"GENERAL BACKGROUND/CONTEXT The £300 million Bond Street Station Upgrade project will provide essential congestion relief and step-free access to an important interchange and destination station in the heart of the London Underground network. In 2010 London Underground (LU) let a design & build contract to Costain Laing O’Rourke (CoLOR), with the works to be completed in early 2017. CoLOR’s lead designer is Halcrow-Atkins JV (HAT). The station upgrade works comprise the following principal elements: •,A new satellite ticket hall on the North side of Oxford Street •,Two additional escalators and stairs providing congestion relief to the Jubilee line platforms •,Four lift shafts to provide step-free access between the different levels of the station •,Additional stairs to Central line platform level •,Tunnelled connection to the Crossrail station immediately to the south •,Connecting passageways, including ten connections to existing station tunnels. To achieve this, an existing property at 354-358 Oxford Street has been purchased and demolished, and the basement deepened to make provision for the new ticket hall. From this basement two circular shafts have been sunk, providing construction access for the tunnelled passages and lift and escalator shafts. The tunneling is principally in the London Clay stratum, which is widely recognized as a favorable tunneling medium, although the deepest parts of the works extend into the Lambeth Group strata which consist principally of stiff clays at this level but also contain water-bearing sands. The majority of tunneling has been carried out using mechanical excavation and sprayed concrete linings but other techniques have been used in areas where SCL is not practicable.A key challenge for design and construction of the works has been spatial constraint, in particular due to: •,The existing underground station layout •,The Limits of Deviation for the works •,The small construction site at 354-358 Oxford Street •,Overlaying Third Party assets including Listed buildings, sewers and water mains."

Introduction Preparing a report on fluorspar economics in the US could have been somewhat complicated at one time. This was because the number of producers, both large and small, derived production from different locations through-out the western US and the southern Illinois and western Kentucky fluorspar districts. Companies, such as Allied Chemical and Williamson Mining, operated in the Jamestown district of Colorado. In Walden and Salida, CO, the Colorado Fluorspar Co. operated mines and mills. In New Mexico, both Du Pont and Allied had mines and mills. In the Illinois-Kentucky district, US Steel, Rosiclare Lead and Fluorspar, Minerva Oil Co., and Marathon Oil all produced spar for the US market. Now all of the companies are out of the fluorspar business and, with the closing of the Seaforth Mineral Co.'s Inverness Mining Co., only Ozark-Mahoning Co. survives as a domestic producer. History Ozark-Mahoning Co., as it now exists, was formed in 1946 by the merger of Ozark Chemical Co. and Mahoning Mining Co. Ozark Chemical Co. was started in the 1920s to produce sulfuric acid for two refineries located in Tulsa, OK. Mahoning Mining was originally formed by the founders of Ozark Chemical Co. and the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Co. to produce fluorspar and associated minerals from properties in the southern Illinois and western Kentucky fluorspar district. In 1937, Mahoning Mining started an exploration program, employing contractor-operated churn drills to look for reserves in Hardin and Pope Counties in southern Illinois. Based on known reserves in the area and the results of the exploration program, work was started in the fall of 1938 to build a selective flotation plant at Rosiclare, IL. The mill was completed and put into operation in August of 1939. The company's first mining efforts were in the Cave-In-Rock district just north of Cave-In-Rock, IL. The deposits in this area were of the Manto or bedded type. They have been the mainstay of the company's operations in the Illinois-Kentucky fluorspar district. In 1950-51, the company expanded its operations by purchasing fluorspar properties from Colorado Fluorspar Co. at Walden, CO. This location was operated from 1952 through 1958 and from 1968 through 1973 when it was closed permanently. In 1974, Ozark-Mahoning Co. was purchased by Pennwalt Corp. Presently, it is a wholly-owned subsidiary of that corporation. As the only major domestic producer of fluorspar in the US today, the company's ability to survive under the flood of imported material is directly related to the four major segments of its operations. These are: exploration, mining productivity, maintenance, and marketing. All are done in-house. Exploration The Southern Illinois fluorspar district is located in the most complexly faulted area of the central US. The formations are sedimentary in nature and range in age from Devonian through Pennsylvanian. The deposits are small, they range in size from a few thousand tons up to 900 kt (1 million st), with the average minable deposit being around 544 kt (600,000 st). The ore occurs in both nearly vertical vein deposits and in Manto or flat lying bedded deposits. Due to the relatively