In recent years several mine researchers have studied the optimization of cutoff grade with the purpose of maximizing Net Present Value (NPV). The best and most popular one is the Lane algorithm. Based upon the Lane algorithm it is possible to calculate the optimum cutoff grade for mine, mill, and refinery capacities for single metal deposits with variable grades. The Lane algorithm cannot be used in multiple metal deposits. The reason is that, while in single metal deposits six points are possible candidates for the optimum cutoff grade, in multiple metal deposits an infinite number points are possible candidates for the optimum cutoff grades and objective function evaluation of these infinite points is impossible. In this study the Golden Section search method was used to calculate optimum cutoff grades of multiple metal deposits for the same conditions as Lane assumed in single metal deposits. Based on this method, grade-tonnage distribution uncertainty space of problem is guessed. In the next step, by selecting test points in uncertainty space and evaluating the objective function at these points, a part of uncertainty space will be eliminated. The procedure is then repeated until the uncertainty space has been sufficiently reduced to ensure that the optimum cutoff grades have been located to the required accuracy. Froth flotation is well-established and efficient in the selective separation of valuable particles from unwanted material with sizes ranging from 10 μm to 200 μm. However, when it comes to the separation of ultrafine particles (< 10 μm) there are still some challenges, or rather opportunities. This research aims at developing a method for the separation of ultrafine particles based on multiple particle properties. Amongst such properties are wettability, morphology (shape or roughness) and size with applications not only in mineral processing but in general chemical engineering. In this study, three differently shaped fractions are used as valuables for testing: spherical particles, elongated particles and irregularly shaped particle fragments; together with ultrafine magnetite as the gangue material, in order to investigate the effect of particle morphology on ultrafine particle flotation, as well as wettability, which is varied by esterification using alcohols. Flotation tests are carried out using a novel flotation device that was designed especially for the flotation of ultrafine particles, combining advantages from machine-type froth flotation and column flotation. The results showed that, in contrast to previous studies, recoveries for ultrafine spheres were higher than for ultrafine fragments for all wettability conditions, and hydrophobisation generally increased particle recoveries for said morphologies. Tests using fibres showed different behaviour as hydrophobisation had negative effects on their recovery, despite increased selectivities and kinetics. These findings suggest that apart from influences of particle properties within the suspension zone, their effects on the froth characteristics should be studied in more depth. This paper presents the analytical results obtained from numerical simulation of reinforced concrete slabs strengthened with various FRP systems and subjected to blast loading. A three-dimensional finite element model using AUTODYN software was used to predict the overall behavior of the slabs. The numerical results were validated by comparing with experimental results from a program carried out to investigate the efficiency of different strengthening systems on the blast resistance improvement of small-scale reinforced concrete (RC) slabs. The experimental program consisted of testing nine RC slabs strengthened with three different externally bonded (EB) FRP systems attached at the bottom side of the slabs and one RC slab tested without strengthening for comparison purposes. The EB FRP strengthening systems investigated included two layers of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) sheets, two layers of Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) sheets, and one layer of Glass-Fiber Resin Polymer (GRP) sheet. Different epoxy resin, patching mortars and impregnating epoxy adhesives were used for the slab surface preparation and FRP system application of the strengthening layers. The aim was to evaluate the residual strength of the test specimens after exposure to blast loads. The blast loading parameters were evaluated for each test using AUTODYN simulation and compared with the computer program CONWEP. All specimens were subjected to same spherical TNT charge weight and stand-off distance with the respect to the slab top surface. Extensive comparison is made between the experimental results and the AUTODYN simulations for the control unstrengthened slab and the strengthened slabs including time history records of the bottom steel strain and mid-span acceleration and the peak dynamic deflection of the slabs.

The use of sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) in most of the operations in byproduct molybdenum flotation comes with safety concerns and, in some instances, a high reagent cost. Engineered solutions at the various operations where NaHS is used have immensely reduced the possibility of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas evolution. However, the threat of exposure remains, and this, coupled with the high dosages of NaHS consumed, supports the continued search for alternative depressants. This paper focuses on efforts to study the applicability of disodium carboxymethyl trithiocarbonate (DCMT), an organic depressant, as an alternative to NaHS. Bench-scale rougher flotation results for samples from the Sierrita copper–molybdenum (Cu–Mo) plant showed the best DCMT performance at 8 kg/t of DCMT, pH 10.5, 30 min of shear conditioning and 10 min of flotation conditioning. The Aminpro plant model simulation confirmed that 4 to 8 kg/t DCMT under certain shearing and conditioning times achieved superior or equivalent Mo–Cu separation efficiencies when compared\ to NaHS.

