The cracking of silicon particles embedded in an aluminum matrix occurs progressively over the range of plastic deformation of the composite specimen. The fracture probability of the particles increases with increasing particle size and decreasing silicon contents. The crack orientation tends to be perpendiculay to the direction of the maximum tellsile strain. An example of a direct association between matrix slip and particle cracking is shorn. ALUMINUM-SILICON alloys of commercial compositions fail by ductile fracture in three stages:' I) initiation of cracks in the silicon particles, 2) growth of cracks into cavities, and 3) rupture of the aluminum matrix separating the cavities. The present work is concerned with the first stage: the initiation of cracks in the silicon particles. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Aluminum samples with 2.8, 6.1, 9.6, and 13.2 vol pet Si, respectively, were cast from commercial al- loys. Machined tensile specimens (2 in. gage length) were annealed in air at 1000°F for 100 hr, and then pulled at a strain rate of 0.025 per min. The grain size (average linear intercept) of the aluminum matrix was 0.24 and 1.6 mm in the 6.1 and 13.2 pet Si alloys, respectively. The particle size of silicon in alloys of one composition (6.1 pet Si) was varied by either modifying the castings with 0.15 pet Na or prolonging the annealing time. The average particle size was measured by linear and planar analysis, assuming spherical particles of uniform size. The particle sizes and compositions of all samples are tabulated in Fig. 8, together with the identifying symbols used in the graphs. The respective numbers of broken and unbroken silicon particles were determined from metallographically prepared longitudinal sections by counting a total of approximately 2000 particles per sample. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS 1) Crack Initiation During Deformation as Function of Composition. Nominal stress-strain curves of four specimens of different compositions, but approximately equal particle sizes, are presented in Fig. 1. (communication to the Secretary*) :—The authors have shown that, under certain conditions, the rate of dissolution of gold by chlorine and bromine is reduced by the addition of 10 per cent. of silver to the gold, and that the action is almost stopped when the silver amounts to 30 or 40 per cent. of the alloy. Even if full recognition is given to the practical way in which the work was done, however, it is to be regretted that Prof. Hofman and Mr. Magnusou did not determine the temperature at which the experiments were carried out. From the details given, it may be inferred that the temperature was raised by chemical action by about 20' C. when 21 g. of sulphuric acid was added, and that the mixture was then slowly cooled down during the experiment. When bromine or very weak chlorine solutions were used, there could not have been any perceptible heating-action. As the action of both chlorine and bromine is aided by heat, it follows that the stronger solutions of chlorine were given an unfair advantage over the weaker solutions, and over bromine. If the temperature had been the same in each case, I do not think that the conclusions deduced by Prof. Hofman and Mr. Magnuson' would have been found to be justified. (This is speaking generally. In barrel-treatment the conditions are similar to those in the experiments.) The superior speed of bromine as compared with chlorine at equivalent strengths is not yet disproved, and the differences noted between strong and weak solutions of chlorine may have been largely a function of the temperature. THE scope of this paper will be limited to finished materials that contain a large preponderance (around 80 per cent or more) of magnesium oxide. The large and commercially important production of refractory dolomite and modified dolomites is not discussed here, and the production of magnesium basic carbonate for use as a heat insulator is barely mentioned. The discussion is confined mainly to magnesias produced in comparatively great quantity by direct processing of naturally occurring raw materials and hence excludes secondary or highly purified products such as pharmaceutical products or U.S.P. light and heavy calcined magnesias of commerce. NOMENCLATURE The nomenclature of the magnesia products that will be discussed is somewhat confusing, in that it is customary in the trade to designate as "calcined magnesite" the materials that result from the calcining of magnesite to temperatures that remove the contained carbon dioxide. The finished product, therefore, is not magnesite at all but simply a more or less pure magnesium oxide or magnesia. Furthermore, partly for statistical and partly for commercial reasons, it has been customary, during recent years, to