The Coeur d'Alene mining district in northern Idaho, USA is the second largest producer of silver in the world. Mesothermal silver-lead-zinc veins occur in the metasedimentary rocks of the Belt Supergroup with five main types of associated hydrothermal alteration: 1) feldspar destruction, 2) hydrothermal bleaching, 3) carbonatisation, 4) sulfidation, and 5) silicification. Hydrothermal bleaching is characterised by hematite destruction with associated siderite and quartz veins and veinlets, coarse euhedral pyrite and magnetite. Bleached zones envelop both mineralised and barren veins and extend for metres to tens of metres into the wall rocks. Carbonatisation consists of addition of siderite, which occurs as veins, veinlets, stockwork, irregular blebs or spots, and coarsely disseminated grains, depending on the relative distance from the main vein structure. Siderite envelops nearly all mineralised veins, relates to all other alteration types and extends from several metres to tens of metres into the wall rocks. Pyrite and galena alteration dominate sulfidation and are associated with some mineralised veins. Pyrite alteration strongly correlates with siderite alteration and exists in three main forms: a) very fine-grained pyrite flooding, which can extend for metres to tens of metres into wall rocks; b) coarse-grained, euhedral pyrite, which is sporadic and associated with the redox boundary in hydrothermally bleached zones; and c) small isolated zones (6 - 15 cm) of medium-grained, subhedral to euhedral pyrite associated with pervasive siderite alteration. Where present, disseminated galena extends for metres to tens of metres into the wall rocks. Silicification is characterised by veins, veinlets, stringers, irregular patches and variable hardness in siltites and commonly appears in association with hydrothermal bleaching and siderite alteration. Although related to mineralisation, silicification is sporadic and in most places a clear envelope around mineralised veins cannot be identified.

"Impedance measurements were used to investigate the electrochemical characteristics of acidic zinc sulphate electrolytes containing Sb3+, gelatin and their mixtures. The data were correlated with cyclic voltammetry curves made using synthetic as well as industrial electrolytes. The cyclic voltammetry results were similar to those obtained in previous studies in that antimony caused a depolarizing effect while gelatin gave an increase in the potential for zinc nucleation on an aluminum substrate.The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (ElS) evaluations were conducted on electrodeposited zinc at three overpotential values. The potentials were chosen to represent various current density regions in the zinc polarization curves. The antimony and gelatin gave characteristic impedance plots which correlated with expected behavior, particularly current efficiency. Both antimony and glue appear to modify the intermediate zinc reaction sequence, but in different ways. The data strongly suggest that film formation and stability are major factors in the zinc ion reduction mechanism.IntroductionThe zinc electrodeposition process is sensitive to the presence of a variety of organic and inorganic chemical species in the electrolyte [I]. Such components can produce either beneficial or harmful effects, depending on their relative concentrations and electrochemical behavior. Extensive investigations have been made to gain a better understanding of the changes occurring during zinc deposition in the presence of such additives. Techniques employed include microscopy, x-ray diffraction, dynamic voitammetry, current imd energy efficiency studies [2-5]. Ultimately, the objectives are to identify the factors which most affect the efficiency of the process and to provide a means to effectively control them.One of the most harmful impurities is antimony, which can be detrimental when present at concentrations as low as 10 to 20 parts per billion. Dramatic changes in zinc polarization behavior, deposition structure and current efficiency have been observed with antimony in the electrolyte. Antimony appears to lower the hydrogen overpotential by hydride formation or a similar catalytic mechanism, which allows an increase in localized corrosion and zinc dissolution [6-8]."

