The removal of calcium from the retentates of reverse osmosis (RO) treated minewater is desirable since it allows the recovery of both additional potable water (through RO) and higher-purity salts (in downstream processing). This, in turn, reduces the need for costly and unsustainable evaporation ponds and enhances the economics and operability of potential zero-liquid discharge downstream processes, e.g. evaporative-, cooling- and eutectic freeze-crystallisation. For this study, a multi-component retentate high in sodium content was considered, typical of those emanating from minewater reclamation plants in Mpumalanga, South Africa. Four technologies were evaluated to remove calcium: gypsum precipitation by addition of lime; calcium carbonate precipitation by addition of soda-ash; heating crystallisation of calcium sulphate anhydrite; and cooling crystallisation of gypsum. Full processes were developed and simulated using electrolyte thermodynamics. Using the results of these simulations, capital- and operating costs, as well as revenues were calculated and used in economic comparisons of the processes. Sensitivities to key purchasing and selling prices were also investigated to understand the impact of changes in these variables. For the case of a low magnesium-to-sodium ratio in the feed, gypsum precipitation through lime addition was found to have the lowest operating and total annualised costs; but, if revenue could be derived from the sale of sodium sulphate, calcium carbonate precipitation through soda-ash addition was favoured. Leaching or solution mining, a relatively simple and economical process for beneficiating metallic ores, is likely to find increasing application in the treatment of low-grade ores that are impractical to mine by any other means. This process may be carried out in two different ways: 1. Dump leaching, where the ore is moved from its original location to be leached at another site. 2. In situ leaching, where the ore is leached in place by introducing the leach solution at the top, letting it flow down through the ore under gravity, and then recovering it plus the dissolved metals it contains.

THE advent of the Rocky Mountain States into prominence as an oil-producing region is comparatively recent. Scarcely more than a decade has passed since the number of producing oilfields in this part of the country were few and their combined yield small and relatively unimportant. However, oil was discovered and recorded near the present site of Lander, Wyo., as early as 1833 and in 1867, on the comple-tion of the Union Pacific R. R., the site of this oil discovery was located, among other things, as a natural resource of economic importance. In that year a well was drilled for oil, to a depth of 480 ft., near Evanston, Wyo., but later was abandoned. In 1883, the Lander district witnessed the successful completion of the first oil well in the state. In Colorado, oil was first produced from shallow open wells near Canon City and sold to prospectors in 1864; in 1887, the Florence oilfield was discovered and a commercial production developed. While the Rocky Mountain States have never gained the prominence as an oil-producing region attained by the Pacific Coast, Mid-Continent, or Gulf fields, a substantial and increasing production is being taken from the Rocky Mountain province. At the close of 1923, the oil industry in this region has 38 oil and 21 gas fields producing, or capable of producing, oil or gas in a commercial way with a combined annual yield of nearly 47,000,000 bbl. of oil, a daily refining capacity aggregating about 90,000 bbl., upwards of 17,000,000 bbl. of crude in storage, and an 8-in. pipeline, nearing completion, 600 miles long which will connect the most prolific oilfield of the Rocky Mountain States with a trunk pipeline between Mid-Continent and the east at Carrollton, Mo. Several of the larger standard and independent operating companies are now represented in this region and, in the last ten years, there has been developed at Casper one of the large refining centers of the west. Fig. 1 illustrates the rise in production of four of the larger fields, also in the total production of the state; in addition there is given the yield of the larger fields of Wyoming and Montana for 1923.

Bath smelting technology, such as the submerged lance smelting furnace, is used in the modern copper making industry. The first submerged lance smelting furnace developed by Dongying Fangyuan Nonferrous Metals Co., Ltd has shown potential for high productivity and energy savings. In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was applied to investigate the current design of the furnace. A three-dimensional multiphase CFD model was developed to study the interaction between injected gas and the liquid bath. The multiphase Eulerian model was used for simulating gas/liquid two-phase flow. The flow pattern in the submerged lance smelting furnace indicated rapid flow development and strong turbulent interactions between the gas and liquid phases. The model was validated based on a water model experiment of the mixing process. Mixing times from the simulation results show good agreement with experimental data. Additionally, based on this model, the gas residence time and liquid copper matte splashing phenomena under varying gas flow rates were investigated.

