The leaching behavior of palladium powder in aqueous solutions containing NaCI or N'H4Cl was investigated. Cupric ion was used as an oxidant for the dissolution reaction. The effect of a number of leaching parameters such as temperature, concentration, stirring speed and surface area on the leaching rate was studied. The leaching system containing chloride and cupric ion was found to be very effective for the dissolution of metallic palladium. Based on the experimental results the overall leaching rate was believed to be controlled by a chemical reaction step. The dissolution rate of palladium was found to be first order with respect to the concentration of cupric ion and second order with respect to the concentration of chloride.

In 1995 Peru was the 12th largest producer of gold in the world: 56,499 kg, or 18 million ounces. Much of this production comes from Yanacocha, operated by Newmont Mining Co, and owned jointly by Newmont; Buenaventura Mines, a Peruvian-listed company; and the International Finance Corp.

IN 1948, as part of a program to expand the copper tube mill facilities of the American Brass Co. plant at Kenosha, Wisconsin, plans were formulated to convert the 100 ton capacity anode casting furnace at the Great Falls, Montana plant of the Anaconda Co. to the production of 3 in. phosphor -ized billets. The furnace was rebuilt completely and construction was started on an addition to the building. Members of the Great Falls staff visited various billet casting plants to draw upon the experience of other producers of this type of casting. Many features of other plants were incorporated into the Great Falls plant but, in addition, many new designs were made and perfected to make the plant the most advanced of its type. Construction was begun in 1949, with the intention of having the plant in production in the early part of 1951. In January 1951, as the plant was being rushed to completion, the government placed restrictions on the production of copper tubing. As a result, work was halted and the plant lay idle for two years. Interest was reactivated in May 1953 with the lifting of restrictions on copper. Plans were laid to go into production in July and the first charge was taken out July 1, 1953. Basically the plant is designed to produce from cathode copper a 3 in. diam billet, 50 in. long. weighing 110 lb, and containing 0.013 to 0.036 pct P, at a rate of 150,000 Ib per operating day. These billets are to be pierced and drawn into tubing. Furnace The furnace is a 100 ton capacity reverberatory type, gas fired furnace; 21 ft long and 9 ft wide. Gas is introduced to the furnace through two 38 hole Mettler gas burners. These burners are of chrome nickel alloy with four jets per hole. The furnace is charged with cathodes from the Electrolytic Copper Refinery plus return scrap from the casting operation by means of a Wellman Seaver Morgan Co. 7,000 lb capacity charging machine. The charge crane has a 20 ft boom and fork peel provided with an air ram to push material off the peel. The machine travels on overhead tracks and can be moved in any direction. The boom can be raised and lowered and swung through an arc of 180". With well stacked units of 6,000 lb, an experienced operator can put the first charge into the furnace in 40 min. After charging, the steel framed silica brick charge door is put in place and sealed with clay. After melting and skimming off the slag, the copper is blown until an oxygen content of 0.40 pct is reached. The metal is then heated to 2180°F, covered with coke, and poled. Poling is continued until a 3 in. diam test billet, 8 in. long, shows a flat set. The oxygen content is usually 0.030 pct at this time. At the end of poling, a temperature of 2160" to 2180°F is desired. In the side of the furnace opposite the charging door is the taphole slot, extending 36 in. upward from the bottom of the furnace. It is 4½ in. wide at the outside face and widens to 9 in. at the inside face of the furnace. It is filled with a wet mixture of sand, fireclay, and crushed coal. Flow of metal

Sodium chloride crystals are brittle in the presence of surface microcracks. Water immersion leads to an enhancement of ductility which is retained indefinitely in dry air providing the crystal is dried without leaving a surface precipitate. Storage in a damp atmosphere results in a surface reaction and consequent rembrittlement. Although elimination of surface flaws in ionic solids does not necessarily enhance ductility, there is always a change in the location of the fracture origin. Researchers examined datasets from two separate studies that measured common demographic variables but different safety performance outcome variables. Of specific interest was how types of experience might relate to workers’ preparedness to effectively mitigate or respond to both routine and nonroutine risk in the mining industry. The results suggest that individual factors such as length of job, industry, and mine experience are predictive of routine safety performance — as measured by self-reported proactive and compliant safety behaviors — and/or nonroutine safety performance — as measured by perceived competence in self-escape knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) — in significant and sometimes unexpected ways.

