THE prospect of winning aluminum from clay was recorded almost a century ago at a time when the metal was no more than a curiosity.? As the industry developed, and it has probably developed faster than that of any other metal, the expanding need for raw materials was adequately met by the ample supplies of bauxite ore. As with the other metals older in industry, however, lower grade ores have gradually entered the raw-material field through improvements in ore dressing, insufficienoy of high-grade ore supplies, favorable geographic location, or national necessity for domestic supply. So with aluminum, or alumina, which has been established as the requisite intermediate, the time may have come when a satisfactory process, with favorable location and suitable raw materials, can hold a sound place both in metallurgy and economics. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the Ancor process and its proposed application in treatment of clay in a plant now under construction at Harleyville, South Carolina, by the Defense Plant Corporation. DEVELOPMENT OF THE ANCOR PROCESS The Ancor process has developed through successive stages of laboratory investigation, pilot-plant demonstration using nepheline syenite and pilot-plant demonstration using kaolin-type day from South Carolina, and is now in preparation for unit trial on an operating plant basis using the latter material. The laboratory studies were carried out over a number of years in the laboratory of the American Nepheline Corporation in Rochester, N. Y., and for the same company in the ore-dressing laboratory of Beattie Gold Mines, Que. Ltd. at Duparquet, Quebec. Both companies are associated with Ventures Ltd., Toronto, and its associated American companies. The work was originally undertaken with a view to recovery of alumina and alkalies from nepheline syenite as an adjunct to the American Nepheline Company's established business in the glass and ceramic trades, but as a process developed the possibility of application to clay and other aluminous raw materials become apparent and the laboratory studies were broadened to include these as well. Under the more pressing impetus of wartime needs and possibilities, pilot-plant operations were undertaken at the Canadian Bureau of Mines Ore Dressing Laboratories in Ottawa, and for purposes of demonstration under joint sponsorship of the Canadian Bureau of Mines, The American Nepheline Corporation, and The Aluminum Company of Canada Ltd.

Camp and sample-site methods useful for determining about 0.5 to 16 ppm of mercury in soils and rocks have been devised to complement the analytical methods already widely used in geochemical prospecting. In the camp-site procedure the sample solution is obtained by digesting the finely powdered sample with hot nine-molar sulfuric acid and bromine, the latter generated in place. The solution is buffered at a pH of 4 and the mercury is extracted into a relatively small volume of an organic solvent. Estimations are made by comparing the color of the mercuric dithizonate extracted from the sample with that extracted from a standard. In the sample-site method the mercury is volatilized as the iodide and the latter is dissolved in a buffer solution from which the mercury dithizonate is extracted as in the camp-site method. The estimation is made by a similar comparison with standards or by comparing the color of the mercuric dithizonate with artificial standards prepared from Orange II, an azo dye. Except for the establishment of standards, the time required by an experienced analyst seldom exceeds 10 min for a camp-site determination and 5 min for a sample-site determination. Camp-site determinations are useful for commodity studies and intensive exploration programs; sample-site determinations are applicable to extensive and reconnaissance-type geochemical prospecting programs. The results obtained on samples taken along traverses above known mercury ore deposits in the California Coast Range and western Nevada demonstrate the usefulness of both methods in geochemical prospecting. The increasing use of the mercury content of soils, rocks, plants, or water in geochemical prospecting emphasizes the need for analytical methods which are sensitive and at the same time require a minimum of readily available equipment. Sensitive methods based on the absorption of ultraviolet light by mercury vapor are common in the literature31 12. Although none of these methods have been used to analyze the large number of samples required in geochemical prospecting, they could be extremely useful except for the expensive instrumentation usually required to make the methods quantitative Also, such methods are perhaps too sensitive for field use, especially around areas of possible contamination. Other methods involve the distillation of mercury from a relatively large sample and subsequent collection of the vapors in nitric acid6. The mercury is then estimated by titration with a suitable reagent such as thiocyanate. These methods are not trace methods because the actual amount of mercury measured is often as great as 50 to 100 milligrams. Also, such methods are unsuitable for geochemical prospecting because of the amount of equipment necessary and the time required. Still other methods involve colorimetry, and the sensitive reaction between dithizone and mercury (11).. is the basis for a number of reports on the determination of mercury in biological materials 5,7. Moreover, by the judicious use of solvent extraction and suitable complexing agents, the dithiaone method can be made almost specific for mercury. However, none of the dithizone methods have yet been applied to the determination of mercury in soils and rocks. In most colorimetric methods he sample solution

