The Stilfontein and Buffelsfontein Gold Mines, near Klerksdorp in the Transvaal, had accumulated a large amount of uranium-containing residue and, when the price of uranium rose in the 1970s, consideration was given to the possible recovery of this uranium. Preliminary tests showed that concentration of the uranium prior to leaching would not be economic. However, the pyrite in the residue could be concentrated by flotation, and the flotation concentrate could be roasted to pro¬vide both enough acid for leaching the uranium and a calcine from which the gold could be recovered. The feasibility study showed that a uranium operation of 270 kt per month would be most economically attrac¬tive, and a plant of that size was accordingly designed and built. In the first six years of its existence, the plant treated over 20 Mt of residue and produced about 3,5 kt of uranium oxide. During that time, the plant was con¬tinually being improved to make it more reliable and cost-efficient. This paper analyses the operation of the plant during its first six years from the viewpoints of its mechanical, process, and economic performance. The criteria on which the selection of the process was based are reviewed and compared with the actual performance of the plant, emphasis being placed on the leaching, solid-liquid separation, recovery, and purification stages.

ALTHOUGH considerable attention has been devoted to reaction mechanisms and equilibria of a number of endothermic reactions through which metals or their refractory compounds can be formed upon heated surfaces, only a comparatively small amount of work has been done to develop rate information for these systems. The interestin and very worthwhile work of Holden and Kopelman, Runnalls and Pidgeon,Dijring and Moliere, and Herrick and ICrieble4 is to be noted; however, their work was done under very specific conditions and the rate information which they have developed is not applicable to many systems which have been studied experimentally. That a more generalized approach is needed is shown by the diversity of these systems and of the experimental conditions which they require. These include the preparation of titanium, zirconium, tungsten, molybdenum, chromium, co-lumbium, aluminum, and silicon by decomposition or disproportionation of their halides, in some instances through hydrogen reduction; the preparation of nickel and iron by decomposition of their car-bonyls; and the preparation of copper by decomposition of the acetylacetonate. They may be carried out at temperatures ranging from 100" to over 2000°C and at pressures of from less than one mm Hg to superatmospheric. The physical mechanism of the overall process can be broken down into several steps, any one of which may be rate-determining; and the rate associated with each of these basic physical processes can be predicted. Consequently, by proper application of the present technology of rate processes, it is possible to arrive at a rate of metal deposition in the system of interest and to reach an understanding of the influence of' each major variable upon the deposition rate. It is the purpose of this paper to illustrate how this can be done and to present experimental results for a specific system for comparison with theory. The overall process of deposition of metal upon a heated surface which is immersed in vapors of a compound of the metal can be broken down into the following steps: 1) Transport of the reactant vapors to the surface. 2) Decomposition of the reactant in the immediate vicinity of the surface to a) establish chemical equilibrium if reaction rates are high; or to b) establish a dynamic equilibrium in accordance with the several reaction rates. 3) Diffusion of reaction products away from the vicinity of the surface, with or without simultaneous recombinations to form still other products. The overall process is said to be diffusion controlled if Step 1, or the equivalent Step 3, is slow; it is reaction-rate controlled if Step 2b is slow. When experimental evidence shows the reaction rate to be controlling, the well-known theories of Eyring' and others can be used as a basis for correlating and extrapolating the experimental data. Although these theories give only approximate estimates of reaction rates, they are of considerably greater value in correlating experimental data. Most deposition systems operate at surface temperatures sufficiently high that reaction rates near the surface are very high. Mass-transport rates then become controlling; and it is this regime of diffusion controlled rates which is most often of concern and Which will be considered here. When the system pressure is very low, i.e., in the micron range, then the transport processes are those of molecular movement, and the results of kinetic theory can be applied to specify a rate of arrival of reactant molecules at the heated surface. If the condensation coefficient can be estimated, then the deposition rate will be given by the product (rate of arrival) x (condensation coefficient), Conversely, experimental data can be used to determine a condensation coefficient, as was done by Holden and Kopelman' for the decomposition of zirconium tetraiodide upon a heated molybdenum surface, who found the coefficient for zirconium on molybdenum to be 1.0 at temperatures of 1382°C and above. In this pressure range, the geometry of the system. and in particular the distance between the source of reactant molecules and the heated surface, can exert a considerable effect upon the deposition rate;

