Talc is an important industrial commodity due to its wide-ranging intrinsic properties; however, the presence of iron oxide hinders its industrial utilization. Herein, we report the purification of Pakistani talc through acid leaching assisted by chlorination techniques. Among various acids (i.e., HF, HCl, H2SO4, HNO3, H3PO4, Aqua Regia, H3BO3, and CH3COOH), HF was the most effectual, removing up to 67% of iron oxide at optimized conditions of temperature, 90–95 °C; time, 120 min; HF concentration of 5%; and at a pH of 1. In the second step, chlorination of the talc sample was performed separately by both wet chlorination and dry chlorination. Wet chlorination was carried out using KMnO4 and HCl in slurry phase which shown about 52% removal of iron oxide, whereas dry chlorination with CaCl2 at high temperature attained about 48% removal of iron oxide from talc sample. Further, the wet chlorination of HF leached samples was also performed under optimized conditions which showed up to 87% iron oxide removal. The original and treated talc samples were characterized by EDX and XRD analysis to monitor the changes in the elemental and mineralogical composition of the talc. It can be concluded that HF leaching followed by wet chlorination is an effective method for the upgradation of low-grade Pakistani talc ores.

This chrysotile asbestos orebody is located near the northern tip of the Province of Quebec, Canada. It is some 1818 km (1130 mi) north of Montreal; 480 km (300 mi) north of the tree line and is situated within the zone of continuous permafrost. The open pit ore zone is approximately 0.4 km (1/4 mi) in length some 61 m (200 ft) in width and plunges at 25-30 below surface to a vertical depth of at least 610 m (2000 ft). The orebody was originally evaluated by programs of surface mapping, diamond drilling and bulk sampling. The fibre is semi-crude, possesses excellent strength, and good fibre length distribution.

Joint ventures exist as a means of sharing risks and obeying regulations. An unincorporated joint venture allows a company to take a share only of a project yet allows that company to treat such share as though it were an integral part of the company. The nature of the risks inherent in many ventures is described and comparisons made with alternative corporate vehicles. Different procedures for managing joint ventures are also reviewed and the types of problem encountered in establishing and operating joint ventures are discussed. The basic characteristics of successful joint ventures, in Australia, are listed and a conclusion reached that, despite its difficulties, the joint venture will continue to proliferate as a corporate vehicle for project development.

In the United States water pollution resulting from mining activities has long been recognized as a major environmental problem Mine drainage pollution results from many types of mining activities and includes both physical (i e , sedimentation) and chemical (i e , acidification, metal contamination, etc ) pollutants Active and abandoned surface and underground mines, mineral processing plants, mine and processing plant waste disposal areas, haulage roads, and tailing ponds are typical sources of mine related water pollution (130) One of the most serious pollution problems arising from mining activities is acid mine drainage resulting from the chemical reaction of sulfide minerals (commonly iron sulfides) and air in the presence of water Acid mine drainage is commonly associated with coal and hard rock mining areas in the United States In general the more serious and extensive acid mine drainage problems exist in the more humid coal regions east of the Mississippi River (11) In 1964 the U S Department of the Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service, reported that acid mine drainage adversely affected fish and wildlife habitat in 9,477 kilometers (5,890 miles) of streams and 6,062 hectares (14,967 acres) of impoundments in 20 states in the United States (64) Of the total affected waters, coal mining operations accounted for 97 percent of the acid mine drainage pollution reported for streams and 93 percent of that reported for impoundments In 1970 more than 19,308 kilometers (12,000 miles) of streams in the United States were reportedly significantly degraded by mining related pollution (130) Of the total affected kilometers, 16,920 kilometers (10,516 miles) or approximately 88 percent were located in the Appalachian coal region (Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, eastern Kentucky, Tennessee, Maryland, and Alabama) In addition, more than 965 kilometers (600 miles) of streams reportedly were degraded by coal mining in states in the Illinois, Western Interior, and Rocky Mountain coal regions The remaining portion of the stream pollution resulted from the mining of (1) copper (california, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Tennessee, Virginia, and Wyoming), (2) lead and zinc (Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Oklahoma, and Tennessee), (3) uranium (Rocky Mountain States), (4) iron (Lake Superior iron region), (5) sand and gravel (all states), (6) phosphate (Florida and other states), (7) gold (Alaska), (8) bauxite and barite (Arkansas), and (9) molybdenum, gold, and other metals (Colorado) Abandoned mines and abandoned mine waste disposal areas contribute a large portion of the total pollution resulting from mining activities Numerous abandoned underground mines are located throughout the United States and many are discharging mine drainage pollutants In 1966 the U S Bureau of Mines estimated that more than 88,000 inactive and abandoned underground mines were in existance (126) A listing of these mines by state is presented in Table 1 0-1 More recent estimates indicate that this list is incomplete In Colorado alone there is

