Mining companies are required by law to improve representation of women on their boards. However, progress in this regard has been slow. Boards of directors play an important role in formulating corporate strategy, risk assessment, and effective governance for sustained financial performance. Although some women have successfully maintained board seats, others have been unable to do so. It is difficult to ascertain whether women are being appointed as tokens to satisfy social pressures, as little is known about the experiences of women board members in mining, which may inform or refute tokenism. In-depth interviews were conducted with 20 women and 16 men across six listed mining companies. Thematic data analysis revealed evidence of tokenism where recruitment to mining boards is compliance-based and is informally driven by influential directors. Adverse boardroom experiences that further confirmed tokenism were reported by women, such as disregarding their contributions, condescending behaviour, and limited influence in decision-making, while other women sought to validate their competence and oppose social exclusion. This study recommends that a strong Board Chair and nominations committee is critical to ensure sustainable recruitment of competent and suitably qualified women; and further foster a culture of inclusivity and valuing gender-diverse boards.

"The Lamego mine is an underground gold mine in the Iron Ore Quadrangle in Minas Gerais state, Brazil. The mine produces 48 to 50 koz per annum, as part of the larger Cuiabá-Lamego Complex. This combined unit is AngloGold Ashanti’s largest gold producer in the Americas, contributing with 310 to 320 koz per annum.The mine started production in 2009, utilising cut-and-fill mining methods.A mining method change was trialled in 2014, introducing open stope methods. The key benefits proposed from this change are considered to be: improved safety by eliminating re-entry mining methods reduced mining costs/increased productivity from utilising bulk-mining operations.The results from the trial were encouraging, and open stoping participation expanded beyond a trial.Production from open stope areas reached 180 000 t (40 per cent of total run-of-mine; ROM) in 2015. While the change in mining method resulted in higher production rates, it also introduced a critical issue in terms of stope recovery rate.Average underbreak (unplanned loss of ore) in the larger open stopes reached 21 per cent in 2015. To manage this ore loss, a project targeting higher recovery was structured with three primary components: analyse current performance to define contributing factors (design process gaps, operating practices) investigate corrective actions apply corrective actions and maximise team engagement to ensure changes become standard practice.Within six months of commencement, a range of contributing factors had been identified, and the majority of the associated corrective actions implemented, including increased team engagement to ensure changes were not ‘once off’ actions.The outcomes show a clear reduction in underbreak (average ~12 per cent for 2016), with further improvement opportunities identified. The challenging target is now to achieve a further reduction to 10 per cent underbreak as the average for 2017. "Construction of the powerhouse for the Willow Island Hydroelectric Project, located at the Willow Island Lock and Dam, required a 120-ft deep temporary excavation inside the limits of a cellular cofferdam on the Ohio River side of the excavation and a soil-bentonite seepage cut-off wall on the landward side of the excavation. Stability analyses were performed for critical sections to evaluate the stability of the soil slopes and rock cuts using limit equilibrium, tension crack, and buckling analysis techniques. The stability analyses indicated adequate factors of safety through the landside embankment sections, and for the weighting berm soil slopes in front of the riverside cellular cofferdam. However, the results of deep-seated stability analyses through the rock supporting the riverside cellular cofferdam indicated marginal factors of safety for the 100-year flood condition. Consequently, the riverside portion of the excavation required enhanced stability measures, namely the installation of long, high-capacity rock anchors. Also, the dewatering system was modified to lower the site piezometric head to near the top of rock to improve the stability of the rock cuts.Thirty high-capacity rock anchors were installed on the upstream, riverside, and downstream sides of the cofferdam rock cut. The rock anchors consisted of multiple, seven-wire strands designed to provide the full-required design load at 60% of the strand capacity. Rock anchor loads varied from 1,968 to 2,074 kips. The maximum number of strands per anchor was 59. Bond lengths assumed an allowable bond stress of 100 psi based on the rock bond from pull-out tests.Project DescriptionAmerican Municipal Power, a nonprofit organization that owns and operates electric generation facilities for its member communities, has been in the process of constructing hydroelectric power plants adjacent to existing navigation locks and dams along the Ohio River. The Willow Island Hydroelectric Plant was recently completed on the West Virginia bank of the river adjacent to the US Army Corp of Engineers (USACE) Willow Island Lock and Dam. The plant is on the opposite river bank to the locks, and includes two turbine generating units with FERC rated capacity of 44MW at a 20-foot head differential. The Ruhlin Company of Sharon Center, Ohio was awarded contracts to construct both the cofferdam and the powerhouse. Construction began in mid-2011, and was completed in early 2016."

