The Knelson Continuous Variable Discharge (CVD) is a continuous centrifugal gravity concentrator for high-mass yield recovery applications. It has four operating variables that enable control of mass yield, product grade and recovery namely: fluidisation water, bowl speed, pinch valve open time and pinch valve closed time. Plant testing of a pilot scale Knelson CVD6 was conducted to evaluate the effects of operating variables on mineral separation. The analysis of operating variable effects has provided a framework for the development of operating guidelines for the CVD.

The Calico area lies within the Walker Lane fault zone, six miles north of Schurz, Nevada. The mineralized area is overlain by a thick section of Tertiary tuffs and ash-flows, that have been intruded by a series of andesite plug, dikes, and sills. The pre-Tertiary rocks outcrops only in two areas at one to two miles distance from the drilling areas. Underlying the volcanics are sediments ranging from siltstones, sandstone, calcareous shales, to carbonates of the Luning sequence. These have been intruded by one or more phaneritic intrusives ranging in composition from quartz diorite to quartz monzonite, with the development of a skarn zone on the south flank that contains extensive mineralization consisting of magnetite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and chalcopytite, with traces of sphalerite, galena, and molybdenite. The magnetite, pyrrhotite, and part of the pyrite appears to be contemporaneous with the skarn, while, part of the chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, molybdenite, quartz, and calcite, occurs as minute veinlets cutting the other minerals. This later mineralization may be associated with a late stage of the same sequence, or possibly associated with another intrusive to the southwest. Geophysical work has consisted of aerial magnetics, ground magnetics, gravity, seismic, and induced polarization surveys. Preliminary induced polarization surveys indicated anomalies at depth, both over the magnetic anomaly and to the northwest. Subsequent IP work confirmed this earlier anomaly, and drilling disclosed extensive mineralization at depths of 400 feet on the northwest end and over 1,000 feet to the southeast.

For some years the Du Pont Company has utilized computer calculations to study the various theoretical properties of explosives. These studies have yielded valuable information on the effects of density changes or formulation changes on detonation rate, detonation pressure, explosion pressure, heat of explosion and numerous other properties, and have aided in evaluating the theoretical potential of explosives. In addition, a multitude of laboratory tests have been utilized for the evaluation of explosives. When comparing the computer data and the voluminous test data it became evident that numerous anomalies existed. Tests in rock were required to study explosives under borehole confinement. This fact was further emphasized after numerous field measurements showed that the borehole velocity of commercial explosives did not match the theoretical value but was dependent on conditions of field use. Since we are interested in the practical aspects of blasting, a program was initiated to evaluate explosives as used in commercial blasting. INSTRUMENTATION Most of you are familiar with the extensive work that has been done by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in their studies of strain measurements in rock. Early in our work we adopted procedures similar to those used by the Bureau of Mines. Strain pulses were measured by gages cemented in boreholes. Since we were primarily interested in the effect of explosives in the zone where fracture might occur, this system offered several disadvantages for Du Pont: 1. Cemented gages were expensive and not reusable. 2. When gage holes were used for several shots, there was considerable question as to the condition of the rock after the first shot.

Flotation froth machine vision systems provide consistent real-time measurements pertaining to the state of the flotation cell being monitored. Typical measurements include froth velocity, froth colour, froth texture and froth stability. This paper presents the results from test work conducted on the molybdenite rougher circuit at the Kennecott Utah Copper Concentrator during February 2006. Machine vision results show that it is not possible to accurately determine bubble size distribution information for the molybdenite froth, despite using state-of-the-art methods. Instead, it is necessary to make use of texture measurements to classify the various different froth states. Numerous combinations of texture measurements and classifiers are used to determine the best combination. Results show that the Fourier ring based texture measurements perform the best when both K nearest neighbour and Gaussian mixture model classifiers are used. The concentrate grade of the flotation cell is modelled using combinations of froth velocity and froth texture descriptors. The results show that by using a linear combination of these descriptors rather than either one by itself it is possible to account for a much larger percentage of the variation observed in the concentrate grade data. Adjusted R2 values of 92% and 84% are achieved when modelling the copper and the molybdenite concentrate grade respectively.