The influence of thermal and mechanical treatments upon the elevated-temperature stability, the microstructure, and the mechanical properties of aluminumaluminum oxide alloys is investigated. Compacts from atomized and flake aluminum powders were sintered at temperatures just below the melting point of aluminum in a vacuum of 10-4 Torr for several hours and were then hot-extruded. During this treatment the hydrated oxide present on the surface of the powder particles decomposes, the water vapor produced reacts with the aluminum forming additional oxide, and the hydrogen developed is removed by diffusion to the surface. Extrusions of compacts so treated are stable at temperatures up to the melting point of aluminum and do not form blisters and internal defects typical of extrusions from untreated powder. Electron micrographs of extrusions from unsintered compacts show long parallel oriented platelets typical of the IN previous investigations1,2 the properties and structure of aluminum alloys were described which had been produced by cold compacting aluminum powder and then hot pressing and extruding the compacts. Both the structure and the properties of these alloys differ significantly from those of commercially produced aluminum-aluminum oxide alloys. When commercial alloys are produced, they are given a sintering treatment in air at about 600°C between cold compacting and hot pressing.3 During this treatment the hydrated oxide, which forms the coating on the aluminum-powder particles from which the alloys are prepared, is decomposed.4 The chemically bound water which is released reacts with the aluminum and forms aluminum oxide and hydrogen. Most of the hydrogen is eliminated by hydrated oxide skins on the original powder particles, while the oxide particles in extrusions from sintered compacts are broken up. The strength of extrusions from treated powder is somewhat lower, but their ductility is considerably improved over that of extrusions from untreated powder. The slip-trace patterns on electron microgvaphs of extrusions which had been strained in tension before replication indicated that the grain size of the extruded alloys was approximately the same as that of the original powder particles. Coarse-grained alloys were produced by severe cold work and annealing of the extrusions. They have significantly lower room-temperature strength, but about the same ductility as the vacuum-sintered fine-grained alloys. The size and shape of oxides in the coarsegrained alloys is similar to those of the fine-grained alloys, but the particles are somewhat more uniformly distributed. diffusing to the interior or exterior surfaces of the compact, but it is difficult to eliminate all of it because the solubility of hydrogen in solid aluminum is very low even near its melting point. Extruded alloys which are not sintered before hot pressing and extrusion appear quite sound upon metallo-graphic examination, but develop severe surface blistering and internal fissuring when they are heated to elevated temperatures after extrusion. Fissures and blisters have been observed even in commercial alloys which had been sintered in air, although they are much less severe.' Because of the importance of this sintering treatment it was studied in this investigation in a modified form, using vacuum sintering rather than sintering in air, to insure more complete elimination of occluded hydrogen. The technique is described and the effect of the treatment upon the structure of the alloys is documented. It has been known for some time that extruded aluminum-aluminum oxide alloys are very finegrained, but an exact delineation of grains in electron micrographs has not been possible. "Demonstration studies were carried on the use of fly ash as soil modifier and supplier of micronutrients to improve the agricultural productivity based on the process optimised at lab scale at Advanced Materials & Processes Research Institute, Bhopal. The field trials were conducted in Uttar Pradesh (North India) Orissa (South Eastern India) and Madhya Pradesh (Central India) under different soil and crop conditions. 100-650 tonnes of fly ash per hectare were applied depending upon the soil and fly ash characteristics. Both short and long term studies on impact of fly ash on soil and food quality were conducted. With the fly ash application, the edible yield of tomato, cabbage, potato, wheat, pea, onion, paddy, sunflower, maize etc., were increased from 12 - 46% as compared to the control soil where no fly ash was used. The crop response to various elements mainly heavy metals grown in soil and fly ash applied soil was found comparable to that of control, which are within the permissible limits and meet the food quality standards. The results of impact of fly ash on biotic and abiotic properties of soil, along with the quantity and quality of agricultural produces generated under pilot scale demonstrations in three different parts of India are discussed in this paper. The outcome of this work could act as guiding force for confidence building and to maximise the use of fly ash, generated from thermal power plants worldwide as one of the major mineral waste for agriculture purposes.IntroductionThe advantages of application of fly ash in terms of improvement of soil properties and crop yields have been published by various researchers in India and abroad. Attention is also given about the possible negative and beneficial impact of pond ash in agriculture due to presence of heavy elements, radioactive nuclides and plant nutrients in fly ash. It is evident from the analysis of Indian fly ash that the presence of heavy elements and radionuclides levels are comparable with normal soil. The positive impact that has been reported is with regard to germination, yield and crop growth. The significant impacts are: long term effect of heavy and toxic elements content of fly ash on soil and up take of these elements by plant. Pilot scale demonstration studies have been completed with varying soil crop-combination under different agro-climatic conditions showed considerable improvement in the productivity of cereals, oil seeds and vegetables."

