Critical decisions in iron ore project evaluation and production are based on global and local spatial estimates of primary mineral deposit properties (such as in situ geochemical grades) and geometallurgical responses (such as screened, washed or concentrated product yields and grades), which are derived from limited sample data. These spatial estimates are typically made using classical geostatistical techniques, which fundamentally assume that the attributes of interest behave additively. This assumption is generally appropriate for æprimaryÆ variables but æresponseÆ variables may behave non-additively and therefore their direct linear estimates may be biased.In this paper an existing additivity testing mechanism is used to quantify the bias resulting from direct linear estimation of a non-additive iron ore attribute. Data from a magnetite project are used to determine the circumstances under which such biases may be of material impact. The implications for iron ore resource estimation, geometallurgical modelling and grade control are outlined and discussed.CITATION:Cornah, A J, 2013. This paper details the preliminary design work carried out before and during the implementation of an extensive backfilling programme on Cooke 3 Shaft, Randfontein Estates Gold Mining Company (Witwatersrand) Limited. The design work is of relevance to any system utilizing a cementitious binder, and the quality control aspects are of particular significance. Problems associated with correlating laboratory results to actual field results are also briefly discussed.

The Young America lead-silver-zinc mine in Stevens County, Wash., was investigated by the Bureau of Mines during parts of 1946, 1947, and 1948. Results of the investigation are described herein. The mine is 1/4 mile northeast of Bossburg, Wash., the nearest railway station. An excellent paved highway (No. 22) connects Bossburg with Colville, Wash., 23 miles to the south. The property was located in October 1885. It is credited with a production of 2,178 tons of shipping ore since 1901. The shipping ore averaged 7 percent lead, 7.7 percent zinc, and 16.1 ounces silver per ton. The property is under lease and option to Walter E. Morris and Perry Leighton of Colville, Wash. The deposit crops out on a steep limestone bluff overlooking the Columbia River. The country rock is a highly metamorphosed, brecciated, marbleized limestone (Northport formation).

This paper explores tools which have the potential to promote and assess the formation of partnerships between the minerals and energy industries to enhance the economic, environmentally responsible and socially acceptable use of energy. There is a need to look at energy provision and energy services in an integrated manner with key drivers for economic development û both locally and regionally. The minerals sector will remain highly significant to regional economic development in a number of globally significant regions in the medium term. Furthermore, mining, minerals and metalsÆ projects are both consumers and, in some cases (potential), generators of large amounts of energy (electricity included). It is therefore appropriate to focus on the promotion of partnerships between energy providers and the minerals sector which seek to improve resource efficiency within the combined minerals/energy envelope, guided by the tenets of Sustainability.Whilst there has been considerable development of systems analysis tools in recent years to address this sort of æcomplex systemsÆ analysis (Life Cycle Management, Cleaner Production and Industrial Ecology arguments for example), there is no effective roadmap available to decision makers to guide the selection and exploitation of these tools in different contexts. Our previous work developed a Decision Support Framework (DSF) which provides some guidance here, but only within the context of coal-based power generation. The DSF employs the tools of Multi Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA), within which trade-offs between competing objectives are explored in such a way that alternatives can be compared without necessarily reducing all the different cost and benefits to a common basis (eg a monetary basis). Even if the existing DSF is extended to include all aspects of supply-side management, it is still lacking the necessary tools to analyse energy providers as dynamic network partners within minerals projects (or indeed any resource or manufacturing sector). New models are required for this, which firstly, seek to characterise such network structures, and secondly, enable the application of the necessary analytic tools to exploit these partnerships and networks for optimal performance.This paper explores the development of such an integrated set of network analysis tools, and their relation to the DSF. Due consideration is given to the choice of the attributes needed to characterise partnership linkages and network integrity (eg security of supply of electricity), and the efficiency of material transformations within any node of the network (as a function of energy consumption), and the impact that this has on the viability of other linkages (eg due to reduced availability of raw materials). We discuss how these perspectives help shape the form of objectives to be considered by MCDA.

