Introduction A shaft sinking operation carried out at the Viking Yellowknife mine in the spring of 1947 presents certain features, especially as regards speed of sinking and low cost, that may be of interest to Institute members, and especially to those who are not familiar with conditions and costs in the Northwest Territories. After collaring, the inclined, two-compartment shaft was sunk 130 feet by four miners in twenty-eight days at a direct cost of only $53.19 per foot. All things considered, this is a remarkable performance, even if it does not actually establish a record. The property is at Morris lake, some forty-five miles north of Yellowknife. Formerly owned by Athona Mines (1937), Limited, it was acquired by the then newly incorporated Viking Yellowknife Gold Mines, Limited, in 1947. Surface work and diamond drilling in 1946 disclosed a number of veins and masses of quartz in a sill of diorite which lies conformably within sedimentary rocks. The sill strikes N.30°E. and dips at 70° to 85° southeast, and has a mean width of 40 feet over its explored length of 3,000 feet . Both the quartz and the diorite carry gold and are mineralized with pyrrhotite and lesser amounts of galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and arsenopyrite. Of thirty-five holes drilled in the mineralized zone, the core from twenty showed visible gold. Sampling of drill cores indicated several ore shoots in the north and central parts of the sill. Assays, however, were somewhat erratic, possibly due to the fairly widespread presence of visible gold, and it was decided that the deposit could best be explored by underground sampling. Accordingly, late in 1946, plans were laid for the sinking of a shaft.

ELECTROLYTIC zinc plants of the American Smelting and Refining Co. are located adjacent to the present city limits of Corpus Christi, Texas. The original plant commenced operations during 1942, and is designed for the production of special high grade zinc from zinc sulfide concentrates.' Subsequent changes include the erection of an additional acid plant during 1950, and additions for increased generating and production capacity during 1951. New Electrolytic Plant—The new electrolytic plant is a separate unit erected for the treatment of densified fume produced at Asarco plants located in El Paso, Texas and Chihuahua, Mexico. Construction was completed and operation commenced during June, 1953. Decision for the erection of a separate plant for the treatment of densified fume is based on several factors. One of the principal reasons is the assurance of continued production rate of the original plant, which might have been jeopardized by combined treatment of calcine and fume. Of equal importance is the advantage of locating a plant on a site with adequate space for eventual expansion. General Description—The new plant for the treatment of densified fume consists of four main buildings for the following operations: storage and grinding of fume, leaching and purification, electrolyzing and casting, and rectifier units. Auxiliary buildings include a baghouse, reagent storage, and a lunch room. Leaching of ground fume with electrolyte from the cells is a batch type operation in tanks equipped with mechanical agitators and weightometers. Completed leaches are pressure filtered, the resultant residue being recovered for shipment to El Paso by conventional use of thickeners, drum type vacuum filters, and a direct-fired dryer. Filtrates from the filter section are purified in mechanically agitated tanks, filtered after completion through plate and frame presses, and then pumped to an evaporative type cooling tower. Solution discharged from the basin of the cooling tower is collected in storage tanks for use in the cells. The cool purified solutions are pumped as required from storage to the solution circuit for circulation of electrolyte through the cells. Except for the addition of purified feed solution and withdrawal of electrolyte for leaching, the circulating system for the cells is essentially a closed continuous circuit that includes the use of evaporative cooling towers for control of solution temperatures. Aluminum cathodes and Ag-Pb anodes are used for electrolysis, which is maintained at a current density of about 82 amp per sq ft. Cathode zinc produced is melted in a gas-fired reverberatory furnace and then cast into slabs on a straight line casting machine. Unloading and Storage—Fume produced by the Chihuahua plant is shipped in box cars, and fume by the El Paso plant in hopper bottom dump cars. Shipments as received are weighed on a 7 5-ton capacity railroad scale, sampled, and then moved over one of the two unloading hoppers with a car puller. The cars are then unloaded with mechanized equipment, a car scoop being used for unloading of box cars and a car shaker for the hopper bottom cars