Since its introduction in 1989, the Australasian Joint Ore Reserves Code (the JORC Code or the Code) has been one of the success stories of the informational interface between the mining industry and investors. This is due variously to the user-friendly nature of the Code itself, to its practical approach to this complex subject, and to the way in which its requirements have been implemented in practice. Recognition of its utility and effectiveness has influenced a significant number of mining countries to re-assess their reporting standards with the positive outcome being that for the first time, a set of standard international definitions for reporting of mineral resources and reserves is a realistic possibility.

In 1994, Nkana smelter commissioned a multimillion US Dollar Chilean Teniente converter (CT) in its operations in order to improve its smelting technological base. The main objective was to reduce the overall smelting energy costs and increase the sulphur capture for sulphuric acid production to support the company?s leaching operations at Nchanga tailings leach plant. A decade of CT operations have since ensued following its installation and start-up. This paper provides a technical and operational audit of the performance of the CT in the first 10 years of its operations at Nkana smelter.

The extractive phase of broad-scale mining can have major impacts on landscapes and associated ecosystems. Post-mining ecological rehabilitation typically starts with reconstructing topography. A fairly common industry practice has been to use landform elements such as plateaus, terraces, and gentle slopes for stabilisation purposes. However, this approach can lead to the generation of fairly uniform landforms that do not necessarily reflect natural ecosystems. Previous research in undisturbed and agricultural landscapes shows that ecological attributes and diversity in microclimates is positively correlated with landform heterogeneity. An objective of this study was to investigate if those findings are still valid in post-mining rehabilitating landscapes on North Stradbroke Island, Queensland, Australia. We investigated the relationship between landform heterogeneity and status of ecological recovery. The landform heterogeneity is measured through variance in three landform characteristics (relief, slope, aspect) using remote-sensing data and the status of ecological recovery is represented by ecological indicators measured through field surveys. The results indicate strong correlations between landform heterogeneity indices and native vegetation species richness with sensitivity to the spatial scale of investigation. It is recognised that climate, substrate and rehabilitation practices act as primary drivers of rehabilitation success. However, the results indicate that, in some examples, landform heterogeneity (heterogeneity in relief and slope angles) contributes up to 30 to 50?per?cent of the variance in native vegetation species richness. While the primary drivers of ecological recovery are difficult to control over extensive areas and extended time periods, landform heterogeneity provides a tool to indirectly control the micro-environmental parameters to improve ecological recovery. Reducing the uncertainties in the choice of ecological and landform indices and the degree of landform heterogeneity suitable for particular rehabilitating landscapes would be site specific. The introduction of desired landform heterogeneity may provide a very effective tool for significant improvement in ecological rehabilitation across broad-scale post-mine landscapes, an outcome of benefit to industry, government and local communities.CITATION:Datar, A and Mulligan,?D,?2014. The single track North Strathfield Rail Underpass (NSRU) consists of a dive structure either end of a 148 m long driven tunnel skewed under three live railway tracks. The tunnel is 8 m high, 9 m wide, with a horseshoe profile, excavated by full face using a road header. Ground cover varied between 2.5 m to 3.5 m. Settlements were 5 mm to 15 mm (the latter due to a dyke). A one pass synthetic fibre reinforced shotcrete lining was installed (no lattice girders or steel sets were used). A system of automated robotic total stations was used to provide real time monitoring of the rail track and associated ground formation. The Precambrian of Midcontinent United States includes a metamorphic belt of probable Middle Precambrian age, a belt of Keweenawan volcanics and sediments, and widespread igneous activity that extended from Iowa to Texas. Most of the