"Since mining in Germany has a long history, there are still many locations where the surface fracture problem has to be solved. Shallow mine workings from an earlier era can affect the surface in a discontinuous way. In many cases, due to light overburden load, those mine rooms did not collapse and a downfall can suddenly happen for many reasons, e.g., in connection with a changed load entry into the subsurface or by additional influence of water. This results in ground movements, which in extreme cases, appear as surface fractures.Depending on the use of the surface, ground movements caused in such a way constitute an endangerment by law. Particularly, within the southern Ruhr district, surface fracture and subsidence endangered ranges are determined on the basis of an empirical method that resulted from a systematic evaluation of surface fractures and rock disclosures. This method indicates maximum ranges within which impacts from abandoned shallow mine workings must be assumed.With a special emphasis on a risk management approach, RWTH Aachen University adapted the model of stochastic media to the conditions of abandoned shallow mining to compute and illustrate potential ground movements due to the collapse of shallow mine workings. Further investigations were concerned with the analysis of characteristic parameters which can serve for the assessment of the surface fracture probability in a comparative view of different cases. In recent years, more than 50 surface fractures in the southern Ruhr district were analyzed in order to develop a risk assessment of surface fracture endangered ranges over shallow mine workings. The results that have been obtained so far are described in this paper.INTRODUCTIONAbandoned underground mine workings of shallow depth can pose a threat to the surface. Due to small overburden rock loads, shallow excavations often remain intact for decades after the operations have ceased and may collapse abruptly (Braemer et al., 2005; Hollmann and Nuerenberg, 1972; Preusse et al., 2007). Several approaches for prognosis of surface fracture resulting from 97 subsurface collapse deal with this topic (Loebel and Sroka, 2001; Tajdus and Sroka, 2009)."

THE Sol de Oro mine is in the province of Nazca, 487 km. southeast of Lima, and 60 km. inland from the coast at an elevation of 1200 m. above sea level. From Lima the mine may be reached in 8 hr. by automobile; 472 km. from Lima to Nazca over the paved Pan-American Highway and 15 km. from Nazca to the mine over a good graveled road. The trip from Lima can also be made in 2 hr. via the Faucett Air Lines which make two stops weekly at Nazca. The [Compania] Aurifera Nazca, owning and operating the Sol de Oro mine, was organized in Lima in 1930 by a group of prominent Peruvian mining men, including Ing. Carlos Alvarez Calderon, Dr. Alfredo Alvarez Calderón, Ing. Hector Boza, Ing. Jorge Félix Remy, Ing. Eulogio Femandini, Sr. Fernando Wiese, and Sr. Julio East. The nine claims in the Sol de Oro group owned by the company comprise an area of 52 square kilometers. Development of the property was not started until 1932 and only then under adverse conditions, owing to lack of transportation facilities. Mining machinery and other supplies could be taken as far as Ica by boat and railroad, but to transport them over the 180 km. of hot, sandy desert from Ica to the mine was a problem. There was no road in those days and only a few of the most venturesome truck drivers cared to contract the hauling. Another problem the company had to face was that of securing adequate labor. The Sol de Oro is in an agricultural region, and was forced to look to the near-by cotton plantations for men. Experienced men were imported from the "sierras," but they did not stay. The men are accustomed to high altitudes and cold climate and cannot easily acclimate themselves to the hot and arid coastal region. As a consequence the company has been forced to hire the inexperienced local laborers and train them for mining. The company has established three separate camps at the Sol de Oro property. Each is approximately one kilometer from the other and connected by auto road. The upper mine camp consists of living quarters for 300 workmen and their families, a general mine office, carpenter shop and timber-framing shed, compressor house, drill-sharpening and drill-repair shop, first-aid station, time office, school and store. At the central or "empleados" camp there is a 200-ton cyanide plant, general offices, warehouse, powerhouse, shops, laboratory, hospital, school, guest house, an 18-room hotel for the single staffmen, and 12 completely modern five-room cottages for the married staff employees. At the lower camp are living quarters for 200 workmen and their families, two general stores, a school and a small theater. Below this camp, along the river, are the company wells and pumping plant supplying water for mine, mill, and camp uses.

The application of large-diameter bore holes in underground operations at Heath Steele was first tried in February, 1975. Since that time, 90,000 feet of 6-l/2-inch holes have been drilled, primarily in open blasthole stoping, for a total of 1.4 million tons, 37% of underground production. This paper deals with a review of drilling with conventional percussion longhole drills, a practice which is still utilized at Heath Steele, and the changeover to accommodate the use of larger blastholes in underground operations. The discussion will include layouts for 2-inch-diameter blasthole stope blocks, 6-inch-diameter stope blocks, trials for I. T.H. (in-the-hole) stope rooms, and drill pat/ems, drilling and performance. The complexity involved in the development, drilling and blasting of 2-inch blastholes is overcome by the over-all simplicity of drilling and blasting in I. T.H. stopes. This has made the practice of open blasthole stoping more economical and efficient. The future indicates an increase in the company's I. T.H. program. Investigations are being undertaken regarding longer holes to decrease development costs. A VCR stope is also being developed for trial.

