University research in the U.S. consists of three components; faculty, funding, and graduate students or postdoctorals. Individual faculty is the unit area of research that is not limited, although faculty normally performs research in their areas of expertise. Faculty can and often do join with other faculty in multidisciplinary research. Faculty research achievements or reputation reflects the standing of the program and university. Therefore, research is highly encouraged and regarded within the university community. Graduate students are the work force of faculty research and doctoral students are preferred for high-quality products. The federal government provides the majority of funding sources, with the remainder coming from industry, state government and others. Compared with other engineering majors, the mining engineering programs in the U.S. are unique in that they: ? Are small in terms of the number of programs, and number of faculty and students in each program. ? Serve a single industry (i.e., mining) and are thus cyclic, reflecting the up and down economic state of the mineral industries. Enrollment statistics during the past 70 years show that a cycle consists of approximately 30 years with the first 10 years up, followed by 20 years down. ? Have curriculum designed to emphasize and thus serve for either the coal, hardrock or industrial minerals industries. These unique features make mining engineering programs hard to manage in university environments. Funding for mining research has relied primarily on the federal government, i.e., the former U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and currently the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The mining industry does not directly perform, nor sponsor research projects. Federal funding provides primarily in-house research. In the last four decades, federal extramural funding was only available when Congress appropriated extra funding in response to mine disasters. For instance, a string of coal mine explosions in the mid to late 1960s prompted Congress to enact the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. It provided massive research funding from 1970 to 1983 covering all mining-related subject areas. From 1984 to 1995, federal extramural research funding was minimal, through two generic mineral technology research centers for selected mining engineering programs. In 1995, Congress closed the USBM and transferred the health and safety of miners program to NIOSH. Federally-funded extra-mural research practically stopped from 1995 to 2006. In 2006 and 2007, in response to a series of disasters, including those at Sago, Aracoma, Darby and Crandall Canyon, Congress again appropriated funding for short-term re-search in selected subjected areas such as underground tracking and communication, mine seal and ventilation, and deep cover pillar extraction. Therefore, to develop a meaningful academic mining research program during the past three decades, funding needed to be drawn from other sources such as the mining industries. A ?meaningful? program requires a sufficient amount of consistent funding in order to produce effective results. A review of federally funded extramural research pro-grams shows that a great majority of contractors/grantees are private entities, involving few mining engineering faculty. This, in part, is due to the fact that mining engineering involves so many different subjects. Therefore, a small mining engineering program can only have resources to cover teaching in the core subject areas (i.e., extraction, ground control, ventilation and material handling), at best. In this respect, a successful and meaningful academic mining re-search effort requires strong supporting programs such as geology/geophysics, structural (applied) mechanics, material sciences, compute/software application, etc. Therefore, academic mining research had to rely on private sources such as coal companies, in the author?s case, for sustained funding in the past three decades. Relying on funding from coal companies presents several problems. The projects were small and considered routine consulting projects requiring practical answers in a very short time frame. This is not really suitable for academic research, for which the major goal of research is the training of graduate students. These short-term projects vary with time and mines, most of which are driven by U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) or U.S. Office of Surface Mining (OSM) regulations. So sustained funding under such condition requires broad experience of coal mining operations, which is also not well-aligned for academic research where faculty tends to specialize in a narrow field. Consequently, under such a funding environment, it is important to keep in mind how to develop long-term academic research objectives from conducting small short-term consulting projects that require quick solutions. In other words, how to look beyond the quick answers and to develop broader and more fundamental theories applicable to other situations that advance the-state-of-the-art. In order to achieve this objective, faculty must act as the connecting link because graduate students come and go. Faculty must know the detail of each project such that they know what are the important unsolved problems, what to assign to specific graduate students and how to guide the next group of graduate students to continue the development and advance the mining science. Under such funding environments, the most effective way to conduct academic mining research and ensure quality products is to maintain a research group consisting of postdoctoral, PhD, and MS students of various rankings such that the senior ranks can assist in guiding the junior ranks, especially the senior PhD students who are experts in their dissertation research areas. A weekly meeting should be scheduled for the group in which problems encountered in the research are discussed or individuals take turns presenting the progress of their projects. During each meeting, the importance of open discussion on scientific issues must be emphasized. Thus, opinions are encouraged, debated, and rejected or accepted. Students are encouraged to listen to and analyze other points of view. In addition to training of this thought process, the meeting also helps identify the strengths and weakness of each individual. As the subject of research expands over time, the group?s and, thus, the faculty?s research experience broadens. With this approach, companies can get the quick answer they desire from expert research experience and the faculty can engage in meaningful applied and basic research that is most relevant to routine mine operations. The end result is that companies will have a high regard for academic mining research.

