Wyoming County had for many years supplied large quantities of coking coals to coke plants throughout the eastern United States and Canada. Up to the present most of the coal has been produced from relatively few beds, but in the future the coal will be produced from beds not previously mined in quantity. This trend is shown in the entire Winding Gulf field, of which Wyoming County is a part. This publication is one of a series of Bureau of mines reports appraising the Nation's coking coal, which y be used to determine the practicability of upgrading marginal deposits to metallurgical standards. This investigation of the preparation characteristics of Wyoming County coals is the third of the series undertaken in West Virginia.

The subject of my paper is one which, I am certain, has exercised the mind of every man on whom depends the safe and economical conduct of mining operations; particularly in this district where the enormous size of the ore body has necessitated the mine workings assuming a scale that was hitherto unknown in the history of Australian mining. I, therefore, approach the subject with the feeling that I am displaying considerable t.emerity, knowing as I do that the subject has engaged the earnest attention and thought of everybody immediately concerned in the extraction of the ore of this district, and particularly of the Broken Hill lode.I think I shall not be contradicted in asserting that a very large proportion of eur accidents are distinctly traiceable to inexperience on the part of the miner, and records at the mines and verdicts of coroners' juries in many instances uphold this assertion by showing that the accident under notice was the direct result of lack of knowledge of the conditions of the work, or, at any rate, of an error of judgment hardly conceivable in the experienced miner. That this assertion is correct may also be proved by visiting any of the mines of the district.To the experienced eye it will be evident at once that a very large number are not in way skilful in the use of their tools and, therefore, lack the experience which of necessity must be coincident with the acquirement of skill. The sign of the surface charge of selected potassium soluble salt minerals namely KClO4 , K2SO4 , KNO3, and KCl was determined from nonequilibrium electrophoresis measurements and found to be negative for each of the salt. Dodecylamine flotation of these salts revealed that the concentration of amine required for flotation increases in the order KClO4< K2SO4< KNO3<KCl. Precipitationof the amine collector colloid was not required for flotation of the oxyanion salts and in this case it appears that adsorption of the dodecylamine cation is sufficient to create the hydrophobic surface state. The order for flotation is explained in terms of surface hydration of these respective potassium salts based on contact angle measurements and FT Raman spectroscopic characterization of water structure.

Mill log analyses and complementary hot deformation studies were carried out on the as-cast structure and on a hot rolled structure of the same low carbon steel (SAE 1006) that had been processed according to the direct or hot charge route in a compact strip plant. The main softening mechanisms during hot rolling were found to be complete dynamic recrystallization during each pass above about 1000°C for the as-cast structure with an austenite grain size of 277µm and, secondly, incomplete static recrystallization after each pass with a finer austenite grain size of about 26 µm and tested below 1000°C. A two-stage hot working mechanism has also been found by others on a similar steel also processed by the hot charge route and this may appear to be a characteristic of this type of material. Constitutive constants determined from hot working studies were combined with other constants from the literature and incorporated into a grain size development model that correctly predicts the final ferrite grain size in the hot rolled strip steel. The predicted incomplete static recrystallization during the last three finishing passes in the plant appears to result in some retained strain in the hot rolled austenite as it transforms to ferrite on the run-out table. Analyses with the model predict relatively little sensitivity of the final ferrite grain size to process and product variables such as temperature and strain per pass for the last three passes and also the starting austenite grain size in the slab. In this paper, some of the constraints to applying bioremediation to the decontamination of polluted soils are introduced. Particularly, attention has been given to those associated with the geology of the polluted site. Areas which require further research have been addressed and indicate that geologists will play a key role, alongside microbial ecologists and engineers, in designing and implementing bioremediation strategies.

Changes in machinery operating and design parameters often result in unexpected vibrations or changes in the vibration patterns. Vibration in a system is an undesirable element that can cause machinery distress. Potential damage can be prevented by identifying the vibration level that is due to the changed operational parameters. This is necessary for the safe and reliable operation of plant equipment. This paper presents a documented study on vibration events that resulted from alterations in operating and design parameters in a mine ventilation fan and analyzes the causes by defining the sequence of events that led to its performance deficiency. This paper is based on experimental effort to study the vibration behavior of a ventilation fan under varying operating conditions.

