Mineral exploration activity in the US suffered through another depressed year in 1984. And continued strength in precious metals (and possibly industrial minerals) exploration failed to make up for declines in other minerals. 1984 offered little solace for the explorationist. But some new data on mineral exploration provided better statistics for analysts of US mineral exploration trends. The Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) published data from its survey of 1980,1981, and 1982 exploration by US and Canadian companies - 96 companies responded (Barber and Muessig, 1984). In addition, a Mining Engineering (April 1984 p. 345) article by Emerson and Ivosevic presented their data on annual exploration expenditures in the US for gold and for all minerals from 1961 through 1983. A review of 1984 domestic exploration and development activities reported in several industry journals indicates that almost 90% of those projects were directed at gold and silver deposits. Statistics on 1984 exploration expenditures are not available. But some industry observers believe that precious metals accounted for an even larger share of industry's exploration budget in 1984 than in 1983. Recent emphasis on environmental effects and costs of conventional mining processing, plus success in accelerating bacterial action, suggest that biotechnology be explored for gold ore processing. In our paper, the past experience with organisms in processing gold is reviewed. The use of microorganisms for liberation of gold from sulfide ores as a substitute for fine grinding is discussed. The possibility of accumulation of gold from solutions, such as cyanide solutions, is explored as a potential replacement for such processes, such as carbon-in-pulp or ion exchange. The improvement in engineering technology and kinetics needed to scale-up from laboratory experiments to production scale are outlined.

"In June 2014, Orange County Flood Control District (OCFCD) completed construction improvements of the East Garden Grove-Wintersburg Channel for a price of $42 million. Instead of the pre-existing traditional trapezoidal levee, the channel was improved with a vertical compact levee. Dubbed Soil-Mix-Sandwich (SMS), this geo-structural and environmental solution for coastal channel improvements, underlain by liquefiable soil strata, was both a design and construction innovation. It employed Deep Soil Cement Mixing (DSCM) within the confines of a hydraulically-pressed (Giken Method) sheet pile duo. SMS was unique because it incorporated both subterranean and supra-dredge-line soil mixing within a very narrow workspace. Its DSCM pattern aimed at optimum densification of the workspace and was confirmed during the construction process. It availed the DSCM sub-contractor (Hayward Baker Inc.) the opportunity to demonstrate the fitness of their huge wet-mixing machinery within a very confined access-area and introduced approximately 70,000 cubic yards of DSCM within a limited 15 foot workspace width that stretched for a mile. The sheet pile duo created a construction-enclosure that became a stay-in-place load resisting system. PROJECT CHRONOLOGY AND LOCATIONAn Orange County Flood Control District (OCFCD) project-report was commissioned to study the East Garden Grove Wintersburg channel (OCFCD facility # C05). The report examined the hydraulic conveyance of the C05 channel and was concluded in 1994 by Williamson & Schmidt. The project-report did not encompass extensive geologic studies; but it provided several alternatives for channel improvement. It recommended a single row of sheet piles as the preferred alternative for the downstream reach.The most downstream reach of the C05 channel is located in an environmentally sensitive area, in City of Huntington Beach, California, USA. Its site includes seismic chasms that surface within the C05-footprint (the Newport- Inglewood tectonic fault). Extensive deposits of liquefiable soil exist beneath the channel. Furthermore, tidal-influence prevails against the channel levee. Implementation of a successful design for channel improvement emerged after several traditional concepts were deemed unacceptable by geotechnical consultants. OC Public Works (on behalf of OCFCD) was in need of a design and construction technique that mitigated many associated risks. From these circumstances, Soil-Mix-Sandwich was born and was referred to in the rest of this discussion as SMS. OC Public Works required the SMS design concept to undergo verification by independent geotechnical consultants. SMS chronology from conception to construction can be summarized as follows:"

Mill liner design is an important factor in grinding. Testing and selection of the optimum liner profile for a given set of mill operating conditions can improve mill capacity, liner life, and liner wear rate At a time when mill avilability is at a premium, production costs are going up, and lead time for mill liner castings is a year or more, the mill liner that grinds best, lasts longest, and costs least is a necessity for economic mill operation. In testing four mill liner profiles for 13' x 12' overflow ball mills, Climax found that an improved design increased mill tonnage by 3 tons per hour while reducing finish grind by 1.7% + 100 mesh, reduced liner wear rate, and almost doubled liner life.