IN recent years, two theories of the mechanism of flotation have received a great amount of attention. One of these is Ostwald's theory of linear flotation,1 according to which most collectors contain three active groups: a hydrophilic or water-loving, a metallophilic or mineral-loving, and an aerophilic or air-loving group. Under the action of these three groups, Ostwald considers a single ring of collector molecules at the three-phase air-liquid-mineral boundary sufficient to bring about the flotation of the mineral particle. Siedler, Moeller and Reddehase2 objected to this theory immediately after it was presented, but most of their objections were answered by Ostwald.3 Very recently, however, Wark and Cox4 have more adequately criticized this theory, and their criticism makes its validity appear doubtful. The other important recent theory is the "chemical" theory of flotation, proposed by Taggart and his coworkers,5 who maintain that "all dissolved flotation reagents, which, in flotation pulps, either by action on the to-be-floated or on thenot-to-be-floated particles affect their floatability, function by reason of chemical reactions of well recognized types between the reagent and the particle affected." In general, they appear to consider most flotation results to be brought about by purely chemical reactions between the collectors and the products of oxidation present

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has produced a generic in situ copper mine design manual, which contains a computerized cost model for in situ copper oxide mining. The model specifies (1) site-specific parameters, which must be quantified for mine design, (2) a method for minesite design based on those parameters, and (3) a procedure for assessing economic viability for the mine design. The menu-driven computer program performs calculations for developing commercial mine design specifications, as well as capital and operating costs. The default values are based on 1986 dollars, and indices for updating costs are included. The program also provides discounted-cash-flow rate of return (DCFROR) and allows for sensitivity analyses for an in situ mining operation at any specific undisturbed copper oxide deposit. This report is to be used with the 1990 version of the computer program, which has been made user friendly. It describes the flies, tutorial, input phase, help function, and monitor display of all calculated values and of the DCFROR table. The monitor-displayed discounted initial value of investment and annual operating costs are defined. The dual rate-of-return situation and sensitivity analyses are also briefly discussed. Information is provided on obtaining the computer program on diskette.

In January 2008 Chirano Gold Mines Limited committed to expansion of the Chirano Gold Project from its existing design capacity of 2 Mtpa ROM ore to a new design value of 3.5 Mtpa. In addition to increased throughput, the design had to contend with increasing ore hardness and competency, while at the same time make cost effective use of existing equipment with minimum disruption to existing production. The solution adopted involved some novel approaches including tertiary crushing and operation of the SABC circuit in overflow ball mill mode and parallel elution with a common acid wash column. This paper describes the approach taken to the design of these elements to achieve a cost effective and safe capacity expansion.

This paper relates cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&A) risk management theory to actual coal enterprises in China. The 3 phases of M&A are preparation, implementation and integration. By using the Analytic Hierarchy Process and fuzzy evaluation methods, we will try to establish a model to assess risks of the cross-border M&A of China?s coal enterprises. We then apply this model to the case of Yankuang Group acquisition of the Felix Company and receive the assessment results. There are significant reasons for quantitative research on risks of cross-border M&A of China?s coal enterprises, such as effective prevention and risk-aversion, and facilitation of cross-border M&As.

The objective of this study is to simulate the isothermal filling up of moulds by a RTM process when adopting CV/FEM and VOF method and when also taking into account the presence of obstacles coupled to the effect of the thickness and reinforcement layers variation. The codes developed intended to ensure an optimal positioning of the injection points and of the vents and also to determine optimal injection pressures, in order to minimize the cycle times. These codes use a mesh generator proper to the team, allowing a discretization of the domain in triangular unstructured elements, with the possibility of a local refinement and inserts inclusion.

Composite ion exchange materials made of SnO2, TiO2 and MnO2 can be used to remove radioactive contaminants from nuclear waste streams. In several cases their selectivity and capacity are enhanced by mixing hydrous silica into the matrix. MnO2-SiO2 materials are especially useful for a number of reasons, such as their selection of heavy elements over caesium. Distribution constants and determinations of exchange capacities show that in many instances the properties of the composites are better than those of the oxides alone, while the presence of a chelating agent has been found to reduce the uptake of nuclides considerably. Methods are being developed for the bulk manufacture of the materials. Further work on sorption mechanisms is required to explain anomalous results, particularly the variation in exchange capacity for different elements and the ability of the oxides to sorb colloidal material in alkaline solution.