A simple gravimetric procedure was developed for the rapid determination of carbon dioxide in coal mine roadway dust samples and the result is used for the subsequent calculation of incombustible matter contentaccording to the requirements of the Queensland Coal Mining Act. The carbon dioxide is determined through loss of mass by a semi-enclosed apparatus, following room-temper.ature hydrochloric acid attack on the sample.With a sample containing 36 per cent carbon dioxide, the achieved standard deviation (ls) of 0·3 per cent CO. is adequate for coal mine roadway dust analysis.This simple procedure enables relatively unskilled labour in mine laboratories, to analyze coal mine roadway dust samples in accordance with the Act. Some 50 analyses can be achieved per day compared with 8 by the Australian Standard Method for coal.

"Advances in thermal plasma torches have resulted in this technology becoming a commercially viable solution for chemical and metallurgical processes. The main advantages of plasma are its ability to control process chemistry and to build small footprint reactors due to its high energy density and reactivity of the free radicals that are produced. This paper focuses on thermal plasmas produced by DC torches and their applications for waste treatment, production of high purity metals, and nanomaterials. Both transferred and non-transferred torches have been used as either a source of heat or as a reagent in various industrial processes. Retrofitting plasma torches in place of fuel oil burners lead to lower operating costs, capital cost and greenhouse gas emissions.INTRODUCTIONPlasma technology has become an ideal solution for many industrial chemical, metallurgical and mechanical processes [!]. Thermal plasma powered systems are typical used for their unique characteristics such as high energy densities, high temperatures, small installation sizes, rapid start-up and shutdown features, controlled process chemistry and use of electrical energy as a heating source resulting in decoupling the heat source from the oxygen flow rate [2]. Depending on the nature of the main plasma forming gas used, thermal plasma systems offer a high temperature heating source coupled with a highly reactive plasma plume rich in free radicals and ions which promote otherwise hard to drive chemical reactions, as well as high heat transfer rates."

The author was the banquet speaker at the 48th Annual MPD meeting, sponsored by the SME Colorado Minerals Processing Section, May 14-16, 1998, in Colorado Springs, CO. Here are his remarks. It has been an exciting experience to have spent 34 years involved with the process of generating patented technology eventually leading to commercialization. In today's terminology, this process is called technology transfer. I have had the unusual experience of being involved doing basic research as an inventor while also being responsible for managing new product development and commercialization. In addition, I worked for 31 years before my retirement for a large research-oriented company, The Dow Chemical Co. In 1995, the company spent more than $1 billion dollars on research and development. The last three years of my career have been spent working with a research-oriented university, The University of Florida. And I have worked as a consultant helping several companies to optimize their products and processes. It is on this cumulative experience base that the preparation of this article is based.

The presence of combustible gases and vapors in air can constitute n extremely serious explosion hazard. This hazard is even greater when explosive mixtures are confined under high pressures, as the pressure can become tremendous immediately before the container is ruptured. Because of its interest in safety in mining and. allied industries, the U. S. Bureau of Mines has investigated the explosive properties of a number of gaseous and liquid compounds; the results of these investigations have been published in various government papers and journal articles. The increased use of liquefied, petroleum gases has intensified interest in the effect of high pressures on the explosibility of propane-air mixtures. The limits of flammability of natural gas-air mixtures have been determined at pressures ranging from 50 min. Hg to 3,000 p.s.i. As it is known that a combustible. gas or vapor cannot burn or explode when the oxygen content of the atmosphere is less than a certain value, critical values were determined for the oxygen content of atmospheres to which nitrogen had been added as a diluent. In this connection limits of flammability were determined for ethane in atmospheres containing added. nitrogen or carbon dioxide at pressures up to 900 p.s.i.g.

