Although the earliest use of rubber-tired haulage was in Illinois in 1936, the first unit of this type of equipment used in West Virginia was shipped into the state in 1938. All units placed in West Virginia mines have been of the shuttle-car type. The Katherine Coal Mining Co., at Lumberport, W. Va., was the second company in the United States to install shuttle cars and the Gay Coal and Coke Co., at Mt. Gay, W. Va., was the first company in the country to install the thin-bed type of shuttle car. On Oct. 8, 1940, nine companies in the state were using 41 shuttle cars, of which 10 cars at three mines were of the thin-bed type. All shuttle cars of the low type were in the southern fields and all of the high type were in northern West Virginia. At that time several units were in the process of delivery. The data in this paper were collected in the field by Mr. Schroder in connection with graduate work on mechanical loading of coal in West Virginia by mobile loaders. In the course of his field work he visited five mines in the state that were using shuttle cars. All of these mines were in high-volatile coal beds of strong structure. The more pertinent data obtained at the mines visited are given in Table I. The maximum distance of shuttle-car haul is the distance between the transfer station and the farthermost place. Tonnage per loading unit per foot of bed thickness is to some degree a measure of relative efficiency, especially if the different operations are working the same bed or have somewhat similar conditions. The Paranapanema Group was created in February 1996 when a group formed by the Brazilian pension funds acquired four companies dealing with nonferrous metals. The new Paranapanema Group, basically related to the tin and construction business, became the sole Brazilian primary copper producer, the second zinc producer and one of the most important producers of copper products, mainly tubes and fittings. To put together such different companies, managed before by family groups and with different cultures and principles, was and still is a big challenge. The strategy of developing and consolidating it as an homogeneous group is based in three pillars: an increase in production, quality and technological improvements on products and market mix and a permanent cost reduction program, using all the potential synergies founded.

Mine waste facilities, and in particular tailings impoundments, are one of the highest risk aspects of any mining venture. There are far too many recent examples of how real and/or perceived physical or environmental impact from one of these facilities has had enormous economic impact on both the specific project and the overall parent mining company. In many cases, such dramatic impacts have followed a period where a due diligence of the mine had been carried out (e.g. in an acquisition, merger or similar) or an internal or otherwise audit had taken place. Consequently, it is suggested that there is a need for an audit/due diligence framework to assist those processes in terms of assessing mine waste facilities. This paper presents a recommended framework for completing either an audit or due diligence assessment of mine waste facilities under a number of typical scenarios. The framework will be of relevance to reviews carried out prior to mine construction, during operations and for mines that have been in a care and maintenance position and are to be re-opened. Concepts of risk management are introduced as an essential part of the recommended framework. The paper should be of value to current and prospective mine owners involved in stewarding an area of significant risk to viability of their mining venture. The paper should also interest prospective lenders to these ventures.