small size of the deposits and the depth at which they occur, a good low-cost exploration program is essential to ensure that new finds of ore are equal to the mining extraction rate. Ozark maintains a leased land position in Pope and Hardin Counties that will fluctuate somewhere between a low of 40 km2 (10,000 acres) up to a high of 129 km2 (32,000 acres), depending on total size of tracts leased. Most all lands are obtained through a standard lease purchase option, with a small minimum royalty per acre during the normal 10-year option period. A form of column flotation cell is described in which the contact between the feed and the air stream is made in a mixing device at the top of a vertical downcomer. The air-liquid mixture flows downward to discharge into a shallow pool of pulp in the bottom of a short cylindrical column. The bubbles disengage and rise to the top of the column to overflow into a concentrate launder, while the tails are discharged from the bottom of the vessel. The main advantages of the device described are that the overall height of the column is reduced to about 1 m (3 ft), and the column can be self-inducing with respect to the air supply. Experimental results are given from tests on a feed stream to a conventional zinc cleaner circuit. Using wash water to reduce gangue entrainment, the column gave high concentrate grades and high recoveries.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of the impurities, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, and iron (in low percentages) on the mechanical properties of electrolytic titanium. The strength and hardness of binary Ti-O, Ti-N, and Ti-C alloys are linear functions of alloy content in the composition range investigated. Compared to oxygen and carbon, nitro-gen is the most effective strengthener and hardener, followed by oxygen, then carbon. When the carbon concentration is above 0.10 percent, carbides are present, and strength and hardness are relatively unchanged. For equivalent hardness levels, Ti-Fe alloys are stronger than binary titanium alloys containing oxygen, nitrogen, or carbon. However, the strengthening is related to the presence of transformed beta in the structure.

Our recent studies revealed that the sulfide minerals in contact with water during grinding produced hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) where the amount of H2O2 production by the minerals found to be in the order of pyrite > chalcopyrite > sphalerite > galena. The H2O2 effect on the oxidation of pulp components and its influence on the concentrate grade and recovery in flotation have been studied and the results have been presented and discussed in this paper. Studies have also been carried out to build correlation between percentage of pyrite in the concentrate, grinding conditions and concentration of OH•/H2O2 in the pulp and as well of controlling the formation of these species through known chemical means for depressing the generation of the oxidant. Flotation tests using a complex sulfide ore with the same reagent scheme that is being used at Boliden concentrator in Sweden but with the addition of i) collector and depressant, ii) Na2S reductant and iii) inorganic (EDTA) and organic (TETA) surface modifiers, during grinding stage have been performed to judge the beneficial or detrimental role of H2O2 on the selective flotation of sulfides. The results demonstrate that the selectivity of metal sulfides against pyrite increases with increasing generation of H2O2 in the pulp liquid. H2O2 is also found to be a better oxidant in chalcopyrite-galena flotation separation than the commonly used K2Cr2O7.

The extractive industries addition to the International Valuation Standards (IVS) is scheduled for publication in the next edition of the IVS book in January 2005. This will provide guidance for valuation of minerals and petroleum industry assets of all types for all appraisal uses. It will provide asset valuation support to the International Financial Reporting Standards for the stock markets of the world, and a global umbrella standard which can be supplemented for local needs by institutes and regulators. This paper discusses implementation of the IVS within the minerals industry and important issues that the industry should confront.

This report describes a study, conducted jointly by BethEnergy Mines Inc. and the Bureau of Mines, to assess the effects of longwall front abutment loading on various supplemental support materials utilized in a predriven recovery room. The purpose of the predriven recovery room is to reduce longwall equipment transfer time by eliminating the premove preparation associated with conventional recovery methods. In addition, the room provides a large area in which face salvage equipment can maneuver. Results of four recovery-room study areas show the progression and influence of the front abutment on the longwall panel and supports and their subsequent behavior. The best performance (i. e. the support that most facilitated recovery) of support material was achieved through the use of a concrete mixture which had a sand content of 35 percent by volume. The longwall transfer time was reduced by 30 percent which translates to a production advantage of 37,000 raw tons of coal per panel.

