Many gold deposits in the world have not been developed clue to the presence of copper and other base metals which can cause metallurgical and environmental challenges clue to the formation of base metal cyanide complexes. SART technology (sulphidization-acidification-recycle-thickening) can resolve these issues by recovering copper as a high grade sulphide concentrate, recycling the associated cyanide back to the gold leach, and eliminating the downstream environmental liabilities. Project economics can be improved substantially, leading to a positive re-evaluation of new and existing gold-copper projects. Some aspects of the design and operation of two recently commissioned SART plants will be discussed.

In this paper we describe the leaching characteristics of pure gold in thiosulfate solutions that contain a known chelator; meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA). The interfacial and chemical characterisation of the system was accomplished using both electrochemical methods and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis after pure gold samples were exposed to solutions composed of 65 mM Na2S2O3, 1 mM NaOH and a range of DMSA concentrations. In the absence of DMSA, cyclic voltammetry revealed the onset of thiosulfate mediated gold dissolution, the degree of which was reduced at more positive potentials due to the formation of oxidised thiosulfate products on the gold surface. The addition of small amounts of DMSA (<10 ¦M) to the electrolyte resulted in minor changes to the voltammograms indicating a subtle interaction of the additive with the gold surface that may improve leaching. However, at higher concentrations of DMSA (up to 100 ¦M), electrochemical evidence suggests the formation of new oxidation products in solution as well as the formation of more compact monolayers of DMSA on the surface, which contribute to partial repassivation of the surface. The influence of DMSA on thiosulfate leaching of pure gold electrodes at the open circuit potential for a period of 90 minutes was tested and the corresponding gold leaching performance evaluated with ICP-MS analysis. Our data shows that small amounts of DMSA (1 ¦M) doubled the amount of total gold in solution when compared to the same study in the absence of the additive. However, higher concentrations (5 ¦M DMSA) reduced the overall amount of dissolved gold. These results may point to a mechanism where small amounts of DMSA improve leaching by adsorbing onto the surface in a highly defective monolayer that partially blocks or disrupts the formation of passivation products caused by thiosulfate oxidation, but excess DMSA can limit the leaching process itself by forming too coherent a monolayer on the gold surface.CITATION:Uceda, M, Choi, Y, Shepherd, J L and Guerra, E, 2013. The design and construction of a new 140-ton-per-day R. O. M. phosphate rock scrubbing and washing plant was undertaken by Western Knapp Engineering Company, a Division of Arthur G. McKee and Company, for the J. R. Simplot Company, Minerals and Chemical Division, Pocatello, Idaho. The new plant replaces the owner's existing facilities at Conda, Idaho, seven miles northeast of Soda Springs in the southeast corner of Idaho. Replacement of the existing facilities became necessary because of loss in production and recovery. These losses were due in part to varying grades of raw ore from the mine and to the type of process equipment used in the old plant to upgrade the ore. Increase In production and grade was further necessary by demands created by expansion of facilities in Pocatello, Idaho, where all process ore from this plant is shipped. The new process scheme includes an ore-feeding system, scrubbing, screening, classification, wet cycloning, attritioning, filtering, drying, storage and shipping facilities. Space was also left for future increases of scrubbing and classification capacity and for heavy media separation. It is the purpose of this paper to take up some of the considerations necessary in the design of small mills in order to achieve the desired objectives of a successful plant, such as production, minimum operating cost and maintenance cost.

Extensive deposits of bituminous, subbituminous, and lignite coals occur in the western United States (Figure 1). Over one trillion tons of identified resources have been located and inferred by geologists and more than 200 million tons of western coal are mined annually (1). In the future, production of western coals will increase significantly and approach national production levels of higher-rank eastern coals. Western coals will be utilized in new power plants as a replacement fuel for oil and gas and may be used in advanced technologies such as diesel engines or in direct-fired turbines. Since these applications require low-ash, low-sulfur coals, crushing to fine sizes and significant cleaning to remove minerals and sulfur will be required. Coal cleaning traditionally has been associated with reducing pyrite and other mineral matter from high-rank eastern coals. To date, insignificant quantities of western coals have been cleaned before utilization and limited data on their washability characteristics exist. Because of this lack of data, it is difficult to predict how these coals will react to standard washing techniques.

