To date, Anglo Research has carried out several projects, based on the techniques developed in the AMIRA P9 (AMIRA International Limited), to develop comminution and flotation models for several Anglo Base Metals and, to a lesser degree, Anglo Platinum flotation plants. Plant optimization is thus achieved through steady-state sampling, model-fitting and simulation using the JK SimMet and JK SimFloat software packages. The surveys can vary depending on the needs of the plant/client. The survey can therefore include as little as a single piece of equipment, an entire milling/flotation circuit, or a complete circuit from primary comminution to final flotation concentrate (i.e. the ?integrated survey?). The presence of the AR team on-site usually precipitates in face-value observations that can lead to initial improvements. This stems from the knowledge-sharing on best practice that exists in parallel with the surveys. Numerous (reasonable) changes can then be simulated, thus indicating the optimization step most likely to result in the best efficiency improvements. The simulations can include changes in the flowsheet, ore characteristics, mill loads, grinding media size, change in grind, flotation residence time, air hold-up and several more. Plant surveys can result in process changes that provide the plant with either: higher plant tonnage, improved plant grind, additional flotation recovery and/or improved product grade. The additional benefit of performing an integrated plant survey is that the effects of an optimization change in the comminution circuit can be simulated using the flotation model. This paper describes a number of case studies where individual and integrated plant surveys were conducted by AR for Anglo Base Metals.

"Records of individual wells form the basis for the successful operation of any company engaged in the production of petroleum. The expense attached to the compilation of records is negligible in comparison with the benefits resulting from their use. There a company has not a complete system of records, immediate attention should be given to the preparation of forms upon which to collect data, and, to the collection of data for these forms. The records needed vary with each district, but for each field a set should be adopted that will best meet the needs of each property. Practically all operators, and particularly all successful operators, agree on the necessity of good records, shopping what the wells have done, are doing, and may be expected to do in the future. Any operator realizes the value of records of sales of oil and should place almost equal emphasis on the records of well logs and histories showing the east and present performances of wells. Indeed, trustworthy records are absolutely necessary for the proper operation of any oil or gas property.Complete records should be kept on each well from the time the location and elevation are determined until the well is abandoned, and the engineer should review old records often enough to be familiar with the past performance of the various wells and with the conditions that affect production. Desktop X-ray powder diffraction using a D2 PHASER equipped with fast linear detector was performed on several iron ore and mill scale samples. Data were analysed using cluster analysis and Rietveld quantitative phase analysis. The quantitative mineralogy of both materials could be established. Thus the input is provided for understanding the energy consumption and the CO2 emission during iron production. Furthermore, tabletop XRD allows to distinguish iron ore from mill scales and to quantify their mixtures.

For this reason and also because it is closely related to sculpture, whose arms are the support of its life, it is very highly esteemed. DURING the year 1907 an investigation of the Clinton formation in New York has been carried out under the direction of the State Geologist, and a full account of the results has been prepared for publication.1 The more important economic features of the report are summarized in the present paper. Previous knowledge of this, the type, section of the Clinton has been contributed mostly by Hall and Vanuxem in their reports for the Natural History Survey of New York, which were issued in their final form in 1842-43. Brief accounts of the ore-occurrences have been given by B. T. Putnam,2 J. C. Smock,3 A. H. Chester,4 and E. C. Eckel.5 Prof. C. H. Smyth, Jr.,6has discussed the origin of the Clinton ores in two papers, which, so far as the local occurrences are concerned, have removed all doubt that may have existed on that subject. In this paper, results of a novel synthesis method of carbon-coated LiNi113Mn113Co11302 cathode material for lithium-ion battery are reported. The carbon coating was produced from a precursor, glucose, by microwave-pyrolysis method. The structure, morphology and electrochemical performance of the bare and carbon-coated LiNi113Mn113Co11302 were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and charge-discharge tests respectively. The L8(27) orthogonal experiments were carried out to optimize LiNi113Co113Mn1130z/C technological conditions. The conditions of the orthogonal experiments were that the glucose content were 1.5 % and 4 %, the holding time were 15min and 30min, the heating temperature were 400 °C and 500 °C and the solvent were H20 and CH3CH20H. The main experiment target include specific capacity at 0.1C and 0.2C, Capacity retention rate, medium voltage attenuation rate and The fifth discharge medium voltage. The data were analyzed by Minitab 14 statistics software. The results of analysis of variance indicated that the most influential factor was the glucose content despite of discharge rate. Secondly, the effect of the solvent was equivalent to the holding time.