The new ship-submersible system with R/V Ka'imikai-o-Kanaloa as a mothership and the PISCES V as the submersible completed its first season of dives. The dives involved deployment of the PISCES V in the Hawaiian Islands between the months of July and October 1996. Submersible deployments up to depths of 2,000 meters in sea states up to a high three were made. The new hook and clasp deployment and retrieval connection for PISCES V to the telearm was shown to be an effective system for handling the PISCES V with the A-frame. The shipboard multibeam survey and seawater sampling capability proved to be especially effective in re-mapping the summit of the submarine volcano Loihi following a major volcano-tectonic event and for following the source and configuration of the new hydrothermal plume. Following the earthquake swarm of July 17 to August 18,1996, major changes in the geological setting of Loihi submarine volcano took place. Prior to the seismic event, the geology and structure of the summit of Loihi was represented by a platform-like area 8,100 meters long and 5,400 meters wide enclosed by the 1,200-meter depth contour. The summit was characterized by the presence of two prominent pit craters and eastern and western crater located at water depths of 1,100 and 1,370 meters, respectively. A hydrothermally active volcanic cone, named Pele's Vents, was located at a depth of 960 at the southern edge of the summit. The floor of the summit of Loihi was largely covered by prismatic talus, with interstitial hydrothermal clays. Pillow and tube lavas with volcanic cones 5 to 50 meters high were exposed along the axes of the southern and northern rift zones. The inner margin of the summit displayed fissures and normal faults with the downthrown component towards the center of the summit. The pre-earthquake structural data suggest a pre-caldera structural stage for Loihi. Maximum sustained hydrothermal activity observed on Loihi over the past 10 years existed at Pele's Vents with other sporadic venting occurs along the summit platform and along the south rift. Following the earthquake swarm, the hydrothermally saturated Pele's Vents cone gave way and slid into the inner pit crater. Subsequently, the observed above- bottom hydrothermal plume source deepened from 960 to 1,160 meters, possibly emanating from the same intrusive heat source as Pele's Vents. The observed inward collapse of the summit structures and subsequent opening of fissures gave rise to diffuse venting from the newly formed caldera-like depression with the bottom-hugging hydrothermal pool located at depth between 1,250 and 1,220 meters at the sites of the pit craters.

Although age-hardening in an aluminum-base alloy containing magnesium was observed by Alfred Wilml as early as 1911, it was not until 1919 that a theory of the mechanism of age-hardening was proposed. Merica, Waltenberg and Scott12 studying the age-hardening characteristics of Duralumin at the National Bureau of Standards, came to the conclusion that age-hardening of this alloy is caused by the precipitation of CuAl2, which is less soluble at the aging temperature than at the solution heat-treating temperature. It was postulated that the initially precipitated particles were of fine colloidal dimensions but that they gradually grew in size. Maximum hardness was assumed to be attained when the particles reached a critical size. This theory was at first received skeptically, since it was a widely accepted view at that time that the solid solution state should represent the hardest state of an alloy. Shortly thereafter, Jeffries and Archer proposed their well-known slip interference theory.'13 They suggested that age-hardening was accomplished by the precipitated particles acting as keys interfering with slip along crystallographic glide planes. They showed that this mechanical theory led direct,ly to the assumption that maximum hardening would be produced by particles of a critical size, which they suggested would have a diameter approximately 10 times that of the aluminum atom. This contribution amplified and explained so rationally the age-hardening theory of Merica, Waltenberg and Scott that wide acceptance resulted. Objections to Simple Precipitation Theory From time to time certain experimental facts have been cited against the simple precipitation theory. The first of these was the discovery by Fraenkel4 that, although the electrical resistivity of Duralumin decreased during aging at higher temperatures (from 100' to 250' C.), it increased during aging at ordinary temperatures. "Deep concentration of iron ores involves extraction, in addition to magnetite concentrate, of hematite and martite concentrates and recovery of other valuable components. A flotation technology was designed specifically for finely disseminated hematite ore, allowing producing saleable hematite concentrate containing 64-66% Fe. The main process challenge is caused by the presence of other ferruginous minerals such as carbonates, silicates, and phosphates, and fine hematite and martite mostly concentrated in the -0.044 mm fraction. Main operations of the processing circuit are removal of slime, flotation to remove impurities (carbonates, phosphates etc.) with an anionic phosphorous collector in an alkaline environment, hematite and martite flotation using same collector in a slightly acidic environment to produce commercial iron concentrate. Tailings of wet magnetic separation of magnetite containing 24.5% Fe and finely disseminated hematite ore containing 51% Fe were processed to produce iron concentrates with a yield of 15% and 50%, respectively, containing approximately 65% Fe and 5% of silica. Hematite flotation tailings had the highest content of gold (up to 0.09 - 0.11 g/t), while in other products it never exceeded 0.02 g/t. Using a Knelson concentrator was able to recover 40 to 45% of the gold into 3.31 g/t Au gravity concentrate. The success of gravity concentration is due to high gravitational contrast of gold to mostly quartz and aluminosilicates in the hematite flotation tailings. In general, the proposed process can be used as a solution to the challenge of selective concentration of finely disseminated iron minerals."

