Hurricane Katrina caused significant damage to transportation structures on the Gulf coast in August, 2005, including the destruction of the US 90 Bridge over Biloxi Bay, Mississippi. Part of the successful design/build proposal for the replacement bridge included a comprehensive test pile program of indicator piles and load test piles in the geotechnical investigation program. A total of 22 indicator piles were installed on the project using the pile driving analyzer to monitor the pile behavior. Five load tests were performed: two axial Statnamic, two lateral Statnamic, and one static axial. The results of the test pile program established driving criteria for production piles that included end-of-drive blow counts and pile tip elevations with an appropriate allowance for setup. The program also confirmed that the planned installation equipment and techniques of GC Constructors, a joint venture of Massman Construction Co., Kiewit Southern Co., and Traylor Bros., Inc., would install the piles to the design tip elevations before production piles began. An extensive program of restrike measurements at a range of times after initial driving of the indicator piles provided a systematic documentation of pile setup in the soil profiles on the site. These resistance values were used to develop a dimensionless setup factor ?S? as the ratio of the restrike resistance to the end of drive resistance. This factor varied from 1.5 for piles penetrating clays and tipped in sand to 3.0 for piles bearing completely in clay and helped establish an end-of drive blow count that included an allowance for setup. The CAPWAP analyses of restrike data with setup and the load test data were used to confirm the design unit side shear and end bearing values developed from the borings and static capacity calculations and to select the design pile lengths.

