In the past few years the Rietveld method emerged as a routine tool for quantitative phase analysis (QPA) from X-ray diffraction data. Fast and reliable results became possible by combining modern computer technology and optimised mathematical algorithms with the fundamental parameters approach in the Bruker AXS TOPAS software. Here the routine analysis of bauxite raw material and of aluminium bath electrolyte is presented. The accuracy of bauxite quantification was tested by analysing the IUCr round robin sample. An agreement of better than one per cent was obtained for minor constituents and a maximum deviation of 2.5 per cent for the major phases. This is excellent agreement with expected results from weighting. Ten different phases were quantified in natural samples from Turkey with a precision better 0.5 per cent for the major phases and one per cent for the minor phases. Additionally, crystallite sizes were obtained from the peak profiles that give valuable information for the processability of the material. XRD data from solidified aluminium electrolytes were rapidly measured using silicon strip detector technology. With the LynxEyeTM detector full patterns were collected in 90 seconds and analysed with TOPAS. It is shown how to derive well-established measures such as bath ratio and excess AlF3 from the Rietveld results. These measures are widely used in aluminium production and readily available with very high precision. The excellent agreement with ALCAN reference data demonstrates the outstanding accuracy of the method. The mean deviation between here presented results and reference data is below 0.5 per cent for total CaF2, below 0.25 per cent for excess AlF3 and 0.02 for the bath ratio. The precision of the method was evaluated by repeated measurements.

Secondary V-recycling slag, an industrial waste containing high gallium is being dumped continuously, which causes the loss of gallium. Thus, the alkali fusion process was employed to recover gallium from this slag. The effects factors on extraction of gallium such as roasting temperature, roasting time, alkali fusion agent concentration and CaO concentration were investigated in the paper. The experimental results indicated that excessive roasting temperature and roasting time is unfavorable to the recovery rate of gallium. The appropriate roasting temperature and duration are 1000 and 2 hours, respectively; The appropriate proportioning of Na2CO3: NaOH is 2:1 when the concentration of alkali fusion agent weighs 0.4 times the mass of the slag; In order to remove SiO2 from the leaching liquor, CaO should be used as an additive in the roasting process. The appropriate concentration of CaO should weigh 0.2 times the mass of the slag. Employing these optimal alkali fusion conditions in the roasting process, gallium recovery is above 90%

Merensky Reef is mined extensively within the Bushveld Complex. In previously mined-out areas on the Merensky Reef horizon there are pillars, potholes and remnants that have not been mined. These unmined blocks of ground on the Merensky Reef horizon can influence the mining of the underlying UG2 Reef. The extent of the influence will depend on the size of unmined ground and the middling between the two reef horizons. This paper quantifies the influence of partially extracted Merensky Reef on mining of the UG2 Reef, and aims to provide recommendations for mining strategies, as well as regional and local support to achieve efficient and safe extraction of the UG2 Reef, for various middlings beneath the Merensky Reef horizon. In some cases it was found that relatively shallow UG2 Reef mining could encounter conditions similar to those experienced in deep and ultra-deep mining environments.

Extensive mineralization in the basal part of the Duluth Complex of Middle Proterozoic (Keweenawan) age in northeast Minnesota has been explored during the past 30 years as a potential source of copper and nickel from sulfide-bearing assemblages. Very large resources of low grade and marginal material have been delineated by drilling and by test shafts sunk by at least five private mining companies, but none of the properties has yet been mined. With few exceptions, grade and tonnage figures for specific properties have not been released, but the magnitude of the resources has been estimated by the Minnesota Geological Survey and the Minnesota Dept. of Natural Resources as constituting several billion tons of low grade and marginal copper- and nickel-bearing material - a major combined copper-nickel resource of international importance.

