Of the world's total production of gold the largest proportion comes from the more regularly consistent ore bodies, but in the aggregate an important part comes from those which are often irregular, uncertain and small. These smaller ore bodies are often high in grade and, as the capital required to work them is not large, they appeal to people seeking a quick and profitable return for a small outlay.These small mining concerns cannot afford detailed geological and petrological investigations and mapping, so they are very often dependent on local knowledge and experience which admittedly may be of really great value.Nevertheless the absence of skilled guidance may not only cause good opportunities for intelligent exploration to be lost, but discourage the seach for other ore bodies.lVIining engineers in the course of their travels in the examination of mines often come across such cases and also others where problems of finding lost ore bodies have been solved by the man on the spot. As records of cases are valuable and useful additions to the knowledge of ore occurrences, the writer now proposes to describe one such case coming under his observation in recent years.It is that of a small mine, known as the Idaho, at the southern end of the famous "Golden Mile" at Kalgoorlie (see Fig. 1). This mine has been a small and very erratic producer ever since it was abandoned by an English company which owned it forty years ago. The prediction and assessment of the reactivity of acid mine tailings has been a subject of numerous studies. The conventional approaches such as sulfur content, pH, net acid generating capacity and conductivity are used for assessing reactivity of the tailings. In this paper a new non-invasive Impedance Spectroscopy (IS) technique is used for the determination of reactivity and acid mine potential of tailings. This technique is also used to establish the long term stability and leaching propensity of the tailings agglomerated with alkaline binders.

Over the past few years the rising production costs, shortage of skilled labor, and increased use of lower grade ore bodies have all added justification for the use of on-stream analysis. A rise in the number of on-stream units indicates that this type of assay is now being accepted as a necessity. On-stream analysis is a much more rapid means of obtaining true assays of a flowing product when compared to wet chemistry or "grab" samples dried, briquetted and assayed by x-ray. In contrast, on-stream analysis uses real time samples assayed every 30 seconds while each stream is assayed every 5 to 15 minutes. It is very important not only to know that a change has occurred in the process, but to know what caused the change and how to correct for the change. For example, in a tailing sample the elements of interest comprise between 1% and 10% of the sample. The remainder is water and gangue. Previously the gangue was not assayed nor were the low atomic number elements used for corrections. In addition to the demand for higher accuracies some concentrators were being penalized for excessive Ca or in some cases 5i in their concentrates. This penalty was being imposed by the smelter in order that they could better cope with pollution problems and prolong the life of their furnaces. But until Ca, 5i, and S are measured on-line, nothing can be done about their control. By accurately measuring these light elements on-line, a complete assay is obtained of the total sample providing improved accuracy for the important products. The justification for complete accuracy assays is now even more obvious because they are possible at very 1ittle increased cost and at no increase in analytical time.

Mine operators and managers for a number of years have known that the maintenance of health among the workers has an appreciable financial value, In order to maintain the health, it has been found ne cessery to imow; 1. The health hazards existing in the industry as a whole and the specific hazard in the individual mine. 2. The physical condition of applicants for employment as well as that of the old employees. This can be determined only by systematic physical examination of all applicants and of regular employees at intervals of at least once a year thereafter. 3. All cases of sickness that occur among the workers. No operator or manager, or personnel, medical, or safety organization can control or prevent sickness without knowing where, when, and under what conditions the sickness actually occurs. In order to obtain information as to the hazards of industry, investigations have been and are being made of the effects of the condi- tions both in the field under usual working practices and in the laboratory. In the field several factors are generally present which affect the health. The effect of these factors may be determined by studying each of them separately in the laboratory. However, both the field and the laboratory studies are limited in value in that such studies usually have been made over a comparatively short period. While we have some information as to their immediate effect, we do not know to what extent extreme heat, humidity, the presence of dust or other health hazards are the cause of disability. Mortality statistics are probably the most easily available indices as to the hazards of industry. As an example, a study of such statistics among coal miners of Indiana shows a marked increase in the death rate in 1918.

