As low-temperature heat-capacity and entropy data were available for only one sesquisulfide (cerium sesquisulfide), it appeared desirable to augment the information for this class of compounds by measuring the sulfides of antimony and indium. In addition a pressing need existed for data on indium sulfide to supplement vaporization studies in progress in the Department of Mineral Technology, University of California. This Bureau of Mines paper reports low-temperature heat-capacity measurements and entropy evaluations at 298.15° R. of antimony sesquisulfide of stoiehiometric composition (Sb2S3) and of indium sesquisulfide which was somewhat deficient in sulfur (In2S2.93). The data for the latter substance were adjusted to correspond to the stoichiome tric composition (In2S3 ) . Indium sesquisulfide has a lower entropy at 298.15' K, than either antimony sesquisulfide or cerium sesquisulfide, in line with the higher atomic density of the indium compound.

Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) is owned and jointly managed by Ashanti Goldfields Company (Ghana) and Anglogold (South Africa). The mine is currently one of the largest gold producing open pit operations in Africa producing 620 000 ounces of gold and mining in excess of 70 000 000 tonnes of material per annum. The mine currently has 2000 full time employeeÆs and a mine life in excess of 12 years. Geita Gold Mine is comprised of 11 different gold deposits situated in the Lake Victoria Goldfields of North Western Tanzania (Figure 1). The gold deposits are primarily associated with banded ironstone formations within an Archaean greenstone belt. Current global resources, including Inferred, stand at 129.5 million tonnes grading 3.91 g/t (16.2 M oz). Open pit reserves total 70.4 million tonnes grading 4.16 g/t (9.4 M oz). The majority of the gold resource is hosted by the three deposits (Nyankanga, Lone Cone and Geita Hill) within the æGeita TrendÆ a large and continuous (>4 km long) mineralised zone (Adofo, 2002). Geita Gold Mine commenced operations in June 2000, as the second large-scale open pit gold mine in Tanzania. The new workforce of 800 people had no previous experience in open pit gold mining. Since the start of the operation, Geita Gold MineÆs management ambition was to become a world leader in the application of best practice in all technical disciplines and in operational success. Staff development and training was identified as one of the major components in the company achieving its aim. Geita Gold MineÆs management has committed the necessary training staff, resources and the commitment of over $US 1 M a year to staff training and development programs for 2003 and 2004. The process and management of Geita Gold MineÆs mining geology staff training and development program is presented in this paper.

INTRODUCTION The Department of Energy is cooperating with Snowmass Coal Company near Carbondale, Colorado to introduce the longwall mining method in moderate to steeply pitching coal seams in the United States. This venture is part of a coal mining research program directed toward development, trial, and analysis of mining technique8 to improve production and recovery in the more difficult mining conditions such as thick, multiple, and steeply pitchly seams found in the Western U.S. The project at Snowmass is the first attempt in the United States to operate a longwall in a steep coal seam. Plans are to mine three adjacent, successively downslope panels in the eight foot thick seam which varies in pitch from 27 to 33 degrees. During this work, researchers and mine engineers are expected to obtain answers to many engineering questions relative to panel design and development, selection of face equipment and beet operating techniques and procedures. They are also committed to obtaining hard data on costs, recovery, production, safety, and behavior of underground mine structure as the three panels are mined. This information is essential to future mine engineering and profitable mining of pitching Western coal reserves. Development of the first trial panel was begun in 1979 and completed in June 1981. The longwall mining equipment was then installed in the starting room and retreat mining begun on August 11, 1981. Project duration is expected to be about five years during which over tm million tons of coal will be produced. TRAINING The longwall mining method is new to Snowmass. For years the mine produced coal by room and pillar methods using conventional techniques to mine upslope rooms and Alpine F6A miners to cut entries and rooms on strike. Miners were experienced in room and - pillar mining from other mines. News of the longwall demonstration was received enthusiastically by Snowmass miners. Employee interest in the project was 100%. However, there was minimal longwall experience on site. In fact, most of the work force had not even seen a longwall. Mine and company management were well aware of the immediate need to develop trained longwall face mining crews and maintenance people qualified to work on longwall equipment and also expertise in longwall planning, equipment selection, power distribution design, ventilation requirements and panel development. The first approach to answer this huge deficiency in longwall mining experience was obviously training. Hence a training program directed toward those mining specifics most urgent to the beginning mining phases was initiated in mid-1980. Classroom lectures and hands on training, using instructors from equipment suppliers and available company longwall expertise, was conducted in longwall subjects to include face mining procedures, panel development, operation of equipment, equipment assembly and maintenance, electrical circuitry and controls, ventilation, move of longwall equipment, and safety procedures. At the same time, responsible engineers and foremen were sent on a tour of European pitching longwalls to see first hand how other mines working under similar seam conditions conducted their operations. Development techniques, types of equipment, methods for transport of men and materials, and ground control techniques were discussed with engineers, foremen and officials at each mine. This look at European longwall mining operations gave Snowmass good insight into the unique problems associated with longwall mining on 30' pitch. Mining considerations such as face conveyor/ support system slippage downslope, panel development, maintenance, safety considerations, manpower requirements, and haulage methods were covered with European experts

