This paper will discuss an application of multivariate discriminant analysis to aid in predicting mineral potential from regional geological data and information on mineral deposits, with particular emphasis on the use of the logistic discriminant function. Logistic discriminant analysis is a generalization of standard discriminant analysis in that the discriminant analysis becomes applicable under a much wider class of distributions. As a practical example, the standard multiple discriminant analysis and the logistic discriminant analysis are applied to data from the Bathurst area in the Appalachian region of Canada and the results are compared with one another.

Iron control and iron residue management and disposal are significant issues in all zinc production processes. This paper briefly reviews the most important primary zinc production routes and discusses the challenges posed by iron control in each of them. The technologies and strategies that have proven successful in controlling and managing iron are discussed. SNC-Lavalin's experience in designing and commissioning zinc plants provides a unique perspective from which to review this aspect of zinc production.

"Specimens of the ultra-low carbon bake hardening steel were soaked for 1 min to 5 min, and then cooled by water quenching. The internal friction experiments were carried out to detect the spectra of the specimens. Results show that Snoek peaks are present in all the specimens, however, an obvious Snoek-Koster peak is found only in the 5 min-annealed specimen. Besides, tensile results indicate that the bake hardening values increase with the annealing time prolonging from 1 min to 3 min, but decrease as the annealing time prolongs further to 5 min. The solute distributions in the specimens were characterized by three dimensional atom probe. Some segregated C and V are found in the 1 min-annealed specimen, and the C and V contents decrease as annealing time prolongs to 5 min.1. IntroductionAs an excellent member of automotive body panel materials, various types of bake hardening (BH) steels have been developed since 1980s. Bake hardening property, as one of the most important mechanical properties, has been studied by many researchers [ 1-5]. As is known, BH phenomenon is generally controlled by the interaction between solute C and dislocations. The Snoek peak of internal friction (IF) is very popular in the investigation of solute C [6-9]. However, result of internal friction cannot suggest the distribution pattern of solute C as well as its influence on BH phenomenon.Three dimensional atom probe (3DAP) can diagnose solute element atoms as well as nano-sized precipitates, and it is the only instrument that currently can identify the identities of individual atoms in a material and measure their spatial coordinates with the resolution close to 0.3 nm [10]. There have been a number of studies about using 3DAP to detect solute elements as well as nanometer sized precipitates [11-19]. For example, Hono et al. [16] used 3DAP to determine the solute elements in an age-hardened Mg-Ca-Zn alloy, and they also obtained the distribution patterns of the observed elements."

Mintek developed the MinataurTM leach-solvent extraction-precipitation technology as a cost effective, easily operated alternative to conventional gold refining processes. The technology was first commercialized at the Harmony Gold Refinery in 1997 to produce 99.99 per cent gold product and has subsequently led to development of various value-addition steps including the casting of various investment bars, gold wire drawing and gold potassium cyanide powder production. In addition to refining gold to high purity, if an appreciable amount of silver is present in the feed material it is also refined to 99.99 per cent purity. The major advantage that the Minataur? technology has over other gold refining processes is the relatively low gold lock-up and reduced operating costs. The operating cost1as at April 2001 for the expanded Harmony refinery (24-ton per annum gold production) was approximately half that of conventional smelting and toll refining. The extractant employed for solvent extraction is relatively cheap and highly selective for gold, making the technology attractive in situations where significant quantities of platinum group metals or base metals are present.

THOSE actively interested in mining are fully aware of the ever-increasing difficulty of making conditions such that efficient work can be clone in underground openings, especially as higher rock temperatures are encountered in depth. This is also true where an effort is being made to cut down the burden of overhead expense by working headings 24 hr. in a day if blasting is done as often as is possible in that time. That the conditions resulting from both these causes have driven the native-born Americans from the mines and that their places have been taken by less efficient foreigners is a fact that we must all admit. The great war now being fought in Europe and the educational qualification clause written into our immigration law by the last Congress will probably limit very materially the supply of labor, such as we are now using in our mines, and will force upon mine operators the necessity of making this work appeal again to Americans. Metal tubing, with blower or exhaust fans, has long been used in supplying air to dead ends where natural ventilation is impossible, or in driving the smoke from such places, or in doing both, as the need might be. Here in Butte we have now come to use canvas tubing very extensively and find that it has many advantages not possessed by the metal. The use of flexible tubing is not new, but it has not been generally used in mining operations. Recent improvements, however, in the canvas itself and in the jointing of sections and manner of suspension have so increased its usefulness that it promises to add much to the efficiency of mining. There is now on the market a product that is impervious to air, is fireproof, and has a system of jointing which, permits it to be put up or taken clown in a few seconds. In this article an effort will be made to explain the manner in which canvas tubing is being used in the North Butte company's operations at Butte, Mont. The accompanying photographs will, I hope, help make clear what may be done with this material.

