Viscosity of multicomponent slags is one of the crucial physicochemical properties for many industrial processes and technologies. While the viscosity-temperature relationship of completely molten slags can well be described by an Arrhenian-type law, the compositional dependence of viscosity is still not fully understood, especially in compositional regions with the lack of experimental data (eg at the glass-former concentration of 90 molar per cent or higher). In the present work major compositional relationships of the activation energy of viscous flow have been revised for numerous binary and ternary slag systems on the basis of experimental data collected and stored in the viscosity database OxiVis. For example, it has been found that the activation energy relevant to the polymerisation effect in binary systems of the MO-GFO type, where MO is the modifier oxide (ie monovalent K2O, Na2O, Li2O and bivalent CaO, MgO, BaO, MnO, PbO etc) and GFO is the glass-forming oxide (SiO2 or B2O3) is not always proportional to the third power of XGFO (contrary to the Urbain formalism) and can vary significantly dependent on the slag system. Also, the activation energy of the charge compensation effect has been revised for ternary systems of the AO-MO-GFO and AO-MO type, where AO is the amphoteric oxide (Al2O3, Fe2O3 or other). A simple polynomial model has been proposed on the basis of the carried-out analysis for estimation of viscosities of multicomponent slag systems. The model has been optimised against the experimental viscosities in the selected binary, ternary, and higher-order oxide systems and has been shown reasonable agreement with the experimental data.

"As mines return to shafts to economically exploit deeper reserves, two methods mine owners use to minimize short term costs are: sinking shafts in phases and refurbishing old, existing shafts. While there may appear to be benefits to utilizing existing infrastructure, often this is not the case, resulting in missed deadlines and added costs. Similarly, if proper long term planning is not executed when sinking a shaft in phases, additional costs and downtime will be accrued. This paper will take an in depth look at both of these options with an eye towards optimizing costs, minimizing downtime, and facilitating construction. INTRODUCTION With the onset of mechanized mining and large capacity trucks, many mines turned away from shafts and began to use ramps to haul ore to surface. However, continual exploitation of mineral reserves located closer to surface, combined with the subsequent unearthing of additional resources at greater depths, forced mines to go deeper and deeper to extend the life and keep the operation running. In shallow mines, hauling ore by truck was an economical option. However, as mines get deeper, driving ramps takes additional time, and hauling over longer and longer distances becomes less economic, both in terms of cost and time. For this reason Mexico, in particular, has seen a jump in the number of shafts which have been put into production, as well as having a number of shafts in different stages of development and still more in the conceptual stages. Many of the shaft projects in Mexico are being designed in phases, with the hoist and equipment purchased capable of reaching the ultimate planned depth of the shaft, but with sinking operations stopping short at an intermediate depth. A loading pocket is then installed to start exploiting mineral at this depth sooner, with subsequent phases planned for a later date using either a rock pentice or bulkhead to separate the sinking operations from the active shaft above. Currently, we are directly involved in two such projects which are actively being deepened, as well as having seen various others already reach completion. If done properly with the long-term plan in mind, sinking in phases can be a very viable option, allowing for faster production while fully utilizing the equipment at various depths. However, there are many issues which can arise when sinking a shaft in phases that if not properly examined and planned for from the outset, have the potential to eliminate the gains hoped for when it was decided to sink in this manner."

