"The mine ventilation system plays an important role in mitigating human exposure to diesel particulate emissions (DPM), exhaust gases and heat in underground mines. The mine’s secondary ventilation systems are critical for diluting contaminants when working at the face of a heading. To improve these systems it is important to understand and visualise the localised air flow profiles. We have considered an approach that includes both tracer gas measurement–modelling to analyse this complex flow behaviour in a heading. The use of tracer gas enables reliable measurements of flow behaviour and differentiation between the contributions of various contaminant sources including DPM. A pilot study was conducted to demonstrate how tracer gas can be used to directly measure the effectiveness of ventilation dilution in a heading during shotcrete activity. This activity is considered to be one of the more challenging areas for diesel exhaust exposure management. Exposure sources include the diesel engine of the spraying equipment (Spraymech) and concrete agitator truck (Agi) that supplies the shotcrete. During operation both the Spraymech and Agi operators are located outside the equipment’s air-conditioned cabins and both are exposed to diesel exhaust. In the pilot study tracer gas was injected directly into the Spraymech exhaust stream. This allowed thorough mixing, ensuring the tracer gas was able to track exhaust gases and particulates released to the heading. The release was repeated at three different headings with varying degrees of secondary ventilation controls. The study showed that small changes to the secondary ventilation system can significantly impact the contaminant concentration. It also demonstrated that tracer gas can be used to isolate different contaminant sources. The intent is to use this technique in a more comprehensive study to develop best practice guidelines for secondary ventilation installations. This report describes Phase I of the project --Development of a Mechanized Scaler --performed by Battelle, Pacific Northwest Laboratories for the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The objectives of Phase I were to 1) assess the needs of the industry as related to mechanized scaling; 2) conceive, evaluate and select mechanized scaler concepts; and 3) prepare preliminary designs of the selected machine concepts. To assess the scaling needs of the industry, we reviewed both U.S. and foreign literature, evaluated U.S. scaling accident statistics, reviewed existing mechanized scaling equipment, performed a series of mine visits and telephone interviews with mine operators, and assessed the applicability of a loose-rock detection system. The literature review identified over 25 scaler-related articles. However, little of the information could be used directly in the conceptualization and design portions of the project. Three articles did supply information on a number of machines used in Europe, along with statistics describing their effect on mine safety. For example, the French reported a 50% reduction in the total number of scaling-related accidents and a full 80% reduction in the number of lost-time injuries in the Lorraine mining district.

There is increasing demand for geotechnical contractors to commit to carbon reduction, net zero or science based targets. A lot of focus has therefore been placed on using low carbon materials and low emission rigs. However, whilst these are ways to help reduce carbon, there is a need to look beyond just substituting materials and fuels to meet net zero. Using the IEMA carbon hierarchy, there is a need to first look at eliminating and reducing emissions, before considering substitute materials. For example, in geotechnical designs, this may mean considering using ground improvement or reducing the number of piles, before considering using low carbon cements. Equally, for remaining emissions, this hierarchy means considering carbon negative products to offset emissions, such as ground source heat pumps. This hierarchy can also be applied throughout geotechnical contractor organisations. For example, considering video conferencing for meetings, before considering public transport or using an electric vehicle. This article explores the carbon hierarchy and how it can be applied to all areas of a geotechnical contractor’s business. Only through embedding this hierarchy across the business can geotechnical contractors achieve the step change required to meet net zero.

A group of mining men attending a recent workshop on "Analysis and Control in the Canadian Minerals Industry" issued, among others, the following statement: "Slurry flow measurement is considered to be one of the most inaccurate in the industry. A special program should be launched to encourage development." In response, this paper starts off the program with an investigation of the principles and the conventional practice of slurry flow measurement and identifies weaknesses which cause inaccuracies. Then it follows with descriptions of nonconventional systems in use at various locations and comments on their degree of success. The paper concludes that relatively simple methods, which it describes, can be applied to obtain an accurate slurry flow measurement.

Managing heat stress on Australian mine sites is a complex and enduring challenge due to the combined and variable contribution of environmental conditions, physical activities, and protective equipment. Inappropriately managed, heat stress can place significant physical strain on workers, leading to serious and chronic health issues. Additionally, excessive heat stress can dramatically reduce productivity, with 30 per cent of workers reporting a loss of productivity due to occupational heat strain. In Australia, due to increased absenteeism and reduced work performance, heat strain is estimated to have an annual economic burden of over $8 billion.

