When using perlite as an insulation, it is important to determine the requirements for different applications as this influences the processing of the perlite. In cryogenic applications, perlite properties of low density and fine particle size are desirable, while Loose fill insulation applications require similar properties and water repellency. However, in perlite insulating concrete applications, a coarser particle, of higher density, is required to provide improved compression strength. The essential properties of perlite including, particle size, density and surface treatment are discussed in relation to the various insulation applications. "During the past several years, alunite from the Marysvale (Utah) region has been the subject of investigation by the Electrometallurgical Section of the Bureau of Mines. The nature and occurrence of this mineral, with considerable data on the Utah deposits, together with a number of results of preliminary experiments, have been given in a previous report. 6/ The geology of the Marysvale region has been reviewed recently. 7/The present paper reports the results obtained by a method involving the sintering of alunite with boric acid and subsequent treatment of the sinter to produce alumina and potassium sulphate.The preliminary work just mentioned had given indications of the separation of sulphate salts high in potassium from fusions of alunite with borax glass.During the course of further work along those lines, fusions of boric acid and alunite were tried. No separation of salts was obtained, but it was observed that rather complete removal of so3 from the alunite occurred and that the sinter could be leached with water to give a solution contain¬ing most of the potash and a residue containing most of the alumina. The Bureau of Mines studied the extraction of lithium from lithium-containing clays by chlorination with hydrogen chloride (HC1). In bench-scale laboratory investigations, HC1-H20 mixtures were used to selectively chlorinate lithium, but not calcium or magnesium, in lithium-containing clays. The addition of calcium carbonate to the clay was found to improve the lithium recovery. Reaction conditions found to affect the lithium recovery were ratio of clay to carbonate, reaction temperature, and HC1 concentration. The best conditions for selective chlorination of the lithium were 2:1 clay-carbonate, 750° C, and 20 wt-pct HC1. The experimental results and trends in lithium extraction are explained using thermodynamic relationships.

"Nippon Mining & Metals started a new copper anode slime treatment plant that processes slimes in a chloride media. The basic plan of the process was proposed by Mr. James E. Hoffmann and Nippon Mining & Metals modified and advanced to produce precious metals in acceptable qualities for the company. The process has a wet chlorination stage of decopperized slimes, a solvent extraction and a reduction stages of gold, a silver chloride reduction stage and separative reduction stage of its gold extraction raffinate. The new plant of this process started in 1997 and has been operated in good condition.IntroductionThe old anode slime treatment plant of Nippon Mining & Metals, located in it's Hitachi Refinery, processed anode slimes through a combination of pyrometarllurgical processing and electrorefining. There was a need to plan a future of the plant because the maintenance cost increased year by year and a new selenium registration was going to be applied to the plant. Some plans were discussed and the result was that the process proposed by Mr. Hoffmann was superior among them.Nippon Mining & Metals started 'to examine the process and the experimental result showed that the process had an ability to be its new process but further research should be necessary to produce precious metals in acceptable qualities. The final process flow has some modified and additional stages to be suitable for its requirement. Silver processing stage is quite changed. Gold extraction stage has a new step to polish gold loading DBC. Gold extraction raffinate treatment stage is advanced to be able to recover precious metals, selenium and tellurium, separately. Aeration under atmospheric pressure is employed in decopperizing stage.The basic design of the new plant started in 1995 and finished in 1997. The construction of the new plant began in April 1997 and finished in October. The plant has been operating well after the four months test operation."

Due to the harsh operating conditions, wearing of the inner refractory lining in a Basic Oxygen Steelmaking (BOS) furnace reduces the useful life of the refractories and incurs a significant cost component for relining. In this study, firstly, a combined compressible and incompressible computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed to identify the potential wear prone zones in an industrial scale BOS system during the supersonic oxygen blowing phase by quantifying the wall shear stress distributions. Next, the retained slag splashing process was simulated by introducing an inert gas to residual slag mass to achieve a protective coating on the refractory walls. Effect of both design and operational parameters such as lance head configuration, lance position and the initial slag volume on the slag wall coating performance were quantified and most favourable conditions were determined.

The smelter off-gas cleaning and the weak acid treatment at Outokumpu Harjavalta Metals Oy are presented and described in this paper. The smelter consists of the copper and nickel smelters and the acid plant of three separate acid plants two of which are double contact and one single plant and of one liquid sulphur dioxide plant. The preliminary cooling and flue dust separation of the smelter off-gases from the copper and nickel flash smelting furnaces and converters in the waste heat boilers and in the hot electrostatic precipitators are described. The final cooling and cleaning of the gases in the scrubbers at the sulphuric acid plant and the treatment of the weak acid in the vacuum and in the submerged combustion evaporators for the removal of impurities are pre¬sented as well as the treatment of the condensates from the evaporators. The attention is paid to the generation of sulphur trioxide in the smelter off-gas and to the treatment of that in the weak acid bleed-off and to the utilization of the treated acid.

