The cadmium and cyanide are main poisonous components in cyanide electroplating cadmium waste water of an electroplating plant in Shenyang. The content of cadmium is about 26 mg/L and the content of cyanide is about 11.782 mg/L in this waste water. The main form of cadmium and cyanide are ions which are Cd2+and CN?. Because the cadmium and cyanide exceeded the standard seriously, the waste water must be disposed before it discharges. The microbiological method of treating heavy metals in wastewater has many advantages. For example, it has a fast adsorption velocity, high processing efficiency, wide range of pH and temperature, few invest, low running cost, no the second pollution and so on. At the same time, the CN? could be degradated by some microbiology. The physical nature, the chemical nature of Bacillus mucilaginosus, the adsorbing condition and adsorbing regular of Bacillus mucilaginosus to cadmium in the wastewater are studied by using Bacillus mucilaginosus as adsorbent removing cadmium from electroplating wastewater. The experimental results show that the adsorbing rate of cadmium is over 92%, under the room temperature(about 25?), stiring revolution in adsorption being 800 r/min for 30 min, pH being 5 , the bacteria being cultured after 5d with the biomass of Bacillus mucilaginosus 40g/L (wet weight). The mechanism in biosorption process of Bacillus mucilaginosus to cadmium is analyzed and discussed by TEM , Zeta potential,and infrared spectroscopy analysis. The results showed, the chemical involving is main adsorbing form, while electrostatic attraction, ions exchange, hydrogen bonding and Van Der Waals force are concerned cooperatively. ?NH2 ?, ?C=O?, ?C=O?NH?CH2, ?CH3, ?OH are main adsorbing groups. At the same time, the floatablity of removing cyanide by Bacillus mucilaginosus is explored.

The composite cathode system based on Ce0.9Gdo.1O2_,5 electrolyte with a painted cathode was used for an intermediate temperature (500-700°C) solid oxide fuel cell. This cathode system was chosen due to its excellent thermal expansion match to the electrolyte, its relatively high conductivity (115 S cm-1 at 700°C), and its low activation energy for oxygen reduction (99 kJ/mol). It was found that the decrease of sintering temperature of the composite cathode system produces a significant decrease in charge transfer resistances to a level of 0.25 SI cm2. The conductivity measurements of porous samples produced values between 40 and 88 S/cm for porosities of 30-40%.

Growing demand for valuable battery materials and environmental issues from battery disposal make the recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) essential. Specifically, the green approaches using organic reagents have garnered many attentions for battery recycling. In this study, a synergetic organic leaching system using methanesulfonic acid (MSA) of strong organic acid and citric acid (CA) with good chelating ability was investigated to extract valuable metals from LiCoO2. Hydrogen peroxide was used as a reducing agent to enhance leaching kinetics. Cobalt extraction of 98% and lithium extraction of 97 % were achieved in the optimized condition; 2.4M MSA, 1.6M CA, 1.0 vol% H2O2, S/L ratio 80 g/L, 85 °C, and 1 h. The optimal leaching condition of the MSA-CA mixed leaching system exhibited good applicability to various cathode scraps, such as LiCoO2, LiNixMnyCo1- x-yO2, and LiNixCoyO2. The dissolved Co and Li ions in the MSA-CA leachate were selectively recovered with high recovery efficiencies of 99 % and 97 % as Co3O4 and Li3PO4, respectively. The recovered Co3O4 and Li3PO4 were utilized to regenerate cathode materials. LiCoO2 and LiFePO4 were also synthesized through a solid-state reaction and hydrothermal method. The recycling process based on the MSA-CA-H2O2 synergetic leaching system was proposed, and it might be applied as a green and economical organic leaching system for the recycling of various types of spent LIBs.