With the federal climate change legislation in progress, there is a need for demonstration-stage technologies aimed at providing clean energy from coal. Our research aims to experimentally illustrate the feasibility of capturing CO2 on a novel sorbent system from a gaseous stream. The gas is then released resulting in a regenerated sorbent and a pressurized stream of pure CO2 to be used for storage. The proposed sorbent is a ceramic honey-comb structured monolith coated with CaO supported on a high-surface area alumina. CaO is a natural acceptor of CO2 and our design ensures the physical stability and chemical reactivity of CaO over a large number of CO2 capture/release cycles. Furthermore, the use of the monolith ensures a uniform flow through the reactor, minimizes pressure drop across the reactor, and maximizes the surface reactive area. In this paper, we will present the results from a flow-through laboratory-scale reactor that establishes the efficiency of the proposed system to capture CO2. Future applications of the reactor include integration within the new-generation coal gasification power plants, such as IGGC, as means of providing decarbonized electricity.

If a coal mine producing two hundred thousand (200,000) tons of coal per year could effect a 2 per cent decrease in the percentage of slack there would be an additional 4,000 tons of prepared coal produced. Most operators will say that these prepared sizes of coal are worth about $3.00 more per ton to them than the slack or in other words an additional $12,000.00 pier year profit could be made by a decrease of 2 per cent in slack. A large tipple with all the finest modern equipment of shaker screens, conveyors, box car loaders, etc., can only produce a grade of coal dependent upon the coal delivered by the mine car at the top of the tipple. In the mine, coal-cutting machines have been doing their part for many years toward decreasing the percentage of slack. There is therefore, only one phase of production left where real effective work can be done, that is, intelligent and constant supervision of preparatory work and shooting. The quality of coal is really entirely dependent upon the kind of coal produced at the face in the mine. Our problem is therefore, at that place. The writer is thoroughly convinced that with the proper placing of holes the use of correct amount of a suitable explosive, thoroughly tamped, with the bug dust entirely removed from the mining, a decrease in slack can be effected. We will take up this problem under five headings. First-The proper placing of bore holes. Second-The proper amount of permissible powder. Third-The proper loading and stemming of the shot.-Cushing shooting. Fourth-The necessity of removing the bug dust from the mining. Fifth - The - standardization of rounds. First-The Proper Placing of Bore Holes. The most important thing and the real secret of successful blasting of coal is the proper placing of the bore hole. This results in the correct balancing of the shot and the securing of the maximum efficiency of the explo¬sive. If you are operating a mine with a 6-foot coal seam, you most likely are using a 6-foot cutter bar on the coal cutting machines. You should use three holes to properly bring down the coal. (1) A center shot in the middle of the room drilled flat, or rather parallel to the mining-the heights of this hole will depend upon the top parting. If the coal is frozen to the roof, it will be necessary to have the hole as close to the roof as possible. If there is a free parting, the hole may be placed lower but not over twelve inches from the roof. (2)