THE high tension belt conveyor is introducing a new and tremendously expanded era of low cost bulk material handling. High tension belt conveyors are generally those installations involving very long centers, high lifts, or drops, in which the belts are stressed up to their maximum tension values, and further, where the belt construction provides tension capacity far beyond what is possible with conventional belt constructions. With these high tension installations, the magnitude of the forces involved demands careful refinement of accepted design practice in order to achieve optimum balance of all factors. No attempt will be made to evaluate the relative merits of belt conveyor haulage with other means of transportation. For present purposes, it is assumed this has already been done in favor of belt conveyor. Neither will any attempt be made to evaluate the various conveyor belt constructions now available or to balance the advantages of various types of mechanical equipment. It is also assumed that the basic haulage information on which the conveyor design is based is accurate and complete. A sustained maximum, uniform load on the belt at all times must be achieved through proper feed control and the use of adequate surge storage to level the peaks and valleys of any varying demand for the material being handled. General Belt Capacity Considerations The belt conveyor capacity tables published by various belting and conveyor equipment manufacturers vary to a considerable degree, and the ratings given are quite conservative. Of necessity, these published ratings are based on the handling of average materials under average conditions. In applying a high tension belt, all possible capacity from the belt must be obtained in order to hold its width to a minimum and thereby limit the initial cost. Two factors are involved, loading to maximum cross section area and traveling at a maximum practical speed. Belt Loading: Proper treatment of the loading of the belt will result in maximum cross section to the load, and published capacity ratings can be exceeded, sometimes by appreciable margins. On the 10-mile conveyor haul used in the construction of Shasta Dam, California, although the rated capacity of the belt line was 1100 tons per hr, at times the system handled peak loads of 1400 tons per hr, almost 25 pct better than the rated capacity. One of the large coal companies has been able to exceed rated capacity by as much as 50 pct. Loading conditions which must be controlled are: 1. Large lumps must be scalped off and rejected or the load must be primary crushed before being placed on the belt. 2. The material weight per cubic foot must be accurate, must be known for all the materials being handled, and must be known for the complete range of conditions of the individual material being handled. Long centers and high lifts magnify small differences into serious proportions. 3. Uniform feeding to the belt is most important. Various types of feeders are available, which can be used to place a constant predetermined volume of material on the belt, or, where an appreciable range of material weight exists, through electrical control actuated by current demand, to place a predetermined uniform tonnage on the belt. One long slope belt in a coal mine in Pennsylvania is being fed at three separate stations with the controls so arranged that whenever the maximum load is going onto the belt from the first station, the other two stations automatically cut out. Whenever the load from the first station drops back, the other two stations again automatically cut in. 4. Careful design of the chutes and skirts is necessary to get the load centered on the belt with a minimum of free margin along each edge. Some free margin at the edge of the belt is necessary to prevent spillage, but if the load can be kept accurately centered, this free margin area can be reduced, and more material can be carried on the belt. What can be accomplished in this respect will vary widely, depending on the nature of the material being hauled. The chute and skirt design must also protect the belt. 5. The design of chutes and skirts should also get the load traveling in the same direction and close to belt speed, so that the load comes to rest on the belt as quickly as possible. The design of the chutes and skirts is worthy of careful study, and after a system is put into operation it should be experimented with to get the best results. Belt Speed: High belt speeds should be used in high tension work. Obviously, high belt speeds enable haulage on a narrower belt, reducing initial cost. The land-pebble district of Florida, which in 1928 supplied 96.7 per cent of the phosphate production of that State and 82 per cent of the domestic requirements of the United States, is centered in Polk and Hillsboro Counties about 30 miles east of Tampa The deposits are unconsolidated sediments occurring as beds of phosphate matrix overlain by a mantle of barren sands and clays. The matrix consists of a mixture of Sand (quartz grains), clay, and phosphate rock in which the coarsest sand is much finer than the coarsest phosphate; that is, the sand is segregated in the fine material. Before the introduction of classifiers the concentration consisted of log washing, and screening at about 20-mesh, which was usually the finest size that could be taken to maintain commercial grade, 66 per cent B. P. L. (bone phosphate of limey or more. When classifiers were introduced some of the fines that had escaped at the head of the washery and some of the minus 20-mesh material isolated during the rushing and formerly lost supplied the feed.

NZ Steel's flushing slag typically contains 1.2 per cent V203. Extraction of vanadium from powdered slag using a salt (NaCI or Na2CO3) roast/leach process was investigated. With NaCl, optimum extraction conditions were a charge containing 10 per cent NaCI, roasting in air at 875°C for 4 hours, followed by leaching in dilute H2SO4. Extractions were typically 30-50 per cent. NaCI roasting did not chemically attack the slag; the phase transformations that occurred were due to high temperature oxidation. Slag particle size had a significant effect on extraction.Optimum conditions for extracting vanadium by Na2C03 roasting were 20 per cent Na2CO3 in the charge and roasting in air for 3-4 hours at 850-875°C followed by water leaching.Na2CO3 roasting involved chemical attack that resulted in the formation of perovskite (CaTiO3) and carnegieite (NaAISiO4).The extent of vanadium extraction depended on the amount of Na2CO3 added and the original slag SiO2 content.Compared to the separate roasting treatments, simultaneous treatment with NaCI and Na2CO3 gave lower vanadium extraction, while requiring considerably higher roasting times and temperatures.

The Rhodococcus opacus microorganism was evaluated as a biocollector for flotation of barite. The electrophoretic behaviour of the mineral, before and after R. opacus interaction, was evaluated and showed that the cells adhesion shifted the mineral zeta potential curves. Adhesion tests were suggested a high affinity of the bacteria for barite. The experiments of the adsorption rate of the R. opacus on the mineral surface showed fast kinetics, achieving a maxim of cell adsorption after 5 minutes. Adsorption isotherm curves for barite could be categorized as Langmurian (L) type II. The best bioflotability results for barite achieved values around 75% for a R. opacus concentration of a R. opacus concentration of 250 ppm in the pH around 5.0. The studies were compared with the flotation of barite using a traditional collector. The bioflotation experiments were discussed considering the obtained adhesion tests. The results were supported by the Thermodynamic approach for selected pH values. The fundamental flotation studies showed the paramount potential that R. opacus presents as a biocollector and its possible application in the mineral flotation industry.