[RESULTS OF THE PRIMARY CONVENTIONAL PERFORMANCE AND COST MODEL OF THE UNIT OPERATIONS OF UNDERGROUND PERCUSSIVE DRILLING AND BLASTING]

The production of high strength iron ore sinter for blast furnace iron making unit was developed by optimizing the granulometry of less than − 0.150 mm fines in sinter base mix which consists of iron ore fines (− 10 mm size with 0.150 mm: 41%), beneficiation plant jig concentrate, i.e., washed ore (− 3 + 0.150 mm size with − 0.150 mm 3 to 9%), beneficiation plant concentrate (− 0.150 mm size 97%), limestone, dolomite, coke breeze, lime, sinter return fines, direct reduced iron (DRI plant) fines, and micropellets produced from steel plant waste. The sintering process consists of preparation of base mix, mixing, and production of nodules using mixing and nodulizing drum by maintaining the optimum moisture, transferring of nodules to the sintering machine, and firing of sinter by applying optimum suction pressure. To optimize the < 0.150 mm fines in sinter base mix, the − 10-mm size iron ore fines was replaced with washed ore. The size analysis, granulation index (G index), and optimization of moisture w.r.t. sinter bed permeability were carried out by varying the washed ore addition from 0 to 55% in sinter base mix to vary the − 0.150 mm fine size. With decrease in washed ore addition from 55 to 0% in sinter base mix the finer fraction, i.e., − 0.150 mm in sinter base mix increased from 9.4 to 26.7%. Granulation (G) index increased from 1.46 to 3.10, sinter bed permeability increased from 33 to 53 Japanese Permeability Unit (JPU), and balling index increased from 1.4 to 3.0. With increase in − 0.150 mm fines in the sinter base mix from 9.4 to 26.7%, the sinter tumbler index (T.I) increased and sinter reduction degradation index (RDI) decreased. Increase in sinter strength and decrease in sinter RDI was due to increase in formation of Silico ferrite of calcium and aluminium (SFCA) phase and decrease in pore phase. The SFCA is the main bonding phase in iron ore sinter, and it provides strength to sinter. Sinter base mix with − 0.150 mm fines 18.9% (washed ore addition 25%) achieved desired sinter properties with moisture 8.0%, G index 2.44, balling index 2.3, and sinter bed permeability > 45JPU. Decreased the sinter properties with washed ore addition in sinter base mix beyond 25% due to decrease in − 0.150 mm fines in sinter base mix. Further, to improve the sinter properties with washed ore 30 to 45%, 3 to 10% beneficiation plant concentrate, i.e., − 0.150 mm fines was added to maintain the 18.9% of − 0.150 mm fines in sinter base mix. From the laboratory sintering studies, it was found that minimum 18.9% (range from 18.9 to 26.7%) − 0.150 mm fines should be maintained in the sinter base mix to achieve desired sinter properties.

The Timbarra opencut gold mine is located about 30 km(19 miles) southeast of Tenterfield in northern NSW some 4 hours by car from Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland in Australia. It was a small operation designed to produce about 40000 ounces of gold per annum utilising contract mining and company owned crushing plant feeding heap leach pads. This is a standard setup except that the mine owner was in charge of all aspects of drill & blast design even though a contract drilling & blasting (shotfiring) service was being provided. The major problem was that the blasting operations were yielding massive amounts of oversize due to the jointed partially weathered nature of the granite. This was adversely affecting all downstream aspects of the operation as well reducing gold output as ore boulders were being dozed over the side of the mine as they were impinging on mining productivity. The oversize problem had to be solved as the mine was struggling to achieve design gold output. Significant design & trialing effort using minesite resources were utilised to reduce the oversize but this failed even when powder factors up to 1kg/bcm(1.68lb/yd) were used. Dyno Consult from Dyno Nobel were therefore called to investigate, review & trial options to reduce oversize from the top flitch.