IN a brief summary of the many occurrences of fluorspar in our western states, it is not possible to go into detail in regard to the geology, mining and milling methods, and reserves about individual deposits. Rather a broad review is made of the occurrences and an analysis of how the western deposits may fit into our future domestic economy is presented. GENERAL STATEMENT ON FLUORSPAR SITUATION Fluorspar has been used for years as a flux in the manufacture of basic open-hearth steel, in foundry cupolas for melting pig iron, in the manufacture of opalescent glass and in the preparation of hydrofluoric acid. In 1880 the annual production of fluorspar in the United States was around 4000 tons per year. By 1900 it was up to 21,656 tons and between 1902 and 1908 it averaged about 40,000 tons annually. Prices were then so low, by present standards, that it seems impossible to believe now that mining could have been performed profitably at the price levels then prevailing. In 1890 fluorspar sold at the mines for $6.70 per ton, in I901 for $5.81, in 1916 for $5.92. When the United States entered World War I, fluorspar production and price skyrocketed; the production reached 263,817 tons in 1918, with prices above $20.00 per ton, and prices were even higher in 1919 and 1920. After 1920, the domestic production fell from the 1918 level to about 125,000 tons annually and the average price dropped back to about $I8.00 per ton. By 1935 the average price had fallen to $15.00, but in 194o with a rising demand the average price of all grades had gone back up to $20.31. Today it is 75 per cent higher than in 1940 and presumably the price of acid grade at least would be even higher if it were not for price ceilings. The first subsequent year that the domestic production exceeded that of 1918 was 1941, and the 1944 production is expected to exceed 400,000 tons, 'or over one and a half times that of 1918. In five-year periods, average production and imports were as are shown in Table I. [ ] Many people concerned with the consumption of fluorspar believe that the postwar period ahead will show a repetition of price trends of the last such period. They believe that imports will be- again an important factor in the available supply and the price will fall back gradually toward the prewar level. Use of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to solve informational needs in isolated and restricted underground mining environments will be reviewed, giving specifications of some past and currently available systems. The advantages and disadvantages of using various frequencies, system configurations, and specific components, including their construction standards and capability, will be discussed. The remaining challenges to more widespread use of RFID systems for personnel and vehicle tracking will be identified, and recommendations concerning operating environment capabilities will be detailed. Finally, the ultimate requirements for maintaining system integrity during and following a coal mine emergency will be discussed.

"Great effort has been expended for more than 40 years to improve the workplace safety and health of surface and underground miners across the United States. When looking at the past decade, withstanding the 2010, Upper Big Branch (UBB) disaster that took the lives of 29 miners, this effort has resulted in a generally decreasing trend from 57 fatalities (22 coal; 35 metal/non-metal) in 2005, to 45 (16 coal; 29 m/ nm) in 2014. Through August of this year, there have been 23 mining-related deaths (eight coal; 15 m/nm). These results reflect continued diligence and perseverance on the part of miners that stay true to our legacy; and demonstrate significant investments from mine-site leadership, mining corporations, and state and federal regulators. However, over the past five years there have been an average of 32 fatalities per year, with a low of 36 (2011 and 2012) to a high of 45 (2014). If we know that there will be somewhere between 30 and 50 mining related deaths next year, which of us will volunteer to be counted as one of the numbered? Clearly, we all agree that one fatality is too many; and as evidenced by changes following UBB, deaths in any sector are deaths reflective of all mining across all sectors.The impact of each miner death touches us all. Miner’s deaths are felt deeply by family and friends, most significantly the children; their communities in which they served, supported, and worshiped; and by society that has lost a hardworking, dependable contributor. Further, to take a slightly cynical, but realistic view, miner fatality events impact the financial vitality of mining and contracting companies and broadly diminish investor confidence. Just as important, these events significantly impact our communities and result in negative public perceptions, which ultimately drive regulatory policy and related compliance pressures. This resulting pressure forces operations to broadly address safety and health gaps in very specific ways (i.e., see U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations regarding lids for trash cans) minimizing a mine site’s opportunities for operational flexibility. To break this cycle that is the operational reality, mining companies are focusing tremendous efforts on fatality prevention and specifically on dedicated investment to prevent multiple fatality events."