Using- galvanic cells of the form Sn(liq)/Sn" (LiCl-KC1-SnCl,)/Sn-Ag (alloy), measurements have been made of relative thermodynamic properties of the a, C, E, and liquid phases of the Ag-Sn alloy system. Partial heats of solution of the components in the liquid alloys lzave also been observed by direct cal-orimetric measurement in an isoperibol calorimeter. The thermodynanzic quantities are disczlssed in relation to structural and other properties and the existence of anomalous minor fluctuations in the partial heats and entropies of solution in liquid alloys is tentatively suggested. In the course of a recent electro motive-force study of the thermodynamic properties of Sn-Ag-Pd liquids,' some measurements were also performed on the Ag-Sn binary system. Most previous thermodynamic studies of this system have been concerned with the liquid state. Measurements confined to the limiting heat of solution of silver in liquid tin have been made by many calorimetric workers2 while high-temperature calorimetric measurements of the heats of formation of the full range of liquid alloys are reported in the early work of Kawakami~ (1323°K) and more recently by Wittig and Gehrin~(1248°K). Electromotive-force studies on liquid alloys have been made by Yanko, Drake, and Hovorka' (606" to 686°K; 86 to 99.4 at. pct Sn) and by Frantik and Mc Donald' (900°K; 30 to 90 at. pct Sn). The only known measurements on the solid state are of heats of formation of the a, £, and c phases; these values were obtained using tin-solution calorimetry, at 723"K, by Kleppa,~ whose investigation also yielded heats of formation of liquid alloys containing more than 64 at. pct Sn. The present experiments on the Ag-Sn alloys include a re-examination of the liquid phase and, because of the dearth of free-energy data for the solid state, attempted measurements on the a, c, and E phases. The principal new feature of electromotive-force results obtained for the liquid phase was an indication of anomalous fluctuations in the partial heats and entropies of solution of tin at certain compositions. However, since the values for these thermodynamic quantities were determined from the temperature coefficients of cell potentials, which are commonly subject to considerable error, confirmation by calorimetric measurements was considered desirable. A detailed investigation of the partial heats of solution of the components in the binary liquids was made using a liquid metal solution calorimeter. I) GALVANIC CELL STUDIES a) Experimental Details. Measurements were made, as a function of alloy composition and temperature, of the potentials of reversible galvanic cells of the form: ~n(liq)/~n++/~n-Ag (solid or liquid alloy) Details of the apparatus and experimental techniques have been given elsewhere.' so that a brief account will suffice here. Molten salt, 58 mole pct LiC1-42 mole pct KC1, containing small amounts (1 to 2 mole pct) of stannous chloride was used as the electrolyte. The salts were dehydrated by pre-electrolysis and vacuum -drying techniques. Cells were established under an argon atmosphere by immersing tin and alloy electrodes in the molten salt contained in a large silica tube, heated in a vertical resistance furnace. The tube was sealed at the top by a head plate provided with openings permitting the simultaneous insertion of six electrodes, a central thermocouple sheath, and connections to vacuum and argon lines. Temperatures were controlled to *0.2"C over prolonged periods, with maximum variation over the electrodes at any time of 0.l°C. Temperatures were measured with a standardized Pt/13 pct Rh-Pt couple. The electromotive force of this and the cell potentials were measured on a Cambridge Vernier potentiometer and short-period galvanometer. Alloys were prepared from Pass "S" tin (99.999 pct) and Johnson-Matthey high-purity silver (99.999 pct) by melting in evacuated silica capsules and quenching in cold water. For liquid phase experiments, pieces of the resulting alloys were remelted into prepared silica electrode units, while solid electrodes were prepared by remelting into 3-mm bore tubing, inserting a cleaned molybdenum lead wire, and quenching to produce uniform rods about 3 cm in length, with soundly attached leads. In all cases remelting was done under an argon atmosphere. The solid electrodes were subsequently annealed in evacu ated silica tubes for 14 days at about 20°C below the solidus and quenched. Analyses showed that these techniques produced uniform electrodes with no significant change from weighed out compositions. b) Results and Discussion. Measurements were made on about forty alloys in the solid and liquid states, over varying ranges of temperature between 550" and 1050°K. This custom has obviously died out, be it that the articles are nowadays of such a high standard that nothing can be added or be it that the receivers of the Journal suffer from an information inflation and do not read the articles anymore. This paper reviews the results of an extensive study of microstructures and mechanical properties in bainitic linepipe steels. The research was carried out as a collaborative project