Modifications of the conventional method of preparing ductile vanadium metal by calcium reduction of V2 05 in a bomb were explored for clues to a more economical procedure . The modifications examined included ( 1 ) omitting the gas purge of the bomb ordinarily used for eliminating atmospheric nitrogen , (2 ) using low- grade vanadium feed materials , ( 3 ) using alternative reductants , such as aluminum , magnesium , and silicon , and reductant mixtures , and ( 4 ) bomb refining of aluminothermic metal produced in open- vessel reductions . The most promising modification appeared to be bomb refining , using calcium to purify vanadium metal -- of low aluminum but high oxygen content-- prepared by open- vessel aluminothermic reduction of vanadium pentoxide .

A compressor and utility station, which is believed to be one of the largest mobile units of this type ever constructed, was placed in operation at the Bureau of Mines experimental oil-shale mine near Rifle, Colo., during. 1949. This mobile unit mounts two 770-cubic-feet-per-minute air compressors, a 2,500-gallon water tank, and a 200-cubic-foot air receiver. The mobile base of the unit is a 30-ton trailer 30-feet long and 12-feet wide. Prior to the construction of this unit, compressed air was supplied to underground workings through pipe lines connecting with a stationary compressor plant on the surface. The power consumed in supplying compressed air to underground drilling crews was 0.531 kw.-hr. per ton of shale broken. Use of the mobile unit has cut this figure to 0.421 kw.-hr. per ton of shale broken and, more important, has eliminated the cost of installing and maintaining underground air and water lines.

THE " Tar-Sands." is the name which has been given to the extensive horizontal deposit of fine Cretaceous sand, blackened by tarry petroleum, which forms the banks of the last or lowest 130 miles of the Athabasca river before it terminates in Athabasca lake. The Cretaceous strata, to which these sands belong, extend northwesterly from Dakota all the way to this lake and for 500 miles beyond it. The Athabasca river forms the uppermost section of the Athabasca-Mackenzie, one of the great rivers of the world. It rises on the Pacific side of the Rocky mountains, westward of Edmonton, and flows north of east to a point called Athabasca. Landing, 100 miles north of Edmonton, where it turns northward and runs about 280 miles before it falls into the west end of Athabasca lake. The section of this river-system which discharges the lake just named into Great Slave lake, is called Slave river, and below the latter lake it becomes the Mackenzie river. Along the section of 280 miles of the Athabasca river above mentioned, the Cretaceous strata consist of bluish-gray and drab-gray marls, on top, from Athabasca Landing to Drowned rapid, 110 miles down stream; then heavily bedded gray sandstones, 225 ft. in greatest thickness, underlying these, form the banks for about 40 miles further. The strata appear to be horizontal, but they really clip very slightly to the southward. At Drowned rapid, we see the first of the tar-sands resting on almost horizontal beds of bluish-gray limestone of Devonian age. In some places the limestone is associated with shaly or marly bands. Notwithstanding the great hiatus between the two series, the horizontal tar-sands lie conformably upon the almost level upper beds of the limestone wherever the two formations are seen together, all along the river, throughout a