THOUGH the fall meeting of the Coal Division was held in the heart of the anthracite section, at Hazleton, Pa., the bituminous industry was well represented also, and the two groups found much common ground for discussion. The' technical part of the program was confined to two sessions in the morning and afternoon of the first day, Friday, Oct. 14, the evening and the following day being reserved for field trips and social functions. The attendance more than met the expectations of those in charge of the arrangements; there seemed no hint of depression here.

Empresa Nacional de Minería (ENAMI) is dedicated to the promotion of small and mid scale Chilean mining industry. Paipote, ENAMI Copper Smelter, processes a variety of mineral products as the result of this promotion. The mineral products characterize a wide variation of copper, iron, sulfur and precious metals content as well as the significant dispersion in the content of impurities, such as arsenic, antimony and bismuth. The Smelter Modernization Program, initiated in1997, introduced a series of technological and operational changes. The development of operational planning and control strategies was necessary to optimize the blending of a wide variety of concentrates and the control of metallurgical processes in order to ensure the stable operation, fulfillment of environmental regulations and the quality of produced copper anodes. A permanent optimization process carried out in the last decade led to the permanent increase of the smelting capacity and the production of anodes and sulfuric acid. Additionally, introduced improvements affected the smelter efficiency and metallurgical recovery, demonstrating the possibilities of the optimization of a small smelting facility reflected in good metallurgical and economic results. This paper presents the smelter evolution, introduced technological and process control changes as well as incorporated new reactors and equipment as a continuous process of optimization.

The DeHoff method of determining the size distribution of ellipsoid-shaped, second-phase particles has been applied to the spheroidization of cementite in a eutectoid steel. The surface area of Precipitates determined from the various size fractions in the distribution was correlated with surface-area measurements based on the number of intersected interfaces on a random lest line. The precipitate particles were found to be oblate ellipsoids with an axial ratio of about 0.90. The size distributions were found to be log-normal. A method is proposed whereby the shrinkage of small particles and growth of large ones can be determined from the experimental data. The experimental data are compared to previously proposed mathematical models describing diffusion-controlled kinetics and various types of interface-controlled kinetics. The experimental growth and shrinkage rates are considerably slower than those predicted by diffusion-controlled kinetics. The best fit is obtained for a model describing interface-controlled kinetics limited by the rate of formation of cementite at the growing interfaces where the interfacial reaction rate is proportional to the solute thermodynamic activity gradient across the surface. THE subject of spheroidization of second-phase particles has been considered previously by other investigators. Livingston1 has studied the precipitation of the cobalt-rich phase from copper alloys containing 0.7 to 3.2 wt pet Co. His results indicate that the average particle size increases as the cube root of the heat treatment time in accord with diffusion-controlled kinetics.'-' Komatsu and rant' in their studies of the growth of SiO2 in a dispersion-strengthened copper-silica alloy found that the initial growth of SiO2 proceeded by diffusion-controlled growth and later stages were limited by interface-controlled growth. The values of the activation energy obtained for the interface- controlled process led them to the conclusion that the process was limited by the dissociation of SiO2 at the shrinking interface. The transition from diffusion-controlled growth to interface-controlled growth was characterized by a particle size which varied with the heat-treatment temperature. It is also interesting to note that the particle-size distribution as found by Komatsu and Grant exhibits log-normal behavior when replotted on log-probability coordinates. Dromsky, Lenel, and Ansell9 have observed the growth of Al2O3 particles having a mean free path of about 1.5 to 13 µ. Their photomicrographs indicate that the Al2O3 particle sizes were larger than those observed by Komatsu and Grant. Dromsky, Lenel, and Ansell concluded that the Al2O3 coarsened by an interface-controlled growth mechanism limited by the solution of A12O3 at the shrinking interfaces. Bannyh, Modin, and Modin10 have studied the spheroidization of a eutectoid steel (0.83 wt pet C). Their spheroidization (tempering) treatments were carried out in the range from 210o to 700°C for times between 1.5 sec and 20 hr. Measurements of mean particle size as a function of time indicated a cube root of time dependence of size at 700°C, in agreement with previous analyses of diffusion-controlled kinetics.2°7 At lower temperatures, the time dependence was less than the one-third power. It is important to note that, although mathematical models of growth* considering particle-size distribution have been available, measurements of only mean particle size have been carried out. DeHoff11 has presented a quantitative metallography technique which is applicable to the determination of the size distribution of ellipsoids of constant shape. This method is applicable to both oblate and prolate ellipsoids of all ratios of minor to major axis and is based upon an extension of Saltykov's analysis12 of the distribution of spheres of varying size. DeHoff's analysis is based upon measurements of the minor axis of the particles on a random plane of polish in a unit area. This method provides a measure of the number of ellipsoids in various size ranges per unit area. As pointed out by DeHoff, such measurements may be used to obtain surface area and total precipitate volume data. LoRa (Long Range) is a low-power, long-range wireless communication technology that has gained significant research interest for its potential use in multi-hop linear wireless sensor networks (LWSNs) for underground mines. These networks deploy LoRa-enabled sensor nodes in underground mines, together with LoRa repeaters placed along mine tunnels to relay sensor data to a LoRa gateway, which connects to a backend network for application-level processing. Since the packets generated by sensor nodes farthest from the gateway have to hop through many repeaters, their probability of successfully reaching the gateway is significantly lower due to the higher chance of packet collisions compared to sensor nodes closer to the gateway, resulting in a lack of network fairness for the sensor nodes. In this paper, we first present an algorithm to improve the fairness of a LoRa LWSN by grouping neighbouring nodes and adjusting the number of packet re-transmissions and transmission intervals for each group. Then, we demonstrate that the fairness of a simulated LoRa LWSN can be improved by approximately 500 per cent by applying our algorithm. We verify our algorithm with network simulations under different network traffic levels and grouping strategies, obtaining fairness improvements in each scenario. Our algorithm and results will pave the way towards developing highly fair LWSNs for underground mining applications.

