Illustrations of how these results are utilized to design field applications of solid grade polymers to clarify mine drainage water are presented. The last crop of graduates from our colleges and universities who sought employment in the mineral industries found that they needed to hustle to find a job. There was no longer a list of waiting employers to choose from. Some of them became discouraged and drifted into other fields; many are still looking for employment. Word has gotten around that there are no jobs available in the mineral industries, and enrollment in the various colleges of mines and mineral industries has started to drop. Even established professional men are finding themselves suddenly out of work because of unstable metal prices and rising costs. All these people-students beginning to search for a career, young engineers not yet established-face the same problem: "What is the future of the mineral industries, and what type of training will best qualify the scientist or engineer for this changing field?" This question was posed to a number of leaders in different phases of the industry. Their comments are summarized as a guide to those considering a career in the finding, extraction, or beneficiation of mineral products.

It appears that in the earlier days of anthracite coal mining, 1824-25, the Lehigh region mined 76 per cent. of all the coal sent to market. During the same period Wyoming sent 12 and 5 per cent. respectively, whilst the Schuylkill sent 11 and 18 per cent., the number of tons marketed being in those days very small indeed. In the year 1828 the Schuylkill region mined over one-half of all the coal sent to market, and continued to do so for thirty years (with the exception of the year 1831), until 1858 ; since that date the production has declined very steadily in comparison with the other regions, until, in 1876, it was only 34 per cent. Wyoming, in the year 1820, was mining 40 per cent., but the production of all the regions was very small; in six years it declined to 5 per cent., increased to 34 per cent. in 1831, declined to 10 per cent. in 1838. Since which time the increase has been gradual, until 1873-75 Wyoming produced over 50 per cent. of all the anthracite coal sent to market. In 1867 the production exceeded that of Schuylkill, and has continued to do so since that time. In the year 1876, during the existence of the "coal combination," Wyoming lost 9 per cent.; during the same time Lehigh gained 7 and Schuylkill 2 per cent. over their relative production of the preceding year, the decrease of Wyoming being two and a half million tons, the increase of the Lehigh one million, the decrease of the Schuylkill nearly three-quarters of a million. The extraordinary production of the Lehigh region at a time of decreased demand and in opposition to an agreement with the other regions to limit the supply to the supposed demand mas the cause of the disagreement which ultimately broke up the combination of the great coal-producing and carrying companies. This paper presents the design and construction approach adopted for the widening and stabilisation of the existing decline tunnel forming part of the Scenic Railway Upgrade project at Katoomba in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales (NSW), Australia. The overall upgrade project included new trains and track, rebuilding of the top and bottom station and installation of a new winch and control system. All the works were undertaken over an eight-month period between August 2012 and April 2013 as part of a $30 M upgrade of the railway.The railway is the steepest cable-driven line in the world at a maximum of 52° extending over 350 m and descending from the escarpment into the Jamison Valley. The track was built in the 1880s for coal haulage and is recognised as a remarkable engineering achievement for its time. The tunnel section extends for about 120 m at the start of the decline and is about 3.5 m wide and 3.5 m high. The tunnel was excavated principally within medium to high strength Banks Wall sandstone and given that the widening only involved about 200 mm of trimming of the crown and sidewall this aspect of the work was not a critical support issue, except at the upslope portal. The tunnel crown however is entirely intersected by a major near vertical shear zone which presented significant challenges for the tunnel stabilisation works.Three-dimensional laser survey scanning was used for definition of the tunnel clearance envelope for the widening, and also to subdivide the tunnel into various geotechnical sections to assist in support design. Specifically oriented rock bolts extending beyond the shear zone into stable rock were used together with mesh, shotcrete and extensive strip drains and flushing points for drainage of the shear zone.Unique aspects of this project were included into the specifications and work methods. This included construction of a mobile working platform for tunnel works, the use of dry shotcrete application, difficult access for rock bolting and limiting vibration during the tunnel trimming works due to the risks associated with crown