The following data cover a phase in the systematic testing of gold deposits which does not appear to have been specificalIy investigated.In boring either secondary or primary deposits, gold, by virtue of its high specific gravity, will tend to migrate downward, below the driving shoe or bit, and thus cause misinterpretation of value unless final recovery Can be effected after the hole has been bottomed.Unlike fortuitous and non-recurrent errors, due to, say, running ground, "pile driving" or rock fractures, systematic error due to migration may be unpredict.able from operating data alone, and, therefore, result in serious miscalculation of the weighted average upon which the engineer's recommendation is based.Applied to diamond drilling, loss by downward migration appears to have been largely responsible for distrust of sludge assays in the past. On the other hand, although modern practice rightly trends towards an integration of both core and sludge samples in borehole valuation, the possibility of systematic loss must be investigated when using combination graphs such as those of Longyear, Moehlman and WeIler. If the sludge value is incorrect the combination graphs will serve solely to stultify the core valuation.It appears to be axiomatic that: 1. With full core, sludge assays are of minor import.2. With recovery above 90%, differentjal grinding, of the high grade sections may have occurred, and this c!ln be corrected only by the us.e of cOJ;rect sludge valuation.3. With core recovery less than, say, 70%, no accurate valuation is possible without integrating the sludge assay.4. With less than, say, 10% core recovery, the sludge assay affords the sole basis of evaluating a borehole which may have cost many hundreds of pounds.The conditions demanded for reliable sludge valuation have, in practice, been restricted to high quantitative recovery and return of nearly 90% of the drill water. It is submitted, however, that the following additional knowledge is required:1. The nature of gold distribution in the ore.2. The lifting power of the return water column, which can be gauged by the maximum quartz particle, provided that the degree of "hindrance" can be determined.3. That all gold has been cleared from the bottom of the borehole immediately after it has passed through the orebody.The three cases discussed hereunder are offered not only as proof of the thesis, but also in the hope of promoting discussion on the interpretation of borehole values and on methods for saving free gold in the sludge. The fact that two of them cover alluvial boringand the third diamond drilling has resulted in this attempt to reduce the behaviour of free gold to a basis common to all types of boring.

"In this paper, the results of a research study on airborne dust transport in a full scale simulated longwall face are presented. The simulated longwall face was set up in the Lake Lynn Laboratory mine of the U.S. Bureau of Mines to conduct experiments under controlled conditions. The controlled parameters in the experiments were the dust dispersion rate, dust size distribution, density of the dust, air velocity, and the rate of travel of the dust generating source. The analyses of the experimental results on mass concentrations, particle size distributions, and real-time respirable dust concentrations are discussed. There are definite spatio-temporal trends between the location of the shearer, the concentration at any location in the face, and the dust generation rates. The size-consist and density characteristics of the source dust, the air velocity in the face, and the air leakage into the gobs all affect the concentration. INTRODUCTIONA detailed experimental study on the characteristics of longwall dust cloud in operating longwall faces has been reported by Ramani, Qin, and Jankowski (1991). The study indicated that there are several important factors whose effects on dust transport in longwall faces need to be further investigated. In an operating longwall face, the effect of these parameters could not be easily isolated as control over the affecting parameters is not readily possible. In a simulated longwall face, however, these parameters can be controlled. Therefore, as a follow-up to the field study, a series of controlled experiments were conducted in a full scale simulated longwall face in the Lake Lynn Laboratory mine of the U.S. Bureau of Mines [Qin, 1992]. Specific aspects which were addressed during the experimental design phase included determining the types of samples to be collected, selecting proper instruments to collect these samples, and developing detailed sampling and time-study plans to correlate the dust concentrations with face activities. Two types of dust--anthracite and bituminous--were used. Dust dispersion rate into the air as well as the source dust particle size distribution were documented. Control was exercised over both air velocity at the face and air leakage along the longwall face. During experiments, the dust source was moved to simulate the shearer movement at operating longwall faces. Detailed descriptions of the design of experiments, experimental results, and data analyses follow in the subsequent sections."

