Preliminary bench-scale studies were carried out on the leaching of a zinc sulphide concentrate from Somincor, Portugal, and the purification of the resulting pregnant solution using solvent extraction techniques. The sulphide concentrate contained 36% Zn, 36% S, 2% Fe and 4% Cu. The leaching was carried out with sulphuric acid in the presence of ferric sulphate as the oxidant. Important leaching parameters, such as the effect of reaction time, the solid-liquid ratio, temperature and concentrations of acid and oxidant, were investigated. After leaching, the recovered solution was contacted with an organic phase containing Acorga 5640 to remove the copper. Subsequently, the removal of iron from the leaching solution was achieved with a mixture of Cyanex 272 and TBP. This solvent mixture was relatively selective for iron over zinc. The stripping of the loaded solvent was performed with 200 g/L H2SO4. Six countercurrent extraction stages achieved a separation of about 99% of the iron from the leaching solution. The iron-free leachate can be further treated to recover minor metals by cementation, and finally, zinc by liquid-liquid extraction. The advantages of the suggested process relative to the traditional jarosite process are discussed.

The Bureau of Mines is developing a new technological approach to handling the problems of fires in abandoned coal mines and waste banks. This new technology involves the accelerated combustion of "waste" coals in place (i.e., in situ) under controlled exhaust ventilation conditions, which allows for total management of the combustion products; including utilization of the heat produced" This new concept could significantly lower the costs of reducing the environmental and public safety hazards associated with waste coal fires, and could lead to the conversion of a coal waste to a coal resource. The controlled burnout technology has progressed from the laboratory stage to a full-scale field evaluation stage at the site of an abandoned-coal-mine fire. This first report describes the site selection, evaluation, and preparation, and the design and construction of the full-scale controlled burnout installation. Subsequent reports will deal with the results of the operational field trial.

This paper investigates the effect of chemical and physical operational parameters on the reverse flotation of Timbopeba itabirite iron ore in a pilot-scale pneumatic flotation cell. Operational parameters include collector and depressant dosages, feed rate, superficial gas velocity and solids concentration. Results show that increasing collector dosage results in an increase in quartz recovery, particularly for the coarser quartz where recovery increases by nearly 30%. Increasing depressant dosage results in a decrease in both quartz recovery and hematite loss, for the coarser hematite particles. Increasing the feed rate has no effect on quartz recovery or hematite loss, suggesting that the pneumatic flotation cell is not residence time constrained. Increasing the superficial gas velocity results in an increase in quartz recovery to an optimum at a Jg of around 0.6 cm/s after which it decreases significantly, particularly for the coarser particles where recovery decreases by as much as 50%. Decreasing the solids concentration does not affect quartz recovery but results in significant decreases in hematite loss. Here, fine and coarse hematite loss decreases from around 25% to 12% and 10% to 2% respectively. Superficial gas velocity and solids concentration are operating parameters which have the largest effect on the flotation performance of the pneumatic flotation cell. Results suggest that this flotation cell should be operated at relatively low superficial gas velocities and solids concentrations. However, these are pilot-scale findings and would need to be tested at an industrial-scale where different operating conditions may be optimal. The State of California, Department of Transportation is currently retrofitting a major interchange near the San Francisco area. The project is located in a highly traveled area of Oakland with light rail commuter service near many footings. Over 600 micropiles are being used in conjunction with CIDH piles for footing stabilization. A specially designed Soil Nail pile will support footings for a new light rail utility structure. Pile testing features in this contract serve as points of interest for future foundation designs. The presentation focuses on substructure issues of this incterchange retrofit. After several years of laboratory and field evaluations, it has been established that each frother has its own unique relationship among bubble size reduction, gas hold-up increase, froth stabilization and frother concentration. It has been shown that a frother?s hydrodynamic properties can be characterized using the relationship between the froth zone property froth height and the pulp zone property gas hold-up. The relationship is established in a bubble column run at a given air rate over a range of frother concentration. The use of relationships in frother selection and plant diagnostics is illustrated in a series of plant case studies.

