Flotation process intensification is often achieved through changing chemical reagent scheme or flotation machine or both, which likely brings a hefty burden to the flotation plants in terms of capital or operating expenditure. A novel approach to flotation process intensification is the use of acoustic sound, which has been demonstrated to be effective in improving the flotation of various mineral systems with different type of flotation cells. This approach was based on the dynamic stabilisation effect of acoustic sound on the flotation froth. The present work aims to understand the influence of various experimental conditions on the effectiveness of the approach. First, the effects of sound frequency and amplitude were studied with column flotation of silica particles. Results showed that the flotation performance was improved only within a certain range of frequencies and above certain amplitude. The study was then extended to the mechanical flotation of quartz particles with various size ranges and at two solids concentrations. With sound, the recoveries of different size fractions within the range of 20–212 μm were all increased. In particular, the recovery of 150–212 µm particles was increased from 0 per cent to approximately 25 per cent, demonstrating the potential for extending the upper limit of particle size in flotation by using acoustic sound. Furthermore, mechanical flotation of chalcopyrite particles at various collector dosages (50–150 g/t) was carried out with and without sound. Results showed that the increment of the final flotation recovery was increased with sound at different collector dosages. Overall, acoustic sound has the potential to be used as an effective and versatile method for flotation process intensification.

As the time allotted is short, we can present only a general idea of the oil laws in the Latin-American republics, as a supplement to Bulletin 206 of the Department of the Interior compiled under the direction of J. W. Thompson of the Bureau of Mines and entitled "Petroleum Laws of All America." We shall not discuss the European colonies in Latin-America nor the island republics. As to the countries discussed, we shall attempt to give the main features of such special petroleum legislation as has been adopted prior to the early part of this year; where no special petroleum laws exist, we must look to the mining codes for light on the petroleum policy. As the laws and regulations for the extraction of the metals are often difficult of application to, and are lacking in many essentials for, the petroleum industry, it is best for persons or companies desiring to enter, on a large scale, into the petroleum exploration and development of countries not having special petroleum legislation, to obtain a concession contract from the executive of the country under consideration, and to have the concession approved by the congress. If this concession, which would then be a special law, contains nothing contrary to the constitution of that country and does not infringe on vested rights of third parties, it should be reasonably safe. If in such country there is some doubt as to whether the petroleum subsoil is owned by the nation or the private surface owner, only public lands should be covered with the concession. Guatemala is the only republic in the group that discriminates directly against foreigners. Bolivia, Ecuador, Mexico and Venezuela require waivers of diplomatic protection.' Colombia requires foreigners to agree to be bound by its alien law. This paper is directed at the problems flowing from Australia's capital gains tax (CGT) on the disposal of exploration and mining tenements both in Australia and overseas. It will seek to identify the issues and give some idea of the dollar consequences of decisions lacking forethought. The paper should not only be seen in the context of Australian tenements. CGT applies to the disposal of any assets by an Australian resident anywhere in the world. Offshore incorporated companies are not necessarily free from CGT risk where it can be shown that control management and control of the relevant company is in Australia. Also the disposal by non residents of Australian tenements are potentially caught by CGT. Some will ask what has taxation got to do with a valuer who merely determines the value of assets. These days no determination can be blind to the consequences. Whether the consequences can encourage a movement in value is another thing dependent upon the circumstances; but? A role of an experienced taxation consultant is to point out parameters within which associated professionals can work. The parameters will vary from case to case, but these when clearly indicated may be of help to persons such as valuers. When one comes down to it real estate salesmen are never wrong. They have a feel for the market and almost through self fulfilling prophesies achieve sales at their guestimates. Whether they could have achieved higher considerations become virtually academic in the process. Of course I am not suggesting