The innovation in a technological field is reflected by the Research and Development (R & D) activity in it. It is explained why patent literature is a more reliable indicator than non-patent literature for the assessment of the R & D activity in the technological fields considered. Consequently the R & D activity is measured in this article through the patent applications filed in the fields considered. The pattern of patent application filings in Drilling, Mining, Tunneling and accessory technologies is analyzed at an international scale over the period 1990-2000. A statistical analysis of the fluctuation of the number of patent applications per year, per country and per technological field is performed. The technological fields are defined on the basis of the internal patent classification used in the European Patent Office. The article attempts to detect the high activity and ?cutting edge? technologies over said period, to relate them to political or financial events and possibly to foresee the ?cutting edge? technologies of the future in which potential investors could be successful. Strong patents are revealed on the basis of the frequency of their citations by the applicants in patent applications or by the patent examiners in the search report. International as well as specific national trends in the innovation are spotted and analyzed.

What is meant by "Minimizing Risk"? This paper explores some of the factors encountered in plant design which can affect the success of a mineral processing plant in terms of its planned output, quality of product and recovery. Any deficiency in either one of these objectives means lost revenue at the start of a project and reduced present value for the mine life. Time is money. Related factors such as project conception, feasibility studies, capital cost and operating cost estimation and mining studies have been covered in a recent paper (1) from which material for this paper has been drawn. What follows is a discussion of the principal factors which can influence the success of a project with particular emphasis placed on processing concepts.

"The selection of the ultimate pit shell has a major impact on the overall value of a mining project. The size and shape of this pit drives the selection of pushbacks, equipment, and project strategy, each of which are significant in their own right. Optimization of the ultimate pit shape is typically done using the Lerchs-Grossman algorithm with inputs of production costs, commodity prices, and pit slope constraints. This method ensures that every tonne mined is profitable but does not take into consideration the timing of material release. This timing is essential when calculating the Net Present Value (NPV) of the project, which is one of the most popular metrics for valuing deposits. Often, when the mining schedule and discounting are applied, material that was considered profitable before discounting becomes sterilized. The objective of this paper is to show the methodology for improving ultimate pit selection by considering the production schedule. Application of this technique will generally produce a smaller and higher-value pit than using the Lerchs-Grossman algorithm alone. INTRODUCTION The Lerchs-Grossman Algorithm was developed in the 1960s and exists to produce a mathematically optimum shape for open pit mines (1). This algorithm is now an industry leading technique for producing the theoretical optimum shape for open pits and is used in many popular pit optimization and strategic planning software packages, such as GEOVIA’s Whittle. The Lerchs-Grossman (LG) Algorithm is based on graph theory and optimizes on the assumption of non-discounted cash flows. This produces a mathematically optimum shape, but does not consider the timing with which the material will be removed from the ground. This is an important consideration, given that one of the most popular metrics for evaluating mining projects is Net Present Value (NPV) (2), which relies on the timing of cash flows as a major differentiator between options. This paper will discuss issues inherent in the use of ultimate pit selection based on undiscounted economic factors and illustrate a simple technique in Whittle, a leading software package, which can be used to improve the NPV of projects."