The distribution of carbon and the type of substructure in iron-carbon martensites containing 0.02 to 0.57pct C has been studied in the as-quenched condition and after tempering at 25" to 700°C by using electrical resistivity, internal friction, hardness, and light and electron microscope techniques. in marten-sites containing less than 0.2 pct C, almost 90 pct of the carbon segregates to dislocations and to lath boundaries during quenching; in martensites containing greater than 0.20 pct C, appreciable amounts of carbon enter normal interstitial positions located far from defects. Tempering martensites with carbon contents below 0.20 pct at temperatures below 150°C results in additional carbon segregation to dislocations and to lath boundaries but no carbide precipitation whereas -carbide precipitation occurs in martensites with carbon contents exceeding 0.2 pct. Above 150°C, a rod-shaped carbide (either Fe3C or Hagg) is precipitated in all cases. At 400°C, spheroidal Fe3C precipitates at lath boundaries and at former aus-tenite grain boundaries. At 400" to 600"C, recovery of the martensite defect structure occurs. At 600" to 700°C, recrystallization of the martensite and Ost-waW ripening of the Fe3C occur. The effects of the carbon segregation that occurs during quenching and the subsequent substructural changes that occur during tempering on martensite tetragonality, hardness, and precipitation behavior are discussed. A mathematical analysis of carbon segregation during quenching is presented. RECENT studies of the strength of low-carbon martensitel-4 emphasize the importance of carbon segregation to the martensite lath boundaries and to the dislocations contained between them during quenching. Unfortunately, very few studies of the tempering of low-carbon martensites have been conducted, so the exact nature of this segregation is poorly understood. In fact, most early tempering studies5,6 were restricted to carbon contents greater than 0.20 pct. Moreover, these studies did not determine the amount of carbon segregated to the martensite substructure during quenching so that the initial state of the martensite was not established. Aborn7 studied the precipitation of carbide in low-carbon martensite during quenching but did not establish whether carbon segregation occurs prior to carbide precipitation, nor did he study the subsequent tempering sequence in detail. In the present work we have used electrical resistance and internal friction measurements, supplemented by electron transmission microscopy to establish the carbon distribution in as-quenched specimens. Specimens thin enough to avoid carbide precipitation (but not carbon segregation) were employed. The redistribution of carbon on subsequent tempering below 250°C was followed by measurements of elec- trical resistance. Additional studies were made on specimens tempered at 250" to 700°C to elucidate the overall tempering behavior of low-carbon martensites, including the formation of cementite and recrystalli-zation of the martensite. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Eight iron-carbon alloys with 0.026, 0.057, 0.097, 0.18, 0.20, 0.29, 0.39, and 0.57 wt pct C were prepared as 8-lb ingots by vacuum melting. Typical impurities in wt ppm were 40 Si, 20 Mn, 30 S, 10 P, and 10 N. These alloys were hot rolled to 3 in. plate at 1095°C) (2000°F). The hot-rolled plates were surface ground to remove scale and the decarburized layer, then cold rolled to 0.010 in. sheet. Specimens cut from the sheet were austenitized for 30 min at 1000°C (1830°F) in a vacuum tube furnace in which the pressure did not exceed 2 x 10-3 torr. Chemical analysis of specimens after austenitization indicated no decarburization at this pressure. Immediately before quenching, the furnace was filled with prepurified helium. The specimen was then pushed rapidly through an aluminum foil gasket, which sealed the bottom of the furnace, into an iced-brine bath (10 pct NaC1, 2 pct NaOH). The quenching rate at the M, temperature is about 104'c per sec for 0.010 in thick specimens, as calculated from Newton's law of heat flow2 using a heat transfer coefficient of 25 ft-'. This quenching rate is sufficiently high so that all the alloys transformed completely to martensite throughout the entire 0.010 in thickness and no carbide precipitation occurred in the martensite. All specimens were immediately transferred to liquid nitrogen after quenching and stored there until needed. Tempering below 250°C (480°F) was done in silicone oil baths thermostatically controlled to *;"C. Tempering above 250°C was done in circulating air furnaces or lead pots with the specimens contained in evacuated silica capsules. Electrical resistance was determined by measurement of the potential drop across both a standard resistance and the specimen, connected in series. All resistance measurements were made in liquid nitrogen (77K, -196°C) to minimize thermal scattering of electrons and thus maximize the contribution of impurity scattering to the resistance. Specimen dimensions were 5.10 by 0.19 by 0.025 cm. Although the precision in the electrical resistance measurements was +0.1 pct, the electrical resistivities could only be measured with an accuracy of +5 pct because of uncertainty in the specimen dimensions. Internal friction measurements were performed in an inverted pendulum apparatus at vibration frequencies of either 1.9 or 66 Hz. The specimen dimensions were 5.10 by 0.375 by 0.025 cm. Hardness measurements were made with a Leitz-Wetzlar microhardness machine with loads of 100 g. Specimens were examined by light microscopy after etching in 2 pct Nital and by electron transmission microscopy after preparation of thin sections by electrolytic thinning in a chromic-acetic acid solution.