"Predicting how coal seams will be beneficiated through the coal handling processing plant (CHPP) has long been challenging within BHP Coal. Various coal seams from different areas are mined and stockpiled separately, often depending upon a deleterious coal quality parameter; high/low trace elements for example. These stockpiles are then fed in different ratios into the CHPP to produce the desired product/s. In understanding the washability characteristics of the feed source, mine geologists and process engineers work together to improve the beneficiation of different coal materials through the CHPP.For the majority of the BHP Coal deposits, the washability data is available for the coal seams across the deposits. However, no previous standardised modelling and prediction technique existed that could ensure the correct information was available for forecasting and refining CHPP processes. This paper will discuss the steps undertaken to implement a geometallurgical prediction tool that simplified and streamlined the washability modelling and yield estimation process. The value realised to the BHP Coal assets resulting from this process was: improved compliance to plan increased throughput increased CHPP recovery through improved efficiencies and increased revenues.CITATION:Handley, P J, 2017. The Bureau of Mines investigated selective extraction of Au and Ag from a low-grade Au ore containing Hg. Gold and silver were extracted from the ore in cyanide slurries, and Hg extraction was suppressed with sodium or calcium sulfide. Maximum Au extraction and minimum Hg extraction were obtained using solutions containing 0.34 lb NaCN/ton of solution. Increasing the cyanide concentration increased Hg extraction without increasing Au extraction. Mercury extraction from the ore was suppressed with 0-5 to 2.9 Pb CaS/lb Kg in the ore. Gold-to-mercury ratios of 100:1 to 400:1 were obtained in the leach solution, and on the activated carbon in a CIP circuit.

This report summarizes the results of laboratory investigations by the Alaska Mining Experiment Station, Juneau, to determine the practicability of treating cinnabar-stibnite ore by bulk flotation and controlled-atmosphere roasting of the concentrate. Ore from the Red Devil mine near Sleetmute, Alaska, was selected for testing; it is typical of ores widely distributed throughout the Kuskokwim River Basin. The material, consisting of stibnite and cinnabar in ankerite, dolomite, and quartz, assayed 1.55 percent Hg and 2.87 percent Sb. Continuous treatment of the ore in a laboratory flotation circuit recovered 95.7 percent of the mercury and 82.6 percent of the antimony in a concentrate that assayed 20.4 percent Hg and 34.6 percent Sb.

Using a Mark IV surface force apparatus, adsorption of dodecylamine hydrochloride on mica has been studied at pH 5.7 in the presence and absence of octanol. With amine alone, the repulsive forces between mica surfaces are reduced due to charge neutralization and attractive hydrophobic force; however, the latter is of relatively short-range with its decay length less than 2 nm. In the presence of amine and octanol, the hydrophobic force becomes more significant, its decay length being extended up to 6.5 nm. The increased hydrophobicity in the presence of octanol is attributed to the co-adsorption of the neutral surfactant with dodecylamine, which increases the packing density of hydrocarbons on the mica surface. The increased hydrophobicity due to co-adsorption is reflected in the improved floatability of silica when using octanol as an extender.

Specially designed X-ray machines are used extensively on diamond mines for the recovery of diamonds from ores. These machines are extremely expensive and, at present, there are no reliable methods of determining if the equipment is performing efficiently. The objective of this work was to manufacture translucent X-ray diamond simulants, which would emit varying but known luminescence signals when exposed to X-rays. These X-ray diamond simulants could then be used to determine the efficiency of diamond recovery operations.

This report describes hydrogenation of petroleum distillate fuels in bench scale equipment and the effects of hydrogenation on the storage stability and the composition of the fuels. Two distillate fuels were hydrogenated in laboratory equipment using a commercially available cobalt molybdate catalyst. Reactor temperatures were varied from 600° to 850° F and pressures from 100 to 600 psig. Product fuels were analyzed by ASTM, Bureau of Mines, mass, and infrared methods. Hydrogenation of a catalytically cracked fuel from Oklahoma crude oil significantly improved the storage stability, reducing insoluble gum formed during 9 months of storage at 110° F from 19.0 to 1.3 mg per 100 ml fuel, average. Conversion of the olefins to other hydrocarbon types varied with the temperature of hydrogenation--at 700° to 850° F the conversion was mainly to aromatics, at 650° F about 50:50 to saturates and aromatics, at 600° F principally to saturates. Processing a fuel composed of a mixture of virgin distillate and catalytically cracked stock, both from Illinois crude, at 700° F and 200 psig effected marked improvement in stability; the buildup of insoluble gum in storage was lowered from 18.3 to less than 1 mg per 100 ml fuel.