[A study of mining methods and underground practices as they influence injury from falls of roof or coal reveals data as to the location in the mine where such injuries occur with the greatest frequency and as to some of the methods and practices which are in use for the prevention of injury. This paper, which presents statistics bearing on the frequency and place of occurrence of accidents and, discusses regulations and practices which have resulted in a low frequency rate from falls of roof and coal in a few representative mines takes its information from mine-accident reports and from the results of studies conducted in a group of 80 mines in the bituminous coal fields of western Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. The statistics from this group of mines cover periods of one to four years but average 2 years and 7 months. During this time these mines produced over 110,400,000 tons of coal, equivalent to one-fifth of the annual production of all bituminous mines in the United States. The coal beds of the mines in the group studied are mostly flat, with local pitches of moderate degree. A number of mining plans are in use, each of which follows a general system of multiple entries, cross entries, and rooms. Room and pillar in panels either advancing, retreating, or half advance and half retreat and the block systems are employed. The methods of pillar extraction are by splitting, slabbing, pocket-and-stump, and open end. It is hoped that in presenting some of the details of the methods and practices at particular mines of this group which have commendable records in the prevention of injury some good may accrue to many other bituminous mines which 'nave similar natural conditions.]

The entire production of Colombia for 1927 was that from the Tropical Oil Co. concession. Production was approximately 14,000,000 bbl., of which 12,081,000 bbl. were exported from the Mamonal terminal of the Andian National Corp. near Cartagena. The balance represents that refined and used or marketed within Colombia. As production in 1926 was only 6,443,540 bbl., the increase has been more than 100 per cent. This is partly due to the looping of the pipe line from the concession to the coast, and the resultant increase in capacity to 50,000 bbl. per day, and also to increased domestic sales. The refinery at Barranca has been doubled in capacity, and it is understood is now handling 5000 bbl. of crude daily. This gives the producing field a potential outlet of 55,000 bbl. daily. The Tropical Oil Co. completed 82 wells in 1927, with one abandoned for drilling difficulties. The average daily initial production was 1136 bbl. per well. The largest well is reported to be No. 173 La Cira, rated as 5000 bbl. initial. Most of the wells were drilled on the Infantas and La Cira structures, the latter located en echelon to the northwest of the main Infantas anticline, and separated from it only by a low saddle. Drilling operations on the Llanos fold, also en echelon with Infantas but to the southeast, and at San Luis, bearing about the same relationship to the Umir Hills uplift, are still more or less in the exploratory stage. The four structures mentioned cover approximately 15,000 acres, on which there are at present 223 producing wells. Drilling has been better than 92 per cent. successful since starting operations on this concession. Allowing 15 acres per well, which is 50 per cent. more than good practice in the Mid-Continent fields, there is thus room for 1000 wclls, which at the recent rate is a 10-year drilling campaign. This does not take into consideration the known deeper oil zones, which have not been prospected, but which are uniformly petroliferous at their outcrops to the eastward. It is estimated that with the enlarged pipe line capacity, as well as increased domestic consumption, the production for this country will be about 20,000,000 bbl. for the current year of 1928. President Allende says he will expropriate all American investments in Chile and he's already well on the way to accomplishing this objective. What the average observer doesn't realize is that this has not only created big lossess for the copper companies. It could also take a chunk out of the U.S. taxpayers' pockets. Premier Castro expropriated the U.S. taxpayers' investment of over $100 million in the Nicaro (Cuba) nickel and cobalt operations-and U.S. Government protest over the loss was never heard above a whisper. Where the taxpayer comes in today is through the Overseas Private Investment Corporation, which was set up to guarantee U.S. companies' foreign investments against losses due to political changes. As of now, metals firms hold more than $300 million worth of obligations against this U.S. Government agency. The agency itself may not be able to raise more than $85 million, and a supplemental appropriation may be needed to meet its guarantees.