The methods of harvesting copper from stainless steel mother plates has been investigated from fundamental and operational experience perspectives. At least five different harvesting techniques have been identified that have different effects on product quality, current efficiency, current distribution, growth morphology and ease of stripping. Each method is examined from fundamental principles to understand what occurs during the harvesting process and why the particular effects are manifested. Experience from plants operating the harvesting method is provided to show that the fundamental understanding is relevant. Best practice harvesting method and harvesting management are described.

The rapid increase in reliability, the low cost of operation, the ready application of safety devices, and the growing availability of central-station power have made the question of installing a hoist of the electric type no longer debatable. Where adequate electric power is available, there are few cases where it would be advisable to install a steam or air hoist. The type of electrical equipment depends largely on the nature of the power supply, its capacity, and the form of the power contract under which power is purchased. In a large majority of cases, the available electric power is alternating current, three phase, 60 cycles. There is, however, considerable 25-cycle power in use; and in a few instances constant voltage direct current is the only power available for a small or an occasional medium-size hoist. Where a new hoist is to be installed, the designer of the mechanical parts can readily take care of the maximum stresses likely to be imposed by the motor. Where the hoist is already installed and operated by steam or air and it is desired to substitute an electric motor for the engine, a careful check should be made to determine the advisability of using the old mechanical parts. In most cases it is better to install a complete new hoist than to attempt to use old mechanical parts. A steam engine has a definite maximum torque, which the hoist has been designed to withstand, while a motor may be able to deliver momentary torques beyond the strength of the mechanical parts of the hoist. The selection of the proper type of electrical equipment can only be made after complete information is obtained and certain calculations made to determine the capacities required. There are several methods used in making hoist calculations, but no matter what method is utilized a fair degree of familiarity with hoists and hoisting conditions is necessary before an intelligent analysis and proper selection can be made. The microstructure and tensile properties of AZ31B-H24 magnesium (Mg) alloy after friction stir welding (FSW) were evaluated. The grain size was observed to increase from approximately 5 µm to about 9 µm after FSW. The obtained Hall-Petch type relationship showed a strong grain size dependence of the hardness values. While the FSW led to about half of the yield strength of the base magnesium alloy, the ultimate tensile strength after FSW could reach about two thirds of that of the base alloy. The hardening capacity of the FSWed samples was about twice of that of the base alloy. The strain hardening exponent of the base alloy was found to be about 0.1 whereas it became larger than 0.3 for the FSWed samples. After yielding the base alloy showed a high initial and almost constant work hardening rate, corresponding to linear hardening stage II, followed by stage III with a decreasing hardening rate. Stage II linear hardening was observed to be absent in the FSWed samples.

THE problem of segregation and cavities in steel ingots is a subject which has given and is still giving metallurgists, en¬gineers, and operators matter for serious consideration.. This question has come more into prominence lately in the United States, clue largely to the desire of railroad engineers to secure a better rail than they have obtained in the past, as the service they demand is increasing in severity; and no doubt manufacturers will be able to meet what is required of them. The rails here are as good as those made in other countries, but the conditions of service and the extremes of climate are more severe and consequently more breakages occur. Various reasons have been advanced to explain why rails may not be as good in quality to-clay as in the past. Some engineers consider that modern methods of manufacturing, designed chiefly to obtain large output, tend to reduce the standard of excellence of more deliberate methods. Others think that 4-ton ingots are worse than those of 2 tons. Again, it is .stated that the 100-ton heat in one ladle is too large, and is a :step in the wrong direction in casting. My experience upon the question of the size of the ingot is that in rolling rails of from 85-to 100-lb. sections, the range of ingot is only practically such that the difference in the size does not help in the question of segregation, cavities, or blow-holes.

