"Coal fly-ash(CFA) from thermal power plants is rich in Al2O3, which has great potential as an alternative resource for alumina production. In this work, Alz03 contained in the coal fly-ash was extracted using an acid sintering-leaching process. This process was enhanced by aid of power ultrasound during the leaching. The recovery rate of Al2O3 was increased with ultrasound, compared with the similar process without ultrasound under the identical operation conditions. Leaching temperature can be lowered by about 10-l5°C and the processing time reduced by about 50%. The process kinetics were investigated in details for a better understanding of the fundamentals on the effects of power ultrasound. The obtained results demonstrate the potential application in reducing processing energy and increasing production rate.Introduction Coal fly ash is a typical solid waste generated from coal combustion in thermal power station. Vast amount of CF A accumulation lead to serious environmental problems such as air and water pollution, cropland occupation, radioactive contamination, etc. However, CFA is rich in Al2O3 and SiO2 content, so that it has a potential use as recourses for alumina and silica production [1]. Aluminum industry, especially in China, has made a rapid expansion in recent years accompanying with a large amount of bauxite consumption, resulting a urgent demand to develop secondary alumina resources like CF A to maintain a sustainable development of aluminum industry that faces grim challenge [2].Acid leaching is an efficient technology to use in alumina extraction from CF A. Since the particle of CF A is not naturally existed mineral but was formed in molten state at high temperature, the internal Al-O-Si bonds are so strong to separate alumina from the ash particle. Because of this reason, the direct acid leaching [3-6] operated at ambient temperature has low extraction efficiency, approximate 30% to 40%, which is attributed to self inhibition effect from CaS04 generated by reaction between CaO and H2S04 [7-8]. High pressure leaching can efficiently decompose mullite to release A12O 3 content in the fly ash particles, but this requires autoclave material having strong acid corrosion resistance, high temperature (100°C-300°C) and pressure (1.0MPa-2.SMPa) resistance while its operating security is low and its acid consumption is large [9]. Concentrated acid boil process is conducted at near acid boiling point (200 °C - 300 °C) in 4 mouth flask wrapped by electric heating jacket with high mass ratio of acid and ash to achieve high Al203 recovery rate from CFA. Its disadvantages are similar to the high pressure leaching technology except no-pressure, and also the operating solution at nearly boiling point acid may easily spill and splash with additional acid loss and potential safety hazard [10]."

Geometallurgy is not a mechanism designed to replace current geological and metallurgical deposit characterisation but an added component required to understand orebody variability. Current geological characterisation approaches focus on understanding deposit genesis aimed at identifying new mineralised regions and metallurgical characterisation determines parameters required for engineering design of processing plants. Geometallurgical integration has the task of drawing on aspects of each stream to enable spatial mapping of performance indices across a deposit. It is a complimentary activity to current practice and adds a new dimension to orebody knowledge. Although the notion of conducting an integrated geological and metallurgical analysis is not a new concept, limited publications exist in the field proposing integrated methods, with several technical issues existing in current geometallurgical integration approaches. An iterative method drawing on existing geological and metallurgical characterisation and new measurement tools and inputs is proposed. The integrated method comprises of discrete components dynamically linked together through iterative feedback loops with each component having a specific purpose achieved by applying a range of data acquisition technologies and statistical tests. The key outcomes of the method are:overcoming the lack of optimised geometallurgical domains relevant to processing performance,development of a rigorous approach to identifying parameters controlling processability,improved protocols for relevant metallurgical test data and sample selection, andability to generate greater data support to enable rigorous geostatistical modelling of geometallurgical attributes. This paper outlines the integrated mapping and modelling method developed and draws on multiple data acquisition technologies applied within the AMIRA P843 GeMIII Project.

