Most of the quantity of the water soluble xanthates, used in mineral flotation, is consumed in the process. However, the residue amounts are water contaminants downstream the mineral processing operations and can be toxic to aquatic biota at concentrations of 1 mg/L. In order to be able to discharge water from tailing ponds to natural water bodies the concentration of xanthates has to be decreased. The present paper studies the uptake of potassium ethyl xanthate by directly modified with copper and lead ions natural zeolitic rock, without passing through zeolite transformation into homoionic form. Modified zeolite exhibits high, comparable with powdered activated carbon of chemical purity grade, capacity to remove potassium ethyl xanthate from model wastewater, with pH in the range of 7?9 and pollutant concentration in the range of 10-150 mg/L. The pollutant immobilization is fast. Both Cu and Pb modified zeolite behave as selective with respect to xanthate in the model wastewater, and Cu-modified zeolite possesses higher selectivity. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in partnership with Strata Products tested the sealing capability of Ventstop®? as part of an ongoing mine fire control and suppression research program. Ventstop®? is a multi-purpose, inflatable device that is produced by Minvent Solutions and is available world wide for use in the metal and nonmetal mining industry. Ventstop®? is also used in the Australian coal industry as a temporary ventilation control device. The device can be quickly deployed, is reusable and can be placed in horizontal and vertical mine voids to control dust, fumes and smoke. Deployment, multi-day inflation and air leakage tests were conducted at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Laboratory to determine the capability and limitations of Ventstop®? in a simulated coal mine setting. During the tests, Ventstop®? was also subjected to low level forces of a nearby methane gas ignition. It is thought that Ventstop®? could be used by the US coal mining industry to temporarily close an underground mine area in response to a fire or spontaneous combustion heating event, to temporarily redirect mine ventilation during longwall equipment moves or during stopping construction. This paper describes this inflatable temporary mine sealing technology and presents the results of the NIOSH tests.

Cooling stave is one of the most important equipment of blast furnace for iron making. The heat transfer performance and service life of the cooling stave, to a large extent, determines the efficiency and economy of the iron making process. In this paper, a 3-D heat transfer model of cooling stave was founded by ANSYS based on FEM theory, and the heat transfer characteristics of cooling staves which were made of different materials (cast iron, cast steel and copper) were analyzed. Then, several suggestions on choosing material of cooling staves were given according to the calculation results and the actual working conditions of the cooling staves.

The question of disposition of the slack and dust so troublesome to coal mine operators of the West has been divided by your committee chairman into three heads, viz: The preparation and transportation of fine and powdered coal. The developments along the line of low heat carbonization. The uses to which fine and pulverized coal have been put. The development of low heat carbonization has been assigned to me. This is really not a part of the subject but as it has a most important bearing on the future use of coal, I presume the chairman thought best to include it. An English committee on smoke abatement makes the statement that the burning of raw coal is "dirty, wasteful and unscientific". I will go a step further and characterize it as an "economic crime." It has been predicted by eminent scientific men that eventually no raw coal will be burned for heat or power purposes. All this will take time, experimentation and large expenditure, but it will surely come. The question of disposition of slack and dust so troublesome to coal and utilization of its by-products has been retarded by the abundance and cheapness of the raw coal, and by the abundance of suitable coking coals for metallurgical purposes. But necessity is surely, if slowly, demanding that the enormous waste ensuing from the burning of raw coal for heat and power must cease. For instance, smoke abatement investigations in Manchester, England, showed that the increased cost of household washing was about $1,250,000 per year due to smoke and soot. It is estimated that in London 200 tons of soot and smoke particles are suspended in the atmosphere over that city during dense fogs and that much more than this is emitted from the chimneys each winter day during the forenoon. As an example of what benefits a smokeless fuel gives, it is cited that in the mill town of Shaw, England, the burning of smokeless fuels in the factories has reduced the so-called fogs by about 80%. "The importance of the processing of secondary resources such as solid industrial wastes and liquid effluents as well as byroducts for the recovery of the associated metal values hardly needs any elaboration. Such processing contributes in no small measure towards the augmentation of the availability and the supply position of resources. As an added benefit, it leads to a reduction in environmental pollution caused by the undesirable waste materials. As some typical examples of secondary resources in the Indian scenario, mention can be made of spent catalysts, metal/alloy scrap, ash, consumed batteries, flue dust, slag, sludge and slime, pickling solutions, spent acids, plating rinse solutions, spent etchants, waste water from synthetic fibre manufacture and from tanneries etc .. These wastes constitute a source of a variety of non ferrous metals. In the processing of secondary resources like these, the techniques of hydrometallurgy such as solvent extraction playa pivotal role.This paper outlines the efforts made to use solvent extraction to recover (1) base metals such as copper, zinc, nickel and cobalt from a number of secondary resources like cake, and sludge (2) refractory metals like molybdenum and vanadium from sulphidic byproducts and spent catalyst and (3) nuclear metal like uranium from phosphoric acid. In the case of base metals, process flowsheet involving the use of acidic extractants such as DEHPA and PC88A have been optimised. The problem of iron removal from the leach liquor, which influences the metal recovery process significantly, has drawn a special emphasis. In the case of refractory metals, basic extractants like Alarnine 336 has been pressed into service to produce kilogramme quantities of pure salts of molybdenum and vanadium. Finally, the paper gives a brief account of plant experience in recovering uranium from phosphoric acid, using a solvent system comosed of DEHPA and TOPO."