The subject of many discussions and technical papers in the last 20 years has been the prediction of the well-bore pressure gradients that are required to induce or extend fractures in subsurface formations. The subject merits this attention because of the frequently recurring problems that arise from an inability to predict fracture pressure gradients. Encountered in several common types of operations in the oil industry are problems associated with the prediction of formation fracture pressure gradients. When wells are being drilled in both new and old fields, lost circulation is often a very troublesome and expensive problem. Complete loss of circulation has been disastrous in some cases. Many times, such disasters could have been avoided if techniques for calculating fracture pressure gradient had been employed in the well plans, and if casing strings had been set, and mud weight plans had been followed accordingly. In areas of abnormally pressured formations, the prediction of fracture gradients during the well-planning stage is extremely important. In fact, it is as important as the prediction of formation pressure gradients, which has received a great deal of attention in recent years. There are several published methods used to determine fracture pressure gradients. However, none of these methods appears to be general enough to be used with much reliability in all areas. In 1957, Hub-bert and Willis published a classical paper that included the development of an equation used to predict the fracture extension pressure gradient in areas of incipient normal fau1ting.l Overburden stress gradient, formation pore pressure gradient and Poisson's ratio of rocks were the independent variables that were shown to control fracture pressure gradient, the dependent variable. In 1967, Matthews and Kelly published another fracture pressure gradient equation that is different from that of Hubbert and Willis in that a variable "matrix stress coefficient" concept was utilized.3 Later the same year, Costley wrote about a similar idea.5 Goldsmith and Wilson used a least-squares curve-fitting technique and field data from the Gulf Coast area to correlate fracture pressure gradient with formation pore pressure gradient and formation depth.' They noted that the fracture pressure gradient increased with increasing depth while the pore pressure gradient remained constant. In each of these cases, the problem for which a solution was sought was to determine the bottom-hole pressure gradient required to initiate or extend a fracture. Results of the previous work show that fracture pressure gradient is a function primarily of overburden stress gradient, pore pressure gradient, and the ratio of horizontal to vertical stress. There is argument for a fourth variable in that in many cases breakdown fracture pressure gradient is greater than the fracture extension pressure gradient. Physiol. 14): L215-L223, 1996.Previous investigations demonstrated that type II pulmonary epithelial cells regulate extracellular matrix deposition as a function of time in primary culture. In those studies, the matrix fraction was analyzed as a whole. The present work focused on two components of the type II cell matrix, fibronectin and laminin. These glycoproteins have differing effects on differentiation of type II cells in primary culture. Fibronectin synthesis was quantitated between day 1 and day 6 in the cells, matrix, and medium; laminin synthesis was quantitated only in the cells. Although total fibronectin synthesis was regulated as a function of time in culture, reaching its greatest value on day 2, the average proportion of newly synthesized fibronectin in the cells (35%), medium (50%), and matrix (15%) remained constant over a 6-day interval. Between day 2 and day 6, the relative abundance of fibronectin messenger RNA increased 6.5-fold. Rates of cellular laminin synthesis did not vary with time in culture. These results support a role for differential regulation of fibronectin and laminin synthesis to determine the composition of the type II cell extracellular matrix. INTERACTIONS BETWEEN THE pulmonary epithelium and alveolar basement membrane may play a role in the physiology and pathophysiology of the lung. Pulmonary epithelial cells and the alveolar basement membrane form one component of the blood-gas diffusion barrier. Integrity of this barrier is crucial to normal lung function. Specific domains of alveolar basement membrane components have been proposed to determine localization of type I and type II pulmonary epithelial cells during lung growth and development, as well as during repair of the alveolar surface after injury (13). In the injured lung, the extent of damage to the epithelium and the underlying basement membrane is thought to be a key factor to determine subsequent repair or fibrotic scarring (3)."

BEFORE describing the methods used for fabricating uranium into various shapes and sizes it is necessary to illustrate briefly the unusual conditions under which uranium has to operate when used as a fuel element in a reactor. During reactor operation, for every fission that occurs two atoms of intensely radioactive fission products are produced together with two or three neutrons. The neutrons that are ejected possess several m.e.v. of energy and when one of them strikes an atomic nucleus, that atom acquires up to 105 e.v. of kinetic energy. This is large enough to displace the atom from its lattice position and send it shooting through the crystal, displacing other atoms out of their lattice positions. The net result is that a large number of vacancies and interstitial atoms are formed within the crystal lattice which sometimes have profound effects on the physical and mechanical properties of the material in question.

