Drill pipe, and the connections used to join the pipe together, have had a long history of development and improvement. With the growing use of high tensile-strength pipe, the rotary shouldered connections used to join the lengths of drill pipe have become more critical. Fatigue-type failures of rotary-shouldered connections, or tool joints, have become a cause of much conern to operators and manufacturers. Most fatigue tests on tool joints have been made on the basis of bending moment applied vs number of cycles, rather than on the basis of stress vs cycles. A desire to learn more about the nature of stress in a tool joint due to bending caused a rather intensive experimental study to determine what actually happens to cause fatigue failure. It was known that a tool joint with insufficient make-up torque was subject to early fatigue failure. Therefore, the establishment of the relationship between make-up torque and allowable bending moment would enable a testing engineer to better correlate the results of various tests. The problem of calculating the stress in a tool joint due to an applied bending moment was complicated by: the effect of unknown stress concentrations; the applicability of the well known formula S = Mc/I; and the question of whether to use the combined cross section of the pin and box in calculating the moment of inertia I. TEST EQUIPMENT The test equipment consisted of the following. 1. A lathe modified to act as a fatigue machine for full-size tool joint or drill-collar specimens. 2. An adapter plate bolted to the headstock of the lathe and into which a short adapter was screwed. 3. Tool-joint pins on sections of drill collars bucked into the adapter. 4. A hydraulic load cylinder which rested on the bed of the lathe and applied bending moments to the joints. 5. Paper-backed strain gauges (FAP-12-12, 1/8-in. gauge length and A-5-1, 1/2-in. gauge length). 6. Eastman 910 contact cement for bonding gauges to joint and Epoxylite 222 waterproofing. 7. A 12-position switchbox, SR-4 bridge balancing unit connected to an SR-4 strain indicator to read the gauge output. 8. A four-channel Sanborn recorder, Model 150, was used as the readout instrument for part of the testing. The fatigue machine was well suited as a loading device. Because of the long lever arm available, the change of moment with distance was small; consequently, the vertical shear stress was small, less than 300 psi. Some difficulty was experienced with the hydraulic load cylinder at high bending moments due to leakage. The strain gauge equipment was simple and quite reliable. A 41/2-in. extra hole (E. H.) joint with "as machined" threads and shoulders and a 2 7/8-in. internal flush (I. F.) joint with copper-plated threads and shoulders were selected for testing because of their common usage in the field. In addition, the 4 1/2-in. E. H. was suitable because it had an inside diameter large enough to permit the insertion and accurate positioning of strain gauges without using special jigs, while the 2 7/8-in. I. F. joint required much lower bending loads to cause separation of the shoulders of the joint when made up to the recommended torque. Agriculture in the United States today is becoming more and more a business, rather than a way of life. In the light of this, it behooves the farm-supply industries that provide the American farmer with his tools of production--feed, fertilizer, machinery, and the like--to give even greater attention than they have in the past to meeting the needs of the farmer-businessmen they are serving. Increasing competition among the companies that make up these industries merely accentuates this need for better service. An opportunity for such improved service, not yet fully realized, exists in the fertilizer industry today. That opportunity lies in the increased transportation of fertilizer ingredients by water. However, before the benefits inherent in this increased water movement of fertilizers can be fully realized, certain obstacles must be met and overcome. It is the purpose of this paper to outline the nature and magnitude of this opportunity, to point out some of the roadblocks and the steps that can be, or are being, taken to remove them, and to indicate some of the rewards that would logically stem from success in these efforts.