Microwave pretreatment can improve grindability by weakening brittle particulate material prior to size reduction. The differential thermal expansion experienced by multiphase materials during rapid heating can also promote damage in the grain-boundary region, which may ultimately translate into enhanced liberation. The effect of microwave pretreatment on the breakage characteristics of different ores has been studied using the Ultrafast Load Cell. The energy accumulated during impact (fracture energy) and the particle stiffness have been measured for untreated and microwaved ore samples. It has been observed that microwave pretreatment can weaken brittle multiphase particulate material, as observed by reductions in fracture energy and increase in damage.

The M2 Upgrade Project involved widening 15 km of the existing M2 Motorway, which is a key route in Sydney’s road network. The Norfolk Twin Tunnels in North Epping convey traffic over a 460 m length of the motorway. The project involved widening the twin tunnels to provide a third lane and breakdown lane in each direction.The widening of the tunnels was fundamentally different to other ‘greenfield’ tunnel projects in that the operation of the tunnel was maintained throughout construction, with motorway traffic permitted close to the excavation faces on a daily basis. The widened works had to integrate with the existing tunnel support, construction details, and mechanical and electrical infrastructure.The existing tunnel afforded the opportunity to review existing ground conditions in the tunnel. Exposures were mapped within the tunnel, and key design parameters were back-analysed from the original monitoring data to provide increased confidence in the assessed impact from the widening works.Traffic capacity of the tunnels was maintained by detailed staging of the works, and included the ability to reopen the tunnels at short notice.A permit to tunnel system was developed to manage the risks associated with re-opening the tunnel to traffic. A comprehensive suite of instrumentation was maintained to provide reliable monitoring data to support this process. Emphasis on the robustness and reliability of tunnel instrumentation provided increased confidence in the adequacy of the tunnel support being installed. The monitoring was routinely compared with design predictions to check the adequacy of the support measures being installed and confirm the design.The approaches and methodologies developed for the widening of the Norfolk Tunnels were effective in maintaining the safe operation of the tunnels throughout the two years of construction, and provide a framework for increasing the capacity of existing tunnel infrastructure in the future.CITATION:Clarke, S J, de Ambrosis, A L, Bertuzzi, R and Redelinghuys, J, 2014. "Jute fibers have in the past decades being investigated as possible reinforcement of polymer composites. However, information is still needed on the fiber interaction with a polymeric matrix for a complete evaluation of the capacity of load transference inside the composite. The present work investigated the interaction of jute fibers with polyester matrix by means of the critical length assessment through pullout tests. Tensile tests of polyester sockets embedded with different fiber lengths allowed the critical length to be determined and then the interface shear stress to be calculated. A relatively low interfacial strength was found, which indicates a weak adhesion between the ramie fiber and the polyester matrix. The SEM analysis of pulled out fibers corroborates this result.Introduction Natural fiber, mainly those lignocellulosic extracted from plants, have, in the past few decades, attracted the attention not only of scientists but also of industrial technologists of our society interested in their engineering applications. As it is well known, uses of natural fiber in clothes carpets, baskets, ropes and low cost construction roofing has existed from the beginning of our civilization. Today environmental and energy saving issues are motivating research works on new uses of lignocellulosic fibers in polymer composites [1-6]. Moreover, industrial application of lignocellulosic fiber composites are already in technological sectors such the automobile industry, packing and civil construction [7-9].In addition to environmental, economical and social benefits, some lignocellulosic fibers present specific properties that are comparable to those of other synthetic fiber used for polymer composite reinforcement. For instance, the specific strength (GPa.cm3/g) of curaua (1.31), sisal (0.92) and ramie (0.93) fibers, from results obtained with very thin diameters [10] are relatively closer to that of glass fiber E (1.33). Therefore, in principle, it would be technically justified to replace glass fiber, which is more expensive, toxic and represents a problem to the environment [ll], by a strong lignocellulosic fiber. However, serious drawbacks such non-uniform dimensions and heterogeneous properties [6] as well as the tendency to form aggregates during processing and incompatibility with a hydrophobic polymer matrix, reduce the potential of lignocellulosic fiber to be used as composite reinforcement [1-6]. In particular, a low interfacial strength causes a weak adhesion between the hydrophilic fiber and the polymer matrix."