"Developments in understanding the brittle fracture of rock over the past two decades ultimately led to the acceptance of a cohesion-weakening-friction-strengthening model as an appropriate strategy for the modelling of spalling using a continuum approach. This strength model has been used to replicate observed failure depths and geometries for a number of case studies in the literature, most notably the AECL Underground Research Laboratory in Manitoba. One thing which these case studies typically ignore, however, is the influence of rock dilatancy on the evolution of brittle failure. Physically, this phenomenon is the volumetric expansion of the rock due to fracture opening; numerically, this phenomenon is captured by the flow rule, which is often characterized by the dilation angle, ?. Accurately modelling rock dilatancy in conjunction with strength evolution is necessary both to predict the magnitude and distribution of ground displacements, as well as the exact depth and shape of the fracturing zone. Both of these factors can have significant implications for support design. This paper is focussed on presenting some of the recent developments in this field in the context of a number of numerical modelling case studies. Initially, a new model for the dilatancy of brittle rock is presented, as well as some representative data and model parameters for different rock types. Next, several case studies of highly stressed tunnels and shafts are presented. The results of continuum numerical models are presented to demonstrate the ability of the back analyses to match observed in-situ measurements and obtained. The predictive capabilities of the material model are also highlighted for cases where sufficient “a priori” information (such as laboratory compression testing data) are available. The issues of model nonuniqueness and strain-localization/bifurcation are also addressed."

"In mineral comminution circuits, the feed to hydrocyclone consists of a heterogeneous mixture having varied degrees of liberation and sizes leading to the multi-component particle system. The presence of multicomponent particles exhibits a significant change in the classification performance parameters. In this work, a numerical study is conducted with an artificial mixture of magnetite and silica of different proportions having similar particle size distribution to understand the multicomponent interaction in a laboratory scale hydrocyclone. The heterogeneous feed is injected tangentially would attain different settling rates under the influence of centrifugal, drag and turbulent dispersion forces. In this work, Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is used to resolve the continuous phase turbulence. Modified Algebraic Slip Mixture (ASM) model using the corrected Newtonian rheology of fines to simulate multi-density and multi-size particles of the mixture in a hydrocyclone. The influence of the multi-component particles on classification performance is extracted from the simulation in terms of the performance curve, i.e. recovery to underflow, volume fraction distribution and the key forces acting on each particle in the mixture. An interaction was observed between different components during the classification process, featuring accumulation of heavier particle at wall-side pushing the lighter particles into the inner locus of zero vertical velocity (LZVV) zone. The comparison of separation factors of different size particles presented the higher probability of the magnetite of same size reporting to wall region and hence to underflow. Hence, an increased component cut-size with the increased magnetite proportion, particularly a profound effect on lighter density component’s cut-size was observed. INTRODUCTION The multicomponent existence is found in naturally occurring ores, affecting the pure metal extraction, nonetheless also affects the comminution and classification processes. Among many another classifier, hydrocyclone is a vital equipment used vastly in many industries. The main advantages over other classifiers are a static body, low operating cost and maintenance, high throughput, low floor space requirement etc. A typical hydrocyclone consists of a cylindrical section with a central tube connected to a conical section with a discharge tube. The fluid is injected tangentially into hydrocyclone causes swirling and thus generates centrifugal force within the device. The multiphase interaction inside the hydrocyclone is extremely complex and mostly explained by theories based on hypothesis. In past years, many theoretical models were proposed like a balanced orbital model (Criner, 1950), the residence time model (Reitema, 1961) etc. Though these models give an estimation of the cut-size and other performance parameters, it cannot predict the accurate performance of the actual state of operation. Among these models, the balanced orbital theory is the most adapted concept, based on the force balances of the particle in the dual vortex flow of hydrocyclone. The finer particle is subjected to the inward drag force, generated from the outer vortex flow to the air core, and drags the particle towards the overflow. The larger particle with the higher mass have enhanced centrifugal force and falls into primary vortex near wall reporting to the underflow. Generally, the forces acting on the particle include the drag force, centrifugal force, pressure gradient force, added mass force, Saffman lift force, Magnus force and basset force (Kraipech, 2005). The major forces like a drag, centrifugal, pressure gradient are the function of the particle properties like the size and the density. Hence, the existence of the multi-size and the multi-density particle will affect the separation phenomenon, with the varied forces acting on it. "Although Canada has achieved one of the highest living standards in the world, people and organizations have, over the past decade, begun to question the cost and means of this achievement. Concern has been expressed about the degree of environmental disturbance arising from industrial activities which have greatly contributed to our increased living standards. These industries include hardrock mining, pit and quarry operations, hydro-electric schemes, various agricultural enterprises and urban land developments.In the construction and operation of the above industries many environmental problems arise because the natural vegetative land cover is destroyed or drastically disturbed. Disturbance may occur to such a degree that revegetation is di ffi cult, often it appears impossible. Portions of the environment around such industries remain aesthetically unacceptable and appear to offer little or no potential for future resource use in wildlife, recreation or agriculture.The general public cannot dissociate itself from the activities of the aforementioned industries. It has, over many years, accepted the benefits and conveniences arising from those activities. Despite this, the increasing level of public concern imposes upon industry a need to alleviate or repair past, present and future environmental disturbance. Therefore it is incumbent upon industry to modify present technology or develop new techniques which would allow the disturbed environment to be easily and rapidly repaired."