"Development of failure in brittle materials is associated with microcracks, which release energy in the form of elastic waves called acoustic emissions. This paper presents results from acoustic emission measurements obtained during three-point bending tests on Nestos marble under laboratory conditions. Acoustic emission activity was monitored using piezoelectric acoustic emission sensors, and the potential for accurate prediction of rock damage based on acoustic emission data was investigated. Damage localization determined based on acoustic emissions evident in the critically stressed region in the form of scattered events or stresses below and close to the strength of the material.IntroductionNon-destructive testing (NDT) has gained popularity in recent years due to commonly available sensors, devices and software tools. Although the majority of such testing still occurs under laboratory conditions, the ultimate goal is a direct field application, especially in the case of underground mining. NDT, if properly applied, may be used to directly provide material property values and characteristics that can be used to determine rock mass or soil mass behavior, with a direct impact to mine design (Iannacchione et al., 2003).AE is generally defined as the high-frequency transient elastic waves originating from the sudden release of energy at localized points within a loaded material (Nomikos et al., 2010). The field of Acoustic Emissions (AE) due to compressive, tensile or other types of loads is a promising research area due to its wide application. The accurate identification of failure precursors stemming from AE is still an open research topic (Lei et al., 2004).Rock is a typically inhomogeneous and anisotropic material that contains several natural defects with various scales such as grain boundaries, microcracks, pores and joint inclusions (Jing, 2003; Read, 2004). Damage induced by microcracks is an essential mechanism in many brittle rocks subjected to stresses. An applied stress induces microcrack growth and damage is distributed uniformly throughout the sample. Finally, the microcracks coalesce and the damage is localized to a shear band, leading to strain softening and macro-scoping failure (Dragon et al, 2000)."

Preliminary results are reported regarding the design and development of a pilot scale air sparged hydrocyclone for cleaning fine coal 590 pm (- 28 mesh) containing 24% ash and 1.6% sulfur. The principle of separation is the flotation of hydrophobic coal particles in the centnjugal field generated by the fluid flow in the air sparged hydrocyclone as discussed in another publication. This 152-mm (6-in.) hydrocyclone has a nominal capacity of 0.9 t/h (1 tph) and experimental results suggest that separations vastly superior to a water-only cyclone are possible. In addition the separation efficiency is as good, if not better, than that achieved with conventional flotation cells. For example, typical results indicate that 75% clean coal can be recovered at 15% ash leaving a tailing product of almost 50% ash. These experimental results coupled with the high capacity of the air sparged hydrocyclone (imagine a retention time for flotation of only two seconds compared to two minutes for conventional flotation) may represent a significant breakthrough, not only in coal preparation technology, but in the flotation of fine particles in general.

The objectives of the investigation herein reported were to determine: (I) the S-curves for certain selected cast steels, (2) whether or not the published S-curves for wrought steels are satisfactory for use on cast steels of similar composition, and (3) to prepare hardenability curves of the selected cast steels. In order to make the final comparisons between cast and wrought steel more completely tangible, it was deemed advisable not only to determine S-curves for the steels submitted in the cast condition but also to roll some of the cast-steel test bars and determine comparison S-curves on such wrought material. This procedure eliminates the composition variable and makes it possible to reveal the differences resulting from plastic deformation of the cast structure in addition to providing the comparison with published data on wrought steels. Cast Steels The cast steels selected for the preparation of S-curves, or time-temperature transformation curves, were similar to S.A.E. series 1030, 2330, 4130 and 4330. Of these the 1030 was supplied by The Crucible Steel Casting Co., Cleveland, Ohio, and the other three by The Sawbrook Steel Castings Co., Lockland, Ohio. The steels were furnished in the as-cast condition. The manufacturers supplied the chemical analyses and the properties that could be obtained in the heat-treated condition—all of which is summarized in Table I. This paper reviews the recovery of potassium from different rocks and mineral sources. Global demand for potassium is rising steadily due to the growth of agricultural production. Fertilizer manufacture consumes the majority of the world’s potassium production, with other uses including those in the pharmaceutical, glass, ceramic, food and detergent industries. The availability of soluble potash (K2O) minerals, such as sylvite, kainite and carnalite, in countries like Canada, the United States, Israel and Russia makes them major potash producers, whereas agriculture-based countries like Liberia, Somalia, Central African Republic, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and India meet their potassium requirements through imports only. In these countries, the huge availability of potassium-bearing rocks/minerals like nepheline syenite, feldspar, mica and glauconitic sandstone, containing around 4 to 17 percent K2O, brings up the prospect of commercial production of potassium. Potassium recovery from minerals/rocks is complicated due to the uniform distribution of potassium throughout the crystal structure. Different physico-chemical separation methods like bioleaching, chemical leaching, flotation and roast-leaching have been discussed for the successful recovery of potash values from these rocks/minerals. Although seawater is vastly available, the recovery of potassium from seawater using chemical precipitation, solvent extraction, membrane separation and ion-exchange methods is not cost-effective due to low concentration of potassium.

