BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance, or BMA, is AustraliaÆs largest coal miner and exporter, and is currently responsible for around a quarter of AustraliaÆs total annual coal exports. BMA and its predecessors have been part of the Queensland mining scene for around 40 years, developing world-class mines, a port, overseas markets, and an international reputation for quality and reliability. From its production base in QueenslandÆs Bowen Basin, BMA produces a broad suite of coals which are supplied to 73 customers in 24 countries. BMA was formed in June 2001 as a partnership between BHP Billiton and Mitsubishi Development Pty Ltd, under which the two companies share equal ownership and management of eight Central Queensland coal mines û Goonyella Riverside, Broadmeadow, Peak Downs, Saraji, Norwich Park, Gregory, Crinum and Blackwater û and the Hay Point coal export terminal near Mackay. This case study focuses on Peak Downs Mine, which was the second largest open cut mining operation to be developed in the northern Bowen Basin for the original CQCA Joint Venture. The first coal was mined in April 1972 and today, Peak Downs has a production capacity of over nine million tonnes of coking coal per annum. The mine is located 30 km south of Moranbah and 195 km south west of the Hay Point port facilities. Coal is mined by open cut mining methods using six draglines and two truck/shovel stripping fleets for overburden removal. Coal seams are mined using excavators and front-end loaders and 210 tonne capacity coal haulers.

Based on underground observations made in .the coal mines of the Dominion Coal Company Ltd., this paper deals with the stress phenomena in the approach roads and headways and in the gob areas associated with the longwall method of total extraction. The deformation of roadways during development and the deformation of roadways during the total extraction period is delineated and presented in graphical form .. Conclusions are made as to the feasibility of the introduction of the retreat method of longwall extraction in one of the colhenes. The importance of future studies are enumerated, especially. those pertaining to the determination .of the opti.m.um sizes of protective pillars and to increasing the efficiency of the current methods of artificial roadway support.

The CERAMEC pressure filter is used for the filtration of fine materials whose cake moisture cannot be achieved with vacuum. Development work has been carried out to achieve a well-controlled cake forming and cleaning of the filter media as well as an efficient solids discharge system. Operating costs are low due to low energy input and negligible consumption of pressurized air.

On average, one to two fatalities occur every year when a miner is struck or pinned by a continuous mining machine (CMM). Proximity detection systems offer an effective means to prevent these types of injuries and fatalities by sensing the presence of a miner and automatically disabling machine motion. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) is expected to finalize a regulation that would require the use of proximity detection systems on all CMMs. Approximately one-fourth of all CMMs in use in the United States are already equipped with such a system. The use of these systems will save lives, not only by automatically preventing accidents but also by acting as a tool for educating miners and reinforcing safe work practices. Researchers at the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) have conducted a series of field evaluations to quantify the performance of these systems in an underground coal environment. These field evaluations measured the distance at which the warning and stop zones were activated. The technology provided consistent activation of the warning and stop zones under many of the conditions tested. However, some performance inconsistencies were observed which present opportunities to improve the reliability of proximity detection system technology. Some of the notable variables that caused significant changes in performance and should be considered in the design, implementation, and use of proximity detection systems include interaction with the trailing cable, performance changes during tramming, and orientation of the miner-worn component.

The Bohemia district, situated about 30 miles southeast of Cottage Grove, Oreg., in the Calapooia Range, has been the major producer of lead and zinc in Oregon. Sporadic production has been Maintained from the district since its early discovery about 1858. In 1942, a selective-flotation mill was built at the Champien mine, which operated for only a short time and was forced to close because of the war and lack of labor. The Champion mill reportedly has been operated as a custom mill for the treatment of ore from the Musick and Helena mines, located in the district sometime in the past. This report summarizes the results of laboratory ore-dressing studies made on ore samples from the Musick and Helena Mines.