Magnetite concentrate is pelletized and then hardened by elevated-temperature oxidation to hematite, to produce pellets for ironmaking. Previous work showed that the rate of oxidation is under mixed control of gaseous mass transfer of molecular oxygen through the pellet pores, and solid-state diffusion into the oxidizing grains. Because of the partially limiting role of solid-state diffusion, concentrate size distribution strongly affects pellet oxidation. Previously, a simple mixed-control model was formulated to describe isothermal oxidation. In that model, the main effect of concentrate size distribution was on the plateau level of oxidation which is reached at a given temperature. However, the extent of plateau oxidation increases with increased temperature, requiring a more complex model for non-isothermal oxidation. In this paper, predictions of the non-isothermal model confirm the strong effects of concentrate size distribution and oxygen enrichment. In particular, a greater fraction of coarse magnetite particles would be beneficial, decreasing the size of the macroscopic unoxidized pellet core.

In view of the shortage of soft water all over the Middle East countries, seawater may be used to replace the fresh water in flotation beneficiation. The flotation process required about 7 m3 of fresh water/ ton ore. This article aimed to study the effect of seawater cations and anions on the flotation process of four important mineral commodities. The adsorption of collector, zeta-potential, zero point of charge and floatability of pure minerals were studied. The individual effects of different cations and anions that are predominant in seawater, within their more or less actual concentrations were studied on individual mineral and on groups of them. The troublesome Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions, in the anionic circuit could be controlled by soda ash addition to the pulp before the anionic collector. The addition of sodium silicate improved the floatation selectivity of mineral mixtures and natural ore. At the optimum conditions the calcareous phosphate ore yielded a concentrate recovery of 83% with a grade of 34% P2O5, with 0.61%MgO, which from an ore assaying (25.3% P2O5 and 9.4% MgO).

The successful injection of liquids into subsurface permeable formations for production stimulation, storage, or waste disposal requires a rapid, precise, and accurate method of determining the permeability of porous solids. This report describes a method and apparatus, developed by the Bureau of Mines, that use the principle of specific-volume permeametry. Calibration of the apparatus over a wide range of permeabilities and standardization of several apparatus constants have eliminated many of the tedious calculations and problems of manipulation common to some other methods. Improvements in reproducibility and accuracy have resulted from reducing experimental measurements to one parameter--time. Specific permeabilities of reservoir rock samples are determined directly from a chart that relates elapsed time to a permeability equivalent to that determined by bubble-tube measurements.

ABSTRACT Cameco Corporation is revitalizing its Key Lake Operation uranium mill in northern Saskatchewan. The mill currently uses ammonia stripping in solvent extraction (SX) and ammonia yellowcake precipitation. As part of the revitalization, the company considered installing strong acid stripping in solvent extraction (used at its Rabbit Lake Operation), which would lead to using hydrogen peroxide for uranium precipitation. As part of the process evaluation, tests were carried out to study how the drying temperature in indirect fired dryers would affect the uranium peroxide yellowcake precipitate properties. This paper discusses the test work results, including the relationships between drying temperature and product reactivity with water, product colour, product grade, and energy input requirements.