THE determination of the self-diffusion coefficient of magnesium has been made possible recently by discovery1-1 of a radioactive isotope, Mg28 having a half-life of 21.3 hr,1 and subject to manufacture in useful quantity. In the present research this material was condensed from the vapor phase upon a surface of high purity magnesium. The progress of diffusion of the tracer atoms into polycrystalline magnesium was followed by machining layers and measuring the change in the intensity of radiation as a function of the distance of each layer from the surface. The self-diffusion coefficient was found to be 2.1 X 10-8 sq cm per sec at 627°C, 3.6 X 10-9 sq cm per sec at 551°C, and 4.4 X 10-10sq cm per sec at 468°C; the activation energy is about 32,000 cal per mol. Experimental Procedure Since there was no other published measurement of a diffusion velocity in any magnesium-base material, is was necessary to employ a number of new experimental techniques. The short half-life of Mg28 made it necessary to complete the entire experimental procedure within three or four days. This meant that the work had to be done where a cyclotron was readily accessible and that all operations, prior to the diffusion heat treatment, had to be so designed as to minimize their time requirements. Unusual problems were imposed also by the chemical reactivity of magnesium, its high vapor pressure, and the fact that no satisfactory method for elec-trodepositing magnesium on magnesium is presently available. Finally, the machining and handling of the easily air-borne radioactive-magnesium chips involved certain health hazards, resulting in the need for further experimental restrictions. Preparation of Mg28 The Mg28 was produced in the Carnegie Institute of Technology syncrocyclotron by the neutron spallation of chlorine.5 his involved bombarding a 2 gram crystal of high purity NaCl with a beam of 350 mev protons for a period of 2 hr, after which the crystal was dissolved in warm water and the Mg28 was concentrated and purified by chemical means (see Appendix). About 50 microcuries of Mg28 thus were obtained in the form of magnesium oxinate (8 hydroxyquin-olatc?), which was ignited in air to produce MgO. This in turn was reduced to magnesium metal vapor, by the method of Russell, Taylor, and Cooper," in the vacuum apparatus shown schematically in Fig. 1. Here the essential part is a tantalum ribbon, slightly dished to receive the MgO. The ribbon, pre- viously outgassed at high temperature, is heated to about 1700°C by passing an electric current through it, whereupon tantalum oxide is formed, magnesium vapor is released almost instantaneously, and condensed partly upon the diffusion sample. Diffusion-Sample Preparation: Hot-extruded magnesium rod, 21/32 in. round was used in making the diffusion specimens. The magnesium analyzed as follows: 0.004 pct Al, 0.027 pct Fe, 0.040 pct Mn, 0.0004 pct Cu, 0.0002 pct Ni, and less than 0.01 pct Ca, 0.0004 pct Pb, 0.0011 pct Si, 0.001 pct Sn, and 0.001 pct Zn. A brief study of the crystal texture of this material revealed a sharp fiber texture with the (001) plane roughly parallel to the extrusion axis. Cylindrical samples 1/2 in. long by 5/8 in. were machined from this rod, the end faces dressed on 3/0 emery, and lightly etched with 20 pct HC1 in water. These samples then were annealed for at least twice the intended time of diffusion, at the intended diffusion temperature, in order to stabilize the grain structure at about 1 mm average diameter. The annealing treatments were conducted in argon in the same apparatus and in the same manner as the subsequent diffusion treatments, which will be described presently. Thus, a strain-free plane surface was produced, but there remained a layer of MgO which had largely to be removed before the layer of Mg28 was deposited. Most of this layer was taken off by two light passes over 3/0 emery paper. The balance of the oxide and a thin layer of metal were then removed by etching 5 to 10 min in 4 pct nital (4 pct HNO3 and 96 pct ethyl alcohol) made with absolute alcohol. There followed immediately three quick rinses in: 1-49 1/2 pct methanol, 49 1/2 pct acetone, and 1 pct formic acid, 2-50 pct methanol and 50 pct acetone, and 3-pure benzene. This procedure is essentially that of Sturkey.7 The resulting surface, which was of almost elec-tropolished brightness, remained plane and was free of cold work. Uranium associated with phosphate deposits has been the subject of numerous investigations (1-8). In the land-pebble phosphate deposits of central Florida, uranium is found in the phosphate matrix (ore) and in the leached zone between the over-burden and matrix (1). Between 0.01 to 0.02 percent uranium is found in the leached zone, which consists of apatite and aluminum phosphate minerals (crandallite, wavellite, millisite) (Z). The primary phosphate mineral in the matrix is apatite, and the 0.005 to 0.01 percent uranium typically found in the matrix is associated with this mineral (1). It is generally believed that uranium substitutes for calcium in the apatite structure (3-5). Clay and quartz phases associated with phosphate deposits contain little uranium (1, 6), and no descrete uranium minerals have been detected in these deposits (4). A typical phosphate matrix consists of quartz, slimes (-150 mesh material) and recoverable phosphate. When the matrix is beneficiated, partition of uranium and radium takes place (9, 10). Although considerable data exists on how uranium is distributed in the phosphate deposits, no systematic study has recently been reported on the distribution of uranium during phosphate rock beneficiation. The purpose of this study was to determine how uranium is distributed in the various strata which comprise the overall land-pebble phosphate deposits, as well as how the uranium is redistributed during beneficiation of phosphate matrix. To obtain this information studies were carried out on matrix samples obtained from three different mines in central Florida. Using pilot-plant scale beneficiation, an analysis was performed on how uranium in the matrix is distributed among the pebble fractions, flotation concentrates, flotation tails, and slimes. The uranium level profile for an active mining area was also obtained. Also, since thousands of acres of slime ponds may someday become a source of both phosphate and uranium, a depth versus uranium content profile was determined for an inactive slime pond.

