A photoguaplric method of measuring crack velocities has been applied to an examilzation of- the effect of hydrogen on the impact properties of zirconium. Results indicate that the crack in hydrided zirconit travels at about 26 m per sec whereas that in the uacuum -annealed is dependent on the speed of the hammer. RECENT work on the effect of hydrogen on zirconium reveals that when hydrided zirconium is tested in slow bending the crack producing failure can be unstable. The mode of fracture seems to involve the crack linking up broken hydrides by a ductile mechanism in the zirconium matrix.2" In order to compare the fracture of zirconium with that of other metals which show unstable crack propagation, notably steel, the rate of the crack spread must be known. As the methods previously used for measuring crack growth are either unsuitable for the present work5-'' or very costly," a simple technique has been devised in which the maximum crack velocity is derived from a series of crack position-time measurements. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experimental arrangement is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The flash unit12 was triggered when the Charpy hammer touched the specimen and the 6-psec flash of the lamp delayed by a preselected time interval in the range 100psec to 10 msec. The camera was left on open shutter during the test. From direct measurement on a calibrated photographic print, Fig. 2, the position of the crack and the specimen was found at a known time after impact and, from a series of such tests using an appropriate range of flash-delay times, the crack velocity was estimated. Preliminary experiments were carried out on mild steel above and below its transition temperature. Vacuum-annealed zirconium, and zirconium hydrided to 100 ppm H were then tested at 20" and 150°C. For comparison, Zr-2.6 pct Nb alloy (in the 0 + transformed /3 condition), vacuum-annealed or hydrided to 100 ppm H, was tested at 20 C. The chemical analyses of these materials are given in Table I. For the high-temperature tests a fine chromel-alumel thermocouple was spot-welded onto each specimen close to the notch. The test piece was heated up to 200°C to allow enough time for preparing the apparatus while the specimen cooled to the testing tem- perature. It was assumed that the specimen cooled uniformly. The accuracy of the flash-delay time was better than i2 pct i 5 psec. The crack length was taken as its maximum distance traveled normal to the length axis of the specimen. Errors in these measurements arise as a result of the uncertainty in the location of the crack tip and the difficulty in defining the exact position of the crack starting point. The latter was due to the bonding and large amounts of deformation at the hammer contact point, especially in the vacuum-annealed specimens tested at 150°C. The maximum error in the measurements was however estimated to be about 5 pct. DISCUSSION OF RESULTS From the trial experiments using mild steel above its transition temperature it can be seen from the plot of crack length against time after impact, Fig. 3. that a reasonable estimate of the maximum crack velocity at the surface of the specimen may be made. Output of minerals was insignificant in 1981 and made a negligible contribution to the gross national product (GNP), estimated at $1.2 billion.2 Agriculture accounted for 40% of CNP and manufacturing accounted for 10%. The chief source of income was indirect taxes levied on traffic through the Port of Cotonou, an entrepôt. Trade statistics for Benin were incomplete and dated. Major trading partners were France and other members of the European Communities. Benin was a member of the West African Monetary Union and as such must coordinate its foreign currency, reserves, interest rate structure, and fund transfer with other member countries. Its currency, the Communauté Financière Africaine franc (CFAF), was fixed to the French franc.

