Acidless and fluoless flotation is a new method for separating feldspar from quartz at the natural pH value of tap water in the absence of any acid and fluoride and other inorganic reagents. The paper introduces the production application of this method in plants and research results on the mechanism involved in the flotation method.

Princess colliery is operated by Old Sydney Collieries, Limited, a direct descendant of the General Mining Association of London, England, which, in the first quarter of the nineteenth century, pioneered in coal mining in Nova Scotia. The coal worked is a 5 ft. 6 in. seam known generally through the Sydney coalfield as the Harbour seam but referred to locally as the Sydney Main. Entry is made by shafts, 680 feet deep, sunk in 1871 on a headland forming the northern entrance to Sydney harbour. From them extend the main roadways of the colliery, a distance of 700 feet to the shore line and a further distance of 14,700 feet in submarine areas to a total length of 15,400 feet. It was the first colliery in Nova Scotia designed to work submarine areas. Lateral development extends across a frontage of 16,000 feet and the submarine area from which the coal has been extracted is slightly over 6 square miles. There yet remains sufficient territory ahead of the workings to assure a future life to this colliery estimated at over 80 years at the current rate of production. In this area the seam dips at 6 to 7 per cent and face workings have reached a depth of 1,690 feet below the sea level. Until 1923 extraction of the coal was by room-and-pillar, followed by the drawing of the pillars. At that date the superincumbent strata had reached a thickness of 1,400 feet, resulting in heavy weighting on the roof and severe side pressure on the coal ribs. In combination with a soft, heaving pavement this created a set of conditions involving great difficulties and expense in keeping open places driven in the solid sufficiently long to permit recovery of the coal in the pillars by methods and equipment then available. The operator was forced to resort to extraction by longwall as the only economical method of winning the coal.

The interstitial phases formed by the transition elements with carbon, nitrogen and boron constitute a unique class of substances which are of considerable technical interest because of their well developed metallic properties and their high hardness and melting points. They are also of interest from the point of view of structure. It was pointed out by Hagg1 some years ago that the principal factor determining these structures was the relative sizes of metal and metalloid atoms. He predicted that if the ratio of the radii of metalloid to metal atoms was less than 0.59, the metal atoms would be arranged in a close-packed fashion of relatively simple type. This prediction has been amply confirmed. It appears, however, that this specification applies most generally to those structures in which the metalloid atoms occupy isolated positions in the lattice and there is no tendency for strong binding between the metalloid atoms themselves. The series of borides of the type MeB2 formed from the transition elements of the fourth (Ti, Zr) and fifth (V, Cb, Ta) groups of the periodic table provide an opportunity to investigate this situation further. If one takes as a basis the radius of 0.87 A for the boron radius and the Goldschmidt values for the metal atoms in 12 coordination, then the radius ratio varies from 0.54 for zirconium to 0.64 for vanadium, which latter is considerably greater than Hagg's limit of 0.59. It was of interest, therefore, to see if these five elements would form borides of the MeB2 type and have simple isomorphous structures. When this investigation was initiated, relatively little information had been published on the structure of this group of borides. McKenna2 reported the preparation of ZrB2 by a carbon reduction process. Its structure was hexagonal and the approximate lattice constants were given as a = 3.15 A, c = 3.53 A. Ehrlich3 reported the structure of TiB2 as being of the C 32 type with a = 3.02, c = 3.21 and c/a = 1.06 A. Recently, Kiessling4 published the results on ZrB2, showing it to be one in which the metal atoms are arranged in a simple hexagonal lattice with the boron atoms in flat sheets, midway between the layers of metal atoms. The structure is C 32 type with a = 3.169, c = 3.530 and an axial ratio =1.11 A. He also states that CbB2 and TaB2 are isomorphous with ZrB2. Preparation of Borides The borides of titanium, zirconium, columbium and tantalum were made by the electrolysis of fused salt baths after the method described by Andrieux.5 The bath, totalling about 6500 g in each case had the following general composition: Metal Oxide + B2O3 + CaO + CaF2. The actual proportions of the ingredients were determined for each individual case. Although Andrieux reports the preparation of vanadium boride by the same electrolytic method, several attempts proved unsuccessful. However, it was possible to prepare VB2 by the carbon reduction method used by McKenna to produce ZrB2. The mixture consisted of V2O5 + 6B2O3 + 11C and the reduction was carried out in an induction heated graphite crucible. This method proved satisfactory for ZrB2 and TiB2 and undoubtedly the others could be made in the same way. The borides, which were all in the form of fine gray metallic crystals from the electrolytic bath or gray powders from the reduction process, were carefully separated from other constituents and analyzed chemically for metal and boron content. The densities of the boride powders were measured using a standard 10 cc pyenometer at 18°C and ethyl benzene proved to be the most satisfactory liquid for this purpose. X Ray Technique The boride crystals, as prepared, were too small for single crystal examination so that powder techniques were employed. Patterns of the finely ground borides were prepared, using the Norelco recording X ray spectrometer. A NUMBER of articles have been published, notably those by R. S. Handy, R. T. Hancock and A. P. Watt in Engineering and Mining Journal, dealing with the calculations involved in ore dressing.. These publications demonstrate both, the importance of the subject and the lack of success in developing a generally recognized method for comparing enrichment effects. Considering that we may wish -to compare enrichment results on similar or dissimilar ores, that we may desire to make the comparison on the basis of either the absolute or the economical efficiency, and that the number of factors upon which the result depends is large, the question arises whether it is possible to set up a positive method for such calculations. In the following pages it is our aim to show that a sure, complete and successful way to overcome existing difficulties has been found. "The enrichment behavior of phosphorus in CaO-SiO2-FeOx-P2O5 slag was studied by making an investigation on the distribution of phosphorous content in slag and 2CaO·SiO2 phase. The research results showed that the existing 2CaO·SiO2 solid particles in slag were the sites for the phosphorous enrichment. The enrichment process of phosphorus in CaO-SiO2-FeOx-P2O5 slag can be recognized as: mass transfer of phosphorus from bulk slag toward the surface of 2CaO·SiO2 particle, superficial dissolution reaction of phosphorus to 2CaO·SiO2 and diffusion of phosphorus through the product layer of 2CaO·SiO2-3CaO·P2O5 solid solution to the inner of 2CaO·SiO2 particle. Compared to the 2CaO·SiO2 particles with larger size (500µm to 1000µm), the completion time of enrichment was shorter for the particles with smaller size (less than 50µm).IntroductionDuring ironmaking and steelmaking, significant amounts of slag are produced. Contrast to the high utilization of ironmaking slag, the treatment of steelmaking slag is more difficult and challengeable, and therefore, an alternative approach is to recycle the steelmaking slag inside the ironmaking and steelmaking process itself. The main limitation to the reuse of steelmaking slag inside the process is that the refining process may be aggravated caused by the phosphorous accumulation if it is used in the blast furnace burden [1]. At the same time, the phosphorous content of steelmaking slag (approximately 1%~5% P2O5) is too low for it to be used as raw material for fertilizer [2, 3]. Moreover, owing to the diminishing supply of global iron ores with low phosphorous content, the control of phosphorus in iron and steelmaking processes has become an increasing problem, and as a result, more amounts of high phosphorus containing steelmaking slag are produced. Therefore, a valuable approach is quite appreciated in which the steelmaking slag is recycled within the ironmaking and steelmaking process and at the same time, the high phosphorus-containing phases in the steelmaking slag, suitable for use as fertilizer can be separated and recycled effectively [4]."