that tenement valuers can be compared to real estate salesmen, or am I? What is the value of a tenement? Is it the DCF/NPV type of generated value based on a large number of variable factors (ie what one may call the fundamental value)? Or is it what another may pay to purchase that tenement if it were on the market at an instant point in time? How big is the market, the quality of the bidders, the size of their purses, the needs of the buyer for comfortable fit, the premiums for foreigners, the standard of the marketing, the industry intelligence level of the bidders, the obligation to farm/sell down? The list goes on endlessly. OVER the past two decades, the Cr-Ni stainless steels, popularly termed 18-8 steels, have been used in ever increasing amounts in the aircraft, automotive, chemical, transportation, and building industries.' The contribution of nickel to these steels is associated with its strong austenite forming tendencies which assure good hot and cold forming characteristics, and with its beneficial influence upon corrosion resistance, especially in oxidizing acids. The adjustment of the chromium and nickel contents has been used advantageously in controlling the rollability and the response of the mechanical properties of these steels to cold reduction. With the advent of the jet age and the government stockpiling of nickel, considerable emphasis has been placed upon the development of satisfactory low nickel or nickel-free substitute austenitic stainless steels, especially for nonmilitary applications.2 Fer-ritic 17 pct Cr (AISI Type 430) stainless steel has been effectively substituted for the austenitic grades in applications with mildly corrosive exposure. However, the limited formability and ferromagnetic behavior of this grade do not permit its satisfactory use for many applications. To achieve better formability in a nenmagnetic steel and conserve nickel, a number of low nickel substitute austenitic grades of stainless steel have been developed in recent years. In most of these steels, manganese and nitrogen have been substituted for a portion of the nickel content, for example, 17 pct Cr-4 pct Ni-6 pct Mn (AISI Type 201), 18 pct Cr-5 pct Ni-8 pct Mn (AISI Type 202), and 16 pct Cr-1 pct Ni-17 pct Mn, all of which contain approximately 0.15 pct N.1 The precipitation of ferrite when large ingots of these Cr-Ni-Mn-N steels are heated to temperatures high enough for conversion to slabs on conventional universal slabbing mills has seriously affected the hot workability of these steels. This has been especially true in the case of the 16 pct Cr-1 pct Ni-17 pct Mn (sometimes referred to as 15 pct Cr-1 pct Ni-15 pct Mn) composition." Because it is possible that little, if any, nickel will be available for nonmilitary stainless steel applications in the event of a national emergency, a need has existed for a nickel-free austenitic stainless steel containing hot and cold forming characteristics similar to 18-8 steels and corrosion resistance at least comparable to the 17 pct Cr ferritic steel. The aforementioned deleterious effect of ferrite upon the hot working characteristics of the 16 pct Cr-1 pct Ni-17 pct Mn, steel indicates the importance of establishing the austenite-austenite plus ferrite phase boundaries as the first step in the development of nickel-free or low nickel substitute steels. This paper presents the data collected in an elevated temperature constitutional study of the Cr-Ni-Mn-N system at the South Works of the United States Steel Corp. Experimental Procedure The 300 compositions used in the investigation were melted in a 26 Ib induction furnace and cast in 3 14 in. diam by 18 in tall hot-tcpped ingot mo1ds.

The operation of Quarry and Aggregate sites are similar to factory production, since it contains sequential production processes, tasks and activities to produce the output product. Compared to the plant though, the quarry processes are generally not synchronized and controlled towards the overall throughput of the site in real time. Some quarries control parts of the production but do generally not utilize real-time technologies for the whole site and all its activities. This fact indicates a general improvement potential in increased productivity at quarry sites, but also unsolved challenges for the same reason. The main contribution of this paper is the presentation of a Lean based method for how to describe the processes to identify control improvement potential within a site. The aim of the identified improvements is to increase overall site productivity by optimizing site, fleet and machine utilization towards the overall throughput, and minimizing operational expenses and inventories. Further the paper exemplifies the method?s usability with field studies at operational quarry plants successfully identifying and quantifying potential wastes and improvements. In addition the identified productivity improvements based on increased control and automation indicate challenges and needs in wireless communication and sensing technologies.

