"Abstract- The mineralogy of samples from the Wellgreen Cu-Ni-Pt-Pd deposit, Yukon Territory, is complex and the metals of interest are contained within fme-grained minerais which vary in size and mineral associations from sample to sample.The major Ni carriers are pentlandite and violarite; the major Cu carrier is chalcopyrite. About 700Jo of the major Ni carriers and 78% of the major Cu qmier will be liberated at a grind of 80% -'}f,.7 J.Uil (-500 mesh) for typical low-grade gabbro (West zone, sample No. 1). For typical ""clinopyroxenite"" (West zone, sample No. 2) and typical ""clinopyroxene-rich peridotite"" (East zone, sample No. 3) the liberation would be 71""lo and 65% for Ni, 74% and 60% for Cu, respectively. Fine grinding, however, cannot liberate the Ni contained in silicates and pyrrhotite, estimated to total24.5% for typicallow-grade gabbro (West zone, sample No. 1), 15% for typical ""clinopyroxenite"" (West zone, sample No. 2), and 12% for typical ""clinopyroxene-rich peridotite"" (East zone, sample No. 3).The principal Pt carrier (sperrylite) varies considerably in grain-size between samples and fme grinding, required to liberate the major Ni and Cu carriers, may be counterproductive in samples where sperrylite is relatively coarse-grained, as sorne would then be unrecovered (e.g. sample No. 1). In addition, sperrylite in samples No. 2 and No. 3 is closely associated with magnetite.Palladium occurs in diverse ways. It occurs in the form of several Pd minerais (e.g. sudburyite, testibiopalladite, merenskyite), as a replacement for Ni in several tellurides, antimonides and tel­ lurantimonides (e.g. melonite), or as very low concentrations in pentlandite (up to 34 ppm), chal­ copyrite (up to 9 ppm), and pyrrhotite (up to 5.6 ppm). Palladium minerais and Pd-bearing minerals are strongly associated with chalcopyrite in sample No. 1 and will thus report to a Cu concentrate. However, 22% of the total Pd is in solid solution in pentlandite in this sample and will thus report to the Ni concentrate. In samples No. 2 and No. 3, less Pd occurs in solid solution in pentlandite, and the PGM are distributed mainly among pentlandite, chalcopyrite, and magnetite in sample No. 2, and among pentlandite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, and magnetite in sample No. 3. Therefore, the feasibility of magnetic concentration should be investigated for samples like No. 2 and No. 3, in order to improve Pt and Pd recoveries.Rhodium was found to occur as rare hollingworthite, in sparse cobaltite (up to 2.7%) and, as low concentrations in chalcopyrite (to 10 ppm) and pentlandite (to 12 ppm) by proton microprobe. Iridium occurs in hollingworthite (up to 7.8%) and very rarely as the native metal or in an undefmed Re-Ir-Os-Ru alloy. Ruthenium was determined by proton microprobe analyses to occur in pentlandite (up to 13 ppm) and chalcopyrite (up to 10 ppm), in addition to rare laurite and Re alloy."

The immense commercial value of the Gayley dry-blast process has been established beyond controversy. The testimony of practical blast-furnace managers, on both sides of the Atlantic, agrees that it reduces the cost of pig-iron about $1 per ton; but from the same testimony it appears that this direct economy does not by any means cover its commercial advantages—in fact, that under conditions frequently encountered in practice, it presents other benefits of even greater immediate financial importance. To this point I shall recur in a later part of the present paper. The history of the reception given to this invention, especially on the other side of the Atlantic, has repeated an experience familiar to American engineers. First, the reports of our practice were rejected as theoretically impossible, according to generally accepted notions and formulas; then the figures were reluctantly accepted; and finally the attempt has been made to explain how they could have been obtained. As to the Gayley dry blast, me Americans have been for several years in the last stage of the discussion, and the rest of the professional world is rapidly coming to it. Meanwhile, the remark has been repeatedly made that, whatever Mr. Gayley's process may turn out to be worth, it was not an invention on his part, but simply the energetic and persevering execution of a procedure already proposed by others. This question I wish to discuss first in the present paper. I. What Did Mr. Gayley Invent? Realizing that this is not the place for detailed argument on an issue of patent law, I shall not undertake to quote and criticise the publications prior to Mr. Gayley'a first patents. Designing an underground nuclear waste repository is a complex process. Although many decisions are involved before the design is complete, the first three--what the target horizon is, what the underground boundary is, and where the entry point will be located--are important because they establish the basis for the entire repository design. Even more important than these decisions, however, is the data on which the decisions are based. Because the current data are limited, an aggressive data gathering program is needed during the next design phase to augment information about the intricate interplay among all facets of the repository design and the geologic medium in which the proposed repository is to be developed. Although unique to modern engineering enterprises, the challenges involved in designing a repository in the unsaturated zone are within current technology and engineering practices.