Diesel particulate matter (DPM) often contains small amounts of metal as a minor component but this metal may contribute to adverse health effects. Knowledge of the mechanism for particle formation as well as the size preference of the trace metals is critical to understanding the potential for health concerns. To achieve this, the size and the composition of each particle should be optimally measured at the same time. Single particle mass spectrometer (SPMS) would be the best tool for this objective. In this paper, we therefore will introduce new findings about the mechanism and distribution of the trace metals in DPM, derived from a study where an SPMS was used to analyze freshly emitted DPM. "Refractory sulfidic ores consist of materials in which gold occurs finely disseminated within metallic sulfides or forming solid solutions, with pyrite and arsenopyrite being the two sulfides most commonly associated with gold. Typical cyanide operations show poor performance and require oxidative pretreatments to increase gold recovery. Pretreatment alternatives include roasting, pre-aeration, acidic and alkaline high pressure oxidation, and bacterial oxidation. The presence of arsenic, however, introduces a serious disadvantage to the use of roasting and bacterial leaching, while high pressure oxidation involves high capital costs. This work focuses on evaluating the effect of the addition of a carbon resin as a sulfur collector on the oxidation of different arsenopyrite concentrates under atmospheric tank leaching (ATL) conditions. The addition of the resin improved the oxidation of sulfides and favored the formation of elemental sulfur over the generation of sulfate. The use of carbonaceous materials to enhance the dissolution of sulfides is not novel, and leaching additives such as coal, activated carbon and carbon powder have been considered for the improvement of bioleaching, atmospheric leaching, and pressure oxidation leaching processes. However, this type of technology has been focused mainly on the recovery of copper from copper concentrates containing chalcopyrite with less attention paid to other sulfides."

O emprego das ligas NiTi proporcionou a fabricação de instrumentos endodônticos com diferentes desenhos de lâminas cortantes. Este estudo investigou a relação entre as características geométricas destes instrumentos e a força apical necessária para inseri-los em canais artificiais em blocos de acrílico. A força apical foi registrada através de um dispositivo de bancada de testes. Dez instrumentos de cada tipo ES, Mtwo, ProFile GT, ProFile GTX, K3, RaCe e PTU F1 foram testados a uma velocidade de 300 rpm e um torque de 5 Ncm com um movimento vertical de 17 mm de comprimento. Os dados foram comparados por análise de variância (a = 0,05). Avaliação geométrica e dimensional mostrou que o instrumento K3 tem a maior área de seção transversal, seguido por PTU F1 e GT. Os ângulos helicoidais menores de RaCe, ES e GTX podem ter contribuído para os baixos valores de força apical encontrados. Maiores valores de força apical foram determinados nos instrumentos GT, K3 e PTU F1 em relação à RaCe, ES e GTX. Foi observado que a força apical exercida durante o preparo do canal está diretamente relacionada à área de seção transversal e aos valores dos ângulos helicoidais dos instrumentos.