INTRODUCTION Mount Isa Mines Limited operates a major mining complex at Mount Isa in northwest Queensland, Australia. The location is arid and remote, some 600 miles distant from the nearest port of Townsville on the eastern coast (Fig. I). Current mine production is 6 million long tons per annum comprising 3.8 million tons of copper ore and 2.2 million tons of silver-lead-zinc ore. Copper ore production is scheduled to increase to 5.8 million long tons per annum by 1973 and a new silver-lead-zinc mine is being developed at Hilton, 13 miles north of Mount Isa. The Mount Isa and Hilton orebodies occur in a single stratigraphic member, termed the Urquhart Shale. This shale is conformable with several other sedimentary formations striking north-south and dipping approximately 65º west. The silver-lead-zinc orebodies occur in bands conformable with the shale bedding and tend to be of tabular shape, varying in width from a few feet to nearly 200 ft. The copper orebodies occur in breccia bodies, locally known as "silica-dolomite", within the Urquhart Shale and tend to be more irregular and massive with widths up to several hundred feet. The detailed geology is described by Bennett (1 2). At present, production comes almost entirely from underground operations with only about 25,000 tons per year of carbonate ore from open pit operations. The mining method used in the copper orebodies is sublevel open stoping with pillar recovery by pillar blast before stope filling or by sublevel caving after stope filling. A large primary sublevel caving operation was also carried out until recently in one of the orebodies. The wider lead orebodies are mined by sublevel open stoping, with or without pillar recovery, while cut and fill stoping is used in the narrower orebodies. Details of the mining methods are given by Davies (3). The company's interest in open pit mining stems from a large open pit which was mined out in 1965 and a further large open pit planned for future production. In addition, the company is currently evaluating several large ore deposits in Australia and New Guinea. All of these orebodies would be mined by open pit methods and rock mechanics studies of slope stability are now a standard feature of all open pit evaluations.

Zircon sand may be reacted with sodium hydroxide at 600° C. to form sodium zirconate and sodium silicate. Sodium zirconate is water insoluble and so may be washed free of sodium silicate. The sodium zirconate may then be converted to zirconyl chloride by the action of hydrochloric acid and the zirconyl chloride crystals separated by cooling the solution. This approach produces zirconyl chloride of satisfactory purity with less cost than is involved in buying anhydrous zirconium chloride and converting it. This paper presents an analysis of the dynamics of bit wear on the productivity of the continuous miners. Two field surveys have been carried out. The first survey was to assess the impact of bit wear on productivity and production cost. The second survey was to study the wear characteristics of the cutting tool (i.e. magnitude, forms, and mechanisms of bit wear). Primary factors affecting bit wear is identified and laboratory experiments were carried out to study the effects of some of these primary factors on wear in detail. Results indicate that bit wear has a significant effect on the productivity of the continuous miners. Furthermore under the severe geologic conditions (i.e. cutting rock partings and roof and floor rocks) bit wear not only hampers the productivity, but also increases the production cost due to a higher number of bit consumption. This study also indicated that bit wear accelerates beyond 20% of the conical height loss which corresponds to 7% of the weight loss. This increase rate of wear is an indicative of higher abrasion between bit body and cutting material, resulting in a dustier environment.

In recent years the Australian gold industry has gone through a major expansion phase. The need for finance has led to adoption of different approaches such as the well known gold loan, forward selling, equity participation by suppliers and equipment leasing. During early periods of the expansion, significant new equity was raised chiefly for high risk exploration ventures. The major form of new equity finance was ordinary shares, often in 'No Liability' companies. The increasing capital requirement of the huge new development projects of the 1980s also spurred the use of debt finance. This trend was accelerated as high inflation and the taxation advantages of debt finance made borrowing attractive. This paper reviews major financing techniques used by the Australian gold industry with particular emphasis on the innovative financing techniques initiated recently. An analysis has been undertaken of the effects on the industry of issues such gold loans, forward selling, equity participation by suppliers, fly-in fly-out operations, contractor mining and equipment leasing. In order to achieve a better understanding of the innovative financing techniques, a survey of already published financial data from well known Australian gold mines was carried out. Data was collected from various published financial reports of gold mining companies. In addition, a questionnaire survey was sent to gold mining companies to assist the collection of further information. The results of this study show that there are a significant number of gold mines variously using gold loans, forward sales, contractor mining and fly-in and fly-out arrangements to finance their projects. Only four operations have vendor suppliers investing capital funds in their projects. Based on the findings of this study, conclusions and recommendations are drawn that these approaches are likely to be with Australian gold industry for some time in the future and will continue to be intensively applied to finance gold projects.