Copper, nickel, zinc and other ?penalty? metals are found with gold together in nature, and have a similar chemical affinity for cyanide used in leaching operations4. As a result, solutions that come from the heap leach pads contain a significant concentration of penalty metals along with the desired gold. In solution, gold and cyanide form the complex Au(CN)2- that is readily adsorbed onto activated carbon. Penalty metals as individual metal ions also load onto activated carbon and, depending on the concentration of cyanide and the pH of the solution, can form various cyanide complexes. Some of these complexes can also load onto carbon while some are significantly inhibited from loading. Copper, for example, can form the dicyanide complex Cu(CN)2-, the tricyanide complex Cu(CN)32-, and the tetracyanide complex Cu(CN)43-. At a low pH and a low concentration of cyanide, the dicyanide complex predominates. At a higher pH and a higher concentration of cyanide, the tetracyanide complex predominates. Without excess cyanide, however, individual copper ions can remain present. Activated carbon is used in gold extraction because it is highly selective for gold and less so for other metals, such as copper3. However, copper has the ability to adsorb (?load?) onto activated carbon and block the adsorption of gold when it is in the dicyanide form and in a high enough concentration. When copper is in the tetracyanide form, copper loading is significantly inhibited, allowing for the maximum gold recovery. In order to ensure the tetracyanide complex is formed, a combination of both available cyanide and elevated pH must be present. In the South Area of Newmont Mining Corporation?s Gold Quarry mine in Carlin, Nevada, copper and nickel loading becomes a problem when certain acid generating zones of the heap are leached. Copper, nickel, zinc and other penalty metals become leachable and the lower pH uses up more of the cyanide and creates carbon loading conditions for the metals. This decreases the carbon?s ability to extract the gold from solution, decreasing the recovery and increasing the concentration of gold in the barren solution that leaves the carbon columns. In this study, operational data from March through to May of 2007 is presented to show how Newmont developed a quick fix to lower pH and elevated metal concentrations that were causing low gold loadings on activated carbon at their South Area Leach (SAL) heap leach operations. Laboratory tested were also conducted to examine the chemical kinetics of metal loading and the individual effects of increased cyanide concentrations. THEORY Copper I ions form four different complexes with cyanide in solution: the monocyanide species CuCN, the dicyanide species Cu(CN)2-, the tricyanide species Cu(CN)32-, and the tetracyanide species Cu(CN)43-. The species are formed from the following reactions: [Cu)(?+-+ K1 (1) Cu ß2 (2) --+?+23)(3CNCuCNCu ß3 (3) --+?+34)(4CNCuCNCu ß4 (4) ] where K1 equals 1019.50, ß2 equals 1024.03, ß3 equals 1028.65, and ß4 equals 1030.35. Along with these complexing reactions, hydrogen cyanide and water also dissociate in solution, as per the following reactions: [H?+-+ KH (5) OHOHH2?+-+ KW (6)] where KH has a value of 109.24 and KW has a 1014 value2. These six chemical equations compete with each other, with domination of one over the others dependent on the CN- and H+ concentrations. Each complex also has different properties when it comes to its loading behavior on activated carbon. The dicyanide copper complex and the monocyanide copper complex have an affinity for adsorption onto activated carbon that is greater than the affinity of gold cyanide for adsorption. They also have a lower solubility in water, which enhances adsorption. The tricyanide copper complex and the tetracyanide copper complex are water soluble and have an affinity for loading adsorption on activated carbon that is less than the affinity of gold cyanide for loading adsorption1. There are three prime reasons for this phenomenon. First, the extra cyanides mask the metal ion more, which blocks the main adsorption characteristic of the complex. Second, the complexes are also larger, making it harder to physically fit into the active sites on the carbon. This helps make the latter two complexes kinetically inhibited from adsorption, freeing carbon active site to load with gold cyanide complexes. Third, it is also important to consider the expressions of the mass and charge balance. These balances describe all the overall concentration of copper and cyanide in solution, as well as marking overall charges of the ions in solution4. This is important because significantly changing the charge from positive/neutral to more negative is another reason for activated carbon to reject adsorbing the higher cyanide complexes. The speciation of copper and other penalty metal cyanide complexes in solution is dependent on the pH. At lower pH values, increased hydrogen ions (H+) can out-compete metals for cyanide ions. Lower free cyanide in the system leads to the lower cyanide species of copper cyanide predominating, with a noticeable concentration of the free metal, monocyanide and dicyanide species of copper cyanide. At higher pH values, hydrogen ions are significantly reduced, reducing the kinetics of HCN formation. More free cyanide remains in the system, allowing for more complexing. With this higher amount of cyanide in the system, the tetracyanide species of copper cyanide predominates, also with a noticeable concentration of the tricyanide species of copper cyanide. Major gaps in understanding hydro- thermal systems remain after a century of studying fossil ore deposits and active geothermal areas. The periodically rejuvenated concept of "stacking" ore deposit types has never been verified by a continuous sample. Basal and marginal regions of both “fossil" and "active" hydrothermal systems normally lie beyond the limits of economic exploration, remaining inadequately exposed. Incomplete scientific under- standing of he vertical transitions clearly limits the efficacy of exploration programs for hydrothermal ores of all types. The Continental Scientific Drilling Committee's (CSDC) Panel on Mineral Resources has defined dedicated research objectives and add-on experiments to industry or government drill holes of opportunity.