In a recent publication (Bueno and Lane, 2011) the authors presented the analysis of a consolidated dataset composed by 137 autogenous/semi-autogenous grinding (AG/SAG) mill pilot trials. By comparing the measured data against theoretical specific energy consumption, the analysis indicated which circuit configurations were more or less energy efficient. However, the analysis has also indicated that the energy efficiency of each of the types of circuits vary significantly.There are numerous factors that contribute to the variations of energy efficiency of AG/SAG mill-based circuits, such as feed size distribution, recycle ratios and ore characteristics. In view of this, the present work accesses these factors individually and discusses what may lead a particular circuit configuration to be more or less efficient in terms of energy and costs.CITATION:Bueno, M and Lane, G, 2012. Alcoa operates two bauxite mines at Huntly and Willowdale, located within the jarrah forest south-east of Perth in Western Australia. Ore reserves are shallow but extensive, and mining pits averaging around 20 ha in size are distributed across a mining region in a mosaic pattern, linked to a centrally-located crusher by a radiating network of haulroads. A mining or crusher region is defined partly in terms of economic haul distances, and new regions are opened once the current regions’ reserves have been mined. Since commencing in 1973, the Huntly mine has constructed and progressively closed three previous mining regions and is presently in a transition from the fourth and current region of McCoy to the new region of Myara. At present rates of production, approximately 450 ha is cleared, mined and rehabilitated each year.The value of topsoil in returning a diverse mix of native jarrah forest plant species and supplying nutrients, organic matter and soil biota to rehabilitated areas has long been recognised. Managing the topsoil resource is therefore a critical element in the success of rehabilitation outcomes, but the distribution and dynamic nature of mining operations pose significant planning and logistical challenges. The regionalised approach to mining at Huntly also presents a range of issues for what are, in effect, soil management plans for episodic mine closure. The nature of mining and rehabilitation operations are described, together with the planning processes that Alcoa follows to quantify, track and report on soil movement. A case study of the Huntly mine demonstrates that an integrated operational and life-of-mine planning process is essential for successful and cost-effective mine rehabilitation.CITATION:Hackett, L and Grigg, A, 2014. The ore-hearth was the earliest type of furnace used in smelting Mississippi Valley lead-ores, which are very pure, and low in silver-content. The first smelters made no attempts to recover lead from the smoke; and since about 15 per cent. of the lead in the charge escaped in this manner, early practice with the hearth was decidedly wasteful. At most of the large smelting-plants blast-furnaces with auxiliary roasters were substituted for the hearths long ago. But, upon the introduction of the Lewis and Bartlett bag-process for collecting fume, the ore-hearth was used by companies engaged in the manufacture of pigments, simply on account of the large percentage of fume made by it. In fact, the extraction of lead mas kept down by the use of hot blast and other devices. During recent years, however, several smelting companies have realized that the preliminary roasting of galena for the blast-furnace is not economical, and have, therefore, replaced the roasting-furnace with a modification of the old Scotch hearth, in which a large percentage of the lead in a charge is

During longwall mining, the ability to reliably estimate the height of longwall mining-induced fractures is critically important in order to effectively manage mining-induced water inflows and aquifer interference. The extent of mining-induced subsurface deformation, fracture, surface subsidence and aquifer interference is largely controlled by local lithological conditions, mining methods and mine layouts. Therefore for the purpose of quantifying mining impacts it is imperative to incorporate the local geology and mine plan parameters in a mine scale model. Two different numerical models based on 3D continuum (Finite Element Method) and 2D discrete (Discrete element method) domains, respectively, are developed to incorporate the mine site parameters of a study site in Australia. Both the models are calibrated and validated with measured mine data. The continuum numerical modelling method is used to investigate the change in permeability of the overburden strata due to underground extraction considering the full 3D nature of geology and mine layout. The discrete element modelling method is used to simulate the initiation and propagation of fractures, allowing the caving of overburden strata to be represented in a realistic manner, and the permeability enhancement of the strata overlying the goaf to be calculated from first principles. Permeability enhancement in the discrete element model is a direct function of the fractures induced in the deformation/caving process; fracture location, extent, aperture and connectedness. From the numerical modelling under the simulated condition for the mine studied here, it is predicted that the permeability of the caving zone from the goaf to five times the mining height increases by almost six orders of magnitude. In the fracture zone to approximately ten times the mining height, the change in permeability is predicted to be around two to three orders of magnitude. At the height of more than ten times the mining height the magnitude of permeability increased is predicted to be one to two orders of magnitude. The most critical variable in the successful establishment of the Murrin Murrin Heap Leach plant was the effective agglomeration of the Ni laterite ore. This paper describes the test work undertaken to establish the key agglomeration parameters including state of the art testing and analysis procedures. These parameters were then utilised to establish the key design and operational concepts for the world’s first commercial scale Ni laterite heap leach. Following the technical and economic success of the operation, the actual operational data is compared back to the original test work data.