A cross-discipline approach combining geology, metallurgy and mine planning, geometallurgy is seen as the next logical advance in improving the design and operation of mining businesses. This rapidly evolving field is focused on realising the value that has often been lost in the chasms between the aforementioned technical silos. When successful, the geometallurgical approach promises the ability to tailor mining and mineral processing development and operational options more closely to the characteristics of the resource with resulting lower costs (both capital and operating), improved recoveries and fewer project failures.As with any technological (or managerial) change, there will be side effects from the success of the geometallurgical approach that will impact areas beyond obvious linkages between geology and processing. Some of these effects have the potential to be beneficial to the resource industry and society in general. Beyond the basic geometallurgical promise of closer alignment between processing design/strategy and the multivariate 3D spatial characteristics of the mineralisation, this paper discusses the broader implications and ramifications of the emergent geometallurgical approach: enhancing exploration and discovery; improving project development success; achieving sustainability in an industry working with non-renewable resources; in a world of increasingly hard won license to operate, improving the management of potentially harmful by-products and waste materials (with knock on effects for proactive management of closure issues); smarter approaches to energy management and thus optimisation of projects with respect to carbon footprint; and potential to re-value assets and thus realise a strategic advantage in the area of acquisitions, divestments, mergers and take overs. The authors strongly believe that companies that actively engage with the above issues (and ensure that technical efforts in the area of geometallurgy are not isolated from the larger value chain activities of the firm) will be able to exploit the opportunities that consequentially arise. These early adopters will gain first mover advantages. Firms taking the broad view of geometallurgy will have an opportunity to maximise stakeholder value and win greater success than their less insightful competitors.

Abstract-Most large skarn deposits are zoned in both space and time relative to associated intrusions. Zonation occurs on scales from kilometers to micrometers, and reflects infiltrative fluid flow, wallrock reaction, temperature variations, and fluid mixing. The most spectacular examples of skarn zonation usually occur at the skarn-marble contact, where transitions between monomineralic bands can be knife sharp. Other small-scale examples occur in zoned veins and individual mineral crystals. Although, visually striking and scientifically interesting, in mineral exploration these small-scale variations are less useful than deposit- or district-scale zonation. In most skarn systems there is a general zonation pattern of proximal garnet, distal pyroxene, and vesuvianite (or a pyroxenoid such as wollastonite, bustamite, or rhodonite) at the marble front. As well, individual skarn minerals may display systematic color or compositional variations within the larger zonation pattern. Such patterns are reviewed for 14 well-studied examples of Cu, W, Sn, Au, and Zn-Pb skarns. In addition, many deposits have endoskarn or other alteration of the associated intrusion, and recrystallization or other subtle changes have occurred in the surrounding wallrocks. Copper skarns, such as Mines Gaspé in Quebec and Big Gossan in Irian Jaya, have high ratios of garnet:pyroxene and are zoned outward from the intrusion, to garnet, to pyroxene, to massive-sulfide replacement and vein deposits. Garnets in Cu skarn are Fe-rich and change from dark red-brown near the intrusive contact to paler brown, green, or yellow in distal locations. Pyroxenes in Cu skarns are pale and diopsidic near the intrusion, and become darker and more Fe- and Mn-rich away from the intrusion. Tungsten skarns, such as Salau and Costabonne in France and Pine Creek and Garnet Dike in California, have intermediate ratios of garnet:pyroxene, are more extensive vertically and along strike than perpendicular to the intrusive contact, and have zonation patterns commonly complicated by overprinting of metamorphic lithologies. In W skarns, garnet is commonly subcalcic and the pyroxene is Fe-rich, reflecting particularly reducing wallrocks or great depth of formation. Tin skarns, such as Dachang in China and Moina in Australia, also can have subcalcic garnet and Fe-rich pyroxene, but this reduced mineral assemblage typically