Several processes involving injection of sorbent and humidification water downstream of the air preheater in a coal-fired boiler unit, are being developed as low capital cost retrofit S02 control options. Extensive laboratory work, pilot plant programs and larger scale programs have developed performance data and design information. Many of these programs were supported by the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) as "proofs-of-concept" of three different processes proposed by Dravo, Bechtel and General Electric. Based on these project results, DOE formulated a comprehensive in-duct sorbent injection development program to fully commercialize the technology by 1992. Also, EPRI will conduct a 4 MWe pilot program to develop its HYPAS process. The Consol Coolside process is scheduled for utility demonstration in 1989 on a 104 MWe unit at the Ohio Edison Edgewater Station under partial sponsorship of the DOE Clean Coal Technology Program.

Manganese alloys are important raw materials for steelmaking. However, selective mining of high-grade manganese ore resources has resulted in a scarcity of these high-grade Mn ores (Mn: >42; Mn/Fe: >5). The present research work is carried out to explore a new smelting reduction process to produce high-Mn/Fe syntheticMn ore from low-grade ferruginous manganese ores. Representative samples of low-grade ores (Mn: 25–30%; Mn/Fe: ~1) were collected and smelting reduction studies were carried out using variable smelting power (20–30 kWh), carbon rate (10–20% of ore) and slag basicity (0.1–0.3) to produce high-MnO slag and manganese pig iron. Studies have shown that different-grade high-MnO slags (MnO: 38.57–58.24%; Mn/Fe: >15) and manganese pigs (Mn: 5.16–24%) can be produced at optimum process conditions. The high-MnO slag can be used as synthetic ore for the ferroalloy production process. The developed process is capable to effectively segregate the iron and manganese in the metal and slag, respectively. The optimum Mn and Fe separation (>95%) was achieved by smelting of 10 kg Mn ore batch in a 50-kVA electric arc furnace using 30 kWh smelting power and 0.16 kg of coke. The slag basicity was maintained at 0.3 and the optimum slag SiO2 was ~30%. The studies indicated that the upgrading of low-grade ferruginous manganese ores is a promising solution for achieving high-Mn/Fe-ratio synthetic ores for ferroalloy production. It can help the manganese alloy industry to overcome challenges associated with the scarcity of high-Mn/Fe-ratio Mn ores and efficient utilization of low-grade resources.

Abstract Earthborne vibrations from blasting and other sources, including rock bursts, can now be recorded effectively. The nature and magnitude of vibrations from various sources have been investigated and certain applications of the knowledge thus gained have been made. Vibrations from blasting have been measured on special equipment over a range from an electric blasting cap at a few feet, through the largest quarry shot in history to date ( 1,-362,985 lb.), to the first atomic bomb, in uew Mexico on July 16th, 1945. Laws relating amount of explosive to amount of vibration at different distances have been developed and tested. Special studies have been made of the effects of vibrations on buildings, particularly from the standpoint of possible structural damage. Recorded vibrations are used to study the effects of modern short-period delay shooting. It ?has been found that short-period delay firing is extremely effective in reducing vibrations under the right conditions, but with certain limitations. In quarry shooting, there appears to be a minimum number of holes below which vibrations are not appreciably reduced by short-period delay firing. In several instances this minimum has been near 7. Vibrations in the ground from rock bursts and the effects of mining in stresesd ground have been studied both underground and on the surface in a search for a rock burst warning system. Introduction Earthborne vibrations from blasting and other sources, including rock bursts, can now be recorded effectively. Analyses of blasting records have been yielding increasing funds of information of practical as well as theoretical interest. The nature and magnitude of the vibrations have been investigated with special reference to their effects on structures.

This paper aims to present the evolution of the mining method in the Prince Lyell orebody. Initial strategy and practical experience are detailed as are the reasons for and benefits of changes to the method since 1972 when underground mining began. This section of the paper starts with ten series and concludes with 40 series which was completed in 1989/90.In addition, to update the series of papers written by various authors over the past ten years on Mount Lyell, a review of the experience in the current 50 series lift of mining will be given. As well, the basic planning guidelines are discussed for 60 series - the final lift of the Prince Lyell orebody.