present structural configuration of the Midcontinent was developed by epeirogenic movements during the Paleozoic. The dominant elements are basins and arches. Three major metallogenic provinces occur in the Midcontinent. They include the Missouri Precambrian iron ores, the Lake Superior copper ores, and the Mississippi Valley lead-zincbarite- fluorite deposits. Several large iron deposits, occurring in rhyolite and andesite host rocks, are known. Both discordant massive bodies and replacement- type bodies occur. The iron deposits are believed to have been formed during the period of igneous activity. They are essentially the same age as the volcanics and older than the granites that intrude the volcanics. The Lake Superior copper ores include two established districts, the Keweenawan district and White Pine, and the copper-nickel deposits in the Duluth gabbro. The lead-zinc-barite-fluorite deposits include four major districts, Southeast Missouri, Upper Mississippi Valley, Tri-State, and Illinois-Kentucky, and at least eight minor districts. Ore may occur in stratiform deposits and in veins. The major districts all contain stratiform deposits, but several have produced appreciable quantities of vein ore. Only vein deposits are known in some of the smaller districts. The major features of all districts can be catalogued in terms of host rocks, structural patterns of districts, types of ore-bearing structures, and mineralogical characteristics. From these features, a Mississippi Valley type ore body, in its type area, can be defined.

Numerous reactor designs for biological sulfate reduction have been reported. Fluidized-bed bioreactors (FBR) can efficiently retain biomass and allow high mass transfer and reaction rates. This work reviews the development of various sulfate-reducing FBR processes for treating acidic metal- and sulfate-containing waters and recovering metals from bioleaching liquors. The FBR process performance was evaluated with continuous flow experiments under various operational conditions: fluidization rates, influent pH values, metal, sulfate and salt concentrations, hydraulic retention times, electron and carbon sources, and temperatures. Substrate utilization and sulfide inhibition kinetics were determined with batch FBR-kinetic experiments. An artificial neural network (ANN) model was used to predict the performance of the FBR. Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) were characterized in FBRs with molecular and culture-based approaches with the aim to gain a better understating of the bioprocesses. Based on the studies, FBRs are well suited for the combined removal of metals, acidity and sulfate from water.

The problems connected with deep mine hoisting and the increasing complexity of this process can be analysed through the application of such mathematical tools as stochastic modelling to study the effectiveness, reliability or safety of hoist methods. To relate these theoretical investigations to real practice, knowledge about components, their stochastic nature and stochastic order of appearance is necessary. This paper presents results obtained during the ten-year (1976-85) period of research undertaken in the Polish mining industry by the Mining Mechanisation Institute of the Silesian Technical University, Gliwice, Poland.

"This paper covers the new six-strand curved-mould billet casting machine at the Contrecoeur Works of SidbecDosco. It commenced production of 3 Yz-in. square billets at the beginning of January 1972. Together with two 100- ton ultra-high-power electric furnaces in a new meltshop, it is the principal source of billets for the existing rod and bar mill also located at Contrecoeur. The paper develops the reasoning for casting-to-size 3Y2 -in. billets and for choosing a six-strand machine. It indicates the significance of Sidbec-Dosco Montreal Works' extensive experience in operating a four-strand curvedmould billet machine since 1965 and the ways in which this experience influenced the design and operation of the new caster. Machine features are described in detail, as are the reasons for some of the features. The installation, checkout and crew training are briefly discussed as well as the tundish teeming trials. The first cast on January 5, 1972, is covered and a log is shown of the first casts to an empty ladle. There are operating statistics covering the first 100 casts, which produced 8000 tons of good billets in ten weeks of operation. Machine performance and billet quality were good and the few minor problems encountered are described."