INTRODUCTION Surface mining and in situ leaching of uranium have the potential to alter ground-water quality around mines and leach sites. Of particular concern is the fate of uranium and its associated trace elements: molybdenum, arsenic, and selenium. We wish to under- stand the natural processes that control trace element concentrations in ground water and how these processes will influence dispersion of the elements from a mineralized zone, both naturally and during and after mining or restoration. For example, it is commonly recognized that the trace elements are soluble in oxidizing ground water but are insoluble, and can be precipitated, in reducing ground water. Thus oxidizing, metal-bearing water leaving a deposit could re- enter reduced ground, causing the water to be re- reduced and the trace elements to be, reprecipitated. In a sense, this is recreating the original mineralization process. To accomplish the above goals, we have (1) examined the theoretical controls of concentrations based on the available geochemical and thermodynamic data, (2) determined the major ion composition and oxidation-reduction status of Oakville waters because of the influence of these factors on trace element solubility, and (3) determined trace element concentrations and distribution in Oakville ground water. The last approach is used to evaluate how well actual behavior follows predicted behavior. This report focuses on two elements, uranium and molybdenum, because they exemplify the results obtained. The report also is restricted to a regional study of Oakville ground water. Results of more de- tailed study in and around major uranium districts in the Oakville and much of the raw data that support the conclusions in this report are presented in Galloway, Henry and Smith (1980). This report is part of that larger study, which concerned the depositional systems, hydrology, and geochemistry of the Oakville. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency funded the study, under grant numbers R-805357-01 and R-805357-02. Theoretical controls were determined by reviewing the available literature on aqueous chemistry and behavior of uranium and molybdenum. To aid in under- standing water chemistry, Oakville water analyses were run through a modified version of the computer model WATEQF (Plumer, Jones, and Truesdell, 1976). WATEQF calculates speciation of dissolved ions and determines saturation with respect to a variety of minerals. In the discussion below, ion activity products (IAP) are compared with the equilibrium constant (KT) for various reactions and mineral products. Values of log IAP/KT near zero indicate that the water is in equilibrium with a mineral. Values less than -1 indicate considerable undersaturation and values greater than +1 indicate oversaturation. Galloway, Henry, and Smith (1980) give a more complete discussion of the application of this approach to Oakville water chemistry. Eh-pH diagrams have been constructed or adapted from the literature to predict what form -- dissolved ion or stable mineral species -- uranium and molybdenum assume under various conditions. Construction of the diagrams has followed procedures described by Garrels and Christ (1965). This approach is particularly appropriate because the solubility of the elements is Eh-dependent, and Eh varies greatly within the Oakville aquifer. A number of assumptions or approximations are inherent in the use of Eh-pH diagrams and chemical models such as WATEQF and in the interpretation of water chemistry in general. Both Eh-pH diagrams and chemical modeling rely entirely upon available thermo- dynamic data, including free energies of formation and dissociation constants for various reactions. These values are known to varying degrees of accuracy. Most major ions and minerals are relatively well control- led; however, data for trace metals are much poorer. Thermodynamic data are not available for some minerals, and for other minerals, two or more divergent values exist. By necessity, we have relied on the judgment of others to evaluate thermodynamic data. Calculations by WATEQF and constructions of Eh-pH diagrams are based on an assumption of equi1ibrium. Equilibrium may not be comnon in low-temperature aqueous environments; at best, ground-water composi tion may be in a state of dynamic equilibrium, continuously changing due to changes in environmental conditions. Eh-pH diagrams show what phases are stable at equilibrium under given conditions; they do not prove that the phases actually exist. Many minerals persist or form metastably under conditions outside their equilibrium stability field. The kinetics of reactions, which cannot be evaluated here, are important in determining what phases occur. Kinetics may be less of a problem for ground water that travels and evolves slowly through a semihomogeneous matrix than for many other natural systems. Eh-pH diagrams show equilibrium fields only of phases included. They do not indicate anything about stability relative to phases not included in the diagram. WATEQF, obviously, cannot calculate the degree of saturation of a mineral not included in the program or for which the appropriate ions were not analyzed. Thus, a mineral that was not considered may be the most stable phase under a given set of conditions and may control the solubility of a trace element. "The major platinum producers in South Africa make use of electric furnaces for the melting of PGM bearing nickel - copper concentrates. To gain better understanding of the furnace operation, research was conducted at CSIRO Minerals in Melbourne, Australia. One aspect of the research project was the investigation of the factors affecting the electrical conductivity of melter type slags.Electrical conduction in slags can occur through two mechanisms: ionic and electronic. There is good understanding of the ionic mechanism. In slags containing high levels of iron, the dominant mechanism is electronic. There is limited understanding of the electronic mechanism and one of the aims of the research was to investigate this mechanism further.Experimental work was carried out on Al2O3.CaO.FeOx.MgO.SiO2 slags similar in composition to the melter slags. Conductivity increased significantly with iron oxide content. Above 20wt% FeOx, electronic conduction was significant and the conductivity varied with the oxidation state of the slag. As the iron oxide content was increased further, the electronic mechanism became more dominant. The conductivity reached a maximum at around pO2 = 10-7 to 10-4 atm., although this value was dependent on the total iron oxide content and basicity of the slag."