The Pongkor Gold Mine employs 678 staff. The mine is owned by the Indonesian state company PT Antam Tbk and is located 100 kilometres south west of Jakarta, in Java, Indonesia. Mine and infrastructure development started in 1992 following intensive geological exploration over 15 years. First gold production was in June 1994. The mine comprises three main orebodies: Ciguha, which is nearly mined out, dips at 75¦ from surface to 150 m. Kubang Cicau, dipping at 80¦ from surface to 230 m, and averages 3.5 metres thick at a grade of 10 g/t Au and 128 g/t Ag; and Ciurug, dipping at 60¦ from surface to 300 m and averages eight metres thick at a grade of 14 g/t Au and 172 g/t Ag. Present global ore reserves are 4.6 million tons at a grade of 12.3 g/t Au and 133.6 g/t Ag. Exploration is continuing for new veins. Initial mining was by manual cut and hydraulic fill at Ciguha, followed by Kubang Cicau. In 1996, it was proposed to convert Ciurug to a mechanised cut and fill operation. Two single boom jumbos and three load-haul-dumps (LHDs) were purchased with the assistance of a gold loan from NM Rothschild and Sons. Implementation of this upgrade was delayed by both a national economic crisis and an invasion of the concession by illegal miners. It was not until May 1999 that raise bore vent rises and access drift infrastructure commenced. Major underground development started in 2000 and is continuing. Production cut and waste fill stoping started in July 2001. The change from manual to mechanised methods has required a total change in work practices and attitudes. However, the process has resulted in a production increase from 600 tpd to 1200 tpd. A three-month compliance test (a condition of the financing loan) was successfully completed, from July to September 2001, with an average production of 700 tpd at Ciurug and 500 tpd from Kubang Cicau.

DURING the war the mineral industry, and metal mining in particular, extended itself more than any other to attain the limit of its productive capacity. Likewise, probably no other industry went quite so far toward jeop¬ardizing its own economic future through depletion of material reserves. Once we looked to Europe for most of the manufactured goods we needed. Our own limited mineral requirements were easily supplied from mines near the Eastern seaboard. With expansion and industrialization, our mineral needs increased in proportion, and the centers of mining activity moved westward to Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and the Tri-State district, where seemingly inexhaustible high-grade deposits of iron, copper, lead, and zinc ores were opened and rapidly developed.

Fibrous minerals are common in nature but asbestiform minerals are rare. The unique mineralogical characteristic common to all the asbestos minerals is their morphologic form (or habit of crystallization) as polyfilamentous fiber bundles. The individual fibrils within the bundles have a tendency to be very long with a narrow range of diameters and grow with their long fiber axis in parallel orientation to the bundle length. The asbestiform habit imparts to the asbestos minerals sufficient flexibility and tensile strength so that most can be woven into cloth. In the past application has focused on their ability to insulate against the transfer of heat. The Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mine was acquired by Newmont in August 2015. The high grade flotation mill project was commissioned in February 2014. The mill to date has been throughput limited due to mechanical and design issues. In order to create the most value from a throughput limited plant a campaign to provide timely ore characterization was undertaken. A diagnostic leach methodology was developed to determine gold associations by ore type. The resulting associations were then used to characterize feed blend; gold losses and optimize gold production. The diagnostic methodology is presented along with discussion on flotation implications.

Barrick Goldstrike Mines is improving the reliability of mining and processing equipment through the use of failure analysis and condition monitoring activities. Program results include an increase in equipment capacity and an overall reduction in operating costs. Identifying equipment failure modes and developing associated capital asset management practices can minimize failure consequences. Successful programs have included alterations to management practices, equipment modifications, and/or the implementation of condition monitoring programs. By controlling or minimizing the effects of incipient equipment failures, corrective actions can be taken earlier in the failure cycle. This results in an associated reduction to repair costs and equipment down time. Mining companies invest in their capital assets to provide the capacity necessary to meet operational needs. Over time, functional failures occur that reduce this productive capacity. Diagnostic technologies now exist that allow the condition of equipment to be monitored. Early response to this information minimizes the effects of functional failures and restores equipment re- liability. Reliability is a performance indicator of overall equipment condition. It is most often expressed in terms of mean time between failures. When the established objectives of a capital asset management program include the maximization of this failure interval, trailing indicators, such as availability and operating cost improve. The probability of equipment failure is influenced by engineering design and operating conditions. The performance level resulting from this operating environment is expressed as "inherent reliability." Without maintenance intervention, equipment will ultimately fail to perform its intended function and become less reliable. Therefore, maintenance must be managed as the supplier of reliable operational capacity. Maintenance can only supply equipment performance that approaches the level of inherent reliability. Actually achieving inherent reliability requires that all maintenance decisions are made at the economically optimal time. Enhancing performance levels beyond inherent reliability can only be achieved by altering operating conditions or practices or through physical equipment modifications. An evolution in maintenance management philosophy has been under way since the beginning of the industrial revolution. As equipment has become more sophisticated, so have maintenance practices. At the beginning of the industrial age, equipment tended to be over designed and slow moving. The first maintenance philosophy was one of reactive maintenance. Maintenance intervals were dictated by the operational status of the equipment. As a result, production interruptions were common and capacity needs were met through an investment in redundant capital assets.