The Bureau of Mines examined the Bear Canyon RARE II area in 1982. The area has no identified mineral deposits. The few claims that were located in the study area are devoid of any workings. No concentrations of economic minerals were found in the samples taken. There are no mineral, geothermal, or oil and gas leases in the area; the nearest oil well is 10 mi (16 km) east. The nearest mining operation was the Ruby Gold Placer worked in 1914, 7 mi (11 km) southeast (Hart, 1966, p. 45); the Pliocene Paso Robles Formation which contained the gold does not extend into the area. SETTING The Bear Canyon RARE II area covers 19.7 sq mi (51 sq km) or 12,600 acres (1500 ha) in west-central California. It lies in the Santa Lucia Range 10 mi (16 km) southwest of King City and adjoins the southeast side of the Ventana Wilderness. It is 10 mi (16 km) from the Pacific Ocean. Primary access is by the San Antonio River road on the Hunter Liggett Military Reservation, which parallels the area&apos;s southern border. Further access to the area&apos;s interior is by jeep and foot trails.

A fifth successive record in fuel efficiency was established by the petroleum-refining industry in 1937, when the average heat requirement per barrel of crude oil run to stills was 554,000 B. t. u. compared with 597,000 B. t. u. in 1936. These amounts represent roughly the heat obtainable from a tenth of a barrel of fuel oil (see fig. 1). Innumerable factors can influence heat consumption at refineries, but only a few are important enough to be subject to statistical measurement. Foremost of these is the ratio of runs to capacity, it being generally recognized that because the fuel demands for other than stills are comparatively inelastic, total heat requirements do not increase in direct proportion to crude runs. Thus, in 1937, crude runs of 1,183,440,000 barrels were 11 percent higher than in 1930; the average operating ratio was 83 percent compared with 79 percent in 1936; but the total heat requirement increased only 4 percent, or from 638,149 billion B. t. u. in 1936 to 663,966 billion B. t. u. in 1937.

Copper production in the. United States in 1972 amounted to 1,658,000 tons according to the USBM. This figure is up over 1971 but falls below 1970 production of 1,719,101 tons. This report is essentially about the status of copper mining operations in the U.S. and is an update and expansion of the report "Southwest Copper-A Position Survey" published in [A=], October 1965. At that time, the trend was toward using larger equipment to mine lower grade ore and toward the expansion of dump leaching practice. That trend continues today but, it is overlain by intensive activity to comply with existing environ¬mental legislation and uncertainty over proposed revisions of venerable laws governing mining. In the U.S. today there is, practically speaking, no excess smelting capacity so that expansion of copper production through the startup of new mines is inhibited. Owners of a large undeveloped orebody would have to decide before going into production whether to sell the concentrates offshore, which has many problems, whether to try one of several unproved chemical processes for producing refined metal from concentrates or embarking on the construction of a traditional pyrometallurgical plant in the face of considerable uncertainty over the pollution standards that eventually must be met. The situation is such that not only is the present rate of U.S. copper production threatened but the ability to meet projected increased demand in the years ahead may have been severely retarded.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski County, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigations beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the eighth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is no followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project, except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations at those holes show on figure 13 in volume I. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs at the drill holes. Many at the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and gra.de. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each halt township is given with the discussion covering that area.

"Brenda Mines Limited is a low grade open pit mining and milling operation located near Peachland, British Columbia. The mill was brought into production in late 1969 at a rated capacity of 24,000 tons per day. Tt currently treats an average of 30,000 tons per day of an ore that has an average grade of 0.130% copper and 0.030% molybdenum.Description of Crushing and Grinding CircuitsRun of mine ore is delivered to a primary gyratory crusher. The minus seven inch product is separated into plus and minus one inch fractions on two parallel vibrating screens. The fine product is conveyed directly to the mill fine ore bins, while the coarse fraction is sent to a 45,000 ton stockpile.Material from the stockpile is fed to two standard cone crushers which operate in an open circuit with five secondary vibrating screens. The minus five-eighth inch product from these screens is conveyed to the mill fine ore bins while the coarse fraction is fed to four shorthead cone crushers. These crushers operate in closed circuit with the screens."