This report describes the carbonizing properties of coals from the principal beds in Cambria County, Pa. Samples of coals from Upper and Lower Freeport and Upper and Lower Kittanning beds having estimated minable reserves of 50-million tons or more were studied by the Bureau of Mines. Cambria County coals rank either as medium-or low-volatile bituminous. A preparation study indicated that all coals tested in this county, except one sample from the Lower Freeport bed, were responsive to cleaning and would yield a product with satisfactory chemical properties for metallurgical coal. All coals tested from Cambria County yielded strong coke; however, they expand excessively when carbonized singly, and should be used only as minor constituents in metallurgical coking blends when carbonized in slot-type ovens.

"The solution of problems associated with development of a sour gas reserve will be of increasing importance in tl1e next few years if gas export is approved •by the National Energy Board. The purpose of this paper is to review briefly the history of the Carstairs gas field, and tCI describe in a general manner the reservoir, and the producing and processing facilities.HISTORYThe Carstairs gas field was discovered in April 1958 when the discovery well, Home Carstairs 10-17, was successfully completed as a gas well in the Elkton member of the Turner Valley formation. Geo-graphic location of the field is shown in Figure No. 1. Note that the field is about five miles west of the town of Carstairs, Alberta, which in turn is about 40 miles north of Calgary. Drilling subsequent to the discovery well resulted in three addition-al producing wells and one dry hole during I.958; two producing wells during 1959; and one producing well and one dry hole during 1960. Thus, seven producing wells and two dry holes have been drilled in the Carstairs field to date.In November 1959 a 12-section block in the Carstairs field was unitized on a surface acre basis. Mean-while, in June 1959, operators in the field executed an ""Interim Plant Agreement"" that provided the money needed to start construction of a joint venture processing plant and gathering system. Construction of the plant and gathering system was completed in February 1960."

Climate change is a subject of growing concern. Based on the International Energy Agency, about 19% of man made greenhouse gas emissions globally are generated by the transport sector. This paper will focus on the environmental aspects of the light-weighting in transport and the resulting savings of fuel and electricity. Aluminium is an option for lightweight applications in transport, with very high benefits not only in the use stage, but also in the stage of vehicle recycling. Life cycle assessment is used to quantify the relative benefits of light-weighting specific components of cars, commercial road vehicles, buses, ships and trains. A vehicle consists of many components, which are produced by different processes and undergo different types of end-of-life operations. This document does not intend to compare a generic aluminium vehicle with a generic "heavy materials" vehicle. It rather tries to use a pragmatic approach based on specific examples of components where aluminium is used and can be used in the design of new vehicles, also taking into account future developments. The case studies in this paper are based on real cases where aluminium was used. For each component, sensitivity analyses are applied to see the impact of specific parameters such as the end-of-life recycling rate and the use stage driving distance. Significant greenhouse gas savings by the use of aluminium are demonstrated for cars and even higher ones for trucks, buses, trains and ships. In addition, the total potential benefits of light-weighting with aluminium are shown on the global level.

The majority of efforts to improve primary copper sulfide leaching have focused on solution chemistry, temperature, O2 pressure, ultra-fine grinding, the use of catalysts, etc. Historically, very few studies have focused on the solid/solution interface. A new, patent pending approach to catalyzed, copper sulfide leaching has been discovered by FLSmidth that enables manipulation of the 2-D semi-conductor properties of chalcopyrite surfaces to the benefit of higher electrochemical reactivity. Copper dissolution rates are then further accelerated by incorporating a Stirred Media Reactor (SMRt) into the process. By using minute amounts of Cu2+ to "pre-activate" chalcopyrite, leach times have been reduced from >20 hours with incomplete Cu dissolution to <2 hours with 98+% Cu dissolution at 80°C. The pre-activation process takes only minutes to complete at temperatures of 80°C or less. The total atmospheric leaching process, incorporating the pre-activation and Stirred Media Reactor is compatible with existing SX/EW processes. Results of batch leach testing are presented and possible mechanisms are discussed.