"Selection of a blasting agent for optimum performance is based on many variables. Often, a decision is made with regard to product cost and field testing. Defining optimum performance can be difficult, since downstream effects of fragmentation on loading, haulage, processing, and energy consumption are not immediately clear. Many operations are beginning to optimize their blasting programs “on the bench,” by utilizing information generated downstream at the loader and/or crusher. During the evaluation of a blasting agent, factors such as velocity of detonation, gas production, and sensitivity are typicallyconsidered. Alternatively, brisance (“the shattering power of an explosive material distinguished from its total work capacity”1) is not. Brisance affects the immediate area surrounding a borehole. Fractures produced here during the shock phase of detonation are believed to have an important effect on rock movement and fragmentation. "

Coal is increasingly viewed as one of the major fuel resources of this country for the remainder of this century. The need to extract a greater percentage of the coal in a given seam, together with advantages of improved safety, indicates that longwall mining will become more widely used within this time frame. A novel method of mining coal on a longwall face, utilizing high pressure water jets, is herein described. The mining machine proposed will exploit the stress conditions which exist on a longwall panel in order to achieve the required productivity while at the same time reducing respirable dust and methane ignition hazards. The water jets will excavate only the boundary of the extracted seam section, and thus the energy requirement of the machine will be minimized. The action of the machine is similar to that of an existing coal plow, except in that the wedge teeth of the plow are replaced by oscillating high pressure water jets. The machine can, therefore, cut to the depth and at the speed of existing shearer units at equivalent power levels. The removal of impact stresses from the machine will reduce downtime required for maintenance and replacement of picks and lower the load on the haulage motor of the system. The ability of the machine to increase the depth of cut without an increase in horsepower will further improve productivity when transportation systems to remove the greater production are in operation.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the Human Factors in Mining Search System (HFMSS), a computerized information retrieval system that provides relevant human factors information from journal articles, research reports, seminars, conferences, etc. in terms of 19 mining-related categories. It is the only existing data base that stresses all of the areas of human factors as applied to mining. Examples of these categories are biomechanics and work physiology, human error and human reliability, work design and task analysis, manual materials handling and back injuries, hand tools, organizational and management practices, psychological factors, and training. Although the emphasis is on literature dealing directly with mining, applicable material from other areas of research is included for those categories in which little research has been done in mining. Each record in HFMSS can be recalled by any field such as title, author, date, source, descriptive terms or key words, as well as by any words found in an abstract that describes the purpose, procedure, and results of the research. This report describes HFMSS fields and subject categories, the annotated bibliography, user's manual, and thesaurus of key words. Example printouts in both brief and full formats are included as an appendix.