"Al-Sc-Zr alloys form thermally stable L12 precipitates which provide high temperature strength. Although the overall fraction of L12 Al3Sc and Al3Zr may be increased by increasing scandium (Sc) and zirconium (Zr) content, such additions may increase primary phase fractions and do not produce desirable secondary phase morphologies. Rapid solidification techniques, such as melt spinning, increase solute atom concentration within the matrix. When the supersaturated matrix is aged, higher precipitate volume fractions at low Sc and Zr levels can be achieved improving high temperature strength. Melt spinning was used to rapidly solidify (107 k/s) a thin ribbon of Al-0.5Sc-0.4Zr at. %. The ribbon was compacted and extruded into 99.8% dense rods, and then aged using multi-step isochronal heat treatment up to 600°C. Precipitation strengthening was evaluated by ambient hardness measurement. The ambient hardness of melt-spun ribbon after precipitation hardening increased by 450 MPa (~67% increment) during isochronal heat treatment.INTRODUCTION Small Sc and Zr additions to aluminum improve strength and creep resistance above 300°C due to tri-aluminide precipitation of Al3(Sc,Zr) in L12 structures similar to ??, Ni3(Al,Ti) in nickel superalloy, but the Al3(Sc,Zr) particles have a Sc-rich core surrounded by Zr-rich shell (Figure 1). The Al3Zr shell limits atomic transport between the Al3Sc core and the matrix and reduces coherency strain. These factors reduce precipitate coarsening rate at elevated temperature (Bergner & Van Chi, 1977; Fujikawa, 1997; Knipling et al., 2011; Clouet et al., 2006).Figure 1. THERE has been considerable discussion among A metallurgists and others interested in the development of titanium alloys as to the nature of the fine line markings which appear in the microstruc-tures of unalloyed titanium and a titanium alloys. These markings have been variously called x phase, etching pits, and twins. Figs. 1 to 3 show typical examples of the line markings as they appear, respectively, in high purity iodide titanium, commercial purity titanium rod, and a high purity a alloy containing 0.2 pct N. The commercial purity titanium sample, shown in Fig. 2, contains both line markings and some spheroidal retained-ß phase. The ß phase seen in this micrograph should not be confused with the line marking, since it originates from the iron present as an impurity in the sponge metal. It will be noted that the line markings seem to have a definite orientation pattern with respect to the grains and in titanium noticeably resemble the precipitation occurring in artificially aged high purity Al-Cu alloys. This similarity led to the hypothesis that the line markings observed in titanium and a titanium alloys resulted from precipitation of some unknown phase. With the work of Hägg1 and McQuillan2 as background, there was little reason to suspect hydrogen of being responsible for the line markings. Hagg reported that up to 33 atomic pct H was soluble in a titanium, and McQuillan reported an a solubility of up to 8 atomic pct. Furthermore, McQuillan examined metallographically a 5.1 atomic pct H alloy quenched from 300°C and stated that the structure appeared to be a single-phase a solid solution. Line markings have been observed frequently and were first noted by Jaffee and Campbell3 in 1949. They did not observe them in vacuum-annealed titanium and a Ti-O and Ti-N alloys, but did observe them in Ti-H alloys containing 0.25, 0.5, and 1 atomic pct H. They stated that it was doubtful that the markings were a second phase based on hydrogen, because 1 atomic pct was far from the accepted solid solubility of hydrogen in titanium. Finlay, Resketo, and Vordahl,4 in 1950, concluded that the markings were a true second phase as a result of observations on their etching characteristics. Anderson5 Commenting on these markings in titanium was inclined to associate them with hydrogen, but was loath to call them titanium hydride, because of the reported high solubility of hydrogen. Work at Battelle Memorial Institute for the Navy Bureau of Aeronautics," done concurrently with the work described in this paper, provided information on the experiment converse to that described by Jaffee and Campbell in 1949. This work showed that the amount of line markings in unalloyed titanium could be decreased by vacuum annealing at elevated temperature. It was suggested that this was the result of removal of hydrogen; previously, the data of Jaffee and Campbell9 howed that the markings appeared when hydrogen was added. Recent work at Battelle for the Ordnance Corps, Department of the Army, which is described here, now establishes the identity of the markings as a titanium hydride phase. A sample of high-purity titanium rod 1/4 in. diam, 0.009±0.001 wt pct H (0.43 atomic pct), Fig. 1, was resistance heated in a 0.05 micron vacuum for 41/2 hr at 1500°C. During the early states of heating, the pressure increased to 150 microns, indicating that gases were being evolved. After cooling in vacuum, the iodide titanium rod was analyzed for hydrogen. Vacuum-fusion analysis showed 0.0006 ±0.0003 wt pct H (0.03 atomic pct) to be present.* Metallographic examination of the vacuum-annealed rod showed only a transformed ß structure. The traditional Ti6Al4V alloys were obtained by the smelting reduction of V-Ti bearing beach placer by rotary hearth furnace and aluminothermic reaction in laboratory. First, it gets he lp from combined rotary hearth furnace and grinding magnetic separation process to prepare titanium slag containing vanadium. In this study, a neural network model was used. The comparisons between experiment results and neural network simulation results show that genetic algorithm (GA)-based on back propagation (BP) method can predict the degree of reduction and separation of iron and slag with higher prediction accuracy. Then by aluminothermic reaction process, the optimized process parameters for Ti-V-Al alloys were searched. Al can deoxidize metal V and Ti from the metal oxides of artificial rutile containing vanadium. Finally, traditional Ti6Al4V alloy can be obtained by remelt and adjust the constituents.