As fluids move through a wellbore, there is transfer of heat between fluids and the earth due to the diflerence between fluid and geothermal temperatures. This type of heat transmission is involved in drilling and in all producing operations. In certain cases, quantitative knowledge of wellbore heat transmission is very important. This paper presents an approximate solution to the wellbore heat-transmission problem involved in injection of hot or cold fluids. The solution permits estimation of the temperature of fluids, tubing and casing as a function of depth and time. The result is expressed in simple algebraic form suitable for slide-rule calculation. The solution assumes that heat transfer in the wellbore is steady-state, while heat transfer to the earth will be unsteady radial conduction. Allowance is made for heat resistances in the wellbore. The method used may be applied to derivation of other heat problems such as flow through multiple strings in a wellbore. Comparisons of computed and field results are presented to establish the usefulness of the solution. INTRODUCTION During the past few years, considerable interest has been generated in hot-fluid-injection oil-recovery methods. These methods depend upon application of heat to a reservoir by means of a heat-transfer medium heated at the surface. Clearly, heat losses between the surface and the injection interval could be extremely important to this process. Not quite so obvious is the fact that every injection and production operation is accompanied by transmission of heal between wellbore fluids and the earth. Previously, the interpretation of temperature logs',' has been the main purpose of wellbore heat studies. The only papers dealing specifically with long-time injection operations are those of Moss and White3 and Lesem, et al.' The purpose of the present study is to investigate wellbore heat transmission to provide engineering methods useful in both production and injection operations, and basic techniques useful in all wellbore heat-transmission problems. The approach is similar to that of Moss and White:' DEVELOPMENT The transient heat-transmission problem under consideration is as follows. Let us consider the injection of a fluid down the tubing in a well which is cased to the top of the injection interval. Assuming fluid is injected at known rates and surface temperatures, determine the temperature of the injected fluid as a function of depth anti time. Consideration of the heat transferred from the injected fluid to the formation leads to the following equations. For liquid, Eqs. 1, 1A and 2 are developed in the Appendix. These equations were developed under the assumption that physical and thermal properties of the earth and wellbore fluids do not vary with temperature, that heat will transfer radially in the earth and that heat transmission in the wellbore is rapid compared to heat flow in the formation and. thus, can be represented by steady-state solutions. Special cases of this development have been presented by Nowakl and Moss and White.3 Both references are recommended for excellent background material. Nowak' presents very useful information concerning the effect of a shut-in period on subsequent temperatures. Since one purpose of this paper is to present methods which may be used to derive approximate solutions for heat-transmission problems associated to those specifically considered here, a brief discussion of associated heat problems is also presented in the Appendix. Analysis of the derivation presented in the Appendix will indicate that many terms can be re-defined to modify the solution for application to other problems. Before Eqs. 1, 1A and 2 can be used, it is necessary to consider the significance of the over-all heat-transfer coefficient U and the time function f(t). Thorough discussions of the concept of the over-all heat-transfer coefficient may be found in many references on heat transmission. See McAdams5 or Jakob," for example. Briefly, the over-all coefficient U considers the net- resistance to heat flow offered by fluid inside the tubing, the tubing wall, fluids or solids in the annulus, and the casing wall. The effect of radiant heat transfer from the tubing to the casing and resistance to heat flow caused by scale or wax on the tubing or casing may also be included in the over-all coefficient. According to McAdams, on page 136 of Ref. 5>