WIIen clean iron and metallic zinc dust, protected from the air, arc heated below the melting point of zinc, the iron takes on a coating that has excellent protective value. This coating is a brittle alloy of zinc and iron, and the process is called sherardizing. Although the zinc particlcs are covered with oxide and cannot touch the iron, an extremcly small amount of the zinc vaporizes and the vapor, reaching the iron, alloys with it. Other zinc then vaporizes to replace that which has been removed from the atmosphere. This process continues indefinitely at a decreasing rate, for the coating already formed permits zinc to diffuse through it to combine with the iron beneath. In this way, the coating grows outward from the surface of the iron, as the bark grows from a tree. The method of growth was clcarly seen while sherardizing small cubes of cast iron, at about 450" C., in a srnall glass-stoppcrcd bottle enclosed in a rotating drum. The dust contained about 3 per cent. iron, which prevented caking, and coatings % in. thick were grown in a few hours. After a heavy layer had been formed, the cubes mere again treated for a shorter time. The layer last formed was seen to lie next to the iron, instead of at the outer surface, showing that the growth was from the surface of the iron outward. The coatings split at the edges and corners, leaving the iron exposed there. Flakes of graphite from the iron were lifted upward and embedded in the coatings. The composition of sherardized coatings varies from the outer surface inward, as would be expected from the mode of growth. That is, the iron content increases slowly at first, then more rapidly as the iron is approached. At the surface the least amount of iron possible is 6 per cent., as the experiments described below have shown. A study was made of the effect of iron in zinc dust on the proccss and on the resulting coatings. Glass bulbs, holding the small pieces to be sherardized, together with enough zinc dust to make them two-thirds full, were heated in a small, rotating electrically heated and controlled furnacc. THERE were produced in this country in 1923 probably in the neighborhood of 12,000 or 13,000 tons of refined and crude arsenic, by far the greater portion coming as a by product of smelting operations. Early this year copper smelters were producing arsenic at the rate of about 425 tons per month and lead smelters at the rate of 7;0 tons per month. During the entire eighteen years prior to 1919, there were produced in the United States only 47,000 tons of arsenic, which amounts to only 25 per cent. of the present output. The great increased demand has come about through the augmented use of arsenates as insecticides and arsenates as weed killers. In an extract from "Mineral Resources of the United States" on "Arsenic in 1922," Messrs. Heikes and Loughlin say, "The minimum possible demand for arsenic in 1923 was estimated at the end of 1922 to be about 13,000 tons, including 2000 tons for plate glass manufacturers, 3000 tons for lead arsenate, 3500 tons for calcium arsenate, 1500 tons for weed killers, 1200 tons for Paris green, 1000 tons for sheep dips and 750 tons for proprietary mixtures. More recent information, however, indicates twice as great a demand for calcium arsenate." The latter has found great use in the last three or four years as a weapon to combat the boll weevil pest of the southern cotton belt. ~t the present writing refined white arsenic is being quoted on the New York market at from 13)d c. to 1455 c. per Ib., while the average price during the eighteen-year period just mentioned was 4.8 c.