The typical Vibrocompaction projects undertaken in the UAE are on reclaimed Sands. These Sands which are predominantly the crushable, calcareous, carbonate sands found locally as opposed to the more common quartz or silica sands that are featured in most design literature. The famous reclamations such as the iconic Palm Jumeirah in Dubai, often have specification for mitigation of liquefaction induced settlements, bearing capacity increases and total and differential settlement requirements. Often these performance targets are achieved by the means of achieving a particular relative density that are generally measured by a defined Cone Penetration Test, CPT targeting values of cone resistance (Qc), MPa at respective depth zones. In this paper some case studies are presented, where soil suitability for deep compaction by vibratory methods was firstly assessed for suitability using the Massarsch, 1991 compactability chart prior to the application of vibrocompaction and its subsequent evaluation. One such project named the Island Development required 17 to 23m depth of penetration only to treat the lower 5 to 6m of sand above rockhead as eventually the top 15m of sand will be further excavated to allow for the construction of basement. The paper will present pre and post CPT results, the results of initial site calibration trials and evaluation of the completed works.

Overland belt conveyors often use vertically guided counterweight take-ups or horizontally tensioned carriages to maintain belt tension. In the event of belt or wire rope failure, these systems can release significant stored energy, creating high-impact forces that risk structural damage and personnel injury. This paper reviews current safety arresting technologies and presents a calculation methodology for estimating impact velocity, energy absorption requirements, and stroke limitations. Worked examples illustrate the selection process for appropriate arrestor types under different design constraints. The study emphasizes early integration of safety devices to minimize structural loads, avoid costly retrofits, and enhance operational reliability. Implementing robust arrestor systems improves safety and reduces downtime in bulk material handling environments.

Laboratory investigations were carried out to determine the resistance coefficient of the flow through beds irrigated with wetting and non-wetting liquids. A formula was obtained which may be used to evaluate the resistance of the irrigated packing. Quantitative investigations were also carried out on operating furnaces at Magnitogorsk. Continuous measurements of the lower pressure drops were made under different furnace conditions. Pressures were measured in the tuyere space and the bosh region. A significant transient behaviour of the pressure drop was observed in the irrigated zone as a function of the accumulation of the liquid phase in the bosh region as smelting progressed. Additionally, transient processes were also investigated in the upper furnace zones. The basic cause of the transient behaviour was shown to be the irregularity of burden descent caused by the casting cycle. It was shown that the rate of burden descent between consecutive casts reflects fairly accurately the accumulation and drainage of the liquid products as a result of which heat transfer, reduction and aerodynamic processes assume transient character. In practically all cases of casting a decrease in blast pressure and that over the furnace height of 0.2 kg/cm2 was observed. The analyses of radial gas composition at the stock line showed that compositional variations connected with the casting cycle are most pronounced in the central and peripheral regions, whilst in the intermediate regions the conditions are relatively stable. Calculations show that as casting progresses there is a decrease in the gas flow rate at the periphery and an increase in the centre of the furnace. The transient nature of the aerodynamic processes in packings revealed the existence of an appreciable reserve capacity. Elimination of transience was tested on the furnace at Magnitogorsk and improved operating and economical furnace parameters obtained.

O presente trabalho tem por objetivo mostrar os benefícios do Stove Oxygen Enrichment (SOE), ou seja, o enriquecimento do ar de combustão (comburente) dos fornos regeneradores de altos fornos, visando atingir economias de combustível. O enriquecimento do comburente permite que combustíveis de menor poder calorífico sejam utilizados em substituição de combustíveis de maior poder calorífico, tornando-se disponíveis para aplicações mais nobres dentro da siderúrgica, como a laminação e a geração de energia elétrica. Outro aspecto importante é a redução da queima de combustíveis que antes eram descartados no flare, reduzindo as emissões de carbono para a atmosfera.