The Beta Hunt orebody is situated on the south western limb of the Kambalda dome. It is one of the nickel occurrences in the area which fall into the category of æKambalda Style OrebodiesÆ. These orebodies are renowned as being continuous uniformly mineralised ribbons of nickel sulfide mineralisation. Interestingly, Beta Hunt does not conform to this notion of continuity and uniformity and is in fact highly irregular in its ore distribution due largely to the influence of post depositional structure. In an attempt to understand the ore distribution at delineation stage rather than development stage a detailed footwall topography model is created using all available drilling data. To augment this drilling data, the routine use of downhole EM and borehole radar has been introduced to provide data beyond the confines of the drill core to enhance the geological interpretation of the footwall topography and the distribution of the mineralisation. The implementation of a detailed footwall model and the use of downhole geophysics has proved to be very effective in resolving the orebody complexity issues. Ongoing development of the methods used will continue to refine the interpretation of the geology to enable more efficient extraction of the orebody.

To study the fracture evolution of overlying strata for ascending mining in a short-distance coal seam group, a two-dimensional physical simulation model was designed based on a specific geological condition. The fracture development zone was divided into the compaction zone and active zone by monitoring and analyzing the macro fracture evolution of the surrounding rock mass during the excavation of multiple coal seams. The secondary fracture development process of the overlying strata was demonstrated with a physical model. The quantity, length, and inclination of the fracture were calculated with MATLAB software, and the results were verified by geological radar. The total number of fractures between two coal seams increased with a “parabola” shape during the excavation of the lower coal seam, the crack angle was mainly vertical and horizontal, and the number of horizontal cracks first increased and subsequently decreased; the excavation of the upper coal seam caused the secondary fracture development process of the overlying strata, and the relief range and its extent increased. The mining-induced cracks from the lower and upper coal seams connected with each other, especially the permanent vertical fracture in the cutting room side and face side. Finally, the three-dimensional gas fissure was formed.

"INTRODUCTION The operation of internal-combustion engines at high altitudes and the general aspects of combustion processes in rarefied atmospheres have created considerable interest in the problem of ignition and flame propagation at low pressures. Nuckolls, Matson, and Dufour 4/ have published results on the effect of low pressures on the propagation of flame in gasoline vapor-air mixtures in vessels of large capacity. The volumes of their test equipment varied in capacity from 0.425 to 125 cubic feet. Various sources of ignition were employed. These authors found that the explosive range of gasoline vapor in air decreases with decreasing pressure at pressures considerably below atmospheric, until a limiting absolute pressure of about 33 mm. mercury at ordinary temperature is reached, at which point no appreciable flame is propagated.Experiments carried out at the Bureau with natural gas-air mixtures at reduced pressures have shown 5/ that the limits of inflammability are but little affected at reduced pressures down to 175 mm. mercury. As the pressures of natural gas-air mixtures are reduced below atmospheric, the mixtures become more difficult to ignite; however, if a suitable source of ignition is employed, the limits of inflammability are as wide at 175 mm. mercury absolute pressure as they are at atmospheric pressure. In view of these observations with natural gas-air mixtures, it appears important to investigate gasoline vapor-air mixtures for possible similar behavior. For this reason the tests herein described were carried-out."

"IntroductionHydraulics has been considered a science for thousands of years. Applications included water wheels, dam; and slice gates but today the term ""hydraulics"" commonly refers to ""power hydraulics"" in which fluid is used under controlled pressure to do work. The mining industry employee’s hydraulics in practically every aspect of its operations, on such equipment as trucks, front end loaders, LHD units, crushers and hydrostroke feeders. The many benefits of hydraulic drives such as ease of variable speed control, high power: weight ratio low envelope size of hydraulic actuators and ease of maintenance have been extensively developed in the pulp and paper, chemical, steel, and other basic industries, but until quite recently, concentrator operators have not taken advantage of the versatile methods of power transmission offered by hydraulic systems.After some preliminary testing at the Lynn Lake concentrator Sherritt Cordon Mines Limited installed several hydraulic system; at their Fox Mine concentrator to drive slurry pumps and conveyors. The systems used at Fox and the systems which will be installed at the Ruttan concentrator are briefly described in this paper. Since acceptance is based mainly on understanding a few basic principles of hydraulics system; including pumps, motors, circuitry and central methods are also presented in the paper.PRINCIPLES OF POWER HYDRAULICSBasicsHydraulic systems provide an uncomplicated, versatile means of power transmission. Small manganese ore bodies in south Odisha, India occurs both as stratiform and stratabound ore bodies. These two ore bodies show contrasting mineralogical, petrographical and chemical characteristics. Stratiform type of Mn-ores consists of manganese, iron and silicate- phases in approximately same proportion. In contrast, stratabound ore bodies contain a high proportion of manganese oxides, silicates and phosphorus phases. Phosphorus is found within apatite in the stratabound ore bodies while in the stratiform ore it occurs as an adsorbed state with iron phase (goethite). Both ore bodies are low-grade (17-23% Mn) therefore do not have a market value. However, the stratabound ores are enriched in phosphorus (P2O5: >1%) compared to the stratiform ores. Both the ore types were processed through gravity, magnetic and roast reduction followed by magnetic separation techniques. The strata bound ore could be upgraded to 33% Mn from a feed of 23% by combination of dry and wet magnetic separation methods. But the phosphorus content also suits up (P2O5: 1.2%) in the processed product making it unsuitable for further use. The stratiform ores do not respond to either gravity or magnetic separation because of close association of manganese with iron phases. However, this could be beneficiated through roast reduction followed by magnetic separation. An ore with 17% Mn content could be upgraded to 40% Mn with a 42% yield and 78% recovery. The goethite, having phosphorus, converts to magnetite and is retained within the magnetic fraction, thereby reducing the concentration of phosphorus in the non-magnetic fraction, which becomes the product. This report demonstrates the influence of ore petrology in determining the up-gradational potential of manganese ore in the southern Odisha, India. In a previous report,6 results were given that showed the amount of natural ventilation in a manhole having a capacity of 74.l cubic feet when the number of ventilation openings in the cover was varied. from no openings to a maximum of 48. The results showed that the ventilation (air changes per day) in the manhole was proportional to the area of the openings in the cover, and also that the number or area of the openings was the factor that chiefly affected the ventilation.