An orientation survey was conducted over a known disseminated copper deposit and a Au-Cu vein deposit and employed geological, geophysical, and geochemical methods. Geochemical techniques proved the most effective and economical means of locating and defining areas underlain by these types of mineralization. Six additional, widely separated occurrences were also investigated and mineralization was confirmed by determination of cold-extractable copper in stream sediments. The length of anomalous drainage varies from several to 16 km and depends on the type and tenor of mineralization. Despite generally marked relief and extreme physical and chemical weathering, cold-extractable copper anomalies in soils appear to reflect closely variations in the ore mineral content of immediately underlying rocks. Threshold values vary with local geological conditions and type and grade of mineralization. Significant thresholds in stream sediments are about 65 ppm and 10 ppm for cold-extractable copper in disseminated and vein copper occurrences respectively. Similar differences are encountered in soils. This necessitates the use of a scale of threshold values at progressive stages in each exploration program. Dis-seminated copper occurrences are presently the major source of mineral production m the Philippines. Much potentially productive ground remains to be investigated and applied geochemistry appears to offer the best available approach. The Institute of Applied Geology (I.A.G.), a joint project sponsored by the University of the Philippines, the Philippine Bureau of Mines and the United Nations Development Program (Special Fund) undertook during 1965-66 a number of field projects in Northern Luzon Island (Fig. 1). These field operations were of a two-fold nature and involved both orientation and exploration. During approximately six weeks, an orientation survey, involving geological mapping, geophysical surveying and geochemical prospecting, was conducted over a partly developed, disseminated copper deposit at Santo Nino (Fig. 1). This study demonstrated the economic and technical feasibility of geochemical ptospecting, relative to the other methods tested, for the location and delineation of a typical disseminated copper occurrence characteristic of those that represent the major source of metal in the Philippines.' Geochemical techniques, similar to those tested at Santo Nino, were then applied in a second orientation study of a vein occurrence at Suyoc (Fig. 1). The results of these two orientation studies suggest that, in reconnaissance work in this region, stream sediment analyses, combined with the determination of pH in the same streams, can be used to indicate areas underlain by rock containing anomalous concentrations of copper, whether it occurs in the large tonnage, low grade, disseminated deposits or in the comparatively small tonnage, higher grade, gold vein occurrences. Furthermore, the orientation surveys demonstrate that soil sampling and analysis serve effectively to outline more closely the mineralized zones within the generally anomalous areas identified from the stream reconnaissance. "PURPOSEThe purpose of this presentation to the Canadian Mineral Processors is to review gold heap leaching systems currently in use and discuss their applicability to Canadian ores. The author's experience with the development and operation of heap leaching spans the past four years at. Pinson, and visits to many ether heap leaches in the western United States.INTRODUCTIONBy way of introduction to the heap leaching system, I will describe in slight detail the method used at Pinson Mining in northern Nevada. This will be followed by a discussion of optional methods in use at other operations visited.The Pinson orebody is a finely disseminated, well-oxidized hydrothermal deposit. Gold particles are finer than 20- microns. The orezone hostrocks are metamorphosed and silici¬fied limestone and shale. Sulfides and carbonaceous materials are negligible.The Pinson open-pit mine has operated since June 1980. It produces 1500 tpd of C.I.P. mill feed averaging .10 oz gold per ton, and 1500 tpd of heap leach material averaging .025 oz gold per ton. Cutoff grades are 0.04 for mill feed, and 0.01 for heap leaching. Stripping ratio is 9 tons of waste and leach grade to 1 ton of mill feed.The project is located in northern Nevada at 4900 feet above sea level.,Winters are fairly severe, with freezing conditions affecting operations from early December through April. Although officially designated as ""high-mountain desert"" country, snow and/or freezing rain occur almost every week of the winter.To date, all Pinson production-scale heap leaching has treated run-90,000 tons of ore are stacked on 300 foot square clay leach pads. Cyanide leach solution is applied through ""wobbler"" sprinklers at .0025 gpm/sq ft for 60 to 90 days. The pregnant solution flows from the heap by gravity to plastic-lined ditches, into a collection sump and then through buried piping to the 2.2 million gallon pregnant solution pond."

