The Bureau of Mines is collecting and analyzing representative samples of crude petroleum from all the producing fields in the United States , and the results are being published in a series of reports that are preliminary to the issue of a bulletin covering the entire survey . The bureau has recently completed a survey of crude oils from the Kansas district . In all 27 samples were collected and analyzed , under the direction of A. W. Ambrose , chief petroleum technologist of the Bureau. Valuable assistance was received through the cooperation of oil companies operating in the State , especially the Prairie Pipe Line Co. , and the Empire Pipe Line Co. The present report issued as Serial 2322 , on the Kansas crudes , forms the fifth of the series . Of the four previous papers , the first ( No. 2202 ) deals with crudes from the Eastern fields of the United States , the second ( No. 2235 ) with crudes from the Rocky Mountain district , the third ( No. 2290) gives additional data , cn viscosities and pour tests , for the crudes from these two fields , and the fourth ( No. 2293 ) covers the fields of northern Texas , northern Louisiana , and Arkansas . The details of the methods of collecting samples , making laboratory tests and interpreting results , have been discussed in these earlier reports . It has also been pointed out that the only adequate method of interpreting analyses of crude oils is to compare the individual reports with the analysis of some crude oil that is familiar to the operator . For this reason , no comprehensive discussion of the results of the Kansas survey is attempted, although some general statements may be made .

In July 1985, as the U.S. copper industry contracted and the Mexican industry expanded, a trans border pollution agreement was signed which included smelter air pollution control in the "Gray Triangle": Cananea, Nacozari and Douglas. Since then the Douglas smelter has been closed, a year earlier than initially required; though its new smelter is operating, S02 collection and acid disposal at Nacozari is yet to come; and the Cananea smelter has been un-touched. Nacozari and Cananea copper mining have expanded while a reduced U.S. copper industry has rationalized to a point of fragile profitability. As a paradigm of U.S. copper competitiveness, this paper attempts to explain the differential fortunes of copper in the two countries, to project the future of the smelter agreement as a function of acid disposal, and to consider the consequences of the politicized application of smelter pollution control in Arizona.

Wear, fatigue and corrosion are the most widely encountered modes of failure in materials used in engineering applications, including aero-gas turbines. Although wear is distinctly classified as adhesive, abrasive, erosive, fretting and so on, there are usually more than one wear mechanism involved in the failure of components in service because there are many systems and materials variables active in materials wear that makes it more difficult to study. This is further complicated by the discrepancies between the results of laboratory tests and field data. The present investigation was set up to examine the wear characteristics of M50 and T1 high-speed steels at both room and elevated temperatures to draw a thorough understanding of the wear behavior of this class of high-speed steels. This article focuses on the mechanical and microstructural characterization of wear for T1 and M50 high-speed steels using a pin-on-disk wear machine.

"The technical knowledge and practical experience accumulated by industry and others in abating acid mine drainage (AMD) is being proactively applied at every phase of the mine life cycle. This paper traces the mine life cycle from exploration to post closure monitoring and maintenance, and reviews AMD abatement measures that have become an integral component of exploration and mining activities.Attention is increasingly being given to evaluating AMD potential as part of exploration work, and studies related to project feasibility and design. Mining, mineral processing, and waste management options are selected taking into consideration their suitability to inhibit AMD. These inhibition measures are typically committed to in closure plans submit-ted at the permitting stage. Mines are operated and decommissioned, often progressively, as planned and in accordance with environ-mental protection policies."

The implementation of new technology to mineral separation operations requires rigorous testing to confirm the technology&apos;s technical and economic benefit. The Jaguar Mine owned by Jabiru Metals is located in Western Australia and sequentially separates a copper concentrate and then a zinc concentrate. Fine grinding (80% of zinc in tail is <25µm) is required to achieve efficient mineral separation. All mineral losses are therefore fine mineral losses, and so improvements in metal recovery must focus on this fine mineral. Magnetic aggregation technology has been shown to increase the recovery of fine paramagnetic minerals so it was an appropriate technology to evaluate at Jaguar. Testwork commenced in the copper circuit and it was found that there was a substantial reduction in copper in copper tail and an increase in zinc recovery to the zinc concentrate. The increase in zinc recovery in the latter zinc circuit was an interesting result and initiated the second stage of testwork that was to install and test a second magnetic conditioning unit in the zinc círcuit. This showed a further increase in zinc recovery. Magnetic conditioning technology has now been fully evaluated in the plant and is now part of the Jaguar flowsheet.