Recovered activated carbon fines result from processing of ore and concentrates via cyanide leaching and sorption of valuable metals on carbon at gold-mining plants. This intermediate product is characterised by the particles sized smaller than 0.6 mm and gold grade up to 300-500 g/t. Processing of carbon fines with recovery of valuable metals is not available at many plants due to the lack of optimal technology. The paper describes the testwork and development of an efficient technology to process carbon fines with the recovery of valuable metals into the target gold alloy. This innovative technology involves pelletising of fine activated carbon particles using an organic binder, drying and further firing of pellets in a grate fired furnace at 800-900 °С. The produced ash is subject to sintering with sodium nitrate and hydroxide at 600-700°С. The sintered ash is then leached in water. The insoluble residue containing gold and silver is removed by filtration, dried and smelted to produce gold alloy. Water solution containing sulphur and arsenic is subject to detoxification. Processing of recovered carbon fines according to the developed technology implies the use of standard full-scale equipment. The offered method to treat gold-bearing carbon fines was patented by the Eurasian Patent Office. Large amounts of manganese-rich slag were generated from smelting low-grade manganese ore containing high iron and high phosphorus in electric furnace or blast furnace, which contain 25–40 mass% Mn. This paper describes an efficient hydrometallurgical process for the utilization of high manganese slag instead of conventional usage of pyrometallurgical route for manganese recovery. Pressure acid leaching of manganese-rich slag using air as pressurized gas is studied systematically. The effects of mass ratio of manganese-rich slag to pyrite, concentration of sulfuric acid, leaching temperature, partial air pressure, leaching time, and liquid-solid (L/S) ratio on the separation of manganese with other main impurity components were investigated comprehensively. Under the following optimal process conditions, weight of manganese-rich slag powder,100 g; mass ratio of manganese-rich slag to pyrite, 20:1; sulfuric acid concentration of 140 g/L; air pressure of 0.6 MPa; leaching temperature of 140 °C; leaching time of 1 h; L/S of 7:1; ore size of 75–80 μm; and stirring rate of 600 rpm, the extraction rate of Mn reached 94%, and the dissolution percentage of Si, Al, and Fe are as low as 2%, 6%, and 10%, respectively. The leaching slurry presented a good solid-liquid separation characteristic. The silicic acid formed during sulfuric acid leaching manganese silicates was converted to filterable dehydrated SiO2 particles which precipitated in the residue under the condition of higher temperature with higher pressure. The effect of adding pyrite may be to reduced iron ions and decreased the output of iron hydroxide colloid and also reduced MnO2 to manganese sulfate in sulfuric acid leaching. Thus the formation possibility of colloid such as silica gel and iron hydroxide was decreased, and higher yield of manganese sulfate could be achieved.

The use of Alyavdin's equation Y(x,t) = 1-e(-bt) for describing the effect of grinding time on size distribution is discussed. The equation transforms into linear form by expressing it as log-log reciprocal (1 - Y) versus log t. For plotting, specially divided grids are available; Rosin-Rammler or Weibull charts may be used. The data of Herbst and Fuerstenau are especially useful for illustrating the Alyavdin-Weibull chart in two applications: (1) presenting data (which are relatively unaffected by experimental scatter) and comparing them with theoretical predictions, and (2) as a test for the zero-order kinetics production hypothesis. The chart based on the Alyavdin-Weibull equation is suggested as a useful aid in the analysis of kinetic data (/ versus f), though not as a procedure in its own right. Proposed applications are (1) displaying data with excellent clarity, since it avoids the kind of congestion inherent in some other plotting methods, and (2) as a test for assumed kinetic relationships. Sometimes, equation 1 describes the data quite closely, and in these cases the parameter values appear to be related to certain operating conditions.

Exploration and mining title administration in the Northern Territory has changed dramatically over the last 20 years. These changes have occurred due to legislative amendments, technological developments, and the changing face of the mining industry. The first legislation to control mining in the Northern Territory was the Northern Territory Gold Mining Act (1873) of South Australia. In 1911, control of the Northern Territory was passed from South Australia to the Commonwealth. As a result of the mining boom which followed the discovery of gold in Tennant Creek in 1932, the Commonwealth passed the Mining Ordinance of 1939. This legislation was amended 39 times and stayed in force until July 1982, when the self-governing Northern Territory passed the Mining Act 1980. This Act is still in force and is continuously under review. The first computerised mining titles system, REGIS, was created in 1984/85 and was, to all intents and purposes, just a computerised index. Various modifications ensued, and in 1989 the Titles Database was unveiled. The database has developed to be one of the most sophisticated yet user-friendly mining titles databases in Australia. In excess of 50 companies have access to the database from their own offices. Work continues on its development and fine-tuning. The paper outlines the development of the database since inception.