The San Carlos lead deposit in northeast Chihuahua yielded approximately one million tons of galena ore from a blanket-like deposit. Countryrock, composed of Cretaceous limestones and calcareous shales as old as late Albian-early Aptian, and an underlying undated quartzite series, has been warped into a northwest trending anticline and has been invaded by a light-colored holocrystalline igneous rock. Magnetite and contact metamorphic minerals heterogeneously mixed with variable amounts of pyrite, sphalerite and galena, are concentrated along the anticlinal axis where they replaced magnesia-rich argillaceous sediments above the quartzite contact. Magnetite and associated silicates were deposited under near-contact conditions. Following a period of post-magnetite shattering, pyrite, sphalerite and galena were introduced at lower temperatures. Galena and associated dolomite or magnesite, the final phase of mineralization, are concentrated at the top of the deposit near the anticlinal crest and extend upward into isoclinally folded dolomitic argillites. The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory studies to determine the feasibility of chlorine-oxygen leaching for treating low-grade zinc sul-fide flotation concentrates. Recovery of zinc sulfides by flotation from complex fine-grained sulfide ores is substantially higher in low-grade bulk sulfide concentrates than in the high-grade cleaned concen-trates required for smelter feed. However, there is no commercial process in the United States for the treatment of low-grade bulk zinc sul-fide concentrates. Leaching experiments using reactors of 500-mL and I-gal capacity were conducted on a bulk concentrate containing 19.3 pct Zn, 35.6 pct Fe, and 39.4 pct S. The effects of pressure, temperature, and percent solids on extraction were investigated. The chlorine-oxygen leaching procedure showed promise for treating the concentrates. Zinc extractions of 95 pct or more were obtained by leaching at 50 pct solids in the temperature range of 1000 to 1200 C. Zinc extractions by leaching with chlorine followed by oxygen at reactor pressures of 50 to 100 psig were independent of pressure.

"In the blast furnace slag, titanium disseminated in various mineral phases Titanium could be concentrated mainly in perovskite, which could be selectively precipitated and grown by optimizing the operation factors like the slag composition, temperature of heat treatment and additive agents. This study aims at establishing the titanium slag mineralogy and its distribution in the treated slag and the as-received slag, as well as the methods of perovskite separation. After heat treatment, the grain size was grown from 5 - 20µm to 80 - 200µm, the distribution of Ti02 in perovskite was increased from 48% to 81 %, the morphology was changed from snow-shaped grain to coarsening dendrites or equiaxed crystals. A concentrate were produced by gravity separation analyzing 35.25% Ti02 with a recovery of 68.28% and a tailing analyzing 9.53% Ti02 , and a possibility of flotation upgrading was discussed. I INTRODUCTION CHINA is rich in mineral resources of titanium, 92.4% of which is vanadium-titanium bearing magnetite. About 53% titanium were in iron concentrate after mineral processing, by which the blast furnace slag containing about 25% TiO2 were produced[11 • The content of TiO2 in such slag is too low to separate titanium dioxide, and it is also too high to produce slag cement[21. It has been accumulated to 50 million tons so far, which is still increasing at a rate of 3 million tons per year, and results in a waste of titanium resources and pollution of environment. Due to the dispersed distribution of titanium component in various mineral phases, very fine grain(<10µm) and complex interfacial combination, it is very difficult to recovery titanium component from the slag by traditional separating technique. In this paper, a novel technique to recovery titanium from the waste slags was proposed [3H4l, on which three continuous processes were involved: selective concentrating, selective growing and selective separating. Perovskite was designed as a titanium-rich phase, in which the most titanium was concentrated promptly, then perovskite could be selectively grown and coarsened by optimizing the heat treatment and the appropriate additives [ 5l[6l. The grain size of perovskite phase was larger than 80 µm, and the crystals appeared as coarsening dendrites or equiaxial grains like lump."