"Precipitation-strengthening 6xxx alloys are widely used for building and construction and automobile industries due to their high strength, good weldability and corrosion resistance. However, their elevated-temperature properties (250–300°C) decrease rapidly due to the fast-coarsening of precipitates. On the other hand, dispersoid-hardening is one of the most efficient approaches to improve the elevated-temperature properties. Therefore, the evolution of dispersoids during heat treatment in Al-Mg-Si-Mn alloys was investigated in the present work. Various heat treatments with temperatures ranging from 300–500°Cfor up to 24 hours were performed. Electrical conductivity and microhardness were measured while optical and scanning electron microscopy combined with image analysis, were used to characterize the dispersoids. Special emphasis was placed on the evolution of the size and number density of the dispersoids under different heat treatment parameters. It was found that dispersoids started to precipitate at 350°Cfor 1 hour. Nucleation and growth were the main mechanisms at temperatures up to 400°Cwhile coarsening occurred at temperatures above 450°C. The quantitative results indicated that dispersoids precipitation reached the optimum condition after treatment at 400°Cfor 2–4 hours with a fine size and high number density, resulting in the highest hardness.INTRODUCTIONThe precipitation-hardening 6xxx aluminum alloys with major alloying elements of Mg and Si are one of the most widely used aluminum alloys for building and construction and automobile industries (Dinaharan & Murugan, 2012). In recent years, there have been increasing demands for aluminum structural components to be used at elevated temperatures (250–300°C) for different applications. However, the mechanical properties of 6xxx alloys at elevated temperature are typically reduced due to the rapid coarsening of precipitates at 250–300°C. It has been reported that the yield strength (YS) of AA6061 in the peak-aged condition drops from 276 MPa at room temperature to only 30 MPa at 315°C(Kaufman, 1999). Therefore, it is a key concern to improve the elevated-temperature properties of 6xxx alloys to expand their range of applications."

"The effectiveness of two this compounds for copper sulphide depression in molybdenite flotation has been examined with batch bench scale tests.Both thioglycollate and trithiocarbonate proved to be good depressants producing results similar to those f or cyanide and hydrosulphide. Ferrocyanide was ineffective on the samplematerial tested.The depressing effect of thioglycollate was readily reversed by an addition of xanthate.IntroductionThe separation of molybdenite from copper sulphide minerals has been practised for a long time(1,2). The predominant scheme is to depress the copper sulphides while capitalizing on the ready floatability of molybdenite to effect the separation. There are many recipes for depressing the copper minerals(3), among them the addition of sodium cyanide, particularly if the copper is present primarily as chalcopyrite; some form of sulphide whether as sodium sulphide, sodium hydrosulphide or phosphorous pentasulphide when there is a mixture of copper sulphides such as bornite, chalcocite and chalcopyrite; potassium ferro cyanide may be used when chalcocite is the principal copper sulphide; peroxide or hypochlorite; as well as heating in the presence of lime. There are different mechanisms by which these reagent s depress the copper sulphides. Sodium cyanide and the sulphide-producing compounds apparently reduce the potential of the copper sulphides to the point where they ar e rendered unfloatable by xanthates . Another study(4) showed that after cyanide addition, chalcopyrite was rendered un floatabl e until the REDOX potential (measured with a gold electrode with a saturated calomel reference) had become more positive than -250 mY. If the chalcopyrite pulp was conditioned after the cyanide addition the REDOX potential increased slowly, whereas if air was introduced during the conditioning the potential r ose much more rapidly. The difference in time to reach the desired level of - 250 mV was as much as 20 minutes' 25 minutes being required when air was absent but less than 5 minutes when air was admitted . These observation s demonstrate some of the problems encountered when using cyanide to depress sulphides such as chalcopyrite . The system adjusts to counteract the depressing effect of the additive. To overcome this tendency it is necessary to either add an overdose at the beginning or to more or less continuously add the regulating reagent. In this study cyanide solution was added under automatic control to maintain a specified REDOX potential."