"According to the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement Abandoned Mine Land Inventory System, in 2013 there were 98 underground mine fires burning in 9 states. This is considered by experts to be an underestimate for the actual number of fires nationwide. Abandoned mine fires, if left uncontrolled can burn for years and in fact, one of the most well-known mine fires in the US, the mine fire in Centralia, PA, which began in 1962 has been burning for over 55 years. In Centralia, the mine fire won the battle, despite suppression and control efforts, as most of the residents were bought out by the State of Pennsylvania and moved away. However, the world record for the longest-burning coal fire, which may have been started around 6,000 years ago in New South Wales, Australia is still smoldering. Suppressing a coal mine fire requires cooling the hot zones and removing any source of oxygen. If the workings are shallow, the fire zones can be unearthed and the burning rock mass can be quenched on the surface. If the workings are too deep to excavate, then the fire must be fought remotely through boreholes using a variety of agents including water, gas-enhanced foam and grout. Access to surface areas for drilling can be problematic due to topographic and property constraints. When this occurs, large areas of burning may go unaddressed or simply left to burn. Fire Solutions, Inc. has been investigating the use of gas-enhanced foam in concert with directional drilling technology. Gas-enhanced foam has the advantage of using less water and adds inert nitrogen gas to displace oxygen to infiltrate and suppress a fire. Directional drilling has the capability to steer a borehole to a specific place underground. Directional drilling has many advantages over conventional drilling technology as it can provide the least disruption to the ground surface, minimize surface preparation and reclamation costs, multiple sites can be accessed underground from a single site and thus treated simultaneously and it offers increased efficiency because it is not constrained by difficult terrain. This paper discusses the combined use of these two technologies and it is hoped that with the use of these two technologies the efficiency and capability to address mine fires will be significantly improved. INTRODUCTION According to the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement, Abandoned Mine Land Inventory System, in 2013 there were 98 underground mine fires in 9 states. This is considered to be an underestimate for the actual number of fires nationwide. Many mine fires are started by people burning trash where the coal seam or an abandoned coal mine is close to the surface. Other fire ignition sources include lightning and forest fires. Once ignited, a coal mine fire can easily spread into the remaining coal pillars and mine entries. Once established, the fire creates its own ventilation system supporting further combustion by drawing air down into the workings through unsealed mine shafts, fractures and surface subsidence depressions. As the coal left in the workings from the past mining operations burns, the mine void can collapse, causing subsidence and creating dangerous voids, damaging damage overlying surface structures and roadways. The products of combustion include smoke and noxious fumes such as carbon monoxide gas. These products are released to the atmosphere through fractures that develop within the ground surface, killing vegetation and creating serious health hazards [1]."

"TOML’s ISA Contract comprises six areas (A-F) that span from 118° to 152° W and from 7° to 15° N or over 70% of the CCZ.During a 2015 exploration cruise, TOML scientists found that the a logging system developed by ISA (2010) was able to be adapted and enhanced, to describe in some detail the varied morphology of nodules both within the TOML areas and between them.The shapes and sizes of nodules seen were then found to relate to substrate type and setting, and thus likely thickness and long-term stability of the geochemically active layer. Consideration of the various processes that might influence growth helps constrain nodule formation further. The complex system has been developed for long-term assessment of world prices and sale volume of primary aluminium when using the analytical model of the market and market supply forecasts as well as economy development in the Western countries characterized by the industrial production indices as correct data of Western World aluminium consumption are absent, The important part of this system is the model developed for forecasting the degree of capacities utilization of smelters and refineries depending on the price level, The model contains a statistic part corresponding to the capacities distribution by the production cost, and a dynamic part determining the deviation from the static depending on the price variation dynamics, The developed complex system has been identified by the actual data of the world prices of smelter grade alumina and primary aluminium, conservation and reactivation of refineries and smelters in the Western countries within the period from 1992 to 2003. The system was used for primary aluminium and alumina price forecasts till 2020.