"In March 2003 the CIM Council adopted and approved the document “Standards and Guidelines for Valuation of Mineral Properties” as developed by the Special Committee of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum on Valuation of Mineral Properties (CIMVal). The document is referred to as the CIMVal Standards and Guidelines. The document evolved from a specific recommendation by The Mining Standards Task Force (MSTF) of the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Ontario Securities Commission in its Final Report (January 1999) that the CIM form a committee of valuation practitioners to review and advise on approaches to valuation of Mineral Properties. The CIMVal Standards and Guidelines are organized into two parts: •,Standards which are general rules in the Valuation of Mineral Properties. The use of the Standards is mandatory if the Valuation Report is stated to follow CIMVal (although not mandatory in the sense of having regulatory authority). Definitions are given at the beginning of the Standards. •,Guidelines which elaborate on the Standards and, while not mandatory, provide guidance and best practices which are highly recommended to be followed in the Valuation of Mineral Properties.CIMVal specifies requirements for the Qualified Valuator who has the responsibility for choosing the appropriate approaches and methods for the valuation of mineral properties. With regard to the specifics of the application and practice of valuation approaches and methods, CIMVal directs the Qualified Valuator to the large body of published papers, published valuations, presentations and court judgments to guide his or her choice. This is also the approach taken by VALMIN (Australia) and SAMVAL (South Africa). To facilitate the dissemination of industry practice, the CIMVal Committee organized a “Valuation Day” at the CIM Annual General Meeting in Toronto (Mining Millennium 2000), on March 8, 2000. Industry experts presented papers on valuation of Mineral Properties which were subsequently published in a proceedings volume and individually ad technical papers in the CIM Bulletin. The Management and Economics Society of CIM has continued to identify and publish papers on valuation in the CIM Bulletin and Magazine. The present document gathers in one place the CIMVal Standards and Guidelines, the papers from the 2000 Valuation Day, and a number of subsequent papers that illustrate industry practice for the valuation of mineral properties."

The milling of silver ores has arrived at a great degree of perfection in the mining districts of our Western States and Territories, and I hare thought the record of the practical results obtained at the present time, in a few of the principal districts, would prove of value arid interest to many of our members, both at home and abroad. An American silver mill is composed, in descending order from where the ore is dumped, of: 1st. A rock-breaker, usually of the Blake or Alden pattern; 2d. The battery of stamps, the number of which varies from 5 to 120, generally in batteries of 5 or 10 heads, so arranged that a single battery may stand while the others are running; 3d. The tanks where the crushed ore settles (if it is a met stamping-mill), or of a drying-floor if the crushing is done dry; 4th. Amalgamating pans ; 5th. Settling pans ; 6th. Agitators or pans in which mercury escaping in the tailings is caught; 7th. Blanket sluices, over which the tailings run, and where mercury and unamalgamated sulplides are saved. A reference to the engravings (see plate), which show one of the latest forms of an 80stamp silver-mill run by a turbine water-wheel, will show clearly the arrangement of the several parts. THE ONTARIO, UTAH, SILVER MILL. One of the best examples of a silver-mill, and at the same time one of the most successful concerns in the West, is the mill of the Ontario Silver Mining Company, near Salt Lake, in Utah. This mill treats the ore from the Ontario mine, ore which at present is very base, being composed of zinc, lead, and silver sulphides and silver chloride in a quartz gangue. This study provides a reasonable evaluation of the Mg-B binary system. Magnesium and Boron (Mg-B) alloys were investigated to determine their thermodynamic properties employing solid state electrochemical cells based on CaF2 electrolyte represented as –Pt; Ar= MgþCaMgF4 f gCaF2 k kf½Mg B alloy þ CaMgF4 g=Ar; Pt+ Investigations were performed over the temperature range of 773–873 K to measure the electromotive force (EMF), which was used to derive the partial Gibbs Free energies of the alloys in the composition range of XB = 0.07 to 0.95. The activities of Mg were also calculated from partial Gibbs Free energies. The activities of Mg in MgB2, MgB4, and MgB7 were expressed as a function of temperature respectively, ln aMg = 4.27–9.32 × 103/T, ln aMg = −7.54 + 6.67×103/T, and ln aMg = 4.93–19.57 × 103/T, where T is the temperature in K. From this expression, the activity of Mg for these intermediate phases can be extrapolated at a higher temperature to get the accurate phase boundaries for the Mg-B system.