The Tambomachay ore deposit (13°28'36.78"S, 71°57'35.98"W, about 6 km north of the town of Cuzco, Peru) consists of Cu hosted in arkosic red beds of the Kayra Formation (Lower Eocene). Bornite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite, covelite, digenite, malachite, and chrysocolla occur disseminated in thin layers and in veinlets. The occurrence of the copper ores in a part of the red bed sequence containing green reducing layers, the presence of organic matter in interstices between the hypogene sulfides, and the sulfur composition of the copper sulfides (δ34S values between -16.9 and -12.4‰ vs VCDT) pointing to bacterial sulfate reduction, are strong arguments to propose that mineralization was caused by copper-bearing oxidizing saline basinal fluids that precipitate copper sulfides when they meet reduced sulfur in an organic matter-rich horizon. Faults parallel to the regional Tambomachay Fault could have acted as feeders for oxidizing basinal copper-bearing fluids. Fluid migration was probably driven by tectonically-induced topography gradient. INTRODUCTION A number of red bed Cu occurrences are known in the Cuzco region in the early Eocene – early Oligocene San Jerónimo Group (Gregory, 1916; Carlotto et al., 1996, 2011; Loza et al., 2004). In the past, copper ores were extracted in several small-scale mines in the surroundings of Cuzco, including Tambomachay, Tipón, and Zurite in the Cusco province and Ushpa, Guilda, Giovanna, and Langui in the Sicuani Province. The abandoned Tambomachay Mine (13°28'36.78"S, 71°57'35.98"W), about 6 km to the north of the town of Cuzco (Romero et al., 2015; Salcedo et al., 2017, Fig. 1) was chosen as the main site for the present research aimed to better study the genesis of these copper occurrences. Results deriving from fieldwork, microscopic characterization of ore and host rock, and sulfur isotope determination suggest that the key factor for the genesis of the copper ores is that copper transported by oxidizing basinal fluids is trapped by reduced sulfur of bacteriogenic origin located in a part of the red bed sequence that shows intercalatins of green reduced horizons.