Many reports have been written about the issues surrounding small scale miners’ challenges in Namibia; yet little has been done to address these challenges. There has been a fragmented approach to address these challenges. Various government arms and donor organizations have utilized piece meal methods in the past in trying to make improvements on the productivities across the sector, but with no meaningful success. This has led to the design and implementation of inappropriate technologies and support services for the sector. The structures of many of the semi-precious stones mining businesses are informal, with very little royalties received by the government. Miners often work informally or illegally and they fear government interference and they distrust outsiders, resulting in them withholding production information. The presence of small scale miners is quite often associated with major challenges, including poor safety and environmental management standards, the spread of communicable diseases and poor working conditions. The majority of the miners employ uncontrolled extraction techniques which damage the crystals and mineral specimens, resulting in intermediate and final products of low quality along with high wastage at the extraction stage. The vision of the Namibian government is to expand the range and value of semi-precious stones and jewelry products processed within Namibia, while curbing illicit flows of raw stones. This will simultaneously secure maximum benefit for the country. This study investigated the interventions aimed at making the small scale mining sector in Namibia sustainable. A baseline study was conducted to analyze the current situation and characterize the industry, including a SWOT analysis. Information was collected through questionnaires, interviews, consultative meetings, field visits and workshops in order to profile the sector. The baseline study results were used in developing interventions for improving artisanal and small scale mining operations. The main challenges for the Namibian semi-precious sector were identified as: factual information about raw material resources and its beneficiation are insufficient or not available, lack of skills, lack of education and access to finances, rudimentary exploration and mining practices, trading and logistics that are not functioning effectively and inadequate sector governance. One key finding of this study was that Namibia is not benefiting through value addition due partly to illicit flows of the uncut stones and to the fact that lapidary is not much pronounced to a greater extent. The following strategic interventions were identified as key in ensuring the sustainability of the small mining sector in Namibia: conducting geological assessment to identify new deposits and quantify the existing ones, improving exploration and mining practices, investing in education and training, creating an enabling environment and improving the sector governance and strengthening the sector organization and supporting the infrastructure.

"Autoclaves were first used in the metallurgical industry in 1893 to recover alumina from bauxite. In the 1940s and 1950s, several high temperature and pressure processes were invented in the laboratory of Professor Frank Forward at The University of British Columbia, in parallel with advances in equipment and processes by the Chemical Construction Corporation. Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited enlisted these groups to help develop the nickel sulfide ammonia leach process that was commercialized in 1954. Autoclave processes that have since been commercialized include high-pressure acid leaching of laterites, zinc pressure leaching, and pressure oxidation of refractory gold feedstocks. RÉSUMÉ En 1893, l’industrie métallurgique est la première à utiliser les autoclaves pour l’extraction de l’alumine dans la bauxite. Dans les années 1940 et 1950, plusieurs procédés à haute température et à haute pression sont inventés dans le laboratoire du Pr Frank Forward de l’université de la Colombie-Britannique (UBC) ; parallèlement, la Chemical Construction Corporation fait de grands progrès en matière d’équipement et de procédés. They are used in metallurgical refineries throughout the world to take advantage of the increased reaction kinetics and different reaction products that can be obtained in aqueous systems above the boiling temperature at atmospheric pressure. The word autoclave comes from the French “auto” and the Latin “clavis” and literally means self-locking—that is, the core distinguishing feature of an autoclave is that it includes a means for pressure regulation (e.g., a pressure relief valve). Denis Papin (Figure 1a), one of the inventors of the steam engine, was the first to make use of a safety valve to control steam pressure. He is credited with inventing the autoclave in 1679. Papin’s “digester” (Figure 1b) was a type of pressure cooker that was originally used to liquefy bones. Most commercial autoclaves are horizontal, multicompartment vessels with mechanical agitation, as shown in Figure 2a; however, the steam-agitated Pachuca vessels used to leach laterite ore in Moa, Cuba (Figure 2b), are also classified as autoclaves according to the self-locking definition provided above."

Accretions of dust on the walls of the offtakes from furnaces and in the waste heat boiler are a cause of significant operating and maintenance problems in non-ferrous smelters. The dust originates from entrained solids in the gas stream and vaporised species that condense during gas cooling. Control of dust formation is very important for minimising the formation of accretions and reducing the severity of environmental problems caused by toxic species, such as those containing arsenic, in the dust. The present paper discusses the formation of accretions and the condensation of dust in copper smelting from a thermodynamic viewpoint. Changes, in gas composition and the amounts and identities of the condensed species in the dust are calculated using computational thermodynamics. Interactions between dust species to form accretions are considered in the light of appropriate phase equilibria. The results show that the nature of the dust formed varies greatly, depending on the temperature and the amount of oxygen present during cooling. Control of the amount of oxygen is required if offtake and waste heat boiler accretion problems are to be minimised.