PARTIAL phase diagrams of titanium with iron, cobalt, and nickel have been established by previous investigators.1-3 These diagrams seem to be reliable, at least for concentrations of titanium ranging from 0 to about 50 at. pct. More recently, Long and his collaborators have presented a tentative titanium-nickel diagram covering the titanium-rich side.' These various studies indicate that in each system three intermediate phases exist and correspond to the compositions Tia, TiX, and TiX2 (or TiX3). The purpose of this paper is to review the available information on the crystal structure of these phases and to give the results of additional X-ray diffraction studies. Previous Work A summary of the work of Wallbaum and his collaborators"-' is presented in table I. The first intermediate phase on the titanium-rich side of the three systems, with iron, cobalt, and nickel, is of the Ti2X type and has a face-centered cubic structure. Although it is stated that the unit cell contains 96 atoms: no lattice parameters are given. The second phase is centered around the compositions TiX for the three systems. The crystal structure of this phase is mentioned in a short note" as being body-centered cubic (CsCl type), but no parameters are given. The analogy between the three systems, which is perfect as far as the two phases of the type Ti2X and TiX are concerned, disappears at the titanium-poor end of the diagrams. In the system titanium- iron, TiFe2 has an hexagonal (MgZn2 type) struc-ture with the parameters given in table I. The existence of TiFe3 has also been reported8 (table I) but was questioned by other investigators2 and is also refuted by the present study. In the system titanium-cobalt, a phase corre-sponding to the composition TiCo2 has been investi-gated by Wallbaum and Witte6 who claim that the structure is cubic (MgCu2 type) for alloys slightly deficient in cobalt and hexagonal (MgNi2 type) for alloys slightly deficient in titanium. The parameters of the two phases are given in table I. In the system titanium-nickel, the nickel-rich phase corresponds to the composition TiNi3 and has been described as hexagonal7 with the parameters given in table I. The present investigation was initiated for the purpose of filling in the gaps in the knowledge con-cerning the structure of the various phases sum-marized in table I. "Any innovative approach made in non-ferrous metallurgical industry centers upon developing new processes, saving materials, improving production quality, and bornagain materials. Aqueous processing is commonly used to treat lean grade or more complex ore bodies. Its sustenance largely depends on energy and environmental compliance including water and wastewater management. The present paper focuses the importance of using particle size distribution and surface area measurements during ammoniacal dissolution of a Cu-Pb-Zn sulphide bulk concentrate and with an overview of the effect of water salinity on the process chemistry and residue mineralogy. Accordingly, an effort is made here to discuss the emerging perspective and highlight the recent successes and trends in terms of energy savings in non-ferrous hydrometallurgy.IntroductionThe nature and structure of the global energy industry is likely to change significantly in the 21st Century. Results fit the expression: D= 1.58 x lgs exp-------==-----) cm2,sec THE diffusion coefficient for hydrogen in the metastable ß-phase titanium alloy containing 13 pct V, 11 pct Cr, and 3 pct A1 was measured as part of an investigation of the effects of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of titanium alloys. Several theories on the mechanisms of hydrogen embrittle-ment include diffusion of hydrogen at ambient temperature as an important step in the embrittling process.'-5 In hydrogen-contaminated a-ß titanium alloys, it has been postulated that the rate-controlling step may be the rate at which hydrogen diffuses from the ß phase to stress- or strain-nucleated brittle hydride platelets at the a-ß interface.' However, embrittlement of the all-ß alloy investigated in this work may proceed by a different mechanism, since this alloy can be embrittled without the formation of detectable hydride platelets.6 Troiano has suggested that in this case the mechanism of delayed failure or embrittlement is similar to that proposed for high-strength steel, i.e., repeated crack initiation caused by a decrease in bonding energy as hydrogen diffuses to points of high tri-axial stress at the root of a notch. In both types of alloy the rate of embrittlement is believed to be controlled by diffusion of hydrogen in the ß phase. Accurate hydrogen-diffusion data in the vicinity of room temperature should therefore be of some assistance in understanding the mechanisms of embrittlement in these two classes of titanium alloys. Diffusion of hydrogen in pure titanium has been studied by Wasilewski and Kehl7 at temperatures above 500°C. Their measurements on diffusion in the ß phase were extended below the ß-a transformation temperature (882°C) to approximately 600°C. This was possible because of the 8 stabilizing effect of hydrogen. No results at lower temperatures have been published and there are no data in the literature on hydrogen diffusion in the ß -phase alloy used in this program. Hydrogen diffusion in metals is generally investigated by measuring the rate of transport of hydrogen past a solid-gas interface, i.e., by absorption, permeation, or degassing-rate measurements. These methods produce accurate diffusion data when bulk diffusion is the rate-determining step in the over-all process. However, at the lower temperatures of interest in hydrogen-embrittlement studies or under conditions where surface films are present, the measured rates may be surface-controlled and the calculated diffusion coefficients will be in error. Surface effects were eliminated in the present work by using a modification of the common welded-couple technique m which two bars with uniform but different compositions are joined before the diffusion anneal." The same type of step change in the initial concentration vs distance curve was produced by electrolytically hydrogenating thin-strip specimens which had been electrically insulated over half of their length. Concentration vs distance curves were determined, after appropriate diffusion-annealing treatments, by vacuum-extraction analyses of transverse samples sheared from the strips. Diffusion coefficients were calculated by the methods of Grube.M This technique was feasible because of the large concentrations of hydrogen which can be charged into p -phase alloys without the formation of hydrides15'16 and because of the extremely low degassing rates observed when hydrogenated titanium alloys are heated in air. Results of research are presented examining the extent to which the analytical characteristics of the relatively distinct coal bands from a variety of coal seams can be related to each other. This paper dis-cusses an approach for developing a practical coal petrographic quality control program based on conventional analyses, most of which is part of the standard A.S.T.M. procedure. The work is a final follow-up to Part I of this series which was prepared by the authors as an approach to applying conventional coal petrography to single coal seams. Recent published work by the authors entitled Petrography for Coal Mining and Coal Prepration: Part I dealt with interrelating various chemical and physical properties of coal1 measured using conventional analyses made on distinct petrographic bands taken from single coal seams. Since most coal production facilities process coal from a single coal seam or from very closely related coal seams in the same area,2 emphasis on interrelating the properties within a single seam appeared appropriate. The distinct petrographic bands were analyzed on the assumption that such differentiated data would be more representative of a heterogeneous coal seam than the single analytical value commonly used to characterize each property of an entire seam.34 Effort was directed at demonstrating the extent to which the interrelated chemical and physical properties 5,6 could be developed into nomographs or petrographic standardization graphs. Thus, one analysis, determined on a series of petrographic fractions separated from a single sample, was used to estimate numerous other properties in each fraction by referring to the previously established petrographic standardization graphs. This conventional approach to coal petrography was undertaken as a suggested feasible means by which a few coal analyses could be employed to develope a more penetrating knowledge of the properties of coal from any given seam in order to monitor more extensively its performance at the point of utilization. Such procedures can support development of the type of in- formation commonly sought through automated testing and through the use of computers.7 The broad knowledge which can be developed through these procedures is intended for application in the generation of an analytical profile or broad characterization of coal. These estimates were not intended as replacements for individual coal analytical tests. In this expanded second part of the research program, distinct petrographic bands from nine coal seams in the Central Appalachian Region were physically and chemically analyzed to elucidate the extent to which this concept of conventional petrography could be broadened for application to numerous coal seams. In presenting this second phase of work, the relationships developed are presented individually and not in a connecting series of nomographs or petrographic standardization graphs as in the previous work, thus leaving open the combinations of possibilities to individual interpretation and application. MATERIAL AND EXPERIMENTAL WORK Nine coal seams, representing a wide range of rank, from the Central Appalachian coal fields were used in this study. The distinct petrographic bands from the Kittanning, Pond Creek, Jawbone, Tiller, Poca-hontas No. 3, No. 2 Gas, Eagle, Winifrede, and Pittsburgh coal seams were separated by carefully removing a portion of each band at the face of the seam. The following were determined: ash, sulfur, free swelling index, heating value, bulk specific gravity, volatile matter, Hardgrove Grindability Index, and Gieseler Plastometer measurements. Determinations, where procedures were available, were carried out using ASTM standard procedures.8 Bulk specific gravity was determined using a kerosene volume displacement procedure modified from a method applied by Headlee and McClelland of the West Virginia Geological survey,9 Those bands with a bulk specific gravity greater than 1.60, which is generally above the practical specific gravity cleaning range of bituminous coals, were excluded and no analyses were performed. Much of the initial organization of this second phase of work was developed through the extensive use of a computerized statistical monitoring program (see Ref. 4). In the chlorination process for TiO2 pigment production, blends of titania feedstocks such as ilmenite, synthetic rutile (SR), natural rutile, upgraded slag, and chloride-grade slag are reacted with coke and chlorine at a temperature of around 1000°C to form TiCl4, which is the main product, and other waste metal chlorides. TiCl4 is the main feed material for the TiO2 pigment-making process. Feeding different titania materials to the chlorinator affects the amounts of coke and chlorine required for the process, the amount of waste generated, waste disposal costs, the amount of TiCl4 produced, and bed build-up rates. These factors influence the value of the feedstock. Generally, a higher TiO2 feedstock is more valued since less waste is generated and less reagents are consumed. To quantify the impact of different feedstocks on the chlorinator, a techno-economic model was developed to describe the chlorination process and estimate process variables at steady state. This paper describes the development of the model and studies in which the model has been used to quantify the effects of using different feedstocks.