The conditioning of semifinished steel products such as billets, blooms, and slabs to remove surface defects before further processing to finished products is a necessary accompaniment to steel mill rolling operations. A knowledge of the kinds of defects which occur and of the conditions in melting, teeming, and rolling that may lead to their occurrence is favorable to the production of quality products. Surface defects may be classed as either of mechanical origin such as those that occur in the heating and rolling operations and include breaks, tears, guide marks, mechanical laps and the like, or they may have been in the ingot before heating and rolling. Examples of the latter are ingot cracks, blow-holes, scabs, and inclusions which lead to the numerous known types of seams and surface flaws. Most of the common types of surface defects and methods for their identification by visual examination or by the aid of macro-etch tests are well known. The conditions which caused their formation are also appreciably understood and this knowledge has been instrumental in the establishment of methods for metallurgical control. There are, however, defects of doubtful origin. In any endeavor to trace the causes for their occurrence, the question of first concern is: I. Whether they were formed in the rolling procedure. 2. Whether they existed in the ingot prior to rolling. In the case of semifinished products which are rerolled to finished products there is also the question of whether they were formed in the primary or in the secondary rolling. In metallurgical laboratories where numerous or routine examinations of the quality of rolled products are made over the course of time, there will doubtless be many puzzling cases of defect origin. Microscopic examination of the defects may, however, reveal a characterizing condition that can be used to classify them broadly with respect to their origin. Such a condition has been observed and, after detailed investigation, is described here with the thought that it may offer a usable and relatively simple solution to a bothersome problem. Basis For Classifying In this discussion the term "mechanical type defects" will be used to designate those that have occurred as a result of the rolling operations such as in rolling from the ingot to billets, blooms, or slabs or in rerolling to finished products. The term "steel type defects" will be used to designate those that were present in the ingot prior to primary rolling or that were in the semifinished product prior to secondary rolling to finished product. Uma superliga a base de Níquel, popularmente conhecida como Inconel 625®, foi estudada no presente trabalho. A Soldagem por Fricção e Mistura Mecânica (SFMM) aplicada a liga 625 foi realizada com velocidades de rotação da ferramenta entre 1200 a 200 rpm e velocidade de soldagem entre 1 e 1,5mm/s. O aporte térmico foi calculado como função dos parâmetros de soldagem empregados. Adicionalmente, análises metalográficas e de microdureza foram realizadas na seção transversal das juntas soldadas. A aplicação da soldagem no estado sólido foi efetiva e resultou em maiores valores de microdureza todas as juntas soldadas. Por outro lado, um aumento na velocidade de rotação causou um aumento do aporte térmico.

Gas-liquid chromatography has been applied to separating basic nitrogen compounds, such as pyridines and amines. Close-boiling compounds have been separated by exploiting structural and polarity differences, using selective liquid substrates dispersed on specially prepared solid supports. Development of these special supports was necessary in order to obtain symmetric peaks for basic nitrogen compounds; solution of this problem was important in applying gas-liquid chromatography to the analysis of basic nitrogen compounds found in shale oil. Attempts to analyze shale-oil tar bases by conventional gas-liquid chromatographic techniques, using Chromosorb4/ or Celite 545 as the support for a nonpolar liquid substrate, resulted in asymmetric peaks. These asymmetries were caused by adsorption of sample vapors on the solid support. Symmetric peaks were obtained when strongly polar liquid substrates were used on either Chromosorb or Celite. However, a solid support giving symmetric peaks only with strong polar substrates restricts the choice of substrate, and frequently, desired separations cannot be achieved.

"Present paper deals with the investigation of a Hungarian pumice. Grinding experiments were carried out in a stirred media mill for various residence time. Ground samples were tested with laser particle size analyzer to determine and calculate the material fineness (particle size distribution and specific surface area). The lime adsorption capacity was measured to monitor the reactivity. Alkali activated cement paste was prepared using ground pumice with various alkali activators. Cube shaped specimens were produced from the paste and the uniaxial compressive strength was measured at the age of 7 days. The resulted alkali activated material structure was investigated by XRD and FTIR. The results of the experiments show that pumice fineness has strong impact on its hydraulic activity, hence on the compressive strength and the structure of the resulted binder. Relationships between grinding fineness, material structure and strength of the raw and mechanical activated material as well as the alkali activated cement were revealed. INTRODUCTION Pumice is a natural pozzolan which can be used as raw material for cementitious materials in limited portion owing to its low reactivity. Furthermore, due to its mineralogical composition it can be used for developing a new environmental friendly binder, namely alkali activated cements (AAC) which are inorganic alumina-silicate materials with good cementitious properties (Almalkawi et al., 2017; Özodabas and Yilmaz, 2013; Najimi et al. 2018; Yadollahi et al., 2015). Despite being a rather recent research topic, many papers and books have been published focusing on various aspects of alkali activation. There is great variety of raw materials that can be utilized for AAC production. However, primary raw materials are very expensive and secondary materials are heterogenous in composition. Therefore, a more homogeneous and low price silicate would help to balance the properties and cost of resulting cement and easing the way for commercialization of AAC. However, the control of its reactivity is of great importance which can be realized using mechanical activation by grinding (Juhász and Opoczky, 1990; Djobo et al., 2016; Mádai et al., 2015). The goal of present paper is to investigate the effect of mechanical activation of pumice on the properties of the resulted alkali activated cement."