IN 1922, the writer communicated to the Institute a paper entitled The Development of the Coal Industry in Canada (1), which summarized the considerations set out in a series of papers (2) concerned with coal-mining in Canada which he had presented in 1920 and 1921. This paper contained a forecast by decades, commencing 1920, of Canadian coal production, importation, consumption, and exports, based on anticipated rate of population increase, and continuation of the gradual increase in the per capita rate of coal consumption in Canada that had taken place every year up to 1920. The object of this investigation was to determine the growth habit of bismuth and bisrrtuth alloy dendrites as a function of supercooling. To do this, techniques were developed to increase the amount of supercooling in bismuth and bismuth alloys. For pure bismuth, the growth habit was dependent on the amount of supercooling. At low amounts of supercooling, about 10" C, prismatic dendrites were obtained. With increased supercooling, about 20 C, a hopper growth habit was observed. In many cases where hopper growth had occurred, the hopper dendrites were twinned during the growth process. This twinned surface enable prismatic dendrites to nucleate and grow by a twin plane mechanism. When the amount of supercooling was increased to about 25 °C, the growth habit was a triplanar growth. With still greater supercooling, about 3s°C, a branched growth habit occurred. The exposed planes on the prismatic, hopper,, triplane, and branched dendrites have been determined. The growth habit of the dendrites which grew along the crucible wall was found to have the (111) as the exposed plane, with <211> growth direction. It is apparent that dendritic growth of a metal is dependent on its purity and the solidification variables present. One of the solidification variables is the degree of supercooling. Supercooling, although often observed, has not been studied extensively until recent years. For dendritic growth to occur in a pure metal, the metal must be thermally supercooled. After the dendrites grow into the supercooled melt, the heat of solidification raises the temperature of the specimen to the melting point of the material and the remaining liquid will solidify at this temperature. Decanting is the removal of this remaining liquid before complete solidification. This removal of the remaining liquid after recalescence had occurred is a great aid in the study of dendritic growth. In this investigation, decanting was accomplished by a vacuum-decanting technique . Other investigators1-5 have studied the growth characteristics of various low-melting-temperature pure metals and alloys as a function of supercooling. However, large degrees of supercooling were not included. For their study of dendritic growth of lead, Weinberg and chalmersl employed a decanting technique which was achieved by pouring off the remaining liquid, exposing the solid/liquid interface. This method was employed later by Weinberg and Chalmers2 for the investigation of tin and zinc dendrites. The method for obtaining a solid/liquid interface was improved by Chalmers and Elbaum. They employed a triggered spring which was attached to the solidifying section of the specimen. Upon activation, the spring jerked the solid interface away from the liquid melt. In the study of growth from the supercooled state, a metal of low melting point which exhibited a high degree of supercooling was desired. Bismuth gave very consistent supercooling when a stannous chloride flux was employed. The maximum supercooling obtained was 91°C, with an average supercooling of between 65" and 75°C. The consistency of supercooling greater than 50°C was very high. The use of vacuum to aid in the rapid decanting of molten metal has proven to be very successful in this investigation. The vacuum gives a rapid decantation, usually leaving the solidified metal structure sharply defined. The purpose of this investigation was to study the effects of supercooling and the effects of alloy additions on the growth habit of bismuth dendrites. The structure of bismuth has been variously defined as face-centered rhombohedral, primitive rhombohedral, and hexagonal. However, bismuth has only one plane with threefold symmetry, the (111) plane, and the crystal-lographic structure is considered a 3kn structure. MATERIALS The bismuth which was employed in this investigation was obtained from the American Smelting and Refining Co. of South Plainfield, N. J. The accompanying spectrographic analysis data indicated the bismuth to be 99.999+ pct pure. The tin was obtained from the Vulcan Materials Co., Vulcan Detinning Division, Sewaren, N. J. It was classified as "extra pure". Nominal analysis was 99.999+pct. In order to prevent contamination of the bismuth melt from the atmosphere, an anhydrous stannous chloride (Fisher certified reagent grade) was added to each melt. The fluxing action obtained from the use of the chloride provided a large amount of supercooling in the specimen. APPARATUS A 30-kw, 10,000-cps motor-generator set, connected to a 6+-in.-diam air induction coil, was employed to melt and superheat the specimens. The temperatures were recorded by means of a chromel-alumel thermocouple and a potentiometric recorder. The thermocouples were 0.003 in. in diam, and were encapsulated with Pyrex glass to prevent the thermocouple from acting as a nucleating agent and also from contaminating the melt. Fig. 1 illustrates the vacuum-decanting apparatus when a liquid flux was employed. A standard 30-ml Pyrex beaker was placed on top of an asbestos insulating block. A 5-mm-ID Pyrex tube with aA-in. spacer tip attached to its end was used for the decanting tube. The spacer tip contributed significantly to a successful decanting operation. Ammoniacal pressure leaching operations have been in commercial use at the Fort Saskatchewan refinery of Sherritt International Corporation since 1954. Recent improvements have significantly increased the capacity of this circuit. The computer modeling of this process has proved to be a valuable tool in facilitating the evaluation of different operating scenarios in an effective manner. Reagent response in the ammonia leach of nickel and cobalt sulphides is examined using the dynamic process simulation capabilities of IDEAS(TM) software. The dynamic simulation enables accurate measurement of the sensitivity of the process to variables such as temperature, feed rate and ammonia concentration as well as compartmental analysis of metals concentration, pulp density, vent gas composition, and the formation of specific complexes. The complexity of the ammonia leach process makes it a logical choice for evaluation by computational analysis. The methodology for dynamic modeling of a pressure leach process is presented.

