An extensive study involving laboratory testing and computer modeling has been performed to assess the technical and economic feasibility of utilizing the recently developed minidisc cutters on roadheaders for hard rock mining. The results show that heavy duty roadheaders fitted with minidiscs can excavate hard rock formations at acceptable production rates and cutter costs. This paper presents and discusses the results of this study together with the ongoing developmental efforts of this technology, which include laboratory testing of a roadheader cutting drum with minidiscs and full scale field testing of a machine in hard rock

The inhalation of dust has been a problem in the mining industry since antiquity. Crystalline silica is now known to be the cause of silicosis, a form of pneumoconiosis that is associated with excessive exposure to respirable particles in some mining and industrial environments. Crystalline silica was reviewed by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in 1986 and classified as a Group 2A, Probably Carcinogenic to Humans in Volume 42 and Supplement 7 of the IARC Monographs (1987). In 1996, IARC reviewed additional literature and studies published in the intervening decade and recommended that quartz and cristobalite, two polymorphs of crystalline silica, be listed as Group 1, Carcinogenic to Humans. Their recommendations and reclassification were published in 1997 in IARC Monographs 68.[2] In both Monographs, IARC classified amorphous silicas as Group 3, Inadequate Evidence for Carcinogenicity to Humans.

The Functional Performance Equation for ball milling circuits provides plant staff with a new means to improve circuit performance. However, successful execution of a plant project, with verifiable circuit processing performance improvements, requires a significant number of accompanying steps beyond the equation alone. In order to identify and articulate all these steps, a study with plant staff from two milling operations and a grinding media supplier was undertaken. ?Task analysis? of improving plant grinding performance was carried out. This analysis called for the development of a number of system components, and ultimately yielded a ?Plant Grinding Circuit Processing Performance Management/Improvement System.?

Conventional flotation technology has historically failed to achieve high recoveries when treating <15 µm particles (Lynch et al, 1981). The new StackCell™ flotation technology was developed to specifically target this particle size range, and was tested at pilot plant scale at Mt Keith Nickel Concentrator. The streams tested, Slimes Rougher Tailings and Fines/Slimes Cleaner Tailings, represent 21% and 11% of the total nickel lost to tailings in the plant. Laboratory scale test work indicated that an economically significant fraction of these losses was consistently available to be recovered by additional flotation. The pilot plant experimental scope included over 50 tests. A grade recovery curve for each stream was developed, as well as information on the effect of ore type, feed rate, wash water, air flow, collector and frother on the performance of the cell. The single StackCell was able to achieve nickel recoveries of 16.8% and 16.5% on the Rougher Tailings and Cleaner Tailings, respectively, at grades consistent with these blocks. Additional test work of the StackCell in a cleaner scalper duty yielded final quality concentrate with a maximum nickel recovery of 59.5% for the single stage StackCell. Laboratory scale simulation of the downstream impacts of the StackCell operating as a cleaner scalper indicated a net recovery benefit of up to 2.0% for this cleaner block.Tests were completed to compare residence time requirements of the StackCell, as compared to conventional flotation. In 55 seconds, the pilot plant StackCell achieved 50% of the recovery of a 960 second laboratory scale conventional flotation on the same feed material. The apparent improvement in flotation kinetics is attributed to the novel high intensity aeration system, which provides efficient bubble-particle contact thereby shortening the residence time required to achieve high recoveries. The smaller footprint and lower energy costs of such a cell are also benefits of this technology, which is being considered for industrial scale installation as a result of this test work. Given the industry’s historical poor performance treating slimes with conventional flotation, it is clearly best practice to challenge the status quo through innovative new technology, such as the StackCell.CITATION:Hussey, L, Thanasekaran, H and Kohmuench, J, 2017. Redpath Australia is using a unique mining method for the Australian underground coal industry at Kestrel Mine Extension in the Bowen Basin, Central Queensland.The project involves completing two separate drifts from the surface for access to the German Creek Coal Seam located approximately 230 m below the existing surface. The scope of work is primarily the construction of two drifts; the first is 1577 m at 1 in 6 gradient and the second 1874 m at 1 in 8 gradient. Each drift has been developed by a Mitsui S200 roadheader with modifications to allow for a continuous tunnelling/mining cycle operation. A shotcrete boom has been fitted to the left hand side of the machine with the operators console located at ground level. Another operators console is elevated on the right hand side of the machine to allow operation of the rotary drill boom which is mounted on a slide rail to allow flexibility of positioning depending on the stage of the cycle. In support of the roadheader activities, an integrated conveyor system mounted on a sliding floor arrangement is able to be advanced as the mining face progresses. This sliding floor consists of four 1.5 m × 6 m sections that utilise hydraulic rams to ‘walk’ inbye, allowing room for installation of precast concrete floor panels for final floor completion. This method borrows from the tunnelling and construction industries to eliminate place-change delays in the mining cycle by enabling complete ground support installation without retreat of the primary development machine from the face. The aim is to reduce the project duration with the completion of final floor and services to within 30 m of the operating face as it advances.