classify as "calcined magnesite" products that result from the heat-treatment of magnesium hydroxide precipitated from magnesium-containing brines; products that, obviously, have no relationship whatever to magnesite. In the listing of magnesia-containing materials, tonnages of which are regularly reported by the Bureau of Mines, reports ordinarily are made under two headings: "caustic calcined" magnesite, in which all of the varieties of products treated at relatively low temperatures are lumped; and "dead-burned" magnesite, in which are included both high-purity and low-purity, and particularly both high-iron and low-iron, materials that have been so heat-treated that the magnesium oxide occurs predominantly as crystalline periclase-materials used almost entirely for refractory purposes. In 1940 the apparent domestic consumption of "caustic calcined" magnesite was approximately 17,000 tons, about 95 per cent of which was produced in this country. The apparent consumption of "dead-burned" magnesite was approximately 172,000 tons, some 82 per cent of which was domestically produced. In both total quantity and percentage of material produced within the United States, these figures are record highs for many years past. UTILIZATION As indicated by these figures, the major tonnage outlet for magnesia is the refractories industry, in which magnesia is employed principally in three ways: (I) as dead-burned grain magnesite for the construction and maintenance of the hearths or bottoms of basic open-hearth furnaces; (2) in the form of refractory magnesite bricks and shapes; and (3) as a chemical

According to recent estimates, nearly 30 percent of the material from underground coal mining in the United States is rejected on the surface as waste. This accumulation of almost three billion tons of coarse and fine coal refuse is primarily from coal cleaning operations. The marketable coal is intermixed with sandstone, clays, shales, and carbonaceous rocks, which must be removed and disposed of in an acceptable manner. The disposal of mineral wastes is a major environmental concern. The most common types of environmental problems associated with coal refuse disposal are acid formation, erosion, and sediment control. Other areas of concern include air and water quality, combustion control, mine sealing, and reclamation. This paper focuses on these topics and attempts to outline special environmental features which can be incorporated into the design and construction of a coal refuse facility. Often these measures can minimize and possibly eliminate the potential environ- mental hazards. It is imperative, however, that these measures be adopted prior to and during construction, because of the relative ease and cost savings compared to post-construction implementation.

The development of machine learning (ML) algorithms has led to promising advances in lithology classification from geophysical logs, which is indispensable in various underground engineering applications. Due to the resolution and availability of logging data, ML models can recognise lithology change in a definitive form at a fine scale (0.01 m). While the results from previous models indicated promising performance in the classification, the robust capability of generalising lithology prediction to unseen data may not be true for those models due to: (1) data bias caused by borehole selections, and (2) logging data mismatches among boreholes. To this end, this paper aims to investigate the generalisability of ML models and seek potential improvements. Four ML models were selected to be trained on single reference boreholes to test the other (as unseen) in the same region, which includes Support Vector Classifier (SVC), Random Forest (RF), eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and Residual Neural Network (ResNet10). The data set involves 11 boreholes from a coalmine in north-western Bowen Basin (Queensland, Australia): density, gamma ray, neutron, and sonic logs are selected as inputs. Additionally, a data adaptation method is applied for better generalisability. The results show that there is an accuracy trade-off between the same borehole and unseen boreholes across the models. It also indicates a 16–43 per cent reduction in model performance when generalising the predictions (in marco-F1 score), while the adapted data sets can contribute to a around 12 per cent improvement. This study provides a fundamental understanding of the model generalisability when using a single borehole, essential for further correlating boreholes for regional lithology classification; the adaptation method can improve the generalised accuracy, and reduces the labour to label lithology, which facilitates the identification of gas storage mechanisms, geological/geophysical modelling, and stratigraphic analysis.