A significant source of uncertainty in the diamond resource contained in kimberlite pipes is the volume of the pipes. Often the material within a pipe will be mined as ore, leaving the actual geometry of the pipe as a significant source of uncertainty. It is desirable to use stochastic techniques, rather than deterministic methods, to model pipe geometry because stochastic techniques generate multiple realizations that are reproducible and can be used to assess uncertainty in pipe geometry. The proposed methodology uses sequential Gaussian simulation of pierce point locations interpreted from drillholes through a kimberlite pipe. Kimberlite pipes are approximately cylindrical in shape; therefore, the data are transformed to cylindrical coordinates to facilitate the simulation of pipe geometry. Rather than using xyz coordinates to define the pierce points, z, ??and pipe radius are used. The radius variable can be simulated in z-??space to generate multiple realizations of pipe volume. Uncertainty in the volume of the pipe can then be evaluated. This methodology is demonstrated with a kimberlite pipe at BHP Billiton’s Ekati diamond mine.

Silver and cupric ions have been proven to play the roles of catalysts to promote the oxidation kinetics of chalcopyrite in acid solution. In this study, the interaction between silver ions and cupric ions during ferric leaching of chalcopyrite in sulfuric acid solution has been investigated. The electrochemical study by Tafel analysis showed a significant boost of dissolution rate for chalcopyrite dissolution in Fe3+- Cu2+ containing sulfuric acid solution after Ag+ was added in the solution. For 10 ppm Ag addition, the dissolution rate of chalcopyrite increased to 7.94 ×10-6 A/cm2 from 3.2 ×10-7 A/cm2, when Ag+ was absent. On the other hand, the effect of Cu2+ on the dissolution of chalcopyrite in Fe3+-Ag+ containing sulfuric acid solution was not obvious from electrochemical measurements. The chalcopyrite leaching tests in different acid solutions showed that silver addition had an obvious catalytic effect on promoting chalcopyrite dissolution. Comparing the leaching rates of chalcopyrite leached in Fe3+ containing, Fe3+-Ag+ containing, Fe3+-Cu2+ containing and Fe3+-Cu2+-Ag+ containing sulfuric acid solutions, it was found in Ag+-Fe3+-Cu2+ containing sulfuric acid solution, the leaching rate was highest among all the aqueous acid systems. Further leaching tests suggested that with increase of the Ag+ concentration from 0 to 20 ppm, the leaching rate of chalcopyrite in Ag+-Fe3+-Cu2+ containing sulfuric acid solution also increased and reached 57.62% with 20 ppm Ag+ addition after 24 h. INTRODUCTION Chalcopyrite is the most important copper mineral in copper hydrometallurgy and it accounts for nearly 80% of the universal copper resource (Olvera, Rebolledo, Mora, Dixon, & Asselin, 2018). The hydrometallurgy of chalcopyrite has been intensively studied with emphasis on solving the slow dissolution kinetics of chalcopyrite in acid environment. A variety of aqueous systems, such as sulfate (Hiroyoshi, Miki, Hirajima, & Tsunekawa, 2001), chlorides (Liu, Chen, & Yang, 2017), and ammonia (Hua et al., 2018) have been studied to improve copper leaching. From another perspective, chalcopyrite leaching studies have indicated that the mechanism of chalcopyrite dissolution in acid solution is essentially electrochemical (Li, Kawashima, Li, Chandra, & Gerson, 2013). Therefore, extensive studies have recently been carried out to explain the dissolution kinetics of chalcopyrite in different media by various electrochemical techniques.