The challenge of managing geological uncertainty in mine planning is central to optimizing resource extraction while minimizing risks and costs. This paper introduces a novel approach to coal mine planning by integrating chance-constrained programming to address the uncertainty inherent in mining operations. The main takeaway from this work is the demonstration that focusing on reducing the variance of high-quality coal blocks, rather than low-quality ones, can lead to better blending outcomes, higher profitability and more efficient resource utilization. The study presents a case study of a coal mining operation, using chance-constrained programming to manage the uncertainty surrounding coal property predictions, specifically the predicted coke strength after reaction (CSR).

Three nutrient amendments and a biological seed inoculant were evaluated for use in establishing vegetative cover on waste rock substrates. Randomized blocks were placed on three substrates. Treatments included two types of organic fertilizer, mineral fertilizer, Azospirillum bacterial inoculant, plus controls. The seed mix consisted of native grass species adapted to low nutrient conditions. Canopy cover has been monitored for three growing seasons. Results indicate: 1) two of three substrates support plant growth following amendment with organic fertilizers; 2) organic fertilizers increase cover substantially over mineral fertilizer; and 3) Azospirillum had no effect on canopy cover.

INTRODUCTION During the nineteenth century, the federal mining law was enacted with the objective of promoting the development of the western United States by providing unrestricted access to vast areas of federal land for mineral exploration. Prior to the advent of comprehensive federal, state and local land use plans, there was little, if any, regulation or restriction of mineral exploration activities. Today, the laissez-faire policies of the past that encouraged mineral exploration have gradually given way to the public's legitimate concerns regarding environmental protection, multiple use and planned land development. As a result, the contemporary prospector confronts a maze of statutes, ordinances and regulations with which he must comply to obtain the requisite approvals and permits before commencing mineral exploration on federal, state or private lands. This presentation will provide a broad overview of the exploration permitting process. The first section of this paper recommends certain general management practices to follow when attempting to obtain exploration permits. The second section presents two hypothetical cases, one involving a drilling program on private property in California and the other involving a drilling program and the removal of a bulk sample for metallurgical tests from federal land in Nevada. The cases are used to discuss jurisdictional issues and application of certain federal, state and county laws and regulations that pertain to mineral exploration. The final section contains a brief analysis of three important recent United States Supreme Court decisions. These decisions address the scope of the federal pre-emption doctrine as it applies to activities conducted on unpatented mining claims and the constitutional limits of permissible state and local land use and zoning regulations. PERMITTING PRACTICES The environmental impacts associated with mineral exploration generally result from the construction of drill sites, roads or trenches. Consequently, after the regulatory authority has considered the issues of permissible land use, the primary emphasis of the permitting process is to address problems related to pre-construction site identification and clearance, and post-construction site reclamation. "The Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR), Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD), is continuing its High-Energy High-Displacement (HEHD) testing of field-scale shotcrete panels. A test program was developed to determine the relationship between applied force, displacement, and energy for both unreinforced and reinforced shotcrete panels. Reinforcement options consisted of synthetic macro-fibers, sprayed polyurea liners, chain-link fence, welded-wire mesh, and combinations of these products. During testing, photogrammetry was used to measure the geometric changes of the panels, including volume changes and panel cracking. These measurements were correlated with the load and displacement data, allowing visual observation to be related to the applied force and displacement. The