In this study Pt-Al thin films were prepared via electron beam physical vapour deposition (EB-PVD) with an atomic concentration ratio of Pt25:Al75. These films were heat treated at temperatures ranging from 150°C to 650°C for annealing times from 4 to 60 minutes. The resulting microstructure of these thin films were obtained via secondary electron imaging used in conjunction with depth profiling with the aid of scanning auger microscopy (PHI 700).Elemental maps of the micrographs were obtained. Simulations, based on a chemical potential Monte Carlo method1, were run for various interaction parameters. From these simulations theoretical depth-profiles and proposed microstructures were obtained. These were compared to the experimentally measured depth profiles and elemental maps. IN the course of an investigation of the properties of metals at low temperature there was occasion to determine the constitution of four iridium-osmium alloys. There is very little information in the literature1 on the constitution of synthetic Ir-0s alloys. Zvyagintzev' s has made a comprehensive study of different natural Ir-0s alloys and concludes that alloys containing more than 32 pct 0s have the close-packed hexagonal structure of osmium, whereas those containing less than 32 pct 0s have the face-centered cubic structure of iridium. The alloys studied in this work were prepared by the American Platinum Works, Newark, N. J., and were received in the form of fragments approximately 1.5 mm average diameter. The fragments had been obtained by crushing ingots made by fusing charges of iridium and osmium under an arc and air cooling. The ingots were not given a homogenizing heat treatment. Several fragments of each metal and alloy were examined microscopically and by X-ray diffraction. For the X-ray method the fragments were crushed further to pass a 270-mesh screen, then sealed in evacuated fused-silica tubes, heated to 1100°C for 18 hr, and allowed to cool in the furnace. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns were obtained from the annealed fragments by means of a Norelco camera having a diameter of 114 mm, and unfiltered cobaIt radiation. For the microscopic examination several fragments in the as-received condition were mounted in Melmac, (American Cyanamid Co.) and ground using the conventional series of abrasive papers. The polishing was done with 0-2 diamond abrasive on a Microcloth (Buehler Ltd.) lap, wet with xylene. After polishing, the surface was etched electrolytically in a 10 pct solution of chromic acid or in a 10 pct solution of potassium cyanide. Both reagents attacked the osmium-rich constituent, whereas the iridium constituent was attacked slightly by the chromic acid reagent and not noticeably by the potassium cyanide reagent. The results of the X-ray diffraction and microscopic examinations are summarized in Table I. Fig. 1 shows the microstructure of a 21 pct Ir-79 pct 0s alloy. The results indicate an appreciable solid-solu-bility range of osmium in iridium as was reported by Zvyagintzev.' The solid-solubility range of iridium in osmium is more restricted, apparently less than 21 pct Ir. This implies a large range of composition in which two phases can coexist that was not reported by Zvyagintzev.

The success of the Australian mining industry depends on the quality of its skills. High quality skills supported by a culture which demands success lead to innovations, good practices and prosperity. Average skills lead inevitably to mediocrity. Universities play an essential role in the development and use of skills but the crucial industry-university links have been subordinated to conventional academic interests in training mining and processing engineers. It is only in the area of post-graduate research degrees which are oriented towards the mineral industry that Australia can claim world leadership. Deficiencies are not due to lack of training resources, they are due to inadequate utilisation of the resources that are available. Australia can and should have the world's best mineral engineering school, with a branch in Asia where many of its customers are and close ties with South America where some of its production operations will be. Some steps which might be taken to achieve this are proposed.

The Western Mining Resource Center (WMRC) at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) received a grant from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to perform a study that will help reduce the amount of respirable dust generated from the cutting of coal. The study is based upon laboratory testing and field experience. This information is being used to develop a new cutterhead design in conjunction with Joy Mining Machinery. The new cutterhead design is being evaluated with existing computer models developed at CSM. The new continuous miner cutterhead will be tested at the Twenty Mile Coal Company’s Foidal Creek Mine. Baseline testing with the current cutterhead will also be performed. This paper presents laboratory test results, design methodology, and test results performed to date.