The application of the Cyprus Cyanisorb process was investigated using a pilot scale facility at the NERCO DeLamar Silver Mine (DSM) in Owyhee County, Idaho. The purpose of this process is to remove cyanide from the DeLamar mill tailings slurry prior to its introduction to the tailings impoundment. This will maintain the tailings impoundment solution in a detoxified condition and thus prevent migratory bird mortalities. The cyanide removed is to be collected and recycled to the mill. The process successfully recovered approximately 90 percent of the weak acid dissociable cyanide (WAD), reducing the effluent tailings cyanide concentration from about 300 ppm to less than 20 ppm. This was accomplished by stripping the slurry with air in a packed tower and recovering the volatilized HCN in a packed absorption tower. Data were obtained for the design of the full scale facility including the stripping and absorption towers, currently under construction at the DeLamar Mine site. Finally, test results indicated that the final pH of reneutralization can be optimized to provide for minimal gold and silver losses, while selectively precipitating unwanted metal impurities (Zinc, Selenium, Iron, and Copper) from solution

By determining the (220) pole figure for OFHC copper rolled to 96 pct R. .A., the occurrence of four texture components of the type (135) [211] was confirmed. It was found that the total volume fraction of material close to the four symmetrical orientations of this type is larger than the volume fraction of the other components put together. THE rolling texture of copper was described by early investigators1'" as a mixture of components of the (110)[l12] and (112) [11l] types. Other studies, still using the qualitative photographic method of texture determination arrived, instead, at orientations of the type (135) [533] or (135) [211] for copper3'4 and at the closely related "Z-texture" for a fee nickel-iron alloy.5 The prevalence of this type of orientation, near (123) [412], in the rolling texture of aluminum and of copper was later confirmed by means of quantitative diffractometer methods.' However, in a recent paper7 Jones and Fell stated that the (110) [112] and (112) [111] double texture was in better agreement with the measurements of Young's modulus for cold-rolled copper.' These authors also expressed their belief that the "roll texture" can be determined by means of two photographic quasi-fiber texture patterns taken with sheet specimens rotated around the rolling direction and the transverse direction, respectively. Jones and Fell found7 that the results obtained from such patterns for cold-rolled nickel did not agree with any of the orientations mentioned above, but they suggested that the observed diffraction spots may have been brought about by the overlapping of reflections due to the (110) [112] and (112) [11l] double texture components. Jones and Fell concluded that the (123) 14121 type orientation is inconsistent with their patterns. They also stated, without offering any supporting evidence, that this orientation is inconsistent with the (220) pole figure. "Ideal orientations" are often used for a very rough description of the principal orientations encountered in a texture, It is, however, well to remember the fact that, no matter how "accurate", these ideal orientations are only schematic representatives of a continuous distribution9, which often (as in the case of rolled copper) includes extensive orientation spreads. The attempt by Jones and Fell7 to use elastic modulus data in deciding between various ideal orientations in the rolling texture of copper neglects this fact. The inadequacy of two-dimensional "axis density figures" in describing orientation distributions in sheet textures was previously discussed.9 It was also pointed out9 that there is no reliable evidence to prove that orientation distributions derived by the "quasi-fiber method" from rotated sheet specimens are fully equivalent to the corresponding information obtainable from quantitative pole figures. The view that a sheet texture could be adequately determined by means of two photographic quasi-fiber texture patterns is obviously erroneous9. The question as to the consistency with the (220) pole figure of ideal orientations derived from the (111) and (200) pole figures is, on the other hand, certainly very relevant. Since no quantitative (220) pole figure for cold-rolled copper appears to be available in the literature, the following work was undertaken. Effective thermal conductivities of sandstones filled with stagnant fluids were measured using a steady-state technique. Data were obtained for seven sandstone samples, taken from four different locations and ranging in permeability from 18 to 590 md. The measurements with gases (helium, nitrogen, air and carbon dioxide) covered a pressure range from 0.039 psia to 400 psig. Data were taken for four liquids — n-heptane, methyl alcohol, 79.8 weight per cent glycerol-water solution and pure water at atmospheric pressure. The experimental results were used to evaluate the theoretical equations for predicting stagnant conductivities developed earlier 4 The low-pressure measurements permitted evaluation of the consolidation parameter bpDp/ks (necessary to utilize the theory) for the various types of sandstones. Using these characteristic values, the tbeoretical equations correlated well with the experimental conductivity data for the several fluids and rock samples. INTRODUCTION An aspect of heat transfer in solid-fluid systems