test results provide a comparison of the mechanical performance of the various panel types and can be used by the practicing engineer to evaluate installed support based on visual observation of cracking and deformation. Visual assessment of the loading cycle and strength capacity of shotcrete in underground excavations will improve mine safety by providing a means to quantify the stability of installed shotcrete support. INTRODUCTION The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR), Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) is continuing research on the behavior of shotcrete when used as the surface support component in mining ground support systems. Ground control safety often depends on supporting, or at least containing, the ground between the rockbolts. Shotcrete and mesh, in various combinations and with other components, are often used to accomplish this (Figure 1). Maintaining support pressure during ground deformation is key to the performance of these systems, and to ensuring miner safety. However, the toughness of a ground support system–the ability to maintain strength over large deformations–is difficult to quantify. Researchers at SMRD have responded to this deficiency by designing a full-scale test device, described previously by Martin et al. [2015a], and beginning a testing program to assess the behavior of shotcrete surface support reinforced with a variety of products including: fibers, chain-link mesh, welded-wire mesh, spray-on polyurea liners, and combinations of these products. "Faculty of Mining, Ecology, Process Control and Geotechnology, Technical University, Košice, Slovakia An industrial eccentric vibratory mill was used for direct and short-time mechanochemical reduction of ilmenite concentrate (FeTiO3) and anatase (TiO2) with magnesium metal powder in order to reduce Fe and Ti resp. and hereby to convert them to the more soluble phases suitable for further hydrometallurgical processing. X-ray diffraction analysis of FeTiO3 after 60 min of milling with Mg confirmed the presence of Fe0 and Mg2TiO4 phases and for TiO2 after 180 min of milling the new TiO and MgO phases have appeared. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has detected Fe0 (metal) and Mg2+ species which are corresponding to the product of FeTiO3 mechanochemical reduction. The product of TiO2 mechanochemical reduction has revealed XPS spectral lines corresponding to Ti2+, Ti4+ and Mg2+ species on its surface. Morphology of mechanochemically reduced samples was studied by scanning electron microscopy analysis. Subsequent leaching of mechanochemically reduced FeTiO3 and TiO2 was performed in dilute HCl and H2SO4 at 80oC and compared with mechanically activated samples. The recovery of Ti has reached 100% for FeTiO3 and 79% for TiO2 after 60 min of leaching. Based on this study the flowsheet for possible processing of natural refractory titanium ores patented by author was adapted and documented. INTRODUCTION Ilmenite (FeTiO3), along with rutile (TiO2) represents the most important titanium resource necessary for titanium industry, for production of titanium metal, alloys and pigment grade TiO2 which are becoming more important and versatile for various industries such as an aircraft and aerospace, navy, chemical, automotive, medical and offshore wind industries, for machine and plant engineering and architecture as well, mainly due to high corrosion resistance. Pigment grade TiO2 is utilizing in pigment, plastic, glass, paper and rubber industries (Zhang, 2011). There are obvious research efforts for development of the potential alternatives to the expensive thermo-chemical commercial processes of titanium raw materials processing. Zhang (2011) has summarized conventional thermo- a electrochemical processes which involved a combination of pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical and electrometallurgical technologies and highlighted the improved hydrometallurgical routes promising for commercial application in the future. Such improvement could also be mechanical activation of FeTiO3, TiO2 by high-energy milling which causes their structural disordering, the changes of physical and chemical properties, consequently and has a positive effect on the dissolution kinetics (Achimovicová et al., 2014a, 2017, Baláž, 2008). The various types of mills such as a planetary ball mill, a vertical ball mill, a drum mill, an attritor were used for mechanical activation of FeTiO3 as a pretreatment process for subsequent leaching (Achimovicová et al., 2014)."