Introduction Operation is underway at the Dutch Creek No. 1 mine of the first US longwall panel to be mined under the cooperative agreement between the US Bu¬reau of Mines and Mid-Continent Resources. The 244-m (800-ft) wide longwall face is part of a multilift longwall demonstration. A 3-m (10-ft) top slice is being extracted from the 8.5-m (28-ft) coal seam. This occurs in an area of the property where the Coal Basin A and Coal Basin B beds have come together to form one seam. This face, longest ever operated in the US, is being worked on an advancing longwall system. During the first months of its operation, this longwall face has been very productive and safe. Mid-Continent Resources operates two coal mines in the Coal Basin, located in the White River National Forest near Carbondale, CO. The Colorado Fuel and Iron Co. originally opened this property in 1895, and conducted a small mining operation for 10 years on the north rim of the basin and then abruptly shut down. Mid-Continent began operations in 1956, after the Coal Basin fields had lain idle for about 60 years. Operations commenced at the outcrop of the Coal Basin B bed situated at the 3-km (10,000-ft) elevation. At this time, coal was produced from Coal Basin A and Coal Basin B seams in the area. Since 1981, operations have been centralized at two mines, the Dutch Creek No. 1 and the Dutch Creek No. 2, both located in the center of the basin. Since 1981, Mid-Continent has shifted its emphasis to longwall mining as the primary method of production, and each of these mines is equipped with state-of-the-art longwalls using shields as the method of roof support. A 4-km (13,000-ft) long twin-bore rock tunnel is being driven at a lower elevation of 2.4 km (8,000 ft) to intersect the coal seams at depth, as they dip 12° in a westerly direction. This tunnel will enable the company to reduce costs by replacing trucks with conveyor belt haulage (Fig. 1). Mid-Continent began longwall operations in May 1976 with the US's first modern, mechanized advancing longwall face, using chocks. In August 1978, a second advancing longwall face was started. Results from two faces showed that the mining system could be used effectively to manage the difficult conditions encountered in both the Dutch Creek No. 1 and the L. S. Wood No. 3 mines. Unfortunately, low productivity and high costs plagued the company's advancing faces. The problems resulted principally from major equipment failures, poorly designed chocks and face conveyors, and the lack of an efficient, cost effective system for building packwalls. Flushing of rock between chocks and roof control were also major problems. In Sept. 1979, Mid-Continent and the US Bureau of Mines entered into a cooperative agreement to demonstrate the feasibility of mining thick coal seams using the multilift longwall mining method. Two lifts are to be used to mine the 8.5-m (28-ft) thick coal seam in Dutch Creek No. 1 mine. The Bureau provided mining equipment for 180 m (600 ft) of longwall face. This included the shields, face conveyor and drive units, shearing machines, panel belt, and stageloader. As a result of previous experience in advancing longwall mining, Mid-Continent purchased an additional 60 m (200 ft) of face, including roof supports and an additional face conveyor. "The High Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) plant for nickel-cobalt mixed sulphide production at Coral Bay Nickel Corporation (CBNC) in the Philippines has been in operation since 2005 with a capacity of 10,000 t/year of nickel. Subsequent to the commissioning of the second plant in 2008, the production capacity increased to 22,000 t/year of nickel (Llerin et al., 2011). CBNC’s annual nickel production reached more than 24,000 tons of nickel in 2014. The concepts to achieve this capacity are the high availability and the reciprocally flexible operation of both plants. The availability depends on some factors, such as the control of impurities in the process and the equipment condition, to mention a few. In the HPAL process, it is not only the autoclave operating conditions that affect nickel extraction but also the impurities in the ore greatly influence it. The major element in the ore is iron and most of this iron is precipitated as Fe2O3, while the rest remains as Fe2+ or Fe3+ sulphate in solution. These ions in solution reduce the availability, so it is important to control the formation of iron ions by controlling the impurities in feed ore as well as the HPAL conditions. This paper presents the general HPAL process and the behaviour of impurities, focusing on iron behaviour in the HPAL process.INTRODUCTIONCoral Bay Nickel Corporation ProfileCoral Bay Nickel Corporation (CBNC) was founded on April 2002, as a joint venture of four companies; namely, Mitsui Corporation (18%), Sojitz Corporation (18%), Nickel Asia Corporation (10%) and Sumitomo Metal Mining Corporation (SMM) with a controlling stake of 54%. Aside from its capital share, Nickel Asia Corporation also supplies the ore and limestone for the High Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) plant located in Rio Tuba, Philippines, as shown in Figure 1 (Tsuchida, 2008). The objective of the CBNC project is to produce 22,000 t/year (original design) of nickel and 1,500 t/year of cobalt, as sulphide, by the treatment of nickel laterite ore which is a low grade nickel oxide ore in the Philippines (Mines and Geosciences Bureau, 2014). The sulphide product has been exported as a raw material to the SMM Nickel Refinery in Japan for 30 years. The product of this plant, a mixed (Ni/Co) sulphide, is shipped to the SMM’s Nickel Refinery in Niihama, Japan. SMM Corporation provides the technology and management personnel to the plant. SMM Corporation also supplies the sulphuric acid, which is the main reagent for the HPAL process."

The mainstream of copper smelting processes in the world today is a combination of Outokumpu type Flash smelting and PS (Pierse Smith) converting process. Presently it can be estimated that about 50% of the worldwide copper production is produced by the Flash smelting process and 80% by the PS converting process. PS converting process due to its operational flexibility and despite its batch character of operation has been widely used in many smelters for more than 100 years. However, an environmental issue has been pointed out related to this process because of the difficulty of handling the fugitive gases. Recently several copper smelters in the world have been newly construeted and others have executed major modification and modernization. The continuous converting process has been applied in many of them instead of PS converting process. This paper compares PS to the emerging continuous converting process and makes a prospect of the future of the copper converting process.

At least for the time being, these seems to be general but not universal agreement that Mississippi Valley type ore deposits formed entirely or in major proportion from heated connate brines (e.g. 1) Even with that agreement, major questions remain. I will present a coherent geochemical model and look at alternative views in the context of that model. The pattern of the following discussion is 1) the general geochemistry of the ore fluid, 2) the density-temperature relations and possible mechanisms of flow of those fluids, 3) the mechanisms of transportation and deposition of the ore minerals, and 4) a summary of a coherent model of genesis. The data equivocally define much about the deposits. The answer is still elusive.

Valorization of slag from metallurgical industrial processes becomes ever more important as this may help optimizing and reducing the use of natural resources such as rock and sand. In view of this objective, metallurgical processes have to be analyzed in order to modify the slag composition so that it will meet the expected requirements of potential users of these resources. This paper gives the results of a thermodynamic analysis of the flash smelting process to understand the impact of operational parameters on slag chemistry and elemental partitioning in the process. It is shown that an increase of the matte grade and temperature leads to higher deportment of Pb, Zn and As to the slag. With increasing matte grade the volatilization of these elements decreases. Furthermore, the results indicate an increasing solubility of Cu and S in slag at higher temperatures.