With the goal of reducing injuries and fatalities related to haul truck accidents, this research investigates technologies and intervention strategies for improving worker training using a virtual environment (VE). Funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), this research specifically focuses on training workers in preshift inspections of haul trucks to avoid preventable defects from causing worker injuries and expensive equipment damage. Improved training in these inspections is expected to increase uptime. The VE developed to train workers for preshift inspections consists of three phases: the virtual tour, the virtual inspection and the shift simulation. The virtual tour introduces information necessary to conduct a preshift inspection by guiding the worker around a haul truck, identifying parts to be inspected and explaining defects to look for. The virtual inspection assesses retention as the worker navigates around a haul truck and identifies defects. During the shift simulation, the worker is shown a simulation of the work shift, which animates severe consequences of any overlooked defects to emphasise the importance of preshift inspections. To provide multiple training platforms, desktop and CAVEÖ versions of the training VE were created. Flux Studio was used to model the environment and to produce Virtual Reality Modelling Language (VRML) files for the desktop version. DIVERSE, an application programming interface, was then used to implement a more realistic version of the VE in a CAVEÖ, a room-sized visualisation system. Initial feedback from mining colleagues indicates that the training VE may replace normal classroom training for preshift inspections in the future. As opposed to PowerPoint presentations and instructional videos, the training VE provides better spatial understanding of the location of parts and incorporates interactive features to actively engage drivers in the learning process, which may result in better retention. Initial feedback also indicates that minor improvements can be made to the virtual tour and virtual inspection phases.

The Ambuklao and Binga Rehabilitation Project is a 175 MW hydro power project currently under construction across dual sites in the north region of Luzon Island, Philippines. When it was built in 1956, the Ambuklao Dam harnessed the second largest hydro-electric reservoir in Asia. However, due to landslide erosion and prolonged silt infiltration caused by an earthquake in 1990, the power plant has been rendered inoperable since 1999.To bring the power generating facility back to life, the project scope entails the rehabilitation and construction of civil structures, shafts and tunnels. A major component of these works is the decommissioning of a section of the seven metre diameter headrace tunnel by installing a concrete plug. The headrace tunnel is part of a closed waterway system that connects the dam via a shaft, exhibiting a hydrostatic pressure of 13 bar (1300 kPa) at the location of the new tunnel plug. In addition, the power station ball valves have seized ajar and the damaged intake riser is unsafe toaccess thereby requiring the plugging operation to be carried out under live flowing conditions.Working under hydrostatic pressure and live conditions, the headrace plug will be an underwater tremie pour operation that includes drilling and concrete injection through blow out preventer caissons installed in the floor of an underground chamber above the tunnel. The purpose of this paper is to describe the key engineering and planning components involved in this operation including pre- and post-grouting, chamber crane, sonar, local water compensation, jet flushing, drilling, caisson installation, and concrete design, production, delivery and placement. The success of this task rests on the strategic preparation and operational management of risk and safety in a challenging rural environment.

Quartz, adularia and clay minerals from low-sulfidation epithermal veins at Hishikari were analyzed for their oxygen and hydrogen stable isotope compositions to establish the source of paleohydrothermal waters. Positive correlation between Au-Ag and adularia: quartz ratio, the presence of quartz pseudomorphs of bladed calcite, and Au-bearing smectite and vermiculite is indicative, but not definitive, evidence for the control of boiling on ore mineralization. Oxygen isotope equilibrium temperatures between quartz and adularia are about 220¦C and average homogenization temperatures of fluid inclusions vary between 190 to 210¦C. The calculated d18OH2O and dDH2O values (from quartz, adularia and early smectite) are consistent with paleohydrothermal fluids that were a mixture of magmatic and meteoric waters, or alternatively, the values could derive from heated meteoric water which had undergone isotope exchange during circulation through basement rock. Overall, d18Oqtz values in veins increase toward the north, most likely reflecting palaeo-fluid flow (source).