The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (sec. 303 (b)) stipulates that no working section of the mine shall contain more than 0.5 percent carbon dioxide and no harmful quantities of other noxious or poisonous gases such as the oxides of nitrogen. The concentration of methane should at all times be maintained below one percent. A split of air returning from any working section shall contain no more than 1.5 percent of methane (sec. 303 (i) (2)) and air that has passed by an opening of any abandoned area shall not be used to ventilate any working place in the coal mine if such air contains more than 0.25 percent of methane (sec. 303 (j)). Methane concentration in the returns from the bleeder entries should not exceed 2.0 percent (sec. 303 (i) (3)), and no air that has passed through an opening which is inaccessible for examination shall be used to ventilate any active areas. While the air quantity requirements alone can easily be met, the governing condition in most mines is the dilution requirements for quality control. A sufficient quantity of air is required to render harmless and carry away noxious and respirable pollutants. In recent years, changes in coal extraction methods, rates of advance, location of available reserves, position of prominent methane sources and horizons, and geological sequences have contributed sig¬nificantly to alterations in rates, patterns and character of numerous methane emissions. Gas production of 10 to 15 million standard cubic feet per day is not uncommon from deep mines (Cervik, 1969). THERE are many who may consider a paper on aerial transport and its possibilities in connection with mining operations somewhat premature. Nevertheless, as there is considerable interest manifested in the subject at the present time and the amount of information available is both scanty and misleading, the result of investigations in some of the remote mining districts of Peru will not only be of interest, but will help crystallize, in the minds of many, a more correct conception of just what an airplane is capable of doing. By way of introduction, I will deal briefly with the types and varieties of airplanes now in use, and the developments of the past few years, pointing out -how the war has encouraged machines. of startling performance rather than those of commercial utility. I will then take up aerial transport in general, showing how airplanes may be employed to advantage and the particular kind of work for which they are best suited. This will cover a preliminary discussion on cost, which is one of the most important phases of the subject. In passing on from a general survey of the situation, I will deal with actual observations and investigations made in Peru. This part of the paper will be divided into two sections: the first, covering the mountainous districts of the Andes (Tamboras, Pataz, Soledad, etc.); the second, the alluvial deposits in the rivers, Chinchipe, Santiago, and Napo. In each case the question of atmospheric conditions, altitude, landing grounds, motors, cost, etc. will be discussed. While it is my intention to deal chiefly with mining in the sections mentioned, the same line of argument will be applicable to any other districts in the world. In conclusion, I will touch on the possibilities of using lighter-than-air craft of the Zeppelin type, followed by a summary of the most salient points brought out in the paper.

The Gibbs free energies of formation of UC2 and UC were measured by equilibrating two-phase mixtures of UC2 + C and UC, + UC with liquid bismuth. The measured equilibrium concentrations of uranium in the bismuth combined with available activity coefficient information yielded uranium activities in these two-phase regions. Measurements on UC2 were performed over the range 1015 to 1160 K and on UC over the range 1115° to 1165°K. The values obtained for UC2 are in excellent agveement with values determined using combustton calorimetry and low-temperature heat capacity measurements. The UC values are in fair agreement with the calorimetric values, differing by about 10 pct from the calorimetric determination. MUCH interest has been shown in the uranium carbides in recent years because of their potential as nuclear fuels. As nuclear reactor operating temperatures have been raised to increase thermal efficiency, new fuels have been required. The uranium carbides are of interest because of their high melting points, >2000°C, high thermal conductivity, and resistance to irradiation damage. The manufacture and use of uranium carbides are aided by a knowledge of their stability and reactivity under various conditions. In this regard the thermo-chemical properties of the carbides, i.e., heat capacity, heat of formation, free energy of formation, and so forth, are particularly important. A great amount of work has recently been done on the thermodynamics of the U-C system. Unfortunately, however, there has not been good agreement among the various investigations. This study of the free energies of formation of uranium monocarbide and uranium di-carbide in the temperature region 1100°-1200° K was undertaken to help clarify the situation. It should be noted that in the temperature range of this investigation, 1100°- 1200° K, the thermodynam-ically stable phase in equilibrium with graphite is U2C3, not UC2, Fig. 1. However, U2C3 is reported to be stable only under extremely low oxygen and nitrogen pressure. Although UC2 is metastable below 150O°C, it exists under most experimental conditions. It should also be noted that "UC," never exists as UC2 but with compositions near UC1.9. However, "UC2" will be used to designate the dicarbide phase except when the stoi-chiometry is necessary for clarity. METHOD The approach taken in this study of the free energies of formation of UC and UC2 was to determine the thermo- dynamic activities of uranium in the two-phase regions UC, + C and UC + UC, by equilibrating the two-phase mixtures with the liquid bismuth. When a mixture of solid UC2 + C is brought to equilibrium with liquid bismuth, the reaction that occurs is: Neither carbon nor UC, could be detected as dissolved material in the bismuth. The standard free energy for this reaction may be written: In the two-phase region UC, + C, Fig. 1, the thermo-dynamic activities of UC2 and carbon are unity. The activity of uranium in this region was determined by measuring the concentration of uranium in a liquid bismuth melt in equilibrium with the two-phase mixture. This concentration was then used in conjunction with the activity coefficient data of uranium in bismuth reported by Tien et al.' to determine the activity of uranium in the two-phase region, UC, + C. All of the quantities in Eq. [2] were then known, and the AG; (uc,) was evaluated. UC + UC2. The objective of this program was to determine by laboratory experiments the kinetics and mechanics of the reactions that produce acid in coal mine drainage. The program was divided into three phases: In Phase I, five coil mines, representative of Appalachian coal mines, were chosen for sampling and an experimental design was identified suited to accomplish the program objectives. In Phase II, the five mines were sampled and test protocols applied. The results showed most pyrite weathering to be based on oxidation in the presence of water. Iron bacteria, especially Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, catalyzed the rate of pyrite weathering by a factor of three. An increase in initial iron concentration in a system that modeled the nine environment acted to inhibit bacterial catalysis of weathering. In Phase III, five tailings piles were sampled and the material obtained was used to evaluate this method of bacterial catalysis inhibition. The evaluation verified method effectiveness; inhibition of over 80% of the release of weathering products was observed.