THE use of organic and inorganic stains has found wide application as a means of detection and estimation of organic fibres. Such stains have enabled the analyst to distinguish between organic fibres of different type and even between wood fibres produced by different processes. Among these stains, aqueous iodine solutions have figured prominently, as in the case of the well-known Sutermeister and Herzberg stains. At the Johns-Manville laboratories, the idea of applying a stain to asbestos fibres was first considered solely as a visual aid in the microscopic examination of such fibres. The staining medium used in this work consisted of a 1 per cent solution of iodine in C.P. glycerine, the latter being used extensively here as a dispersing and mounting liquid for asbestos fibre. This iodine solution was found to have distinct staining properties when used on the local chrysotile fibres, and to improve greatly their visibility under the microscope. It was soon revealed, however, that this staining is apparently limited to the chrysotile variety of asbestos, as against other varieties. It can be readily seen that, if such were the case, the staining test would become a very useful tool in differentiating between chrysotile fibre and the other mineral fibres, without recourse to a lengthy chemical analysis. Hence this investigation was launched, with the purpose of obtaining more information as to the selectivity of this stain as well as its mechanism. The only previous work of this nature that could be found in the literature was that of Van Winsen and Graham (1, 2, 3) on the adsorption of erioviolet dye by serpentine and related magnesia minerals. However, these authors did not refer to any specific behaviour of chrysotile as against other types of asbestos fibre.

Philip Argall, Denver Col. (communication to the Secretary): Dr. Raymond claims (Trans., xxiii., 560)) that my statement (p. 557) regarding the crystallization of iron "is beyond question incorrect." He says: "It is not even settled that vibration will crystallize iron under any conditions." While admitting that authorities differ on the possibility of cold crystallization of iron, I believe it is a settled and undisputed fact that vibration in the presence of heat will crystallize iron. Bloxam and Huntington say :* " Vibration assists 'in converting fibrous metal (iron) back into a crystalline state when heated, a lower temperature sufficing than in the absence of vibration." Mr. A. F. Hill, summing up a very exhaustive review upon the crystallization of iron and steel, pronounces against crystallization, but only at temperatures below 900' F. Mr. Howe, discussing ,the breakage of a 20-foot porter-bar with a crystalline fracture, suggests that it was attributable to heat, jointly with the jar. We see, then, that vibration of heated iron bars will induce crystallization and consequent change of structure. Referring to my statement, I wish to point out, that I was discussing the vibration of stamps arid should have said, "vibration under all such conditions," etc. That is, vibration attended with sharp blows, such as a stamp-stem is subjected to, will crystallize iron; yet I believe that intense vibration under any condition will

The use of ceramic-in-rubber pulley lagging on bulk material belt conveyors is increasing. Many of the applications have been on pulleys originally installed with rubber lagging. There is a consensus that the fiction characteristics of the ceramic material are significantly better but the factors quoted vary, possibly because the more complex traction mechanism of the dimpled ceramic elements on the belt is not well understood. In this paper we will report and evaluate field data from a number of field installations to provide a study of actual friction characteristics in successful applications for those who desire reliable data for using ceramic-in-rubber lagging in new conveyor designs.