"IntroductionWITH THE DISCOVERY of natural radioactivity at the end of the 19th century, and the design of equipment for the detection of this phenomenon, radioactivity surveys bad their inception. Early in the 20th century it was found that almost all rocks are radioactive to a certain degree. This radioactivity is due to the nuclear disintegration of six naturally radioactive elements: potassium, thorium, uranium, rubidium, samarium, and lutecium.The radioactivity of these elements manifests itself by the emission of some concentration of alpha, beta, and gamma 'rays'. Of these, the alpha and beta 'rays' are, respectively, helium atoms and electrons, while the gamma 'rays' are short wave length x-rays generated in the nuclear disintegration by the transformation of mass into energy.The alpha and beta rays, being particles of matter, are stopped ve• easily by material barriers, but gamma rays are extremely penetrating and they will pass through a foot or more of rock or several inches of lead.The radioactivity may be detected by the causing of ionization by the radiation. The radiation detectors may be divided into four classes: ionization chambers, proportion al counters, and Geiger counters, all of which use gas for ionization, and scintillation counters, in which a solid is ionized. The basic principle of all these detectors is the same; the difference lies in the method used to measure the degree of ionization produced by the rays. Currently, the scintillation counter is displacing, the other instruments in radioactivity surveying."

As the program says -we'll he talking about the expectations of the Management of an Industrial Mineral enterprise relative to the activities of geologists engaged in that enterprise. Industrial Minerals is such a large industry both in tons produced and in value of product -and of such diversity and complexity of participating enterprises, minerals and products that I doubt if anyone person can speak for the entire industry as to the expectations of management with respect to the geologist. I'm sure there are major differences in emphasis between segments of management as to the relative importance of the different aspects of the geologists' role in the scheme of things. However, we will try to generalize concerning what we consider to be important factors and to be more specific perhaps of some of the factors with which we have had direct assessable experience.

In 1982, the result of a 3-year study was published as "A Guide to the Understanding of Ore Reserve Estimation". The principal conclusions were that computation formed only part, and perhaps not the most important part, of an estimate and that the estimate should recognize that geological, mining engineering and metallurgical judgements formed an essential part of the eventual result. Subsequent expectation/realization studies of several mines have produced case histories which form the principal basis of the paper. These imply that geology is even a larger factor than thought earlier.

When plotted as head vs. volume, fan curves start high and decrease with increasing volume, while mine head curves start low and rise with increasing volume. Their intersection is the system operating point. However, as every ventilation instructor knows, the fact that head loss is a negative number (debit) and fan head is an energy addition (credit) is often a stumbling block to student or audience comprehension since the curves seem to reflect the opposite. It is possible to use the intuitively correct curves- pressure losses as negative values and energy additions as positive values - and still obtain the correct operating point. Adding the two curves produces a third curve that intersects the x-axis at the operating point, the point at which the fan energy input exactly matches air circulation energy loss. Using this technique also makes it easier to account for outside influences on the system, such as natural ventilating pressure. With the standard approach, it is quite easy to add or subtract such influences to the wrong curve. This approach can be extended to the graphical solution of any series/parallel ventilation network. The results are the same, and the approach is logically consistent and less confusing.

In this work, research of reduction process was studied by means of rotary kiln (u1.5 m /C215 m) process anatomy in order to provide fine guidance to large-scale operation. It was shown that the average reduction degree of 89.96% and metallization ratio of 85.15% were obtained at the highest temperature of 977°C and total residence time of 90 min. The generation amount of metallic iron in section of temperature higher than 900°C and lower than 900°C was 34.15 and 56.38%, respectively. The section of lower temperature of 830–900 °C played an important role in formation of metallic iron, making it possible for mini-pellet to reduce quickly at lower temperature. Two main tasks were completed for mini-pellets in rotary kiln: the reduction of iron oxides in the range of 15.0–4.5 m as well as migration and bene ficiation of metallic iron, facilitating the subsequent separation of iron and gangue minerals.