is due to an association with reduced S-type granites. Tin skarns differ from most other skarn types in having a late greisen stage that may replace earlier Sn-bearing calc-silicate minerals, thus liberating Sn to form cassiterite. Many high-grade Au skarns, such as Hedley in British Columbia and Fortitude in Nevada, have low ratios of garnet:pyroxene and are associated both with reduced plutons and reduced wallrocks. Goldrich zones occur in Fe-rich, pyroxene-dominant, distal skarn. Zn-Pb skarns, such as the Yeonhwa- Ulchin district in Korea and Groundhog in New Mexico, have low ratios of garnet:pyroxene and generally form distal to associated intrusions. These skarns also are zoned from proximal garnet to distal pyroxene and pyroxenoid (bustamite-rhodonite), with significant zones of massive sulfides within and beyond skarn. Manganese enrichment of most mineral phases, particularly pyroxene, is characteristic of distal zones. Fundamental controls on skarn zonation include temperature, depth of formation, composition and oxidation state of associated plutons and wallrocks, and tectonic setting. Most W skarns form at relatively great depth, 5 km to 20 km, with extensive high-temperature metamorphic and metasomatic mineral assemblages. In contrast, most other skarn types are relatively shallow, <10 km and mostly <5 km, with limited, lower temperature metamorphic aureoles. The International Society of Explosives Engineers (ISEE) Standards Committee has recently updated both the Field Practice Guidelines for Blasting Seismographs and the Performance Specifications for Blasting Seismographs. The revisions are the result of public and industry input along with recommendations of the ISEE Blast Vibration and Seismograph Section. The committee is comprised of blasting seismograph manufacturers, users and general interest personnel. On an as needed basis, subject matter experts are enlisted to advise the committee. Three phases of activities are necessary for each revision cycle: request for comment on the existing standard, first draft revision of the standard based on public input, and final draft approval by the ISEE Board of Directors. The ISEE standards revision process will be explained and each standard will be discussed along with the significant revisions from the latest revision cycle.

A mining operation can be identified as demonstrating prudent management when a number of vital characteristics are evident.All risks and opportunities that are critical to the on-going success of the operation have been identified and are being effectively managed. All significant tasks and events are plan driven. All levels of management visibly support the policies of the operation through their attitude, behaviour and actions as well as words. Supporting evidence for required activity and the outcomes is readily available. Improvement mechanisms are working to advance the key business processes. Everyone is working towards satisfying the needs of the stakeholders of the operation. When these characteristics are integrated with the satisfaction of all legislative requirements, all industry codes and optionally all relevant international management system standards then an operation is fulfilling all the requirements of a Due Diligence Process. The majority of mining operations do not show all of these characteristics and therefore unnecessarily suffer from missed profit opportunity and constant cost pressure, less than acceptable safety and health and environmental performance and consequent poor relations with employees, unions and regulators. In these operations the characteristics to be observed are quite different.Serious incidents are occurring with no sign of a rate decrease. The operation lurches from one panic ituation to another. Management are absent in their leadership, but very active in developing rules and enforcement methodologies. The operation has no history. Re-inventing the wheel with employees who come and go at an alarming rate seems to be forever occurring. All efforts are directed at controlling the business outputs with a strong emphasis on blame. Everyone is trying to look busy to avoid the ever-present cost reduction threats. To change to more prudent management utilising a Due Diligence Process is not theoretically difficult. However it does take clear direction, focussed efforts, supporting actions with appropriate tools and perhaps most importantly an internal desire and drive to become such an operation. A Due Diligence Process is about doing the important things that have to be done, providing the understanding of why they are important, demonstrating proof of activity and effectiveness, and leading the way through effective management.