In the last decade, the copper industry in China has developed rapidly and attracted the world’s attention. The production capacity of refined copper has grown remarkably from 4.578 million tons in 2010 up to 9.029 million tons in 2018, accounting for about 40% of the global refined copper production. And now, China has become the biggest refined copper producer in the world. This paper summarizes the application of modern copper metallurgical technologies such as Outotec flash smelting/converting technology, Cyclone smelting technology, TSL (ISA/Ausmelt) smelting/converting technology, Jinfeng side blown smelting and Baiyin side blown smelting technology, Chifeng side blown smelting and continuous top blown converting technology, SKS bottom blowing technology, Dongying two-step smelting technology, copper electrorefining with high current density, etc. in China’s copper industry, analyzes and compares the characteristics of those technologies and presents the great efforts of China’s copper smelters in adapting to the increasingly strict emission standards and improving economic benefits of copper smelters. INTRODUCTION China has been the biggest refined copper producer in the world for many years. China produced million tons of refined copper in 2018, accounting for 40% of the copper smelting production in the world, and of which, roughly, 70% of the copper concentrate was imported, mainly from Chile, Peru and Australia. ICSG (International Copper Study Group, 2017) shows clearly the position of top 20 countries of copper production and copper mine production (Figures 1 and 2). Blast Furnaces, Reverb Furnaces and Electric Furnaces dominated China Copper Smelting for quite long time till 1980s. The first modern copper smelting technology (flash copper smelting) was introduced into China in 1980s, then followed by Noranda, Ausmelt and ISA. Since then, China copper smelting technology stepped into modern time. Since 2000, old processes (Blast Furnace, Reverb Furnaces and Electric Furnaces) were phased out and replaced by modern smelting technologies. China Copper Production has been increasing dramatically (Figure 3).

Ball wear in wet grinding mills has been the subject of considerable discussion in the last few years. Its importance to millmen is obvious in view of the fact that ball wear may cost from 2 to 4 per ton of ore for the more fortunate operators and many times this cost when a refractory ore must be reduced to a fine state of comminution. Consequently, any factual information that may be obtained on the nature of ball wear may be applied to introduce changes leading to lower ball consumption and therefore also to lower costs. In 1940, while employed with the Britannia Mining and Smelting Co., Britannia Beach, B.C., I had occasion to investigate factors that might affect ball consumption. We performed a number of tests, which will be briefly described. These tests originated as a result of changing from a 3½-in. ball to a 2-in. ball of different type of manufacture and were motivated by the desire to obtain the best possible type of 2-in. ball. Our testing was helped by the fact that the company operated a one-ton electric furnace, so that it was quite easy to make steel changes. It should be emphasized at the beginning that these tests produced results that in their general application to milling should be interpreted qualitatively rather than quantitatively. As will be evident in the description of the method used in testing, the balls were subjected to an intermittent batch grinding treatment, which may have produced results in rate of steel wear that may not have an accurate correlation with steel consumption in full scale mill operation. However, with this bed and rather arbitrary method of testing, results were obtained that may be of some interest and may stimulate further work on this subject. Unfortunately, owing to pressure of war work, our tests, which we had intended to repeat on a continuous grinding operation, had to be discontinued. Method of Testing Tests Were made in a Small cylindrical mill, rotating at 72 r.P.m. Internal dimensions of the mill were 10½-in. dia. by 9 in. The cylindrical inner surface was lined with rubber and the two ends were formed by steel plates. A charge of 2000 grams dry feed and 2000 C.C. of water was added evev 2 hr., the mill being drained of pulp before the addition of each charge, by tilting and sluicing with water. The mill was run On afternoon and night shift for daily periods of about 15 hr. total grinding time, and each test lasted from 60 to 150 hr. This batch method of testing involved a higher average pulp temperature in the mill, which undoubtedly affected comparative results in Some of the tests. PRESENT flotation processes depend almost entirely on the buoyant properties of air bubbles to effect separations of mineral and gangue, but there is no convenient method for measuring aeration in flotation cells. Consequently the relation between aeration and cell performance has not been definitely established. In connection with a comparative study of kerosene and froth flotation processes, a modification of the displacement method' was developed in which air escaping from the cell surface is measured with a wet-test meter. The arrangement shown in Fig. 1 is satisfactory for use with a number of cells and is not critical, except that care must be taken to use connections and tubing large enough to avoid excessive back pressures. Attempts to use smaller tubing resulted in back pressures that caused displacement of the liquid level in the receiver, so that some air was lost around the sides, an occurrence readily visible when measurements were taken with only water passing through the cell. With the arrangement shown, the manometer indicated an average reading of about ½ -in. water pressure. No loss of air was evident.