"A cooperative research work on the silver recycling process is underway between Matsuda Sangyo Co., Ltd. and Tokai University in Japan. Silver wastes treated here are mainly from photograph industries where the concentration of minor element is steadily increasing in the recent years. The waste materials are concentrated and the impurities are removed by evaporation and slagging. In this paper, the industrial practice of wastes treatment is introduced and the result of the laboratory studies on the removal of antimony and tin from the binary and ternary alloys will be discussed. Characteristics in the behavior of antimony and tin during the process are also discussed with the observation of practical operation.1. IntroductionPrecious metals such as gold and silver primarily come from mining practice and the byproduct in copper smelting. However, the recycled amount of these precious metals have been increased 1 along with the environmental restriction and the widely accepted idea of saving resources on the earth in the recent years.· Though the recycle process of precious metals are comparatively simple from other metals refining, the process has been getting more complicated as wastes treatment has to deal with more impurity elements which are intentionally added to the products. Among these additives, antimony is used in the film materials in the photography industries to suppress its inflammability. Tin is another concern ,that is also coming from photography wastes; These minor elements have become problematic during the recycle.The removal of these minor elements has been in operation at Matsuda through a traditional oxidation refinement process using a reverberatory furnace. However, the complexity of the charge makes the recycle process more tedious and troublesome. In order to investigate the minor element behavior in the complicated materials system during the silver recycling processes, a cooperative research work is undertaken between Matsuda Sangyo Co., Ltd. and Takai University in Japan. Silver wastes treated here are mainly discharged from photograph industries where the minor element contents such as antimony, tin and bismuth in those wastes are steadily increasing in the recent years. The liquid wastes containing silver are concentrated and then treated pyrometallurgically with solid wastes from other sources, where the impurities are removed ·by evaporation and slagging. "Mining companies are under constant pressure to reduce their cost structures to sustain profitability. In mines using an open stoping mining method, dilution often has a significant effect on profitability. At Target mine in South Africa, dilution in some open stopes was found to exceed 10%, falls of ground being a major contributor to the problem. This dilution can reduce the recovered grade from 5.5 to 4.5 g/t, resulting in a potential loss of about R21 million per month based on a gold price of R240 000 per kilogram. In addition to the cost of dilution, the cost of damage to, or loss of, trackless equipment as a direct result of falls of ground in open stopes is significant. Other associated costs include transport, hoisting, secondary blasting, milling, and plant treatment of waste material. Stable open stopes are essential in order to reduce falls of ground. Back-analyses of stope instability at Target mine have indicated that conventional rock mass failure criteria are unsuitable for stope design. An alternative strain-based criterion has been developed, and has proved to be very successful, allowing the stability of open stopes to be calculated reliably. Since its implementation in 2010, dilution and equipment damage have decreased markedly, creating value for the mine. IntroductionMines that make use of an open stoping mining method aim to extract only the ore, leaving the waste behind. Many orebodies have well-defined boundaries between the ore and the waste rock. In such orebodies, the introduction of waste into the ore due to overbreak dilutes the grade. In massive disseminated orebodies, dilution is less problematic. Overblasting, falls of ground, or other causes may result in dilution. A study undertaken in Canada (Pakalnis et al., 1995) found that approximately 51% of all underground metal mines utilized open stoping mining methods and, from surveys conducted at these mines, open stoping operations experienced dilutions of up to 20%, and occasionally more. Dilution of this magnitude has a significant economic impact on any mining venture. Research carried out in Australia by Capes (2009) came to the same conclusion."

"The iron ore of the Scully Mine is upgraded from 36 per cent Fe to 66 per cent Fe through single-stage crushing, wet autogenous milling, sizing by vibrating screens and two-stage spiral separation, followed by a process in which the concentrate is dried and then further improved by high-tension separators. The capacity of the concentrator is 17,000 long tons of concentrate per day. Discussion of the operation will recognize the special problems encountered in handling preponderantly fine ore, relate issues of interest regarding wear and review mechanical innovations found to be advantageous at Wabush. The modern trend toward big equipment, thoroughly instrumented, has been the theme of design. Effects on availability must be a consideration in this choice, and sectionalizing of circuits to minimize these consequences is as important as streamlined maintenance."