"What is now known as the 'Waite section' of the property of Waite Amulet Mines, Limited, was originally the Waite-Ackerman-Montgomery mine. It includes a group of twenty-eight claims lying on either side of the Duprat-Dufresnoy township line, and about 8 miles north-northwest of Noranda, Quebec. ,The original discovery of ore on the property was made by Thomas Montgomery in Block Q, Duprat township, and was staked by him on behalf of himself, I. C. Waite, and C. H. Ackerman, in the summer of 1925. The property was optioned late in 1925 to N. A. Timmins who, after trenching and drilling the deposit, sold his 85 per cent interest to Noranda Mines, Limited. Early in 1927, a company known as Waite-Ackerman-Montgomery Mines, Limited, was formed and shaft sinking and development undertaken. Production commenced in August, 1928, ·and continued tJ May, 1930, when, owing to falling metal prices, shipment of direct smelting ore was stopped. Development of the mine by shaft sinking, drifting, and drilling continued until March, 1932, when owing to the prolonged low price of metals, the property was closed down. In September, 1933, an amalgamation with Amulet Mines, Limited, was effected, the new company being called Waite Amulet Mines, Limited. Early in 1937 operations were resumed, first by direct shipments to the smelter and later by aerial tramway to the Amulet mill. Operations have been continuous up to the present time, reaching an average of 720 tons a day milled for the year 1940. Production during the initial period (1928-1930) amounted to 75,811 tons, having an average grade of 7 .11 per cent copper, 4.47 per cent zinc, and 0.03 oz. gold and 0.65 oz. silver per ton. During the second period (1937 to end of 1946) , 1,060,524 tons, having an average grade of 4.53 per cent copper, 2.97 per cent zinc, and 0.03 oz. gold and 0.65 oz. silver per ton, were produced."

Tin deposits in Catron County, New Mexico, were explored by the Bureau of Mines under authority of the Strategic Minerals Act of August 1939. The investigation covered both lode and placer deposits and was later extended to deposits in Sierra County. Six of the known deposits were examined by E. D. Gardner, supervising engineer of the Southwest Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, and S. G. Lasky, a geologist of the Federal Geological Survey, in June and July 1939. It was recommended that the more promising occurrences be explored by test pitting, trenching, and sampling. Field work, under supervision of M. E. Volin, began in September and continued through December 1939. The area was mapped by Carl Fries, Jr., of the Federal Geological Survey, in 1939 and 1940. The La Cruz Development Co. acquired control of the Squaw Creek placer claims in 1942 and began active sampling and development preliminary to large-scale operations. The result of this work showed a considerably higher tin content than that found by the Bureau of Mines in 1939. Because of this report and reports from other parts of the district that large-scale operations for the production of tin from lode deposits were possible, it was recommended that the Bureau of Mines resample parts of Squaw Creek and conduct a mill test of lode material to determine whether a concentrate could be made that was high enough in tin and low enough in iron to be acceptable in American smelting practice. This work, under the supervision of Paul L. Russell, was begun in November 1942 and completed in January 1943, during which time the Sierra Metals Co. acquired control of a large area in Sawmill Canyon. At the suggestion of the Federal Geological Survey and the War Production Board, which had reason to believe that a great deal of commercial material existed on certain flatlands and gully slopes, the project was extended to include test pitting and sampling of those areas. This work was completed in February 1943.

The purpose of this paper is to provide a method for mine planners and engineers to evaluate on a conceptual basis if a shaft or a ramp is most suited for their particular underground access requirements. Mine planners and engineers are often raced with the decision of choosing which method of underground access is best suited for their particular requirement. Underground access can be provided by a shaft, ramp, adit, or slope for either exploration and/or actual production operations. This paper will focus on the construction cost and schedule differences between sinking a shaft and excavating a ramp which are currently the most typical access alternatives used in the western United States. It would be wrong to state that one method is superior to the other in every case. There are many variables to be addressed, and the degree of sensitivity of each of them will eventually dictate which method is the most suited to the particular circumstances. This paper compares the construction cost and schedule or sinking a shaft to excavating a ramp at different depths given different ground and hydrological conditions. This comparison provides mine planners with "rules or thumb" that may be applied to the access selection process.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has attempted to use ultrasonic signal travel-time measurements to measure loaded roof bolt strains. The strain measurements are then related to roof bolt loads through equations or empirical calibrations. Such techniques offer the potential of accurate, rapid bolt load measurement that does not disturb the anchotage. This report presents 6e research findings for a specific type of ultrasonic measurement instrument using a pulsed-phase-Iock-Ioop technique. This technique measures signal travel time indirectly by measuring frequency changes. A complete development of the applicable theory and detailed derivations of key equations is presented along with empirical laboratory and field results. The differences between anticipated and measured behaviors are analyzed and discussed. The report identifies problems encountered in applying pulsed-phase-Iock-Ioop technology to roof bolt load measurement and provides potential solutions to many of them. A key assumption of pulsed-phase-lock-loop theory is that driving and reflected signal frequencies will always be equal. Findings showed that not only were actual frequencies not equal but they were not stable or simply related. Reflection wave shape also was not stable. The ramification of these findings and ways to minimize their adverse effects are presented.