"Location. The copper mines of Michigan are all in the northern part of that state on the Keweenaw Peninsula, which extends from the (Michigan) mainland for about seventy miles northeasterly toward the middle of Lake Superior. The mines occur in a belt or zone occupying the central portion of the peninsula from end to end.. The most productive mines for many years past have been those located not far from the city of Houghton in' the central part of the zone, in a section extending about ten miles southwest of Houghton and fifteen miles northeast. The most important mines in order of location, from the northeast to south¬west, are the following: Mohawk, Ahmeek, Allouez, North Kearsarge, Wolverine, South Kearsarge, Centennial, Calumet. and Hecla, Osceola, Franklin, Quincy, Hancock, Isle Royale, Superior, Baltic, Trimountain, and Champion. The first three named are in Keweenaw county and all of the others are in Houghton county. Still farther to the southwest are the Lake, Mass, Adventure, Michigan, Victoria, and White Pine mines. These are in Ontonagon county.History. The exploitation of these copper mines extends back into prehistoric times. There is little evidence that the American Indians carried on mining operations in this region in the period shortly before the advent of white men, but there is abundant evidence that the ancestors of the Indians, •or some earlier inhabitants of the region, carried on primitive mining operations. For example, Mr. S. O. Knapp, Agent of the Minne¬sota Mining Company, in the winter of 1847-48, made the first discovery of prehistoric mining. He said, after listing the seven plagues our industry is suffering, "none of these items I have listed is a sales or marketing problem. Further, none is a problem that can be relegated to long-term study by public or private research agencies. The endlessly changing pattern of mineral supply and demand offers opportunity to the alert and can bring disaster to the unwary. The discovery of ore bodies, the invention of extractive processes, the provision of new transport facilities, the political stabilization of underdeveloped areas, and many other changes can increase supply dramatically. Such new outpourings of mineral wealth from ore bodies bring fortunes to their developers, and consumers frequently find their competitive positions decidedly improved by new and cheap sources of supply. On the other hand, operators of marginal properties can find competition from newly opened high-grade mines intolerable. Consumers that have depended on the products of nearby, high-cost mines may find new, remote, low-cost supplies advantageous only to their competitors. The invention of new prospecting methods can have spectacular effects. Shortly after World War I the discovery rate of petroleum pools began to decline. The leading prospecting technique of that day, the projection downward of surface reflections of geologic structure, was proving less rewarding. Prophets foretold an oil shortage in the near future. But at that very moment scientists were perfecting the application of seismic waves to reveal underground oil-bearing geologic structures. As these geophysical methods were put into commercial use the whole outlook changed-the problem of the 1930's became how to cope with the surplus from discovery, not how to meet the ever rising demand. Many lead mines were being abandoned as unprofitable about this same time because the penalties charged by smelters for the zinc in the ores and concentrates more than counterbalanced the payments for lead and silver. The Fence Lake Project is located in the Salt Lake coal field, an extension of the San Juan Basin. Geologic formations exposed in the Project area range in age from late Cretaceous to Quaternary. Coal is encountered in the Moreno Hill Formation (upper Cretaceous). Salt River Project (SRP) followed the basic textbook approach for the exploration, regional appraisal, detailed reconnaissance, detailed surface appraisal and three dimensional sampling (physical exploration). SRP is exploring this property as a potential fuel source for the Coronado Generating Station. Therefore, for the physical exploration stage, the quality sampling program was designed from a utility company viewpoint to determine possible impacts to the Station. Exploration drilling was completed in spring, 1982; September, 1982, and summer, 1984. Engineering, environmental, and land acquisition studies were added in the Summer, 1984 Program to more closely evaluate the potential Fence Lake Project coal supply option for the Coronado Generating Station. Studies, including drilling, are ongoing-at this time.

Over the last ten years, Minemet Recherche and Metaleurop have used an approach in order to investigate and improve the operation of its Smelting furnace and its lead blast furnaces. This approach gives importance- to three complementary means of investigation : - Probing campains in the industrial furnace (temperature and gas analysis profiles), - Chemical and physical modeling (coke combustion, sinter reduction modes, flows patterns, ?.) , - Staged mass and heat balances or kinetic model. This allows to define the limits of operation of each blast furnace and to predict the influence of operating parameters on the furnace performances. For the zinc Imperial smelting furnace, the probing results show the existence- of both an Isothermal reserve zone at 1015ºc and a chemical equilibrium between ZnO and gas which makes possible the use of a practical model for heat and material balances. In particular, very good prediction on the influences of operating parameters can be made. On the contrary, for lead blast furnaces, the probing results show that the thermal and chemical equilibria are not reached. Consequently, classical models for staged heat and mass balances are not sufficient. The use of the other means allows then to characterize the specific influences of operating parameters on the thermal instabilities of these furnaces and their allowed limits.