G. KUCZYNSKI* and B. H. ALEXANDER*—This paper represents a most noteworthy attempt to evaluate experimentally the surface tension of a solid metal. Because of the great importance of such measurements, any proposed method should receive the closest scrutiny before the results can be considered reliable. In regard to the experimental method, we think that the marking of the gauge length by means of tieing knots in the wire may be the cause of some of the spread in the results. Such a knot may be expected to tighten slightly, and thus increase the gauge length, when placed under stress at high temperature. Although this effect would be very small, amounting at most to only a few times the wire diameter. A fairly tight knot in a wire will decrease the wire length by about ten times the wire diameter, thus only a slight tightening of the knot would cause considerable spread in the results. Upon plotting the stress strain curves from the authors' data, the writers found that there was a fairly consistent tendency towards an S-shaped curve, instead of a straight line. Such an effect could be caused by the tightening of the knots. The writers think, however, that the experimental results are fairly reliable, but that there may be other methods of interpreting them depending upon what mechanism is assumed to be responsible for the shrinkage of the wires. The authors have assumed that the stress due to surface tension results in viscous flow. It should be made clear that it has never been demonstrated that viscous flow can occur in metal crystals even at very high temperatures. The experiments of Chalmers13 on tin, which are so frequently quoted as giving evidence of viscous flow at low stresses are by no means satisfactory. In his experiments, Chalmers found that only the initial rate of flow was approximately proportional to stress. He also found that the rate of flow varied markedly with time which, in his experiments, was less than 2 hr. Inasmuch as there is no proof of viscous flow in metals, and the authors have brought forth no conclusive evidence on this point, it may be worth while to investigate other possible mechanisms of material transport which would account for the shrinkage of the wires. The writers wish to point out that in these experiments the shrinkage of the wires can be adequately explained, according to a self diffusion mechanism. Thus, if we assume a concentration gradient for self diffusion which is a function of the radius of curvature of the wires, and assume that diffusion will occur so that the total surface area is decreased, we find the following expression for the self diffusion coefficient: where k = Boltzmann constant r0 = initial radius of the wire T = absolute temperature ? = surface energy 8 = interatomic spacing t = time e = strain at zero applied stress Eq 19 may be used to evaluate the self diffusion coefficient of copper, using the strain measurements obtained by the authors for zero stress as obtained by extrapolating their curves for 5 rail wires. By inserting a reasonable value for the surface energy (1500 ergs per cm2) we find: -66,000 D = 5 X 10e RT [20] The activation energy is of the correct order of magnitude, but the frequency coefficient is much too high, indicating that surface diffusion may be playing an important role. This discrepancy in the action constant is much smaller than the corresponding discrepancy obtained by the authors for the viscosity coefficient. The writers by no means propose that this proves that the shrinkage of the wires is due to self diffusion but we merely wish to point out that there are explanations other than that given by the authors. In this, as in any kinetic phenomena, it is necessary to study the rate of the process before anything can be said about the mechanism. The determination of surface tension given by the authors is based upon an interpretation of the data which embody the concept of viscous flow. The final proof of this concept will be obtained only after the time relationships confirming the authors' Eq 15 have been conclusively established. The rough linearity of the stress strain curves obtained by the authors for experiments run the same length of time should not be considered as proving that viscous flow is occurring. H. UDIN (authors' reply)—All of the test specimens were annealed at 1000°C for an hour or more before preliminary measurements were made. During this anneal the wires recrystallize, and the greatest part of grain growth takes place. Also, the knots sinter at the cross-over points. This does not in itself eliminate the possibility of end errors, although it greatly decreases their probable magnitude. It is still possible that some extension occurs due to creep in shear at the sintered points. If so, this effect would be quite independent of and superimposed on the normal shrinkage or extension of the wire itself. Within the precision of the experimental results, straight lines satisfy the data as well as do any other simple curves. Until data of greater precision are obtained, it is futile to discuss any possible trends away from linearity. The disagreement between Kuczynski and Alexander's Eq 19 and our Eq 18 is one of semantics and mathematics, not mechanism of flow, since Eq 18 is based on the self-diffusion concept of viscous flow. Since the late 19th Century, scholars have been concerned about finding proper methods of managing business. The search seems to be taking us full-circle to the time and motion studies of Taylor (Horn, 1987). It wasn't until the late 1970's, however, that systematic investigations were made in the mining industry. One of the first was a study by Sanders, Patterson, and Peay (1976). That project explored the relationship of attitudes and safety. Peay, Atkin, and Goodman (1977, then reviewed the whole area of Organizational Development, including the so-called Rushton experiment.