Mining operations consume a considerable amount of energy, and while reduced energy consumption is desirable, it is not always clear how to achieve this goal. Understanding the opportunities to optimize energy consumption is crucial, and the key to understanding is visualization. One option is the Sankey diagram, which has been used for over 100 years to visualize the flow of energy, materials, or cost through various processes. However, there are drawbacks to this approach that must be addressed. In a Sankey diagram, each flow is represented by an arrow possessing a width proportional to the magnitude of the flow it represents. The diagrams show input flows, how energy is converted and into what form, and also output flows. As per the first law of thermodynamics, the total energy output is equivalent to the total energy input, so any energy that is not transferred to another process is considered to be wasted. These waste flows are depicted in Sankey diagrams and make it straightforward to associate energy sources, sinks and waste flows. Unfortunately, Sankey diagrams do not convey all information required to support practical decision making for redirecting individual energy flows. Based only on a Sankey diagram, it may become evident that a significant flow of waste heat is of the appropriate grade (temperature) and volume to meet an on-site heat demand currently being met with paid-for, possibly carbon intensive fuel. However without augmenting the Sankey diagram with 3D spatial, true geometric analysis, the practicalities of the concept or idea may not be fully appreciated. Another issue with a Sankey diagram is that the magnitude of the energy flowing between processes may have temporal fluctuation or variability on different timescales (diurnal, seasonal, interannual). Currently, Sankey diagrams only provide a static picture of energy conversion and consumption, so that, for example, 4 separate diagrams could have to be prepared for each season. A new energy flow visualization technique which we have called Sankey Trees has been developed. Process locations are defined within a 3D model of the site being studied, and the magnitude of the flow between each pair of processes considered is replaced with a time series. Branches of sustained and diminishing flows are represented through variation of the geometric properties of the branches of the trees. These branches are animated to indicate the direction of flow, and branch joints are used to indicate that a process is transporting one form of energy to multiple processes.

Many inquiries are received by the United States Bureau of Mines for the names of elementary books on geology, mineralogy, methods of identifying minerals, prospecting, and similar subjects. In response to this demand the following brief bibliography has been prepared. As many of the inquiries are received from those who have limited technical knowledge of the subjects involved, the bibliography includes the simpler texts which present the subjects in nontechnical language. Other texts contain glossaries which define the technical terms used. A short note following the title indicates the character of each book, the number of pages, and the price. Thus, elementary mineralogists or geologists, prospectors, mineral collectors, nature students, or travellers may select the texts that best suit their requirements and their capabilities. To supply the needs of more advanced students, quite a number of the standard texts used in schools and colleges are included in a second group. A short list of books on economic geology and mineralogy has also been added.

"IN THE writer's opinion, the most important industrial re-search problems in Canada concern development of technology for the treatment and commercial utilization of the recent discoveries of v.ast quantities of easily concentrated iron ores in both eastern and western Canada. They exist in both magnetite and hematite forms. The subject is doubly important because of the lack of metallurgical coking coal in Canada. Methods for utilizing our lower grade eastern and western coals for reduction purposes must be developed. We are fortunate in our supplies of oil and gas, which can supply the heat requirements for processing or for thermal electric plants, which are now competitive with hydro-electric plants in the industrial areas. These are among the reasons which have prompted the writer to continue the development of the co-current rotary kiln direct-reduction process outlined •in his report to this Institute at the 1956 Annual Meeting ( 1) in the face of the scepticism which has surrounded the numerous costly failures in 'sponge' or 'direct' iron production. The work involved in bringing the concentrating ores of Canada to the metallic state involves, firstly, concentration of the ores; secondly, preparing the concentrates for reduction; thirdly, reduction of the 'reconstructed' ore; and finally the steel making process. These briefly will be dealt with in order, giving emphasis to the most important of these steps, the reduction process which is the main subject of this paper."

Denison Mines Limited, Canada's largest uranium producer located in Northern Ontario recently embarked upon an extensive development program that would allow them to substantially increase production and also meet the more stringent air quality standards established by the ministry of Natural Resources. To proceed with this program it was essential that the fresh air supply be greatly increased to the underground workings. A major portion of the mining area is located under Quirke Lake on the north limb of a syncline termed the Quirke Lake trough. The Denison engineers determined the most practical size and location for a proposed new fresh air shaft, eventually deciding to drive a 25 foot diameter shaft, 490 square feet in section for 1,800 feet long vertically. The shaft collar would be located on Roman Island, an island in Quirke Lake. A test hole was drilled from Roman Island to determine the ground through which the ventilation shaft would pass. This drill hole confirmed the location of the Quirke Lake over-thrust fault, a highly fractured water bearing zone 165 feet thick, approximately 800 feet below surface. Plans were made by Denison Mines Limited to seal and consolidate this ground when it was encountered by the shaft.

There have been many improvements and advancements in the application of neural networks in the mining industry. In this study, two advanced deep learning neural networks called recurrent neural network (RNN) and autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) were implemented in the simulation and prediction of limestone price variation. The RNN uses long shortterm memory layers (LSTM), dropout regularization, activation functions, mean square error (MSE), and the Adam optimizer to simulate the predictions. The LSTM stores previous data over time and uses it in simulating future prices based on defined parameters and algorithms. The ARIMA model is a statistical method that captures different time series based on the level, trend, and seasonality of the data. The auto ARIMA function searches for the best parameters that fit the model. Different layers and parameters are added to the model to simulate the price prediction. The performance of both network models is remarkable in terms of trend variability and factors affecting limestone price. The ARIMA model has an accuracy of 95.7% while RNN has an accuracy of 91.8%. This shows that the ARIMA model outperforms the RNN model. In addition, the time required to train the ARIMA is than that of the RNN. Predicting limestone prices may help both investors and industries in making economical and technical decisions, for example, when to invest, buy, sell, increase, and decrease production.