In the 1990’s, Técnicas Reunidas developed the Modified ZINCEX® Process to recover zinc from ores and secondary materials. The heart of this process was the use of solvent extraction to produce purified zinc electrolyte instead of traditional zinc dust cementation. This development was commercialized by Reunion Mining and Anglo American for primary ore at the Skorpion mine in Namibia with the first SHG zinc produced in May 2003. Horsehead Corporation through Horsehead Metal Products, Inc., its wholly owned subsidiary, is presently commercializing the MZP for the treatment of Waelz oxide. This paper will review open source information about the lessons learned and process modifications that have occurred at Skorpion over the past decade. It will also provide an update on Horsehead’s facility being constructed in Rutherford County, North Carolina.

"Intrepid Potash, Inc.’s Carlsbad East facility has refined sylvite and produced muriate of potash (MOP) since 1965. In addition to MOP, Intrepid Potash began recovering the mineral langbeinite from a mixed ore reserve in 2005. In 2011 a new langbeinite recovery process for the coarse (+850 micron) size fraction was constructed to enhance the overall langbeinite recovery. Based on the limited mixed ore reserve and an abundance of langbeinite ore reserves the transition of the East plant to a langbeinite only facility was targeted for 2021. Due to a decreasing grade of the mixed ore reserve, declining sales pricing, and high sylvite operating costs a strategic decision was made to accelerate this transition into 2016. To enable a successful transition, a fines recovery system needed to be developed, constructed and implemented. This paper describes the advancement of langbeinite processing at Intrepid Potash and the planning, development and successful execution of the transition to a langbeinite only operation. BACKGROUND Langbeinite (K2SO4·2MgSO4) is a double salt containing potassium sulfate (K2SO4) and magnesium sulfate (MgSO4). It is used as fertilizer and in the industry is described as Sulfate of Potash Magnesia. It is attractive as a specialty fertilizer and in addition to containing a ready source of a primary nutrient potassium, it also provides two secondary essential nutrients, magnesium and sulfur. It is especially attractive for chloride sensitive crops. Langbeinite has a specific gravity of 2.8, a Mohs hardness of 4.2, and is brittle thus very friable. It is the hardest of the saline minerals, and despite its relative softness on the Mohs scale can be very abrasive in process environments and in field applications, probably due to its conchoidal cleavage. Its solubility at 240 g/l is less than the solubility of sylvite (KCl) or halite (NaCl) and due to even slower relative dissolution kinetics washing with cold water has been a common practice for upgrading langbeinite ores. The solubilization/crystallization relationship for langbeinite is different from the majority of other evaporite minerals in that once langbeinite is solubilized it does not form langbeinite again. Instead it gives up one mole of magnesium sulfate, takes on various waters of hydration and precipitates out as either schoenite (K2SO4·MgSO4·6H2O) or leonite (K2SO4·MgSO4·4H2O) depending on temperature. Due to its partial solubility and phase transitions at its surface when exposed to moisture, there is strong cohesion between wetted particles; the resulting stickiness of the upgraded products can create significant materials handling issues unless processed in slurry form or at relatively low moisture levels. Langbeinite has been produced commercially from two locations, the Kalush and Stebnik regions in the Cartpathian Mountains of former Poland and now the Ukraine and from the Permian Basin in New Mexico (Garrett, 1996; Smith 1949). Current production is from two operators in the U.S., Mosaic and Intrepid Potash."