Foreword Following the explosion in the Hillcrest mine, which occurred in the evening of Sunday, September 19th, 1926, and in which two men lost their lives, the writer was invited by the Hon. J.E. Brownlee, Premier of Alberta, to conduct an investigation into the causes of the disaster, and to make such recommendations as seemed advisable with a view to minimizing as far as possible the chance of future explosions in this and similar Alberta coal mines. Accordingly, the mine was visited, and extensive investigations were made underground on October 21st, 2.2.nd, and 25th, in company with Mr. John T. Stirling, Chief Inspector of Mines for Alberta, Mr. Moses Johnson, District Inspector for the Crowsnest Pass District, Mr. J as. A. Richards, Inspector of Mines, Edmonton, and also Mr. Thomas Davies, manager, and other officials of the Hillcrest mine. Hearings of the coroner's inquest were also attended on October 20th and 23rd, when testimony regarding the explosion was given by various witnesses. The following paper summarizes my general observations in tracing the place of origin of the explosion, and my efforts to determine the cause of ignition. Certain recommendations arc also made, and the writer invites discussion on these and the other matters dealt with in the paper.

Artificial Intelligence has a long history but is currently coming strongly into focus with new advancements. This leads to questions many people are asking: what exactly is AI, how can it be used effectively in mining operations, and what foundation is required to make AI implementations successful? In mining, many AI applications exist, from drill pattern optimization to predictive maintenance. However, many implementations struggle due to data integration challenges. Mining operations generate large amounts of data from many sources, such as fleet management systems, drill sensors, process control systems, and laboratory results. Unfortunately, this data often exists in silos where it’s difficult to get it out, making AI applications unable to leverage it. Worse still, tools that use AI don’t always provide their data back to the system, creating even further data silos. All these problems make it hard to take advantage of the data at the mine, slowing down and reducing the effectiveness of AI. This paper presents a comprehensive approach to organizing mining data using an AI-ready knowledge graph system. We will first explore the evolution of AI in mining, from early expert systems to modern machine learning applications. Then, we will detail how a knowledge graph can integrate business context, operational data, and AI models into a cohesive system that enables more effective AI implementations across mining operations. The proposed method has been developed considering both the unique data challenges faced by the mining industry, while also considering best practices learned from the AI field at large. By following this approach, it’s possible to better utilize existing data, getting higher quality and more complete results faster, and in a way that’s reusable and composable.

Shaft sinking survey practices in Southern African mining operations have been refined over many decades to meet the stringent accuracy, safety, and productivity demands of deep vertical excavation. However, much of this specialised knowledge remains poorly documented, and the decline in new shaft sinking projects presents a risk that these proven practices may be lost to future generations of mine surveyors. This paper reviews and synthesises current survey control methodologies employed during shaft sinking operations, with particular emphasis on the establishment and maintenance of surface and underground control networks, shaft verticality control, and elevation transfer. Traditional techniques, such as plumb-wire plumbing systems, steady brackets, and calibrated steel shaft tapes, are discussed in detail, alongside quality control principles and common sources of error affecting coordinate transfer. The paper further examines the integration of modern technologies, including total station resections and LiDARbased laser scanning, highlighting their benefits, limitations, and practical constraints in active shaft environments. By documenting both established and emerging practices, this review aimsto preserve critical institutional knowledge, support consistent survey standards, and provide guidance for accurate spatial control throughout the shaft sinking lifecycle.