The high sulfidation Purnama Au-Ag deposit located on the Indonesian island of Sumatra entered production in mid-2012 following a two-year program of construction and development. Discovered in 1997 following a regional stream sediment geochemical sampling program by the Normandy Anglo Asia joint venture, it is the first and largest deposit in G-Resource’s Martabe Project to enter production and is the centrepiece of a series of six deposits totalling 8.1 Moz Au and 73.8 Moz Ag in Mineral Resources (G-Resources, 2013a).In 2011 investigation into the controls of high-grade mineralisation in isolated parts of the deposit identified a potentially significant mineralisation style which had not been previously recognised or accommodated in the resource model. An extensive investigation of core and logging data followed to confirm the distribution of the somewhat unusual mineralisation style – a sedimentary-like cavity infill of very high-grade auriferous pyrite within the steep hydrothermal breccia feeders to the system. With the bulk of mineralisation located within the adjacent volcanic sequence and sandy-matrix phreatomagmatic breccia surrounding the feeders, the lack of constraint for high-grade intersections in the hydrothermal breccia zones had potential to significantly impact the mine plan in the lower sections of the planned pit through overestimation of local gold grade. Combined with new data emerging from grade control drilling and infill resource drilling in the pit, a program of reinterpretation of the deposit was initiated to update the geological and alteration framework underpinning the resource model. "The Logtung deposit discovered in 1976, is an example of large tonnage (162 million tonnes), low grade (0.13% WO3 and 0.052% MoS;) W(scheelite)-Mo mineralization related to multiple felsic intrusions. Because mineralization is predominantly fracture-controlled (> 95 %) rather than disseminated, Log tung is not a skarn deposit. Metamorphism of the Logtung country rocks (interbedded calcareous shale and graphitic quartizite) to a series of competent reaction skarns (quartz-diopside-garnet calc-silicate, biotite quartzite and wollastonite-vesuvianite calc-silicate) clearly precedes W-Mo mineralization. Hence mineralization was related to permeability created by hydraulic fracturing and not replacement processes.Logtung shows a theme of several phases of mineralization (4) related to multiple intrusions (>2) which is similar to that of the Climax and Urad-Henderson Mo systems. The earliest quartzmolybdoscheelite vein system, which consists of a typical ""porphyrystyle"" crackle-breccia of thin (0.5 mm to 4 mm) quartz-garnetdiopside- molybdoscheelite veins, is related to a high Si02 (approx. 76%), seriate-porphyritic monzogranite stock (approx. 2 km by 0.5 to 1 km) of Cretaceous age (118 ±2 Ma [2u]; Stewart, 1983). Later quartz-pyrite scheelite (fluorite-KINa-feldspars-molybdenite) veins, with prominent green, hornblende-bearing alteration selvages, and quartz-molybdenite (-pyrite-jluorite-scheelite) veins are related to a quartz-feldspar-spessartine-rich garnet porphyritic felsic dike complex approximately 500 m across. Both intrusive phases have anomalously high Wand Mo concentrations of about 100 ppm and 50 ppm respectively, which Stewart (1983) attributes to a primary enrichment. The final stage of mineralization consists of a prominent 4.5 km by 1 km zone of 1 em to 1 m wide polymetallic sheeted veins centred on the felsic dike complex. The system is zoned from quartz scheelite-molybdenite-pyrite-blue-green beryl-jluoritebismuthinite veins in the core to Pb-Zn-Ag veins with abundant arsenopyrite and minor Sn (approx. 0.1%) in the northeast. The focus of recurrent intrusive and hydrothermal activity was located above a flank or nose of the monzogranite stock.The distribution of WO3 and MoS2 grades within the approximately 750 m (across) by 300m (evaluation depth) mineralized zone is a result of the variable superimposition of the four separate vein systems each with different W:Mo ratios. Well-defined Wand Mo ore, shells such as those at Climax, Henderson and Mt. Emmons did not develop at Logtung. The upper surface of the mineralized zone, as shown by the 0.03% MoS2 contour defines an elongate dome with an apical region approximately coincident with the felsic dike complex. Hydrothermal alteration occurs as well-defined vein selvages, and not as pervasive zones.The Logtung deposit shows many similarities to porphyry Mo deposits in the western Cordillera and may be identified as a porphyry W(scheelite)-Mo deposit, with a W:·Mo ratio of 3.3:1. The principal reasons are: (1) mineralization is spatially associated with porphyritic granitic intrusions and (2) much of the scheelite and molybdenite occurs in typical ""porphyry-style"" vein stockworks"