O setor Petróleo e Gás Natural vem tendo enormes gastos com as paradas de manutenção. Estes gastos estão relacionados à degradação sofrida por seus equipamentos de refino devido à corrosão. Uma possível solução seria a utilização de novas ligas de aço inoxidável ferrítico com elevados percentuais de molibdênio, o que teoricamente favoreceria um aumento da resistência à corrosão. No entanto, pelo fato dessas ligas serem aplicadas na condição como soldada mudanças microestruturais significativas podem ser geradas, além de considerar o fato da solda das ligas em estudo ser realizada com material dissimilar, e a diferença existente entre o metal de adição e a região afetada pelo calor (ZAC) pode propiciar ao surgimento do fenômeno eletroquímico conhecido como pilha galvânica. Portanto, o objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar o comportamento corrosivo na solda dissimilar de duas novas ligas de aço inoxidável ferrítico com diferentes teores de cromo e um elevado teor de molibdênio, ambas com adição de superliga de níquel, verificando a influência da pilha. O resultado da soldagem foi avaliado através de exames metalográficos e ensaios eletroquímicos. As micrografias do metal de adição utilizado na soldagem das ligas mostraram que o mesmo possui uma microestrutura dendrítica e os gráficos obtidos dos ensaios de Polarização Potenciodinâmica Cíclica não reproduziram para as ligas soldadas, o que foi melhor analisado observando os resultados dos ensaios de forma separada, para as regiões que constituem a solda das ligas, o metal de adição e ZAC. Sendo possível verificar a existência de uma maior resistência a corrosão no metal de adição.

A menu based spreadsheet template has been developed to determine annual cash flow, maintain depreciation schedules, and estimate labor and operating expenses. Sensitivity analyses may be conducted to determine the effect of productivity upon mining costs and the effect of selling price escalation upon rate of return. The advantage of this approach is that it can be used by a wide variety of professionals without extensive computer experience.

The ordinary well log is subjected to a great deal of criticism, much of which is well founded. Sometimes, though, the difficulty in interpreting the log is due to the fact that the geologist or engineer using the logs does not know the limitations of the drilling method used. The rotary drill, especially, has inherent limitations that make it difficult to secure definite information at all times. The identification of well-defined key beds is about all that can be expected from the rotary log. The formation in a drilled hole, as reported by the driller, has a direct relation to the speed with which the drill makes the hole or to the reaction of the various strata on the bit, called the "feel of the bit." When this is not thoroughly understood by the geologist or engineer endeavoring to interpret the log, the result is an erroneous correlation with other wells or a discarding of the log as worthless. General Terms Hard and Soft.—Hard and soft are relative terms. In the case of well logs, they are very misleading as they are used in connection with both resistance to abrasion and resistance to percussion. In technical rock classification, hardness is relative resistance to abrasion. The term brittleness is used in connection with resistance to blows. These terms are misleading to the geologist or engineer who is not familiar with both the cable-tool, or standard tool, method of drilling and the rotary method. In the case of the standard tools, the driller's report of the hardness of the formation is in terms of its resistance to blows. For instance, a cable-tool driller might be able to make from 30 to 50 ft. a tour in a brittle limestone, which he would call soft and at the same time he might call a relatively soft (from a purely mineralogical standpoint) gypsum hard, because it is somewhat elastic and is not readily broken by blows. The rotary driller would reverse the terms. The limestone is hard in that it resists the abrasive action of the bit, while the gypsum might be soft in that it is readily cut by the rotary bit. It is rare that wells drilled by the standard tools are correlated with those drilled by the rotary, but the technologist who has worked with well logs from one system might be misled when working with the other.