"A new approach to measure process conditions in flotation cells is presented. Real scale flotation cells in a Zinc circuit are imaged using Outotec LevelSense sensors based on electrical resistance tomography. The latest results from long period plant tests show that the sensors together with FrothControl analysis give new information that correlates well with other process parameters. The sensors can compensate for electrical contact contamination using an automatic calibration technique and they are basically maintenance free. The results indicate that using the LevelSense sensors and FrothControl solution, the process control and optimization can be done automatically, stabilizing and improving the metallurgical performance of the flotation process.INTRODUCTIONThe froth flotation process is widely used in mineral industry for the separation of minerals from low-grade ore slurry. Different property parameters of froth and slurry could be measured to monitor and control the flotation process: air bubble size distribution, flow dynamics, thickness of the froth bed, amount of solids in the froth, etc. Some techniques already exist that can be utilized in studying these important parameters on-line. Examples of the techniques are the high-speed video imaging, simple conductivity probes, ultrasound techniques, floats and pressure transducers (Maldonado et al., 2008). These techniques, however, often suffer from some limitations. For example, the video imaging only gives information from the surface of the froth, simple conductivity probes suffer from contamination and the floats may get stuck and therefore do not give reliable signal for process control and optimization."

There are several long-standing rules of thumb that are often quoted in mine ventilation studies. They include airway ‘carrying velocities’ and the critical upcast air velocity range that must be avoided to prevent a water blanket forming. Quoting these rules of thumb may lend an air of legitimacy to a ventilation design, and allow the design engineer to avoid having to study a problem from first principles. But how valid are these shortcuts in today’s rapidly changing world? This paper summarises research into the genesis of several commonly quoted rules of thumb. It finds that they were very specific to the local conditions, practices and economics at the time they were developed. It also presents examples where applying these rules of thumb outside of their original context can lead to unexpected and erroneous results.CITATION:Derrington, A S, 2017. "The Efemçukuru underground mine in western Turkey is an intermediate sulfidation, epithermal gold deposit. The bulk of the mineral resources and all of the mineral reserves lie within the Kestanebeleni (KB) vein system. This system comprises four spatially-distinct mineralised zones: the south ore shoot (SOS), the middle ore shoot (MOS), the north ore shoot (NOS) and the KB north-west ore shoot. Production currently occurs only in the SOS, MOS and NOS zones. The gold mineralisation is very fine grained and occurs as free grains in quartz and carbonate, and as inclusions in sulfide minerals. Gold is recovered as part of a sulfide concentrate by flotation methods. Though hosted in the KB vein, the gold mineralisation is not evenly distributed within the veins. Definition of its occurrence is totally dependent on diamond drilling.Diamond drilling at Efemçukuru is done with its own equipment and staff, all managed by the mine geology group. The process over the mine’s six year production history incorporates continual improvement with an innovative approach by focusing on the following: drill team organisation career development and training product research and effective equipment management cost reduction planning and scheduling of development for drill stations.Over 40 000 metres of mostly BQ size core are drilled annually by three drill rigs at a cost approaching US$35/m.The planning and execution of the drilling pattern depends on the configuration of the ore shoot and the planned mining method. Ore extraction is mainly by drift and fill mining augmented by about 15 per cent longhole stoping. The drilling of a specific area is scheduled to be finished 3 to 8 months prior to mining. "This report describes the trend of developments in electric brass-furnace practice in the last two years, and supplements Bureau of Mines Bulletin 202, ""Electric Brass-Furnace Practice"", which was published in 1922. In that bulletin it -as pointed out that some of the lines on which electric brass-furnace progress would take place were clear, but others were less so.Developments in foreign countries.Foreign brass-melters have not yet adopted electric melting to an extent comparable to its use in the United States. It is doubtful Whether all foreign countries combined use 100 electric brass furnaces; of these about 35 are of American make (Ajax, Detroit, Baily) and are operating in Canada, Mexico, England, France, Japan, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, Norway, Germany, Argentina and Czecho-Slovakia.`The Rennerfelt furnace finds some use in Sweden (1)c, notwithstanding its high metal loss on alloys high in zinc, Two German firms are reported(2) to be using the Rochling-Rodenhauser induction furnace on bronze, the average energy consumption being given as 400 kw.-h. per ton. No comment is made on any trouble from the ""pinch effect"", A firm in Switzerland is reported (3) to use three 600-lb., direct-arc furnaces of its own design to melt babbitt, antimonial lead, coinage silver, nickel, copper, and brass. The metal loss on yellow-brass turnings is high. Use Of a direct-arc furnace in England, with precautions aimed to prevent surface overheating, vas abandoned (4) in favor of an Ajax furnace."

