and clay dikes. In gray shale roof regions, the prime roof hazards are posed by rolls, shear bodies, and presence of coal or carbonaceous partings in the roof. Most structural features examined are believed to have formed during early stages of sediment diagenesis and compaction. Structural trends and lithologic patterns are strongly interdependent for this reason. In many cases geologic patterns are so complex and locally variable that prediction of roof stability far in advance of mining is difficult. The need for greater flexibility in roof control planning is apparent.

Any effectuation of a viable program of air pollution control will' require a basic understanding of the chemistry of atmospheric processes, the fate and migration of SO2, and the ultimate health effects of the sulfur oxides themselves. The migration and ultimate fate of Sop discharged into the atmosphere will be discussed with particular emphasis on the various conflicting views and how these relate to our present emission control regulations. Our present lack of knowledge is a severe detriment, and consideration will be given to those particular areas where future research may best be directed to provide the answers to a number of perplexing questions.

With the increased use of mechanized equipment in mining bituminous coal, production panels are mined out rapidly. To keep current with the rapid completion of production panels, development work must be speeded up also. Although the same type of equipment usually is employed in development as in production places in the same mine, past output per man for development usually was less than from production panels. A study of development practices in 14 mines reveals a tendency toward equalization of the output per man between development and production.

One of the criteria to define the market value of chromite concentrate is its chromium to iron ratio. Changing this ratio for a definite chromite mineral is impossible by physical processing. This study investigated the possibility of increasing this ratio through the carbochlorination and the oxychlorination of chromite concentrates. Experiments are carried out up to 1000 °C. The characteristics of samples and reaction products are determined by SEM, XRD and chemical analysis. The carbochlorination of a chromite concentrate at about 600 °C leads to the . selective partial elimination of iron allowing a higher Cr/Fe ratio of the treated concentrate. Selective extraction of iron could also be achieved at about 950 °C by oxychlorination. In this case, a part of chromium contained in the concentrate is recovered as chromium oxychloride. The obtained residue had high content of Cr, Mg and A1 oxides. Such material has probably better chemical and thermal properties that may. be useful for foundary and refractory applications. Two flow-sheets for the beneficiation of the chromite concentrates using carho- and oxychlorination are suggested.

A low-cost methodology that allows the determination of in situ stresses using oriented core specimens has been investigated. The technique can be used to determine the stresses during the early stages of a project, even in undeveloped areas of a mine. The research aim was to compare the experimental results estimated by the Acoustic Emission and Deformation Rate Analysis methods with those estimated by conventional Hollow Inclusion cell measurements. The studies have been focused on full stress tensor determination from a single oriented rock core. In all cases the rock core specimens recollected the in situ stresses reasonably well compared with the standard overcoring method.

This study concerns itself with two topics of the mine ventilation - mine fire interface which, when the work for this study began, did not seem to receive sufficient attention. Section 1: Comments on Spontaneous Combustion of Coal in Mines It is attempted to describe heat generation, heat and oxygen transport, in such a way that existing experimental data for U.S. coals can be used to assess conditions inducive to spontaneous heatings quantitatively. Investigated are, in particular, critical air velocities, minimum sizes of coal accumulations, moisture contents and the influence of mining factors. An extensive, practice oriented literature survey is included. Section 2: The Early Detection of Mine Fires by Assessment. of Mine Gases The suitability of the major constituents of combustion products for an early detection of fires is discussed. The same is done for gas concentration ratios. Since it was felt (at least at the time when this report section was written) that the value of the carbon monoxide/oxygen deficiency ratio was overestimated, the usefulness of monitoring this ratio as compared to monitoring CO concentrations was critically investigated. The state of art concerning instrumentation and organization of fire detection systems is reviewed also.

Block cave mining method poses unique ventilation challenges compared to other underground metal mining methods. This research study focuses on assessing the airflow behavior in regulated airflow distribution systems by developing a 1:100 scaled block cave experimental model and a numerical model. This study also investigated gas flow behavior under various airflow conditions. Based on our findings, we observed that reduction in particle size and porosity of caved materials, decrease in cave footprint, and closure of undercut drifts would increase cave airflow resistance. The increased airflow is found beneficial for gas dilution regardless of its source locations, while the regulated airflow distribution system might deteriorate gas dilution situation when the source is located in the extraction drifts.

The wide use of bulk ANFO in surface coal mines is questionable in our energy conscious environment. At many locations, bulk ANFO is not the proper economic selection. Water conditions, energy requirements, waste and spillage, and vibration control are factors too often overlooked in the proper choice of blasting agents. Cost savings over 20% have been realized by converting bulk ANFO to packaged blasting agents. Future trends suggest greater concern for energy conservation in blasting will limit bulk ANFO applications and promote packaged products where quality can be maximized, waste and spillage eliminated, and water compatibility in wet areas assured.