"An Engineering Scale Technology Demonstration (ESTD) unit utilizing the THOR fluidized bed steam reforming technology was built and operated by Hazen Research, Inc. for the purpose of denitrating and solidifying various Department of Energy (DOE) radioactive tank waste surrogates into granular products. The ESTD offered the opportunity to investigate the operational characteristics of two fluidized beds in series to test process system designs such as those for fluidization, feeding, and product collection. Operational characteristics that were evaluated included bed attrition rate, particle growth, and elutriation; and the effects that variations in process parameters (e.g., fluidizing gas flow rate, feed composition, feed injection method, and gas distributor design) had upon these characteristics were observed. Testing of the process systems on this scale allowed for design changes to be made where the cost in time and money were significantly less by comparison to those same modifications being made on the commercial scale.IntroductionFluidized bed steam reforming (FBSR) offers a moderate temperature (620-750°C) continuous method by which various liquid wastes can be processed irrespective of whether they contain organics, nitrates, sulfates/sulfides, chlorides, fluorides, volatile radionuclides or other aqueous components. The FBSR technology has exhibited the potential to process these wastes into either a carbonate or crystalline ceramic (mineral) granular product.Pilot scale testing was performed using the THOR Treatment Technologies, LLC (ITT) FBSR process, as it offered the opportunity to evaluate multiple aspects in an environment more conducive to experimentation. Process changes and system modifications could be made faster and with less cost impact as compared with changes to an assembled commercial plant. These aspects include verification of process chemistry and kinetics, evaluation of materials of construction, equipment sizing and design, and the interactions of the systems. Evaluation of process chemistry allowed for the verification of thermodynamic and kinetic models, and was used in conjunction with these models to improve the database and modeling assumptions. It also allowed for the reevaluation of data from earlier bench scale testing with the opportunity for long-term operations. These long-term effects may include the buildup of one or more elements that results in the formation of eutectics leading to the destabilization of a fluidized bed, or the shift in particle size as a result of attrition or agglomeration. The pilot plant also provided an environment to evaluate materials of construction."

A characteristic property of bituminous coal is that upon being heated the coal becomes plastic, evolves volatile gases, and finally solidifies into coke. This fundamental characteristic is of utmost importance and is utilized in the production of the high-temperature coke upon which the steel industry is so dependent; but from the standpoint of operation in the domestic underfeed stoker this coking tendency seriously interferes with efficient combustion. When the coke formed has too strong a structure, certain difficulties result, such as low rate of burning, slow response to heat demand, and, in extreme cases, extinction of fire. The plastic mass prevents uniform distribution of air through the fuel bed and, with strongly coking coals, large dense pieces of coke are produced which have much less reacting surface than was possessed by the original coal. In both ignition and combustion of solid fuels, the extent of the reacting surface is an accelerating factor. Poor combustion permits a surplus of fuel to accumulate in the furnace because the rate of feed and the rate of combustion are not in equilibrium, and this produces an unbalanced condition detrimental to continued automatic service. In order to bum strongly coking coals satisfactorily in a conventional stoker during the three requisite types of operation—continuous, intermittent and hold-fire, frequent attention is necessary. Domestic stokers are defined by the industry as residential stoker heaters that burn 60 lb. of coal or less per hour. With a few exceptions, these units employ the underfeed principle of combustion in which both air and coal move in the same direction up and through the fuel bed. Domestic combustion equipment has difficulty in meeting the problems presented by the several variations in ash and volatile matter, in ash-clinkering tendencies, in coking properties, and in the particle size of bituminous coals. The work of Bituminous Coal Research Inc. at Battelle Memorial Institute has shown that, of these, coking characteristics and the clinkering tendencies have the greatest effect upon the operation of the conventional clinkering type of stoker. Typical coke formations in a clinkering type of underfeed domestic stoker are illustratcd in Fig. I, which shows (A) the ideal fuel bed obtained with a noncoking or free-burning coal; (B) the type of fuel bed formed with a coal that produces a weak coke; and (C) the type of fuel bed obtained with a strongly coking coal. C is characteristic of the fuel bed developed when the average Pennsylvania bituminous coal is burned in an underfeed stoker of conventional type. It is apparent from these pictures that the formation of coke trees will seriously interfere with the efficient automatic combustion of Pennsylvania bituminous coals.