The magnetometer which was developed during the war for detecting submarines has proven exceedingly valuable in outlining deep-seated structures in oil exploration, and will be useful also to geologists in outlining regional structural features in the Precambrian. Our magnetometer has been developed to outline local and detail structures. 1 am quite sure that all geophysicists and geologists would agree with me that, in ore prospecting, it is important to obtain as much detailed information as possible. We know that, as we ascend from the ground and get away from the magnetic ore-bearing structures and orebodies, the magnetic intensity decreases rapidly, but, worse than that, we lose the details even faster. Figure l shows two strong, very sharp, magnetic &apos;highs&apos; over two orebodies which, as our distance increases, rapidly merge into one fairly broad, moderately strong anomaly. If we drilled on this maximum, we would not encounter any of the orebodies. Therefore, we should fly the airborne magnetometer as close to the ground as possible in order to duplicate the results of the magnetic ground surveys. The first chance to accomplish this came with the helicopter, which is an exceedingly maneuverable aircraft. It can be landed in a cleared space not much more than fifty feet square. With floats, it can be landed anywhere, even in a swamp, on thin ice, or on soft snow. It can stand still in the air, hovering over a given point. It can ascend and descend vertically, fly sideways and even backwards, at the will of the pilot. It flies forward at any speed up to l00 miles an hour. The helicopter can be taken to any desired position at a given time. It can fly at any useful altitude from a few feet to several thousand feet above the ground. It can fly very close to the ground with safety. In bare areas, the survey flight may be performed a few feet above the ground. In forested areas, however, the flights, to clear the trees, must be made at l00 to 150 feet. To mark out a certain point, a small parachute-like marker may be draped over a tree or laid on the ground. This can be done from the helicopter without touching the ground.

