"World metallurgical coal imports totalled 110million tonnes in 1978. Of this amount, Japan imported 50 million tonnes, making it by far the largest and most important coking coal market . British Columbia and Alberta exported 12.0 million tonnes of coking coal in 1978, or 11% of the world total. Virtually all of these exports were directed to Japan, making up 22% of total imports.Some observers have suggested that because Japan is almost the exclusive buyer of British Columbia and Alberta metallurgical coal, the benefits of the coal trade may be primarily on the side of the powerful Japanese buyers. Buttressing this suspicion is the fact that Japanese trading companies have taken substantial equity positions in B.C. coal mines, thus presenting the possibility of non-arms-Iength transfer arrangements. There is then at least some evidence to support the hypothesis that Canada's western coal producers receive prices that are less than would prevail in a more competitive market; that is, that they are exploited.This paper produces evidence that Canada's coals are not underpriced in respect to U.S. and world markets. The conclusion is drawn that British Columbia and Alberta metallurgical coals receive prices that are equal to prices known to be competitively determined. This conclusion follows an in-depth analysis of prices, coal qualities and the economic characteristics of all major coals traded in the Japanese market. A by-product of the analysis is an equation capable of predicting the value of any metallurgical coal sold to Japanese buyers, or, for that matter, any buyer. Hopefully, this can be of some use to coal producers in developing their marketing strategies."

"The Frood-Stobie Mine is by far the largest metal producer in the Sudbury area. Its efficient development was made possible by the consolidation of three mining properties that covered parts of the same ore body. They were known as the Frood Mine, the Frood Extension, and the Stobie Mine.The southwest or Frood portion of the orebody was discovered by Thomas Frood and A. J. Cockburn in 1884. Cockburn's interest was acquired by J. H. Metcalf and W. B. McAllister and patents were issued to Frood, Metcalf, and McAllister in 1884. The property was purchased by the Canadian Copper Company (lnco) in 1886.James Stobie discovered the northeast or Stobie part of the orebody in 1885. In 1886 Stobie and Rinaldo McConnell applied for the location and patent was issued in 1886. They sold the property to the Canadian Copper Company (lnco) the same year.The Frood Extension property included very little of the ore zone at surface but it covered ore down the dip from Frood. Frank Cochrane was granted title to the property in 1908 and sold it to the Mond Nickel Company in 1910. The title was transferred to the International Nickel Company in 1929 at the time of the Inco-Mond merger.Prior to 1930 the three properties produced a total of about 1 ,000,000 tons of ore from mining done during the periods 1887-1903, 1913-1915 and 1925-1929. Since 1929 the Frood-Stobie operation has produced more than 120,000,000 tons of ore, about half from open pits and half from square set and blast hole stoping. The current production rate is in excess of 6,000,000 tons per year.The principal products from the ore are nickel and copper. The by-products are iron ore, cobalt, platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium, gold, silver, selenium, tellurium, and sulphuric acid."

As mining progresses in the West, the depth of material has increased, making highwall stability a major factor in safety and production. The Jim Bridger Coal Mine’has made highwall stability a priority, concentrating on safety as well as increasing and improving production. Overburden depths are increasing dramatically; the geological environment consists of medium to sot? material, faulting, water, and current pit alignment not favorable to joint planes. Angle drilling the presplit at 20 degrees became necessaryas vertical presplit drilling produced wall failures.

This surveillance report summarizes data on work-related fatal and nonfatal injuries, illnesses, and hazardous exposures in the mining industry for the 10-year period 1986-1995. The term ?surveillance,? as used in public health, may be new to many readers of this report. With regard to occupational safety and health, the goal of surveillance is to describe the occurrence of work-related injuries, illnesses, and known hazardous exposures; to identify new hazards that may occur due to the introduction of new technology or other factors; and to assess the effects of preventive measures designed to improve worker safety and health. Surveillance provides an overall picture, which can be used to focus resources on areas most in need of prevention programs or further research. Surveillance generally requires the use of multiple sources of data, all of which have their own strengths and limitations. Surveillance in the U.S. mining industry is complicated by the fact that U.S. national data systems that provide information on mining are based on two different definitions of the mining industry. One is established by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), the other by the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) System [Office of Management and Budget 1987] and the 1980 U.S. Bureau of the Census (BOC) Classification System [U.S. Bureau of the Census 1982].