KURDJUMOV and Maksimova reported experiments with manganese steels and high carbon steels' and with an Fe-Ni-Mn alloy' in which mar-tensite was formed isothermally over a range of temperatures. They found in some cases that mar-tensite formation could be suppressed by rapid quenching to liquid nitrogen temperature. From their microstructural observations of martensite formed isothermally, they concluded that the rate controlling step is nucleation rather than growth. Kulin and Cohen,3 in an attempt to reproduce these experiments, found that with a steel having the same composition as that reported by Kurd-jumov and Maksimova, the transformation to martensite was essentially complete above the temperature range of Kurdjumov and Maksimova's isotherms. The possible reasons for this disagreement were not considered. Recent papers by Das Gupta and Lement4 and Kulin and Speich5 report the formation of isothermal martensite in a high chromium steel and in an Fe-Cr-Ni alloy, but neither paper can be considered a verification of the original Kurdjumov and Maksimova results. Further, in neither case were the authors able to suppress the formation of martensite entirely. Because of the important bearing the Kurdjumov and Maksimova results have to an understanding of the mechanism of martensite reactions it was felt that an experimental investigation directly concerned with checking the validity of their results was in order. This paper describes the results obtained on the isothermal transformation over the temperature range from —79" to —196°C of an alloy of iron, nickel, and manganese. Experimental Apparatus A 15 lb heat of an alloy containing 73.3 pct Fe, 23.0 pct Ni, and 3.7 pct Mn was melted by induction and cast under argon. The ingot was forged to 1-in. bar and a portion rolled to 1/16x1 1/2-in. strip. This strip was pack-homogenized 300 hr at 1100" in a helium-filled sealed iron tube. The composition after homogenization was 73.2 pct Fe, 22.94 pct Ni, 3.73 pct Mn, 0.05 pct C, and 0.015 pct N. The strips were cut to 1/2-in. width for dilatometer and metal-lographic specimens. Only the center portion of the 11/2-in. strip was used in the present investigation. The dilatometer employed was similar in design to one described by Flinn, Cook, and Fellows." A concentric fused auartz rod and tube assembly with hooks for holding the specimen was mounted so as to transmit the specimen dilation to a 1/10,000 in., 1/10 in. travel dial gage. The dilatometer proper was mounted by means of extension arms to a counterweighted sliding member on a vertical standard. This method of mounting permitted rapid transfer of the dilatometer from the austenitizing furnace to the quenching bath and low temperature chamber. A small electrical vibrator on the dilatometer kept frictional effects of the quartz members at a minimum. The austenitizing unit was a vertical, molybdenum-wound, hydrogen atmosphere furnace maintained at a constant temperature ±3°C by means of constant power input. A 12-in. stainless steel jacketed copper liner having 1/2-in wall thickness acted to equalize the temperature in the hot zone of the furnace. This liner, closed at the bottom end and open at the top to permit entrance of the dilatometer and specimen, was kept filled with dry nitrogen gas. A chromel-alumel thermocouple was placed inside the tube to determine the temperature. The 4-in. dilatometer specimens in the chamber varied less than 1/2° across the specimen length except for a 1 1/20 drop at the end nearest the open end of the furnace. The low temperature isothermal holding bath was a double Dewar arrangement similar to one described by Turnbull7. The outer bath was filled with a refrigerant at a temperature lower than the desired holding temperature. The inner bath was filled with Freon "11" or "12" or a mixture of both, depending upon the holding temperature. This inner bath which tended to be cooled by the outer bath was kept at a constant temperature by introducing a small amount of heat with a manually controlled electric heater. Stirring was accomplished by bubbling dry air through the bath. A Leeds and North-rup type K potentiometer was used to measure the inner bath temperature as indicated by a five element copper-constantan thermopile. The bath temperature was maintained within ±0.2°C of the desired temperature by occasionally adjusting the heater current so as to keep the Leeds and Northrup galvanometer at zero deflection with a constant setting of the potentiometer. Isothermal tests were usually continued for 300 to 400 min and another reading made at approximately 1000 min if the bath, unattended overnight, had not deviated in temperature more than 5°C. Transformation curves are drawn dashed (Fig. 1) through the time region where temperature was not controlled precisely. Experimental Procedure Dilatometer specimens of 1/2x1/16-in. strip were cut to 41/2-in. length and holes were drilled for the quartz hooks with proper spacing to give a 4-in. measured length. The strength of anchorage of various types of roof bolts in permafrost depends on the types of rock in which they are installed. Variation in the mine thermal regime results in weakening of the roof and walls, and at times total loss of ice cement bonds takes place in the surrounding rockmass. In mines with positive ventilation air temperature, the wedge or expansion types of bolts may become weakened due to the transfer of heat into the anchorage through the metal rod and subsequent thawing of rocks. Effective operation and evaluation of roof bolt systems for mine workings in permafrost require predictions of the dynamics of wall thawing by warm ventilation air. This paper presents an analysis of the temperature distribution in the frozen host ground surrounding roof bolts, the area of interest being the vicinity of the anchors for point anchored bolt and the entire length for split set bolt