The Bulli and Wongawilli Seams, the two principal sources of coking coal for the Port KKembla steelworks of Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd., vary in rank and in type over the Southern and -South Western Coalfields. The Bulli Seam, ranging widely in type, produces coke varying from weak to strong. The Wongawilli Seam, more consistent in type, produces coke of more consistent strength, but considerably less strong than that from the best Bulli Seam coal. Plans of seam variation show the regional trends in rank and type for each sear. The strongest coke is derived from coal containing between 45 and 55 per cent vitrinite, m.m.f. This is obtainable from the Bulli Sean in a zone embracing Bulli and Appin Colleries.

The Cave-In-Rock Flourspar District is located in the northeast part of Hardin County, Illinois and is the most northeasterly occurrence of flour spar of the Illinois-Kentucky Flour spar Area. The occurrence of these deposits is confined to an area about one and one-half miles wide and five miles long parallel to the Peters Creek Fault (Fig. 1) The delineation of several features that may be described as breccia pipes has permitted the definition of the point of ascent of solutions to the host horizon and the lateral spread from these points.

Fluctuating metal prices, declining head grade, and increased operational costs are forcing many open pit mining companies to look to their balance sheets for significant cost reductions in order to remain competitive. Maintenance continues to represent a significant proportion of the total operating costs in the mining industry. Compared with the other major cost components of the mining process, very little effort has gone into maintenance optimization. The potential payoff from maintenance optimization on the cash cost of the commodity is enormous. A large percentage of these costs are incurred in unscheduled maintenance events, which typically cause serious disruptions to the production process. These maintenance-induced production losses can be a significant contributor to the overall operating costs. A structured proactive maintenance approach using the latest advances in technology can achieve dramatic cost reductions and productivity improvements. Remote condition monitoring systems are becoming increasingly commonplace and have the potential to identify problems prior to failure. Detection of equipment degradation prior to failure will enable repairs to be scheduled thereby reducing costs and interruptions to production. Remote condition monitoring technology has evolved rapidly in recent years, with a host of new tools becoming available to assist mine operators in improving their maintenance operations. These tools have capabilities such as remote real-time vital signs and performance monitoring, alarm/event handling, trend analysis, and maintenance workflow management. When these monitoring tools are used in conjunction with a mine management system, the vital signs data can be integrated and associated with maintenance history, predictive maintenance data, operational information, and geographical information. This integrated approach to the management of vital maintenance data will help shift the mobile equipment maintenance paradigm from reactive to proactive. This paper will introduce a proactive approach to the management of the maintenance process and the tools required to facilitate this process.

Arthur Yates, lecturer in the mining department of the Royal School of Mines, London, died at Blackpool, on Feb. 14, 1923, at the age of 47 years. My first acquaintance with him was made in 1902, when taking over the management of the Redjang Lebong gold mines in Sumatra, of which he was the responsible metallurgical officer. For that position he was well qualified by reason of his previous experience with the Rand Central Ore Reduction Co., in South Africa, and particularly by his early training with the Cassel Gold Extracting Co., owners of the MacArthur-Forrest patents, and the first commercial company formed to work the then recently discovered cyanide process; in this connection, Mr. Yates had the advantage of working under J. S. MacArthur himself. Our association in Sumatra was maintained for six years, when I left. Mr. Yates remained and was eventually promoted to the management of the neighboring Soelit mine. During those six years and in the close association inseparable from life in an isolated mining camp, the sterling qualities which made him so good a man were unmistakable: industry and interest in his work, patience with everybody, a quiet and unassuming demeanor. On the exhaustion of the mine to which he had been promoted, he returned to England in 1913. In 1914, the Mining Department of the Imperial College was fortunate in securing his services. Hardly, however, had he settled down when the war broke out and he spent some years in the Cleveland District promoting the efforts of the Government toward greater output. Returning to college in 1919, Mr. Yates met the full flood of Service students. The qualities which made him a man amongst men in the world made him a man among students in the college; a senior student if you like. But, unsuspected, a dread disease had fastened itself upon him, making itself felt for the first time during the summer course he was conducting in the South Wales coal field, in 1922. Against its relentless onset he opposed the bravest optimism, and when at last he realized that he was going under, and was in fact dying, his pronounced regret was that he was leaving the boys. In his death, at the age of forty-seven, staff and students in the Mining Department have experienced a great loss, that of a reliable friend, and their deepest sympathy goes out to the young widow and son in their irreparable loss. Experiments were conducted in 2- and 4-inch-diameter standpipes to evaluate the effectiveness of standpipes as pressure seals. During the experiments, these standpipes conveyed Alan-Wood magnetite (60 to 230 U.S. standard sieve mesh) by gravity flow from one vessel to another of relatively higher pressure. The information obtained has been helpful in a Federal Bureau of Mines investigation of how to make either synthesis gas or hydrogen by a modified steam-iron process employing a continuous recycling stream of granular iron-iron oxide at temperatures of 600° to 900° C. In this process the mixture of granular material flows by gravity from a reduction vessel at low pressures to an oxidation vessel at higher pressures. Data from the 2- and 4-inch-diameter standpipes indicate that it would be practical to use a standpipe as a pressure seal between the reductor and oxidizer. Investigators found that, by gravity flow, the standpipe could convey the Alan-Wood magnetite against pressure gradients up to 1.07 pounds per square inch per foot of column height.