From a mining point of view the Portland Cement Industry falls logically into the Industrial Minerals Division. Portland Cement manufacture requires four principal materials, lime, silica, alumina and iron. The usual source of lime is limestone. Silica sources include clay, shale, quartz, sandstone and sand. Alumina is usually provided by selecting a silica source with a suitable alumina content such as clay and shale. "Cement Rock" is occasionally found in which all four ingredients are found in natural combination or sufficiently close that only minor adjustments are required. In the absence of iron oxides a white cement can be produced. All raw materials used in Canada contain some iron and in most plants further minor quantities of iron are added to promote fluxing, hence the typical grey colour of Portland cement. The modern period in cement manufacturing started in 1824 when Joseph Aspdin of England patented a process for the manufacture of a modified hydraulic cement which he called "Portland Cement". Hydraulic cements are cements that harden under water. Although natural cements, made by calcining and grinding natural argillaceous limestone were produced in Canada as early as the 1830's, Portland cement was not produced in Canada until 1890, about 18 years after it was first made in the United States.

The paper investigates the historical information relating to spontaneous heatings which have occurred within the area from 1955 to date. From this information the seams most liable are identified and the location within the workings is enumerated, together with the possible reason for the occurrence of the heatings. Details are given of the precautions taken during development, working and withdrawal. Sampling procedures are outlined and the interpretation of the results is discussed. Reference is made to the various types of material and techniques employed in both preventing and combating heatings and examples are given of their relative cost and the operational experience obtained. Special observations are made on the changes in mining techniques and their influence on spontaneous combustion.

"The intact rock constant, mi, is one of the three basic input parameters required for the widelyused Hoek-Brown failure criterion. Values for the constant should ideally be determined by statistical analysis of laboratory test data. In this paper the influence of the inclusion or exclusion of tensile test data on derived values is discussed. We firstly investigate the relationship between direct tensile strength (DTS) test values and Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) test values based on a literature search, finding that the correlation between the two test types is DTS = 0.9*BTS, independent of the lithology being tested. Secondly, using the shear strength database of Douglas (2002), we examine the influence of confining pressure range and the inclusion or exclusion of DTS and BTS test values on calculated values of mi.Chief amongst the influences was the exclusion of tensile data in the calculation procedure, particularly when the Hoek triaxial confining stress range requirement (?3?max = 0.5?c) was not satisfied. Based on a reasonable 1:1 relationship between R (the ratio of unconfined compressive to tensile strength), use of actual tensile data in the calculations for the Hoek brown failure criterion is considered to be a simpler and more robust approach to the use of a tensile cutoff based on empirical criteria such as that of Fairhurst (1964). We advocate the fitting a failure curve using compressive and tensile test data as the most reliable means of calculating mi, while at the same time satisfying requirements as originally advocated by Hoek relating to the appropriate triaxial confining stress range (?3?max = 0.5?c) and sufficient (>5) evenlyspread data points. In the absence of triaxial data the use of R provides a practical means of obtaining estimates of mi that are more robust than guideline values."

The application of cemented paste backfill (CPB) with alkali-activated slag and phosphogypsum (ASP) can contribute to the sustainable development of the mining industry. The effects of PG content, NaOH content, solid content, and waste rock-rod milling sand (W/R) ratio on workability, unconfined compressive strength (UCS), and setting time of ASP-CPB were investigated in this paper. The results showed that the workability of ASP-CPB decreased with PG content and NaOH content. Compared to OPC-CPB, ASP-CPB exhibited better workability and higher long-term (7 days and 28 days) strength at predetermined backfill formulations and curing times. The mid-term strength of ASP-CPB first increased and then decreased with PG content, while the short-term strength (3 days) decreased gradually due to the influence of soluble acidic impurities. Excessive NaOH will harm the strength of ASP-CPB, possibly due to the swelling effect of the reaction products (ettringite and sulfate). Strength and setting time increased and decreased with solid contents, respectively. Moreover, the compactness of the mixture has an important effect on strength and workability. The workability and strength of ASP-CPB reached the minimum and maximum values at a W/R ratio of 5:5, respectively. Pollutant index detection indicated that most of the pollutants in ASP-CPB leachate met the discharge standard, which proved that ASP-CPB is an effective method to recover PG. The results of the research will provide theoretical guidance for the efficient recovery of PG resources and support the achievement of safe, clean, and efficient mining.