The kinetics of hydrochemical oxidation of antimonite in solutions of nitric acid was studied using the rotating disk method and the factor experiment design. The dependences of the antimonite?s oxidation rate on concentration of nitric acid solutions, temperature, disk rotation frequency, and duration of interaction were determined. The adequate kinetic models allowing calculating the specific oxidation rate at any combination of the values of the influencing factors were obtained. The oxidation process is found to proceed in a mixed mode, close to chemically controlled. Gradually, as the sediments of elemental sulphur and Sb2O5 accumulate on the disk surface, the process becomes controlled by internal diffusion. The observed high (more than second) order of the oxidation rate with respect to the concentration of nitric acid was explained by the autocatalytic action of the acid reduction products. The apparent activation energy depends on the stage of interaction. At the initial stage (in a mixed mode of the process proceeding), it depends on nitric acid concentration and varies from 31.5 kJ?mol?1 (in 2 M HNO3) to 36.1 kJ?mol?1 (in 10 M HNO3). This trend indicates the weakening of diffusion limitations with a nitric acid concentration increase. When the process is controlled by internal diffusion, the apparent activation energy was found to be 14.5 kJ?mol?1. The obtained kinetic characteristics enlarge the database on hydrochemical oxidation kinetics of sulphides and can be used for the elaboration of the recommendations for the effective comprehensive exploitation of antimony-bearing ores and concentrates.

INTRODUCTION Present-day Mexican mining legislation involves, not only the latest minim enactment (August 1, 1026), but many other enactments and regulations, principal among which are the Constitution, the Civil Code, the Code of Commerce, the Foreign Law, the Mining Tax Law, and. the Civil Jurisprudence of Mexico--the last-mentioned being based in Dart on Supreme Court decisions. Ere Mexican Federal Government is supreme in mining legislation because, among other reasons, a large part of the revenue of the Government must come from the fiscal control of the mines. All circulars, decrees, and rulings that affect the mines not only have their origin in the Central Government but are administered thereby. This publication, for the calendar year 1959, contains statistical data on injuries and employment pertinent to metal mines, ore-dressing plants, and primary nonferrous smelters, refineries, and reduction plants. The Bureau of ,Mines is authorized to request data on injuries and employment in the metal-mining industry, and the information, voluntarily submitted by the operators, contributes immeasurably to the promotion of safety in the metal- mining industry. Every effort has been made to make the annual canvass as complete as possible. The data presented are classified according to the hind of ore mined and includes information on copper, iron, lead-zinc, gold-silver lode, placer, uranium- vanadium, and miscellaneous metals. A breakdown of miscellaneous metals by commodity is shown in tables 17 and 18.

The Bureau of Mines developed a hydrometallurgical method for recovering mercury metal from mercury sulfide concentrates. Sulfide flotation concentrate from the McDermitt Mine was leached in a cupric chloride solution at 80° C. The redox potential of the solution was maintained at 850 mV during leaching by chlorine sparging. Mercury extractions exceeded 99 pct in 3 h of leaching. After leaching, the pH of the solu-tion was increased from 1 to 4.5 to precipitate copper as atacamite. The pregnant solution typically containing 100 giL Hg was sent to elec-trolysis to produce high-purity mercury metal and chlorine for recycle. In a 200-A electrolytic cell operated for 24 h, current efficiency was 99 pct and the energy requirement was 0.9 kW·h/lb of mercury produced. Mercury removal from the waste stream was also investigated. Iron or zinc cementation, sulfide precipitation with H2S, and activated carbon adsorption all decreased the mercury concentration from 10 giL to 0.01 mglL, which is less than the Environmental Protection Agency limit on wastewater of 0.02 mg/L.

Seabed polymetallic nodules, which contain significant quantities of metals key to electrification such as nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu) and manganese (Mn) can be processed using several different metallurgical processing options, including direct smelting and subsequent hydrometallurgical refining of the copper/nickel matte; ammoniacal leaching (gas reduction or Cuprion); and acid leaching (often reductive). Many of these approaches suffer from reduced cobalt extraction, difficult physical performance, or overall circuit complexity in general, leading to increased risk to the overall project. SGS has considered the pressure acid leaching of nodules for further investigation, as publicly shared data on this processing route stem from the 1970s and 1980s, and are not always easily accessible. This article details the series of tests conducted and provides updated results obtained — high Ni/Co/Cu recovery with limited manganese/iron (Mn/Fe) — as well as comments on the potential treatment options on the product solution and residue.