Granites are classed as igneous rooks; they have been formed by the solidification of rook magmas or Solutions from deep within the earth. It is an almost invariable law of nature that mamas which cool quickly form fine-brained or glassy rocks, while those that cool slowly are completely crystallized and are coarser-grained. Granites, being of the latter class, are regarded as having attained their solid form at considerable depth below the surface under conditions of high temperature and pressure. The constituent minerals crystallized out slowly, the crystals interlocking with one another. The great depth of overlying rocks that must have been present when crystallization took place has been removed by erosion over large areas on the surface of the earth in consequence of which granites appear at or near the surface in many localities.

The paper presents the initial investigation of possible energetic applications of chosen wastes from groups: 06, 03, 05 and 01, including coal slimes being secondary product of hard coal processing. These categories of wastes are catalogued according to the polish law, where 06 ? wastes from production, preparation, purchasing and application of products of non-organic chemistry; 03 ? wastes from wood processing and from plates and furniture, celluloid mass, paper and card board production; 13 ? oil wastes and wastes from liquid fuels; 01 ? wastes produced by searching, extracting, physical and chemical processing of ores and other mineral raw materials. The change of combustion heat value was evaluated in produced energetic mixtures containing these types of wastes together with the change of their individual components. All combinations of ingredients were taken into consideration giving 256 various mixtures, from which 36 were selected to investigation. This allowed the performance of statistical factor analysis. For such prepared materials the application of regressive method was proposed in purpose of calculating combustion heat value and then the comparison of empirically determined and theoretically calculated heat values was performed. The change of regressive coefficients can be determined by the nature of Hess law (eq. 1) what was investigated and the attempt of its explication and validation was done.

REQUIREMENTS for war materials have led to large scale experimentation upon metallurgical innovations. It is of interest to inquire what this may contribute of permanent value to our existing technology, as innovations adopted during war are apt to be discarded promptly at its end. This is because utilization of substandard ores usually requires a new technology for ore treatment, and a new use-pattern for employment of the products. Thus two very different problems are involved: first, devising a process; then, adopting its products by industry, with readjustments of the use-pattern if necessary. A new process may be as good or better than an old one, but the readjustments required for use of its products may prevent its general adoption if this implies scrapping existing plants and investing much additional capital. Metallurgical innovations are of three kinds: I. The use of substandard material in processes already established; 2. The grading-up of substandard material to render it more suitable for established processes; 3. The adjustment of technology and use-pattern to the raw materials that we have.

This study of the rate of evaporation of zinc was undertaken as a part, of a general investigation on refining mixtures of metals resulting from melting reclaimed scrap. One of the methods by which the more volatile metals, such as zinc, magnesium, and cadmium, may be separated is by distillation. Distillation may be carried out at lower temperatures if it is done in an evacuated enclosure. The immediate purpose of the present investigation was to determine accurately the effect of temperature, pressure, and other factors on the rate of evaporation of zinc.

The quality and the production rate for the mining operations in the Garpenberg mine has been much improved due to a new system, that presents the latest exploratory and planning data for the driller at the moment he deploys the drill rig at the face. Other components in this improvement work are better planning procedure, large-scale production system with longer rounds and introduction of new drill rigs in the mine. The new Rig Control System (RCS) for the new series Atlas Copco Boomers L2C has made it possible to develop this system for production drilling in the Garpenberg mine. The ABC Regular has been extended with map navigation and drill plan generator. The driller will have the best estimate of the orebody in front of him and the best drill plan for that orebody. The customer’s specific system will also become a standard Atlas Copco product for the Boomer ABC drill rig family.

Flotation is a highly interactive process where a change or disturbance in any part of the circuit results in different final grades and recoveries. This high variability of the circuit metallurgical performance complicates the diagnosis of the scavenger stage at the end of the line, as copper losses in the final tailings are erratic and not totally a consequence of problems in the scavenger section. The assessment of the scavenger performance requires a more elaborated procedure than that used for others stages of the circuit. This communication describes the application of an approach that combines results of laboratory flotation tests with those of surveys performed at the plant. The approach is based on running surveys in one of the circuit lines to collect samples for determining grade vs. recovery curves for total mass and size-by-size fractions. Full mineralogical and liberation analyses are also considered on some samples of the feed and tailings streams selected to have a range of feed grades. A separate sample of the feed is used to run laboratory flotation tests to determine optimum flotation time. Two additional pieces of information are the effect of operating variables on recovery, determined through a test program based on design of experiment techniques, and operational data on every cell in the line gathered by visual observation. The application of this approach to one of the scavenger lines at Los Colorados concentrator (Minera Escondida, BHP Billiton) is demonstrated.

A finite-element algorithm was developed for an axisymmetric heat-transfer problem involving phase change. The finite-element treatment of the phase-change problem was dealt with by using the enthalpy method. The finite-element algorithm was subsequently applied to model the heat exchange between mine ventilation air and frozen ground in the presence of roof bolts in an underground mine with permafrost. This paper analyzes a single bolt in the problem domain with the convection boundaries at the roof level of the mine airway. A short-term study, comprising the evaluation of roof bolting (friction-anchored type), was conducted, and recommendations were made regarding the applicability of roof bolts as a support system for a given thermal condition.