Pyrite depression with prolonged pre-conditioning treatment in high salinity water has attracted much of researchers’ interest in recent years considering the increased utilisation of multiple stage flotation, closed water circuits, clay minerals, and sea water in flotation plants. In this study, the role of calcium (Ca)/magnesium (Mg) precipitates in stabilising the dissociative ferric hydroxy-xanthate (FHX), and its effect on modifying the balance of hydrophobic/hydrophilic species on the pyrite surface were primarily investigated. The total amount of extractable Fe-bearing species on pyrite concentrates and tailings after floatability test was quantitively determined using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) extraction tests combined with inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). A more evident accumulation of extracted-Fe in pyrite concentrates rather than it in pyrite tailings was observed at both pH 9 and 10.5 when pyrite was pre-conditioned in Ca/Mg-bearing solutions for 360 min. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy showed the main xanthate derivatives changed from di-xanthogen (1155 cm-1 ) to FHX (1167 cm-1 ) on the oxidised pyrite samples that were preconditioned in Ca/Mg-bearing solutions. Scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS) suggested the preferential accumulation of FHX upon secondary Ca/Mg-bearing precipitates as reflected by the higher Fe/S ratio together with the decrease of O element herein after xanthate conditioning. Although the hydrophilic secondary Ca/Mg/Fe-bearing minerals on the pyrite surface generally deteriorate pyrite’s floatability, the upper section of these secondary hydrophilic aggregates is partially covered by FHX alongside with further multilayer-adsorbed di-xanthogen. The precipitated Ca/Mg-bearing precipitates promotes the immobilisation of dissociated FHX derived from the reaction among iron oxyhydroxides and xanthate anions upon the localised secondary Ca/Mg/Fe-bearing minerals via acid–base complexation. Therefore, this phenomenon alleviates the hydrophilic modification of secondary Ca/Mg/Fe-bearing minerals to pyrite considering the immobilised FHX upon localised precipitates shows a slight hydrophobicity, and meanwhile, the upper FHX benefits the multilayer adsorption of di-xanthogen via the interaction among their inner hydrophobic alkyl chains.

This work presents an experimental study of flow dynamics in a bubble column system (crosssection: 100 mm × 100 mm) using a non-intrusive optical technique with targeted application in a novel REFLUX™ Flotation Cell. The study had two aims – measurement of the bubble size distribution (BSD) and local energy dissipation rate in the system due to bubble motions over a low range of gas flux varied from 0.02 to 0.08 cm/s without impairing the visibility of the system. A central bubble plume was generated by injecting compressed air through a sintered glass distributor in quiescent liquid. Highspeed shadowgraphy imaging was performed to determine the BSD in the presence of surfactant (Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS) concentration ~ 10 ppm). The BSD exhibited a unimodal shape at different locations of the column for all gas flux cases. A non-intrusive particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique was used to quantify the flow field generated by the bubble motions, which was used to estimate the local energy dissipation rate. The local energy dissipation rate exhibited an increasing power-law dependency on the gas flux.