Molten slags, fluxes and salts play key roles in a wide range of the high temperature industrial process applications, including metals production, refining and recycling, metal manufacturing processes, electrochemical metal production cells, batteries, and efficient heat transfer media. Recognising the importance and significance of fundamental scientific knowledge of these systems, the International MOLTEN Conference series was established to provide a forum to bring together leading academic researchers and industrial engineers to present and discuss the latest scientific ideas and findings, and their application in their respective fields. This article presents an analysis of the research carried out in this field over time in terms of the number of journal articles, fields and slag systems studied and geographical origin of the research.

Two basic cases involved in the design of an opening in bedded rock are: 1) where the beds deflect from each other so as to be separated; and 2) where the beds deflect onto their lower neighbor, loading the latter while reducing their own load. Analysis of case 1 is relatively simple, while the interference of the original deflection curves in case 2 complicates analysis of the latter. Figures and formulae are presented for determination of interference loading in this situation. The design of an opening in bedded rock involves two basic alternatives.1'2 In one case the beds deflect away from each other, so as to be separated from their neighbors; in the other case the beds deflect onto their lower neighbor, loading it, while reducing their own load. This is shown in Fig. 1. The first case lends itself to a simple analysis, since the upper and lower boundaries of each beam remain a free surface. In the latter case, however, due to the interference of original deflection curves, the analysis is more complex. Earlier investigators of this interference problem solved it by making the tacit assumption that this type of loading was uniformly distributed along the beam's length. While there is no intuitive justification for this assumption, its use does lead to an approximate solution. Still, a more exact solution does not require this apparently unrealistic restriction. To achieve initial simplicity, the analysis will at first be limited to a two-bedded sequence, as in Fig. 2. Since both beams have identical end conditions and spans, the original deflections of their center lines are members of the same family of curves, as shown in Fig. 3. Therefore, if interference occurs at one point along their center lines, it will occur at every point. For convenience, the midspan point is that usually examined. Deflection at midspan for a uniformly loaded beam regardless of end conditions is: where c is a constant depending on end conditions; w is the body load and equals yh, lb per ft; y is the specific weight of rock, lb per ft'; L is the span, ft; E is Young's Modulus, lb per ft2; I is moment of inertia (for a rectangular section), I = bh3/12 = h3/12, (ft4); b is the width of beam and equals one; and h is the thickness of beam, ft; or 3U > yB an Substituting the appropriate values into Eq. lb, interference between the two beds can be predicted. Should it occur, the additional loads along the lower boundary of the upper bed and the upper boundary of the lower bed must be determined. From the principle of action and reaction, these added loads are known to be equal and opposite, as indicated in Fig. 4. Since the final deflection curves for both beds are identical (Fig. 3), their successive derivatives of y with respect tox must also be identical. That is:

During the past several years a new insoluble lead anode has been developed for copper electrowinning. The new anode consists of a rolled lead-calcium-tin alloy sheet attached to a slotted copper bus bar by a soldering process which produces a complete metallurgical bond between bar and sheet. The metallurgical bond greatly reduces the resistance between the bus bar and the lead sheet and the high conductivity does not deteriorate during the life of the anode. The rolled anode thins uniformly and does not suffer preferential grain boundary or internal corrosion commonly seen in cast anodes. The lead-calcium alloy containing a high tin content corrodes slowly because the rolling process produces a uniform, fine grained structure. The wrought product is very strong and ductile; and contains no internal defects, segregation, cracks, or pores which can reduce the life of the anode. Because the anodes corrode uniformly, a high percentage of the anode thickness can be utilized thus extending the life of the wrought anodes. The anode alloy composition which is stable only in wrought form, produces exceptional resistance to passivation during current interruptions. First introduced into liberator cells, the new electrowinning anodes have been specified as the anodes of choice for every new SX-EW tankhouse constructed in the last two years. This paper describes the new anode, its method of construction, service history, and how it differs from present copper electrowinning anodes.