An initial point that I would like to make very emphatically?and as our title might erroneously suggest for those of you old enough to remember . . . Peter Harben and myself do not intend to shoot ourselves in the foot. We derive our livelihood from a number of aggregate, industrial and other minerals producers, both here in the United States and outside. This paper, therefore, is a fence-straddler or for information purposes (we hope) only, rather than any "fur or agin" stances. In essence, some of you may consider it a U.S.G.S. publication! In fact, we hope that it serves to inspire aggregates producers to do some radical thinking, to promote introspection, and to that end it would benefit both domestic and foreign producers. The title could be shortened into a brief question of "Aggregates Travel?" with an emphatic no for the answer. In the past, the success of a construction materials venture depended upon your ability, through siting, to provide the customer f.o.b. the job site, a product at the lowest possible cost.

Freeport-McMoRan Inc. operates an ISASMELTTM furnace for the smelting of copper concentrate at the Miami Smelter in Claypool, Arizona. In May 2017, the furnace was restarted after incorporating newly designed copper cooling elements from just above the tap hole to the underside of the roof. The objective of the improved cooling design was to extend campaign life by eliminating existing failure mechanisms with the wall refractory. In addition to upgraded bathline coolers and complete coverage of the gas offtake transition, or ‘kettle’, with plate coolers, a novel arrangement of coolers was installed in the remaining freeboard area. The shell required significant cutting and re-stiffening, as well as extensive modification of the cooling water piping. Based on performance observed to date, it is expected that smelter throughput will be increased due to extended ISASMELTTM refractory campaign life.

The quality of mineral additives used 1n a drilling fluid (mud) can dramatically affect the fluid&apos;s properties and the overall cost of drilling an oil or gas well. The principally used minerals are bentonite, barite, barite/hematite blends and hematite alone. The high specific gravity minerals, barite and hematite, are used to increase drilling fluid density. Bentonite clay is used to increase drilling fluid viscosity, gel strength and to provide a low permeability filter cake. A multi-million dollar investment in a well and the safety of the personnel on the drilling rig can depend on how effectively these mud additives perform with other constituents in the mud. This paper points out effects caused by small amounts of certain carbonate and sulfide mineral impurities in barite or hematite and how polymeric extender additives in bentonites contribute to unpredictable behavior of a mud. Effects like these are the reason why oil companies who use these materials sometimes set their own quality standards beyond those already specified in API Spec. 13A. Also discussed in this paper are the current standardization activities in API Committee 13 on these minerals.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the technical feasibility of smelting copper concentrates containing chalcocite (Cu2S) and native copper using nonpyritic sulfur-bearing materials to aid matte formation. The procedure consisted of combining various proportions of commercial chalcocite concentrate, smelter slag, fluxes, and matte-forming constituents to produce charges of comparable compositions. The mixtures were charged in fire-clay crucibles and smelted in an induction furnace at 1,300° C. The research proved that either sulfur or gypsum can replace pyrite as a matte-forming material, and that gypsum produces an exceptionally high-grade copper matte. The addition of small quantities of metallic iron to the nonpyritic smelting charge furthers the removal of sulfur, improves the recovery of copper, and makes it possible to utilize gypsum as the exclusive flux and matte-forming ingredient, thereby eliminating the necessity of adding limestone.