An overall view of the perlite industry is concisely presented. The geology, mining, milling, processing, and applications of perlite, as well as the present status of the perlite industry are treated. Perlite, in strict petrological usage, describes a specific variety of volcanic glass in which strain, incident to cooling, yielded a concentric structure of fracturing which may be visible either to the naked eye or under a microscope. In commercial usage, the term perlite includes any naturally occurring acidic glass of volcanic origin that will expand when heated to a suitable temperature. The name perlite is a derivation of perlstein which originally defined "certain glassy rocks (hyaloliparites, hyalo-rhyolites) with numerous concentric cracks, from the fancied resemblance of broken out fragments to pearls."1 While perlite has been known to geologists for many years, it was not until 1941, while investigating perlite for use in enamel, that an assayer in Superior, Ariz., noted the unusual expansion characteristics of the ore. Further investigations were delayed until following World War II when many small plants were built and experimentation in the treatment and uses of perlite began. The Perlite Inst. was organized in 1949 to promote the development of the new industry, establish commercial standards through research, and to explore new uses and markets. The Institute, located in New York, represents some 50 producers in the U.S., Canada, Australia, England, France, Germany, Greece, Japan, Mexico, and New Zealand. In 1949, 71,l002 short tons of crude perlite were produced, sold or used by U. S. producers, and this figure increased to 325,0003 short tons by 1959. Such a rate of increase indicates the rapid and continuing growth of the perlite industry. GEOLOGY Perlite ore in its crude form has been found in seven of the mountainous western states, since un-devitrified siliceous volcanic rocks are limited to this section of the U. S. Commercially operated perlite deposits are normally of Eocene and Oli-gocene age.4 These deposits are often several hundred feet thick and may extend over hundreds of acres. In 1959, 13 companies in six states produced crude perlite, although the output in New Mexico comprised 79 pct of the total domestic crude output. Other states in order of their production were: Nevada, Arizona, California, Colorado, and Utah.5 Foreign deposits of perlite which are either producing or under exploration are Australia, Canada, Greece, Hungary,6 Iceland, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, and Sardinia. The ore may exhibit a variety of characteristics depending partially on its water content and eruption history and may range through many shades from black to white. While these characteristics may vary slightly among deposits, perlite ore from a particular source is normally quite uniform. Available chemical analyses of perlites from a large sampling of domestic deposits were recently assembled by the Technical Committee of Perlite Institute and are presented in Table I. While the ranges given do not apply to a particular perlite, they are an indication of the chemical analysis which may be expected from any presently commercially operated deposit. The specific gravity of the perlite ore ranges between 2.2 and 2.4, and its bulk density when crushed and sized is 75 to 90 Ib per cu ft. MINING AND MILLING Perlite ore is quarried from open pits by conventional power equipment, although blasting has been occasionally employed. The rock is then stock-piled until needed. While the milling of perlite may seem a simple process compared to that required for basic metals, or even other nonmetals, the need for accurate control of particle size becomes extremely important in further processing. The first step in this operation is the primary crusher, which is normally a jaw crusher. Following crushing, the material is dried, if necessary, in a rotary dryer and conveyed to a secondary grinder which may be a rod mill, hammer-mill, or cone crusher. However, the crushing characteristics of the perlite, caused by incipient cooling fractures, requires it be removed from the grinding operation once it is reduced to the required size so as to prevent overgrinding. Following the grinding operations, various size screens are used to separate the ore according to particle sizes required for particular uses. Most plants use two or more stages of crushing with perhaps four stages of screening.