"The Mount Milligan Mine, owned by Thompson Creek Metals Company Inc. (TCM), started operations in September of 2013. It is located between the communities of Fort St. James and Mackenzie and is the first major metal mine to open in British Columbia in 15 years. Based on reserves as of January 1, 2014, it has an estimated 22 year mine life with 2.1 billion pounds of copper and 6 million ounces of gold in reserves. Like all commissioning operations, there have been issues achieving design throughput and recovery due to flow sheet design, equipment failures, control philosophy, and reagent scheme. Efforts to improve overall mill performance include equipment modifications, reagent screening and testing, and grind size testing. Applying these changes to the mill and working closely with the mine has resulted in continuous improvement each month as Mount Milligan looks to achieve the nominal design capacity of 60,000 dry metric tonnes per day in the later part of 2015. Considerable focus is being placed into ensuring size reduction equipment is utilized effectively. Additional modifications and tests are being undertaken to steadily improve processes and alleviate restrictions in the mill. This paper will discuss the start-up and present ramp-up history of Mount Milligan, the current mill processes, and the steps taken to achieve expected production numbers.OPERATION BACKGROUNDMount Milligan is an open-pit copper and gold operation wholly owned and operated by Thompson Creek Metals. It is located approximately 155km northwest of Prince George, British Columbia, between the communities of Mackenzie and Fort St. James. The copper-gold porphyry deposit contains a Measured and Indicated Mineral Resource of 706.7 Mt at 0.18% Cu and 0.33 g/t Au, containing 2.84 billion lb. copper and 7.50 million oz. gold. Mine life is currently estimated at 22.1 years (“Feasibility Update – Mt. Milligan,” 2009). The mill is designed to process 60,000 dry metric tonnes per day and produce 400 dry metric tonnes of concentrate per day averaging 25.5% Cu and 40 ppm Au. Concentrate is delivered by truck and trailer to Mackenzie followed by rail to Vancouver for overseas shipping to various customers.Mount Milligan is considered a “zero discharge” operation meaning no process or surface water will be discharged to the environment. As well, stockpiling is very limited and is only permitted for a short period of time. This scenario presents several unique challenges. Scheduling of ore/waste production must be carefully planned as waste rock is used to build the tailings storage facility (TSF). Reagent selection is also important as persistent chemicals will have a tendency to build up in reclaim water which feeds the process water tank."

"A number of Reports of Investigations pertaining to the extraction of potash from cal¬cined polyhalite have been made by various members of the Nonmetallic Minerals Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines. These reports describe results obtained in the study of samples of polyhalite (2CaS04.K2S04.MgS04.2H20) from deposits of possible com¬mercial importance in Texas and New Mexico.3Storch and Clarke6 in their initial paper presenting data on the properties of Texas polyhalite demonstrated the desirability of calcination and subsequent hot extraction with water as a satisfactory pronedure for treatment of this potash-bearing salt. Their preliminary data have been supplemented by an additional report7 dealing more particularly with the leaching of raw and calcined polyhalite with water and with saturated sodium chloride solu¬tions. Further data8 have been reported as a result of experiments made in a small labora¬tory rotary-tube furnace under various calcination and extraction conditions. Hot water was used as the leaching solution in all of these tests.In addition to the data on calcination and extraction, two processes as proposed by Storch and Clarke have been published by Wroth,9 and more recently a number of very promising processes have been proposed by Storoh and Fragen.10"

The Bureau of Minas has been charged by the Congress with the responsibility for administrating the provisions of the Federal Coal-Mine Safety Act. One of the important duties of bureau inspectors under this act is to determine whether proper measures are taken to prevent mine explosions, which in moat miner includes Judea adequate rock dusting The investigation made after the explosion in Orient No. 2 mine, December 21, 1951, showed that much information is lacking on the adequacy of current rock-dusting and duet-sampling practices in the United States. To obtain such information, an intensive sampling survey was conducted by the Bureau in an Indiana coal mine. This paper summarizes the more Important findings from this survey, describes special samplings at several Pennsylvania coal miners, and discusses related studies in the Bureau's Experimental coal mine.