"INTRODUCTION Toxic gases in the products from the detonation of explosives are one of the hazards in blasting underground. Investigations by the Bureau of Mines 4/5/ have shown that the oxygen balance of the explosive is an important factor in the control of toxic gases. This balance is considered in determining the composition of modern metal-mining explosives for blasting underground, and application of the concept has reduced the volume of toxic gases generated.The chemical nature of the material being blasted also influences the composition of the toxic gases produced. Under some conditions of blasting in massive pryrite, unsafe concentrations of sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide have been found.Experiments with the O-J apparatus 8/ have shown that there is an increase in the volume of carbon monoxide in the gaseous products when permissible explosives are detonated in contact with coal dust. Thus, reactive materials of a reducing nature adjacent to explosives loaded in drill holes may decrease the effective oxygen balance of the explosive and cause the volume of toxic gases to increase.Several blasting accessories of reducing nature have been introduced recently for use in coal or metal mines or tunnels. In practice these are loaded adjacent to the explosive where conditions favor reaction with the products of detonation. The effects of this loading on the gaseous products obtained from the shot are indicated in this report. Broad consideration was not given the efficiency, usefulness, or over-all safety of these devices, but the practical significance of the hazard resulting from increased volume of carbon monoxide is discussed."

"Electrowinning of Ti have been investigated in a LiF-NaF-KF melt including K2TiF6 at 773-923K by applying electrochemical oxidation ofH2 gas as an anodic reaction. The cathodic behavior of titanium and the anodic behavior of H2 gas were studied by voltammetry in detail to clarify the electrolytic condition for the process. The electrowinning of Ti was carried out by potentiostatic _electrolysis. Steady electrolysis was achieved under the suitable electrolytic condition without breaking out the anode effect. Titanium metal was electrodeposited on a Ti cathode though the deposits were usually powdery. It is concluded that this process is potential if the morphology of the deposit can be improved.IntroductionTitanium has such good properties as high specific strength and high corrosion resistance. However, the availability of Ti has been limited because the price of Ti is much higher than those of other common metals, such as Fe and Al. The production process of Ti ingot from its ore is rather intricate so that the production cost is high. If the simpler process is developed, the production cost should be retrenched. Titanium metal is usually produced by the Kroll process, which consists of the electrowinning of Mg metal in molten salt and the chemical reduction of TiCl.i by Mg metal. The Kroll process is very elabrate, but not simple. Because the chemical reduction ofTiCl4 by Mg metal is highly exothermic, a considerable amount of energy is wasted.Titanium metal can be electrowon in molten salt bath in principle. A simpler and more effective process than the Kroll process may be realized by the direct electrowinning so that the electrowinning of Ti metal has been studied widely[ 1]. Some researchs progressed to a pilot plant stages [2], but the electrowinning of Ti has not been industrialized yet."