IT as long been recognized that there is a need for accurate systematic data on diffusion in solids. Originally, such data were needed to check existing theories but, more recently, it would appear that it could be used most advantageously as a guide to, or a check for, much needed extensions of the theory of diffusion. The awareness of the conditions which are important to experimental accuracy, the availability of the materials for accurate experiments, and the techniques have improved to the extent that it would now seem to an experimentalist that, unless extensions of the theory are made which take into account the fundamental parameters of the atoms, the electrons, and the lattice in some detail, the field of diffusion will rapidly become an empirical or semi-empirical field. The present series of experiments was designed to provide accurate data on the diffusion of the elements of the IB and IIB subgroups in silver; that is, to provide data on the diffusion in silver of three face-centered-cubic elements with roughly similar chemical properties, but with different atomic or ionic sizes and, similarly, for three noncubic elements. The elements of these two subgroups have different valences, so that the data will not give any significant information on differences due to the crystal structure of the solute. The present paper reports data on the diffusion of copper and mercury in single crystals of silver; the data for the other elements of the IB and IIB subgroups were reported previously by the authors1'2 and by Tomizuka and Slifkin.8 Experiment The general technique used was identical to that previously described1,2 and will not be repeated here. In all cases, the sectioning technique and high specific activity isotopes" were used. The short half-life of Cu64 made decay corrections more important than for the other isotopes, and necessitated around the clock shifts while data were being taken. Each section was counted at least twice (as was true for all longer half-life isotopes) and a monitor was counted along with each sample. Data for the diffusion of mercury in silver are presented at a greater number of temperatures than for the other solutes. This is a result of two circumstances. First, six (of 30) samples had to be discarded because of pitting or recrystallization which occurred during the diffusion runs, even though the samples had sustained high temperature prediffusion anneals. Either of these was a very rare phenomenon in the other experiments, and their occurrence in this case is considered in more detail below. Second, the curves of the logarithm of the activity of the sections vs the square of the penetration deptht were, in general, quite good, but frequently seemed to show one point to have high activity and the next point to have slightly low activity in terms of the best straight line. When this occurred, there was remarkable regularity of the high-low sequence. In any event, the results, as far as diffusion coefficients are concerned, were not affected by this amalgam effect. In fact, the mercury data had the highest internal consistency of any of the data. Results Diffusion of Copper in Silver—-Diffusion runs were made at eight temperatures In the temperature range from 700° to 950°C, for times ranging from 5 to 45 hr. Dynamic soil analysis (DSA) in geotechnical practice is intimately related to the capability of measuring the necessary soil properties of shear modulus and absorption. In DSA the methods of analysis are based upon the stress-deformation response of soils due to imposed shear strains. Typically the soil profile is numerically modeled as linear visco-elastic system. This technique is referred to as the Equivalent Linear (EL) method, and it requires the specification of the input parameters of low-strain (<10-5) shear modulus, modulus reduction, and the equivalent viscous damping ratio, which is directly related to the soil absorption value. Downhole seismic testing (DST) has proven to be a very accurate tool for estimating low strain shear modulus values as long as source wave raypaths are taken into account, especially for near-surface investigations. DST has also been utilized to estimate low-strain interval absorption values. In these cases standard frequency domain absorption estimation algorithms (such as the spectral ratio technique) are utilized where it is assumed that the source waves are traveling along the same travel path, which is obviously not the case for near surface DST investigations. This paper outlines a unique DST absorption estimation methodology, which is carried out in the time domain and takes into account source wave travel paths. 1. INTRODUCTION There is considerable interest in methods of geotechnical in-situ engineering that provide accurate estimates of the shear wave velocity and the associated absorption values in the ground, since these parameters form the core of mathematical theorems to describe the elasticity/plasticity of soils and they are used to predict the soil response (settlement, liquefaction or failure) to imposed loads (whether from foundations, heavy equipment, earthquakes or explosions).

"New insights into the development of microstructure in sol-gel films have recently been revealed by several diagnostic techniques, including imaging ellipsometry, ""chemical imaging"" by fluorescent tracers, light scattering from capillary waves, and finite-element modeling. The evolution of porosity during the continuous transition from dilute sol to porous solid in restricted geometries such as films and fibers is becoming clearer through fundamental understanding of evaporation dynamics and capillarity.IntroductionWith sol-gel processing, the full flexibility of solution chemistry can be exploited to make ceramic films and fibers with well controlled compositional characteristics. No less important is the ability to tune porosity and connectivity for specific applications such as optical and electrical coatings and membranes. Since the chemical and physical factors that determine the microstructure are not entirely understood, new diagnostics applied to sol-gel processing are welcome.Sol-gel films and fibers are distinguished by processing that takes a sol through continuous stages of increasing concentration and connectivity of a solid precursor. The liquid carrier is usually volatile or, at least, volatilizable through heat treatment. During deposition through states of increasing solids concentration, this sol might gel, as in bulk sol-gel processing, however, the gel state may be a fleeting transient that quickly empties of liquid. Nevertheless, the structures formed in solution during this stage influence the structure of the final solid. In particular, porosity is likely to be a remnant of networks formed in the sol-to-gel transition. Here we report on experiments whose goal is to discover the factors involved with porosity development."