Methane is increasingly considered as a promising reductant for metal oxides, including chromite. To assess the possibilities of such reduction route, the gas-solid reactions between Ar–CH4–H2 gas mixtures and synthetic chromites are studied between 950 and 1050 °C. The influence of Mg and Al additions on the reduction-caburization of (Fe,Mg)(Cr,Al)2O4 solid solution is investigated thermodynamically, structurally and kinetically. The product phases are examined by x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). The reaction rate is derived from real-time exhaust gas measurements and post-reaction product analyses such as oxygen analysis. Kinetic models are proposed based on the product phase morphologies and confronted with the empirical data.

As ore deposits become finer grained the requirements for regrinding before cleaning or leaching have increased substantially. Despite this increasing need, there is no standard test to predict grinding energy requirement below 70 microns. The standard Bond Mill test applies for coarser ball milling, but is not appropriate for stirred milling with fine media grinding to 70 microns. With no industry -standard test, the energy requirement is often made on the basis of supplier estimates or benchmarking against similar applications. Yet suppliers use vastly different scale-up methods which result in widely different energy estimates. Estimates can differ by 100-300% even for similar mills. This must result in serious errors to install either too much or too little grinding power. This paper explores this by comparing the actual performance of full scale regrind mills against their original design estimate. It confirms that serious scale-up errors have been made, and have then been perpetuated by ?benchmarking?. The test conditions to achieve accurate power estimation are discussed. The essential test conditions are: continuous (not batch) tests, ensure steady state (no coarse fraction retained in test mill), correctly account for classification, measure energy directly (not inferred), and using the same media size as the full scale installation. Failure to correctly address even one of these factors can bias results by 40%; failure to address several multiplies the error.