Oxidative dissolution of pyrrhotite and pyrite is largely responsible for the sulfate-rich waters of the vadose zone in the Waite Amulet tailings. Although the shallowest of the sulfate-rich waters are of the Fe-SO4 type, they change to Mg-SO4-type, near-neutral waters within 1-2 m of the tailings surface. Phyllosilicates and amphiboles are the only minerals present in sufficient quantity to ameliorate the amount of acidity produced. X-ray diffraction and microscopic studies of bulk sample indicate that quartz, chlorite, talc, amphiboles, magnetite, albite, and micas are the major and minor non-sulfide minerals, but their variations with depth do not give clear indications of depletion in the vadose zone. Mineralogical and bulk chemical compositions of the tailings confirm that Fe2O 3 has accumulated in large quantity in the vadose zone, with the Fe having been derived from Fe sulfides. When the effect of Fe2O3 is accounted for, the bulk compositions suggest that SiO2 is slightly more abundant in the vadose zone than in the saturated zone. This may be the result of residual enrichment of siliceous minerals such as quartz and albite in the vadose zone. Weathering of the tailings since the cessation of deposition in 1962 has resulted in a well-defined zone of sulfide depletion and secondary sulfate-mineral development. Although some silicate dissolution is indicated by pore-water compositions, the role of silicates in providing neutralization seems to have been minimal. The contribution by silicate minerals in laboratory tests of neutralization potential may be excessive relative to that in natural settings.

ABSTRACT The sensitivity of sulphide minerals towards oxidation depends on the mineralogical makeup and nature of sulphide ores. This paper focuses on chalcopyrite behaviour in a nickel-copper sulphide- ore matrix that was aged in the mine-site stockpiles. Results of collectorless, collector-induced flotation and recovery by size are presented following a discussion of XPS analysis that was used to gain insight into oxidative alteration of chalcopyrite’s surface chemistry. Chalcopyrite maintains its high flotation activity despite exposure to weeks of oxidative conditions. It is concluded that chalcopyrite is quite tolerant to stockpile oxidation due to various factors related to alteration of its surface chemistry.

Metallurgical coal is an essential component for the blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace (BF-BOF) steelmaking process, which accounts for roughly 70% of total global steel production. To meet the growing demand for metallurgical coal, Arch Resources identified the potential to recover low- ash coal from ultra-fines discarded prior to the deslime flotation circuit across their portfolio of operations. Historically, many flotation circuits were designed to discard this ultra-fine coal due to high clay content and technological barriers to cost-effectively upgrade and dewater the coal to a saleable product. Recent advancements in high-intensity flotation technology, including the Eriez StackCell, have enabled coal producers to recover ultra-fine coal while minimizing capital and operating costs. In July 2023, Arch Resources commissioned the first full-scale ultra-fines recovery circuit utilizing StackCell high-intensity flotation technology at the Leer Mining Complex. This paper reviews the approach utilized to develop the flotation process design, learnings from the commissioning and ramp-up period, and performance data through the first year of operation.

"Observation of the use of trailing cables in ""mines shows that the chief limiting factor in the life of the cables and their safe use is the smashing or crushing of the cables in service, together with the effects of consequent splicing.Trailing cables are crushed when run over by cars, mining machines; and locomotives or when hit by falls of roof. Crushing damages the insulation and may cause failure at once or in later use. Failure may be either by short circuit between the conductors or by grounding to the track. The failure of a live cable causes electric arcs capable of igniting explosive mixtures of methane and air. Every cable failure in a gassy or dusty mine is, therefore, a real or potential hazard.Some mine operators do not allow the splicing of trailing cables for use in gassy mines, bet require that a damaged cable be immediately replaced and if repaired that it be used only in nongassy mines. Other operators allow the making of temporary splices to permit completion of the shift but require that such splices be remade and vulcanized before the cable is used again.Still other operators allow the continued use of temporary splices, which in general means that a cable is used until the splices give trouble in reeling, or overheat, or pull apart. Then the spliced sections are either cut out or the whole cable is replaced.Splices often determine the useful life of a cable. A splice poorly made may pull apart ueder mechanical strain and cause arcing that burn* the surrounding cable or ignites as or coal-dust. If it has lower conductivity a splice is the first part of the cable to heat; it may become so hot under load that it will burn apart and damage other parts of the cable, or, if it be a soldered splice, the solder may melt and allow parting of the cable. A poorly made splice often has insufficient insulation which may alloy short-circuiting between conductors or permit external contacts capable of giving an electric shock to one handling the cable. The splice is sometimes bulky from too much insulation and takes up too much room on the reel, causing uneven reeling; also by catching on the spooling device the oversized splice may receive expressive pulls and wear. Splicing is therefore a very important factor in the use of trailing cables."