The activity of Sb,03 in PbO-Sb,03 slags containing less than 50 mol pct Sb,03 was determined by the inert-gas saturation method at 700°C. In this composition range, the activity gf SbzO3 shows a strong negative deviation from ideality. The activity of PbO in these slags was calculated by application of the Gibbs-Duhem iniegration to the Sb203 activity data. The calculated activity of PbO in slags containing more than 63 mol pct PbO was found to deviate in a positive direction from ideality uthile a negative deviation was found for slags containing less PbO. The standard Gibbs free energies of formation of Sb,03 and PbO. Sb203 have been calculated and compared with existing data in the literature. The activity of Sb203 in PbO-Si0,-Sb203 (PbO/SiO, = 2) slags containing less than 25 mol pct Sb,03 was also determined by the inert-gas saturation method at 700°C. In this composition range, the activity of Sbz03 shows a very large negative deviation from ideality. VERY little experimental work has been published in the past to determine equilibrium data in the oxide systems connected with the refining of lead. These data are of value since impurities such as antimony, arsenic, and tin must be removed from lead and recovered for further treatment. Equilibrium studies on antimony and arsenic systems are also of interest for the design of new processes for lead refining and lead dross treatment. Maier and ~incke&apos; first determined the liquidus curves for the PbO-Sb203 system and identified the compound PbO . Sb203. They found the phase diagram for this system to be two simple eutectics located on either side of the congruent melting compound. They also determined a very limited amount of vapor pressure data for Sb406 abbve PbO-Sba3 melts at 697"~. A second phase diagram investigation on this system was reported by Hennig and Kohlmeyer&apos; who confirmed the existence of the compound PbO . Sb203 as well as the form of the diagram. A disagreement was noticed, however, in that their liquidus temperatures over nearly the entire composition range were higher than those reported by Maier and Hincke. Barthel~ and pelze14 redetermined the liquidus curve at the PbO-rich end of the PbO-Sb@, system and agreed very closely with the results of Maier and Hincke. None of the investigators mentioned above reported any mutual solid solubility in the PbO-SbD3 system. Zunkel and Larson5 have determined the phase diagram for the PbO-rich end of the PbO-Sb203 system by slag-metal equilibrium studies in the Pb-PbO-Sb203 system and by thermal analysis studies in the PbO-Sbz03 system. A maximum solid solubility of 5.6 mol pct Sb203 in PbO was observed at the eutectic temperature of 604°C. Their results for the phase diagram agree favorably with those of Maier and Hincke. The vapor pressure of Sb2O3 in the temperature range from 470" to 800°C has been determined by Hincke, using a modification of the transportation meth~d.~ His results for temperatures below the melting point of Sba3 are the only data reported in the published literature. The predominant vapor species has been shown to be Sb,06 by Norman and staley.? Myzenkov and Klushin,8 using the boiling-point method, have determined the pressure of Sb406 above liquid SbD3 in the temperature range from 715" to 1025°C. The agreement between these two studies is not very close. A portion of the discrepancy lies in the fact that Hincke used silica crucibles, which were attacked by the liquid Sbz03 at high temperatures. This fact does not account, however. for the large difference observed at the melting point. ~aier&apos; gives a brief summary of vapor pressure data for Sb,O, above pure liquid Sbz03 which agree quite well with the data of Myzenkov and Klushin at temperatures near the melting point. This paper describes the determination of Sb2O3 activity data in the PbO-Sb203 and Pb0-Si02-Sb203 (PbO/SiOz = 2) systems by the inert-gas saturation method. These activity data are compared with the data calculated by Zunkel and arson. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. The materials used in this investigation were analytical reagent-grade PbO (99.8 pct PbO, 0.14 pct insoluble in CHsCOOH, 0.02 pct not precipitated by HB, 0.1 pct CaO, and 0.08 pct SiOz), Sbf13 (99.6 pct Sb203, 0.004 PC~ C1-, 0.005 PC~ SO;-, 0.15 p~t AS, 0.001 pct Fe, and 0.03 pct other heavy metals such as Pb), and SiOz (chromatographic grade). Apparatus for Vapor Pressure Determinations. The apparatus used in this investigation consisted of a transportation reaction system with two separate gas trains. The argon transporting gas was first mixed with a small amount of hydrogen, metered, and dried by passage through silica gel and anhydrone drying tubes arranged in series. After this preliminary drying, the argon was passed through copper wool at 500°C to convert the residual oxygen to water vapor which was removed by three anhydrone drying tubes. The solidification of poly crystalline zone-refined lead has been examined. A novel casting technique was used, with several advantages such as unidirectional heat flow, atmosphere control, and decanting of the liquid during any stage of growth. The experimental results show the separate existence of two textures, a (111) surface texture at the chill surface and a texture in the columnar zone, in the absence of conditions which would produce dendritic growth. WALTON and chalmers have most recently shown that the dendrite direction is the preferred axial orientation for the solidification of many metals in casting. Experimentally, for aluminum and lead, they showed that in the columnar zone the dendrite direction, <l00>, predominated, developing from an equiaxed chill cast layer that exhibited no preferred orientation. A reasonable description of the way in which grains closer to the dendrite orientation were able to encompass other grains was then set forth. For their materials, it was also shown that high superheats could inhibit a preferred axial orientation from developing, presumably by inhibiting dendrite growth. The observations of Rosenberg and iller, on the other hand, showed that zone-refined lead, cast under conditions similar to those of Walton and halmers,&apos; had a definite <111> texture in the columnar zone. However, no examination was made of the chill surface to find out if the columnar zone texture was independent of the orientations at the surface. Since the existence of preferred growth in Upure" lead is thus in doubt, a reexamination of the casting of zone-refined lead is presented here, using a novel casting technique. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES AND RESULTS Zone-refined lead was prepared from two starting materials;99.999+pct supplied by ASARCO, and 99.999pct supplied by COMINCO. Renewed interest in the underground gasification of coal evolves from comprehensive studies of earth fracture systems that indicate that the movement of fluids can be controlled in the coalbed. In particular, directional property studies of natural microfissure occurrence, permeability, ultrasonic velocity, tensile strength, and orientation of intervals of inherent rock weakness, together with geologic structure setting and fracture trace analysis, can predict the gaseous flow paths in the coalbed. Having this information, the dominant direction in which gases generated and/or liberated by heat would move can be determined so that appropriate well patterns can be developed. Together with advances made in drilling technology that permit long horizontal holes to be drilled through the coal seams, tests can be conducted to determine whether directional control will permit devolatilization of the coalbed and gasification of the remaining hot coke in a systematic manner to produce a low-Btu gas suited for the generation of electricity.