Adicionalmente, el estudio observa que los volúmenes de tratamiento y los costos asociados a los permisos de descarga se han visto reducidos porque existe un 100% de recirculación del recurso y todas las tecnologías implementadas están alineadas con los actuales Estándares de Calidad Ambiental (ECA).

Cancrinite is one eonstituentof "red muds," a high-volume waste product of alumina production by the Bayer process. The Bureau of Mines determined the thermochemical properties of cancrinite as part of a program to provide such data for minerals of industrial importance. Cancrinite [Na7.68(A16Si6024)(N03)1.68 (H2O)4.1] was synthesized by reacting aluminum silicate gel with a solution of NaOH and NaN03, and the composition was determined by chemical analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. The heat of solution was determined by hydrofluoric acid solution calorimetry. The standard enthalpy of formation at 298.15 K, ?Hf°298, is ?Hf°298 = -3,487.97 ±2.6 kcal/mol, and the standard enthalpy of formation from the oxides and NaN03, ?H°298, is ?H°298 = -215.20 ±l.8 kcal/mol.

Accurate, repeatable density measurements of a coal-magnetite-water slurry are difficult to achieve using a nuclear density gauge. Changes in the coal-to-magnetite solids ratio cause fluctuations in the readings of nuclear gauges. To investigate this problem the Electric Power Research Institute's Coal Cleaning Test Facility compared the performance of a nuclear density gauge on a coal-magnetite-water slurry with the performance of a differential pressure gauge modified with a new pressure sensor. A second aim of these preliminary tests was to determine if the differential pressure gauge is also sensitive to the type of solids in the slurry. This paper explains current slurry density measurement practices, describes the nuclear and differential pressure gauges used in the CCTF tests, and presents test methods and results.

"The Pacific Nickel property lies 7 miles northwest of Hope and 100 miles east of Vancouver, in the Coast Mountains of southwestern British Columbia. Nickel-copper sulphides were discovered in ultrabasic rocks on this property in 1923 and the deposits were explored by Pacific Nickel Mines until 1937, then again between 1951 and 1954 by Pacific Nickel Mines and by Newmont Mining Corporation through its subsidiary,Canadian Ore DepositsWestern Nickel. The property was studied by C. E. Cairnes (1) in 1924, by W. E. Cockfield and J. F. Walker (2) in 1933, by H. C. Horwood (3), (4) in 1936 and 1937, and by the writer in 1951 and 1952. Except for a few thousand tons for trial shipments, the property has never been mined. Indicated ore reserves now total somewhat over one million tons averaging about 1.4 per cent nickel and 0.5 per cent copper, with lesser values in precious metals and cobalt.GEOLOGIC SETTINGThe nickeliferous ultrabasic rocks form part of the core of a 15-milewide block of Late Palæozoic metamorphic rocks and Mesozoic intrusives which extend north-south between the coast batholith of British Columbia and the Chelan batholith of Washington. Margins of this block are faulted in part against less metamorphosed volcanic and sedimentary rocks largely of Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous age (Geo/. Surv., Canada, Map 737 A, 1942). Serpentinites, suggestive of deep transgressive structure, occur within the block, and also at its east margin along faults which are southern extensions of the regional Yalakom-Fraser River fault zone. Some of the other mineral deposits in the Hope area appear to be spatially related to these major faults.The mineralization at Pacific Nickel occurs almost exclusively within a stock-like mass of ultra basic rocks which mingle with, and partly cut, a larger batholithic mass of genetically related diorites and norites of late Mesozoic age (Figure 1 ). The ultra basic mass consists essentially of fresh, medium-grained hornblendic pyroxenite with peridotitic cores and with a remarkable margin of pegmatitic hornblendite. The most hornblendic rocks appear to be chiefly products of reaction and replacement of the pyroxene and olivine rocks. The mineralization consists of disseminated and massive pyrrhotite, with subordinate pentlandite and chalcopyrite, amongst fresh olivine, bronzite, and, Jess commonly, augite and hornblende. Both the ultrabasics and mineralization are cut by small hornblenditic and dioritic dykes, and by veins and alteration zones."