The new legislative regime applying to the mining industry has been in force for nearly two years. However the parameters for the permits required under the Crown. Minerals Act 1991 and the resource consents required under the Resource Management Act 1991 are still being established. Mining operators will benefit from participating in the development of policies and plans currently being formulated by local authorities. The Energy Legislation Amendment Bill currently before the House contains amendments to the Crown Minerals Act to clarify points of uncertainty and to reduce transaction costs where possible.

The effect of anions such as sulfate, chloride, and nitrate on the solubility of rare earth element-bearing phosphates and fluorocarbonates has been examined using relevant thermodynamic data. The study has found that these anions have significant influences on the overall dissolution of rare earth elements (REEs) from various sources in the aqueous media. The thermodynamic calculations in this study have indicated that the speciation of REEs with the anions tends to increase the overall solubility of the REE-bearing minerals. However, in some cases, strong precipitation of REEs with some of these anions causes an adverse effect on the solubility of these elements. It has been found that sulfate ion has the most pronounced effect on the solubility compared to nitrate and chloride, in which the latter two acids exhibited almost identical results. The calculated results have indicated that REE-oxide (hydrated) is the easiest compound to dissolve, followed by carbonate, phosphate, fluoride, sulfate, fluoro-carbonate, and oxalate in that order.

Sources of lead contaminated soils are numerous, i.e., the uses of leaded gasoline, lead-based paints, leaded pesticides, solders, smelting of lead concentrates, refining of lead products, automobile demolition, recycling of lead batteries, and so on. Conservative estimation by the US Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, indicated that several thousand lead contaminated sites are awaiting remediation. The current remediation technologies include immobilization, reclamation and soil washing. In this paper, the above remediation technologies will be reviewed, and where appropriate, the economics of processes discussed and future possibilities indicated.

"2507 super duplex stainless steel (SDSS) has been widely applied in a marine environment, attributing to its excellent pitting corrosion resistance and mechanical properties which are particularly determined by the nitrogen precipitation behaviors and volume fraction of ferrite. In this paper, various cooling rates were obtained by applying four different moulds with the common gating system. By which the influence of cooling rates on nitrogen precipitation behaviors and the ferrite fraction in cast 2507 SDSS was comparatively investigated. The results showed that nitrogen porosity could easily precipitate in cast 2507 SDSS under standard atmospheric pressure. The number of nitrogen holes increased with decreasing the cooling rates, and the holes mainly distributed in three zones, i.e. the interface between the horizontal and vertical columnar grains, top vertical columnar grains and the final solidification region. Additionally, higher ferrite fraction was obtained with lower cooling rates.IntroductionDuplex stainless steels (DSS) have a dual-phase microstructure consisting of ferrite (d) and aus-tenite (?). Due to the combined advantageous properties of d and ? phase, their application rapid-ly increased in industry [1, 2]. Super duplex Stainless Steel (SDSS) is the third generation of du-plex stainless steels, of which the alloy elements Cr, Ni and N content are higher than the stand-ard 2205 DSS. Because it has high contents of alloy elements, the SDSS has better mechanical properties, and its pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) reached a point 43. Hence SDSS has been used in petroleum chemical industry, the marine equipment and harsh corrosion environments [3]. SDSS contains ferrite stabilizing elements, such as Cr, Mo and Si, and austenite stabilizing elements like Ni, Mn and N [4]. Many researchers have studied the effects of these elements on the stabilization of d and ? phase and the ratio of the two phases. High nitrogen con-tent is another prominent feature of SDSS. Nitrogen addition to SDSS is very effective for improving its mechanical properties [5] and corrosion resistance [6], such as pitting resistance in NOx environment. To increase the nitrogen content in steels, a lot of work had been done. N. Nakamura and S. Takaki [7] examined the behavior of nitrogen absorption in Fe-23Cr alloy powder by sintering in nitrogen gas atmosphere, they found nitrogen content easily up to 1.0 wt. %. Using devised NH3 gas injection system, W. Park et al. [8] successfully produced austenitic Fe–23.5Cr alloys containing over 3 wt. % of nitrogen. Further-more, W.P. Tong et al. [9] stated that nitrogen percent was extraordinary high (about 10 wt. %) in pure iron plate. However, the above methods are difficult to be applied to large-scale industrial production."