At Elkol, Wyo., about 80 miles northeast of Ogden, Utah, the Kemmerer Coal Co. and the Utah Power and Light Co. are involved in a joint venture that will soon see 1 million tons of coal going "out by wire" to Ogden. Kemmerer, owner of a multi-seam strip mine, and the utility, now building a steam power plant adjacent to the mine site, expect to begin initial power generation by February 1963. Although capable of producing only 150,000 kw at that time, this plant is expected to be ultimately enlarged to 500,000-kw capacity which will require about 2 million tons of coal annually. The deposit consists of more than 30 seams of coal, usually varying in thickness from 2 to 40 ft, and separated by beds of sandstones and shales. In certain areas the aggregate thickness of all the coal seams measures 300 ft. The thickest and most spectacular of these seams is the lowest one, referred to as the No. 1 seam, which is 118 ft thick in some places.

Applied geophysical methods such as the surface seismic method have been applied for many years and in many places, mainly for oil exploration and to a lesser extent for mineral deposits? exploration in sedimentary basins. The seismic method fundamental is based on the variations of acoustic impedance in a layered earth model and such variations at each main geological interface create reflected waves that are processed and imaged in order to output a clear picture of the subsurface structure. The geology of South Africa was historically, and even until recently, considered as unfit for seismic exploration and the mines were always reluctant to spend any portions of their exploration budgets on these techniques. Hard rocks and high P-waves velocities were creating quite a hopeless model for any mine geologist or geophysicist (if any), unsuitable for the proper use of seismic waves to image their subsurface problems. Boreholes were considered the only reliable tool to derive a geological image of the mine structural features and were linked sometimes with surface methods such as aero-magnetism. The obvious flaw of this methodology was the inability to derive a continuous image from a discrete set of measurement points. Surface 3D seismic is the tool that gives a reliable solution from the initial model extracted from the boreholes, as even the aero-magnetism mapping gives a flat image, unable to show any depth correlation from well to well. The first 3D surface seismic surveys were recorded in the early Nineties only for the gold mines of the Witwatersrand, after a series of serious new shaft sinking failures. The wrong geological locations of these shafts resulted in financial loss of several hundred million rands. The era of3D seismic just started in South Africa and till 1997, all seismic done in the country was for gold exploration with geological target depths close to the oil exploration average depth of investigation. A very important breakthrough was reached when the depth accuracy of the seismic image was tested in real scale as the stopes were surveyed. An error of amplitude of 20 m was usual when true depth was compared with the seismic image predicted depth and shape. This accuracy, completely unknown in oil exploration, started to gain supporters of seismic methods in the mining community but the cash problems and the concentration/disappearance of gold mines in the late Nineties, led to the belief that seismic would be just a very short exploration activity for the mining sector. ort exploration activity for the mining sector. But starting in 1998 with Impala, a tremendous and continuous 3D surface seismic activity occurred in the platinum mining sector. The seismic world got used to new terms such a Merensky and UG2, which have replaced the VCR and black reef. If the primary expectation of platinum surface 3D seismic was to determine and ascertain new shaft locations, as for the gold mines, the quality of seismic data led the mine geologists to require smaller and smaller imaging of geological objects. In addition to the main structural image, small faults, potholes, and shear zone were common expectations of platinum seismic. In a constant velocity environment, what saved the day was the sharp density contrast between the PGM reef and the embedding geology. A good contrast of impedance exists in the whole Bushveld and is sufficient to have enough reflected waves from the PGM main layers to build a high quality seismic image of the subsurface. Recent advances in technology have led in less than 10years to major improvements in the seismic acquisition by using high frequency vibrating seismic sources, but also in processing and interpretation. With these latest improvements, seismic can detect objects of 7.5 m size, either fault throws, flexures, etc. The PGM formations of the Eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex are now accessible for seismic imaging, with cost per square kilometre comparable to the borehole cost of the same surface unit. The economically acceptable seismic surveys can be used for UG2 structural imaging up to a depth of 210 m below surface. Linked with borehole information, 3D seismic today offers a wide range of information for mine development: structural imaging, small fault detection, pothole and shear zone identification. All users of 3D seismic have also used this technique as a tool in the process to qualify their mineral reserves and especially from the category ?inferred? to the category ?measured?. Junior mining companies, in the feasibility stage of their projects, are also quite eager to use seismic as a reserve certification tool, when they present financial statements to future potential investors. The current high demand on platinum, pushes the seismic towards new technologies to be implemented in order to improve the final image. Using surface and borehole seismic together or acquiring seismic surveys with multi-component receivers have been just introduced in South Africa. In less than 10 years, surface seismic by adapting its methods to the special case of the Bushveld, became a mandatory step in mine development and ore resources evaluation. As part of the ?seismic? world we are proud to be a major player the ?surge? of platinum exploration and production in these last years and we will certainly increase our synergy with the mine sectors in the exciting coming years.