THE Columbia Chemical Division of the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. is at Barberton, Ohio, 35 miles south of Cleveland. For many years large tonnages of limestone have been brought to the Barberton plant from distant points. The stone is here burnt in vertical kilns, the resultant product then hydrated and the hydrated lime used in chemical processing. To eliminate the expense of these shipments, the company decided to investigate a limestone bed known to exist on company property at Barberton, where the stone is used. The bed lay at a depth of more than 2000 ft. and was known locally as the "Deep Lime." Chemical analyses of sludge from churn-drill holes made some years ago proved that the limestone was of sufficient purity to warrant diamond-drill exploration. Four diamond-drill holes were put down at well-spaced intervals, to represent fairly an area of four miles by one mile. Cores logged as to chemical and physical conditions were found to compare closely, and to corroborate the earlier evidence that the limestone was of superior quality for chemical use. A plant of 300 tons per hour was subsequently decided upon. SITE The yard at the chemical plant was already so congested that location of the projected mine within its area could not be considered. Eventually a site was selected 2 miles northwest of the plant, near the main line of the Erie Railroad. Here 412 acres were owned outright by the company and stone rights were obtained on 250 additional acres. This location required a transportation line of nearly 2 miles (8800 ft.), crossing two major highways, and to avoid interruption of deliveries to the plant, overpasses were planned. GEOLOGY The limestone in the immediate vicinity lies about 2200 ft. below the surface. Geologists* identify this stone as Delaware of Devonian age. It is overlain by 18 ft. of unconsolidated (sand and gravel), 100 ft. of water-bearing sandstone, and finally 2080 ft. of shale into which sandstone in thin layers is interbedded. The contact of shale and limestone is abrupt, flat-lying and very pronounced. Berea sandstone, often found at 520 ft., is absent, but Euclid sandstone was encountered, together with a seepage of oil and a small amount of methane gas. The limestone bed itself is 345 ft. thick, and overlies 200 ft. of gypsum. The lower part becomes dolomitic as it approaches the gypsum. A detailed study of the drill cores indicates that the upper 50 ft, are highest in lime and reasonably low in silica. The physical make-up shows several separating cherty layers. Monitoring slope displacement in open-pit mines can help predict collapses and prevent serious damage, injuries, and fatalities. Early detection of movement may indicate the need to modify slope geometry, initiate dewatering if the slope is wet, or consider artificial support measures such as cable bolting. Slope monitoring at the Berkeley pit was carried out with varying degrees of intensity and continuity for about 15 years. Some of the old mine records are still intact and accessible. Slope monitoring data can therefore be collected and published for the benefit of other mine operators. Because prediction of slope failures is empirical in nature, publication of several well documented case studies will be a valuable contribution to the industry. Background - Berkeley pit Open-pit mining of copper from the Berkeley pit, located on the east side of Butte, MT, began in 1955 and ceased in 1982. During that time, about 1 Gt (1.2 billion st) of material were removed to form a pit about 1.8 km wide by 2.1 km long (6000 ft by 7000 ft) at the rim, and 550 m (1800 ft) deep as measured from the high hill on the northwest side. From the south side, the pit only measures 365 m (1200 ft) deep. The Berkeley pit was first owned and operated by Anaconda Minerals Co., and subsequently by Arco. Following its closure in April 1982, the mine began to fill with water. Washington Construction purchased the property in 1986, and Montana Resources Inc. began mining to the east of the Berkeley pit in July 1986. Numerous instances of slope failure were recorded during the course of mining and several intensive geotechnical investigations were conducted in an effort to optimize the mine design. One of the last and most comprehensive studies was initiated in 1977. For purposes of geotechnical analysis, the mine was divided into nine design sectors on the basis of geologic conditions, geographic orientation, and economic importance (Fig. 1). Only two of these sectors - the concentrator and the southeast corner - are considered here. Material properties were obtained from several studies of samples collected from the mine and adjacent areas. This Bureau of Mines publication consists of an overview of the mine waste management research currently being conducted by the Bureau. The following papers, given at a Technology Transfer Workshop, emphasize the increasing importance of research related to the safety and environmental considerations of mine waste disposal In recent years. Current work related to legislation passed in the last 10 years and their subsequent standards includes the development of adequate monitoring systems, development of stability and seepage prediction and control techniques, control of runoff water, and control of leaching solutions. Selected topics are included here that cover coal mine waste disposal, embankment slope stability monitoring, flow failures of mine tailings impoundments, and controlled burnout of abandoned coal mine fires. The projects described provide a current documentation of problems being addressed.