"Construction of the longest road tunnel in Mexico is part of Acapulco’s alternate roadway to the scenic roadway project. This article provides a brief summary regarding details of the construction since the project began. Work was done by skilled engineers and Mexican workers that includes outstanding execution of the work in an urban and tourist area. This project will have a strong impact on the steady development of the port of Acapulco.Project locationAcapulco’s Alternate Roadway Project is currently under construction in the city of Acapulco, located in the Guerrero state of Mexico. It is an 8-km (5-mile) long roadway that starts at the Icacos neighborhood, heading toward Acapulco’s airport, crossing a drill-and-blast tunnel that is 3,160 m (10,350 ft) long under Veladero Park, a mountainous area. The tunnel overburden reaches a depth of 380 m (1,250 ft) approximately at the central point of the horizontal alignment, and continues with a 4-km (2.5-mile) long elevated road to connect to the existing Viaducto Diamante toll road (Fig. 1).Tunnel construction has already been finished using two portals for drilling and blasting operations; Brisamar Portal on the west side and Cayaco Portal on the east side (Fig. 2).Geometric dataOnly two main excavation cross-sections were considered in the executive design. The first one corresponds to the running tunnel for a three-lane vehicle section, with crosssection areas between 120 and 130 m2 (1,290 and 1,400 sq ft) taking into consideration different geological and geotechnical conditions to be encountered (Fig. 3).The second one corresponds to eight emergency bays, each one 50 m (164 ft) long, laid down within the tunnel outline, located at 400 m (1,312 ft) from each one with excavation cross-sections between 156 to 169 m2 (1,680 to 1,820 sq ft), in accordance to geological and geotechnical conditions to be encountered (Fig. 4).The tunnel’s horizontal alignment is completely straight, having a small curve within the vertical alignment on Cayaco portal, because there were some differences in levels when tunnel excavation started. Tunnel slopes were designed in such a way that rainwater does not run down into the tunnel at any time."

Dross, a major by-product of all processes involving molten aluminum, forms at the surface of the molten metal as the latter reacts with the furnace atmosphere. It generally represents 1 to 5 wt% of the melt, depending on the process, and contains on average about 50% free aluminum dispersed in an oxide layer. Since aluminum production is highly energy-intensive, dross recycling is very attractive from both the energy and the economic standpoints. The conventional recycling process using salt rotary furnaces is thermally inefficient and environmentally non-acceptable because of the production of salt slags. Hydro-Quebec has developed and patented a new salt-free technology using a rotary furnace heated by an electric arc between two graphite electrodes, called DROSCAR®. A 600-kW pilot plant in operation at LTEE is in use to demonstrate the process. This process provides aluminum recovery rates over 90%, using a highly energy efficient, environmentally sound production method. In 1994, 400 tonnes of aluminum dross were treated in this facility and several tests on various types of dross have also been conducted in early 1995. A report on the results will be presented.

Canadian Electrolytic Zinc has developed the "cement-stabilization of jarosite residue" Garofix) process to stabilize zinc plant jarosite residues for disposal. The cement-jarosite mixtures cure quickly, have good mechanical strength and low hydraulic permeability; they possess good neutralizing capability and chemical stability. In the jarofix process, Portland cement partly decomposes jarosite to form (SO4MOH)12.nH2O, ferric hydroxide and an alkali sulphate. Approximately 40% of the jarosite reacts in mixtures containing 30% cement. The jarofix product also contains various Ca-Al-Fesilicate-sulphate-hydrate phases and gypsum, which bond the individual particles together imparting mechanical strength and reducing the permeability. Most of the reactions take place in the first few hours of curing. Ammonium jarosite is slightly more reactive than sodium jarosite but releases NH3 gas; water-soluble Zn in the jarosite residue is stabilized in the cement reaction products.