instability. The works also took into consideration particular safety constraints/work exclusion areas to address the risk of detachment of rock which could mobilise downslope to the track area below. This was required because other works were in progress such as micro-piling and bottom platform works which were being undertaken concurrently with the tunnel work.CITATION:Rosin, S G and Hughes, A, 2014. Internal-friction measurements were made during isothermal aging treatments of 18 pct Ni maraging-steel wires between 420° and 612°C. A sharp initial drop in the internal-friction level was interpreted in terms of a rapid dislocation recovery reaction. The rate of the recovery was found to be independent of temperature. Truncation of the recovery reaction was apparent in those systems that exhibited the rapid age-hardening characteristics of the maraging steels. It is proposed that this initial hardening response is the result of a low activation energy preprecipitation reaction involving molybdenum. A gradual rise in the internal-friction level at longer aging times was associated with the precipitation of a molybdenum-containing precipitate. CONSIDERABLE research effort has recently been devoted to the mechanisms responsible for the high strength and toughness of 18 pct Ni maraging steels. These bcc martensitic alloys are found to harden during aging at temperatures between 400° and 600°C. The aging response is very rapid with more than half the total hardness increase occurring within the first few minutes of aging, Fig. 1. Precipitate particles have been observed in the later stages of aging by a number of investigators.'-' While the identity of the precipitates remains the subject of some controversy, one or more of the intermetallic compounds, Ni3Mo, Ni3Ti, and Fe2Mo, are almost certainly involved. Heterogeneous nucleation of precipitates at dislocations has been noted8 and cobalt is believed to enhance the formation of fine, homogeneously distributed particles by lowering the solubility of the alloying elements in the martensitic matrix.3,7 Transmission electron microscopy studies of the initial hardening behavior have not been fruitful. Strengthening mechanisms based on atomic ordering have not been generally supported by X-ray and neutron-diffraction experiments.9 In the present investigation, the aging reaction was studied using isothermal-aging internal-friction measurements. The marked sensitivity of internal friction to short-range diffusion and precipitation processes has provided a convenient tool for the elucidation of the strengthening mechanisms operative in the maraging steels. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE An upright torsion pendulum was used to measure the internal friction of several maraging steels during isothermal aging. The pendulum was placed in an atmosphere of helium at a pressure slightly less than atmospheric. To permit measurement of internal friction during the first minutes of aging, the specimens were rapidly heated by passing a current through them in a manner similar to that described by Ang and Wert.10 Thermal gradients in the specimen were largely eliminated by using specially designed specimen grips11 which produced temperature variations of less than 1 pct over 90 pct of the specimen length and less than 3 pct over the entire length at aging temperatures up to 620°C. A proportioning strip-chart program controller was employed to maintain constant specimen temperature during treatments of up to 36 hr duration. A number of vacuum-melted laboratory heats having compositions near that of a typical commercial 18Ni-7Co-5Mo-0.4Ti alloy were investigated. "Plant owners and operators, plant designers and grinding mill manufacturers are giving much attention to the design and manufacture of autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding mills, particularly the mills that have large diameters and draw power up to 10,000 hp and greater. Reliable designs giving long operating lives are required in today 's ore processing plants.This paper reviews bench-scale and pilot-plant testing to determine first if the ore is suitable .to be ground by these methods and then reviews the data obtained from pilot-plant testing that is used to select the mills and the grinding circuit. The paper then discusses the use of the pilot-plant results to design the mills. The most important pilot-plant data used for mill design are power and the amount of ball charge to be used. The mill size selected is a combination of these factors. Pilot-plant data not only establish power requirements, but can be used in the selection of the type of drive, variable speed or fixed speed, and the operating procedure to be followed. This leads into the mill control circuit to be used. The total charge in the mill, the type of drive and mill discharge arrangements are needed in the calculation of stresses and bearing loads. Conclusions reached from pilot-plant work are used to obtain data for process design, and autogenous and semiautogenous mill design should be part of any test program incorporating either or both of these grinding methods."