Political issues and a glaring infrastructure deficiency have retarded the emergence of a strong mining component to the Alaskan economy in recent years. Barriers to orderly mineral development are slowly being removed attendant upon changing political circumstances. Infrastructure development, as an investment avenue as well as a responsibility of the State, is receiving much greater attention than in the past. Alaska of course has a rich and varied mining history going back to the 19th Century. This paper, however, focuses on the mining potential, not the mining heritage of the 49th State. The mining industry is emerging from a nadir in the economic cycle - times during which it was buffeted by unsympathetic administrations and confused and confounded by the protracted land status- conflicts prior to enactment; of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) and other milestone legislation. Today Alaska&apos;s mining industry looks toward a bright and healthy future and, in the process, will become a very important and vital component of the State and national economy.

WHEN I had the honor of receiving an invitation to give the-Institute of Metals Lecture, it occurred to me that it might be of interest to review the advances which have been made in refractories, considering how important these materials of construction are in the carrying out of many metallurgical operations and what a large factor they represent in our costs of production. Frankly, I can claim no recent contact with the refractories industry and what little work I myself have been concerned with has been rather unorthodox in character. However, perhaps in consequence of this, I can approach the review without bias and include some suggestions which may prove stimulating or provocative to some of you, who have a more intimate knowledge of refractories and their uses than I Possess. It is neither possible nor necessary for me to survey the progress of industrial refractories, for this has been so thoroughly undertaken by others1-7 in recent publications. Perhaps the best way to get a broad picture of this progress is to compare the Faraday Society Symposium on Refractory Materials 20 years ago8, containing a report on one of the first attempts at standardized testing, with the American Society for Testing Materials Committee Report of February 1935. Suffice it to say, lest my provocative remarks be misunderstood, that I do appreciate that great advances have been made, particularly by companies that have established their own research laboratories and by universities and cooperative research institutes working for the common weal of groups of manufacturers or for national and international progress. "INTRODUCTION AND OBJECT OF EXPERIMENTAn explosion in and rupture of a gas-tight switch box on an electric loader in a mine located near Pittsburgh indicated that the cause was an internally generated inflammable gas-air mixture. This led to the suspicion that moisture condensation or ""other unusual conditions might have caused a spark or are across the surface of the material and that the heat may have created a carbonized path across the synthetic plastic base which would then conduct a large current with the generation of considerable heat and thermal decomposition of the base materials base in the box which exploded gave every indication that this series of events had taken place, and accordingly it was desired to determine what explosive gases such a decomposition of these insulating materials would produce.ACKNOWNLEDGMENTSThe desirability of making this investigation was suggested to the authors by L. Today, a typical blaster is likely to wear many hats, including, but not limited to, supervisor, risk manager, safety coordinator, explosives engineer, communicator, as well as professional decision maker. Simply put, a blaster in the new millennium is an all encompassing blast site manager. As you know, accidents on the blast site can range from blast crew injuries to blasting incidents resulting from vibration, flyrock, misfires, etc. Not surprising, the incidents can quite often be traced back to direct preventable human action on the blast site. They can, however, frequently be avoided, if responsibly identified early and managed properly by an efficient blast site manager. Your company cannot afford to simply employ blasters; good blast site managers are necessary to produce the safest results possible.