of considerable current interest is the effective thermal conductivity of porous media. The stimulus for study of the subject arises from the need for sound procedures for designing thermal methods of petroleum production. The general system occurs when there exists a flow of fluid through the pores of the solid material. However, a logical starting point in developing a theory for predicting the effective thermal conductivity in the general system is to attack the special case when the porous solid is filled with stagnant fluid. Since the flow rates anticipated in thermal production processes are very low, such stagnant conductivities k,O are also of practical significance. Kunii and Smith4 recently reviewed the existing data for stagnant conductivities and proposed a theory for heat transfer in porous rocks. This leads to equations for predicting the stagnant conductivity as a function of the properties of the fluid and solid phases. The existing experimental information1-3,5,7,8 covered a range of porosities and agreed well with the theory. However, the available data were insufficient to examine critically the effects of two important properties on koe, — the thermal conductivity of the fluid and the pressure. The objectives of the present study are twofold: (1) to measure the effect on koe of (a) the pressure for gases, and (L) the thermal conductivity of the fluid kg for bloth gases and liquids; and (2) to determine for rocks of different porosities and permeabilities the apparent solid conductivity ks and the consolidation parameter bpDp/ks required in applying the theoletical equations. Measurements extrapolated to zero pressure are helpful in evaluating ks and the consolidation parameter. However, the extrapolations must be based upon data obtained at low pressures because in small pores the molecular conductivity of the fluid may be unusually depressed. This occurs when the mean free path of the molecules is of the same order of magnitude as the pore diameter, that is, in small-diameter pores at low pressures. The phenomenon has been studied recently by Schotte6in beds of unconsolidated fine particles. With particles in the size range of 45 to 200 microns, a significant reduction of kg with pressure was found even at absolute pressures greater than 1 atm. In the sandstones employed in the present investigation, pore diameters lower than those experienced by Schotte are likely, so that the effect would presumably be greater. SCOPE OF MEASUREMENTS Stagnant conductivities were measured for four types of sandstones using a total of seven samples. The Pittsburgh bed, lying at the base of the Monongahela series, is probably the most famous bituminous coal bed in the world; famous not only for the product yielded in mining, but also as a key horizon in the search for oil and gas. It is the most important coal bed in northern West Virginia from the standpoint of extent, thickness and regularity. The general section is shown in Fig. 1. Roof Strata The strata that superimpose any coal bed vary more than the coal itself, and the Pittsburgh bed is an excellent example of 'this fact. Obviously, there were several changes during the period of deposition of this overlying material. Locally, sandstone occurs above and in contact with the coal. Sometimes a shale, or a clayey shale, rests on the bed and is often overlain by sandstone. Throughout the greater portion of northern West Virginia, however, the basal member of the immediate roof is a black or gray clay, which is usually slickensided. This material is called "draw-slate" by the miner. The color is due to the carbonaceous matter and the slickenside is the result of pressure, or movement, which may have come during or subsequent to its consolidation. This part of the roof requires especial consideration, because it is not self-supporting after the coal has been removed from beneath. The roof coal, 8 to 24 in. thick, is left directly below the draw-slate to support it and also to protect the clay from changes in temperature and moisture in the air, thereby preventing disintegration. The clay or draw-slate quickly changes its physical character when exposed, and falls if it is not adequately supported. Timbers alone are not effective in holding up this material, because it softens, crumbles and falls around the supports. Timbers hold up only the material that is directly over the posts and crossbars. Mining, like most other businesses, is based upon capital assets; and the primary cap- ital of any mining company is its ore reserve. A company's survival and growth is, thus, dep- endent upon its ability to replace, increase, redistribute and to diversify its ore reserves. A Kennecott executive addressing a group of geologists in 1957 stated, "Management expects a geologist to find ore! That is the primary objective and the justification of the geologist in the minerals industry. There is no other function that we can rationalize." This is, however, a restricted point of view, and one which I an sure is not fully shared by mining executives or mine operators at the present time. Ore reserves are 'made' as well as 'found' and the geologist contributes to this process. A mining geologist engages in activity in- volving the study of geology in connection with the total mining operation. His major task is the adaption of geological knowledge of ore de- posits and rock behaviour to mining needs, and the application of principles of the science of geology to specific problems of finding, develop- ing and extracting of ore bodies.