The production of kaolin and calcium carbonate in North America exceeds 13 million tons sold into higher value market segments. With a few exceptions, the markets supplied exhibit mature growth rates. In some market sectors, technology changes have and continue to occur shifting pigment-type consumption and growth. New sources of supply will impact current businesses. New product and process developments for kaolin and calcium carbonates are continuing. Each of these issues is examined in developing a view of the future for kaolin and calcium carbonate in North America.

This chapter deals with the use of industrial minerals in insulating materials used to control our thermal and acoustical environment. There are numerous products on the market used for thermal and acoustical insulation; they consume substantial quantities of a variety of industrial minerals. Following is a brief review of the theory and function of insulating materials. Acoustics is the science of sound, and architectural acoustics deals with sound in buildings. If this definition is broadened to include transportation vehicles, it is this end use for which acoustical insulations are primarily manufactured. Sound is defined as the auditory sensation in the ear, or the disturbance in a medium which causes this sensation. Acoustical insulation is used to reduce or eliminate noise, defined as unwanted sound. Noise control may be accomplished by the reduction of sound radiation at the source, by utilizing sound reducing construction methods such as staggered studs, etc., to control sound transmission, or by using sound absorbing material on walls, ceilings, and floors (Rossing, 1985). Acoustical insulation functions by absorbing the energy in sound waves in a porous material. As the sound waves penetrate the pores, they are dissipated by reducing the amplitude of vibration of the air molecules by contact with the pore walls, with subsequent conversion of the sound energy to heat energy. Acoustical insulation is generally highly porous, 1.3 cm or greater in thickness, and has interconnected pores. Acoustical insulating materials include fibrous vegetable or mineral matter and cellular organic and inorganic material, such as natural or manufactured foams (Sabine and Moulder, 1979). Acoustical materials are most commonly porous boards and tiles, which are often composite materials with perforated facing. Roof insulation board and lightweight concrete can also contribute to the absorption of noise. Thermal insulation is defined as material used to control the flow of heat. It may be used for heat control from low cryogenic temperatures (below -100°C) to in excess of 2 200°C for applications such as ablative shields for spacecraft. Heat transfer occurs by conduction, convection, or radiation. Conduction is the transfer of heat without the movement of the conducting medium, as through a metal. Heat convection through a liquid or gas takes place by movement of the medium. Forced convection is the basis for heating and cooling equipment, utilizing pumps or blowers to transfer the thermally conditioned fluid. Free or natural convection occurs due to density differences in the fluid. Radiation is the transfer of energy in space (Eckert, 1985). Conduction of heat through a solid is reduced by insulating the body with foams, or fibrous or small celled granular material. Heat transfer through a gas (convection) is controlled by creating many small pores which inhibit the movement of the fluid, substituting a gas of low thermal conductivity, or evacuating the space. Heat radiation can be reduced by the use of materials that reflect or absorb the energy (Glaser, 1967). Thermal insulating materials may be vegetable or mineral fibers, organic or inorganic particles, or foams with small pores, generally used to form a low density thermal barrier. They may be blocks, poured lightweight cementitious materials, bricks, etc.