A 4-legged jacket structure was installed by an Offshore Installation Contractor (OIC) in the Persian Gulf. In addition to four open-end pipe piles, six conductors were installed by OIC. During the installation of the piles and conductors, some cemented layers were encountered, which had not been accounted for in the foundation design performed by an independent well known offshore geotechnical site investigation contractor (OGSIC). Six months later, the Drilling Company (DC) hired by Client to execute the wells, reported that all of the six conductors were presenting anomalies, such as vertical misalignments up to 10o and/or collapse of the conductors tip and mid height. The DC faced with serious problem in drilling of the wells and in spite of several times milling the conductors and spending 40 days unpredicted extra time, some of the routes could not be opened and Client lost millions of dollars due to direct and indirect associated costs and expenses. This paper presents a complete overview of all engineering, construction and specially geotechnical investigations and shows that how an inaccuracy in interpretations of the results of an offshore geotechnical site investigation as the main reason in this case study can cause serious damages to whole project with unbelievable time and cost impacts some times up to millions of dollars.

Timely and rapid intervention to underground combustion events (fires, explosions, and spontaneous combustion) is the key to the successful control of the mine atmosphere and restoring of a coal mine to production. The focus of this paper is the utilization of a GAG 3A jet engine system to combat either large out-of-control fires or to render an entire mine inert when access to problem areas is difficult or impossible. This system is based upon a Soviet designed agricultural jet engine which consumes aviation fuel with oxygen (O2) from the intake air and exhausts combustion gases, primarily carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O), along with the nitrogen (N2) from the air and small amounts of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H2). The system is designed to approach stoichiometric combustion (ideally, pure burning that scavenges all the oxygen from the intake air). Therefore, these exhaust gases are almost entirely “inert gases”- i.e., gases which do not contribute to, and in fact, can suppress the combustion process due to the lack of oxygen. Other methods to inert mine areas have been used in the US and internationally, but these methods usually use low flow inertisation equipment or methods. Use of these low-flow inertisation equipment and methods has been successful in proactively rendering gob areas inert and has the ability to inert the entire mine workings. "BACKGROUND The Crandall Canyon Mine (CCM) is located in the Wasatch coal field in central Utah. Extensive longwall mining at CCM preceded a decision to recover coal left in barrier pillars on each side of a set of main entries extending far into the mine. During mining in March, 2007, a major bump occurred that led to cessation of mining in the barrier pillar on the north side of the mains and to begin mining in the south barrier pillar. Subsequent loss of ground control in August, 2007, through coal pillar bursts had tragic consequences with loss of six miners and shortly afterwards three rescue team members. An MSHA report describes the events in detail (MSHA, 2008). An important lesson to be learned from CCM is the need to select a computer program suitable for pillar design. Computer programs are engineering tools; selecting the right tool for the job is essential. In this regard, a minimum program requirement is capability for computing stress distribution within a pillar and adjacent roof and floor strata. The reason is simple: strength of rock is stress dependent; both vary from point to point in pillars and adjacent strata. Preferably, one should follow the evolution of stress as the mining plan is executed from start to finish to assure safety or to warn of a potentially hazardous situation developing as mining progresses. The approach to the problem posed by barrier pillar mining at CCM is conventional in the sense of applying well known finite element modeling techniques to analysis of a proposed mining plan. The engineering purpose is to evaluate the mining plan with respect to ground control questions including roof, floor and pillar safety. Results of previous two dimensional finite element analysis indicated pillar safety was by no means assured (1, 2, 3). Geometry of barrier pillar mining is limited in two-dimensions, for example, crosscuts are not seen in vertical cross sections. While three dimensional analyses are preferred, even moderately sized regions often lead to very large problem sizes that exceed computer capabilities. However, a recent development in finite element modeling of tabular deposits allows for whole mine analysis in three-dimensions. This technique involves a dual node – dual mesh concept. Both have been used separately in much earlier work, but are only now are used in combination. Estimation of subsidence at a kilometer scale and details of stress, strain and displacement about barrier pillars, main entries and pillars, and so on at a meter scale are possible (4). No compromise involving empirical formulas or similar guess work is required. Indeed, all calculations are based on first principles: physical laws, kinematics, and material laws. Effects of joints and in situ variability or uncertainty in strata properties, elastic moduli and strengths, may be included for greater realism. An important objective of the present study is to assess the role of three-dimensional pillar geometry in arriving at conclusions regarding barrier pillar mining versus two-dimensional results."