Powell Bend Mine, located in Bastrop County, Texas, is owned by the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA). The mine is operated under contract by the Powell Bend Mining Company (PBHC), an affiliate of Pittsburg and Midway Coal Mining Co., and produces 210,000 tons of 6500 BTU/LB lignite per year for LCRA&apos;s Fayette Power Project near La Grange, Texas. PBHC operates the surface strip mine one shift per day, five days per week with a total of nine employees; six operations/maintenance and three office/supervision. The mine&apos;s productivity in 1988 averaged 100.3 tons per manshift using an l8-cubic yard dragline to uncover the lignite. Delivered cost to LCRA, F.O.B. mine, is $6.11 per ton, which includes water control and final reclamation.

Iron ore, which is transported by rail from the iron ore mines at Sishen in the Northern Cape, to the Saldanha Iron Ore Terminal in the Western Cape, needs to be analysed while loading to be exported. Every shipment will be sampled and an average analysis of the ore will be produced which is required by the purchaser at the receiving port. On arrival at the iron ore terminal at Saldanha, the ore is tipped from the rail trucks onto conveyor belts to be either stockpiled or direct-loaded. The conveyor belts run under the sampling plant and the ore is sampled periodically by means of an automated cross-belt sampler. This is the first iron ore port sampling facility in which the automated sampler is situated above the conveyor belts and not adjacent to them. A portion of the primary sample taken off the belt is moved to the dedicated sampling laboratory situated behind the cross-belt sampler and over the conveyor belt lines. The sample is split in the laboratory, one split being used for moisture and particle size determination and the other part is dried and then analysed by means of X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRFS) on fusion beads for major and minor elements. Particular care is taken to obtain high quality data for penalty elements.This sampling plant is completely automated and from the primary cross-belt sampler to final analysis by XRFS no manual steps are involved. This has meant that some processes are used which are suitable for automation and are ISO compliant but not necessarily ISO-certificated. The ISO manuals were developed with manual laboratory processes in mind. Precautions are also taken to maintain the integrity and representativity of the samples. The Bureau of Mines has developed a mass spectrometer method for deter-mining the helium-3 content of high-purity helium. The work was performed to evaluate experimental methods for removing helium-3 from high-purity helium and to better determine the composition of pure helium used in research. This was accomplished by increasing the inlet sample pressure, ionizing current, and amplification of the current produced by the ions collected on a conventional mass spectrometer that had been modified. With these modifications, the helium-3 content was determined in the parts-per-million and parts-per-billion range in helium-4.

The strongest magnetic roll separator available on the market enhances certain industrial minerals purity to levels not reached previously. Exceptionally strong forces can also be utilized for processing relatively fine particles at feed rates several times greater than for prior art electromagnetic induced roll separators. Since the unique machine does not work with an air-gap, coarser particles than what has been considered practical can be separated at rates up to 20 tph per single machine unit and 40 tph for a double machine unit. Examples for all these three application areas will be given. While the roll separator can be used only for dry processing presently, the other new separator can be used for both wet and dry applications. It is a medium-intensity, high- gradient magnetic separator employing a filamentary matrix. It was primarily developed for recovery of weakly magnetic iron ore fines, but it is finding applications for cleaning of industrial minerals such as wollastonite, calcite, clay and talc. Its main advantage is a simple design resulting in a very lm cost machine both with regards to total capital investment and operation. A significant technical advantage exists also. The metallurgical performance is similar to conventional electromagnetic separators, while the cost per ton is about half of such separators.

As high grade nickel sulphide ores are being depleted and with the continuing challenges experienced in economically processing nickel laterite ores, it is important to investigate technologies that can extract nickel from low grade ultramafic ores which are present in large quantities worldwide. In the Thompson Nickel Belt, there are some hundred million tonnes of mineralization that are potentially amenable to surface mining. Since the original discovery of the Thompson orebody, recovery of nickel from these ultramafic deposits has been an elusive goal. Research and development projects as well as commercial processing have been attempted. In the 2000&apos;s as other resources became scarcer, a major drilling, mine evaluation and research project was initiated at Vale. In 2007, Vale Base Metals Technology Development invited Cytec and potential academic partners to participate in an industry-university research consortium with the goal of developing new technologies and methods of processing the ultramafic deposits. Three university professors, J. Finch of McGill, P. Somasundaran of Columbia and R. Pelton of McMaster accepted, each group attacking the problem with a different approach. This paper describes the management of the research consortium and the significance of the results from Vale&apos;s perspective. The next four papers in this session will summarize the project and results from the partners&apos; point of view. Vale is pleased to share the experience of the collaborative research and development with the mining industry.