The lead .smelter at Cominco's operations at Trail, B.C. has been undergoing. a modernization program since 1986. In that year a contract agreement was reached with German-based Lurgi GmbH which allows Cominco to construct and operate a lead smelter using Lurgi's QSL process. Cominco Engineering Services Ltd. (CESL), a subsidiary of Cominco Ltd., was contracted to provide project management, engineering, procurement and construction management? services for the project. The new smelter replaces the existing sinter-blast furnace plant ?and will have a capacity of up to 1601000 tonnes per year of refined lead. This new smelting proc.ess results in significant operating cost reductions and major environmental .improvements. Start-up of the new plant is scheduled for the fall of 1989. The metallurgy and the operating parameters, important to the design of the new smelter, are described together with projected deportments of lead, zinc, silver and minor metals. A plant description, will be given for the following major areas that make up the modernization project: the pressure filter operation for the preparation of ,zinc leach residues feed material, the QSL reactor and boiler itself, together with its feed system and process gas treatment, and the drossing plant with a new continuous drossing furnace and oxygen softening and thallium removal. Slag from the QSL reactor will be treated in existing slag furnaces until a subsequent second phase of the modernization is completed in the 1990s.

This final report summarizes the prototype development and testing of an air curtain respirotory protective device under Bureau of Mines Contract HO122087. The air curtain respiratory protective device, as part of a miner?s hat, provides protection for the underground mining machine operator against inhalation of dangerous amounts of respirable coal dust. Major components of the air curtain respiratory protective device are: 1) a modified miner hat incorporating an air curtain jet manifold from which the protective air curtain emanates, 2) a motor blower which supplies the air for the air curtain, 3) a filter element to remove the particulate material from the air used for the air curtain, and 4) the hoses and coupling used to duct the filtered air from the motor blower to the modified miner's hat.

Today, the employment of the modern hammer drill, using hollow steel, with air or water to expel the cuttings from the drill hole, is the rule rather than the exception in practically all rock-drilling operations. There is considerable carelessness in the matter of keeping the hole in the drill steel properly opened. Plugged steels wholly or partially, prevent proper operation of the drill, whereby drilling speed is retarded, water tubes are bent or broken, and time is lost in tink-ering, or, as often happens, the drilling gang is idle while someone makes a trip to the shop after another drill steel or water tube. To relieve this condition, the Ingersoll-Rand Company has developed, as an auxiliary to the Leyner sharpener, a new device-the Leyner shank and bit punch.

"Pile foundation driveability is a function of several variables such as subsurface characteristics, hammer type, hammer efficiency, pile type, and plugging conditions. One important phenomenon occurring during pile driving, and yet not well documented and published, is the friction fatigue, where a reduction of shaft resistance is observed as the pile is driven to greater embedment. This paper introduces current soil models developed for the assessment of friction fatigue, and further presents a comparison between predicted driveability obtained from Wave Equation Analysis Program (GRLWEAP) and field driving records. From a literature survey, and review of technical articles, a widely-used soil model known as AH-01 has been selected to analyze the friction fatigue concept. Using a WEAP software, two driveability analysis were completed using the standard approach with setup factors, and adapting the AH-01 model into the WEAP input file. Driveability predictions were compared to the driving records corresponding to a 1676-mm x 44- mm open-ended pipe pile with a total and embedment lengths of 180-m and 119-m, respectively. Results from analyses and the comparison presented in this paper provide further information regarding existing methods for the incorporation of the friction fatigue concept to the driveability analyses, and contributes to a better prediction of driveability of open-ended pipe piles. IntroductionDynamic measurements during pile installation provide more dependable information as compared to results obtained from predictive models used for design. Despite uncertainties associated with a specific project site and foundation type, measured data provides a reliable understanding of the soil resistance and its distribution throughout the length of the pile. Back-calculations or back-analyses based on a series of measured data from a pile driving process could help to obtain reliable models to better predict events related to pile installation process in spite of all variability related to fitted models. One of the widely-used analysis regarding pile driving during the design phase is the “driveability analysis” where capacity, blowcounts, maximum stresses in the pile element, and transferred energy from the hammer to the pile element are predicted using mathematical models along with a software. Such analysis requires relevant information regarding soil, pile, and hammer properties combined with a deep understanding of the level of impact each one of these properties could have on the analysis."