Premier Mine is a large underground diamond mine, situated at Cullinan in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. The mine hoists over 3 millions tons of diamond bearing kimberlite per year, from a modern, mechanized panel retreat block cave mining operation. Troughs sited at the base of the cave are developed into the overlying caved ore, allowing loading access to the ore through draw points. Trough opening is therefore a vital aspect of the mining operation. Most of the production is dependent on fast, reliable and safe trough opening. Successful trough openings are achieved under difficult mining conditions due to restricted void, long up-holes and the inherent properties of kimberlite?soft, elastic rock with a high swell factor. Early in 1998, Premier Mine undertook a joint development project (with an electronic initiation system supplier) to determine whether the use of a fully programmable electronic detonator system would enhance the mining cycle in the trough opening process. Blasting commenced in February 1998, initially with blasts of a similar size and duration to those that had been previously blasted with shock-tube systems, to confirm the operational capabilities of the blasting system. The accuracy, reliability and flexibility of the electronic delay detonators (EDDs) minimized associated risks for re-engineering of the trough opening process. Further, as blast timing was optimized, larger blasts were successfully initiated. To date over 20 troughs have been opened successfully with the use of EDDs. Not only did it take less time to open troughs, but also drilling and blasting operations have been optimized, as well as an overall improvement in safety. This paper details the benefits that EDDs have delivered to Premier Mine in this area. The general or macroclimate of the study sites in western North Dakota is characterized by rapid and sometimes extreme daily and day-to-day temperature fluctuations, rainfall patterns which are erratic in spatial and temporal distribution and intensity, generally low relative humidity, plentiful sunshine, nearly continuous air movement, and a relatively short frost-free period. Of particular relevance to plant growth and productivity is the mosaic of microclimates: these microclimates are affected by landform (convex and concave surfaces); exposure; slope angle, length and aspect; soil color, texture and surface cover (litter), and vegetation cover. The most critical plant growth governing factor in this region is available water. It is determined principally by water input (precipitation) and water loss (evapotranspiration) which is increased by high temperatures, wind, and poor litter and vegetation cover. While spring and fall precipitation is generally gentle and soil-soaking summer rains frequently come in the form of intensive, soil-washing, localized convective thunderstorms of short duration. Due to the convective nature of these storms, summer rainfall is particularly affected by regional topography; southwest slopes and crests often receive more rainfall since these storms usually move in a northeasterly direction. The water loss due to runoff and consequent soil erosion arc major problems resulting from such "cloudbursts". Previous fall precipitation (September - October) when added to current seasonal precipitation (March - August) was found to be significantly correlated (r-.93) with plant production. Winter precipitation (snowfall) is relatively light as the prevailing weather is dominated by dry polar air masses from the north. The nearly continuous wind is responsible for removing snow from open exposures and depositing it in depressions and windbreaks. Although the winter precipitation is not a large component of the total annual precipitation, conservation of that which does occur would contribute to plant production during the following growing season. Generally clear skies over the region facilitate receipt of abundant sunshine at the earth's surface. While good for early season soil warming and plant photosynthesis, this abundant sunshine coupled with long days and nearly continuous wind is responsible for evapotranspiration exceeding precipitation by an average of six inches between June' and September. On a local (micro) scale, the water deficit is most severe on the southern exposures which receive the most direct (most effective) solar radiation and therefore are warmer than other exposures. On a broader scale, it was found that ambient temperature extremes were slightly but significantly greater in the town of Beulah in the Knife River Valley than at the upland test sites, This may have been due to the difference in topography and/or the "urban heat island" effect. It is known that air temperatures in large cities may be 2° to 4°C higher than that of the surrounding countryside. It is also well known that basins, depressions or valleys are sinks for cold air masses and are often subject to frosts not occurring on adjacent upland sites.