THE following notes are presented in an endeavour to point out the disadvantages attending the use of chrome brick in reverberatory furnaces used in the treatment of materials that are too valuable to allow any great amount of metal absorption by the brick. Several years ago one of the large Eastern copper refineries decided to utilize basic material in place of siliceous material in the walls of their reverberatory furnaces for the treatment of very foul blister copper, as the latter rapidly corroded the siliceous linings. It was also expected that there would be less slag formation, with a consequent decrease in the cost of treatment and a reduction in the metal losses. Magnesite brick were first used, but while the corrosive action of the foul material was greatly reduced, and the amount of. slag formed was very much less, the magnesite proved to be unsatisfactory in certain parts of the furnace, because of its tendency to crack and span badly when subjected to the alternate heating and cooling that takes place in a reverberatory refining furnace. This made many repairs necessary, and consequent frequent interruption in the operation of the furnace, which, together with the high price of the magnesite brick, ran up the cost of maintenance to an unreasonable amount. It was, therefore, decided to substitute chronic brick for magnesite brick in the parts of the furnace affected. The results, as far as the reverberatory furnace was concerned, were very satisfactory. The corrosion due to the action of the foul blister was small and the amount of slag formed was no greater than when using magnesite, and the tendency to crack and spill shown by the magnesite was eliminated. Gradually the use of chrome brick was extended to all furnaces; those treating blister copper as well as those melting cathodes, and the results were so satin-, factory that the siliceous roofs were replaced by roofs of chrome brick except in certain places where experience showed a more satisfactory performance on the part of the silica brick.

PRIOR to 1936, the Ontario Refining Co. received all incoming blister copper from The International Nickel Company's smelter in the usual form of 460-lb. cakes, or slabs. These were received in open cars in lots of 250 pieces. At the refinery the cakes were unloaded onto narrow-gauge cars, for convenient handling and pickup by charging cranes. In March 1936, an investigation was started on the feasibility of trans-ferring converter copper in the molten state from the smelter to the refinery anode furnaces, a distance of 114 miles. Although common in steel practice, the transportation of blister copper in this form had not previously been attempted and a preliminary study of the various factors involved was therefore necessary. For this purpose, a series of experiments was made in which molten copper, removed at different stages during the furnace cycle, was held in a small portable holding furnace. This vessel was essentially a refractory-lined steel cylinder provided with ports for filling and emptying, heated by an oil burner. Dimensions of the steel shell were 3 ft. 10 in. diameter by 7 ft. 3 in. long, and thickness of refractories depended oil the design and combination used for the particular experiment. The vessel was filled with approximately 2 ½ tons of copper at a predetermined temperature, the lining having been preheated to a definite point by means of an oil burner. All openings were well luted and temperature readings were made every 15 min. by means of an immersion-type thermocouple. In this manner the rate of heat loss resulting with different refractory design could be developed. The ratio of exterior surface to weight of metal was taken into consideration in comparing the experimental results with what might be expected for a full-sized unit, and observations were also made on type and degree of slag accretion. It was not possible to get as much information on this latter point as desirable, but all evidence showed that the problem would be control of slag build-up rather than attack oil refractories.

Laboratory and pilot plant investigations have indicated that copper recoveries of 50% can be achieved with fine grinding and flotation of a copper reverberatory furnace slag, Microscopic and microprobe studies indicate that the recoverable copper is in the form of matte, chalcocite, and metallic copper; the percentage of copper in particles appearing to be copper-free was from 0.23 - 0.54%.