LABORATORY research has been started at the Bureau of Mines Morgantown Petroleum Research Laboratory, Morgantown, Va., to investigate the possibilities thermal-recovery methods for producing crude oils of high API gravity found in oil reservoirs of the eastern United States. This bibliography on thermal methods of oil recovery was compiled as a part of the work. Crude oil discoveries to December 31, 1958, in the United States were estimated to exceed 270 billion barrels. Cumulative production of crude oil through 19.55 was about 60 billion barrels, and the American Petroleum Institute estimates that an additional 30.5 billion barrels are economically recoverable by present methods. On this basis, about two-thirds of the oil that has already been found can be classified as economically unrecoverable for lack of a satisfactory method. The rap icily rising costs of proving new deposit; of domestic petroleum, the lack of new discoveries of large oilfields in the united States, and I he growing demand for crude oil have caused an acceleration of research to develop new or improved methods fur producing "unrecoverable" oil in known reservoirs.

"MINING is one of Canada's most important industries and exploration is the life-blood of this dynamic and exciting business. The health and growth of the mining industry of tomorrow depends on the effort and thought that go into exploration today. The Members of the Geology Division of the C.I.M. are directly concerned with exploration, and it is fitting that this Division should periodically sponsor reviews of the thoughts and practices of the exploration com-munity. Accordingly, we have invited seven leading authorities to contribute papers dealing with specialized aspects of this field.Exploration is a science, or art if you will, that is constantly changing in keeping with our expanding knowledge of geology and technology. It started with the old-time prospectors who searched the wilds for exposures of ore, and made finds that developed into some of our most important mining camps. As more discoveries were made, they were able to relate certain types of deposits with particular geological conditions, laying the foundation for modern concepts of economic geology. The mapping by the early field parties lacked detail and usually served to outline the ""greenstone"" areas considered favourable for prospecting. More de-tailed studies through the years by government and company geologists led to new thoughts on the origin, emplacement and geological control of orebodies. The continuing diversity of opinion on these subjects indicates a need for further research, but each year sees an increase in our reserves of factual information."

El siguiente estudio describe la relación del proceso de electrificación de empresas eléctricas asociadas (Lima, Arequipa), con la minería y la industria azucarera. De los tres campos mencionados, es la minería, la actividad que ha contribuido mayormente al proceso de desarrollo eléctrico (30%), y con el 50% en su aprovechamiento de potencial hidroeléctrico. Asimismo, las necesidades de electricidad para la producción de cobre, zinc y plomo son de 1, 800, 4600 y 450 Kw. -hr. por tonelada de mineral en las minerías del país, Cerro de Pasco y Junin, revelando un espacio de reserva de 600, 000 kw hasta el año de 1975. En este sentido, el proyecto hidroeléctrico del Mantaro, se considera como el sistema eléctrico más idóneo dentro del Plan de Electrificación Nacional, cuya producción alcanza 513,000 Kw. para la ciudad de Lima -en tanto fines de prestación de servicios púlblicos-, y se interconecta posteriormente con la costa norte del Perú. En consecuencia, la ejecución de esta primera etapa del Mantaro, permite alimentar al yacimiento minero de Cerro de Pasco, y al 90% de las minas de los departamentos de Junín, Pasco y Lima.