Assessment of the potential for mining induced subsidence and determination of ultimate design requirements for a mining operation should be based on a number of assessment approaches. Although the rock mechanics engineer has a variety of limit equilibrium and numerical modeling tools available for assessment and prediction of subsidence effects, empirical approaches based on precedent experience provide a powerful tool for calibration/verification of analytical models and prediction of subsidence. Three separate analyses approaches have been applied to the assessment of potential subsidence for a proposed block caving mine in eastern Canada. The investigations have included an assessment of documented historical information from previous block cave mining at the site, deterministic analyses using limit equilibrium approaches to assess kinematically possible failure mechanisms, and three-dimensional numerical modeling techniques. Analyses results have been used and compared with precedent experience and documentation of subsidence behavior from previous mining to optimize the subsidence predictions for the proposed mine.

Integrity issues for bored cast-in-situ piles have raised the need for the use of non-destructive tests to verify pile integrity and detect possible anomalies in installed pile sections that could adversely affect their serviceability. Integrity inspections performed after installations are often the most reasonable alternative available to assess the shaft quality. The two most common methods are pulse-echo from a small hand held hammer at the pile top, and cross-hole ultrasonic transmissions along the shaft between parallel sonic pipes. While different in technique, each method has its advantages and limitations. This paper emphasizes more on the degree of accuracy of low-strain pile integrity test by comparing the results with cross-hole sonic logging. Reliable data collection and interpretation by an experienced test engineer will reveal the integrity of the pile. Cross-hole sonic logging and low-strain pile integrity testing were both specified as quality control measures for a metro rail project in India. Both cross-hole sonic logging and low-strain pile integrity testing indicated defects in several bored piles. Also minor imperfections recorded by cross-hole sonic logging were observed in low-strain results. The observations of the two test methods are presented and compared for a better understanding of the importance of low-strain test results for any project. INTRODUCTION Cast-in-situ concrete piles are often chosen as a deep foundation alternative where challenging soil conditions exist. Although quality control measures are almost always taken during the installation of the piles, it is often difficult or impossible to confirm the integrity of the pile at this stage, particularly in wet conditions. Because of the relatively high probability of bored piles having anomalies, quality assurance of each bored pile is essential for each project.

A Seminar to discuss &apos;Reactivity of Line in Steel Making&apos; was held in the auditorium of Iscor&apos;s Headquarters Building in Pretoria on the 5th August, 1971. The Institute organised this Seminar on the occasion of the visit of Dr Obst of the Rheinische Kalkstein Werke GMBH, Wuelfrath, West Germany. The latter is one of the largest lime companies in the world and Dr Obst is in charge of their research laboratory. He and his co-workers have earned a reputation for their research into reactivity of lime in steel making. This work is also of great importance to the steel industry in this country, particularly with the changes which are occurring with the introduction of basic oxygen furnaces. Some 80 persons representing most of the major steel companies attended this Seminar. Dr Obst presented his most interesting paper which he illustrated with projector slides. This paper is printed in full in this journal. This was followed by several contributions and active discussions. The first contribution was made by Dr T. B. Beeton of the Research and Development Department, Iscor. He gave a brief summary of the studies on reactive lime carried out at Iscor since 1968. Their work was particularly related to the selection and definition of the various reactivity tests and the correlation of these with plant results. He demonstrated that the DIN methods, particularly the Din (40°) test, gave the best results and reported that good agreement had been reached between Iscor, Highveld and Northern Lime on future test procedures. Mr B. Lowther of The Northern Lime Company then dealt with problems associated with the production of high reactive lime. The rotary kilns at The Northern Lime plant at Lime Acres are particularly suitable for the production of high-reactive lime, because this type of kiln lends itself to accurate control of temperatures and retention times. Several problems, however, exist. Because of the long haul distances and the deterioration of reactive lime by absorption of CO2 and water, high reactive lime is not suitable for most customers. To constantly be changing kiln conditions to produce relatively small quantities of high-reactive lime, therefore, causes problems. Highveld Steel at present is the