The U.S. Department of Energy investigated the use of liquid-emulsion membranes (LEM) for the selective removal and recovery of metals such as copper and zinc from mine waste waters. This investigation included field tests of a mobile, pilot plant-scale, continuous-flow LEM system. The system was tested at copper mines with solutions containing from 100 to 1,400 ppm Cu, and at a zinc mine with a solution containing 115 ppm Zn. Typical results from the copper tests were >90% copper recovery, and zinc extraction from waste water also was typically>90%. Although all of these waste waters contained high impurity levels, pure products were produced. On several of these field tests, integrated systems were tested that resulted in recovery of metal by-products, selectiv~ precipitation of iron, and polishing to reach discharge targets for essentially all of the contained metals. In addition, some results are included from laboratory-scale tests.

Data about shipments in this county are more plentiful than in most others. Canal records, although not complete, are available for 1837-1840, 1856-1857, 1859 and 1864. The census figures, and those of the reports of the Secretary of Internal Affairs, are very evidently too .low. Local consumption within the county has always been large, mainly due to the Cambria Iron Company, and other manufacturing plants, in Johnstown; here a large coke supply was made from coal directly from the mines, neither coal or coke being handled by any outside transportation agency. "The most important characteristic of open-pored metals is porosity, since it enables all of their functional applications as filters or sound absorbers. Due to the notch effect of the pores, mechanical properties of porous metals are better than the ones of comparable structures made of polymers or ceramics. Consequently, only open-pored metals can be used in aircrafts to reduce flow noise or noise resulting from the core engine by acoustic absorption. Absorption properties depend highly on pore size and porosity of the material, which must be characterized as precisely as possible in order to analyze the correlation between morphology and noise reduction performance. Here, a line segmenting method is explained in order to characterize pore size and porosity of absorber materials using image processing based on two dimensional microscopy images, including sample preparation and specification of the set-up. Then, the influence of the pore structure on the measured absorption behavior is discussed. Finally, the correlation of acoustic behavior, pore morphology, and porosity is outlined.IntroductionSignificant noise loads affect everyone causing anxiety, depression, insomnia and other effects which impair health and productivity [1],[2]. Due to the rising number of flights and aircrafts, air traffic noise increases dramatically. To counter this development, various approaches have been developed to reduce the different noise sources resulting from airframe, jet or engine [3],[4],[5],[6]. One approach to reduce this noise is the application of noise reducing liners in the hot gas path [7]. This is especially important, since the engine is becoming the dominant noise source of modern airplanes during take-off [8]. Due to the elevated temperatures and high fatigue loading in this part of the aero-engine, conventional passive absorber materials cannot be used. Polymers would not be able to bear the heat and ceramic fibers would crack under the mechanical loading due to the notch effect. Consequently, this study focuses on metals with open pores, which can resist elevated temperatures and fatigue loading and additionally resemble geometrically conventional passive absorbers. Based on the production processes, e.g. sintering of metal fibers [7], powder processing using a foaming agent [9], coating of polymer foams [10], or using melt infiltration techniques [11], the characteristic dimension of the porosity is usually in the range of 0.01-10mm. In this work, sintered metals and metal sponges are analyzed after the theory of sound absorption is briefly outlined. Then, measurements of the acoustic absorption of metal sponges and sintered metals in an impedance tube are performed. To understand and predict the acoustic properties of metals with open porosity, it is necessary to characterize the materials as precisely as possible. This is explained in detail using a line segmenting technique, followed by a discussion of the connection of pore characteristics and acoustic absorption. Finally, a conclusion is given."