The application of the stirred media mill in dry mode came to the front only in recent years, but at the same time several questions arise, such as aggregation, agglomeration, sticking on the liners and the grinding media. During high energy milling, not only the particle size reduces, but among others, in numerous cases the crystal structure and the amorphous state of the material also change due to the mechanical activation taking place. The present paper deals with experiments carried out on the ultrafine fly ash grinding in dry mode at various grinding conditions in a stirred media mill to investigate the mechanochemical effect and the energy efficiency of the mill. During the experiments the particle size distribution, particle shape, specific surface area, amorphity and crystal structure of the products were examined. The product related stress model was used for the evaluation of the effect of milling parameters on the mechanical activation. It was found, based on the experimental results, that there is mechanochemical effect on crystal structure of fly ash in the stirred media mill, as it was revealed by X-ray diffraction and FTIR measurements. The experimental results made it possible to determine the effect of the rotor circumferential speed and so the stress intensity on the mechanical activation of fly ash could be revealed.

Augered, Cast-In-Place (ACIP) piles can be an economical, reliable, versatile foundation system. They have also been a part of projects that were behind schedule and the subject of lawsuits. The ACIP pile is a specialty system that is more workmanship dependent than most deep foundation systems and is especially vulnerable to the problems and abuse of poor specifications and contract language. Many of the original specifications were based on grouting methods, and numerous misconceptions have followed the method. The Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) has been the leader in debunking the mystique that has hovered over the method and attempted to standardize the industry through publication of the manuals describing the method and how it should be inspected. DFI should be applauded for taking the lead and producing a reference document that can be used to educate the specification writers, designers, inspectors, and owners. It must be must appreciated that there have been other organizations that would not acknowledge ACIP piles as a legitimate member of the deep foundation family. Some consultants and designers have gone to the extreme of making it policy to not recommend the method for use. This presentation is one practitioner's view of the causes of problems as they can be traced back to the contractual conditions. It is intended to provide a broader and different perspective than those provided by the technical specialists. It does not necessarily reflect the position of the DFI or any of the organizations associated with the ACIP pile industry. It is intended to further the spirit of partnering on every ACIP pile project, to further the acceptance and promote the use of this unique system, for the benefit of all the parties. It should be recognized, however, that all of the participants can and do play a role in getting a project into trouble. My view is that projects that get into trouble usually have an early flaw that leads the project to the edge, and the project participants blindly follow the original mistake right over the cliff like lemmings. This instinctive reaction may be a survival tactic by going along with the group, because any one party that departs from the program or shows a position of weakness is a candidate for sacrifice.

El objetivo del presente estudio fue minimizar la concentración de teluro en la solución de agua madre, producto de la lixiviación de lodo anódico, mediante el proceso de cementación de teluro con cobre. En las pruebas desarrolladas en planta se alcanzó una extracción de 24% de Te, lo que hizo posible dar mayor valor agregado a los subproductos de la refinería.

Coal mine drainage, which occurs predominantly as acid mine drainage in the East, is a serious contaminant of surface and groundwater systems (Appalachian Regional Commission, 1969). Treatment of this pollutant can be very costly and is often difficult to achieve (Appalachian Regional Commission, 1969). A major source of coal mine drainage in surface waters is polluted ground- water discharge, therefore treatment of surface water does little to combat groundwater contamination. Prevention of the formation of coal mine drainage and restricting its entrance into the groundwater protects both surface and groundwater systems. The formation of acid mine drainage may be inhibited by preventing contact between toxic spoil, air, and water (Grim and Hill, 1974). This may be accomplished by surrounding toxic spoil with a relatively impermeable barrier, thus restricting groundwater and oxygen flow through the toxic zone. Toxic spoil packages constructed in this manner would minimize the entrance of acid mine drainage into the groundwater system, allowing dilution by uncontaminated water to occur. If successful, concentrations of coal mine drainage would be reduced below toxic levels.