between Queen's, Stelco and CANMET. Basic studies of phase transformations and mechanical properties in these steels established important relationships between processing schedule and microstructure evolution, and between final microstructure and mechanical properties. The best combination of strength and toughness properties is obtained with a microstructure comprising a matrix of intragranularly-nucleated bainite (`acicular ferrite - AF') and small (~ 0.5 µm) dispersed particles of martensite (`M/A'). We describe this as a dual-phase AF+M/A microstructure. An experimental study on 15-mm thick plate determined the window of steel composition and processing parameters which gives the dual phase AF+M/A microstructure. The minimum strength and toughness properties for Grade 621 (X90) linepipe steel can be achieved by either a lean steel composition (0.04C-1.77Mn-0.04Cr¬0.32Mo-0.31Ni-0.29Cu-0.08Nb) with extreme processing parameters, or by a higher alloy composition (0.04C-2.07Mn-0.50Cr-0.51Mo-0.04Nb) with a more industrially realistic processing schedule. It is proposed how this approach could be extended to obtain higher strength linepipe grades.

FLOTATION of sulphide minerals and native metals is no longer a practical difficulty. The underlying scientific principles of the method, although not explored in anything like complete detail, have been formulated with sufficient breadth so that the direction of attack on any specific case is clearly indicated. It has been known since the earliest days of flotation that certain of the nonsulphide nonmetal minerals-e.g., sulphur and graphite-would respond to flotation by oils as sulphides do; therefore they have been grouped with sulphides in many patents. But since the development of the chemical theory of collection, 1,2,3 this similarity in action has been one of the facts cited in disproof of the theory by opponents of the hypothesis. 4 5-1 Air levitationt of certain oxidized minerals, both metalliferoust and nonmetalliferous, and separation thereby from other oxidized minerals, is a recent development in practice, although the discovery of the method dates back 17 years .7 This paper presents evidence that the principles underlying the air levitation of the nonsulphide nonmetal minerals are the same as those utilized in the flotation of the sulphides and native metals. It will be apparent immediately to anyone with knowledge of mineral concentration that separation of air-levitated minerals in water from minerals not so levitated is a simple matter of water-gravity concentration, the separating device employed depending solely upon the size of the particles treated and the buoyancy differences effected by the levitation. The usual separating means employed are: (1) a flotation machine for fine, slimy and for well aerated granular material; (2) shaking tables for granular less aerated material. A number of wells were drilled at two phosphogypsum stacks, one at P-21 owned by IMC and the other at Agrico's South Pierce Stack. Each well was sampled, and composites representing 5-ft increments were leached with synthetic rainwater to determine the extent of metal and nonmetal migration. To simulate what was occurring in the stack, composite samples were placed in a column, so that the column represented the stack in miniature form. Leaching experiments showed that both metals and nonmetals moved down the column when water was added to the top of the column. Data obtained from P-21 showed that with time the concentration of metals and nonmetals reached equilibrium values. The concentration of Ca, SO4, F, Si, and PO4 were -600 ppm,~1,500 ppm, 32 ppm, 14 ppm, and 22 ppm, respectively. Column leaching of South Pierce material, representing 0 to 55 ft of stack, showed that after 355 in. of water, the stack was near equilibrium values down to the 33-ft level. With continued addition of water, the portion of the stack at equilibrium would continue to increase and eventually reach the values observed for P-21. The test showed that the sulfate concentration of the effluent from the stack would never reach the USEPA standard value of 250 ppm. During the leaching test, it was determined that the permeability of the phosphogypsum in the columns was 0.000103 cm/sec. This number was used in the modeling. The data obtained from the leaching experiments cast some doubt on the practice of entombment now being practiced for closure of phosphogypsum stacks. The data clearly shows that with time, the amount of material leaching from the stack is low in concentration, with only the calcium and sulfate at higher levels. When a stack is closed at an existing operating plant, allowing rainwater to fall on the stack and capturing the solution in the existing pond system would eliminate the need for covering the stack, since with time the closed stack would continue to leach and at some point reach the equilibrium values of the P-21 stack. Entombment means that the leachable material in the stack will always be there and will require monitoring forever. Allowing rainwater to decontaminate the stack may be the best environmental solution to the problem.