The mining industry is facing tremendous economic challenges. Fluctuating and depressed commodity prices, the ever-increasing pressure from environmental legislation and the competing global opportunities for capital investment are placing enormous strains on every aspect of the mining business. At the same time, mines are generally becoming older and deeper with all the logistical and rock mechanics difficulties that this entails. In the face of these new challenges the industry looks to technological advances to make operations more efficient and profitable. One approach is to develop and implement highly automated and computerised equipment as part of a trend towards major reductions in the underground workforce. This approach requires more capital investment rather than less and requires a more sophisticated and well-educated workforce with skills which are generally in high demand in society as a whole. It is difficult to see how the benefit that can be gained from such technology can justify the expenditures necessary to make it operate reliably underground on a daily basis. Nor is it easy to foresee how the mining industry, based as it is often in very remote areas, will be able to hire and retain sufficient numbers of people to maintain such fleets of equipment. Another approach, and the one which I favour, is the implementation of much greater control over the whole of the mining process. Mining is essentially a very simple process - we break rock and move it. The most cost-effective means of moving and processing the mining product depends entirely on the way it is broken - it depends on primary fragmentation by blasting. I propose that the way forward for the industry in the face of our present difficulties, is not new technology but is to utilise the level of technology which currently exists in ways which have traditionally been regarded as too difficult or too inflexible - improved fragmentation and the use of conveyors. The technical success of this approach depends on the complete re-design of the ore handling system from the face or stope drawpoint to surface. The fundamental issue which determines the success of this approach is designed fragmentation.

Competition in the gold mining industry throughout the world has become fierce in recent years. The challenge facing operations personnel is to produce more gold for less money. Likewise, the explorationist&apos;s charge is to find more gold in a more cost-efficient manner. That means using new technology to find new gold deposits and expand present ones. More accurate mapping instruments are available to geologists in the search for new deposits. Advanced geophysical and geochemical methods enable explo¬ration teams to review previously mined districts in their search for minable reserves. Four technical sessions on the geology, exploration, and development of gold deposits were part of the program at `world Gold &apos;89,&apos; a Gold Forum on Technology and Practices," held by SME and The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in Reno, NV, Nov. 5-8, 1989.

Recently high-resolution paleomagnetic age determination of ferromanganese crust in less than millimeter scale has been successfully carried out using a superconducting quantum interference device microscopy magnetometer (SMM). However, it has not been clearly identified how the crust is keeping ancient geomagnetic field records. Here we try to identify magnetic mineralogy of the crust obtained in the Magellan Seamounts, the West Pacific (~20 °N). As a record, age of the crust used in this study is extended to ~10 Ma at ~40 mm depth and ~28 Ma at ~100 mm depth, respectively, based on the combination approach of SMM measurements, Be-isotope and Co-chronology. Thermal demagnetization revealed a Curie temperature of ~560oC, corresponding to (titano)magnetite. Component analysis of isothermal remanent magnetization identified a presence of two types of magnetite. Measurements of first order reverse curve showed a dominance of non-interacting single-domain magnetite, which is one of the intrinsic feature of biogenic magnetite. Although most of the magnetic particles on transmitted electron microscopy are covered by amorphous Fe-Mn minerals, some are observed as a prototype of biogenic magnetite showing a chain of ~10 nm sized magnetite cubes. However, a magnetite signal (i.e., Verway transition at ~ –120 oC) was not detected in low-temperature treatment probably due to surface oxidation of magnetite. Contribution of interacting magnetite of detrital origin is <30% throughout a crust. Interestingly, contribution of detrital magnetite is almost three times higher since ~10 Ma. At this boundary, a growth rate of the crust is double up and flux of other detrital signals, including Al, Mg, Ti and Zr, are also increased.