A N alloy of 50 pct Ni-50 pct Fe is currently manu- factured in tape thickness down to 1/8 mil. In the annealed form, this alloy produces an almost square hysteresis loop. This has generally been related to the fact that by proper rolling and annealing practice a sharp cube, (100) [OOl], texture can be developed. As part of a program directed toward an understanding of the relationships between magnetic properties and structure of tape core materials, analyses were made of preferred orientations in tapes of various thicknesses. Annealed tapes of this alloy in 2, 1, 1/2, ¼, and Y' mil gages were acquired from commercial sources. Pole figures constructed for the 2 and 1 mil tapes showed the expected sharp cube texture. However, the ½, ¼, and ? mil annealed tapes showed no evidence of any preferred orientations. A comparison of two transmission patterns is shown in Fig. 1. The origin of the absence of texture in the tapes of less than 1 mil thickness was explored in some detail. The basic questions were whether the heat treatment for the thinner tapes was wrongly selected, whether the initial cold worked textures were different, or whether the actual thickness of the tape exercised some influence on its annealing characteristics. Quantities of the five gages of tape were acquired in the as-rolled condition just prior to the final anneal. Pole figures of the cold worked textures were constructed for each of the tapes. "Due to complex mineral composition and fine ingrained nature concentration of iron ores deposited in Mikhailovskoye mine field requires application of wet magnetic separation to produce 65–66% Fetotal and 8.2–8.6 %SiO2, concentrate with 90–94% of material being –0.044micron grain size. Higher specific consumption of ROM, increase of production costs with concurrent reduction of output - those are inevitable side effects of desired concentrate grade improvement. Large-scale complex analysis and surveys have been carried out aimed at concentrate grade improvement with concurrent output increase. Classification of feed in hydraulic cyclones (hereinafter referred to as hydrocyclones) has been the bottleneck for improvement of processing throughput and concentrate output. Hydrocyclone classification efficiency is 50-60% and further improvement is practically impossible. Actual circulating load may achieve as much as 500-600% while the optimal rate is 200-250%. Application of wet fine screening has been considered to improve iron ore concentrate grade. Objective of this work is to design processing flow diagram for unoxidized ferruginous quartzites with implementation of wet fine screening. Large-scale tests have been run in Crushing and Concentrating Plant with application of wet fine screening stage. These tests included application of wet fine screening in 2 and 3 stages of classification to separate desired grain sized material; replacement of hydrocyclone classification with fine screening; application of fine screening as additional stages to concentration process and screening of final concentrate. Testing Methods. EXPERIMENTS AS WELL AS THEORETICAL RESEARCH HAVE BEEN APPLIED FOR THE PURPOSES OF THIS WORK; INCLUDING MAGNETIC, GRAIN-SIZE AND CHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF CONCENTRATION PRODUCTS. MODERN ANALYTICAL DATABASE HAS BEEN APPLIED TO STUDY WET FINE SCREENING FEATURES, MINERAL AND PHYSICAL COMPOSITION OF CONCENTRATION PRODUCTS. Work Results: - analysis of wet fine screening application for iron ore concentration. - technological solutions enabling to improve slurry classification of fine ingrained low magnetic iron ore have been developed. - effective process flow diagram including fine screening has been designed based on the feasible and reasonable arrangement solutions."

The 1943 designation of districts for the Transactions† has caused some confusion because of the elimination of the West Central Texas district and the allocation of the counties of this district to the North Texas district and the North Central Texas district. The North Central Texas district as herein defined includes the counties of Brown, Callahan, Cole-man, Comanche, Coryell, Eastland, Erath, Fisher, Hamilton, Hood, Jones, Lampasas, Mills, Nolan, Palo Pinto, Parker, San Saba, Shackelford, Stephens, Stonewall, Summerville, Taylor, Throckmorton and Wise. These counties as listed are the counties of District 7B, State Railroad Commission. This district covers the south central crest and the west flank of the Bend flexure north of the Llano uplift. The west flank of the Bend flexure is on the east boundary of the Permian Basin of West Texas. The North Texas district, District No. 9, State Railroad Commission, includes the counties of Archer, Clay, Cooke, Foard, Hardeman, Jack, Knox, Montague, Wichita, Wilbarger and Young. The area of this district covers the crest and south flank of the Red River uplift and the north central crest of the Bend flexure. The greater part of the oil and gas produced in the past from the North Central Texas district has been from Pennsyl-vanian strata. Some oil and gas has been produced from the lower Permian (by the latest selection of the Pennsylvanian-Permian boundary') and minor amounts from the Mississippian and Ordovician sediments. Increasingly important quantities of oil and gas are to be expected from the older sediments by deeper development in proven fields and by new discoveries. Most of the oil and gas in the district has accumulated in localized, well-defined structural traps in limestone and sandstone reservoirs and in traps due to stratigraphic changes in sedimentation, mainly porosity traps in limestone and sandstone lenses, both usually associated with some structural feature. The Stripper Well Premium Plan as adopted by the office of the Federal Price Administrator has been an aid to the producers of stripper wells. The producers are pleased to receive the subsidy to prolong the plugging of wells, but they are not too pleased with the subsidy plan in principle. Most independent operators are in favor of, and think they are entitled to, an increase in the market price for oil. The price is not adequate to meet the requirements of the average independent operator with the continued advance in production, development and wildcatting costs. Old and new pipe lines for oil and gas leading out of the state are removing reserves at an alarming rate. Curves showing the rate of discovery versus production and pipe-line deliveries in and out of the state make a cross that sooner or later will be fatal to the state. Wildcatting not only needs a price increase but every other available incentive and encouragement.