The Louvicourt Mine is located 600 km north of Montreal in the province of Quebec, Canada. The owners are Aur Resources Inc (30 per cent), mine operator, Novicourt Inc (45 per cent) and Teck Corporation (25 per cent). It is an underground mechanised operation with a total work of 290 employees. Since 1994, the mine production is 11 120 456 tonnes at 3.60 per cent Cu, 1.51 per cent Zn, 26.07 g/mt Ag and 0.96 g/mt Au. At a rate of 4300 tonnes per day 365 days per year. Louvicourt Mine is a copper operation since 80 per cent of our revenue is from copper. The mining method is transverse blasthole stoping, mining primary and secondary stopes. The stope dimension is 15 m wide by 30 m high and 10 m to 80 m long for primary stopes. The secondary stopes are limited at 25 m long. Close to 100 000 metres of production drilling per year is required for 115 mm and 165 mm diameter holes. Backfilling is done with pastefill from the start of the operation in 1994. The binder ratio is 4.5 per cent in primary and two per cent in secondary stopes (80 per cent slag and 20 per cent cement). Development requirement to maintain production was 5000 m from 1996, 1997, 1998, 4200 in year 1999, 3200 m in year 2000 and an average of 2500 m in 2001 and 2002. Typical 6.0 m + 4.3 m, 4.9 m + 4.6 m and 4.5 m + 4.6 m headings. In addition more than 1500 metres of development will be excavated in/under paste backfill before 2004. A total of 60 mobile units are required among which for lateral development (three two boom electric hydraulic jumbos û AC Boomer 322, four electric hydraulic roofbolters û Maclean MEM-928 and AC Boltec PL350 and two anfo loader truck û Dux) and for production (four ITH drills û MTI, one electric hydraulic longhole drill û AC Simba H1357, eight LHD û AC-Wagner ST8-B, 1 LHD ST-1000 and two haulage 30 tons trucks û Dux. The 1 January 2002 reserves are 4.1 M tonnes grading 3.1 per cent Cu and 1.9 per cent Zn at an NSR (Net Smelter Revenue) of $US 53. The operating mining costs were at an average of $US 23 from 1996 to year 2000 and $US 25 in 2001. The operating costs ranged from a low of $US 0.41 per pound of copper in 1999 to a high of $US 0.49 per pound of copper in 1998.