The “Building Our Future” project is a collaborative initiative between the UNC SME Student Chapter and the Water and Earth Museum (MAT) of Asociación Los Andes Cajamarca (ALAC), both corporate entities of Newmont Yanacocha. Its mission is to promote responsible and sustainable mining among new generations while fostering a culture of equality and respect. This comprehensive educational program integrates sustainable development goals and includes workshops led professionals and external experts who share their personal stories to inspire students from rural and urban educational institutions to follow their dreams. Additionally, for this year 2024, the project development and implemented an interactive mobile application that educates users about the use of minerals in everyday life through four levels: Minerals in the Home, Minerals in Medicine, Minerals in Transportation, and Minerals in Agriculture. This multi-faceted approach seeks to raise awareness about the importance of mining in Peru’s economic, environmental, and social development, ultimately fostering a new generation of informed and engaged citizens who understand the vital role of mining in a sustainable future.

When supersonic oxygen jetting is used in electric furnace steelmaking, the lance jet axis is typically inclined at larger angles to the vertical than is used in basic oxygen steelmaking. The supersonic jet is important not only for refining the steel, but for sustaining the foamy slag in the electric furnace. Physical modeling was carried out using a room temperature, two-dimensional slice apparatus in which mercury represented the metal and water-glycerol the slag. High speed video photography with image analysis was used to study the effects of the angle of inclination on the slag/metal bath. Mathematical modeling using FLUENT provided a method of predicting flow patterns and the trajectories of drops injected at various points in the flowfield. A one-half scale water model of the system, in which lance heights, angles, and flowrates simulated those encountered in steelmaking operations, was used to provide a better understanding of some aspects of the oxygen blowing process in electric furnace steelmaking.

"Zinc dust is used for the removal of primary impurities by cementation from the zinc sulphate electrolyte before electrowinning of zinc. However, the industrial zinc electrowinning plants has been reported that the zinc dust consumption is in large excess than the stoichiometric requirement. In the present investigation, morphology of the zinc dust has been altered by ball milling and utilized for the cementation of cadmium, which is one of the major impurity and compared the change in the rate of cementation with original zinc dust. Initially, 325 mesh size zinc dust was used for the optimization of the excess quantity of zinc dust to be used at a temperature of 50 °C. The chemical analysis of zinc dust before and after ball milling and morphology were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the solution was characterized by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The rate of cementation increased with increase in ball milling time. The residual precipitate obtained after filtration was also characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis. Finally experiments were conducted to study the effect of temperature and kinetics of cadmium cementation using first order reaction kinetics. Based on the integral method, the calculated activation energy for the cadmium cementation with 4-hours ball milled zinc dust was found to be 3.39 KJ/mole. INTRODUCTION Primary production of zinc in the world is carried out by hydrometallurgical route. The primary impurities in the neutralized zinc sulphate solution that cause negative effect on electrowinning are copper, cadmium, cobalt, and nickel. Copper diminishes the current efficiency and cadmium contaminates the cathode zinc (Morgan, 1977) while electro winning. Nickel and cobalt lead to perforation in the zinc deposit and prevents the electro winning process (Abrasheva et al, 1984). Due to higher electro positivity of these metal impurities than zinc, they can co-deposit with cathode zinc at the time of electrolysis. In addition to that, some possible impurities (including cobalt) in the electrolysis may lower the hydrogen overvoltage, allowing deposition of hydrogen at cathode resulting in fall of current efficiency. The deposition of zinc on the cathode is possible only at higher hydrogen overvoltage which is practicable in the absence of such impurities (Raghavan et al., 1999). Cementation is one of the prominent purification technique, and in that less reactive metal can be replaced by highly reactive metal by allowing them into precipitation. Cementation of cadmium from zinc sulphate electrolyte is being done by the addition of zinc dust."