"Diesel particulate matter (DPM) exposures are a serious occupational health hazard in underground mines. While the complex nature of DPM makes direct analysis difficult, its primary component, elemental carbon (EC), can be used as surrogate. The near real-time FLIR Airtec monitor measures EC mass based on laser extinction. It was developed for use in underground metal/non-metal mines, and calibrated to the NIOSH Method 5040. Its effectiveness has not been demonstrated in coal mines, however, where coal-sourced EC could produce analytical interference. To gain preliminary insights regarding the Airtec’s performance in the presence of coal dust, experiments were conducted in a controlled laboratory chamber. The Airtec EC results consistently underestimated Method 5040 EC for both respirable-sized and submicron coal dusts. While underestimation of coal-sourced EC bodes well for limiting coal interference for DPM measurement, one key reason for the observed trend was non-uniform coal particle deposition on the Airtec filter. This may be problematic in coal mines where DPM and coal dust occur together in the instance that DPM deposition is also non-uniform. INTRODUCTION Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is an occupational health hazard, and underground miners have the potential for relatively high exposures due to their work in confined environments with large diesel equipment (NIOSH, 2011). DPM is heterogenous and complex in terms of its chemical composition (Birch & Cary, 1996; Noll et al., 2006), but elemental (EC) and total carbon (TC) are often used as analytical surrogates (Birch & Noll, 2004; Noll et al, 2015). EC is the solid “soot” component of DPM, whereas TC also includes particulate organic carbon (OC) (Noll et al., 2007). EC and OC can be measured in filter samples using the standard NIOSH Method 5040 (NIOSH, 2003), and summed to obtain TC. In US mines, TC has been adopted as the analytical surrogate for DPM in regulatory activities. In metal/non-metal mines, personal exposures are limited under 30 CFR Part 57. In coal mines, limitations are made on emissions from each piece of equipment (30 CFR Part 72) rather than for personal exposures. This is because coal dust has the potential to interfere with TC measurements in personal samples. In some other countries, and for non-regulatory purposes in the US, EC is also commonly used as a surrogate for DPM in mine monitoring applications [e.g., see AIOSH, 2013). EC generally exhibits a linear correlation with TC (Birch & Cary, 1996; Noll et al., 2006 and 2007) but unlike TC measurements, which are analytically intensive, EC can be determined more simply using a laser absorption/extinction principle on filter samples (Noll et al., 2013)."

An impinging gas jet on a water surface was studied to understand momentum transfer in oxygen steelmaking. Depth, width and oscillation frequency of the jet cavity were measured and the splashes interpreted with Kelvin-Helmholtz instability and combined Rayleigh-Taylor and Kelvin-Helmholtz instability theory. A model to calculate separate gas and liquid velocities, applying the exact momentum boundary condition, is proposed.

For the past 50 years, the primary crushing of stone at the Dolase Bros. Co. Richards Spur Quarry. 13 miles north of Lawton, Oklahoma, has been accomplished by a Traylor 42-inch gyratory crusher. The production capacity of the primary system, consisting of a feeder, grizzly, and the gyratory crusher, was approximately 2100 tons per hour. Shot-down scone was hauled from the working face about one mile to the feeder by a fleet of Caterpillar Model 773&apos;s and WABCO 60- and 65-ton trucks. In order to maintain production, nine to ten trucks and four Caterpillar Model 992 front-end loaders were required to be operational at all times.

Coal gasification solid residue (slag) contains unconverted carbon (char), which is considered an impurity for utilization applications of slag. Under this study, table concentration was used to process approximately 24,000 pounds of a nominal-3.4 mm gasifier slag (-85% ash) to separate high (-100%) ash slag from low (-50%) ash char. The results indicated a nearly ideal separation of the slag from the char for sizes coarser than about 1 mm. An overall slag yield of 71 % was obtained. The slag was sufficiently clean to be used as feed material for the production of expanded lightweight aggregate. The recovered char had an ash content of about 47% and was a nominal -1mm in size.