Os aços inoxidáveis duplex caracterizam-se por apresentarem microestrutura bifásica, ferrítica-austenítica. A fração volumétrica ideal das fases é 50% de ferrita e 50% de austenita, entretanto, essa condição é de difícil obtenção quando realiza-se a união por soldagem a arco desses materiais. Neste trabalho estudou-se as melhores práticas de soldagem do aço inoxidável duplex UNS S31803 garantindo a obtenção de frações volumétricas ideais de ferrita e austenita. Foi soldado um corpo de prova pelos processos TIG e MIG-MAG. Para esse corpo de prova foi realizada a soldagem de um passe de raiz e um passe de reforço através do processo TIG e o preenchimento da junta através do processo MIG-MAG. Foram realizados os seguintes ensaios no corpo de prova: micrografia (metal base, ZAC face, ZAC raiz, face da Zona Fundida e raiz da Zona Fundida), medição da fração volumétrica de ferrita, microdureza Vickers (HV500), ensaio de tração da junta soldada, dobramento guiado, Charpy e ensaio de corrosão por pitting.

As part of the response to the increased demand for products such as iron ore, coal and gold many resource companies have identified the need to develop strategies focused on attracting high demand professionals and retaining current employees in the business. Recent graduates are entering a time where they can expect high starting salaries, attractive benefits and lifestyle options. At the same time high work expectations and large demands on both personal and professional development will also be the norm. Some of the challenges faced may include high demands on performance, working with limited resources, long hours, and tackling unfamiliar areas of work with little guidance. However, managing your career and these challenges effectively can give you valuable experience in a short amount of time. By offering situations from my relatively short, yet active, career in the mining industry during these boom times I will raise some key points on how to best leverage your commodity and make the most of a bullish market.

Canada&apos;s only current tungsten producer started up in 1962 with a small open-pit mine on the Flat River , 180 air miles north of Watson Lake, Yukon Territory. The orebody was in a contact-metamorphic skarn zone and contained about 1.5 million tons of ore grading an estimated 2.47% W03 and 0.5% copper. Near the end of the open pit , a new zone was discovered on the lower limb of the same structure, and the decision to go underground was made in 1972. The new "E Zone" contains over 4 million tons of ore grading an estimated 1.6% W03 and 0.28% Cu , and has been supplying the concentrator at about 175,0 00 tons/ year since late 1974. A continuing program of change and up-grading is necessary in the conversion from a seasonal open-pit mine with limited life to an underground operation with twenty years of reserves. Changes are necessary in plant and services as well as the mine. Also, environmental protection requirements have changed from rudimentary to rigorous over the life of the operation. This paper sums up the changes in the operation since 1971 and outlines the changes yet to come.

With the advent of the Clean Air Act and the installation of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) equipment (scrubbers) on coal fired power plants, the management of solid wastes has taken on added importance. Aside from the large amounts of fly ash and bottom ash usually generated, large quantities of liquids in the form of scrubber sludge are also produced. These wastes must be disposed of within the constraints of land and water quality regulations. This paper describes the practices adopted by the electric utility industry in denting with this problem, including methods of generation and treatment, quantities and characteristics of the materials, and transportation and disposal practices. The paper also briefly describes final product characteristics and several applications for commercial utilization and land reclamation.

In view of the increasing environmental regulations that have been promulgated in the last 30 years, non-ferrous smelters and refineries have learnt to handle effectively the process waste streams that need to be bled from the system for impurities&apos; control. The cations of concern are copper, lead, zinc, cadmium, mercury, thallium, nickel, silver, sodium and potassium. Anionic species of arsenic and selenium also need to be addressed, Sulfates and chlorides-not a major concern at present-have come under scrutiny in the recent past. The current paper reviews several treatment options with reference to a) types of waste streams processed b)process chemistry c )discharge options and recovery of treated water and d) sludge disposal. The long term goal of any smelter and/or refinery should be to achieve zero liquid discharge from the plant. Methods to obtain zero discharge are discussed.