A discussion of fillers would not be complete without allotting adequate time to that unique and different mineral material, diatomaceous silica. Historical references to its use challenge the aesthetic aspect of man's curiosity; whereas modern scientific tools have provided a dimension of measurement that has motivated many of its more recent applications. A brief review of what is already known is in order. The diatom is a unicellular, plant-like, microscopic organism, related to the algae1. Its natural function appears to be that of a food for other marine or lacustrine organisms, The diatom's "claim to fame" from an industrial viewpoint is dependent on the fact that it secretes an opaline siliceous skeleton that must survive, chemically and structurally, the geologic processes that caused its formation in the first place; its subsequent demise, burial, consolidation, and alteration; and finally, its ultimate exploitation by man--in somewhat that order. In addition to its siliceous nature, the skeletal structure of the diatom possesses a variety of shapes, patterns, and sizes that have not only been the intrigue of microscopists for decades, but have served to set diatomite apart as an industrial mineral; and have reserved for it applications that cannot be satisfied by any other material. Its chemical inertness, its intricate structure, and its intrinsic hardness-coupled with fineness and friability-- are generally known and have accounted for its application in a wide range of filtration and filler uses. The increasing use of the electron microscope has considerably expanded our knowledge of heretofore unseen secondary and tertiary structure of submicron dimension in the diatom valve. The development of electro-sensing methods of particle size measurement which seem to supersede sedimentation and microscopic techniques has portrayed size distribution in a more realistic light. Interest in the surface chemistry of these silica structures has further strengthened our understanding for certain uses. Thus, new tools and ideas have made possible the introduction of diatomite into such sophisticated technologies as that of chromatographic supports, its improved utility in paint applications for the control of gloss and sheen, and its usefulness in the entirely new concept of "Dry Acid Concentrates." Each of these applications has been discussed elsewhere before people particularly interested in analytical chemistry, in paint, and in liquid handling, respectively, where the diatom has been a means to an end. The emphasis here, before the mining fraternity, however is on diatomite as a raw material with reference to the uses mentioned above. It is therefore toward an awareness and understanding of diatomite properties pertinent to these newer filler applications that this paper is directed.