?Longhole blast hole drilling? techniques are not new to the mining industry. Appropriate mechanization and improvement of the techniques and application has evolved from the industry requirements. Today safety and economics play a larger role in the excavation of ore passes, ventilation passes, and relatively small inclined excavations in the conventional gold and platinum industry. The application of dropraise drilling from the top or from the bottom is discussed investigating the current techniques available, DTH application, advantages and disadvantages, limiting factors, typical layouts and proposals, the drop raising technique and future applications. Similarly, the application of longhole blast hole drilling in tabular and massive orebodies is discussed with emphasis on the DTH application, advantages and disadvantages, limiting factors, typical layouts, the long hole stoping techniques and future applications.

Water use and wastewater management is becoming a focus for many industries around Australia and the rest of the world. Good quality water is increasingly being recognised as a precious resource, and regulations on the bulk storage and discharge of waste streams is becoming more stringent in order to protect the environment, existing water reserves and the communities that use these resources. Components such as heavy metals, arsenic, cyanide, and sulfate from acid mine drainage are some that occur at mining and metallurgical processing sites. Removal of such components can allow safe re-use of these streams, reducing the new water requirements of the process, or else allowing acceptable discharge to the environment. Re-use or discharge of treated water eliminates or reduces the risk associated with storage of large volumes of contaminated water on site.Technologies where a contaminant is selectively precipitated and removed as a sludge are used for many of these treatments. Selection of the best treatment option for wastewater must depend on what is suitable to each site, and consider not only the nature of the contaminant, but also other aspects, including the location and situation of the site, local regulations, cost of reagents, the sensitivity of the local environment and waste sludge disposal options. To outline how an effective and economical solution can be designed and delivered, this paper will present a case study for the removal of arsenic from a site wastewater, from assessment of the problem, selection of suitable technology, design and implementation, to the benefits delivered to the site.CITATION:Salokannel, A, Nevatalo, L M, Martikainen, M, van der Meer, T and McCulloch, J, 2013. The spillage of liquid diethyl ether in rooms at floor level and 3 feet above the floor resulted in flammable vapor-air mixtures in the immediate vicinity of the exposed liquido The liquid temperature was found to decrease by as much as 35° C., with a resultant decrease in vaporization rate. A search of the literature yielded numerous references to unstable peroxide (residue) formed by the autoxidation of ether. Such residues appear to constitute an explosion hazard in the condensed state.

The process for recovering lead from battery residues used in several Mexican Plants include lead blast furnace and rotary furnaces. The formers are basically fed with recycled batteries together with the necessary additives to produce metallic lead. One of the by-products generated in the blast furnace is a dust mainly formed by lead sulfide. The rotary furnace is used to recover lead .from lead batteries, dross from the refining-alloying process and the leady fines produced in the blast furnace. This paper describes thennodynamic analysis made to the rotary furnace process to understand the effect that each component of the system has upon the lead recovery. In order to enhance the process, the influence of iron chips composition and excess coke on slag viscosity is discussed. A computer optimization program . has been developed to design the furnace charge based on material and energy balances, .together with the thennodynamic equilibrium calculation.