ASH in coal has always been regarded as an undesirable substance, as the heat content of a coal decreases in direct proportion to its ash content. It represents so much inert material that has to be transported, handled when the coal is burned, and finally disposed of. W. R. Roberts, in an address before the Engineers' Society of Western Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh, on Sept. 29, 1925, said that on an annual output of five hundred million tons of coal, a reduction of 3 per cent. of ash means fifteen million tons of refuse and a decrease of $30,000,000 in freight charges. Ash also often prevents efficient utilization of the coal through the formation of clinker caused by the melting of the ash constituents when subjected to heat. The mineral constituents of coal may be of such nature as to make the coal unsuited for specific uses, as for instance, high-sulfur coal for making metallurgical coke. While the usual proximate analysis of coal gives the amount of ash, it gives no information as to the nature and composition of the ash nor of the mineral constituents from which the ash is produced. For the efficient washing of coal to remove ash-forming constituents it is desirable to know the composition and distribution of the ash-forming constituents. Obviously such information is also desirable for the most efficient utilization of coal.

This paper introduces the technical characteristics, transformation scheme and production practice of the project in which Copper P-S Converter was replaced by Bottom Blowing Continuous converting for the first time, and introduces the technical achievements obtained by the project. The application practice proves that bottom blowing copper continuous converting technology can completely solve the problems of fugitive off-gas pollution in the ladle transportation, large amount of flue gas and fluctuation of flue gas caused by P-S converting. Comprehensive energy consumption and operating costs of producing blister copper, safety and environmental risks are greatly reduced, and economic, environmental and social benefits are significant. It is one of the preferred technologies for upgrade and to replace P-S converting technology. INTRODUCTION At present, more than 80% of copper production capacity is still using the P-S converting technology with a history of more than 100 years. During P-S converting process, melted copper matte needs to be transported by ladle, and it needs to rotate the furnace body several times, causing a lot of serious environmental and safety risks such as SO2 flue gas emission and low-altitude SO2 pollution. In addition, the high operating cost caused by low rate of air blowing, the short life of the refractory materials and high energy consumption during P-S converting become big problems. Other problems such as large amount of flue gas, low SO2 concentration, large fluctuation of flue gas volume and SO2 concentration, and discontinuous flue gas cause high cost of subsequent flue gas treatment are also needing to be solved. In order to solve these problems during the P-S converting, metallurgical engineer in various countries has spared a lot of efforts to develop continuous blowing process for decades. The iron-ore underground Kiirunavaara mine (Sweden) has been seismically active since 2008. In 2021 the production is on levels 1079 and 1108 m, at the deepest. The seismic activity has changed in character over time with one step change in 2015 when the number of large (ML>2) seismic events increased, and another one when the mine experienced a seismic event with Mw 4.2 in 2020. In 2017, the mine evaluated Hydraulic Fracturing (HF) as a possible mitigation technique for larger seismic events and a one-hole trial was performed. The trial proved promising, and it was decided to go forward with a large-scale trial covering an entire production area in the mine. The large-scale trial consists of 25 fracturing holes, 50 – 100 m long, running along 500 m out of the ~4500 m long orebody and spanning between production levels 1108 m and 1252 m. The fracturing process continued for a year, resulting in ~38,000 seismic events with −3.3<ML<1.4. The breakdown pressure varied between fractures in the same hole as well as between holes in the same area. Average breakdown pressure per hole was between 12 MPa and 50 MPa. The seismic response to HF in 2021 varied greatly from hole to hole and between fractures in the same hole. The variation in response could be related to the geological conditions and the infrastructure, such as large caving ore passes. In this paper some details about the experiments and broad preliminary analysis of the effect of the HF by using seismic source parameters of the induced seismic events are presented: 1) Distribution of seismic activity, 2) the ‘equivalent’ magnitudes for each hole calculated from the cumulative seismic energy and seismic potency released during the fracturing, compared with the local geological conditions; 3) the predominant failure mechanism of the seismic events caused by HF was defined. A difference in the behaviour between larger and smaller events was noticed, as ML>0 events seem to be compression type failures and ML<0 events seem to be related to slip on pre-existing structures. No seismic events related to creation of a new fracture have been identified yet.