"Gas management has always been a major concern for the ventilation officer of any gassy mine. With an increase of mining depth and gas content, there is a great demand for the development of in-seam drilling sites where boreholes can be drilled for the pre-drainage of gas prior to longwall operation. The ventilation and gas management in the drilling site therefore becomes a critical component of mine safety. In this study, advanced computational fluid dynamics technology was adopted to investigate the aerodynamics of gas emitting from the drilling site and boreholes during normal drilling and, in the case of a sudden gas inrush, from the borehole. In addition, the impact of different ventilation controls on gas removal in the drilling site was investigated. Modelling results indicate that gas accumulation zones could be formed if the ventilation system fails to deliver sufficient airflow to the drill site, especially when a sudden gas inrush from a borehole occurs. The configurations of brattice, layout of ventilation tubes and the gas emission rate all have a significant effect on the gas distribution. Due to variations in site-specific conditions, it would be desirable to conduct modelling studies to assess the effects and efficiencies of a ventilation design for the varying environment on-site before carrying out drilling practice. "Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) is a newly developed method for the sintering of metal and ceramic powders, and completes their densification at low temperature and in short period. The SiC powder was synthesized from diatomite and graphite or carbon black by heating at 1 450°C for 1 hr in an argon atmosphere. The synthesized SiC powder was heated at 1500-1800°C, 50 MPa for 15-18 min by SPS. The relative density of sintered SiC body increased with the rise in the temperature. The oxidation of the surface of the SiC particle and impurities in SiC from diatomite greatly influenced the sintering promotion of SPS.IntroductionThe SiC has high hardness because of the covalent bonding, and is also excellent in thermal and chemical stability. However, it is difficult to obtain a dense SiC sintered body by the combustion heating-method. Therefore, the dense SiC bodies have been made by the use of additives and I or the hot pressing (HP) method.In this study, the SiC powder was synthesized by using diatomite of natural products and graphite, and carbon black of reagent as raw materials, and the relationship between the properties of SiC powders prepared at various synthetic conditions and the density of sintered body by SPS was examined."

The capabilities of the analog computer, the Mine Ventilation Simulator, installed at WHA's Safety and Health Technology Center in Denver, Colorado, are discussed. General opera- ting procedures are described showing how a mine model is produced, and how the model can subsequently be modified to produce a solution to a mine ventilation problem. A sample problem is included to illustrate the technique. The important role the Mine Ventilation Simulator plays in ventilation training is discussed, including experiences with the education of students at the Colorado School of Mines. This paper includes a summary of some of the advantages and disadvantages of the analog technique and suggests some design criteria for application to future development of analog computers, based on experience gained with the Mine Ventilation Simulator.

Two commonly estimated fractal dimensions, called b and D values, represent statistical characteristics in the distribution of magnitude sizes (b) and spatial hypocenter locations (D) of microseismic events, respectively. We postulate that the values of b and D are related to specific stress regimes. Through different case studies of fluid injection into an oil/gas reservoir or geothermal field, we infer that the measured temporal variation in fractal dimension b is most likely due to significant changes in the local stress regime. The fracture dimension D indicates the spatial clustering of events. The distribution of these events can vary with time because of stress perturbations that (re)activate fractures whose direction favours their movement under a specific stress regime. Thus a combined statistical study of these two dimensions can help infer the variations of local stresses in a reservoir.

The history of the Australian coal industry is almost as old as the history of Australia after new settlement. The first cargo of coal was exported from Newcastle to India in 1799. Although coal has been mined in Australia for almost two centuries, there are indications that the first coal was processed in 1877 in the New-castle area, nearly a half-century after the first coal processing in Europe. Processing on any significant scale began only in 1944 at the Newcastle Steel Works. In Queensland, however, coal processing did not begin until the second quarter of this century. The well-known dramatic growth of mining and processing of Australian coal since the mid-sixties has primarily been due to the expansion of the export market in Japan and other Asian and European countries. Black coal occurs in most of the major sedimentary basins in Australia. The better known deposits of commercial importance are in Sydney, Bowen, Oakland and Gailiee Basins (Figure 1). Apart from Collie Basin in Western Australia, other coal deposits of the Arckinga Basin in South Australia, the Bonaparte Basin in Northern Territory and Tasmania Basin, Tasmania, are basically unexploited. Sydney Basin of New South Wales and Bowen Basin of Queensland remain the major producers of black coal in Australia.