Studies of the effect of composition of steel on hardenability by Grossmann,' and as-quenched hardness by Field2 and by the authors, have made it possible to predict the results of quenching when the composition and cooling rate are known In order to extend the application of the hardenability calculation to the quenched and tempered condition in which steel is finally used, a survey has been made of the hardness changes caused by tempering. From this study a method has been developed for the prediction of hardness and tensile strength of steel in the tempered condition. The method of calculation was developed from Rockwell C hardness tests on quenched and tempered Jominy specimens and is expressed in Rockwell C hardness units. It is of an additive type in which the degree of softening from as-quenched hardness is estimated. Tem-pred properties may be calculated within about plus or minus 5 Rockwell C hardness or plus or minus 15,000 lb. per sq, in. tensile strength. This degree of accuracy is less than that necessary for the control of heat-treatment, but is adequate for the comparative evaluation and selection of alloy steels. The formula indicates that tempered hardness is primarily dependent on as-quenched hardness and, as in the hardening reaction, the progress of tempering is controlled mainly by the carbon content. Alloys tend to retard softening by a secondary hardening mechanism in which the alloy appears to migrate from ferrite to the carbide phase. The factors for the effects of alloys in tempering vary so much from the effects of alloys in hardening that different steels of equivalent hardenability may, after like heat-treatment, differ considerably in tensile strength. Procedure In developing the method for calculating tempered Rockwell C hardness, simple and complex steels were tested over a range from 0.08 to 0'65 per cent carbon and up to 2.68 per cent manganese, 2.18 silicon, 3.50 chromium, 4.94 nickel, and 1.06 molybdenum. The steels were made as small induction-furnace heats at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, Inc' The accuracy of the method was finally checked on a variety of carbon, low-alloy and high-alloy types of heat-treating steels produced under commercial conditions. The method was based on a study of tempered Jominy bars, and its validity was tested by correlation with the center hardness and tensile strength of oil-quenched and tempered bars from 1/2 to 4 in. in diameter. The method of calculation was derived from the differences in Rockwell C hardness between as-quenched and quenched and tempered Jominy specimens. THIS apparatus was designed primarily to meet the demand for a quick, efficient stopping to seal off the burning area temporarily during a mine fire, but it can be used in any circumstance where an immediate brattice is required for ventilation control. In using the old style brattice, mine-rescue workers have found it difficult, in smoke-laden drifts and stopes, to erect an effective stopping with wooden frame and canvas. Stulls must first be cut to the proper length, the canvas tacked in place, and the numerous irregularities of the walls and back must be caulked. This operation requires the employment of axes, saws, and hammers, which cannot easily and safely be handled in dense smoke. The fire fighters have often been forced to abandon their brattice, unfinished, because of the rapid approach of the fire, or because of the exhausted sup- ply of oxygen in their breathing apparatus. "A mathematical model has been developed for flotation circuit simulation. This model was designed to investigate the effect of varying the circulating loads and to determine whether an improvement in overall efficiency could be gained by a size separation prior to flotation.Model parameters were obtained by regression to plant data. Highly correlated parameters in the model were combined to reduce the number of parameters so that the need for excessive data gathering was eliminated. Mass balance smoothing was used to obtain a consistent data set for regression.The results of the simulation indicate that for the same grade of concentrate, an increase in copper recovery of 0.6 per cent may be Possible by increasing the circulating loads. The results of the simulation also indicated that recleaning of the plus 200-mesh material may be beneficiaL."