ALBERT SAUVEUR, Cambridge, Mass.-The author expresses the belief that steel will not fail under fatigue when subjected to ultimate stresses unless the stresses exceed the elastic limit or the limit of proportionality. I think this statement is contrary to the evidence. It is conceivable, however, that a stress ever so small does produce a permanent set, although so slight that we cannot detect it with the instruments at our disposal. Nevertheless the repetition of this small stress a great many times will finally break the piece and the nearer, we approach what we call the elastic limit, the quicker will the piece break under fatigue. Current mine production planning, scheduling, and allocation of resources are based on mathematical programming models. In practice, the optimized solution cannot be attained without examining all possible combinations and permutations of the extraction sequence. Operations research methods have limited applications in large-scale surface mining operations because the number of variables becomes too large. The primary objective of this study is to develop and implement a hybrid simulation framework for the open pit scheduling problem. The paper investigates the dynamics of open pit geometry and the subsequent material movement as a continuous system described by time-dependent differential equations. The continuous open pit simulator (COPS) implemented in MATLAB, based on modified elliptical frustum is used to model the evolution of open pit geometry in time and space. Discrete open pit simulator (DOPS) mimics the periodic expansion of the open pit layouts. Function approximation of the discrete simulated push-backs provides the means to convert the set of partial differential equations (PDEs), capturing the dynamics of open pit layouts, to a system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). Numerical integration with the Runge-Kutta scheme yields the trajectory of the pit geometry over time with the respective volume of materials and the net present value (NPV) of the mining operation. A case study of an iron ore mine with 114 000 blocks was carried out to verify and validate the model. The optimized pit limit was designed using Lerchs-Grossman?s algorithm. The best-case annual schedule, generated by the shells node in Whittle Four-X yielded an NPV of $449 million over a 21-year mine life at a discount rate of 10% per annum. DOPS best scenario out of 2 500 simulation iterations resulted in an NPV of $443 million and COPS yielded an NPV of $440 million over the same time span. The hybrid simulation model is the basis for future research using reinforcement learning based on goal-directed intelligent agents.

Since 2016 Gerdau Ouro Branco has been producing steel plates of various qualities and grades. However, it was not until 2018 that the first plates produced by accelerated cooling process were made available for external testing, in this case for large diameter UOE pipes manufacturing. Recent line pipe and OCTG specifications are showing that the oil and gas market still consumes regular API grades, such as X60, X65 and X70, however with increasing wall thicknesses, reaching values up to 1.5 inches. These specifications also demand longitudinal and transverse tensile guarantees and drop weight tear tests in temperatures as low as -40°C. Projects with these types of mechanical properties present process requirements as challenging as those necessary for higher API grades in lower thicknesses. This paper shows the steel design concepts and rolling routes for achieving the necessary properties for X70 steel plates in 28.15 mm. The microstructural features were also investigated and associated with the production process and the tensile and toughness results. Finally, challenges such as tensile anisotropy and DWTT abnormal fracture are presented.