The drag and hoist ropes contribute most to the dragline operating cost, and significantly influence dragline productive time. Both work in very difficult conditions and wear out rapidly. As a result frequent rope changes are required at a substantial cost and time loss to the operation. Although performance of rigging has a profound impact on dragline performance, there are no industry-wide standards related to its selection, operation and maintenance. Little information on the subject is available and the practice differs widely throughout the industry. The life of drag and hoist ropes depends on: (1) rope construction, which should closely match requirements of the specific application, (2) correct definition and application of the rope discard criteria, so that full advantage of the rope can be taken without endangering safety of operation, and (3) rope operating conditions and its maintenance. The study presented in this paper was intended to address the above points, based on a survey and assessment of the present industry practice.

INTRODUCTION The global market for sulphur has experienced dramatic structural shifts during the past 10-15 years. After a number of years of dominance as sulphur suppliers, the world's Frasch producers were confronted with large increases in nondiscretionary sulphur production from sour crude oil and gas, while escalating energy and exploration costs reduced the economic incentives to replace dwindling sulphur reserves. Sulphur demand also experienced substantial growth, but the majority of this increase was filled by nondiscretionary production. The result was essentially flat demand for Frasch sulphur during this period. This paper briefly summarizes Freeport Sulphur Company's outlook for global supply and demand for sulphur through the year 2000, and examines in more detail the history and anticipated shifts in trade patterns. World trade in elemental sulphur (brimstone), despite year-to-year fluctuations, has been on an upward trend in recent years, and should continue to grow through the end of this century. The type (discretionary vs. nondiscretionary) and location of forecast sulphur supply sources has potentially broad implications for the world's Frasch producers, as they compete in a world market which is increasingly supplied by non-discretionary production. SULPHUR DEMAND Sulphur is a versatile and essential element used in a wide variety of manufacturing processes. Almost 90% of world sulphur consumption is in the form of sulphuric acid. The relatively low cost, ready availability, and physical and chemical properties of sulphuric acid make it the most economical acid for a number of chemical processes. Although sulphur is used in the manufacture of many products, the largest consumer by far is the phosphate fertilizer industry. The majority of sulphur demand growth over the past 30 years has occurred in this area, and today it accounts for nearly 65% of global sulphur consumption in all forms. Due to the relative importance of phosphate fertilizers, sulphur demand is typically discussed in terms of fertilizer and non-fertilizer (or industrial) uses, and this approach will be followed here. We at Freeport believe that global consumption of phosphate fertilizers should grow at an average annual rate of about 3.5% through the year 2000, which is roughly equal to the growth rate experienced during the past ten years. The basic assumption underlying this forecast is that world population will continue to grow significantly, while the total acres of cropland will grow only slightly. Therefore, in order to feed a growing population, higher crop yields will be necessary, which in turn will require the increasing use of fertilizers. This expected growth in phosphate consumption will, without doubt, fluctuate from year to year, and we Frasch producers have painful memories of the large dip in demand during 1982-83. However, we believe that the fundamentals for growth are very good, and that future demand will move back onto the historical trend line. In the recent recession the use of sulphur in the non-fertilizer or industrial sector dropped sharply, and it now appears that future growth will not return to the old trend line. Most of the non-fertilizer uses of sulphur and sulphuric acid involve older industries which are very mature, such as oil refining, steel, pulp and paper, pigments, etc. The use of sulphur in some of these industries is expected to exhibit little or possibly even negative

The problems of using comparatively simple x-ray diffraction equipment for quantitative analysis are examined. Internal standard and direct calibration procedures based upon the measurement of integrated diffraction energy (diffractometer peak area) have been developed for the determination of quartz in Broken Hill dusts. By these methods an accuracy of ± 10 per cent of the true value can be obtained and this can be improved to ±2 1/2 per cent by statistical methods if necessary.Rapid analysis for the components quartz, muscovite, rhodonite, galena, fluorite, sphalerite, calcite, and garnet has been developed by adaptation of direct calibration procedures and use of maximum diffraction energies (diffractometer peak height). Until more is know!) about the pathological effects of multi-component dusts of the Broken Hill type it seems undesirable to fix theIr allowable concentrations in terms of the quartz content.