The foundation of effective leadership is communication. You can have all the leadership theories, models and training you want, but in the end it is all about leaders talking to, listening to and understanding the point of view of those below and above them.The foundation of effective safety is peoples’ behaviours. Every incident, every near miss and every safe act comes down to what one person does and how that affects themselves and others. We tend to focus these behavioural considerations on the people at the ‘coal face’, those most in harm’s way. But it is the individual behaviours of everyone in the organisation, particularly those at the top, which are just as (if not more) important. The foundation of effective safety leadership in the mining industry is that it starts at the top, with the individual behaviours of leaders. The behaviours of each and every leader will be reflected in their teams. And where their teams are made up of leaders, these leaders will pass these behaviours on to their teams and so on. It’s the sum total of what people see their leaders do and what they do as a result, that creates the ‘culture’ of the business – and it’s this culture that makes or breaks how safely people work.

High temperature mechanical properties of 50Cr5MoV roll steel was investigated by Gleeble 1500 thermal simulator testing machine The morphology, composition and microstructure of fracture surface were observed and analyzed by OM, SEM and EDS The results are indicative of that, there are two brittle temperature zones of 50Cr5MoV roll steel at the temperature of 600°C~950°C and 1300°C~1450°C, respectively. The section shrinkage rate is less than 60% The fracture mode changes from mixed ones dominated by intergranular to toughness transgranular one with the increase of temperature at the range of 650°C~1300°C. The fracture is along the solid--liquid phase at the range of 1300°C~ melting point It is crucial to formulate the 50Cr5MoV casting technology, to prevent the cracks and improve the quality of 50Cr5MoV roll steel.

"Lead-containing wastes processed at the IMN’s Division in Legnica originate mainly from dry and wet dedusting installations of the technological lines for copper production. These are lead dusts and lead-zinc dusts characterised by the specific properties resulting from the chemical composition of the Polish copper concentrates. Besides lead, they contain many accompanying metals and impurities such as zinc, copper, sulfur, chlorine, potassium, sodium, and also bituminous substances. Processing of lead-containing dusts is conducted in the installations of rotary-rocking furnaces heated with gas-oxygen burners fitted with auxiliary systems for cleaning process gases and refining re-circulating dusts. The processing technology utilizes innovative process and technical solutions enabling disposal of lead-containing wastes from copper metallurgy and from non-ferrous metals industry according to the BAT recommendations and to the guidelines specified in integrated permission. In this paper, the main technological aspects of processing lead-containing dusts at the IMN’s Division in Legnica have been presented.IntroductionCrude lead is obtained in Polish lead metallurgy from various primary and secondary materials, such as Zn-Pb concentrates, lead-bearing dusts of copper metallurgy and battery scrap. In zinc smelter Miasteczko Slaskie S.A. crude lead is produced from sulfide and oxide Pb-Zn concentrates in ISP process. Orzel Bialy S.A. and Baterpol Ltd. produce crude lead in short rotary furnaces in the process of smelting products of mechanical battery scrap separation– desulfurised or not desulfurised paste and metallic fraction. KGHM Polska Miedz S.A. and IMN Divison in Legnica produce crude lead in rotary furnaces in the process of smelting of polymetallic dusts and slimes from copper production processes."

Even as the rational selection of excavation equipment requires a matching of machine performance capabilities to rock response characteristics, the functional features of transportation systems must be matched to the characteristics of the materials handled in order to secure optimum, trouble-free operation. In particular, ore passes and chutes must be designed for flow in order to insure controlled draw whenever a chute is opened. The alternative to quantitative design is, of course, the well known ad hoc procedure of freeing plugged ore passes, cleaning up spillage from flooded chutes, etc., after installation of the system. Since the voluminous empirical work sporadically undertaken through the years evidently had not led to reliable design methodology, it seemed worthwhile to attempt a rational and complete description of the movement of material through ore passes. The concepts of de- formable body mechanics applicable to gravity-induced flows of granular media or "soils" were involved. Accordingly, the mathematical theory of soil plasticity was adopted as a working hypothesis, and a two-dimensional laboratory model of an ore pass constructed in order to investigate the appropriateness of the theory. The general experimental strategy consisted of formulating the movement of material in ore passes as a boundary value problem in soil plasticity, determining the required boundary values of stress and velocity experimentally, and then using these data for the initiation of a theoretical solution for stress and velocity throughout the moving mass of material. A comparison between the theoretical and experimental constituted the test of the original hypothesis.