The Chairman.—Mr. Earle Smith has kindly offered to make some remarks in connection with segregation in the product, Mr. Smith: E. C. Smith,* Cleveland, Ohio—I will start this Off by a story oF the code days of the American Iron and Steel Institute. In those days, Republic did not have a big strip mill, and the question came up of the check analysis of rimmed steel. I suggested that they let me be the chairman of the Committee on Accumulating the Information on the Variation of the Composition of the Ingots of Rimmed Steel. Somebody wanted to know why I wanted to be the chairman. I said, "we don't make any of the big ingots of rimmed steel, and no matter who makes them they are so bad that you don't dare publish the information. So if 1 collect it and hide it you can't charge me with having done anything that really disrupted the commercial situation." So, everybody furnished me with a rather complete story as to the horrible variations in big rimmed ingots. I took it out to my house and put it away, and it is still there. Now, segregation in the big ingot is no longer an "academic " matter as far as I am concerned. I am in a situation like that of the German who was told in 1956 about the coming war. He said: "until it is your throat that is going to be cut, you don't pay any attention to what is happening to the otherman." 'That is the way with the problem that we have in front of us. Recently I have been told that the 'Omptroller was questioning the payment for certain articles of stamped steel that had been made from rimmed steel, because upon check analysis of the rimmed steel it had been determined that these stamped articles were nut within the compositions that were included in the specification, and therefore he as the camptroller had no alternative. It was not meeting the specification; therefore, no payment. So I I say to all of you: You can very seriously consider this matter of segregation now and on into the future on the basis of the fact that it is actually going to cost your companies, which are making these products, money unless there is some new idea about the infallibility of quantitative , chemists who analyze some of these products or lawyers who read specifications, I don't know which man is going to be the major factor in the future. if the National Bureau of Standards could in some way show the specification writers the variation between good chemists analyzing for That they expect to be umpire eel. the writers would certainly realize that some of the to to which we have calmly signed our names as being O.K. are— well, as one man said to me, they might be filled by the devil, and they certainly could be filled by the Lord, but they could not he me by mankind. I would like to inject two or three things into a segregation study which I Want you to think about, because 1 would be a little surprised if there is very much discussion of them, In the first place, we generslly make steel in the United States in the basic open hearth, and I do not think there has bee,, nearly enough consideration given to segregation German the bath before it moves into the ladle. There is a wide difference of opinion among rifle experts in the matter of barrel steel, and the relative importance to the life of the barrel of the steel's composition, heat treatment, structure, and physical properties. In order to promote discussion, which it is hoped may' lead to the discovery of the source of some of the traditional beliefs on the subject, the results of some tests are presented here, with data on heat treating, physical tests, and erosion. The detailed metallographic study of this steel is given in another paper.l The conclusions from these tests should be capable of wider application than their direct bearing on the barrel-steel problem. The Government specifications for barrel steel for model 1903 rifle (Springfield) call for carbon 0.50 to 0.60 per cent., manganese 1.00 to 1.29 per cent., silicon under 0.25 per cent., sulfur under 0.06 per cent., phosphorus under 0.08 per cent. The minimum physical requirements are: Tensile strength, 110,000 lb. per sq. in. (7733 kg. per sq. cm.); yield point, 75,000 lb. per sq. in (5472 kg. per sq. cm.); elongation, 20 per cent.; reduction of area, 45 per cent. Material fulfilling these requirements gives practically no failures when proof-fired, with charge of 70,000 lb. per sq. in. pressure, which is 40 per cent. in excess of the service charge. The turning and drilling operations show up any seams or laps such as accidentally occur even in the best heats of open-hearth steel, so that faulty stock is practically all eliminated before proof-firing. These physical requirements are met either by rolling billets at a proper temperature down to the form of tapered barrel blanks or by heat treating bars that have been upset to cnlarge the breech section. The transformation temperature of this steel, on heating, is around 1350" F. (732' C.), varying somewhat with the composition and the rate of heating. The actual treatment of the barrel blanks, as carried out by different manufacturers, gives four kinds of barrels, which will be called A, B, C, and D, for convenience.