The financing of large mining projects in developing countries is often achieved, at least in part, by limited-recourse financing methods. Financing agreements are affected by the basic accord that is struck between the host government and the sponsors of the project. It is concluded that governments and project sponsors should take into account the requirements of lenders when structuring such mineral development agreements to maximise the potential for attracting project financing. Lenders are likely to be most interested in aspects such as fiscal arrangements, calculation of taxable income and general accounting rules, royalties, transferability of payments/dividends overseas, corporate structure and control, staged development, financing, loan support and state guarantees/approvals, political risk, provisions for default, product marketing, settlement of disputes and environmental issues

"A commercially available through-the-earth (TTE) communications system was evaluated at an underground coal mine in eastern Kentucky. This field study was conducted as part of a larger multisite evaluation of available TTE systems. The mine detailed in this paper was idled at the time of the study, which provided the nearest practical representation of a postevent mine shutdown environment. For this study, surface-to-underground and undergroundto- surface communications were tested. Standard deployments of the TTE system using the manufacturer’s recommended procedures were able to achieve clear communications between underground and surface locations. Other arrangements of the units yielded mixed results. Future experimentation is planned to further examine the phenomena observed at this mine IntroductionThe ability to establish effective communication between surface and underground personnel after a mine event is essential for both evacuation and rescue efforts. Current wireless underground communication technologies are reliant on intermediary physical infrastructure, such as antennas and repeaters, to enable underground communications. As such, communications are easily disabled during a mine event because of the inherent vulnerabilities to physical damage (Damiano, 2012; National Academy of Engineers, 1970; Yenchek et al., 2011). A true emergency communications system would function regardless of a mine’s physical state. Through-the-earth (TTE) wireless communication technology only requires the use of a single transmitter and a single receiver to achieve point-to-point communication through solid strata. With this capability, TTE systems have the potential to serve as a true emergency communications platform."

This paper describes an integrated computer facility supporting the functions and responsibilities of shift operations, scheduling, maintenance and management using real-time interactive techniques. The functions and responsibilities as related to coal export terminals are specifically addressed, although these functions would be equally applicable to other terminal configurations and other commodities. "Pellet quality has taken on a new dimension during the last ten years. Quality in the seventies was generally defined as adherence to certain physical and chemical specifications. Today, the talk is in terms of how the business is managed, how customer's expectations can be exceeded, not only in product quality, but in service responsiveness.Coke breeze and flux additions, lower silica levels, and improved furnace control practices have all contributed to the improvement of pellet physical and metallurgical properties. Statistical process control has provided additional insight into the parameters that affect pellet quality.Increased customer contact and product quality surveys have heightened our awareness of customer needs and also provide direction for quality improvement test work. Current work is focussed on improving reducibility and understanding the relationship between tumble, fired compression and metallurgical properties.This paper will review the Iron Ore Company of Canada's efforts during the past decade and describe some of its initiatives for the future.IntroductionThe Carol Pellet PlantThe Iron Ore Company of Canada's Carol Project is located in Labrador City in the southwestern portion of Newfoundland and Labrador , approximately 965 Ian northeast of Montreal. The project consists of mining facilities, beneficiation complex and a pellet plant, which began operations in 1962. The pellet plant consists of six Dravo-Lurgi straight grate machines, regrinding, filtering and balling facilities. The current capacity of the Carol pellet plant is approximately 10.5 million tonnes , while the concentrator has the capacity to produce about 18 million tonnes of concentrate.The orebody consists of specular hematite, magnetite and small quantities of limonite and goethite. The average grade of the orebody is approximately 39% iron."

The Bureau of Mines evaluated all previously approved gas masks to determine their ability to provide respiratory protection against each of the following six selected amines: ethylenediamine, diethylamine, n-butylamine, ethylamine, methylamine, and hydrazine. Minimum requirements were a 24-minute service life at a flow rate of 64 liters per minute (32 liters per minute for hydrazine) and an amine concentration of 1.0 volume-percent (0.5 volume-percent for hydrazine). The three masks meeting these requirements were the LG4, Willson Products Division, The Electric Storage Battery Co.; the GMD-SS, Mine Safety Appliances Co.; and the 084-PHOV-R, Acme Protection Equipment Co.

Manitoba has now joined Ontario and Quebec in providing for new incentives and lower tax rates for the mining industry. A single rate of tax (to replace the former two-tier royalty), an investment tax credit and a relatively straightforward set of rules for calculating taxable mining profits are the main features of new mining tax legislation announced by Manitoba's Finance Minister Donald W. Craik in his May 15, 1979 budget address. On introducing amendments to reform The Metallic Minerals Royalty Act, the Finance Minister indicated that the new tax regime is intended to restore the Manitoba mining tax system to a competitive position in Canada, and should result in renewed investment in the province's mining industry. 1n this regard, the government could be right-there is little question that the new tax regime will produce greater incentives for the mining industry than the two-tier royalty system introduced by the New Democratic government in 1975. The proposed changes, contained in Bill 57, would largely be effective January I. 1979.