Please allow me the temerity to reply to your reply to my contribution as follows: A fracture is brittle if plastic deformation is absent or, conversely a fracture is ductile if plastic deformation is present. Consequently, brittleness is specified by the degree of plastic deformation at fracture. This is the generally accepted definition. If other material properties (e.g. the quorient or the product of the uniaxial compressive and tensile strengths) under certain conditions are influenced by brittleness, or brittleness by them, these should not be called brittleness. If the one or the other author does that, he simply uses imprecise language. Even your remark, that ?Inyang and Pitt (1990) stated that the ratio of the compressive strength (sc/st) is directly proportional to brittleness?, confirms that the two quantities are not considered the same. For example:? The well known definition that a material is linear?elastic if the strain is directly proportional to the stress?does not mean that stress (measured in MPa) and strain (measured in %) are the same thing.

In April, the US Synthetic Fuels Corp. broke a three-year silence and made its first financial award by approving a $820,750 loan for the First Colony peat-to-methanol project in North Carolina (ME, May, page 403). Peat Methanol Associates (PMA), a partnership between Koppers Co., ETCO Methanol Inc., Transco, Peat Methanol Co., and l. B. Sunderland, broke ground at First Colony last year and plans to begin production in Dec. 1985. Although the award is only a small part of Synthetic Fuels Corp.'s $15-billion budget, it does signal the corporation's intention to move aggressively ahead. It also is a positive indication that First Colony will be completed and operated successfully. This article describes the methods and equipment that will be used to harvest peat at First Colony, as well as how the peat will be converted to methanol. Introduction Peat deposits found along North Carolina's coastal plain contain high-quality fuel-grade peat with an average heating value of more than 23.3 MJ/kg (10,000 Btu/lb) (dry), with a low sulfur and ash content. The deposits differ from other US peats in that they contain large, sound Atlantic White Cedar and Cypress logs, stumps, and roots that may extend throughout the full depth of the deposit. A second difference is that these deposits are much more highly decomposed and, in the raw state, have the appearance and feel of a heavy, reddish-brown grease. These factors make it impractical to use standard production equipment so a new line was developed. Also, because of these conditions, techniques were modified to facilitate production. First Colony Farms, located near Creswell, NC, developed and evaluated a milled peat program. Equipment for this production method was designed and built, production rates were established from field operations, drying rates were established, weather data were analyzed, and total operating and capital costs were estimated. The method depends on the sun and wind for drying peat to the desired moisture content, in this case around 40%. Therefore, field preparation is actually the construction of a large solar collector to dry the peat so it can be harvested and stockpiled. It is essential that this collector be properly profiled initially and maintained during production to prevent precipitation from ponding. Initial Field Preparation Initial field preparation includes cleaning existing canals and constructing ditches and water control structures for proper drainage of rainwater run-off, building adequate roads for site access, removing surface vegetation, and profiling and sloping the fields. At First Colony, the 60.7-km2 (15,000-acre) harvesting area was divided into 129.5-hm2 (320-acre) blocks about 1.6 km (1 mile) long and 805 m (0.5 mile) wide. This was accomplished by cleaning main outfall canals with adjacent roads built from canal spoil at 1.6-km (1-mile) intervals. Existing intermediate canals that feed into main outfall canals at 805-m (0.5-mile) intervals also are cleaned. Headland roads are constructed from canal spoil along each side of each intermediate canal. This 129.5-hm2 (320-acre) block is then divided into 32 harvest strips by small V-ditches constructed at 50-m (165-ft) intervals. At the end of the field with the lowest elevation, corrugated steel pipe culverts are installed under the headland road in each V-ditch to control rainwater runoff into intermediate canals. Runoff water from the fields is diverted to a holding pond to prevent any increase in peak water runoff rates and to allow for more uniform drainage rate than experienced to date. After the drainage system is installed, harvest strips are ready for grinding and sloping operations. Surface vegetation, made up of small, waxy-leafed shrubs such as Gallberry, Bayberry, Magnolia, and scattered pond pine, can be effectively ground and incorporated into the upper surface of the peat layer. Here, it will rapidly decompose and have little effect on overall peat quality, thus eliminating the standard practice of pushing the vegetation and upper wood layer into long windrows with bulldozers and hauling this debris from the fields. Incorporating vegetation into the upper surface is known as the initial 102-mm (4-in.) surface vegetation grind and is accomplished by using a modified Bros Rota Mixer. Following this operation, and by using the same unit, a sec¬ond grind with a depth of 200-255 mm (8-10 in.) is made. This reduces the debris to a finer consistency, mixes it with the upper peat layer, and grinds any wood found in the upper 200-255 mm (8-10 in.). "The property of Gaspe Copper Mines, Limited, is in the Gaspe Peninsula some 60 miles west of the town of Gaspe and 20 miles in from the north coast. The Copper Mountain deposit was first discovered in 1921 and first optioned and drilled by Noranda in 1938. The Upper Needle Mountain showings a mile south were found in 1938, but it was not until after a delay of 10 years that the more important deep ore at Needle Mountain was located by drilling. Production started in 1955, and the smelter commenced operation in December. Mining is by open stope methods with first production coming from the Lower Needle Mountain orebody, of which only a small portion has been exposed in underground openings.Stratigraphy and AlterationThe country rock is composed of limy siltstones of Devonian age. Away from alteration these are dark and generally carbonaceous. Throughout the drilled area numerous narrow layers of tuffaceous fragmental material occur, and such beds are found to provide excellent horizon markers by virtue of their uniform thickness and wide lateral distribution. These markers are valuable for stope control in mining the bedded replacement deposits.Intruding the sediments at Copper Mountain are porphyry dykes, and one drill hole encountered granite 1,400 feet below the valley. Solutions responsible for the rock alteration and ore deposits seem to have emanated from this intrusive centre.On the mine claims strong hydrothermal alteration has completely obscured the original character of the sediments. The unaltered formations are all very similar in appearance, but following alteration rocks that are very dissimilar in physical characteristics are produced, and such differences have an important influence on ore deposition. The alteration effects are known to extend over a vertical range in excess of 3,000 feet and have a surface area of two square miles. All known ore bodies are within the zone of alteration. In this, rocks are strikingly bleached to a white colour in contrast to the normal dark-coloured sediments, and are much harder and more abrasive, with bedding often obscured. The first effect of alteration is driving off of carbonaceous matter, followed progressively by silicification in the acid rocks and by the formation of lime silicates in the lime rocks, with an accompanying gain in silica and a corresponding loss in lime. Extensive analysis has shown that there is an actual addition of silica involved in the alteration."