The design requirements for mine ventilation seals have undergone a radical transformation in recent years, and these revisions have greatly increased the cost of the seal designs and their construction. For example, in the past two years, new federal regulations have increased the minimum design requirement to withstand explosion pressures from 138 kPa (20 psig) to 345 kPa (50 psig) or 827 kPa (120 psig), depending on whether the sealed mine volume is monitored continuously or not. Moreover, there is still a possibility that under certain conditions (such as detonations) even higher pressure requirements may be necessary. The ability of a monolithic, stand-alone mine seal to reliably withstand the full range of current and future pressures is becoming increasingly difficult and expensive. In an effort to develop a practical alternative, the West Virginia Office of Miners? Health Safety and Training (WVOMHST) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have collaborated in a research effort to develop a practical, economic, and safe mine sealing technique that can enable mines seals to meet the full range of new explosion pressure design requirements. The basic idea is to use a barrier of common mine gob and rubble in combination with a conventional mine seal so that the pressure resulting from a gas explosion is reflected, absorbed, and attenuated, so the pressure on the ventilation seal is reduced. This paper discusses some concepts and preliminary test results for a ?Passive Mine Blast Attenuator? (PMBA) that can provide a useful alternative to increasingly larger and stronger stand-alone mine seals. Numerical models and full-scale experiments conducted at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Laboratory Experimental Mine (LLEM) show that the use of a PMBA can signficantly reduce the blast pressure and impulse on conventional ventilation seals. ShovelSense is a complete solution for bulk ore sorting at the mine face that combines robust shovel bucket mounted X-ray fluorescence sensors, with real-time material classification, fleet management integration and supporting cloud-based data infrastructure, to ensure each truck always goes to the right destination. Correct truck destinations are a challenge in many current mining settings because the material classification of a truck, which is the key input into the truck destination, is often based on estimates at block resolution (~20x20x15m), with limited adjustment for blast movement and mixing. In this contribution, we present a geostatistical, data driven approach to estimate the potential value of bulk ore sorting at the mine-face for seven open pit mines. The approach is premised on the assumption that truck loads within blocks follow a simple gamma distribution. Standard ore control data from the seven mines have been used to estimate the potential bulk sorting value at these operations and ShovelSense-integrated dispatch datasets have been used to validate these estimates for specific benches on which ShovelSense operated. ShovelSense results validate the ore control data-based value predictions and show how at mine-face bulk ore sorting value varies between distinct deposit types. In general, deposit types that have higher bulk ore grade contrasts, display more potential ShovelSense value. The manuscript concludes with the limitations and opportunities of applying the proposed value estimation approach to evaluate at mine-face bulk ore sorting opportunities for open pit operations.

Since the advent of machine coated paper in the mid 1930's, the kaolin industry has had a remarkable growth, In 1935 the domestic production of kaolin was 500, 000 tons and in 1970 the estimated production was in excess of 3. 5 million tons. The process industries which use kaolin most extensively are paper, rubber, paint, ceramics, plastics, catalyst manufacturers, ink, and pharmaceutical. The paper industry is by far the largest consumer of kaolin using approximately 70 per cent of the total tonnage mined and beneficiated. Up until 1970 the major kaolin producers were able to expand rapidly enough to supply the demand but for the first time in thirty years the demand is expected to be in excess of mining and beneficiation capacity through at least 1975. The major reason for this is the expansion of coated paper production in Europe and Japan. Two areas supply the lion's share of kaolin for the world markets. These are the Cornwall area in extreme southwestern England and a limited area of Georgia and South Carolina in the southeastern U. S. The English kaolins are primary - (found in decomposed granite) whereas the Georgia-South Carolina kaolins are secondary - (found in lenticular, continuous beds in the Tuscaloosa formation of Cretaceous age. ) The English kaolins are mined by hydraulic methods whereas the Georgia-South Carolina kaolins are mined by dragline or shovel and benefidated by using a wet process for the majority of the production and/or a dry

The paper describes the two foundation techniques - mini piles and postgrouted bored piles. The mini pile system is presented with its design and installation parameters, especially the drilling technique. Two case histories demonstrate the application under extremely limited space and traffic conditions and the required modifications of the equipment. After the description of the postgrouted bored piles and its grouting technique, the paper gives a comparison of postgrouted piles and standard piles on a large basic test in Germany. The Brooklyn Queen's Expressway, N.Y., case history shows the application of this technique after redesign of the original proposal. 1. "A paste backfill plant and underground piping distribution system was commissioned at the Brunswick Mine in June, 1998. Concentrator tailings, composed mainly of pyrite and lesser amounts of silicate minerals with a P80 of 37um (45 YO-20 pm), are pumped to the backfill plant. The backfill plant uses conventional thickening and disc filtering to dewater the solids, which are then mixed with binder in twin screw mixers. The paste is discharged through a gob hopper and one of three boreholes by gravity. Approximately 65% of the concentrator tailings will be placed underground at full production. The remaining thickened tailings will be pumped to an existing impoundment area. Application of paste technology will completely replace the use of cemented rock fill in the mine by the end of 1998.The design capacity of the paste backfill plant is a total of 360 dmtph of cemented paste through two parallel production lines. The plant is highly instrumented and controlled via a hybrid Programmable Logic Controller (PLC-5) and Fisher ProVox Distributed Control System that is in communication with the property information highway. Video and audio signals from the underground system are carried to the surface plant via a leaky feeder communications/fiber optic system.The underground distribution system consists of a network of 200mm diameter boreholes and piping. There are approximately 3.5km of boreholes and 5.5km of piping in the system. To minimize pressures, the greatest piping length from any borehole is approximately 400m with all piping being open-ended. There are no valves in the entire paste distribution system.Construction of the plant, including installation of piping to and from the plant and preparation of the underground distribution system, was completed in less than one year from the time of management approval for the $M 22.3 project."