The Sullivan concentrator has completed 20 years of operation. During this period a considerable amount of data has been accumulated concerning the characteristics of several types of flotation machines in their application to the problem of the differential separation of the lead sulphide, zinc sulphide and, in more recent times, iron sulphide, in the ore from the Sullivan mine. It is the author's intention to sketch briefly experiences encountered when the several types of flotation machines were introduced into the flow. Original Flotation Equipment and Ore The original flotation equipment consisted of four 18-cell lead-roughing machines, whose concentrate was cleaned in an 8-cell and recleaned in a similar 8-cell machine. Zinc concentration was carried out in four 18-cell machines. One 8-cell zinc re-treatment machine received the reground zinc middling. The 168 cells handled some 3000 tons of original daily feed. These cells were of the standard Minerals Separation type, equipped with 24-in. impellers. Spindles were driven through geared line shaft at a speed of 255 r.P.m. The impellers were the 45' type, except for the last three cells of the zinc-rougher machines, which were of sub-aeration type, with full bottom shroud and half shroud for the top side of the impellers. Four-pound air was introduced. This recognition of the benefit of intensified flotation operation for "gleaning" was an important phase in the early operation and will be discussed further on in this paper. Sullivan ore during this period is described as a finely disseminated mixture of four sulphides, totaling go per cent made up of 13.6 per cent galena, 14.4 per cent mar-matite, I per cent pyrite and 61 per cent pyrrhotite. The specific gravity of the ore was approximately 4.4. There has been a gradual change in the ore content. The 10 per cent of nonsulphide constituents has increased to between IS and 20 per cent and all three sulphides have dropped somewhat. Added equipment and changing technique have made possible the treatment of 8000 tons per day of mill feed instead of the 3000 originally handled. Special Features of Flotation at Sullivan Sullivan flotation differs greatly from customary practice. The very heavy return of lead rougher middling and lead cleaner tailing, totaling at times 125 per cent of the new feed tonnage, has been the subject of much investigation. The impellers were the 45' type, except for the last three cells of the zinc-rougher machines, which were of sub-aeration type, with full bottom shroud and half shroud for the top side of the impellers. Four-pound air was introduced. This recognition of the benefit of intensified flotation operation for "gleaning" was an important phase in the early operation and will be discussed further on in this paper. Sullivan ore during this period is described as a finely disseminated mixture of four sulphides, totaling go per cent made up of 13.6 per cent galena, 14.4 per cent mar-matite, I per cent pyrite and 61 per cent pyrrhotite. The specific gravity of the ore was approximately 4.4. There has been a gradual change in the ore content. The 10 per cent of nonsulphide constituents has increased to between IS and 20 per cent and all three sulphides have dropped somewhat. Added equipment and changing technique have made possible the treatment of 8000 tons per day of mill feed instead of the 3000 originally handled. A large amount of tailings in concentrators bring a series of problems to the environment and society. It is significant to reclaim the huge tailings and reuse them in industries in order to utilize mineral resources adequately. Primarily Lead-Zinc tailings with a certain quality of clay and feldspar were used to produce ceramic tiles by sintering method under specific technical conditions. By testing the properties of the ceramic tiles, it was shown that the amount of Lead-Zinc tailing used in the tiles was 60%~70%, and the mechanics properties were good. The optimum proportion parameters were Lead-Zinc tailing 60%, clay 35%, feldspar 5%, and the maximum flexural strength of tiles was up to 38.2MPa when it was sintered at 1090? for 30min. Its flexural strength, water absorption and thermal shock resistance reached the State Standard of GB/T4100.4. The product is suitable to be used in pavements and paths of parks.