INTRODUCTION Crude oil reserves in the United States are still very large, even though for many years they have not been sufficient to supply our entire domestic requirements. They are continuously being depleted as oil is pumped from the ground, but new discoveries and improved secondary and tertiary recovery methods are helping to reduce the rate of depletion. It is thus a slowly diminishing resource, but even as it is being consumed, immense reserves of oil are left behind as the so called "un-recoverable" portion of petroleum formations. Most oil fields can only obtain a 15 to 40% recovery of the original reservoir, and it is widely quoted that there are still about 300 billion barrels of this un-recoverable oil still in place (Mauch, 1980, etc.). With the present comparatively high oil prices, and the possibility of even higher future prices and short supply, this oil becomes an interesting potential reserve. Mining the petroleum formation would be one means of recovering at least a portion of this oil. The concept of oil mining is neither new nor limited to conventional oil fields, since the procedure could be equally employed with the otherwise difficult to produce heavy oil deposits, and the solid or semi-solid tar sands and diatomaceous hydrocarbon formations. Estimates place the U.S. tar sand resource at about 30 billion barrels, and heavy oil at 5-10 billion barrels (Unitar, 1982). Figure 1 graphically summarizes the heavy oil reserves based upon formation depth and characteristics, while Figure 2 shows their location. High stress in rock masses can cause significant instability problems such as squeezing deformation in soft rock and rock bursts in hard rock. The support system applied in burst-prone areas in high-stress conditions is required to be able to carry high load and accommodate large deformation of the rock mass without experiencing any serious damage. Yielding support systems are promising to provide support for both squeezing and burst-prone rock mass encountered in mining or tunnelling at depth. They are ideally strong and stiff initially and then ductile after yielding (Potvin and Hadjigeorgiou, 2020). With respect to support design, a ground support system has to create a safe working environment under both static and dynamic loading conditions by providing the functions of reinforcing, retaining, holding and connecting elements (Cai and Kasier, 2018). Rigid rock bolts and cable bolts perform reinforcing and holding functions of a ground support system. In highly fractured ground or with large excavation spans (eg at roadway intersections or in caverns), unstable ground depth can exceed the length of typical rigid rock bolts (ie greater than ~3.0 m). In such cases, flexible cable bolts are needed to tie the reinforced and retained rock mass back to deeper and more stable rock. The flexibility of cable bolts allows anchor lengths greater than the tunnel opening that would otherwise restrict rigid bolts. Cable bolts also offer higher strength to weight ratio, with tensile strengths 2–3 times that of standard rebar bolts. This high strength comes at the cost of lower strain tolerance, typically around 5–7 per cent at break. Despite the lower strain tolerance, cable bolts are often used as dynamic support in demanding burst-prone ground conditions. The lower strain tolerance is compensated by allowing sufficient free length for stretching or incorporating a yielding device. There are a number of dynamic cable bolts available on the market and a number of testing campaigns have been undertaken to quantify the dynamic performance of these cable bolts. This paper reviews the existing range of dynamic cable bolts and discusses the potential areas for improvement and further research.