"X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is the most common technique used for online slurry assaying in base metal flotation applications. Typically, assays from feed, concentrate and tailings slurries are used to monitor and control the flotation circuit, with possible additional sampling locations in other main slurry flows inside the circuit. The elemental content detection from the XRF spectrum is relatively straightforward as the spectrum contains element-specific peaks whose height corresponds to the element concentration in the sample. However, centralised XRF analysers measure the elemental concentrations line-by-line, which may increase the sampling interval for an individual line and cause unnecessary response delays, especially in large flotation plants. Reflectance spectroscopy is an emerging technique that can be used to obtain more frequent measurements from slurries. The measurement is based on the mineral-specific absorbance of light in the visible and near-infrared (VNIR) wavelength range. Due to this relatively inexpensive and simple measurement system, it is possible to conduct the measurement simultaneously in several slurry lines. However, the information contained in the VNIR spectra is more difficult to interpret as concentrations of all the minerals in the sample contribute to the measured spectrum and changes in solids content, particle size and mineralogy disturb the elemental content estimation. Therefore, frequent calibration of the measurement is required. This study presents the application of combined reflectance spectrum and XRF measurements for rapid online slurry assaying in a copper-nickel flotation plant. The XRF assays are utilised as calibration samples for the reflectance spectrum measurement, keeping the calibration model up-to-date. The rapid reflectance spectrum analysis is then used to provide an almost continuous estimate of the slurry contents, enabling further improved process monitoring and control.Citation:Haavisto, O, Maksimainen, T, Rantala, A, Timperi, J and Kaartinen, J, 2016. A major investigative' program was conducted on the development of an acceptable substitute organic binder for bentonite for the pelletizing of the Iron Ore Company of Canada's Carol concentrate. The first phase of the program covered an evaluation of several organic binders in laboratory tire balling in order to identify the most promising potential organic binders. Based on the green ball quality obtained, Peridur C-10, Alchem 8C26 and peat moss were selected for full scale pot-grate testwork. The selected binders were tested with various pelletizing mixes (acid, dolomite, limestone and fully fluxed). The pot-grate test results showed that an acceptable pellet quality can be produced with the use of Peridur C-10.

"In this paper, the room temperature friction and deformation properties of various polycrystalline diamonds; i.e. aggregates of diamond crystals with a ""binder"" phase of cobalt and a polycrystalline coating produced by a chemical vapour deposition processes (CVD) were studied when softer metallic and ceramic sliders were used. The experiments were conducted· at relatively low sliding speeds (10 mm/min), in a vacuum of 10-5 mbr after having cleaned the specimen surfaces by out-gassing them for about 30 min at 800 °C. As a result of increasing the number of traversals significant wear of the coated diamond by softer metallic sliders (aluminium and mild steel) was observed. With ceramic sliders, it is shown that the multiple traversals result in the formation of wear groove. With diamond silicon carbide, high friction and adhesion lead to significant metal transfer which then pre-empts cumulative deformation of the harder materials. With the diamond-cobalt composite, the friction is surprisingly low, there accumulation of wear debris on the tip of the slider but no permanent transfer of metal and the harder specimen is not damaged even after 5000 traversal.IntroductionPolycrystalline diamond is mainly produced as tool materials for the machining of hard metals and composites. Thus, the sliding friction and wear resistance are amongst the most important properties relevant to those applications.During cutting by PCD the wear mechanism is mostly influenced by the chemical affinity between the tool material and the workpiece. For example, diamond based materials are not recommended for machining ferrous materials because carbon is highly solubie in iron: This leads to the graphitisation of diamond particles and hence a high rate of diffusion wear is observed (Brookes and Lambert, 1982)."