Automated scanning electron microscopy has been widely used in recent years for gold and other precious metals characterization. However, application of this technology is resource intensive and in most instances needs specialized technical personnel to process the samples and information. Newmont Metallurgical Services (NMS) has recently acquired an ASPEX SEM. The ASPEX SEM offers some significant benefits/improvements in sample preparation and sample processing time. NMS and ASPEX have been working together to develop an approach utilizing this technology for the minerals processing industry and specifically for gold characterization.

Underground stone mine ventilation is characterized by large openings with low resistances. These mines primarily face three challenges: moving adequate volumes of air, controlling and directing the airflow, and planning ventilation systems that work well with production requirements. Given these challenges, this paper examines the data collected by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to determine the extent to which respirable crystalline silica (RCS) and diesel particulate matter (DPM) are an issue in underground stone mines. Out of 522 sampled mines, there were 108 personal samples exceeding the RCS Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) during 2000–2020. DPM were more prevalent than RCS in these mines with 382 personal samples exceeding the DPM PEL out of the 929 mines sampled during 2002–2020. Dilution of DPM is usually the defining parameter for design of mine ventilation systems in largeopening underground stone mines. With this knowledge, focused attention can be directed to these mines so that appropriate prevention and mitigation techniques can be utilized to prevent stone miners’ exposure to RCS and DPM and subsequent respiratory diseases.

The Appalachian region of Canada comprises the three maritime provinces; Nova Scotia; New Brunswick; and Prince Edward Island; and that; part of the Province of Quebec lying south and east of Logan's fault. This; major thrust runs in a gently curving line from lake Champlain to Quebec; city and thence down the valley of the St. Lawrence to pass between Anticosti; island and Gaspe peninsula. To the northwest lies the St. Lawrence; Lowland division of the Interior Plains geological province; a region underlain; largely by early Palxozoic strata; which for the most part lie horizontal; or with low dips; where faults occur they are predominantly of the normal; type; and only locally are the beds cut by intrusive rocks. To the southeast; on the other side of the fault zone; an entirely different set of conditions is; encountered. There; Lower Devonian and older strata stand at high angles; are sheared and thrust faulted; and are intruded in many places by granitic; igneous bodies. The present paper is designed to outline briefly the geological; and structural history of this geological province and to emphasize; the part that structural conditions have played in connection with mineral; deposition.