A review of thermodynamic information and models of slags, including associated software when available, is presented. The pertinence and accuracy of these models is discussed by comparison of their predictions for various slag thermodynamic properties with the available experimental data. Practical industrial applications will be illustrated by a literature review of the dephosphorization process of ferromanganese alloys and by the description of Ti behavior during silico-manganese alloys production. This latter example will show how the thermodynamic models have been used to propose a flotation treatment at low temperature to enhance TiC removal.

The crystal chemistry of carbonate in Ca apatites, including Na-free and Na-bearing hydroxylapatite (CHAP) and Na-bearing fluorapatite (CFAP) and chlorapatite (CCLAP), has been investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray structure, using crystals synthesised from carbonate-rich melts at 1 GPa, 1400 - 1000¦C. The carbonate ion substitutes for both the X (OH, F, Cl) anion species in the apatite channel (type A carbonate) and the phosphate group (type B carbonate). The type A carbonate ion is oriented in the channel with two oxygen atoms close to the c-axis, and the type B carbonate ion is located close to the sloping faces of the substituted phosphate tetrahedron, with details varying with composition series. Sodium promotes the uptake of type B carbonate and also has a profound effect on FTIR spectra. Crystal compositions correspond approximately to the substitution formula Ca10-(y+z)Nay z[(PO4)6-(y+2z)(CO3)y+2z][X2-2x(CO3)x], with x + y up to 1.0 and z + 0.0 for CHAP, x + y + 4z + 0.4 for CCLAP, and x + y + 2z + 0.1 for CFAP, for equivalent conditions of synthesis. The sodium cation and A and B carbonate ion defects are locally coupled in all three composition series to facilitate charge compensation and minimise the effects of spatial accommodation. Synthetic Na-bearing type A-B CHAP with x + y + 0.5 has a similar chemical composition and FTIR spectrum to biological apatite.

The problem of heat stress underground in the gold mines is approached on the basis of the heat transfer between the human body and the underground environment. Experimental measurements of radiant and convective heat transfer and a theoretical calculation of maximum evaporative heat transfer enable the maximum cooling power of an environment to be calculated in terms of the dry-bulb and wet-bulb temperature, the mean radiant temperature, the wind speed and the barometric pressure. For most underground applications the cooling power can be expressed as a function of wet-bulb temperature and wind speed only. The relative importance of wind speed and wet-bulb temperature can be assessed: in working places where wind speed is low additional cooling of workmen can be achieved better by increased wind speed than by decreased wet-bulb temperature. The wet kata reading proves to be of limited value as an index of heat stress because environments with equal wet kata do not necessarily have the same cooling power. Finally, thermal equilibrium with the environment is possible when cooling power equals or exceeds the rate of metabolic heat generation. The rates of metabolic heat generation for various underground tasks are indicated.

O processo de estampagem a quente também conhecido como press hardening, é um dos métodos mais utilizados atualmente pela indústria automobilística para produzir aços de alta e ultra alta resistência. Esse processo é principalmente usado em peças relacionadas à segurança passiva e à resistência ao impacto, tais como pára-choques e barras de proteção laterais. O uso desse processo aumenta a segurança dos passageiros e reduz o peço do veículo e, portanto, o consumo de combustível. No presente estudo, amostras de aço ao boro foram deformadas a quente, não isotermicamente, a 850ºC e 750ºC em 30% a uma taxa de 0,5s-1. As microestruturas obtidas após deformação a 850ºC foram quase totalmente martensíticas, diferente das amostras deformadas a 750ºC, onde houve uma diminuição da fração volumétrica de martensita e um aumento da fração volumétrica de ferrita. Portanto, a deformação aplicada a 750ºC resultou em uma diminuição dos valores de microdureza. Desta forma, tornou-se possível investigar a influência da deformação em alta temperatura na transformação martensítica, na fração volumétrica de ferrita e nos resultados de microdureza.