"The construction industry is witnessing an upsurge in demand by property developers to have basements incorporated into their residential and commercial development schemes. This is attributable to perceived improvement to aesthetic and commercial values of buildings by underground space, amongst property owners. This trend is compelling more owners of buildings with no basements to explore the possibility of creating underground additional space beneath their existing buildings. The creation of a basement beneath an existing building entails the installation of a reinforced concrete (RC) underpinning system, temporary works, bulk excavation to basement formation level and construction of the basement structure, with associated aesthetic finishes.The L-shaped segmental RC underpins are a common system of choice for such underpinning works. They are multi-functional; providing vertical support to the existing superstructure, providing lateral support to earth and groundwater, supporting temporary and permanent surcharge loads from adjacent structures and services, whilst also forming part of the basement slab. This paper focuses on the first function of the Lshaped RC underpins; capacity under vertical compressive loading from the superstructure. The most common industry approach for the prediction of vertical capacities of L-shaped underpins is the oldfashioned Meyerhof’s (1953, 1963) effective width method, which is based on the traditional bearing capacity theory, whilst accounting for correction factors for eccentricity and foundation depth.The traditional bearing capacity formula is surrounded by a significant degree of uncertainty; estimates are highly user-dependent, as capacity prediction is sensitive to the chosen angle of shearing resistance (?), while there are difficulties in accurately measuring the in-situ ??value of cohesionless soils. In addition, the effective width approach has been shown to be very conservative by many research workers. The segmental RC underpins presented in this paper have been designed with an alternative less conservative method, which involves the use of a recently proposed consistent work-hardening plasticity model calibrated with field-based tests on footings of various aspect ratios and relative embedment in sand. The paper highlights the principles behind underpinning works for urban basement construction, the design of L-shaped RC underpins with the recently proposed plasticity model and the advantages of the method over traditional bearing capacity solutions and pre-existing plasticity models."

"The National Safety Competition conducted by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior for the promotion of safety in mines and quarries, has just been closed for seventeenth consecutive year. Enrollment covered more plants than in any previous contest. Moreover, a larger volume of employment was represented than in the contests of previous years, and several new plants were enrolled for the first time. Six safety trophies are awarded annually in these competitions one to the leading plant in each of six groups. An anthracite, mine in Pennsylvania, a bituminous-coal mine in West Virginia, a metal mine in Tennessee, a nonmetal mine in Virginia an open-cut mine in Minnesota, and a quarry in Alabama won the 1941 trophies.To be eligible to win a trophy, a mine or quarry must have had at least least 25 men working under ground or in the pit for not loss than 100 days. The number of man-hours worked must total 30,000 or more. Mines or quarries having no accidents during the year are rated according to the number of man-hours worked. If there are no plants with accident-free records, the mines and quarries in each of the six groups are rated according to their accident-severity rates; the plant having, the lowest rate is declared the winner.The Sentinls of safety trophies presented to the winning mines and quarries in the six groups were donated by the Explosives Engineer magazine to promote safety in the mineral industry. They are held by the winning companies for 1 year or until won by other mines and quarries."

(Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) . THE manifold inconveniences resulting from the absence of a uniform standard of mass for determining the weight of precious stones have long been obvious. This lack has been keenly felt in commercial transactions, and those who have devoted time and research to the study of historic diamonds and precious stones have had frequent occasion to deplore the absence of such a standard in the past. In a paper read in Chicago in 1893, before the International Congress of Weights and Measures, held in connection with the World's Columbian Exposition, the writer suggested dividing the carat into 100 parts, and constituting a standard international carat of 200 mg. ; that is, 5 diamond carats or 20 pearl grains to a French gram, making 5,000 carats or 20,000 pearl grains to a kilogram. He also called attention to the fact. that while this would depreciate the present diamond carat or pearl grain only about 2.5 per cent., it-would abolish the troublesome discrepancies between the various carat-weights now in use, and could be easily explained and understood everywhere.1 The subject of the various diamond carats, their incongruity, and the resulting confusion as to the correct. weights of historic gems when definite records of them are searched for, has been fully treated by me in an extensive study of this subject in The Book of the Pearl.2 To the earnest and unremitting efforts of C. E. Guillaume, Director of the Bureau Internationale des Poids et Mesures at Sèvres, is largely due the eventual success of this eminently desirable reform, which he has constantly urged both by articles on the subject and by addresses delivered in Paris before the International Committee for Weights and Measures.2