Associated Minerals Consolidated Limited (AMC) is constructing a 112,500 tonne/yr synthetic rutile plant at Narngulu, near Geraldton in Western Australia. Design of the plant is based on the technology developed by AMC and utilised in its two existing plants at Capel in Western Australia. Ilmenite Feedstock for the plant will be sourced from AMC's mine at Eneabba and coal obtained from the Collie deposits. The plant is scheduled to come on stream in the second quarter of calendar 1987. The rationale of the decision to construct the Narngulu plant is examined against the background of the world market for high-Ti02 content feedstocks. Also provided is a detailed description of the plant and an examination of the technology used in process Design.

The East Tintic district in central Utah has produced ores of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc valued at more than $120,000,000. All of this ore has been produced from blind ore bodies in Paleozoic sedimentary rocks that are concealed beneath hydrothermally altered volcanic rocks and cut by intrusive bodies of Eocene age. The Paleozoic rocks, which range in age from Early Cambrian to Mississippian form the core and limbs of a large, northtrending asymmetric anticline that is cut by low-angle thrust faults, high-angle transcurrent faults, mineralized fissures and faults, and normal faults that are both older and younger than the mineralized fissures. The ore bodies generally may be grouped into two classes: ( 1) massive replacement bodies that are rich in silver, lead, zinc and manganese and (2) fissure veins that are valuable primarily for their content of gold, copper, and silver. The replacement ore bodies are localized chiefly in the Middle Limestone Member of the Ophir Formation of Middle Cambrian age where it has been thrust-faulted against older or younger rocks and cut by northeast-trending mineralized fissure zones. The fissure veins primarily are productive only in the Lower Cambrian Tintic Quartzite. Extensive lowgrade deposits of lead-zinc-silver ore recently have been discovered in Devonian carbonate rocks in the Lower plate of the East Tintic thrust fault but as yet are unevaluated. The principal guides to ore include: ( 1) intersections of northeast-trending fissures and crossbreaking faults that brecciate the carbonate rocks; (2) zones of late-stage pyritic, calcitic, and sericitic alteration in the lavas; ( 3) primary geochemical anomalies in the altered rocks; and ( 4) mineral zoning patterns of the known ore bodies. The present development of the Burgin mine would seem to assure the continued productivity of the district for at least a decade.

What exactly does clean coal mean? Mining coal creates dust and releases methane gas. And burning coal liberates CO2 and emits particulates, including SO2 and NOx. Coal creates wastes that are often stored in unsightly and potentially dangerous slag heaps and lagoons. When clean coal technology is discussed, it sometimes seems that creating modern or ?ultra super critical? coal-fired power stations is presented as the main or even the only answer. However, there may be a more holistic approach. Using the energy potential of coal is always going to have environmental impacts. Some of these will be negative. But the need to secure future energy resources demands that society tackle these negative issues and find ways to minimize and offset them.

A solar facility in the western United States was sited within the footprint of a dry lakebed, or playa, with construction completed in 2016. Conventional geotechnical studies were performed prior to design and no unusual conditions or features were noted. The facility has unexpectedly experienced several episodes of ground fissure development after moderate to heavy rainfall events, the first somewhat isolated event occurring shortly after the facility was placed into service. Subsequent fissures developed in 2017 and 2022, with severity of the fissures and their impacts increasing each time, with the final episode resulting in fissure depths on the order of 30 feet. Initial fissure events primarily impacted site access. The 2022 event impacted site access, infrastructure, and solar array pile foundations. Various remedial measures were implemented to address the fissures, including CLSM backfill (2016) and the injection of epoxy-based urethane foam (2017). Prior to developing repairs for the 2022 event, additional studies were performed to evaluate the fissure formation including geophysical exploration, review of historical topography and aerial photographs, hydrologic modeling, and research. Mitigation of the 2022 feature included backfilling with granular backfill and sand-cement slurry and constructing surface water conveyance features to direct surface runoff away from the fissure.

Combustion synthesis or self propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) reaction systems are discussed with respect to thermodynamics and kinetics. In particular, tile effect of the process parameters, ego particle size, AHf, ignition and combustion temperatures on these self sustaining reactions is discussed. Combustion theory is used to investigate the effect of the overall activation energy of the SHS reaction on the combustion front propagation rate and in obtaining a clearer understanding of the transition from stable to unstable propagation. Finally, examples of the application of combustion synthesis to advanced materials processes are made, in particular the synthesis of Ni-Ti -X intermetallic shape memory alloys, TiC-Al2O3 and ZrB2 ?Al2O3 ceramic composite materials.