The nature of the density distribution in a gas-solid phase fluidized bed for dry coal separation is an important factor in influencing the performance. However, during coal processing, fine slime would mix with dense medium of magnetite powder and accumulate in the bed, and its influence will affect the density of the bed. The mathematical model of the density distribution with fine slime behaviour was studied in an experimental laboratory system. The functional relationship between the density of the air dense medium fluidized bed and the coal slime content were fitted, applying the principle of least-squares method with damping factors. With the model, by analysing the trial testing data, the mechanism of the density distribution of the bed was studied and applied to a coal separation test with a pilot scale separator. "Available literature on the effect of re-entrainment on overall airborne dust concentration in mine airways or the fundamental mechanisms of coal dust re-entrainment in mine atmosphere is scant (Shankar and Ramani, 1991 ). Therefore, as part of the Respirable Dust Center's ongoing research, the following three-part study was undertaken:• a study of the re-entrainment phenomena of anthracite and bituminous coal dust particles in a wind tunnel under the influence of varying air velocities;• a study of the same in the Lake Lynn Laboratory Mine of the USBM with both air flow and walking by personnel causing re-entrainment; and• the mathematical modeling and computer simulation of the re-entrainment phenomenon.In this paper, results from the re-entrainment studies in the wind tunnel and the Lake Lynn Laboratory mine are presented. Comparing the results from the two studies,it was observed that increasing the air velocity increased the rate of re-entrainment ( Shankar and Ramani, I 994a) and the rate of re-entrainment decreased with the time of exposure of the source dust to the flowing air. In addition, when the source dust was composed of particles of different sizes, the airborne dust concentrations due to re-entrainment were higher than when the source dust was composed of particles of the same size. The contribution of airborne dust concentration due to air flow was negligible compared to the contribution due to walking. IntroductionIn underground coal mines, dust is produced primarily during the process of mining and during such activities as pillar spall, loading, belt transfer and roof fall. The generated dust is entrained and then collects on surfaces through dispersion, diffusion and eventual deposition. Removal forces, such as flowing ventilation air or turbulence caused by walking and moving vehicles, can re-entrain the deposited dust (Hall, 1955). A portion of the re-entrained dust remains airborne and increases the concentration of airborne dust in mine airways.The presence of airborne coal dust in mine airways in large concentrations can be hazardous. Health effects include coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) and silicosis, and it can be a nuisance affecting visibility. In addition, as is common during methane explosions, if the concentration of airborne coal dust becomes significant, there could be a coal-dust explosion (Singer, Cook and Grumer, 1972; Singer, Harris and Grumer, 1974; Edwards and Ford, 1988). Through concerned research efforts over the last decade, significantprogress has been made in reducing the airborne dust concentration in mine atmospheres. However, secondary sources, such as re-entrainment, have not been studied in-depth. It is important to understand the phenomenon of re-entrainment and its potential contribution to the airborne dust concentration in mine airways for further decreasing airborne dust hazards in mines."

This paper describes a series of mechanical flotation cell results run with various chemical reagent schemes designed to economically improve the flotation performance associated with selected industrially available coals. The emphasis is on the identification of practical flotation methods of processing coals containing unusually coarse and/or fine feed sizes, of increasing the recovery of oxidized and/or difficult to float coal, and of increasing the selectivity of coal over pyrite in high sulfur coals.

"The continued increase of the automobile production leads to a higher platinum, palladium and rhodium (PGM) demand. Due to the high value of the PGMs the recycle of these metals from automotive catalysts is of special interest. Pyrometallurgical processes, which are only focused on the PGMs, represent the state of the art of automotive catalysts recovery. However, hydrometallurgical recycling processes offer additional recovery of other valuable metals and compounds. The method presented in this paper is based on a combination of hydrochloric acid and hydrogen peroxide to dissolve the valuable metal fraction which can be precipitated afterwards.INTRODUCTIONPlatinum and the corresponding metals from the PGM group, especially palladium and rhodium are well known as catalytic active materials. They support chemical reactions which are inhibited. This effect is used to decrease the amount of harmful compounds like hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide or nitrogen oxides in automotive exhaust gases. The generation of these toxic substances is based on incomplete combustion, which in turn is caused by non-ideal conditions in the combustion chamber. Catalytic converters minimize the harmful compounds by supporting the following Reactions 1 – 3 (Votsmeier et al., 2009).CO + ½ O2 ? CO2 (1)CnHm + (n + ¼ m) O2 ? n CO2 + ½ m H2O (2)2 NO + 2 CO ? N2 + 2 CO2 (3)Platinum and palladium are very effective for the oxidation (Reactions 1 and 2), while rhodium supports the decomposition of nitrogen oxides by carbon monoxide (Votsmeier et al., 2009). The classical three way catalyst was a platinum – rhodium combination with a Pt:Rh ratio of 5:1 (Hagelüken et al., 2005). Today the platinum, palladium and rhodium ratio is highly variable and strongly depends on the engine type as well as on the car producer. Diesel engines are operated with a super stoichiometric air addition in comparison to spark ignition systems. Therefore the exhaust gas composition and off gas temperature is different. Based on the high oxygen amount, diesel engines produce less carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons but more nitrogen oxide in contrast to gasoline engines. This leads to various requirements for the catalytic converters."