With the increasing use of ornamental rocks, mainly in civil construction, sundry problems were identified in relation to rocks cutting, such as efficiency in the cutting process and rock quality lumber. In recent years several composites have been developed to solve these problems. In this context, the study of the binomial matrix metal-diamond interaction is of paramount importance for the development of new composite materials to improve the efficiency of the cutting tool. The diamond impregnated matrix metal often reveals a reaction between the diamond surface and the matrix. Besides the mechanical connection, chemical reactions can sometimes occur. Therefore, this study aims to assess the achievement of diamond composites in the system Fe / Cu / Ni / Sn via powder metallurgy, with added CRB2. Analyzes have been performed to characterize chemical / physical and mechanical. The results have showed that addition of CRB2 promote significant changes in the properties of composites, especially in wear resistance and fracture toughness. Furthermore, the presence of the composite CRB2 causes a significant improvement in thermal stability.

Henry D. HibbaRd, Pittsburgh, Pa,: This is a most interesting and instructive paper, some of whose lessons should find immediate application. It points out how fuel-consumption is to be decreased in open-hearth practice, by changes in the plan of the furnace. To look first at the greatest item of loss, radiation, it is seen that thicker brick-work is advisable to lessen this. Especially is this true of the roof, made at present, almost universally, only 9 inches thick to prevent cutting. Now that high roofs, well above the course of the flame, are becoming general, and the average melter is better able to judge the temperature of his furnace, that reason has less force; and we may build roofs 18 inches thick, or perhaps better cover the usual 9 inches with an equivalent layer of sand, which has the advantage of following the arch as it rises and falls with the different degrees of heat. The side-walls of the hearth, usually 131/2 inches thick, may also he thickened up to 18 inches, and the door-linings to 7 inches; and the heat thereby saved will be valuable, while its absence from the working-platform will be much appreciated by the workmen.

GOLD was discovered previous to the year 1900 on the east shore of Emerald lake, Afton township, Timagami Forest Reserve. It was found in a small cavern in banded iron formation, close to the water's edge. This occurrence of gold was mentioned in several reports that referred briefly to this area, and prospectors evinced considerable interest in the region. It was not, however, until the Golden Rose Mining Company, which was incorporated in 1909, started operations that much work was done on the property. In 1915-16, this Company, under the direction of E. J. Townsend, the President, did a considerable amount of work. A small mill was built and ore was extracted from pits, trenches, and a one~ hundred-foot shaft. In 1927, Afton Mines, Limited, was incorporated to take over the property, and about thirty men were employed for a time. During 1934, the New Golden Rose Mining Company was organized to handle the property, and the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, undertook to develop the mine. In March of the following year, this Company began deepening the shaft from 100 feet to 500 feet. A considerable amount of drilling had previously been done on the hill of iron formation in which the mine is located. Further drilling was done from the surface, and altogether about twelve holes have been put down to test the formations. Over 2,000 feet of drilling has also been done from the underground workings. The mine is now known officially as the New Golden Rose mine, although to many it is better known as the Afton. To reach the property during the summer months, there is a boat trip of about thirty miles from Timagami, a wagon-road portage of one mile to Obabika lake, a boat trip of ten miles on this lake, and finally a wagon-road portage of one and one-quarter miles to Emerald lake. The mine lies about three-quarters of a mile down the east shore of the lake. A 75 h.p. Diesel engine and compressor were taken in over this' route last summer, and it is evident that the transportation problem is quite a serious one. Airplanes have been much in use, and a winter road runs from the mine to Chudleigh, on the .Canadian National railway near Sudbury.