The North-West Russia for 70 years is one the main producers of Cu, Ni, Co, Al, P, REE, Zr, Ti, Ta, Nb, Fe ores and other minerals in the Europe. The largest mining companies locates in the Murmansk region, and they extracts about 100 mln. tons of ores and damps up to 250 mln. tons of waste annually. Nevertheless an environmental situation in the region is stable due to rational management and treatment of wastes on a base of the Noosphere Concept for Nature-using suggested by Vladimir Vernadsky. The Concept was performed practically in the Fersman’ scheme of “non-waste mining and metallurgical complex”, published in the monograph “Minerals of the Kola Peninsula: current status – analyses – prognoses” (1941) and served till now as a sort of “Bible” for industry managers lightening a strategy for an industrial “trophic chain”. The recent status of this scheme is shown on the picture below, and one can see that our concept is coincide with modern ideology known as the “Industrial Ecology”. Moving along this mainstream in the Kola Peninsula since 1929, when the first mining company “Apatit” was established, we provided the water close circuit in mineral dressing plants, hydrometallurgical treatment of slag and tailings, productions of building materials and adsorbents of wastes. The innovation set of technologies designed by the Kola Science Centre allow recently to involve tailing damps in re-exploitation as the technogenic deposits of valuable raw materials for fertilizers, tanning and cleaning agents, pigments, concretes and etc.

The Walnut Creek Mine was developed in 1989 to supply lignite to the Texas-New Mexico Power TNP-ONE power plant. Being new, we had the opportunity to start from scratch and rethink many of the traditional methods of managing a mine operation. We had the opportunity to create a team environment, encouraging people to get involved and make decisions. The founding philosophy of the mine, "A Quality Product by Quality People", acknowledged that the key to a productive, quality operation was the people. This paper will explore methods employed by Walnut Creek in selection of team members, building the team and the relative success of these methods.

INTRODUCTION. NOTWITHSTANDING the growing importance of this subject, no work specially devoted to it has hitherto been published. Having had to inspect during the last twenty years nearly a million tons of iron and steel rails for various countries, I have obtained experience of what rail manufacturers can practically execute, as well as of what railway engineers practically require. Bearing these two points in mind, I have from time to time published observations with a view to unite both interests, -that of the producer and that of the consumer,-and to reduce the specifications and the forms of sections to standards, or types, in order to facilitate the execution of the works and to improve the construction of permanent way. The Swedish government railways, as well as private companies owning railways in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark, have during the time above mentioned consulted with me and intrusted to me their rail inspection. I therefore owe to these countries much of the opportunity which I have enjoyed of gaining experience and position. Next to Sweden, America is the country which has most liberally favored me with its confidence in placing these matters in my hands. Through circumstances not under my control there has been little exportation to, and less work done by Europe for, America during the last six years ; but the recent revival of the rail trade has been the more gratifying to me, seeing that almost all the importers of American rails are still specifying for the Sandberg rail sections and inspection. Truck-shovel dispatch systems based on linear or nonlinear programming algorithms have been in operation since the mid-1980s, with different levels of success depending on the correct arrangement of operational resources and the complexity of the mine. These systems are known for shortcomings related to the logic behind the decision-making of the operational objectives. This makes it necessary to have a human agent (dispatcher) to guide the system when the operational parameters change, creating the possibility of suboptimal decisions due to the human factor. To address this issue, the present work discusses the implementation of a methodology based on artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to assist in the decision-making of the best optimization goals arrangement when operating a fleet management system. The focus of the analysis is on the evaluation of variable goal weights in a nonpreemptive, multigoal optimization model for multiple uncertain scenarios based on regions of optimal feasibility.