The title of my talk today might lead you to two logical conclusions: The industry is faced with a problem that requires a solution and after discussing the problem I will offer a solution. The first conclusion is painfully accurate. One need only look at the accident statistics to be aware of the problem. During the eight-year period 1954 through 1962, the United States Bureau of Mines reports that falls of rock and coal accounted for 1,435 of the 2,516 fatal injuries that occurred in underground bituminous coal mines. Some improvement was made during 1962. For the first time since records have been kept, falls of rock and coal accounted for less than 50 per cent of the underground fatal injuries. The 105 deaths recorded in 1962 indicate that a great amount of work remains to be done in this area. As to the second conclusion, let me assure you at the outset that I have no panacean solution; however, I do propose to discuss some aspects of the problem and some possible methods of solution. What methods of solution are now, or have been employed in attempting to solve the problem? More specifically, what methods have you and your associates used? Has it been an orderly well thought out approach to the entire problem, or has it been a somewhat piecemeal approach which tackled the immediate problem and left the total problem for another day? Perhaps a new approach may be in order.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of Ascorbic (C6H8O6) Acid (AA), Activated Carbon (AC) and Guar Meal (C6H12O6) (GM) as a reductant for the simultaneous complete dissolution of zinc (Zn) and manganese (Mn) from a spent and mixed Zinc-Carbon (Zn-C) and alkaline battery powders in sulphuric acid (H2SO4) leaching. AA was tested previously as a reductant by other researchers while AC and GM were tested as a reductant for the first time in battery recycling. The effects of H2SO4 concentration, AA/AC/GM dosages, reaction temperature and leaching time on the Zn and Mn dissolutions were investigated according to 2k full factorial experimental design and Central Composite Design (CCD) technique; then, a simple optimization study was carried out for comparing the reductants. The optimum reductive acid leaching conditions for AA were determined at 3 hours leaching time, 70°C leaching temperature, 0.5M H2SO4 concentration, 13 g/L AA dosage, 1/20 g/mL solid/liquid (S/L) ratio and 200 rpm stirring speed. Under these conditions, the dissolution efficiencies were 99.9% for Zn and 99.3% for Mn. The best reductive acid leaching conditions for AC were determined at 3h leaching time, 80oC leaching temperature, 1M H2SO4 concentration, 3 g/L AC dosage and 400 rpm mixing speed. Under above conditions, Zn and Mn dissolutions were not complete. At 2M H2SO4 concentration, 10 g GM dosage, 700C leaching temperature, 200 rpm stirring speed, 1/20 g/mL solid/liquid (S/L) ratio and 3 hours leaching time, full dissolution of both Zn and Mn was achieved. As a result, three different reductants were evaluated in this study for complete simultaneous Zn and Mn dissolutions. This paper also compared present test results with previous spent battery recycling studies for Zn and Mn dissolutions. Full valuable metals dissolutions from spent batteries were achieved at low H2SO4 concentrations with AA and high concentrations with GM. Selective precipitations of Zn and Mn from acid solutions were carried out using NaOH and KOH. Using 3M NaOH as precipitating agent at room temperature and at pH 8; 95.4% of Zn and at pH 10; 93.7% of Mn were precipitated from the leach solution. Under the same conditions, using 3 M KOH at pH 8; 91.6% of Zn and at pH 10, 96.4% of Mn were precipitated. Based on the experimental results obtained, an appropriate flow sheet was proposed to recover both Zn and Mn.

The main characteristics and physical and mechanical properties of clays from the county of Campos dos Goytacazes, located at the northern part of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, are presented. The characterization included mineralogical composition, chemical composition and particle size distribution. The properties related to water absorption, linear shrinkage and flexural rupture strength were obtained in samples that were prepared by 20 MPa uniaxial pressing and fired at 950 and 1100oC. The results showed that the clays are predominantly kaolinitic with high percentage of clay minerals. The kaolinitic structure associated with a small amount of fluxes confers a refractory behavior which makes difficult the sinterization and impairs the ceramic consolidation.

"As study was undertaken to investigate the relationship between mill liner wear and grinding energy efficiency and to assess the opportunity to control mill speed to improve energy performance as mill liner wears. The study involved analysis of plant operating data and liner wear profiles over time. The operating work index was found to be an effective tool to identify the decrease of grinding efficiency along the liner service. The plant data show that the mill grinding efficiency as determined by monitoring the operating work index, and throughput decreases as liner wears. However, efficiency and throughput can be maintained by either changing the liner more frequently or by increasing the mill speed. Two scenarios for increasing mill throughput were analyzed. The first one involves changing the liner before the efficiency drops and the second one requires increasing the mill speed from 75% to 79%. Both scenarios show financial benefits that can be used in mill operations.INTRODUCTION The analysis of the mill power draw is used in this study as a key parameter for comparing mill liner profile and its effect on mill performance. Current technology and simulation software used in the mining industry do not factor in the impact of liner wear profiles in grinding efficiency and mill throughput (Toor, 2013). To address this gap, this study provides an analysis of key factors affecting mill throughput and grinding efficiency: mill speed, ball loading, and liner profiles. Several years of plant mill operating data, published research papers, and MillTraj® simulation results are used to demonstrate that face angles impact grinding efficiency and throughput and that mill speed can be used to overcome this problem. Moreover, the liner profile wear analyses clarify a mismatch between actual and estimated power draw calculations."