Quantitative methods are, by now, a standard tool of the mining industry, and are commonly used by Research Departments in their evaluation of production methods and schedules, and their associated costs. Indeed, much sophisticated computer work has been devoted to such evaluation of controllable costs and capital requirements. These data are an important input into the project evaluation formula, which is probably the most important single calculation per formed by a mining company, since the result decides whether a particular project is viable. It is instructive to summarize the broad principles of project evaluation, since they are crucial to the remaining sections of this paper. PROJECT EVALUATION The most widely used method of appraising projects is known as Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) method. Two main variants are used; they are known as the 'not present value' (NPV) approach and the 'internal rate of return' (IRR) approach respectively. The difference between the two is that the former takes the firm's interest rate as given and uses this knowledge to calculate the present value of the project; whereas the latter calculates the highest interest rate the project could tolerate and still just breaks even. The technique is more simply discussed in terms of the first method (NPV).

Extractive metallurgy techniques currently employed to recover silver from primary ores and secondary scrap were reviewed and evaluated to identify and delineate metallurgical problems whose resolution would increase the supply of silver from domestic materials. The survey revealed that practically all primary silver is recovered by froth flotation concentration of various types of ores, followed by smelting and refining of the separate lead, copper, and zinc concentrates. Silver losses during the complex processing are, with rare exception, inconsequential. Furthermore, any silver production gain from base metal ores, which contribute about two-thirds of the total primary silver, is directly dependent in improvement in the market for the base metals. Statistical data on new and old silver scrap are wholly inadequate to make reliable conclusions about scrap processing problems and the possibility of increasing the recovery of silver from the many forms of secondary silver- bearing materials. The available information indicates (1) that efficient silver reclamation practices are employed by the larger users of silver, and (2) that recovery of additional secondary silver involves solution of problems of collection rather than of processing. Several possibilities exist for limited increases in silver production from primary ores by improvement in metallurgical practices. Specifically, research is needed to (1) solve the problem of recovering silver from the copper ores of the Copper Range district, Michigan; and (2) devise economically feasible methods for recovery of silver from presently marginal or submarginal ores that because of grade, location, and frequently complex nature cannot presently be exploited by conventional techniques.

This report describes a trip to Europe in the interest of safety in coal mines. It reviews the Eighth International Conference of Directors of Safety in Mines Re-search, which met in Dortmund-Derne, Germany, July 5-10, 1954, to discuss results of studies made in different countries to improve health and safety conditions under-ground. It also summarizes information on subjects of special interest in the United States gained by the writer in visits to mining experiment stations in Belgium, France, and England. The efforts being made to protect life and property underground were discussed, and ideas and experiences were interchanged freely, not only during the conference but also during visits to the several countries. Helpful information was obtained on many topics of interest, but time did not permit as thorough a discussion on some of them as might be desired.

The flotation has been and is still the most widely used mineral concentration method. Because of its complexity, the flotation process required the development of robust control strategies which was facilitated by the introduction of on-line sensing instruments such as x-ray fluorescence (XRF) on stream analyzer (OSA), gamma density gauges and electromagnetic flowmeters. The interest in developing control strategies has persisted because the benefits to be gained in terms of improved metallurgical performance are substantial. As the flotation control becomes more and more difficult due to the emergence of low grade and complex ore cases, other control strategies have to be introduced. Froth based control is one of the emerging useful control strategy This paper will focus on the state of the art in the on-line froth characterization as obtained by numerical image analysis. The technology of machine vision provides a novel solution to several of the problems encountered in conventional flotation systems for monitoring and control, and constitutes a powerful tool for the investigation and interpretation of the effect of various flotation parameters as driven for the froth phases. "Although South Africa possesses more than 80% of the world’s platinum reserves, its reputation for reliability in supplying platinum to global markets is under threat. This is due to the 49% decrease in output per worker (1999–2014), while the domestic costs have risen by more than 10% annually for the past 5 years. In addition, the continued decline in the commodity price by 38.3% (2012–2016) has resulted in a significant portion of the sector producing at a loss in 2015. The Chamber of Mines (now the Minerals Councilof South Africa) has suggested that solutions to improve productivity and reduce cost pressures are required. This research aims to provide operational excellence through the application of event chain project management (ECPM) to improve productivity and reduce operational costs. A case study was used to carry out research in platinum mines, with data collected using a motion-time study to measure the current efficiency of operations in each mining stope through actual activity durations. The results indicate that through the application of the event chain project management methodology, risks affecting the mining stope schedule can be managed, the efficiency of operations was improved by reducing the time spent on each activity, productivity was increased by shortening the project duration, and operational costs were reduced in the process. IntroductionSouth Africa’s total mining industry production was 4.9% lower in 2016 than in 2015; it decreased by 1.9% year-on-year in December 2016, with the main contributor to this negative trend being the platinum group metals (PGMs) with a drop of 15.1% and contributing -3.8% percentage points (Statistics South Africa, 2016). Although South Africa possesses more than 80% of the world’s platinum reserves, the 8% drop in production output since 2008 has put the platinum mining industry under the threat of being seen as an unreliable supplier to global markets. This decline in production is caused by the 49% decrease in output per worker between 1999 and 2014. In addition, the continued decline in the commodity price by 38.3% from 2012 to 2016 and an increase in operational costs during the same period resulted in a significant portion of the sector producing at a loss in 2015. A turnaround strategy is required to overcome these challenges. The Chamber of Mines has suggested, among others, the need for solutions to improve productivity and reduce cost pressures. The implementation of these solutions will ensure that the PGM industry thrives and reaches its potential of growing production to more than 322 t by 2020 (Baxter, 2016)."