"INTRODUCTION Peat is the accumulated mass of plant materials that remain after partial decay under specific conditions. In the swampy peat bogs dead material which falls on the surface immediately is attacked by fungi and aercbic bacteria. Decay under these conditions is rapid, but of relatively short duration, since the constant addition of new material soon forces the older layers below the water level, in this position, without access to oxygen, the plant constituents are attacked mainly by anaerobic bacteria, and decomposition proceeds slowly. The largest part of peat is contributed by the woody tissues of plants, the chief constituents of which are cellulose and lignin, together with a small proportion of hemicelluloses. During the normal process of biological decay celluloses disappear more rapidly than lignin. The result is a complex substance known as humin, from which the humic acids may be extracted.In 1826, Sprengel 5 found that when decayed plant materials were extracted with alinnli and the resulting black liquid acidified with mineral acid a brown gelatinous precipitate was formed. To this product, which was a brown amorphous powder when dry, he gave the name ""humic acid'. Since that time, chemists have used the name rather loosely to designate products which have been isolated by very diverse means from soils, decayed woods, peat, lignite, and coal. An excellent review of the early work on humic acids was published by Baumann 6 in 1909. This publication aroused the interest of Oden, who then investigated the humic acids. An account of Oden’s work, as a good survey of the literature, is contained in his monograph “Die Huminsauren”. 7"

Operating uranium mill tailings containment and mill decommissioning activities are regulated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) through numerous regulatory mechanisms. Reduction of radon emissions from tailings disposal areas, remedial actions to return groundwater to baseline constituent concentrations, and 200-to 1,000-year stabilization of tailings are major focus areas of regulation. The cumulative economic impact and uncertainty associated with regulation are very significant and will hinder future development of uranium milling facilities.

The rare earths market is relatively small and slow growing. Three applications using mainly cerics rare earths : catalysts, glass-ceramics and metallurgy are volume market. Inside this slow moving frame, fast growing niches can be found lamp phosphors, permanent magnets, fine cera- mics... There is no specific ore for one given element, and the natural occurence of any ele- ment is almost constant in both monazite and basnaesite. This creates the "balance problem" that consists in the best compromise between shortage and over production. The general trend of prices is downward in constant money. Despite this difficult environment (price decrease, technology changes, etc...) lots of company have always been attrac- ted by the rare earth business.

TO operate the bituminous coal industry in the United States in 1929 cost $770,237,000, of which $30,739,000 was paid for purchased power and $34,947,000 for new machinery and equipment. Equipment aggregated 3,124,000 hp. A mining industry that spends $65,000,000 a year for power and machinery is likely to be fairly well mechanized, and when the machinery in use takes three million horsepower to drive it, the probabilities are that mechanization has been in progress in at least some of the mines for quite a few years. Mechanization in its broadest sense implies machine cutting, power drilling, mechanical loading, electric haulage, mechanical sizing and cleaning, and lesser applications of machinery to mining operations. But the introduction and development of mechanical loading has been the feature of coal mining recently and its extraordinary progress is causing great changes within the industry. A novel approach to eliminating environmental and public safety hazards that are associated with fires in abandoned coal mines and waste banks involves the use of in situ combustion technology developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines to accelerate the burning of the wasted coals in place. This technology would be used under exhaust ventilation control conditions that would allow for total management of the hot gases produced. Combustion stoichiometries would be optimized to minimize unburnt combustibles and to maximize the heat content of the gas products, which will be exhausted at one or more fan locations. When necessary, scrubber systems would be employed to remove air pollutants, such as sulfur dioxide; heat utilization systems (process heat, steam, and electricity) would also be employed to offset operational costs. Ultimately, complete burnout would solve the fire and acid water formation problems of the abandoned coal mine or waste bank. Pertinent technical data for burnout control are derived and discussed in terms of the important material and operational parameters. In general, it is believed feasible to operate a burnout system in an existing abandoned mine or waste bank fire at thermal power levels in the range of 10 to 100 Mw, and at exhaust gas temperatures of 1,000° C (1,830° F).