Within the last year, the Nation has been shocked by two major tunneling disasters. Almost exactly a year ago 17 men died in the San Fernando Tunnel in an explosion attributed to gas. A few months later another 21 men died in an explosion laid to the same cause at Port Huron, Michigan. The analysis of the causes of these accidents is still continuing. While it appears that they differ substantially from each other in their specifics, they share the common trait that, like most industrial accidents, they might well have been prevented. Gas explosions in tunneling are neither new nor particularly unusual. Forty years ago, Assistant Director Jarrett was hired as a safety engineer on the Hetch Hetchy Aqueduct in California after an explosion that killed 12 men. Prior to 1946, in California alone, the Bureau of Mines had recorded 27 gas explosions incidental to hard rock mining and tunneling. The purpose of this paper is to review the status of the principal regulations affecting tunneling and to indicate some ways in which safer and more healthful conditions can be obtained. The Bureau of Mines was established by an Act of Congress of May 16, 1910. Since that time the Bureau has been making investigations and compiling and publishing health and safety data relating to mining and to tunneling. If any benefit is to come from an anaylsis of tunneling accidents, it must be the knowledge needed to prevent their repetition. The Bureau of Mines has also had informal discussions with the Department of Labor regarding the possibility of the Bureau&apos;s assuming that agency&apos;s responsibility for tunnel inspections.

As part of the work of serving as Chairman of Subcommittee 3, Health and Industrial Requirements, of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers&apos; Committee on Air-Pollution Controls, the author assembled the following information on accepted maximum permissible concentrations of air pollutants from the standpoints of health, damage to vegetation, damage to property, and requirements of industrial processes. A search in technical literature was made followed by direct inquiry to all State governments as to their regulations. The subcommittee membership - G. D. In the recent past there have been dramatic advancements in the development of remote sensing platforms (satellite, aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles – UAVs) as well as sensor systems (multispectral, hyperspectral, thermal, light detection and ranging (LiDAR) and radar). However, selection of the appropriate remote sensing technique for a mining application is complex and requires scrutiny on multiple scales including spatial, temporal and imaging capabilities. Deposits of manganese oxides and silicates in the Tamworth area were re-examined. The major deposit at Danglemah consists chiefly of rhodonite and the rare silicate tephroite. It is considered that the manganese was deposited with the original sediments, the silicates being formed later during the intense folding and low-grade metamorphism of the enclosing rocks.INTRODUCTIONMany small deposits of manganese oxides and silicates occur along a belt of eastern New South Wales and Queensland.Some fifty occurrences, most of which have been subject to mining activity, were described by Lloyd (1943) and some of this information was summarized by Knight (1947). The ores have been mined on a small scale since 1884. Small supplies of battery grade ore were won from a number of deposits, while larger quantities of metallurgical grade were sold to the steel industry. Maximum production was in 1918, when 6,500 tons were mined.The siliceous nature of many of the ores and their occurrence in the neighbourhood of granite batholiths led earlier investigators to consider the deposits to be of hydrothermal origin, associated with the granite intrusions. The present work questions this viewpoint.In this investigation, three of the chief deposits in the Tamworth area were seen. These were at Danglemah, which is being mined at present, and Mount Jasper and Manganese Mountain, which were mined in the past. The mining industry occasionally blasts near pressurized transmission pipelines and has requested guidance of safe vibration levels and setback distances. the Bureau of Mines and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources cooperated with AMAX Coal Company on a study of coal mine overburden blasting. Five buried and pressurized 250-ft pipeline sections were specifically installed on the Minnehaha Mine highwall near Sullivan, IN for testing to failure. Four welded steel pipes ranging from 6- to 20- in diameter and one 8- PVC water supply pipe were monitored for vibration, strain, and internal pressure for a period of 6 months while production blasting advanced up to the pipeline field. In contrast to previous studies of small-scale blasting representing construction activities, these tests involved overburden blasts of up to 2100 lb per delay in 12-l/4-in diameter holes.