Flotation separation and recovery of value minerals from ores containing fibrous silicate minerals are known to be quite challenging. Earlier studies have established that the metallurgical challenges (poor selectivity and recovery, high energy consumption, etc.) arise from the impact of the fibrous minerals (with high aspect ratio) on pulp rheology, which was found be rather complex. The complex rheological behavior of ore suspensions containing particles with high aspect ratio and its influence on flotation outcome are investigated in this study. Flotation tests and rheological measurements were carried out with both ores (containing fibrous minerals) and a model system comprising nylon fibers (chemically inert) added to a copper ore that had no fibrous mineral. These studies allowed the determination of contributions of physical properties of the fiber to pulp rheological behavior. Optical microscopy images of the fiber pulp indicated that the fibers entangled to form two levels of microstructures: two-dimensional (2D) aggregates under semi-dilute (< 20% solids) conditions and three-dimensional (3D) microstructures at concentrations > 30% solids. The yield stress (σ) values determined for the fiber pulp were logarithmically related to the volume fraction of the 2D/3D structures. The relationships developed here for different ARs showed that the yield stress of a flotation pulp changes with respect to shape, size, and the concentrations of the microstructures. Implications to the effects of such entangle networks on selectivity of flotation separation are discussed.

The US Bureau of Mines has conducted investigations on extracting phosphate values from wastes generated during the mining and beneficiation of phosphate matrix. These wastes may contain up to one third of the phosphate originally present in untreated ore. Samples of wastes were air-dried and leached using 93% sulfuric acid in the presence of methanol. Evidence for the formation of a calcium sulfate hemihydrate coating that hinders complete dissolution of phosphate is presented. Solid-liquid separations were enhanced when flocculation was effected using poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) in conjunction with hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) or hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC). A conceptual flowsheet for a proposed process using an acid-alcohol leaching technique is presented.

On October 1, 1993 the regulations for assessing and cleaning up contaminated soil and groundwater in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts were revised. These new regulations, known as the Massachusetts Contingency Plan (MCP) 310 CMR 40.0000, were developed to keep routine releases out of the regulatory system and rely on private parties to handle most releases without Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) oversight. An integral part of the new MCP is the Licensed Site Professional (LSP). An LSP is required to handle activities and render opinions once a site enters the MCP. These regulations must be adhered to where ever a release has occurred, including construction sites. A brief overview of the new MCP is given below; see attached MCP Flowchart for graphical summary. Entering the MCP Process A release of oil or hazardous material (OHM) to the soil or groundwater above applicable reportable quantities (RQ&apos;s) or reportable concentrations (RC&apos;s) will require notification to the DEP and compliance with applicable provisions of the MCP. RQ&apos;s and RC&apos;s are listed in the MCP (310 CMR 40.1600) for most compounds that are typically encountered. For each compound there are two RC&apos;s for soil (S-1 and S-2) and two for groundwater (GW-1 and GW-2). The S-1 and GW-1 RC&apos;s apply to sites that are environmentally more sensitive, as a result they are lower than the S-2 and GW-2 RC&apos;s.

The ventilation of metal mines is becoming more of a fundamental requirement than it was 10 or even 5 years ago. There are many reasons for this, and in general they are based on economy or efficiency rather than health or safety, yet the latter enters into the picture in at least some instances. One Montana metal mine which had installed mine fans and a general ventilating system shut down the fan when there was a period of cessation of work; within a few weeks it was found that the underground timbers were becoming so covered with fungus that the fans were put into operation and thereafter continued in operation whether the mine was worked or not. The fungus soon disappeared and the cost of operating the fans was held to be far less than would be the numerous losses from timber decay which quickly started when cessation of air flow was encountered. A large iron ore mine in Michigan had much difficulty in holding men in a slicing region due to foul air under certain surface conditions as to direction of wind. Upon the placing of a moderate sized fan on the surface with some doors, stoppings and regulators underground, not only was the bad air condition removed but there was found to be a decided increase of tonnage per man per shift and timber decay was retarded to a very considerable extent. This particular mining company was rather inclined to be angry when I called attention to some of the what I considered very bad working conditions underground, and the mine superintendent for about a year and a half was on anything but friendly terms with me. Later on when the effect of the placing of the fan was found (the fan had been placed over his protest), that, man came through very nicely with a letter and congratulated me on the recommendation made and congratulated himself and the company on the conditions obtained after the installation of the fan.