Potash is a generic term that includes potassium chloride, potassium magnesium sulfate, potassium sulfate, potassium nitrate, and sodium-potassium nitrate mixtures. In the ceramics industry, potash is also used to refer to potassium oxide. Potash, primarily in the form of potassium carbonate, was the first industrial mineral produced in the United States, and the first US patent issued was for an apparatus and process developed in 1790 for its production (Paynter, 1990). Prior to the 1860s, potash was primarily sold as an impure form of potassium carbonate produced by burning hard- wood trees and leaching the potassium salts from the ashes. The major early uses of potash include soap and glass making, dyeing fabrics, baking, and saltpeter for gunpowder. In 1859, the development of a purification process to remove the sodium and magnesium chlorides was developed for the carnallite found at Stassfurt, Germany, and mined potash became available. With the appearance of mined potash and the earlier (1840) discovery in Germany by Justus von Liebig that potash was a nutrient for crops, potash started to be used for high valued crops such as cotton and vegetables. The German potash companies quickly developed a manufacturing process for producing potassium sulfate for tobacco fertilization. German potash supplied nearly all American needs until the embargo of the First World War when imports from Germany were interrupted (Bateman, 1918). With the discovery of potash deposits in New Mexico in 1931, the United States became self-sufficient in potash. In 1962, the United States began importing potash from Canada, and two years later domestic apparent consumption began to exceed domestic production. Along with nitrogen and phosphorus, potassium is one of the three essential plant nutrients, the "K" of NPK terminology. As a result, 95% of potash production is used as plant fertilizer. In all plants, inadequate potassium diminishes growth, causes increased disease, stalk and stem breakage, and susceptibility to other stress conditions. Plants take up large quantities of potassium from the soil, and potash fertilization replaces this loss so that each new crop can be grown with the same vigor and productivity as the previous year's crop. The potassium depletion of the soil from growing repeated cotton and tobacco crops is well known in the history of southern agriculture in America. George Washington was known to have studied alternative crops that could be grown on soil that had been depleted by repeated tobacco crops. Most of the remaining 5% of potash consumption is by the chemical industry, as potassium hydroxide to produce soaps and detergents, glass and ceramic products, dyes, explosives, alkaline batteries, and medicines. Potash as chemical is used in oil field drilling mud, the aluminum recycling industry, and the electroplating industry. Additional minor uses for potassium chloride include water softener regeneration, sidewalk deicing, and salt substitution for human consumption. Potash is used in the food industry as potassium phosphate, and in production of glass products as potassium carbonate or nitrate. GEOLOGY Potassium is the seventh most abundant element in the earth's crust and the sixth most abundant element in seawater. It is found in silicate minerals of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks and is also a major constituent of many surface and subsurface brines. The majority of world potash resources are found in subsurface bedded salt deposits which yield high grade, large tonnage ore bodies and are amenable to low cost mining and beneficiation. Because of the relatively high solubility of potassium minerals, potash from salt deposits is ideal for use as fertilizers. Some potash production is from evaporation of naturally occurring brines, but the vast majority of current domestic and international production is from bedded salt deposits. Sylvite, carnallite, kainite, and langbeinite are some of the more important potassium minerals (Table 1). Sylvinite, a mixture of KC1 and NaCl is the highest grade potash ore. Carnallite can be considered a potash ore when removal of magnesium chloride is included in the beneficiation, but it can also be considered a contaminant when mining for sylvite. Potassium sulfate and potassium nitrate are typically manufactured products. Potassium sulfate is produced from mined minerals through conversion processes in Italy, Germany, and Carlsbad, NM, and from brines in southern California and at the Great Salt Lake in Utah. Natural deposits of potassium nitrate occur only in small amounts in Chile. The majority of potash-bearing bedded salt deposits are believed to have originated from the evaporation of seawater or mixtures of seawater and other brines in restricted marine basins (Schmalz, 1969). The reflux depositional model for evaporite deposition was first described in the literature in 1888 by Ochsenius. A shallow bar, or sill, across the mouth of a basin lets in a restricted flow of seawater which evaporates into a salt-precipitating brine (Fig. 1). The density of the brine at the distal end increases with increased salinity, sinks to the bottom, and sets up a reflux current of higher density brine back toward the ocean. The sill, which restricts the inflow of seawater, allows inhibited flow of evaporation-concentrated brines back to the ocean. The least soluble salts are precipitated nearer the sill, and the most soluble components come out of solution in the deeper parts of the basin. The result is a lateral facies change in a tabular-shaped deposit that is due to the salinity gradients in the brine (Fig. 2A). The asymmetrical facies distribution of the Paradox Formation (Middle Pennsylvanian) Utah (Hite, 1970), the Prairie Formation (Middle Devonian) in Saskatchewan (Holter, 1972), and the Salado Formation (Upper Permian) in New Mexico (Lowenstein, 1988), might prompt explanation by such a model. Other deposits, such as the Salina Formation (Upper Silurian) in Michigan (Matthews and Egleson, 1974), show a facies distribution that could be described as a bull's eye pattern. Although some small subbasins of high grade sylvite are found near the margins, the potash is generally located in a central part of the basin surrounded by successively less soluble facies (Fig. 2B). In this study, recovery of copper from solid material (obtained by leaching of chalcopyrite with oxalic acid in the presence of hydrogen peroxide) with a copper oxalate structure was carried out selectively using HCl. The chemical composition of the solid was as 29.3%, 9.7%, and 13.3% for Cu, Fe, and S, respectively. Selective recovery of copper by degrading the copper oxalate structure with a low-solubility product (Ksp = 4.43 × 10−10) was performed by conventional leaching in the presence of HCl. The optimum leaching conditions were determined as 5 M of HCl concentration, 318 K of leaching temperature, 120 min of leaching time, 25 ml/g of liquid–solid ratio and 400 rpm of stirring speed. Under these conditions, approximately 77% of copper and 3% of iron were taken into the solution. According to the characterization of the leach residue that was obtained, the oxalate structure was degraded. Moreover, the results of XRD analysis showed that the sulfur (S) and cubanite (CuFe2S3) phases were mostly observed in leaching residues, and this was supported by the SEM-EDX data. Based on the results, it may be stated that selective copper extraction can be obtained from a chalcopyrite concentrate by a two-step leaching method using a conventional hydrometallurgical technique.