Frontier/Traylor is presently completing construction of twin tunnels for the Tri-County Metropolitan Transit District of Oregon’s (Tri-Met) westside lightrail system. The tunnels are each 4,550 m (14,935 ft) in length and 6.48 m (21.29 ft) in diameter. The 1/3 of each tunnel was driven from the west portal using drill and blast methods and the remaining 2/3 was driven from the east portal using a TBM. The paper describes: The difficulties encountered by the TBM mining the weathered Columbia River Basalts. The execution of drill and blast work despite challenging ground conditions, stringent noise and vibrations specifications, and public relations problems. The acoustic vibrational spectra of impacted rock slabs were examined at the Denver Research Center, US Bureau of Mines, in an attempt to characterize the behavior of partially detached mine roof rocks. The ultimate goal of this study was to develop a technique or instrument that could provide a quick, accurate, quantifiable measure of mine roof stability. The power spectra of unstable rock slabs were found to contain more energy in the range of 200 to 1000 Hz than solid rock. Comparison of the power contained between 500 and 1000 Hz with that between 3000 and 3500 Hz provided a quantitative measure of rock stability. A lightweight prototype field instrument was designed, constructed, and field tested. This battery-powered instrument computes the power contained in the two frequency bands, compares their magnitude, and displays a number related to the stability of the block tested. Field tests showed the instrument provided reliable measurements of block stability even under conditions of noise that would have seriously degraded the accuracy of the standard methods of roof sounding.

A computerised cataloguing system for geological specimens is described. The catalogue is designed for use with a compactus-type storage system. The information stored in the catalogue for each specimen includes the type of specimen, locality information in terms of standard ~ap sheets and descriptive location, geological age, stratIgraphy, and specimen descriptions. The catalogue can be interrogated at any level of detail on the basis of any combination of these specimen parameters.Other information stored for each specimen 'is the compactus address, collection date, reference information and the type of analyses performed on that specimen:Any mterrogatlon produces a listing of those specimens which satisfy the search criteria.

POWER is furnished to the Climax Molybdenum Co. by the Public Service Co. of Colorado over two 100,000-volt line to a bank of three 3333-kva. Transformers 100/13.8 kv. These transformers arc so designed that with the addition of forced cooling their capacity may be increased 33 1/3 per cent at 12,000-ft. altitude. Under present conditions, these transformers are operated at 140 per cent of their rating with forced air cooling. On the secondary side of this bank there is a 15-kv., 1200- amp. Westinghouse oil circuit breaker provided with automatic reclosing relays allowing three successive short circuits before lockout. From this breaker 13.8-kv. power is transmitted to a central switching station (Fig. I) where all circuits radiate to the different operations of the property. Each circuit is protected by a 23-kv., 600-amp. oil circuit breaker with by-pass and isolating disconnecting switches. MINE Power at 13.8 kv. enters the mine through a ventilation raise over a three-conductor, size 1-0 varnished cambric insulated, leaded, steel-wire armored cable, insulated from 17 kv. This power is received and distributed through one switching station and four underground substations, shown in Fig. 2. No. 370 substation (Fig. 3) contains three 250-kva, 13,800/440-volt, single-phase Pyranol transformers protected on the high-voltage side by a 600-amp. manually operated oil circuit breaker. This station serves 20 slusher-hoist motors, a 45-kw., three-phase, 220-volt electric furnace, a Massco hot miller for tempering and milling Timken detachable bits and a hoist with 175-hp. motor on the No. 3 development shaft. Also at this shaft are three pumps. One two-stage pump, 1200 gal, per min., 100-ft. head, 3600 r.p.m., driven by a 150-hp. motor, is at the bottom of the shaft. Two deep-well pumps, 500 gal. per min., 500-ft. head, are at the collar of the shaft. Under normal operation the one pumping 1200 gal. per min. is controlled by a float switch to take care of the water. If this pump fails, or if its capacity is insufficient, the first 500-gal. pump is automatically started, and if still more capacity is needed the second 500-gal. pump automatically starts. Time delay relays are provided on the deep-well pumps, so that if power fails the column will have time to drain before the pumps restart. On failure of any of these, an alarm is sounded in the train dispatcher's office, so that mechanics can be sent to ascertain the cause of failure and make repairs. The cable from No. 370 substation is run to the switching station, in which are four15-kv., 600-amp. direct-current solenoid-operated oil circuit breakers. History.—The history of gold-mining in Georgia and Alabama antedates the discovery of gold in California. A very large proportion of the gold used in the United States previous to 1849 was produced by these States. A great deal of this history is merely tradition, and no reliable statistics can be obtained ; yet a personal examination of the gold-fields of Georgia and Alabama indicates that tradition is as fairly reliable, with regard to the history of these gold-regions, as it is in any similar cases throughout the world. In Georgia, the history of gold-mining dates back to 1829, when the first gold-mining excitement in the United States occurred. In Alabama, the discovery of gold was made some years later through the work of prospectors, incited by the rich finds in the Georgia mining camps. The greatest product of gold in these States was between the years 1840 and 1849. In Lumpkin county, Ga., and Cleburne county, Ala., the districts from which the most of this gold was taken, the tailing-dumps are silent witnesses of the extensive operations which were carried on by the primitive and crude methods then known. Reference is made to the approach to mine cooling in which the service water is used as one of the means of distributing refrigeration, and attention is drawn to various engineering disciplines or functions necessary for effective distribution and reticulation of cold water from refrigeration plant. The demand for service water is intermittent, the peak flow-rates being typically two to three times the average flowrate. The refrigeration plant, on the other hand, must preferably be operated steadily throughout the day and night, with the result that a large storage dam for cold water must be incorporated into each system in order to even out the surge in demand for water. These dams should be operated as constant-temperature, variable-volume reservoirs. The conventional cascade system involving dams on each level is not the best for sending water down mines, and schemes are described that avoid the need for such dams. Reference is made to various tests that were carried out, and to several large systems that were installed. Management and organizational problems that could arise as a result of new technological developments in mine cooling are referred to, and cost figures are quoted to indicate the large potential savings, In addition to the improved environmental conditions, that can be achieved through the use of integrated water systems.