The use of acid ferric sulfate solution as a lixiviant for chalcopyrite concentrates has been of little interest from a practical standpoint due to the formation of a tenacious layer of elemental sulfur which severely impedes the reaction progress. CuFeS2 + 4Fe+3 ?Cu+2 + 5Fe+2 +2s° For example, an acid ferric sulfate leach of chalcopyrite concentrate results in only 12% copper extraction in a three hour leach at 93°C. Experimental results suggest that particle size is the only controllable variable which has a significant effect on the rate of acid ferric sulfate leaching at ambient pressure. Size reduction of the concentrate prior to leaching was exam¬ined using various methods of grinding. Of the grinding methods considered, attrition grinding was found to be the most effective. Leaching of an attritor-ground product (median particle size 0.5 microns) resulted in approximately 90% copper extraction in a three hour leach at 93°C. Energy measurements suggest that the costs associated with attrition mill¬ing are not unreasonable. Evidence indicates that "activation" or stored strain energy is not responsibile for the enhanced reaction kinetics of the finely ground concentrate, but rather the experimental results can be explained simply in terms of the increased surface area due to size reduction. Leaching reaction mech¬anisms operative in the acid ferric sulfate system are discussed and the application of ultra-fine grinding technology to other systems is considered.

In a continental environment, sediment mobilisation, dispersion and deposition are mainly controlled by mass gravity and streamflow processes. Alluvial sedimentary systems have an important economic value because of their capacity to host mineral resources. In the Hamersley Province, alluvial iron deposits (including the well-known detrital iron deposits and channel iron deposits) play an increasing role on the commodity market. Alluvial deposits exploration is challenging and generally involves geomorphologic and stratigraphic field studies, as well as expensive exploratory surface sampling and drilling. We applied a new surface processes modelling technique to investigate iron rich material, ie the erosion product of bedded iron formations -dispersion in the Hamersley Province. LECODE is a 3D-parallel surface processes forward modelling code designed to compute surface flow and solve erosion, transport and sedimentation on the geological time scale. The code offers new quantitative ways to better understand how sedimentary deposits develop in intra-continental and channel environments. Here we show that our integrated forward model is capable of opening a window to the construction of sedimentary architectures, including facies distribution, deposit thickness and development of heterogeneities such as mineral traps over the modelled domain. The model results represent 1 Ma of surface evolution and are validated through comparison to published paleovalleys map and known occurrences of iron ore deposits. This numerical modelling approach allows for the first time to track alluvial materials from source to sink through time, test existing geological models and faithfully reproduce the first order distribution of alluvial iron deposits in an area of interest. This work strongly suggests the presence of iron rich alluvial deposits reserves under cover, in unexplored detrital fans in the Fortescue Valley. This method, potentially coupled with sediment geochemistry and basin analyses studies, has the potential to maximise alluvial iron deposits exploration success, while reducing exploration cost and associated environmental impact.CITATION:Duclaux, G, Salles, T and Ramanaidou, E R, 2013. "Ongoing research is reported aimed at improving the properties of mesoporous silica-based coatings on various substrates for optoelectronic or medical applications. Tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) was selected as the silica precursor, and amphiphilic triblock copolymers poly( ethylene oxide)- poly(propylene oxide)poly( ethylene oxide) as the surfactant micellar template or structure-directing agents. Cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) was also used as a control agent. The effect of the templating agent and type of substrate (glass, Si, and Ti) on the mesoporosity, particularly on the alignment of the mesochannels, has been investigated. Mining is a fundamental activity on which modern society and the world's economy are entirely dependent. Mining investors, large and small, invest on an international scale, frequently being active in several countries.   Prior to committing investment to new countries, the prudent investor will consider the risk involved by analysing a number of physical, financial, administrative and political parameters that impact on the potential financial returns it is seeking. This paper considers these risk factors in relationship to New Zealand and six competitor countries. The conclusion is that for reasons largely within the control of our politicians, New Zealand is a high risk country for mining investors.