only company requiring high-reactive lime and a satisfactory product is now being produced at a cost because kiln capacity is reduced and fuel costs are higher. Dr P. R. Jochens, of the National Institute for Metallurgy then submitted data to show how the reactivity of soft burnt reactive lime deteriorated due to long railage hauls. Detailed sampling of trucks had been carried out leaving the lime works and on receipt at Highveld and it was demonstrated that there was deterioration in the top layers of the truck. This top layer protected the balance of the lime which is still in good condition on arrival at Highveld. Exposure to atmosphere by further handling and storage into the bunkers at Highveld, however, resulted in further severe deterioration in the lime reactivity and the lime when finally fed to the Basic Oxygen Furnace is reduced to one third to one quarter of the original reactivity value. The same deterioration does not occur with normal run of kiln lime, which is burnt harder, but still has a satisfactory reactivity for most purposes. Mr A. A. Hejja of the Department of Metallurgy, Witwatersrand University then made a contribution on the metallurgical aspects of the use of lime of different reactivities in the Basic Oxygen Furnace and the effect on desulphurization efficiencies. He gave a wealth of data on actual tests which had been carried out and came up with the surprising conclusion that the deterioration of high-reactive lime due to transport did not have as serious an effect on the efficiency of desulphurization as one would have expected. The efficiency was good provided high-reactive lime in the first instance had been produced, irrespective of whether it had deteriorated thereafter. Poor efficiency was obtained only when the lime in the first instance was produced in an unreactive form. The temperature rise in the Basic Oxygen Furnace also has a definite effect. If lime is introduced when the temperature is too high, soft burnt reactive lime becomes hard burnt and unreactive before it can dissolve in the slag. Use of ferromanganese slag assists dissolution of lime. There was a great deal of discussion following these contributions. Particular interest was expres8ed in the special lime described by Dr Obst. This consists of a mixture of fine lime which is premixed with fluxes and either briquetted or pelletised. The question of injecting finely ground lime as an alternative was also discussed. Both these systems eliminate the necessity for highly reactive lime. With smaller lime particles, larger surfaces are exposed thereby ensuring more rapid dissolution in the molten slag. The discussions generally were lively and informative and all present derived benefit from learning of the experiences of others. The valuable contribution made by our German visitor, Dr Obst, was particularly appreciated. The instantaneous English-German translation service which was provided, greatly facilitated discussions.

ATHOUGH flotation has been a commercial process for over twenty years, the last two years have witnessed a sudden and phenomenal increase in our knowledge of how to separate minerals heretofore not considered amenable to flotation at all. As remarked by Professor Locke in the January issue. "Either commercial or laboratory flotation is reported on zircon, ilmenite, carnotite, kyanite, scheelite, chromite, fluorite, feldspar, cassiterite, wolframite, barite, and clay. Attractive patents on soap flotation are U. S. Nos. 2,000,656 and 2,040.187. A survey by Ralston in the February E. & M. J. adds many other minerals to this impressive list. The simple but pregnant fact is that any mineral can be coated, directly or indirectly, with a water-repellent coating, and since this is true, it follows that any mineral can be floated. Fundamentally, this is no new discovery, where, for instance, is the mineral that cannot he washed from a pair of dirty hands by means of soap and water, given the absence of refractory greases or oils which would have no proper place in flotation ?

In Australia and New Zealand, the &apos;Australasian Code for Reporting of Identified Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves&apos;, which was released by industry in 1989, is operating successfully in a co-operative approach between industry and regulatory authorities. Similar codes or guidelines exist or are under development in the United States of America, Canada, the United Kingdom and South Africa, although the regulatory backing given to the Australasian Code is unique. International standard definitions for Mineral Resources and Reserves, and for categories of Resources and Reserves, have been under development by the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions since 1994 and have already stimulated considerable convergence of definitions and reporting standards in participating countries. It is hoped that agreement on this international standard for public reporting by mining companies will be reached within the next two years, and it is expected that adoption of the standard will result in a higher and more uniform quality of reporting worldwide, with a consequently greater interest on the part of the general public and financiers in investing in the mining industry.