"Crack in corrosion (CIC) linepipe defects are hybrid defects not directly addressed by existing assessment methods. To investigate the collapse pressure of these defects, CIC defects were formed in 508 mm (20 in) diameter, 5.7 mm thick API X52 linepipe. These defects were 200mm long and varied in depth from 3.0 to 3.8 mm. The respective failure pressures decreased from 14.3 MPa for the plain pipe to 7.9 and 6.2 MPa respectively. A standard FAD method was applied to evaluate these defects as equivalent length and depth cracks, predicting the rupture pressure conservatively by 18% on average. However, when assessed as equivalent cracks with a reduced wall thickness corresponding to the corrosion depth, the predicted collapse pressures were more accurate, approximately 14% conservative on average.INTRODUCTIONPipelines are a safe and efficient method for transporting high volumes of oil and gas. However, aging pipelines may experience defects, such as cracks or corrosion. Present approaches include detection, assessment and repair of defects before they may become critical to the integrity of the line. There are different codes and standards for assessing pipeline defects, depending on the type of defect, with API 579 (API, 2000) being the most common code for the assessment of cracks in oil and gas pipelines . Corrosion is commonly assessed using RSTRENG (Kiefner & Vieth, 1989). Other methods such as the Finite Element method and the CPS method (Cronin & Pick, 2002) may be used for crack and corrosion, respectively.At present, there is no specific method or procedure for assessing crack in corrosion (CIC) defects, and as a consequence there is a need to provide an assessment and evaluation of the integrity of these defects in order to determine the requirements for defect repair or hydro line testing. Hence, the goal of this study was to provide guidance for the assessment of CIC defects for linepipe.CRACK IN CORROSION DEFECTS (CIC)Significant amounts of corrosion and cracking are not generally found together (Hosseini, 2010). However, a new hybrid defect including cracking within corrosion (CIC) has been identified in operating pipelines. In this case, cracking coincident with corrosion (schematic shown in Figure 1) provides the motivation for the current study."

Abstract -Giant, sediment-hosted lead-zinc deposits in northern Australia formed during development of Mid-Proterozoic extensional basins that overlie Lower Proterozoic basement. The basement in the Mount Isa area, exposed by folding and faulting, contains fractionated, high-heat-producing granites. These granites generate heat at a rate of about 6 ?Wm-3, probably sufficient to form giant lead-zinc deposits either by (a) driving episodic convection of saline basement and basin fluids for periods of 105 to 106 years at temperatures of about 230°C, or (b) heating basin fluids moving under the influence of topographic relief or fault movement. The presence or absence of such granites may form a vital component of the genetic model. Ore-forming fluid flow was probably initiated by continent-scale, extensional basin fracturing.

FOR several years, the rock-burst question has been given serious consideration by the operating staff at Wright-Hargreaves mine and, as a result of observations and experiences, several different methods of mining have been developed which are now in use in various parts of the mine. These are described in the following pages. It should be emphasized, how-ever, that these methods, and the views expressed in this paper, are based solely on conditions at Wright-Hargreaves mine. Such conditions may or may not be similar to those obtaining in other mines in the Kirkland Lake area, where ore occurrences, veins, wall-rock, faulting, intrusives, etc., may be entirely different. Size and shape of ore-bodies, composition of the ore-bodies and their surrounding rocks, locations of intrusives and sedimentary rocks, and direction, dip, and strength of faults, all introduce problems that are peculiar to each individual mine. Ground failure' in coal and metal mines is not at all unusual. A variety of systems of mining have been developed to delay movement of large or small blocks of ground, or, in some instances, to take advantage of the fact that ground movement, due to mining operations, is unavoidable. Ground failure may be either slow collapse or it may take place with explosive violence. It is principally with the latter condition that we are concerned in the mines of the Kirkland Lake district.