"INTRODUCTION During the first phases of the war emergency the shortage of aluminum prompoted the Bureau of Mines to investigate methods for using low-grade bauxites of high silica content and also clays as raw-material sources of this strategic metal. The Bayer process treats low-silica bauxites to provide the industry with a major portion of the purified alumina, which contains very low percentages of silica and other impurities. One of the methods investigated in the laboratories of the Bureau of Mines for low-grade materials is the lime-soda sinter process, which was studied on a pilot-plant scale. In this process, the alumina content of the alumina-bearing minerals Bs made water-soluble by sintering the raw material with limestone and soda. Simultaneously, the siliceous material is rendered insoluble. The sinter is extracted with an alkaline liquor, and the resulting extract liquor is treated as follows to recover the alumina: (1) Autoclaving with lime to remove silica as a zeolitic complex and (2) treatment with CO2 to precipitate alumina as the trihydrate (A1203.3H20). Figure 1 is schematic flow sheet of this process.As the process is cyclic, it is necessary that nearly all of the soda and alumina remaining in the plant liquors after carbonation be recovered. Upon passing through one cycle, these liquors contain 14 to 15 percent NaCO3 2 to 5 percent NaOH, 1 to 3 percent A1203, minor amounts of silica, and, with certain materials such as Pennsylvania diasporic clays, 0.5 to 1.0 percent Na2S04. Approximately 50 percent of the Na20 in these liquors must be returned, as soda ash, to the dry-grinding and raw-materials blending operations. Previous work (6)5/ on sulfate-free solutions demonstrated that two methods for recovering Na20 were feasible, namely: (1) Salting out Na2C03.H20 by evaporation of the carbonated solutions and (2) crystallizing Na2C03.10H20 by cooling the concentrated carbonated solutions."

"The Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) were successfully synthesized by applying a combination of ionothermal synthesis and microwave energies for rapid synthesis. The synthesis was proceeded under various conditions including different raw materials, reaction temperature as well as microwave irradiation time. Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), also known as coordination polymers, are new type of porous materials formed by inerratic polyhedral in three-dimensional. They are the ideal crystalline substances for gas separation and storage. The assynthesized samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and C02 adsorption test. Results illustrated that the synthesized samples had stable structure, high thermal stability (up to 530 °C) and C02 adsorption capacity (10.2 cm3/g at 0°C under ambient pressure). This novel method also showed great advantage with high energy efficiency, safe synthesis conditions, and rapid crystallization time (60 minutes).IntroductionNowadays, carbon dioxide capture has become imperative due to the global warming caused by the increase of C02 in the atmosphere, especially produced by the concentrated sources such as power plants [1]. Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), also known as coordination polymers, are ideal crystalline substances for gas separation and storage due to their structure diversity, high thermal and chemical stability [2-5]. They are formed by inerratic polyhedra in threedimensional with large cages and small apertures. Traditionally, ZIFs are synthesized by solvothermal method in a sealed autoclave under autogenous pressure [6-9]. However, in order to generate the products, the solvothermal temperature should not be lower than 100°C according to the sovlothermal mechanism. Moreover, at such a temperature, molecules with a low boiling point (such as water) may generate high pressure in reactor which might cause danger [9]. Thus the synthesis requires the equipment to possess resistance to autogenous pressure and corrosion. Further, conventional solvothermal methods need a long time to prepare products, usually a few days, which is a large energy consumption and inefficiency. So it is interesting to synthesis ZIFs through other ways under mild reaction condition with high energy efficiency."