"ABSTRACTSeveral case studies are presented on the use of seismic techniques to map active structures, evaluate changes in stress levels, and identify the conditions leading to large magnitude seismic events and the generation of rock-bursts in Canadian mines. The results suggest that microseismicity can be used to identify the orientation of active fractures; define regions of relatively high and low stress, and those most likely to host a rockburst; determine the role of local stress on observed shear failures; and identify the path of stress transfer associated with the remote triggering of rockbursts. Additionally, the conditions leading to rock-bursts can be characterized by a significant increase in the clustering of microseismic events along the fault plane orientation of an impending event, and an increase in the effective stress levels. It is concluded that the analysis of microseismicity provides the means for remotely monitoring rock mass behaviour as a result of mining."

MOST extraordinary of the technical developments in placer gold mining during the last five years has been the rise of the dragline dredge, by which is meant a floating washing plant for auriferous gravel, fed by a dragline excavator. The idea originated in the fall of 1933, when Horace Onyett constructed a floating washing plant to which gravel was delivered by a dragline excavator standing on dry land. Onyett's operation near Oroville, Calif., and another started by H. F. England later on Wyandotte Creek, Butte County, Calif., yielded '75 oz. of fine gold before the end of 1933. Although the first operation was abandoned shortly as un- profitable, the dragline-dredge method of gold recovery soon began to expand at a boom rate. As a matter of interest, the Onyett operation was taken over later by Lord and Bishop, who are re- ported to have succeeded in making it the first financially successful drag- line dredge. Since 1965 when the first mole was used on Bureau work, the Bureau of Reclamation has completed 17 tunnels of over 5,000 feet in length. The longest was 12.8 miles. Total length of the 17 tunnels was 376,207 feet, or over 71 miles. The finished diameter varied from 7 feet 0 inch to 18 feet 0 inch with 82 percent (58 miles) being less than 12 feet 0 inch in diameter when lined. All of these tunnels except one are gravity flow, water conveyance tunnels with relatively flat gradient. One is a low-head pressure tunnel. All were constructed by contracts resulting from fixed-price bids. Starting in 1964 the Bureau of Reclamation initiated the practice of giving several options in the specifications on methods of tunnel excavation. Since that time, construction work has been completed on 17 tunnels. Of this number, 11 were mole excavated and 6 were excavated by conventional drill and blast methods. In general, there has been 2 feet of mole excavation for every 1 foot of drill and blast. Cost comparisons are based on only 13 tunnels because the Bureau has 4 recently completed tunnels that have pending claims; therefore, final cost data are not available. Some definite trends show from the data available; however, the number of completed tunnels in some categories is so small the results cannot really be considered a trend. As more data become available, the indications will become more reliable. The information is presented to indicate general trends and comparisons and cannot be meaningfully used for a one-on-one comparison because of individual tunnel differences not considered.

A study was conducted to evaluate the applicability of large wheel loaders (Cat 994 class) as primary loading equipment in open pit iron ore operations. Field visits were made to taconite and gold mines that used large wheel loaders. Data were gathered on loader selection rationale; operating and maintenance experience; and production, availability, and cost information. Brief time studies were conducted to indicate machine performance and utilization. The paper summarizes the field data and includes economic comparisons of wheel loaders versus cable shovels in an iron ore application.

U. S. mining trends for 1956 continued steadily U+ S. uphill, technique and equipment advanced with the pull, and exploration and development of once mined districts attracted more attention than new areas. Expansion of the Ambrosia Lake district in New Mexico more than doubled known uranium ore reserves, and production began from several of the large new ore discoveries. In Canada the up trend was more spectacular, especially in exploration and development. To combat increasing problems arising from high labor costs, taxes, low grade orebodies, and dwindling discoveries, manufacturers and mining companies have continued to introduce new techniques and new products-reamer bits for enlarging small holes drilled by jacklegs, whup d'whups for drift mucking, Cryderman machines and over-the-head small crawler-type machines for shaft mucking, the 20-ton TL 220 four-wheeled tractor trailer unit for underground haulage, inertia-type dust collectors, roof bolting in conjunction with chain link fencing for wall support, wooden roof bolting using compression support of ground for wall support, and new one-use carbide bits.

Aqueous SO2 (sulfurous acid) is an interesting chemical compound. It functions as a reagent in various hydrometallurgical systems, but also represents an undesirable constituent in pyro- and hydrometallurgical effluent solutions. When present in such streams, SO2 can be oxidized to the more stable sulfate form to avoid exsolution of SO2 as a source of fugitive emissions and to simplify standard water treatment plant operation. This study provides information on the stoichiometry, kinetics and mechanism of SO2 oxidation using oxygen and an iron salt catalyst with solutions containing 0.05 to 20.0 g/l S02. Other test variables include iron salt concentration, oxygen pressure, temperature, degree of agitation and pH.