In an earlier serics of studies on 18-8 stainless steel at 600º, 700º, and 800ºC.l one pretreatment was used throughout; viz., 15 min. in hydrogen at 950°C., followed by an air quench. Several manufacturers of this alloy since have expressed doubt as to the suitability of the temperature employed, recommending instead the more customary Strauss treatment as promising superior results. In this subsequent investigation on the effects of the temperature of pretreatment several interesting points have arisen, which are described in this paper. Previous work on our equipment had shown a marked difference between alloys of "similar chemical composition" that had been manufactured by different companies. Accordingly, one mill-bar length was selected from which to prepare all specimens. It could then be assumed that any marked differences in creep characteristics would be due to effects resulting from variations in the pretreatment of the alloy. The material was furnished by the Allegheny-Ludlum Steel Co. in the form of 5/16-in. dia. rod, finished by air cooling from a mill anneal at 1950°F. (1066°C.). It was analyzed only for the elements shown: carbon, 0.07 per cent; chromium, 18.73; nickel, 9.46; manganese, 0.40. Three pretreating temperatures were chosen, the specimens being held for 15 min. in hydrogen at either: (1) 1150°C., to conform to the recommended Strauss treatment; (2) 950°C., to compare with the results of previous tests; or (3) 75Q°C., to initiate precipitation of carbides in the material before testing. As the test cross sections were only 1/8-in. dia., air cooling followed the annealing treatment. These treatments permitted two direct comparisons: (1) between the 1150" and 950°C. treatments to indicate the effect of grain size when all carbides were probably in solution at the start of the test; and (2) between the 950" and 750°C. treatments to indicate the effect of carbide "nucleation" for similar grain sizes.

Tungsten from the hydrogen reduction of WF was vapor - deposited to coat MERM (Material Evaluation Rocket Motor ) graphite and rhenium- lined graphite nozzles . These nozzles have surface configurations that preclude the conventional fabrication of high- density- tungsten liners . Operation at 550 ° C produced selectively placed uniform coatings of specified thicknesses at near theoretical density . An acceptable coating could not be deposited on a beryllia nozzle because of an undesirable side reaction between the substrate and one or more of the products of the reduction reaction .

"Proper ground stability in gate roads has been a critical aspect of success in longwall mining. In particular, the tailgate has proven to be one of the more active mine areas that needs to be managed (Barczak, Dolinar, and Mucho, 1999). As longwall tailgate support technologies continue to be developed and improved, Strata Worldwide has worked to design and manufacture a revised Propsetter to provide additional support capacity and enable applications at greater mine heights. The support is targeted for tailgate applications; however, it can also be used for roof support in various types of mining environments. This paper describes the design changes for enhancing the support capacity of the Propsetter to more closely align its performance with other support technologies currently being employed in longwall tailgates. Balancing changes to each design aspect of the Propsetter was key to successfully improving the roof support load capacity while maintaining controlled deformation. Increasing the load capacity would allow a mine to improve support efficiency with a smaller, less intrusive support compared to support alternatives and to reduce the cost per foot of supported entry. The target support capacity was 80 to 100 tons at two inches of deformation to more closely match the performance of competing tailgate supports, such as the 24-inch-diameter CAN®. To achieve this goal, changes were made to all design aspects of the Propsetter: diameter, wedge cut depth and angle, pod size, and confinement rings. Test results from the NIOSH Mine Roof Simulator verified that these design changes were successful in increasing the capacity of the Propsetter to the 80- to 100-ton range at two inches of deformation. INTRODUCTION Roof support is one of the most fundamental elements of the underground mining process. As materials are removed from the earth, geological conditions will almost always require some form of roof support to keep the extraction area open and stable. Coal mining environments often experience difficult geological conditions that require both primary and secondary forms of roof support to keep the mining environment safe and economical. The secondary support system serves as additional support in the case the primary support system is inadequate. If designed properly, the secondary support system will also assist in maintaining integrity of the immediate roof beam (Barczak, 2000)."

Flotation separation of galena, sphalerite with pyrrhotite in ethanoic acid + sodium acetate sys-tem was studied in this paper. The flotation tests show that galena and sphalerite can float but pyr-rhotite can hardly float in the pH range of 3.6 to 5.6 in ethanoic acid + sodium acetate system. The flotation tests also show that galena can be separated efficiently from pyrrhotite and sphalerite can be separated on the whole from pyrrhotite, but the separation efficiency of the former is much better than the latter. The flotation results have been investigated by ultraviolet spectrum and XPS analysis, and explained by theory of hard and soft acid and base (HSAB), hydrogen bond and galvanic coupling.