Metallurgical accounting is key to the control and production planning process of any mining operation. This is even more crucial for complex operations involving mining, concentration, smelting, refining and marketing. The tracking of multiple metal product and contaminant components through the operation can improve process predictability and inventory management. Appropriate use can be made of æhigh quality dataÆ for strategic reserve utilisation, mining operations, milling operations, etc. This information enables the optimisation of all aspects of the mining and processing operations. This case study discusses a metal balance implementation for WMCÆs Olympic Dam operations; a large integrated mining, concentration and refining operation, which used an existing off the shelf statistical data reconciliation package developed for the oil industry. It was extended to track and balance the metal co-products across the entire integrated mining, mineral processing and refining plant. The key benefits discussed are tight integration with existing data collection systems, formalisation of previously informal processes, and leveraging the development and support available for a widely used package. The project provided a solution for the site metallurgical balance spanning the mine and processing plant. The solution facilitates a bridge between the planning and production worlds, using a common data model across the site.

Nearly a decade and a half after the US and China established formal diplomatic relations, and two decades after the two countries signed the Shanghai Communique and established commercial ties, the world, and perhaps China itself, has discovered that a wealth of natural mineral and energy resources lie beneath China's soil and directly off its coast. The country's coal reserves and oil and gas potential are well known. Its ferrous and nonferrous metal reserves are respectable and in a number of instances pre-eminent. According to 1981 Minerals Yearbook estimates - more often than not below those now being claimed by China - the country's aluminous metal reserves are about 907 Mt (1 billion st); iron ore reserves are 40 Gt (44 billion st); and copper reserves are about 46 Mt (54.4 million st) of contained metal. In addition, the country has about 10.7 Gt (11.8 billion st) of phosphate reserves, the fourth largest in the world, and 3 Gt (3.3 billion st) of pyrite. China's national Sixth Five Year Plan promulgated in late 1982 ended a stringent three-year retrenchment or readjustment period in which a number of major development projects involving foreign participation initiated in the late 1970s were shelved. The new Five Year Plan is a signal both within and outside of China that things are now moving again, and that major industrial and service sectors are receiving the kind of funding and flexibility they need for expansion, construction and modernization. The new plan's strategy for growth is measured and much less grandiose and frenetic than it was five years ago when China flung open its doors to foreign companies and invited participation in large-scale development projects. Now, the country's reticence to spend foreign exchange to purchase key equipment, technology, and services -a reaction to these projects and the spending they entailed - is clearly on the wane. In China's effort to quadruple its GNP by the year 2000, there is a new willingness to use some of its substantial foreign reserves. In fact, it is projected that 1983 will witness a $1.9 billion deficit, with a $2-3 billion deficit in 1984 and 1985. The following article discusses implications the Sixth Five-Year Plan has for nonferrous metal development in China. It is the first in a series of three articles on Chinese mineral resource development to be published in Mining Engineering over the next few months. The second article will identify specific nonferrous projects underway, while the third in the series will focus on trade and development opportunities for phosphate and potash producers in China. China's Ambitious Plans In the last few months, the exploitation of China's nonferrous resources and development of its industrial processing capabilities have begun to receive increasing attention on both provincial and central levels. Unlike the earlier modernization drive of 1978 when China's ferrous sector - best typified in the Baoshan iron and steel project - got the lion's share of the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry's (MMI) energy and resources, it now appears that in some respects the nonferrous and industrial sectors are finally moving out from beneath the dominating shadow of ferrous and getting their own day in the sun. Separation of Nonferrous from Ferrous One clear demonstration of this is the establishment in April 1983 of the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Corporation (CNFMIC). The corporation is composed of 819 enterprises with over a million workers, and also includes 12 nonferrous metal construction companies, eight design institutes, and three prospecting companies. Of ministerial rank, CNFMIC is responsible for the development of both the country's nonferrous resources and its processing facilities. Although closely tied to the parent ministry from which it sprang (i.e. MMI), CNFMIC, at least theoretically, is separate and independent from it. One strong indication that this independence is, or soon will become a reality, can be seen from the fact that the new corporation is not headed by the former MMI officials, not even those who made up the ministry's now defunct nonferrous bureau. Instead, its president Qiu Chunfu is formerly of the State Economic Commission and the China International Trust and Investment Corp. Its general manager Fei Ziwen, an engineer in his early 50s, is from the Jiangxi Province Copper Corp. The new nonferrous corporation appears to be powerful