ORE CONCENTRATION PROCESS-PATENT OIL FLOTATION PROCESS. The invention of the patent issued to Sullman, Picard & Ballot November 6, 1906 (United States Letters Patent No. 835120), is based upon the discovery of an wholly unexplained phenomenon arising from the agitation of ore pulp containing oil and air in certain proportions. This was a discovery in an art in which it was well known that the elements of oil, air, and agitation possessed certain characteristics and produced certain results. As early as 1860 a British patent first suggested the use of oil in water concentration of ores by pointing out the affinity which oils have for metallic sub- stances in preference to gangue. Subsequently many patentees employed the known affinity of oil for metal in ore concentration proc- esses by using oil in proportions varying from 2 per cent to 300 per cent of the ore and recovering the oil-coated metal particles by causing them to rise to the top or sink to the bottom of the pulp. In these processes the agitation was either gentle or thorough but never great, and though always employed to produce thorough oiling of the metal it was used in different degrees for the sole pur- pose of causing the metal particles to rise or sink. In the prior art the oil was used for its known selective affinity for metal, agitation was em- ployed to mix the oil with the metal, and air was introduced to supple- ment the buoyancy of oil in raising oil-coated metal particles to the surface. To this extent had the art of oil flotation advanced when the patentee entered it, having reached the commercial stage in only two processes, representing respectively metal-flotation and metal-sinking processes, and having reached the stage of success in none. In the line of experiments by the patentee when the proportion of oil to ore was reduced to 1.5 per cent a "float" appeared; at 1.04 per cent still more "float" appeared; at 0.32 per cent the "float" again vastly in- creased; at 0.1 per cent the "float" again vastly increased. It thus developed that in using oil at 0.1 per cent or even at 0.05 per cent of the ore and after violently agitating the pulp from 24 to 10 minutes, there arose to the surface when the pulp was brought to rest, a thick froth or foam of oil-coated air bubbles carrying oil-coated metal particles to the extent of about 90 per cent of the metal con- tent, the foam being sufficiently stable to permit removal and metal recoveries. This was a new result based upon phenomenon then unknown and still unexplained and constituted discovery and promised a change in the art of oil flotation from laboratory experi- ments and mill failures to commercial success. The patent referred to covering the points mentioned has been sustained by the District and the Circuit Courts of Appeals and by the Supreme Court. Miami Copper Co. v. Mineral Separation, 244 Federal, 752, pp. 754-757. ORE CONCENTRATION PROCESS-OIL FLOTATION-INFRINGEMENT. The Miami Copper Co. in its process of concentrating ores by the oil flotation process used three distinct processes that were either the processes included and covered by the Sullman, Picard & Ballot patent or their fair equivalent and which were clearly an infringe- ment of the patent, and the company can not escape liability for such infringement by taking an additional step, although such additional step if taken alone would not constitute an infringement of the Sullman, Picard & Ballot patent. Miami Copper Co. v. Mineral Separation, 244 Federal, 752, p. 768. ORE CONCENTRATION PROCESS-VALIDITY OF GREENWAY PATENT. The patent issued to H. Greenway, June 9, 1914 (Letters Patent No. 1999699), is valid. The process disclosed in this patent was a substantial departure from processes of the prior art. The heating of water is a matter of large moment and the use of acids is a matter of constant and considerable expense. By wholly dispensing with both by the use of a minute quantity of hydroxy compounds, the patentee has disclosed an original and novel plan which has broad- ened and made more simple the agitation process of air flotation. The novelty and inventive character of Greenway's discovery is patentable.

The element Calcium element has a unique place in the production of etals, intermetallics and other compounds. The unusualness arises from the fact that we have several possible reductants – metallic calcium, calcium carbide, calcium cyanamide and calcium hydride. A review of how metallic calcium is manufactured and utilized is presented. The difficulties involved in producing the metal in large quantities and price implications are noted. . Fundamental thermodynamics of how these act as reductants are shown, along with the historic application of these in metal production during the past century and a half. Alternate applications as to how to control the cost of the reductant is indicated, such as the numerous attempts in making low cost titanium utilizing direct or indirect calcium reductant.