Remote control for mining machines ordinarily means the operator is not seated on the machine, but is located within direct view of the machine and work area Thus, remote control operators are exposed to the hazards of roof/rib falls and dust/methane explosions. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a method to disassociate remote operators from these hazards. Off-board, computer-based "tele-operational" systems are utilized that station the operators one-hundred meters or more distant from the working faces. Details are provided for tele-operated systems for thin-seam extraction and haulage equipment in highwall and deep, room-and-pillar coal mines.

A process is described for the recovery of valuable nonferrous metals from steelmaking dust by suiphatizing roasting using ammonium sulphate. Maximum recoveries of soluble metal sulphates achieved at optimum conditions were> 99.0 %. Selective metal separation of the soluble sulphates in the leached liquors were performed either by controlling the roasting temperature or by adjustment the pH values of the leached liquor ranging from 3.6-6.2. Either pure zinc oxide orland tin oxide could be obtained at optimum conditions, and the products were evaluated chemically and by X-ray analyses. The residues rich in iron oxide can be removed and recycled. The mechanism of sulphatizing roasting process was considered. A general flow-sheet for the overall process of treatment the steel making dust to recover its valuable nonferrous metals was suggested, which ca be applied for other nonferrous bearing materials.

The use of radioisotopes in obtaining basic information on large scale industrial processing is illustrated with two examples. The first is concerned with the operating characteristics of a kiln scrubbing tower and the second with those of a Hardinge ore mill. The examples show the advantages associated with the industrial use of tracers as well as the limitations. The Atomic Energy Commission regulations governing the use of radioisotopes in this manner are also discussed. The nuclear properties of radioactive isotopes have provided a new technique for obtaining basic information on large scale industrial processing. A small portion of the process stream is made radioactive by mixing with a suitable radioisotope or by irradiation in a nuclear reactor. The "tagged" portion is then part of the normal process stream and can be followed by detection and measurement of the associated radioactivity. The advantages of radioactive tracing over other forms of tracers are well known, and include such factors as chemical similarity, capability of precise determination of very small quantities due to the high sensitivity of detection apparatus, and the absence of foreign element contamination of the final product. This report will illustrate two applications of the use of radioactive tracers in large scale industrial processing which have provided information that would have been hard to obtain by other means. The first is concerned with the operating characteristics of a kiln scrubbing tower and the second with those of a Hardinge ore mill. "Kinross Gold Corporation’s Mantos de Oro (MDO) gold/silver mine in northern Chile currently processes 15,000 tpd of oxide ores through a mill, whole ore cyanide leach plant followed by a Merrill-Crowe refinery. With the expected depletion of these oxide ores in a few years a new sulphide mineral deposit, Ladera-Farellón has been identified to potentially replace existing ore reserves. The deposit contains approximately 0.5g/t Au, 6g/t Ag and 0.5% Cu. The principal sulphide mineral in the deposit is enargite (Cu3AsS4) which hosts the majority of gold and silver and the copper. Direct cyanidation testwork has shown the sulphide mineral is refractory with a low gold recovery of 36% and silver recovery of 45%. Oxidation of the sulphides is required to liberate gold and silver and allow recovery of copper as an important pay-metal. Therefore, at MDO a new metallurgical process route with oxidation as a pretreatment step is required for viable treatment of such new sulphide mineralized material with acceptable recoveries of pay-metals.Analysis of flowsheet options was completed based on bench-scale and pilot scale metallurgical testwork as well as with reference to existing studies and operations. The process options investigated assume concentration of sulphides by flotation, followed by either pressure oxidation, bacteriological oxidation or roasting. Preliminary evaluation of flowsheet options focused on process risk, operability, technology availability and the economics of the project with emphasis on use of the existing metallurgical plant to reduce capital cost. Operating costs for each process option were also included in the relative analysis.The challenges of treatment of MDO sulphides, principally enargite and pyrite for recovery of gold, silver and copper center on fixation of arsenic and sulphur capture with environmentally acceptable disposal of residue tailings. This environmental focus was included in the process option selection and comparative analysis.This paper presents a review of the process options considered and highlights comparative advantages/disadvantages of each process with associated environmental issues. Preliminary conclusions are drawn on roasting as a potentially favorable process option for the treatment of MDO sulphides."