The oil industry had its inception in the United States in 1859 when the first oil well was drilled by Col. Drake at Titusville, Pennsylvania. From, a production of 2000 barrels for that year there was a slow but steady increase, with some fluctuations, up to 1901 for which year the output was approximately 69,389,194 barrels. Since that time the production has increased with leaps and bounds due to the rapid rise of the automotive industry, the widening use of oil as a fuel under boilers and the development of the. Diesel engine. The production for 1921 is estimated to have been 469,639,000 barrels. During the same year more than 125 millions of barrels were imported from Mexico. The oil industry, including the production, transportation, refining and distribution of petroleum and its products, is now the third largest in the country. Present Condition of the Industry During and immediately after the war the demand for petroleum exceeded the domestic production plus the imports from Mexico with the result that our storage oil was heavily drawn upon. Prices for crude exceeded all previous levels in the history of the industry. Pennsylvania crude sold for $6.10 per barrel and Mid-Continent crude for $3.50. Such prices stimulated wildcatting greatly with the result that several important new oil pools were discovered. Then as production increased the depression came which caused a large falling off in consumption. Pennsylvania crude fell to $2.25 per barrel and Mid-Continent to $1.00. Large oil companies such as the Standard, Sinclair and Empire took advantage of the situation, erected additional storage tanks and bought up millions of barrels to hold until better prices returned. Prices have already improved owing to a better market, but the domestic production coupled with the Mexican importations is still in excess of the demand with the result that the surplus is being stored. At the close of the year 1921, the U. S. Geological Survey estimates that there were 183,890,000 barrels of crude in storage in this country, the largest stocks in the history of the industry, yet an amount sufficient to supply the country for only 119 days at the present rate of consumption. Price reductions are again anticipated in some quarters but in view of the probable falling off in the Mexican output in the near, future due to the rapid rate of exhaustion of several of the most important pools and in view of the expected increase in consumption of gasoline and kerosene during the spring and summer months it is more likely that the present price level will be maintained. Present Sources of Domestic Supply Seven major oil fields are recognized by the U. S. Geological Survey in the United States. These are the Appalachian, Lima-Indiana, Illinois, Mid-Continent, Gulf Coast, Rocky Mountain and California. Fan performance graphs are generated by digital computer using two programs, RUN- FANS and FANPLOT. RUNFANS calculates fan performance data from stored specific-volume, specific-speed data for a given fan type with appropriate allowances for fan diameter, rotational speed and air density. FANPLOT accepts specifications for drawing the graph and accepts either user-supplied pressure-quantity data or RUNFANS- calculated data as input, Operational procedures for both programs are detailed and examples of their interactive query routines are included. The phosphate mining industry is a highly competitive one, one in which survival depends on the plant&apos;s ability to produce at costs equal to, or below, the competition. The solution toward getting costs down is usually one of scaling up the plants to get the most tons through at the lowest possible cost. Control of these plants has been an art. Few of them are well instrumented because until a few years ago reliable instrumentation was non-existent. International Minerals and Chemical Corporation was a pioneer in applying computer techniques to ore reserves analysis and mine planning and the success in these areas led to the question of whether we could not extend the advantages of computer processing into the plant itself. There was a great deal of doubt on the operator&apos;s end that this could be done successfully because of the lack of instrumentation and the fact that plant control was largely an art that was learned only after many years of experience. However, in 1965 the instrumentation picture began to look up and the new generation of process computers just coming on the market were considerably lower in cost than the previous ones. A preliminary study of the installation costs and the probable benefits that could be realized from computer control convinced us that a process control computer should be seriously considered for a new phosphate mining plant which was being designed.

This report presents a description of the Prototype Demonstration Vehicle and Safety Guidelines developed under U.S. Bureau of Mines Contract No. JO 366003, ?Improving Man Transit Safety. This vehicle was constructed to assess the feasibility of a set of equipment related guidelines which were drafted in Phase I of the same contract. State-of-the-Art improvements are embodied in such areas as collision survivability, occupant comfort, and multiple mode (on and off rail) operation. The electric battery powered vehicle carries a twelve man section crew at speeds up to 12 mph. The description of the demonstration vehicle Is presented In Volume I. Safety Guidelines are presented in Volume II.