The study was intent on assessing the socio-economic impact of a zinc mine in South Africa through the application of people-centric digital tools using a case study research methodology. The global mining industry is undergoing significant technological shifts to modernize, improve operational sustainability, and align with the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) agenda. While the case study mine is a more modernized mine, continuous improvement around the ‘social’ pillar becomes critical, and to this end application of people-centered digital tools presented as the vehicle to understand community needs and impacts. Despite considerable annual corporate social investment by mines annually, the overall impact or social return on investment is marginally understood. Towards contributing to addressing this gap, digital ESG ‘social-related’ data gathering tools for mines decision-making were developed, including the training-needs assessment tool, community-social needs assessment, small, micro, and medium enterprise (SMME) communications and engagement tool, digital leadership competencies gap assessment tool, and change management blueprint, which further allowed for customization to the mining context. Hence, the novelty of this paper relates to applying digital tools to provide real-time information of the needs of a community, both socially and economically. The findings suggested that these digital tools enabled gathering of information for the establishment of regional and operational baselines towards enabling of social investment returns in relation to socio-economic transformation development interventions. These tools have been applied to a zinc mine context, with lessons and experiences obtained through this study, invaluable to the application of these digital tool in other mines in South Africa. The study was conducted in September 2023 across five host communities, surrounding the zinc mine, in the Northern Cape region, with 120 participants involved in the application of three relevant community-related digital tools, which included the training needs, community-social needs, and SMME communications and engagement tools. It was evident that the digital ESG tools could be used for data gathering for the mine’s informed decision-making and allowed for securing of insights on community needs in near real-time, and further proved practical for community use.

"Refinements in sensor design have produced low-cost rugged elements to act as loop coupled with stable detection hardware for eddy current measurement in difficult environments. This has allowed direct dimension gauging of nonferrous and ferrous products above the curie point for absolute dimensions and electrical conductivities independently. The software was developed for the analysis of electrical conductivity profiles in CZ silicon crystal growth, then refined for monitoring bar properties and tube properties. Since in most metal working operations, speeds at the minimum of a few hundred feet per minute are encountered the design of the gauge was optimized for a rapid measurement. Independently extracting electrical conductivity provides data in some metal systems for determining the temperature of the monitored product.IntroductionThe primary reason for the use of eddy currents in gauging is that in hostile environments of metal working techniques such as laser gauging and ultrasonics are not always robust enough for in process measurements. Our goal is to use the technique of eddy current measurement as a quantitative control element in various hot and cold processing operations. Inspection in the early stages of metal and semiconductor processing is usually too costly to introduce in a well developed process and these tools are usually only employed in process development. Until recently there has been no efficient general analysis to allow real time measurements in the cylindrical and the probe geometry that could separate dimensional changes from material property changes both which effect the eddy current response. The basis for these measurements is that forward electromagnetic problem for conductors can be solved exactly for the test geometry which allows an inverse analysis to be made by relaxing the dimensions and conductivity to values which reproduce the measured response[!]. This transformation is based on analysis developed in Robert Siegfried' s thesis and was explored both by modeling and by physical measurement. This analysis was extended over the last few years to allow a more compact data set to be used to exact physical properties. The main result was that the technique would work on high ·quality physical data on as little as three test frequencies with the penalty being that the analysis is computational intensive. The main result of this work was that a quantitative inverse analysis of eddy current response would allow a general instrument to be used for a variety of measurements rather than being tailored for a specific measurement on a specific material test geometry. The development of these instruments has progressed over the last ten years for monitoring real time solidification, crystal growth[2] and hot seamless tube forming where the use of standards in traditional eddy current is limiting. The specific instrument design was dictated by the requirements of the algorithm for both frequency selection and levels of systematic noise that could be tolerated. Because the data is need for real time information this dictated that the system be a parallel multifrequency eddy current instrument feeding the same sensor. The sensor have to be simple and robust and usually a single loop or several loop of heat resistant wire or tube. This presentation is about using inversion of multifrequency eddy current data in real time to produce dimensional and property data on cylindrical conductors and planar conductors in real time. The object of the measurements is to produce dimensional outputs on measurements of conducting material without having to establish a detailed standard for each material or size tested. The dimensional measurements using eddy currents is complicated by material variations in conductivity due to temperature and composition. Those variations that are not geometric are often not of critical interest and complicate the measurement. The dimensional changes are often of more importance"

The promotion of good standards of reporting of the valuation of mineral assets in- public documents has been of concern to professional mining industry bodies, the securities industry, and. Government regulatory bodies for some time. This concern led to the National Companies and Securities Commission Release 149 (1990b) which laid down standards for Expert Reports on mining and petroleum securities, and other assets. The formation of the Australian Securities Commission provided an opportunity for a timely revision of Release 149 and the Mineral Valuation Committee was established by The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in 1991 to review the existing code, and to develop an appropriate new Code and Guidelines.