An experimental study of iron-smelting techniques used in the South African Iron Age by H. M. FRIEDE, Ph.D. and R. H. STEEL (Visitors) The main factors involved in the primitive smelting of iron (ore, charcoal, temperature, air supply, process control) were evaluated in an experimental furnace that was constructed to the pattern of an Iron Age furnace found at Melville Koppies Nature Reserve, Johannesburg. In particular, the characteristics, action, and efficiency of skin bellows were investigated to gaina better understanding of the air-supply system used. Sixteen specimens of iron ore, slag, and metallic iron (excavated material and material produced in the experimental furnace) were submitted to analysis. The results of the analyses are reported and discussed.

An applicable Eluex process was developed for acid in-situ leaching (ISL) uranium mine in Bayanwula. In this process, uranium was adsorbed with strong base anion resin from the pregnant solution, then the loaded resin was eluted by sulfuric acid. After D2EHPA extraction, the concentrated eluate was enriched, and the loaded organic phase was stripped by sodium carbonate. The yellow cake was obtained by sodium hydroxide precipitation at last. The uranium concentration in the loaded strip solution was 52.8 g/L. Parameters of the process were determined, and the impact of the Eluex process in underground leaching was also investigated. In industrial design, 95% of raffinate went back to elution and 5% back to in-situ leaching. No significant effect on uranium leaching or resin adsorption was found.

Some technical developments of the National Uranium Resource Evaluation Program which are of general application in geochemical exploration are being studied. Results of stream water and suspended and bottom sediment analyses are compared for an area near Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Variations of uranium content of water samples with time in the North Carolina Piedmont are seen to correlate with rainfall. Ground water samples from coastal and piedmont areas were analyzed for helium. All media sampled provide useful information when properly analyzed and interpreted as part of a total geological analysis of an area.

Solvent extraction techniques were used to determine the extraction sequence of yttrium and the rare-earth elements in an amine solvent extraction system. Single-stage extraction with Primene 81-R resulted in separation factors of 3.8 between yttrium and dysprosium and 25 between yttrium and cerium. Yttrium was concentrated in the aqueous phase. EDTA and DTPA, as aqueous phase counterextractants, enhance separation factors in mine-rare-earth sulfate systems. Yttrium separation from heavy rare-earth elements exhibits marked sensitivity to the position of yttrium in the selectivity scale of the rare-earth elements with the sequestrants. Yttrium-ytterbium separation is more effective with EDTA, whereas yttrium-dysprosium separation is more effectively increased with DTPA.

J. E. Harris (Berkeley Nucclear Laboratories, England)—Greenfield et al.11 attribute abrupt changes in slope of their log o/log i curves for heat-treated Mg/0.5 pet Zr alloy (zA) to &apos;atmosphere&apos; locking. It is proposed here that a more reasonable explanation of the apparent strengthening at low rates of strain can be based on precipitation either during the preanneal or during the creep tests. All the tests were carried out above 0.5 Tm where solute atmospheres are likely to be largely evaporated2 and can migrate sufficiently rapidly so as not to impose any &apos;drag&apos; on the moving dislocations. McLean3 has derived an expression for determining the temperature Tc above which, due to the high-migration rate of the atmospheres, Cottrell or Suzuki locking can play no part in determining creep strength. This expression, which holds for an applied shear stress of not greater than 5 X 107 dynes per sq cm is: Tc/Tm= 7/6.8 - log10? where i = secondary creep rate The values for T, corresponding to the maximum and minimum reported creep rates at each temperature have been calculated from the data of Greenfield et al. These are given in Table VII. All the test temperatures were above T,, the margin being greater for the higher temperatures and for the lower strain rates where the breaks in the log s/log ? curves occurred. Dorn and his collaborators14, 17 have studied systematically the effect of solute hardening on the creep properties of an A1/3.2 at. pet Mg alloy. In the temperature range where strain aging occurred in tensile tests, abnormally high-activation energies for secondary creep were obtained but at temperatures above 0.43 Tm, solute alloying did not have any effect on the creep parameters. Moreover, there have been no reports of any strain aging phenomenon during elevated temperature tensile tests with ZA material.18 Instead of the observed strengthening being due to atmosphere locking, it is now proposed that precipitates play an important role in enhancing the creep strength of the material. There are two possibilities—precipitation of zirconium hydride during the high-temperature preanneal and/or precipitation of the hydride or a-zirconium during creep. On the basis of the former the results can be interpreted in terms of a critical stress being necessary to force the dislocations through or over preexisting precipitates. From the latter, if the strengthening is due to pre- cipitation during the test then hardening should be associated with a critical strain rate. At low rates of strain, time is available during the tests for precipitation to occur either directly onto dislocations (thus pinning them) or generally throughout the matrix (which would impede dislocation movements). Examination of the data of Greenfield et al. suggests that both mechanisms may be operative since they observed precipitation during creep and also found that their alloys exhibited high-creep strength in the early stages of the low-stress tests, i.e., before creep-induced precipitation had time to occur. It is not easy to understand why they considered that precipitation of zirconium hydride is unlikely to occur at 600°C while it can take place in tests in air at as low a temperature as 200°C. Precipitation of the hydride during the preanneal cannot be ruled out merely on the basis of metallographic examination. Hydride precipitates in ZA type alloys are very small and can only be accurately resolved in the electron microscope.9 For example, in this laboratory20 hydride platelets with major dimensions <(1/10) µ have been observed by electron transmission through thin film specimens of hy-drogenated ZA material. Complex interactions between dislocations and such particles are illustrated in Fig. 12. Additional evidence for precipitation during pre-annealing is provided by the data presented in Greenfield&apos;s Fig. 1 and Table IT. These show that the creep strength at 200o and 400°C increases with the time of preanneal at 600°C. Such increases cannot be explained on the basis of increases in grain size alone for further improvements in strength were observed when the material was annealed for longer times than that required to stabilize the grains. Although the main discussion is confined to ZA material, similar arguments can be used against the strain aging hypothesis proposed to explain the binary Mg/Mn alloy data. In this case no precipitation is possible during the preanneal, but precipitation-hardening during creep can occur.