Dust produced during blasting in a copper/nickel based mine was studied and characterized. A stope utilizing the crater blasting technique, or the vertical retreat mining (VRM method), was examined. Two dust monitors were used to measure an airborne dust produced during blasting operations. The data collected in situ was primarily used to formulate the boundary value problem for a generalized equation that describes the transportation process of airborne dust from all places where dust is produced by the VRM mining method. The field data was also used to define the analytical forms for the initial and boundary conditions, to provide a simple and reliable equation for flow of dust in a stope vicinity, and to identify the non-measurable constants. The effects of the amount of blasting material and of the ventilation system in use on dust concentration are also discussed.

DURING some experiments made by Henry J. Miller, partly in Germany and partly in the United States, in which it was found necessary to melt metals in quantities up to 60 kg. in a vacuum or under low pressures of hydrogen, molybdenum was tried as the resistor in the electric melting furnaces. Molybdenum ribbons 16 by 0.55 mm. and 18 by 0.45 mm. were used as resistors. The furnaces were of the type shown in Fig. 1. [ ] About the heating tube, Y, are wound parallel resistors of molybdenum ribbon from the water-cooled electrodes, E1, E2. The whole is within a copper container having outlets for the removal or introduction of gases and a window, W, for observation, the space about the heating tube and electrodes being filled with insulating material. The life of the molybdenum used as the resistor was found to depend very much on the manner of using it, its failure being due in some cases to thinning by evaporation or chemical reaction and in others to hardening, which prevented it from following the expansions and shrink¬ing of the heating tubing without cracking. As such failures are often rather expensive in commercial work, it was thought worth while to determine the causes. The factors influencing the behavior of molybdenum resistors used in this manner may be briefly stated as follows:

Mining is generally considered a large-scale hightech industry. However, it has estimated that about 12 million people, about 30% of the world’s total mining workforce, relied on small-scale mining for their livelihoods. During the years, the large-scale mining industry has developed best practice environmental procedures, which have been applied in diverse settings through the world. In contrast, small-scale mining is better known for its high environmental impact and the lack of safe and healthy working conditions. This paper will discuss the environmental control strategies used by the large-scale mining industry, and its applicability to small-scale mining in developing countries.

Mixtures of silver chloride and copper chloride are produced during gold refining by the Miller process. A study was carried out into the reduction with iron of a synthetic Miller chloride containing 13.64 mass% Ag and 2.42 mass% Cu. The effects of smelting temperature and time and of additions of iron and borax were investigated. The results were interpreted in terms of metal recovery and quality. Temperature did not have a significant effect on metal recovery above the melting point of the metal product. Borax additions reduced vapour losses and improved metal recovery. With excess iron it was possible to achieve silver recoveries of about 100% and copper recoveries of about 70%. The metal product contained on average 76.1 mass% Ag, 7.5 mass% Cu and 12.8 mass% Fe.