EDWIN W. KEMMERER, professor of international finance at Princeton, in a speech before a banking conference at Urbana, Ill., on Nov. 26, stated that the increase in the store of gold held by the United States is not so alarming as it appears on the surface. Excerpts from his address, as reported by The New York Times, follow: "It is significant . . . that the value of gold as expressed in its purchasing power in the United States during the last half-dozen years has been higher than at any other equivalent period since our records began 140 years ago. Our so-called 59-cent dollar today buys about 25 per cent more goods at wholesale than did our old dollar in the prosperous year 1926, and an ounce of gold will now buy considerably more than twice what it did then. This present high value of gold is one reason for its recent large production.

ThIS reports on some work done on the solubility and diffusivity of oxygen in liquid silver. Solubility. Improvements in the measurement of the solubility of oxygen in silver and silver alloys were made because precise data were needed for calculating diffusion coefficients of oxygen in these alloys. The apparatus and the procedure used were similar to those of Parlee and Sacris.' The main improvement was in the temperature-measuring technique. A MV30 mullite protection tube containing a calibrated Pt-Pt, 10 pct Rh thermocouple was inserted in the reaction tube from the top through a vacuum-tight swage-lok fitting. The protection tube was well-immersed in the liquid silver, which was heated by induction. A Leeds and Northrup potentiometer was used in connection with the thermocouple. All runs reported were made at 1 atm. The temperature range investigated varied from 940" to 1200°C. The ternary point in Ag-0 phase diagram2 is at 939°C and 0.32 wt pct O. This point was reinvestigated using the above-described apparatus and was found to be at 939°C and 0.315 wt pct 0. It was determined by observing the sudden evolution of oxygen at this point while the solubility measurements were made. The point was easily reproducible if precautions were taken to keep the liquid silver essentially in equilibrium with oxygen and to lower the temperature very slowly. All of the results of this new solubility investigation are plotted in Fig. 1. They are represented by the "least-squares" line shown in the figure and the following equation for solubility at po2 = 1 atm: log% O =695.4/T - 1.086 This equation differs only slightly from that proposed by Parlee and sacrisl and that of Diaz, Masson, and Richardson.3 The points of Parlee and Sacris, using an optical pyrometer, are shown for comparison.

THE orebody described below has been rediscovered and developed within the last 3 years. It has, however, been known and worked by the Chinese for hundreds of years. When assay values and size are considered, it contains what is probably one of the largest single bodies of zinc and lead sulphides yet found. The tonnages developed at other places, as at Broken Hill, are much greater but the average zinc and lead sulphide contents are considerably lower than at Bawdwin. Bawdwin is situated in the semi-independent State of Tawng Peng, one of the numerous units which make up the Northern Shan States. These States are under British rule and are generally considered as a portion of Burma. They are governed as a separate administrative unit, however, under the Lieutenant Governor of Burma. Each State is under its own chief, or Sawbwa, who has considerable power over his own subjects. Bawdwin is approximately in latitude N 23°6', longitude E 97°20', about 50 miles south of the nearest point on the Chinese border and 450 miles north of Rangoon (Fig. 1). The period at which mining was first begun at Bawdwin is unknown. The most reliable records have been obtained by deciphering local Chinese inscriptions and from these it is concluded that the work dates back to at least the beginning of the 15th century. The first undoubted reference to the mines by a European is by Symes in 1795. Crawford in 1827 estimated the output of silver from the mines at $600,000 annually. At about the middle of the 19th century the rebellion of the Chinese Mohammedans in the neighboring Chinese province of Yunnan so weakened the power of the Chinese that the incursions of hostile tribes (Kachins) made work extremely dangerous. The mines were finally abandoned by the Chinese about 1868. The closing down of the mines was probably not entirely due to outside causes but may have been influenced somewhat by the increasing difficulty of handling the water, as the workings gradually descended below the water level of the district. The effect of oxygen partial pressure on the volatilization percentages of valuable metals from iron-rich pyrite cinder by chlorination-volatilization method using CaCl2 as chlorinating agent was investigated in this study. The volatile products were collected directly and analyzed by X-ray diffraction. It was found that there were CuCl2, CuCl, PbCl2, and ZnCl2 existed in the volatile products. Au and Pb volatilization percentages were almost not affected by oxygen partial pressure. Both Cu and Zn volatilization percentages were negatively correlated with oxygen partial pressure when CaCl2 dosage was no more than 4 wt%, and almost uncorrelated with oxygen partial pressure with a CaCl2 dosage of 6 wt%.