In view of the fact that many domestic iron ore-dressing plant applying flotation cells in the re-verse flotation, to improve the technical level of magnetite reverse flotation, we apply such a technological process of one stage rougher and two stages scavenger flotation column respectively. The middling from the two stage scavenger process are returned to magnetic separation for condensing. By contrast, the technological process of one stage rougher and one stage cleaning flotation cells is made up of by multi-magnetic separation and magnetic middling regrinding separations. It has been proved that the flotation column we offer can simplify the technological process structure, obtain advanced technical indexes, run the system smoothly, reduce energy consumption, and be environ-mental friendly.

H. S. COE, St. Louis, MO. (written discussion *)-I feel much gratified that Mr. Mishler has confirmed those principles of slime settlement expressed by Mr. Clevenger and myself. I wish to state that, when we wrote the article referred to by. Mr. Mishler we had not seen his earlier article in which he gave a formula to be applied to the settling rate off feed pulp for determining thickener area required at El Tigre. It has been my experience that in cyanide work the settling area required is determined by the settling rate of the feed pulp for perhaps 20 per cent. of all of the ores to be encountered. For the other ores, the area required is greater than that indicated by the settling rate of the feed and corre-sponds to the settlement of a somewhat thicker free-settling pulp. Mr. Mishler, in his paper, has thoroughly outlined a set of tests for determining thickener capacity, which, if carefully carried out, should be entirely reliable, provided allowance is made for changes in the mill feed from time to time. Two features of his paper, I, believe; need comment. In speaking of the time required for slime to flocculate after being fed, Mr. Mishler quite properly states that the actual settling rate for the feed pulp can-not be that of completely flocculated pulp because of this time lost in flocculation. It seems to me, however, that this feature cannot be of very great importance, for the following reason: The upper zones of pulp in a thickener may be, and often are, as thin as the feed pulp. If, therefore, the feed be introduced at sufficient depth below the pulp surface to prevent agitation at the surface, there will be ample time for it to become flocculated before it becomes the surface layer, and it, will

The experimental phase behavior of several field gas-condensate systems, one field volatile oil system, and a series of synthetic systems having gas-oil ratios from 2,000 to 20,000 scf/bbl stock tank oil was measured. The data were used to calculate the depletion performance of the field systems at their respective reservoir temperatures and of the synthetic systems at various temperatures. The results of the performance calculations were used to prepare correlations of total stock tank oil and separator gas in-place, and the amount of each recovered by primary depletion. Data needed to use the correlations are initial gas-oil ratio, initial tank oil gravity, reservoir temperature and reservoir pressure. The correlations presented should be useful for estiinating recovery from reservoirs producing volatile oils or rich gas condensates having gas-oil ratios from about 2,000 to 30,000 scf/bbl of stock tank oil. INTRODUCTION Prediction of depletion performance for gas-condensate reservoirs usually requires extensive laboratory work or lengthy phase-behavior calculations. For many small gas-condensate bearing zones the expense of such work is often not justified. Furthermore, where large holdings are involved, it is useful to have estimates of future oil and gas production in advance of the results of a laboratory analysis, even if such work is ultimately planned. For these reasons, it would be of value to have a method for rapidly estimating the depletion performance of gas-condensate reservoirs from the type of field data usually available. Few data on the reservoir depletion performance are available for the purpose of developing correlations. The increasing number of gas-condensate discoveries and the advent of high-speed computers have stimulated the development of methods for predicting performance. Such calculated performance data have been shown to be reliable and are becoming accepted as a basis for reserve estimates and for engineering studies. It therefore seems satisfactory to use results of performance predictions themselves for the purpose of developing the desired correlations. Such an approach is described in this paper. Several rich natural gas-condensate systems (gas-oil ratios of from about 3,600 to 60,000 scf/bbl) and one natural volatile oil system were studied (2,363 scf/bbl). In addition, to provide a more systematic basis for correlating purposes, a series of related, synthetic reservoir fluid mixtures was also studied (GOR's from about 2,000 to 25,000 scf/bbl). The purpose of this paper is to show how the recovery of oil and gas by primary depletion may be estimated from surface gas-oil ratio, reservoir temperature and pressure, and tank oil gravity. procedure Experiments Companion samples of gas and oil were collected from the high pressure separators in nine different fields at the time of their discovery. Coal conversion to electricity or to substitute natural gas requires a significant quantity of natural and human resources including, in addition to the coal resource base, land, water and the construction and operating labor force. Each method of coal conversion has its advantages and disadvantages relative to conversion efficiency, preferred method of resultant energy transportation, resources consumed, and impact on the environment. Regulations which have been passed in recent years to maintain or restore the pre-project environment can add significantly to the capital and operating costs of both a conversion facility and its associated mine.