The electrical resistivity the coefficient of electrical resistivity the Hall coefficient, and the absolute thermoelectric power were determined in this Bureau of Mines investigation for nine compositions of the TiB2-CrB2 sub-system. The numerical values of the electrical resistivity and the thermo-electric power were greater for the intermediate compositions than for the end members. The absolute values of the Hall coefficients and the coefficients of electrical resistivity were less for the intermediate compositions than for the end members. The electrical resistivities and Hall coefficients were about the order of magnitude of most metals--from 34 to 202 microhm-cm and from about 0 to -23.3 X 10-4 cuP/coulomb. The thermoelectric power was somewhat greater than that of most metals--up to 15.6 microvolts per 0 C.

Renewed interest in olivine refractories has led to efforts to characterize them employing modern techniques of experimentation and data analysis. Initial studies have focused on determination of physical and thermophysical properties. Special equipment for the determination of thermal shock resistance and creep behavior have been constructed. Optimal compositions for maximizing various properties are being identified using appropriate statistical techniques. The overall goal is to develop response surfaces for each of a selected group of engineering design and use properties. Development of ?olivine Refractories? in the United States The term "olivine refractories" is used here because it does appear that domestic deposits of this rock will be the focus of renewed interest and "olivinell is the preferred term in this country. There are extensive deposits of high quality olivines extending through parts of Georgia. North Carolina and in the state of Washington. The eastern olivines are much more localized and extensively altered compared to the western materials. The Washington olivines exist as massive rock deposits in the Twin Sisters mountain area northeast of Seattle and their inaccessi-bility has slowed efforts to develop them. The North Carolina olivines have been used in steel plant applications since the 1930's. Geologists use the term "olivine" to describe assemblages of ortho-silicates. 2RO.SiO2, wherein the RO may be MgO. FeO. MnO. etc. When the RO consists essentlally of MgO and FeO. the material is called dunite and. as such, is synonymous with "refractory olivine." Refractory olivines utilizing North Carolina materials were developed for brick products by Birch and Harvey in this country around the mid-1930's. (I) Their work was completely independent of that of V. M. Goldschmidt and co-workers who used massive dunites located in Denmark. (2) These deposits are currently being mined by A/S Olivine of Denmark for the manufacture of a rather complete line of brick shapes for use in steel-plant. glassplant. and cement kiln applications. Full-seam mining with continuous mining machines in dirty coal beds may increase loss of coal in the washery refuse. At one mine mentioned in this report the loss of salable coal was increased sixfold. Cleaning trials were made on three samples of jig refuse in a dense-medium pilot plant to demonstrate the application of this process to the recovery of coal from waste. These tests demonstrated that coal could be separated from impurity with the same degree of sharpness obtained in treating raw coal by dense medium. However, the recovery efficiency achieved in treating refuse averaged distinctly lower than that possible with raw coal because of the greater proportion of intermediate-density material in the feed and the lower yield of clean coal.

The microstructures and kinetics of a rich iron ore ( TFe = 65.84%) of Na Rua mine, Vietnam, used for the iron production were investigated in this study. Thermal behaviors of iron ores were well-examined by heating microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential thermal analysis. After being pelletized and then oxidatively fired at 500–1200 °C for 2 h, the pellets fired at 1200 °C (P1200) displayed a hard and dense structure with a decent compressive strength of 317.9 kg/pellet whereas those fired at 500 °C (P500) had a soft and spongy structure. The reduction of iron pellets conducted in a flow of a 60–100% CO2/ Ar gas mixture at 900–1100 °C showed significantly higher efficiency than the reduction using coal. The spongy pellets showed superior performance for the reduction in the CO/Ar gas mixture compared to the dense ones, compatible with the production of sponge iron. When mixed with an amount of coal, P1200 designed for iron production in the blast furnace demonstrated an impressive reduction activity compared to P500 and previous studies. The kinetics of pellet reduction was determined by the diffusion of substances through the solid product layers having the mathematical model of 1 − 2 3 f − (1 − f )2∕3 = kt . The microstructures of pellets during the oxidative firing and reduction were also examined by X-ray diffractometry; scanning electronic microscopy; energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy; and Brunauer, Emmet, and Teller method.