Determination of cut-off grade?strategy is one of the most important stages of open pit mine planning and design. It is the parameter directly influencing the financial, technical, economic, legal, environmental, social and political issues in relation to mining operation. Choosing the optimum cut-off grade strategy that maximises the economic outcome has been a major topic of research workers for nearly one century. Many researchers have contributed in devising methods and algorithms, such as dynamic programming, linear programming, optimal control and so on for various aspects of its determination. In this paper, a non-linear mathematical programming for cut-off grade strategy optimisation is presented, considering the three main stages of mining operation introduced by K F Lane. In this model maximisation of net present value of mining operation, under the three constraints of mining stagesÆ capacities, considered as the optimisation criteria. Due to the discrete representation of the mining resource, the proposed non-linear formulation is approximated by a non-linear signomial geometric programming. According to non-convexity and the complexity of the proposed model, an augmented Lagrangian genetic algorithm was used to find the optimum cut-off grade strategy under varying and fixed price circumstances. To validate the proposed non-linear model efficiency, the results were compared with the results obtained by the K F Lane methodology. It was found that the proposed non-linear model works efficiently in the determination of cut-off grade strategy. According to the simplicity of the structure of non-linear programming modelling in comparison with dynamic programming it is hoped that, further development of this model would certainly provide the ability of considering managerial and technical flexibilities as well as incorporating more real mining conditions in the determination of cut-off grade strategy optimisation.

The current practice of magnetite ore agglomeration involves high temperature oxidation roasting (typically at 1200–1350°C) of magnetite to hematite phase in order to improve the strength and reducibility of pellets. The requirement to pre-oxidise the magnetite before introduction to an ironmaking plant increases the CO2 emissions generated during the ironmaking process. In our previous papers, a novel, alternative agglomeration route for magnetite ores was presented where magnetite was converted to a reducible CaFe3O5 (CWF) phase through the addition of lime to produce a Lime-Magnetite Pellet (LMP) feedstock that can be directly charged to ironmaking units. The LMP process eliminates the magnetite oxidation stage, thereby reducing the CO2 emission during ironmaking. The concept was tested by thermodynamic calculations, high temperature experiments and scaled-down pilot scale test work. In this paper, larger scale synthesis of halfstoichiometric LMPs (1 mole of Fe3O4 and ½ mole of CaCO3) were prepared using a balling drum, followed by overnight drying at 110°C and induration at 1050°C for two hours. The LMPs were analysed using X-Ray Diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscope techniques for phase and microstructure characterisation. The LMPs were found to have 14–15 wt. per cent of CWF phase when indurated under a CO2/CO ratio of 8.5:1. Pilot scale testing of the LMPs was conducted following ISO standard test procedures. The test results indicated the LMP’s had a Reducibility Index (RI) of over 91 per cent, a Tumbler Index (TI) of 87 per cent and a Reduction Degradation Index (RDI) of 4.6 per cent. The results indicate LMPs may be useful as an alternative feedstock to ironmaking processes that would result in lower overall CO2 emissions.