Editor&apos;s note: The subject of mining on the moon can generate a wide range of strongly held opinion, from those leaning toward the view that, ultimately, such activity is the destiny of mankind to those who believe that all suggestions for moon mining to date are unrealistic, wildly expensive and in the hands of people who &apos;know nothing.&apos; MINING ENGINEERING herewith publishes some of the basic pros and cons on the subject of moon mining by writers who are among those holding strong views on the subject, with the hope that some of our readers may be interested in joining this debate. Every mineralogist and most mineral industry people were keenly interested in the examinations of the first moon rocks brought back by US astronauts in 1969. Suffice to say that the examinations revealed nothing exotic in the mineral makeup of the very limited rock samples. The rocks were generally of igneous type, dark-colored and contained some common, Earth-type minerals. There was, in Earth terms, above average TiO2 content, but they contained nothing of commercial significance by Earth standards. Therefore, interest in moon minerals rapidly faded. Years later, on Sunday, May 4, 1986, living in Reno, NV, this author was shocked to read a local newspaper article by the Dean of the Mackay School of Mines, University of Nevada, Reno, headlined, "Moon Mining Not Far Off." Introduction A successful step towards mechanisation of the collier&apos;s work was taken in 1954 when the first Anderton shearer loader was commissioned in Lancashire, and progress was reinforced in 1956 when the first powered supports were installed in Nottinghamshire. By 1970, virtually 100% of the coalfaces in the United Kingdom were mechanised and the industry&apos;s productivity had doubled. In 1961 the National Coal Board recognised that the next move towards greater productivity and improved safety would be to automate the longwall system. What was not well enough understood, however, was that the basic prerequisites of automation - reliability and measurement - had not yet been achieved. Consequently, the schemes for automatic longwall faces and for an entirely automated colliery were abandoned at the close of the decade. A review of mining research and development policy, commissioned by the Board in 1974, confirmed that the system of longwall mining had great potential for investment and that the short-term policy of automation must once again be pursued. Since then, aided by advances in computer technology, systems for automating the transport of coal from the face to the coal preparation plant have been successfully instituted. Applications of sub-systems dealing with the conveyor, coal preparation plant, and various items of fixed plant are now at the exploitation stage. In the medium term, a number of key problems have been identified, which will arise once the productivity from the coalfaces has doubled, as it is now expected to do in the next five years. One of the most important of these problems is machine guidance, and considerable research and development work is now being carried out in this area. This paper reviews the work on machine guidance prior to 1974 and explains the programme on which the National Coal Board&apos;s Mining Research and Development Establishment is currently working.

The aim of this paper was to establish if mineral resource scarcity is a driver for South Africa to transition to a circular economy. The project objectives were achieved by investigating economically viable, and critical or strategic minerals remaining in South Africa, as well as resource scarcity, as a driver for South Africa to transition to a circular economy. The study found that some minerals in South Africa, such as iron ore, lead, manganese, gold, and cobalt have less than 50 years of economically viable mining remaining. At least 18 minerals can be classified indicatively as critical or strategic: aggregates, bauxite, chromite, cobalt, copper, gold, graphite, iron, limestone, lithium, manganese, nickel, phosphorous, platinum group metals, rare earth elements, silver, titanium, and vanadium. The classification was based on the minerals’ economic importance, supply risk, and potential use in the development and manufacturing of emerging technologies. The findings suggest that the scarcity of mineral resources is a critical driver for the country to transition to a circular economy. Other identified drivers include socio-economic factors, climate change commitments, and business objectives. All minerals are non-renewable resources and at risk of depletion, therefore sustainable extraction and use are critical. Priority should be directed at investigating circular economy opportunities and substitutes for commodities at risk of being depleted within the next 50 years. There is an opportunity for South Africa to transition from a minerals export-based model to one that promotes local mineral beneficiation and manufacturing of end products.

Introduction Gowganda forms part of the general Cobalt area. Its rocks and ores are very similar to those of the other parts of the area. While its total production of silver is only 4 per cent of that of the famous Cobalt silver camp, its 1928 shipments contained 42 1/2 per cent as much silver as those of Cobalt for that year. During twenty years of production, 15,000,000 ounces of silver have been shipped from Gowganda. Of this, over 8,000,000 ounces have been shipped in the past five years. The area has thus made for several years a substantial contribution to the wealth of Ontario. Its future depends to a great extent on the priee of silver, which is now, unfortunately, at a record low price. This paper is a discussion of how the Gowganda ore-shoots occur, together with some notes on the milling of the ores at the Castle-Trethewey Mines. The first part is written in the hope of stimulating further study of the silver occurrences, which may lead to further discoveries. The second part, besides being a matter of record, may be of some use to operators of small mills. The drawings in the several Figures illustrating the text are by W. D.