The use of micropiles is increasing for new construction and to retrofit distressed foundations in expansive soils. Typical micropiles in expansive soils have a lower section where the micropile grout is embedded in direct contact with the soil, and an upper section that is cased with rigid PVC pipe or other material to reduce the friction between the micropile and the surrounding expansive soil. In the upper cased section, the micropile grout is in direct contact with the inside of the casing. During construction, grout can flow upward into the annular space between the soil and the outside of the casing as the grout is tremied into the micropile. Thus, various interfaces may exist in a typical micropile, including soil-to-grout, grout-to-PVC, and soil-to-PVC. As the surrounding soil heaves, shear stresses are mobilized along the interfaces. The frictional characteristics of the interfaces are design variables that must be evaluated. For this study, an experimental program was conducted to evaluate the shear strength of the three interfaces listed above. Conventional direct shear testing was performed at a commercial testing laboratory. In addition, specialized testing was performed at Colorado State University (CSU). For the CSU testing, an interface testing protocol was designed using a modified triaxial cell to allow evaluation of the interface characteristics between rigid PVC and cylindrical specimens of grout or clay soil. It is shown that the shear strength of the soil-to-PVC and grout-to-PVC interfaces are similar, both of which are significantly lower than the shear strength of the soil-to-grout interface. This indicates that the use of a PVC casing in the upper portion of a micropile has a positive effect in reducing friction and the shear stresses resulting from expansive soil.

RECENT interest in germanium centers around its use as a semi-conductor of electricity in electronic devices. It is generally believed that germanium transistors, diodes, triodes, photocells, and rectifiers will largely replace the present-day vacuum tubes. The germanium electronic devices are much smaller, lighter, and more resistant to shock, and they require only a small fraction of current required for conventional devices. Hence only a small amount of heat is given off by the equipment. This development will require many times the quantity of germanium now being produced, which in 1948 was approximately 1000 lb1 and was obtained almost entirely from zinc ores in Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma. "El trabajo refiere algunos aspectos del depósito de estaño en el yacimiento de Condiriquiña (Puno), como en zonas de Apurimac, Lima, Pasco, Ancash, Cajamarca del Perú. Se conoce que los principales depósitos de estaño provienen de los ramales cordilleranos de Bolivia, abarcando una serie de yacimientos. En vista de una posterior demanda del producto, fue necesario que el Perú inicie una exploración de este metal en territorios adyacentes a Bolivia. Sin embargo, las exploraciones no se concretaron más que a las inmrediaciones del lago Titicaca. Posteriormente se descubrió minerales de estaño en diversas partes de nuestro territorio,aunque que ningún depósito explorado tenga un resultado de valor económico-industrial considerable. El aspecto geoquímico del estaño no tiene relaciones con el fierro, cromo, silicio, careciendo de estaño en los depósitos líquidos magmáticos y en las rocas ígneas de naturaleza básica. Durante los procesos metalogenéticos el estaño se concentra y constituye un elemento característico de la cristalización residual; presentándose tanto en el alcance neumatolítico ácidocomo en el hidrotermal. En consecuencia, los depósitos de estaño son de origen neumatólítico, cuyas masas y filones de catiserita están asociados con un batolito de granito, de edad oligocénico. Así, las rocas encajonantes consisten en pizarras y cuarcitas de Ordovicito, se transforman en rocas greisen o ígneas. Finalmente, los depósitos estanníferos se clasifican según sus alcances genéticos en depósitos supergenos e hipogenos, los cuales se dividen en depósitos pegmatítico, neumalotílicos, de transición neumatolíticos-hidrotermales y los depósitos hidrotermales."

During the last decades, it has become common practice in the Nordic countries to use dry deep mixing in soft clays with lime and cement in for example deep excavation pits in soft clay, or as a reinforcement of the passive zone within sheet pile walls. The shear strength of stabilised soils is affected by the stress conditions during curing and shearing. However, this is normally not taken into consideration. As the strength of the stabilised clay is stress dependent, excavation of the overlying soil will lead to a reduction of the confining stresses in the underlying stabilised soils which means that the shear strength will also be reduced. Under embankments on the other hand, the effect is reversed as the shear strength will be increased. In this study, laboratory tests have been performed on stabilised soils cured and tested under different stress conditions to quantify the stress effects in a Norwegian sensitive clay. In addition, direct simple shear tests on samples from in situ columns have been made with varying normal stresses. Results are presented showing an increase of shear strength of the stabilised soil with increased curing stresses, and an even higher increase with increased confining stress during shearing. The results are compared to field measurements along with a discussion of practical application of the findings.