That the governor is hereby authorized to appoint a commission of seven persons, to be known as the industrial accidents commission-two of whom shall be employers of labor, two of whom shall be employees in either mines or industrial establishments of this Commonwealth, or duly accredited representatives thereof, two of whom shall be learned in the law, and one of whom shall be a person skilled and experienced in making investigations-to inquire into the causes and results of industrial accidents in the mines, mills, factories, stores, and upon the railroads, street railways, ships, wharves, and in all industrial establishments, and in all other places where men, women, and children are employed in manual labor in this Commonwealth; to study the most advanced methods for safe-guarding against these accidents; to inquire into the subject of fair compensation for those who are injured in these accidents, and for the families of those who shall be killed as a result thereof; and to study the operation and effect of the Workmen's Compensation Law of 1913. SEC. 2. The chairman of said co~mission shall be designated by the governor, and the person named on said commission as a skilled and experienced investigator shall be the secretary of the commission, The commission shall have power to employ such legal counsel and other officers and employees as it may deem necessary to properly perform its duties. SEC. 3. The secretary of said commission shall receive an annual salary of $2,400 and his actual necessary expenses; and the other members of the commission shall receive no compensation for their services, but shall be allowed their actual traveling and other necessary expenses. The salaries of any other persons employed by the commission shall be fixed by it.

The ISASMELT process is a submerged lance smelting technology operating in smelters in Australia, the USA, Belgium, India, Germany, Malaysia and China. Further plants are under construction in Peru and Zambia. Initially developed at Mount Isa Mines, Australia, the technology is marketed by Xstrata Technology to companies around the world. Yunnan Copper Co. Ltd. (YCC) commissioned the first copper ISASMELT furnace in China in 2002. The plant quickly ramped up to design capacity and the first campaign lasted more than 2 years. Now into the second campaign, the furnace is exceeding the original design capacity and YCC has won numerous awards for its contribution to reducing emissions and energy consumption. YCC and Xstrata put great effort into managing the design, construction and commissioning of the smelter. Xstrata?s technology was combined with YCC?s novel management approach. This effort has been repaid in terms of the outstanding performance of the plant since startup. This paper updates the reader on the first few years? operation of the YCC ISASMELT plant and discusses the way in which the technology was transferred, leading to fast rampup and, as a result, enhanced profitability for the operators.

Air pollution control in primary aluminum smelter . Various processes are known for air pollution in electrolysis plants. Mainly two systems have to be taken into consideration: -Treatment of concentrated gases collected directly from hooded pots. This is normally achieved by either dry or wet process. This is not the object of this paper as these processes have been already described. -Treatment of low concentrated fumes. A certain amount of gaseous and solid fluoride (35 % of total fluor pollution) goes out of the hooded pot. Gases commonly called secondary fumes are generally treated by wet process. The object of 'this paper is to describe two plants with specific treatment for secondary fumes. 1/ A plant in operation in Vlissingen (Netherlands) for PECHINEY. 2/ Presentation of tests carried out by a specialized Company. The results of such tests have been used for the design of the scrubbers presently under construction for ALUMINIO ESPANOL San Ciprian (Spain).