Triaxial compression tests at various confining pressures and temperatures, as well as tangent modulus tests using ultrasonic waves, were conducted for wax-coated granular composite materials. The material used is a surface for Thoroughbred horse racing. The purpose of these tests is to examine how track shear strength and tangent modulus at a range of loads respond to changing temperatures. Previous work has shown that a wide range of operational temperatures are experienced which have been reproduced in the lab. Using differential scanning calorimetry, it is confirmed that these operational temperatures correspond to distinct thermal transition regions for the wax that is used to coat the sand in these surfaces. Preliminary results show that both shear strength and tangent modulus are sensitive to temperature changes with maximum strength and modulus correlating with major DSC wax transition regions.

The sands of Snake River, Idaho, have long been known to contain gold. They were worked by some of the first prospectors who came to Idaho, and on the banks still stand the ruins of camps abandoned for years. There are almost always prospectors searching for gold during the season of low water, and it is not an infrequent thing to find a miner of the old type actually panning the sand, or the prospect-hole which he has just left. There is more or less mystery about these miners and their methods of finding the spots where they work. They are always subjects of much speculation to the ordinary traveller. The rich discoveries are, for the best of reasons, concealed until the claims can be taken up. It is difficult to find a place where there are no prospects, but the " colors " are so very fine that they do not offer much inducement to enterprise. The California miner usually values a color at from 5 to 10 cents, often the latter; while on Snake River it would take 100 colors, or even more, to make that amount.

The comminution at grain size level for the liberation of valuable minerals usually requires the highest size-specific energy. Therefore, the full understanding of the comminution process at this level is essential. Models based on the Discrete Element Method (DEM) could be a helpful tool for this purpose. In those, the mineral microstructure, which has a dominant influence on the fracture behaviour, can be described in great detail. One major concern, however, is the missing representativeness of simulated models. In this study, a method to overcome this limitation is presented. The authors show how a realistic microstructure can be implemented into a particle bed comminution simulation using a two-dimensional Bonded Particle Model (BPM). The improved algorithm based modelling approach is exemplarily compared to an equivalent real experiment. Thereby, the focus is set on the analysis of the interfacial breakage and the capability of the simulation to reproduce the experimental results. The comparison of the results shows that simulations at grain size level allow a more detailed evaluation of the fracturing behaviour. This is of special interest as the aim of comminution in mineral processing is not only the size reduction of coarse particles, but an efficient liberation of the valuable components.