For the last decade Australia has been the leading exporter of both steam and coking coal. In the ten-year period 1989 - 1998 steam coal exports increased by 93 per cent and metallurgical coal exports increased by 50 per cent. However, profitability of the steam coal sector has been disappointing. The coking coal sector, especially the hard coking coal segment, has fared better but its profitability was more because of its ability to maintain relatively high prices rather than its inherent productivity. Until quite recently the Australian coking coal sector was widely expected to be able to maintain this comfortable state without undue effort for the three major æpartnersÆ; the companies, the State Government and the unions. But coking coal could now be heading down the path followed by steam coal that ends with long-term over-supply and, despite steady improvements in productivity, poor profitability. Steam coal entered the ænewÆ era of long-term over-supply some years ago. Over-supply was due to the rapid increase in production in Indonesia, often from new mines and Australia. AustraliaÆs production rise was underlain by the apparent belief that the best way to lower costs was to increase production. In the first couple of years costs didnÆt fall much but the additional tonnage was sold at lower and lower prices into the spot market. By mid-1998 the difference between the contract price set with Japanese utilities and spot sales was often in excess of $US12 per tonne. Japanese contract prices and tonnages have since fallen significantly. Steam coal has moved from being a product to being a commodity. Any profits are due more to the low Australian dollar rather than inherent mine productivity. Seaborne coking coal trade has been dominated by Australia, Canada and the USA, with the USA becoming less competitive. Unfortunately, when the Queensland capacity expansion was well down the pipeline, the Asian financial crisis occurred and the Japanese economy entered what appears to be a long-term recession. Contract prices fell 18 per cent, tonnages decreased and some mines have been reclassified as supplying lower priced coking coal. The paper analyses past and expected future trends in labour and mine productivity, rail freight and FOB export port cash and total costs of the Australian steam coal and coking coal sectors and discusses the market outlook for Australia. The future economic viability of the industry is analysed and discussed in the light of the rapidly changing global environment.

Since he&apos;s watching the drill and many of the controls look and feel alike, he hits the wrong control and crushes his hand. ? Six hours into the night shift, an ore truck driver dozes off. The truck plows over the berm and down into the pit. ? Fleeing a afire, a face crew sees smoke in the intake entry. Assuming the fire is ahead, they cross over to another entry, but soon encounter even worse smoke. These very different accidents have at least one factor in common: the human factor. The actions, decisions, thoughts, or perceptions of one or more humans contributed to the accident. These are just a few examples of safety problems researched by the Human Factors Group of the Pittsburgh Research Center, U.S. Department of Energy.

The purity of rare earth products depends on the ability of the reagents used to selectively promote the precipitation of the rare earth elements (REE) from impurities present in sulfuric liquors. The present study aims at investigating the conditions required to precipitate REE, either as rare earth oxalates or carbonates, from purified rare earth sulfuric liquor with a low Al3+ and UO2 2+ and a very high Ca2+, Mg2+, Mn2+, and SO4 2− impurity content. The rare earth sulfuric liquor was obtained in a previous study by the reaction of a rare earth ore with sulfuric acid, pyrolysis at 700 °C/2 h, cooling at 20 °C, and water leaching. The impurities such as Fe3+, Th4+, and PO4 3− were completely removed from the liquor in two consecutive neutralization steps. In order to recover the REE, the purified rare earth liquor was then treated with oxalic acid and sodium carbonate. Rare earth oxides (REO) precipitated with oxalic acid displayed a very high purity (99.2% w/w) and low impurity content. In contrast, the rare earth carbonates precipitated with sodium carbonate presented a comparatively lower REO content (68.5% w/w) and 94.2% of purity, but with a higher content of impurities. Better precipitating conditions were achieved at 60 °C, compared with 20 °C, and under stoichiometric reagent consumption, with REE precipitation efficiencies higher than 96%. The dosage above the stoichiometric condition caused the precipitation of calcium oxalates and co-precipitation of rare earth sulfates when oxalic acid is used, and precipitation of calcium, manganese, and uranium carbonates and also a co-precipitation of rare earth sulfate when sodium carbonate were used. An integrated flowsheet to produce a high-quality rare earth product from rare earth sulfuric liquor containing some impurities is proposed.

Froth flotation has been used industrially for many years to separate valuable minerals from their associated gangue constituents. Notwithstanding the significance of this process to the mineral industry, many of the engineering tools needed for the evaluation of the flotation process are still in a developmental stage. Traditionally, the evaluation of a flotation test on both the laboratory and industrial scale has been based largely on a rougher recovery value achieved at a sufficiently long time to give a "final" or "equilibrium" recovery value. The assumption of a time equivalency for a given recovery value between various flotation tests or between laboratory tests and industrial operation underlies this method of evaluation. Such an assumption implies that flotation is an "equilibrium engineering process" and that the time-rate recovery of material from the flotation cell is not affected by changes in the flotation system. It has been shown by Bushell (1) and by Klimpel (2) that the assumption of time equivalency between various flotation tests is unjustified. Consequently, better tools are needed for evaluating flotation test results, Because mathematical flotation models which incorporate both a recovery and a rate function can completely describe flotation time-recovery profiles, they can provide an excellent tool to evaluate flotation tests.