Introduction People, systems, methods, and organization make up maintenance productivity. Methods promote efficiency in operations, systems ensure consistency and continuity, and organization maintains direction and control. The common denominator in these techniques, though, is people. Management systems can be technically correct, but fail to work because management systems do not work by themselves - people make them work. Therefore, the foundation for mine maintenance productivity must begin with the people involved. Traditionally, the emphasis placed on mine maintenance, as opposed to production, is not proportional to the impact that maintenance has on a mining operation. The performance and productivity of mine maintenance substantially affects the operating costs, revenues, and profits of the mine. The mining industry has recently experienced a period of economic depression. While it has created financial problems in all segments of the industry, it has caused the industry to focus on the need for improved productivity. Mining companies that have made investments in productivity during this period will have a competitive edge during the recovery, and mine maintenance may be the best place to put that investment. Future lost production and maintenance cost problems can be avoided if mine management has the foresight to seize the opportunities that now exist. Background Technological improvements over the last 30 years have been dramatic in the industry. Before these changes, mining equipment was not very sophisticated. So maintenance needs were not very sophisticated. Maintenance people were not required to have any formal training in mechanical or electrical skills. At many mines there was no formal maintenance organization. The mechanic was a part of the section crew and received direction from the face boss. Mine maintenance was not a function, it was a task. Technological change in mining came about in response to an expanding economy and greater demand for mined products. The past 20 years brought about a change in the kind of individual needed to mine ore and coal, and an even greater change in the person needed to maintain equipment. Equipment went from mechanical and pneumatic to complicated electrical and hydraulic. Maintenance progressed from being a task to being a function. Types of Mechanics Mine maintenance workers can be grouped into three categories based on experience: mechanics with more than 20 years, five- to 10-years, and less then five years. These groupings have influenced mine maintenance productivity. The 20-plus mechanic has been the foundation of the maintenance force. He had no formal training and his skills were acquired on the job. As new equipment was introduced, he learned to repair it by trial and error. Not all of what he learned was correct. Personal initiative and conscientiousness are characteristics of this group. They have experienced the bad times and the good, and appreciate the opportunity to work. The five- to 10-year group worked with the older, more experienced mechanics to acquire maintenance skills. These mechanics came in during industry boom times, and many progressed quickly by being in the right place at the right time. Many in this group have difficulty with diagnostic trouble-shooting, and depend on changing out parts to identify problems. This group is generally more mobile and less apt to have a strong work ethic. Mechanics with about five years experience have vocational training, some formal education or basic skills training. Like the five- to 10-year group, these miners are mobile and tend to move readily to satisfy their changing needs. These two younger groups are less apt to feel any loyalty to the employer or obligation to be productive. Their attitudes and abilities reflect the influence of their general age groups, and has a definite impact on mining productivity. Past Requirements In the 1960s, the basic requirements for a maintenance supervisor was that he be a top mechanic, get along well with the men, and be a hustler and improviser. He learned the details of new equipment as repairs were needed. Oftentimes, this individual would be the only person on the property with the ability to read prints, use diagnostic testing equipment, and troubleshoot using an analytical approach. This approach to maintenance is sufficient when the equipment design is reasonably uncomplicated. Management Changes As technology progressed, organized labor gained strength, government regulation increased, and the job of supervising and managing people had to change. An examination was made of the filtration characteristics of a haematite slurry using a range of polyacrylamide based flocculants in solutions containing up to 3 per cent sodium chloride. The polymers used were "high" and "Iow" molecular weight and had from 0 to 40 per cent charged groups.Increasing charge density tends to reduce the dose required to achieve optimum performance measured by filtration rate and by cake moisture. In general increased salt addition tends to increase the dosage required to achieve these optima. Both these observations result from the change in polymer extension and accord well with the bridging theory of flocculation.The dose required for optimal cake moisture is up to three times greater than that required for optimal filtration rate. This effect is reasonably consistent for all polymers studied and appears to be non-linearly dependent on salt concentration, with the difference being small at 0 and 3 per cent but quite significant at 1 per cent.

"The Jameson Cell is a type of flotation machine in which air and pulp are brought together in a vertical tube called a downcomer. Within the downcomer the air and pulp are dispersed into a dense foam of fine bubbles, which creates a favourable environment for bubble-particle collision and subsequent collection of hydrophobic particles. The intense collection zone within the downcomer can be considered similar to the zone between the rotor and stator in mechanical flotation cells.Research into the bubble-particle collision and fluid dynamics of mechanical cells rotor-stator zone has been limited by the difficulty of achieving accurate measurements in production sized machines. With the Jameson Cell the downcomer is largely external and separated from the flotation tank, allowing ready access to the primary contacting zone for measurement and analysis.An investigation has been undertaken into the operating characteristics of the downcomer relating to bubble-particle collision. An effective mapping of the downcomer has been made through measurements of void fraction and bubble size taken across cross sections of the downcomer. Analysis of these measurements has provided an interpretation of the variations in the air and fluid dynamics, bubble size and distribution throughout the downcomer chamber.Existing models of bubble-particle collision efficiency are reviewed in respect to the collected information and refinements conducted. The area of maximum bubble-particle collision efficiency is defined. Findings are related to operation within the rotor-stator zone of mechanical flotation cells."

Large scale equipment can reduce both capital and operating costs for concentrators. Large semiautogenous mills can be effectively utilized in big mills but they must be kept fully loaded to take advantage of their great potential. With varying hardness ores, controlling throughput is difficult and careful design must take this into consideration. A variable speed drive on large primary semi- autogenous mills can overcome this problem to a considerable degree. This paper provides a base case using standard accepted technology of two wound rotor single speed 4,476 kW (6,000 hp) motors to drive the primary SAG mills of a hypothetical 36,364 mtpd (40,000 stpd) typical porphyry copper mill. One other fixed speed drive will be described and five variable speed drive configurations will be reviewed. Capital costs for the entire grinding circuit, from crusher product to flotation feed, were developed for the base case and each of the alternatives. A technical evaluation comparing the advantages and disadvantages of each drive is presented.