INTRODUCTION A number of tunnels supported and permanently lined by steel-fiber-reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) have been built in North America in the 1980s. The material is more economical than, and technically equal or superior to, conventional shotcrete using wire mesh. The design and construction of SFRS-lined tunnels is straightforward, and only a few new design principles, laboratory tests or construction equipment modifications appear necessary in order to use this material. Modern tunnel Contractors may use cyclic drill-and-blast methods on some tunnels, with intermittent shotcreting as part of an orderly cycle. The Dry Mix method is most suitable for cyclic, intermittent, relatively small-scale shotcreting. However, modern Contractors excavating tunnels continuously using large long Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) or Roadheaders may prefer Wet Mix shotcreting on a mass production basis. In either case, the use of steel-fiber-rein¬forced shotcrete (SFRS) promotes the rapid and economical excavation of tunnels. The addition of microsilica will improve SFRS properties and reduce rebound, and is expected to become standard practice with SFRS in North America, as it now is in Scandinavia. HISTORICAL REVIEW Steel-fiber-reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) at the present time (1985) is essentially conventional shotcrete with straight or deformed steel fibers added, and in general SFRS for tunnel linings encounters the same problems that conventional shotcrete does. However, automation changes the tasks performed by people and may introduce new tasks. For the system to function optimally, these tasks must be designed taking human abilities and limitations into account. Humansystems integration refers to systems engineering processes that ensure that human-related issues are adequately considered during system planning, design, development, and evaluation. During procurement of automated systems, a human-systems integration program plan should be prepared that describes the human-systems integration activities that will be performed to address each of the six core domains of human-systems integration: staffing, personnel, training, human factors engineering, safety, and health.

"It is generally known that the formation of calcium ferrite is favorable during the iron ore sintering, which dominatingly contributes to the improvement of strength and reducibility of the finished sinters. In this study, effects of roasting temperature and 02 content of inlet gas on the sintering mineralization properties of typical iron ores, including hematite, limonite, specularite and magnetite, were investigated. The results showed the amount of calcium ferrite initially increased then decreased with the increase of the roasting temperature. The temperature of maximum calcium ferrite generation amount for different iron ores was determined as follows: hematite and limonite was 1275 °C, whereas specularite and magnetite was 1250 °C. Increasing 02 content of inlet gas was advantageous to the generation of calcium ferrite during the sintering. The sequence of 02 content affecting the mineralization properties of different iron ores was determined as follows: magnetite > hematite > specularite > limonite.IntroductionThe mineralization property of iron ore plays a significant role in the mineral composition and microstructure of finished sinters, which determine the quality and output of the sinters [1-2]. The mineralization process of sinters is composed of solid-phase reaction, formation of liquid-phase and crystallization. The formation and crystallization of liquid-phase is the foundation to the mineralization as the quality of the sinter is poor when concreted by solid-phase consolidation [3-4]. With respect to the iron ore sintering, liquid-phase regarded as bonding phase is generated between the iron ores and fluxes at high temperature [5]. Calcium ferrite is the most favorable liquid-phase among the bonding phases which dominatingly contributes to the improvement of strength and reducibility of the finished sinters [6-8]. Especially for high iron-low silicon sintering and high basicity sintering, making sure sufficient calcium ferrite quantity and reasonable distribution is crucial to the sinters [9-10]. Therefore, carrying out the researches on the high temperature reaction properties of iron ores is of great significance [11]."

The advent of the more efficient and effective rare-earth roll (RER) separator in the early 1980s began a new era of dry magnetic separation. The RER units quickly became the separator of choice within the materials processing industry. Though RER separators are now commonplace throughout the world, only modest advancements have been made to the original design. This paper details recent, more significant, rare-earth magnetic separation developments. These developments maintain the best features of existing technology while minimizing shortcomings. The discussion includes discerning features that aid in better metallurgical performance. Also discussed are improved mechanical aspects that allow for both easier operation and maintenance. Performance details from various test programs are included.

The support of intersections in coal mines remains an important safety issue, mainly because the large diagonal span compromises the stability of the roof. This structural weakness is further exacerbated if the intersection is developed incorrectly, the pillar corners fail or the crosscuts are angled (not perpendicular). This report details the current support systems used and investigates unplanned falls of ground in intersections in coal mines throughout the United States. A possible failure mechanism is proposed and some suggestions are made to improve the effectiveness of the support in these vital areas.