"Basal till sampling techniques were used to search for gold mineralization in the Timmins, Ontario area. During 1978 and 1979, approximately 90 overburden sampling drill holes were completed in Murphy and Hoyle Townships to test specific geophysically defined target areas. A conventional tricone dual tube drill system, and a unique retractable tricone/rock coring system were used to various advantages.First pass till sampling at 800 to 1200 ft intervals perpendicular to ice transport direction yielded anomalous gold values in till and carbonatized quartz pyrite-rich bedrock chips, and lateritic soil. Subsequent induced polarization-resistivity surveys defined the areal extent of a pyritic carbonate alteration zone. A second pass till sampling/limited rock coring program evaluated the gold mineralization potential of the alteration zone. Diamond drilling has substantiated the till and bedrock gold anomalies. Further evaluation of this mineralization is currently in progress. IntroductionThis paper describes an integrated geochemical/geophysical gold mineralization discovery case history in Hoyle Township. This discovery is on a property jointly owned (I983) by Canamax Resources Inc. and Du Pont of Canada Exploration Limited. Exploration of the property began in 1978 by Rosario Resources Canada Ltd. and in 1979 a joint venture agreement was signed with Du Pont of Canada Exploration Limited. Rosario Resources Canada Ltd. was taken over by Amax Minerals Exploration in 1981, which became Canamax Resources Inc. in 1982.The work described in this paper deals with a gold mineralization discovery located three-quarters of a mile northwest of the gold deposit currently being readied for underground exploration and development. Further drilling is required to investigate the economic potential of the gold mineralization herein described."

On the basis of well known and widely used in mine practice retreat longwall mining system, physical and mathematical models of air leakage dynamics have been created. Flow is assumed viscous-inertial and considering natural anisotropy of porous media of a gob area. As a result of modeling pressure and leakage distribution and velocity field can be defined. Thus the model presented in this paper can be used as aerodynamical prediction of gob area characteristics.

Underground limestone mines typically use the room-and-pillar method of mining in the generally flat-lying limestone formations. In some cases the dip may exceed 5° which can result in unique roof instability problems. Stability may be further exacerbated by the presence of horizontal tectonic stresses. Field studies and numerical model analyses are combined to assess the affect of the dip in various stress conditions. The results showed that where the horizontal tectonic stresses are sufficient to cause intact rock failure, increasing dip results in increased failure potential. The effect of the dip is greater when the maximum horizontal stress is parallel to the dip. Two case studies are presented and evaluated against the findings of stress analysis results. The study showed that the empirical rules of orienting headings parallel to the maximum stress are generally applicable to dipping excavations, except when mining in the up-dip direction. The importance of accurately determining the orientation of the maximum horizontal stress is emphasized because the window of favorable orientations relative to the stress is small.

Competition in the mining industry is the main driving force for both equipment manufacturers and end users to develop and apply the most cost efficient solution to a mining problem. Therefore the challenge to find new solutions is usually met by several suppliers under various factors of influence affecting specifications. Time and timing are particularly important, but all new developments ultimately have to successfully perform on site.Consideration of all aspects of planning, manufacturing, user liaison and ultimate satisfactory commissioning hinges on the necessities of assessing of all the expectations in the mining application and the requirements of the concept and layout team. To apply the maximum available technical competence with solid thorough workmanship is the best possible foundation for success of underground machinery development.