The economics of “Conventional” and “Advanced Fine Coal Cleaning” (AFCC) circuits for refuse pond reclamation as well as active mine/preparation plant applications have been evaluated. The benefits of innovative tailings management schemes on the profitability of mining enterprises have also been evaluated as a part of this study. Analyses have been conducted for scenarios involving generation of two different product qualities of 5.81%, a quality that was obtained during AFCC circuit operation at SIU, and a more typical 8% product ash. The inability of the conventional circuits to achieve profitability while producing the lower ash content product is revealed from this approach. The spiral-only circuit is unable to produce a 5.81% ash product. A different version of the same circuit involving spirals and column flotation produced the desired product quality but could not maintain profitability. The AFCC circuits on the other hand, achieve net present values greater than $6 million, with return on investment in excess of 50%, in the water-only as well as dense medium mode, with and without tailings management. Addition of tailings management system to any of the circuits is found to enhance the project economics. The comparison of water-only and dense-medium applications of the AFCC circuits indicate a better suitability of the dense-medium circuit for producing premium quality products. Application of AFCC circuits in active mines offer better economics compared to applications in refuse pond recovery operations. The superior project economics are a result of reduced overhead cost and use of existing material handling facilities. Sensitivity analysis reveals the significance of capacity utilization on project economics.

"Tires, although not always the largest single cost item in open-pit mining operations, will place in the top three, along with explosives and fuel. How this high-cost supply is controlled is dependent upon on an efficient tire program. The success of this program is, in turn, dependent upon the people who are directly associated with tires and their use, namely: the mine&apos;s tire personnel, the tire sales representatives and a technician for the rubber company. The technician will relay his observations and information received from the mine personnel back to the manufacturer with recommendations to overcome current problems .Haulage truck tire life and costs in a hard rock open-pit mine are governed and controlled by four important factors:I) Field control.2) Operating within manufacturer&apos;s guidelines.3) Different tire purchasing methods.4) Scrap piles.Field ControlPerhaps the most influential people involved in this program are those who live with the tire through every hour of its lifespan: the truck driver, the shovel operator, the dozer operator, the grader operator and the shift boss. Of these, the truck driver has the most control, in that he can drive over or around rock s as these situations arise. The loading area, the edge of the haul road and the dump account for most of the tire injuries.This is why shovel, dozer and grader operators must appreciate their influence on haulage tire life. Spillage cleanup must be ongoing and is not being done adequately if any of these operators are idle. The shift boss that drives by a rock on the road without removing it or calling for a cleanup has little recourse with the truck driver who runs over it-he has sanctioned the driver&apos;s actions by his own neglect."

Microseismic monitoring and evaluation is one aspect of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) research program. Roof falls are often preceded by a period of elevated microseismic activity, but not all periods of elevated activity result in a roof fall, nor do all roof falls occur after some amount of elevated activity. The objective of this study is to review periods of elevated microseismic activity and determine whether fracture activity rate can be used to anticipate the initiation of roof falls. The study was carried out at an underground limestone mine where major roof falls are associated with excessive horizontal stress. The progression of roof falls was detected by the microseismic signature produced by the rock falling from the mine roof onto the mine floor, which is termed a roof fall impact event. A total of nine elevated fracture activity periods that resulted in seven major roof falls were examined. It was observed that elevated fracture activity preceded the initial roof fall impact event in three out of four major roof falls. The initial impact event was not identified for the remaining three roof falls. Fracture event rates were analyzed and a roof fall alarm trigger of five fracture events in a ten minute time period was established for this test case. The fall alarm trigger was tested against six of the elevated activity periods. Four roof falls occurred in the six periods of elevated activity, and two would have triggered the alarm before the roof fall occurred, while two false alarms were generated. The results show that limited success would have been achieved by the microseismic system as a roof fall alarm trigger. However, the trigger would have been successful at warning of the onset of elevated activity, allowing mine employees to respond appropriately. The study highlighted some issues with implementing such a system in an operating mine, including the need for real time identification of fracture related microseismic signals among mining induced signals, and accurate location and identification of fracture clustering.

ALTHOUGH confident of its ability to meet any demands which may be made, the petroleum refining industry is not complacent about the situation and realizes that the quantities of petroleum products to be furnished are so enormous and so far beyond what was previously estimated that the full co-operative effort of the industry must be exerted. Establishment by the President in May of the Office of Petroleum Coordinator for Defense with Secretary of the Interior Ickes at its head, plus the formation of the Petroleum Industry Council for Defense, in November, provide the channels for united endeavor within the industry and the means for gearing that endeavor within the industry and the means for gearing that endeavor in full harmony with the nation?s needs. Great strides have been made and a rapid understanding of the situation and the magnitude of the task is being attained by all concerned.