THE problem of sheet metal formability is one which has received a vast amount of attention during recent years. In spite of the great amount of study and experimental work which has been devoted to this problem, many of its fundamental aspects are still not well understood. No generally satisfactory test has been developed which is capable of providing a reasonably adequate evaluation of sheet metal formability, particularly in borderline cases. Anomalies persistently arise in which a lot of supposedly satisfactory material exhibits excessive breakage when formed. This lack of suitable technological tests greatly hinders the design of new parts and the substitution of new materials in parts of existing design, frequently necessitating considerable costly trial and error experimentation on an actual production basis. When, at the beginning of World War II, it became apparent that mass production methods of forming would be required in the aircraft industry if the large numbers of military aircraft needed were to be supplied, renewed attention was focussed on the problem of sheet metal formability. It was widely recognized that the formability requirements placed on sheet metals had been steadily increasing in severity through the years, especially as greater and greater emphasis was placed on streamlined designs with the resultant freer application of doubly curved surfaces. The recent advent of several new high strength aluminum alloys of more limited formability than some of the older alloys also served to emphasize the need for new approaches to the problem. It seemed evident that progress in the technology of sheet metal forming would depend to a great extent on the development of more reliable criteria for the evaluation of formability. Although the problem is admittedly very complex, the most logical approach appeared to be through studies of the fundamental material properties of sheet metals, especially under complex stress conditions simulating those prevailing in actual forming operations. Most previous investigations have failed to make full use of existing knowledge of fundamental material properties, and in many instances have attempted correlations with properties which are now recognized as being ambiguous in nature. Accurate knowledge of the gas content of coal seams has always been important, according to the work of W. P. Diamond and J. R. Levine, 1981, but is becoming increasingly important for several reasons: Excessive gas emissions in the mine can create explosion hazards. Depletion of shallower coal reserves is forcing underground operations to greater depths where coal gas content is often greater. Natural gas prices and the need for new energy sources make naturally occurring coal gas a potential resource of economic interest. Information on coal gas content will impact mine designs, mine ventilation system specifications, and the effectiveness of methane control procedures used. Accurate resource assessment is needed for projecting and designing potential gas utilization enterprises. The emphasis upon methane hazards in mining operations, and upon potential methane utilization, has led us to improve upon the procedures used to determine coalbed methane levels.

The study of the energy used in crushing operations has advanced from a period of perplexing confusion to one of greater clarity. Only within the last few years has any true conception of the work in crushing been possible, owing to the chaotic state of theoretical knowledge. For some 20 years a controversy existed between those advocating the Rittinger law and those advocating the Kick law. The Kick law now appears to be definitely out of the picture, and crushing efficiency may be based confidently on the Rittinger theory. There also seems to be a generally crystallized conception as to the meaning and nature of sub-sieve material. There is needed a simple, direct method for determining surface on a crushed ore product, and also a simple and accepted method for size determination on minus 400-mesh material. The Crushing Law The Rittinger(l)‡ theory of crushing was advanced in 1867 and the Kick(3) theory in 1885. While the Rittinger theory might have been accepted without much question and actually had been accepted by many investigators, a serious doubt as to its validity was raised by Stadler(10) who upon purely theoretical grounds proclaimed the Kick "law" as the true law of crushing. According to Rittinger the energy required in successive steps in reduction increases geometrically, while according to Kick the energy increases arithmetically. These "laws" therefore are at variance, and the establishment of the true law was recognized as of first importance. Many simple experiments have been made to demonstrate the application of the Rittinger theory to crushing, and it would seem that its simplicity should favor its acceptance. Experimental evidence, however, was not convincing, as no reliable data could be obtained on the finer material from a crushing or grinding operation. Gates,(13) Bell,(19)

A critical element of the Transbay Transit Center Program, the Caltrain Downtown Extension (DTX) will extend commuter rail service into downtown San Francisco and accommodate future statewide high-speed rail service. The DTX project includes 1.8 miles of underground construction, comprising significant sections of mined and cut-and-cover tunnel. At the request of stakeholders, an updated cost estimate was prepared early in the project?s preliminary engineering phase. Unsurprisingly, this yielded a cost substantially higher than the available budget. This paper provides a summary of the management processes and planning decisions taken to bring the project back to budget, resulting in a configuration which derives maximum value from available funding and retains maximum flexibility for future system expansion.