Our program continually emphasizes the importance of making no tradeoffs between consumer acceptance of sustainable products and sustainability investments. We also work diligently to overcome the challenges of engaging employees around the world to implement a single coherent sustainability strategy that delivers great results.

The equilibrium phase diagram of the Pu-Cd system is presented based on data obtained by differential thermal analysis, metallography, and electron-microprobe X-ray analysis. Liquidus temperatures range from 320° to 934°C. The system contains one congruently melting compound, PuCd, (945°C), and three incongruently melting compounds, PuCd, (800°C), PuCd, (730°C), and PuCd11 (410°C). A liquid-miscibility gap extends from 2 to 60 at. pet Cd with the monotectic reaction isotherm at 910°C. INTEREST in the potential use of plutonium alloys as reactor-fuel materials has prompted investigation of the phase equilibria in plutonium binary systems. A cursory investigation of the phase equilibria in the Pu-Cd binary system was conducted by differential thermal analysis (DTA), metallography, and electron-microprobe X-ray analysis (EMX). Extensive solid solubility of cadmium in both e and 6 plutonium was predicted1 based on atomic radii and electronegativities. Liquid immiscibility between these two elements was also predicted based on Mott&apos;s extension of Hildebrand&apos;s method. In the only previous investigation of the Pu-Cd system,2 two intermetallic compounds, PuCd11 (incon-gruent melting point 406°C) and PuCd8, were identified. EXPERIMENTAL The plutonium metal used in this work had a total impurity content of 500 ppm; the major impurities were: carbon (215 pprn), silicon (75 ppm), iron (60 ppm), nickel (40 ppm), and aluminum (25 ppm). The cadmium was reagent grade with a purity of 99.99 pet. The DTA technique for the study of plutonium alloys was previously described in detail.3 The alloys to be studied were prepared in tantalum DTA specimen capsules which were sealed by inert-gas welding. The alloys were homogenized in the liquid state in these sealed capsules which prevented the loss of cadmium by vaporization. Only the thermal arrests in the DTA heating curves were used to define the transformation temperatures of the system since supercooling affected many of the results during cooling. After the alloys were analyzed by DTA, the same alloys were used for the metallographic studies. Metallographic examinations were conducted in the manner described for plutonium alloys., No reaction was detected between the alloys and the tantalum capsules. Alloys for EMX analysis were placed in metallographic mounts together with specimens of unalloyed plutonium and cadmium which served as standards. The samples were highly polished but unetched. No protective coatings were applied to the surfaces of these radioactive specimens. Such coatings are detrimental to the excitation conditions and have been found to be unnecessary for the control of radioactive contamination. RESULTS The results of the DTA studies are presented in Table I. The phase diagram, constructed from these data plus the metallographic and EMX results, is presented in Fig. 1. The congruently melting compound, PuCd2, was identified by the occurrence of a maximum melting point (945°C) at 33.3 at. pet Pu-66.7 at. pet Cd and by the presence of a single phase in this composition.