"The Cannon Mine, a joint venture between Asamera Minerals (the operator) and Breakwater Resources, is located in the centre of Washington state at the eastern base of the Cascade Mountains. The mine complex is located three blocks south of the city limits of Wenatchee, part of an urban area with a total population of 47 000. The closest residence is 350 feet from the mine portal.The B-Neath zone is a narrow, high-grade, downward extension of the southern tail of the mine's main ore body, the B-North zone. It also underlies the northernmost portion of the B-West zone (Fig . I) . The ore is usually reasonably competent but completely surrounded by very weak rock consisting of shear zone and unsilicified sandstones and siltstones.The zone has maximum dimensions of 420 ft in thickness, 500 ft in length , and 200 ft in width . The economic reserves extend from the 70-ft elevation (elevation above sea level) to the 630-ft elevation and consist of about 1.3 million tons of geologic reserves (proven and probable) at an average grade of 0.33 ounces per ton.Acquisition and ExplorationInitial DiscoveryThe initial discovery of the B-Neath zone was made by Tenneco Minerals during July through September, 1984. Their 22-hole surface drilling program consisted of 18 200 ft of drilling. Tenneco Minerals had acquired the 91/2 acre lease from United Mining Corporation.Asamera Minerals subsequently purchased Tenneco's lease in July, 1985; Tenneco retained a royalty position which was later purchased by Echo Bay Mining.Follow-up drilling by Asamera Minerals consisted of both surface and underground drilling. Eight surface holes (7200 ft) were drilled commencing in December, 1985. Following evaluation of the geologic data, an access drift was driven on strike along the top of the ore zone on the 500 level. Diamond drilling from this platform consisted of 17 200 ft in 79 holes."

The presence of minute amounts of sulfur (10ppm) in nickel-base superalloys has been associated with reduced oxidation resistance and the premature spallation of protective coatings. Removal of sulfur by annealing these alloys in a hydrogen atmosphere has been successfully attempted by several researchers. This paper examines the fundamental thermodynamics and kinetics governing hydrogen desulfurization of elemental nickel. Limiting conditions for successful desulfurization are delineated. Assuming that the diffusion of sulfur is the rate limiting process of desulfurization, the effectiveness as well as time associated with hydrogen desulfurization is explored.

The optimal selection of machine or machine group for building processes is very important role of building planner during the process of building planning. During this process building planner have to analyze several factors influencing the final effective decision concerning this problem. There are several factors and criteria for effective selection of building machines. In our contribution there are analyzed: ability of machines to realize designed building process (quality aspect), duration of mechanized process (time aspect) and minimizing of energy consumption (cost and environmental aspect). Selected scientific methods and theories of problem solution can be divided into these groups: theory of system (creation of building machine selection method), multi-criteria optimizing method (analysis of mechanized building process from the point of more optimal criteria), queuing theory (application during the mathematical modeling of mechanized soil processes), method of scientific analysis (analysis of factors influencing final decisions), method of scientific synthesis (creation of optimizing method implemented into building processes and possible application in construction sector). Multi-criteria optimizing method were during our research work implemented into soil processes and selected building group machines (excavators and trucks), which are very often used in construction and mining processes. This method can be considered as a multi-level decision making process based on multiple parameters. In our contribution is presented key mathematical models for model example solution and software built in Java, which has been created as a support for method described in this contribution. Application of this method and software will increase the effectiveness of building machine selection from the point of key criteria of optimizing: quality, time and energy consumption.