PILOTED by Cadwallader, Evans, Jr., as chairman, the Coal Division got under way Monday morning for the first of three consecutive sessions. N. F. Patton started the ball rolling with a paper on the economics of anthracite distribution, which was ably discussed by H. J. Rose, W. S. Blauvelt, and others. Mr. Patton pointed out many incongruities in freight rates, dealers' margins, and other factors which are disturbing the distribution of anthracite, one result being that trucks are hauling at least six million tons of anthracite annually, half of which is stolen. In the discussion of the papers the desirability of greater uniformity in the production and shipment of coal from month to month was urged; with larger summer price concessions as a means toward this end. "Performance Expectancy of Domestic Underfeed Stokers for Anthracite," by Allen J. Johnson, brought this important platter down to date by showing the range in capacities and efficiencies to be expected from well-made stokers, and by detailing other of their operating characteristics. THE Birmingham district of Alabama has utilized the slag from its blast furnaces consistently since the earliest development of the slag industry. Today there are producers of slag cement who started business in 1900, and who have, under a progressive policy, expanded the number of their products to meet present demands. There are producers of slag aggregates and other crushed slag products who have been successful for periods of over thirty years. There are at the present two companies, Cheney Lime and Cement Co. and the Southern Cement Co., manufacturing puzzolan cement; two companies, Birmingham Slag Co. and Woodstock Slag Co., making slag aggregates and by-products; one company, Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railway Co., a subsidiary of the U. S. Steel Corporation, producing ground open-hearth basic slag for soil conditioning. Two companies, the Sloss Sheffield Steel and Iron Co. and the Woodstock Slag Co., make slag concrete in ready-mix plants and one company, the Superock Company, manufactures fine and coarse slag aggregates under a new granulation process. No Portland cement is made with slag as an ingredient, because dolomite is used so extensively as a blast-furnace flux that the magnesium content of the slag is excessive. Sources Of Slag In the Birmingham district there are 22 blast furnaces, of which the majority are in blast. The present production is 165,000 tons of pig iron monthly; the production in 1935 was 1,297,960 gross tons1. There are also two blast furnaces at Gadsden and one ferroalloy electric furnace at Anniston. From these two sources is obtained slag to approximately 1.1 tons per ton of pig iron.

Tables based on 1985 data, which were not available in time for publication of the "1985 Minerals Yearbook," are included in this chapter; corresponding tables for 1986 are not yet available. Raw nonfuel minerals produced in the United States during 1986 had an estimated value of $23.5 billion, an increase of $0.25 billion over the 1985 value. This is the fourth consecutive year that the value has increased, and except for a de- crease in 1982, the value each year has increased since 1971, or 14 out of 15 years. Industrial minerals growth slowed from a 3% increase in value in 1985 to a 1.5% increase in 1986, reflecting the slow growth in the domestic economy. The value of industrial minerals, more than three times larger than the value of metals, easily offset the less than 0.5% decline in the value of metal mine production. Although the decline was small, this decrease makes 1986 the fourth year in the past 6 years in which a drop in the value of metal mining production occurred in the United States. U.S. production continued to lag behind the growing world production. Overall, the estimated raw nonfuel mineral production rose 1% over that of 1985. Domestic mine production of ferrous metals declined as follows, in decreasing order of production: nickel, iron ore, tungsten, and molybdenum. All remaining domestic primary nickel and tungsten mines had closed down by yearend. Nonferrous metals that similarly declined included titanium, rare-earth metals, lead, silver, zinc, and magnesium. For the second consecutive year, aluminum, produced predominantly from imported bauxite, declined in production, while imports reached record-high levels. Somewhat modest gains were made in beryllium and copper. As has been the case for a number of years, gold was a bright spot in the domestic and internation-al metal mining industry. Gold production was spurred on by the increasing usage and development of heapleaching techniques that make lower grade ores, which were previously uneconomical, profitable. Additionally, various mining companies, the U.S. Mint, individual States, and a number of foreign countries began production of gold bullion and commemorative coins. Gold output in the United States increased from 2.43 million troy ounces (revised) in 1985 to about 3.73 million troy ounces in 1986, a dramatic 54% rise.