The fundamental characteristics of ultrafine chalcopyrite flotation were investigated by the Bureau of Mines to establish techniques to improve recovery of ultrafine chalcopyrite. Intense agitation during conditioning was found to improve flotation recovery of the ultrafine chalcopyrite. A split-circuit flotation design, treating the plus 38-µm-size ore by the conventional method and treating the minus 38-µm-size ore with intense agitation conditioning followed by flotation, recovered 95.6 pct of the copper in a 28.3-pct-copper concentrate, This was a 5-pct increase in copper recovery over the conventional chalcopyrite flotation method.

"Air overpressure monitoring procedures and instrumentation guidelines which apply to production blasting in underground limestone mining are not readily available. The industry also lacks an applicable source for air overpressure levels that are produced by blasting operations in underground limestone mines. As such, there was no available background data from which the expected overpressure levels from production blasting in a new underground limestone mine could be predicted. During the development phase of the mine, it was imperative that newly constructed underground structures be capable of withstanding the overpressure produced by blasting in nearby production headings. To ensure the structures could withstand the blast-induced overpressure, a study was conducted to record empirical overpressure data and develop a model which could be used to control air overpressure levels by the production crews. This document describes the procedures used to develop the model, the development of the model, and the applicability of the model for predicting underground blast overpressures. INTRODUCTION A developing underground limestone mining operation required that a ventilation wall be built to house the permanent mine fans. At the time of the study, the mine was a single-level room and pillar operation with a 7.9 meter (26 ft) high roof, 13.7 meter (45 ft) wide entries, and 13.7 meter by 13.7 meter (45 ft by 45 ft) pillar dimensions. The mine is accessed via a 396 meter (1300 ft) long decline and 100 meter (330 ft) deep ventilation shaft. The ventilation wall was to be partially constructed of autoclaved aerated concrete blocks, for which dynamic strength data from explosives loading were unavailable. The company ownership feared that airblast may affect the wall due to the close proximity of the working faces. Therefore, the company management asked that the overpressure levels be estimated and compared with the designed wall strength. Few studies that apply to explosively-driven air overpressure levels in underground production blasting were found through a literature review. Therefore, the logical approach to assess the overpressure levels was to monitor the blast pressures at the site and conduct a thorough evaluation of the data. As a result of this study, the equipment setup and monitoring procedure used to record the airblast data is described. Finally, the experimental data gathered during the monitoring program is presented, trends and findings from the data are discussed, and recommendations for further study are presented."

Since we first agreed to present this talk we have learned that some of you may have been covering ground we intend to discuss: Bob Schechter, Daryl Tweeton, Don Seidel, Herb Burgman; however, the ideas were original when we began, "novel" as in the title of the talk, and whether our results are news or merely corroborative, we feel they point a direction that could be valuable to all. We worked with many of you in the past on using hydrogen peroxide in in-situ uranium leaching. Our talk today is not directly related to peroxide; it is, I hope, illustrative of Du Pont&apos;s interest in providing service to this industry in any way we can. The scouting work we are presenting was stimulated by field inputs: First, ammonium carbonate leaches cause restoration problems, primarily because ammonium ions exchange on clays with calcium. Second, sodium carbonate solutions, especially in South Texas deposits, can cause intolerable swelling of clays. From discussions with Dr. van Olphen, who wrote the book on clay chemistry, we inferred by comparison of the radii of the hydrated ions of the elements in these clay systems, that since potassium had about the same radius as ammonium, and sodium was much larger, potassium occupied a unique position to solve both problems. We have shown: FIGURE 1 Potassium bicarbonate systems leach uranium without loss of permeability found with sodium Potassium salts are very effective in restoring ammonia-leached sites Before reviewing the details of our work, which was performed by Hazen Research, Inc., I should like to stress its scouting nature. We are trying to assist the in-situ industry by pointing out new, potentially important directions. But, as with our previous work on sodium silicate to restore permeability, we feel the development phases can generally best be carried out in cooperative programs with companies directly involved with operations. DISCUSSION Test Parameters Now for the details: Our leaching tests were designed to note pressure-drop changes across the ore sample as the uranium was leached. Figure 2 shows the apparatus. The [ ] packed length was 20.5 inches (52 cm) with fifteen hundred grams of ore in the two-inch (5 cm)-diameter bed. Pressure drop was measured by manometer and feed rates were maintained constant with a tubing pump. The samples, from a South Texas leach site, were sealed in "Zip Loc" bags, frozen with "dry ice", crushed (still frozen) through six mesh, and blended before placement into the columns.