Our modern cities are almost incapable of sustaining themselves without subsurface infrastructure, which is not identifiable at first glance. This very soon becomes evident when the chaotic conditions prevailing in some cases in the multi-million cities on the African, Asian and South American continents are taken into consideration. This does not simply apply to the hopelessly congested streets in the downtown areas. If anything, it is shown here too that a subsurface infrastructure represents an important prerequisite for public health right up to banishing the danger of disease. Even during the 1990s, this has been clearly underlined through examples of cholera and plague epidemics in parts of Central and South America as well as on the Indian subcontinent. The overriding significance of an inner urban subsurface infrastructure in order to create decent conditions in the major built-up areas was once again emphasised not all that long ago at the United Nations HABITAT-II Conference in Istanbul, Turkey, in June 1996. More than 15 000 delegates from all over the world mulled over and discussed the prerequisites for humane living conditions in human settlements taking the varying climatic, topographical and cultural marginal conditions in different regions of the globe into account. Apart from the built-up areas themselves, the utilisation of underground space is experiencing high and ever increasing significance in less densely populated regions. Attractive and fast transport links between industrial centres call for high- performance transport arteries for the economic, speedy and unhampered carriage of people and goods. Important impulses for the economic power of a region or nation are provided by transport development and links. As a consequence, tunnels for roads and railways are being built or planned to a great degree for crossing mountain ranges, rivers and straits.

In the fall of 1988 it became evident that the accuracy of sulfur forecasts for Monterey Coal's No.1 Mine needed to be improved. In addition, it became necessary to predict if any individual train shipments during a month would exceed a contract sulfur limit. The challenge was to develop a forecasting process that would take into account the variability of the coal in the ground as well as the difference between laboratory and preparation plant sulfur reduction efficiency, and the effects of mining coal with multiple units. This paper describes how geostatistics and simulation techniques were used to meet this challenge.

Hydropower produces almost two-thirds of the world’s renewable electricity generation and delivers a major contribution on the ambition of the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) with a range of benefits to society and environment. These include clean and flexible generation and storage in addition to reduced dependence on fossil fuels and avoidance of pollutants. The Limberg III PSP is one of the European projects that addresses the implementation of the UN SDGs. The challenge of the project is the construction of a 770 m long pressure shaft to be excavated with a TBM at an inclination of 42°.

SOME years ago, in the manufacture of seamless tubing from an alloy steel containing 0.07 per cent maximum carbon, 18 per cent chromium and 8 per cent nickel, at the plant of The Babcock & Wilcox Tube Co., a peculiar type of piercing defect was noticed. This defect was definitely associated with certain heats of the alloy and was independent of any of the variables of mill operation and billet-heating condition. A thorough analysis of the defective material yielded but one clue to the reason for its abnormal behavior in piercing and that was its oxygen content as determined by the vacuum fusion method. The oxygen content of the defective 18-8 alloy was found to be from two to three times that of the material that had pierced satisfactorily, and this incited an active interest in the vacuum fusion method for the analysis of alloy steels. After a critical survey of the literature on this subject, and considerable experimentation, an apparatus and technique were evolved that gave a fairly rapid, simple and reliable method of analysis. Samples selected from six years of tube production of 18-8 and other corrosion-resistant alloys were analyzed by this method. This paper describes the procedure and gives a correlation of the oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen contents of a number of alloy steel samples repre-sentative of good and bad tube-piercing quality.

Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority Section E8a consists principally of twin tunnels 1,713 meters (5,620 ft) long, excavated to a diameter of 6.35 meters (20.83 ft) using an open face shield, with a primary lining of four unbolted precast concrete segments expanded at the crown, and a full circle unreinforced concrete final lining with a finished tunnel diameter of 5.08 meters (16.67 ft). The tunnels, constructed in Cretaceous age sediments, are mostly in stiff to hard clay except for a few areas along the alignment that contain dense to very dense fine sand in the upper portion of the tunnel that created a mixed face condition. At two locations unexpected heavy water inflows produced very serious problems in both tunnels. Water flows in the interface area were generally more than 378.5 1pm (100 gpm) and reached as high as 2,649.5 1pm (700 gpm) in the mixed face ground. The nature of the tunnel inflows, the consequences, and the corrective measures adopted will be the subject of this paper.