Company-community agreements are widely considered to be a practical mechanism for recognising the rights, needs and priorities of peoples impacted by mining, for managing impacts and ensuring that miningderived benefits are shared. The use and application of company?community agreements is increasing globally. Notwithstanding the utility of agreements, the gender dimensions of agreement processes in mining have rarely been studied. Prior research on women and mining, however, does show that women are often more adversely impacted by mining than men, and face greater challenges in accessing development opportunities that mining can bring, however there is currently little to no guidance for companies, government or communities in terms of bringing a gender perspective to the fore in mining and agreement processes. While it is undisputed in human development literature that investment in women and sensitivity to gender delivers long-term health, education and local development outcomes, a number of key factors remain unexplored in debates about mining and development. These include: women?s participation in agreement processes, the gendered distribution of agreement benefits, and the extent to which impacts and benefits influence (either positively or negatively) women?s development and economic inclusion. This paper presents the results of an applied research project undertaken by the Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining (CSRM) at The University of Queensland and funded by a partnership between the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) and the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID). The project sought to connect with practitioners who had been directly involved in agreement processes to hear grounded perspectives on the interaction of gender dynamics and agreements, and connect those experiences with the broader literature. Findings from this study have implications for the role of companies and governments in promoting gender equality and empowerment as part of their commitments to sustainable development. A key challenge for companies will be navigating the territory of cultural norms and gender equality. The authors argue that without consideration of the gender perspective, and appropriate responses, mining agreements may not be inclusive or representative and may exacerbate gender inequalities and fail to contribute to long-term sustainable development.

The first public garage in the city of Dubrovnik has been built in highly urbanized area, on location Ilina Glavica. The excavation of the building pit has been done partly by construction machinery, i.e. by hydraulic hammer for excavations and partly by drilling and blasting. In the vicinity of the building pit there are houses, buildings and two schools. Drilling operations and blasting have been performed during the working hours while regular school classes have been held and activities in other buildings took place. The nearest structures are some 5 to 10 meters (16.4 to 32.8 ft) away from the building pit, which makes it even more difficult to perform blasting operations in the urban environment. For the purpose of determining safe and permissible oscillation velocity limits, i.e. the proportion of seismic effects of blasting, a trial blasting has been conducted. The permissible mass of explosive charge has been determined by original method respecting the requirements of existing standards (ISO 4866, DIN 4150, US BM 8507), which determine the permissible oscillation velocities in relation to their frequencies. According to measuring results of the oscillation velocity during the test blasting the design parameters of blasting field have been corrected and zones have been established within the excavation area considering the possible effect of blasting to the building pit environment. Further blasting operations have been performed in stages, in smaller blasting fields with deck charge within a blast hole while respecting the requirements of the transport possibilities for the blasted rock mass within the building pit and performance of control measurements of oscillation velocity for each blasting. Through application of all the protection measures, design solutions and systematic control of performance of activities the complete excavation by blasting has been completed without any damage on neighboring structures/buildings. This article presents these solutions and methods for reduction of seismic impact of blasting to the environment.

The dedicated documenting of blast design and vibration monitoring results forms part of the best practice methodology for today’s blasting operators. This allows regression curves to be constantly updated and in turn compatible charge weight determinations are based upon the most current data. The point can arise however when so much data becomes agglomerated that variations in blast design, geology or monitoring location response and their effects can pass unobserved and start to have an adverse effect on the forecasting capability of the regression due to a deterioration of the standard error statistic. The simple solution would be to only compile like-for-like blasting returns, but this prospect can quickly become unworkable due to the number of potential variables. In addition it is very difficult to spot subtle variations by simply examining a standard scaled-distance curve mainly due to the intrinsic data scatter that is always present together with the logarithmic nature of the regression curve. If indeed a variation is thought to be apparent, how can the degree and magnitude of its influence to be quantified? The Likelihood Ratio Test when applied to regression data can diagnose subtle variations between data sub-sets and provides a comparative statistic as to the degree of variation. By analysing datasets in such a way, levels of compatibility are obtained, indicating which sets can be combined in order to increase prediction capability.

The extraction and recovery of nitrate from waste solutions generated in the production of titanium were investigated using solvent extraction techniques. Laboratory studies and continuous tests in a small solvent-extraction system showed that up to 98 percent of the nitrate can be selectively extracted by a solution of tributyl phosphate in kerosine. The extracted nitrate can be recovered as nitric acid, at concentrations suitable for reuse, by stripping the loaded organic with water.