IN this paper I propose to give a short and, I must confess, a rather incomplete description, as regards many details, of the process used in Chicago, Ill., for smelting the argentiferous ores of the far West, and shall confine myself in this description, principally, to the process used at the Chicago Silver Smelting and Refining Company&apos;s Works, known as the Balbach process, as all the other smelting works in that city follow the same method, with the exception of one, which has the Cordurié, process for the desilverization of argentiferous lead. In all, there are five silver smelting and refining works in and near the city of Chicago. The Chicago Silver Smelting and Refining Company&apos;s Works are situated at the little station of South Lynne, about seven miles south from Chicago. The plant at these works consists of one horizontal steam-engine, principally used for running the ore pulverizer, four reverberatory smelting-furnaces, connected by horizontal flues with a common chimney 85 feet high, three lead-softening furnaces, one so-called zinc or mixing furnace, one separating furnace or liquation hearth, one lead-refining furnace, three zinc distillation retorts, one English cupellation furnace, supplied with blast by a No. 3 Sturtevant blower, which is run by a small steam-engine having a vertical tubular boiler, and an assay office, in which there are two wind-furnaces of the ordinary construction, and also a small muffle furnace. The assay office is supplied with all the necessary apparatus and reagents for fire assaying. There are also a superintendent&apos;s office, various store-rooms for coke and charcoal, and for the preparation of fire-clay, etc. Recently a small slag hearth (Krummofen) with one tuyere, has been put up for the purpose of working over such slags as assay too high in silver and lead to be thrown away, of which there are large amounts. The principal ore worked while I was in the employ of the company was that of the well known Emma mine in Utah, and also small quantities of Colorado ore. Given the recent focus on powered haulage incidents within the U.S. mining sector, an appraisal of collision avoidance/warning systems (CXSs) through the lens of the research literature is timely. This paper aims to evaluate the maturity of CXS technology through the application of a technology readiness assessment (TRA) to research literature identified by systematic search methods. Results indicate that much of the evidence for CXS performance is at lower levels of maturity: that is, components and prototypes tested in a laboratory and in relevant environments. Less evidence exists for CXS performance at higher levels of maturity — that is, systems evaluated within operational environments — despite the existence of commercial products in the marketplace. This lack of evidence at higher maturity levels within the scientific literature highlights the need for more peer-reviewed research to evaluate CXS technologies. Additionally, results of the review reveal that most of the literature relevant to CXS technologies is focused on vehicle-to-vehicle interactions, which contrasts with haul truck fatal accident statistics that indicate most are due to vehicle-to-environment interactions, such as traveling through a berm. Lastly, the relatively small number and segmented nature of relevant studies suggest there is a need for more incremental research that would better facilitate the improvement of CXS technologies. This progression could be achieved through continued long-term interest and support for CXS technology research.

When an aqueous suspension of pyrite and a manganese ore reacts with oxygen, manganese is dissolved by the ferrous sulphate and sulphuric acid produced in situ by oxidation of pyrite. In the absence of added acid, the optimum conditions are: a molecularratio of Mn02/FeS2 of about 1&#183;0, a temperature of about 1400 C., and an oxygen pressure between 25 and 90 lb./sq. in. Under these conditions, complete extraction of manganese is obtained in six hours leaching. An addition of sulphuric acid enables an Mn02/FeS2 ratio of 2&#183;0 to be used successfully.Manganous sulphate decreases in solubility with increase in temperature above 1000 C., but even when the solubility limit is reached during leaching, reaction to form MnS04 still proceeds, and on cooling the MnS04 redissolves.INTRODUCTIONMany manganese deposits contain secondary manganese oxide minerals which are difficult to concentrate.