Foundation problems due to collapsible and expansive soils are well known throughout the arid western United States. Millions of dollars are spent annually to counteract the effects of such soils for both new foundations and existing foundations suffering from settlement or heave. Over the last 20 years helical screw piles have come into wide-spread use as a permanent deep foundation element for these problem soils, especially in the arid western United States where, in some areas, they are a standard of practice. Independent research resulting in recognition by every national building code in the United States has legitimized helical screw pile technology. Once thought of in terms of light structural underpinning, helical screw piles of today are designed to take heavy structural loads, vertical and lateral, tension or compression, including seismic loads. With proper pile grouping, design capacities for column loads over 4,500 kN (1,000 kips) are attainable. This paper discusses design considerations specifically dealing with collapsible and expansive soils: soil investigation parameters, predicted settlement and long-term creep, heave in expansive soils, downdrag in collapsible soils, shaft slenderness buckling, maintaining shaft alignment during installation, refusal condition, water migration along the shaft, lateral loading, cyclical loading for seismic loads and machine foundations, corrosion, helix durability during installation, the installation torque vs. capacity equation, and design methodology. The paper concludes with several case histories where helical screw piles were used for new structural foundations and to underpin existing failed foundations in St. George, Utah, Cedar City, Utah, and Denver, Colorado, USA, sites of some of the most expansive clay and collapsible soil in North America. Soil descriptions and performance histories are presented.

Although the role of the collector has long been thought to play a predominant role in coal flotation, recent investigations by the authors show that the frother plays an equally important role. These investigations have included extensive testwork in several coal preparation plants and in the laboratory. The factors which were investigated include the absolute level of collector and frother addition, the ratio of frother to collector additions, the type of frother, and the particle size distribution of the feed. Results from this testwork reveal strong interactions between these factors as well as the necessity of considering these factors in order to optimize the reagent regime.

The National Mine Health and Safety Academy near Beckley, W. Va., is dedicated to reducing accidents and improving health conditions in the mining industry through education and training. Though this basic mission remains unchanged, the Academy now serves a much broader mining community than it did when established in the late 1960s. From its original emphasis on training federal coal, metal, and nonmetal mine safety inspectors, the Academy has expanded its programs to reach mining industry and labor representatives, state agency employees, and university students taking mining-related courses. The Academy's resident programs, short courses, seminars, and continuing education courses cover a wide range of subjects and various experience levels, but all have been developed with one idea in mind - to reduce accidents and health hazards through education and training of the widest possible audience.

THE manufacture and treatment of metals comprises operations whose effectiveness depends in large measure upon diffusion phenomena. The significance of such phenomena has, for a few simple cases, long been understood, but in more complex cases it has not been adequately recognized. This paper presents a mathematical analysis of some of the cases in which diffusion leads to the formation of a new phase within the metal, and this analysis provides a basis for interpreting quantitatively many apparently diverse experimental observations recorded in the literature, some of which are outlined in the following pages. OBSERVATIONS RECORDED IN LITERATURE An outstanding instance is the general type of phenomenon in which diffusion of an element into an alloy is followed by a phase change, which most frequently is a reaction (precipitation) of the diffusing element with one or more components of the alloy to form a compound. Thus in certain alloys heated in contact with oxygen not only the usual oxide scale appears but, in addition, beneath the surface, a well-defined zone in which free oxide particles are dispersed with notable uniformity. This zone, commonly referred to as the subscale or zone of internal oxidation, is remarkable in that the visible boundary between it and the unaltered metal is usually sharp. Such a subscale, which appears to have been recognized first in oxidized copper alloys, has been described and studied by C. S. Smith,1 by Rhines,2 and by Rhines, Johnson and Anderson;3 but it appears also in other alloys when they are exposed to conditions that bring about the precipitation of some compound, not necessarily an oxide. Another clear case of this same kind is the diffusion of carbon into a steel containing an element such as molybdenum, chromium, vanadium or tungsten, whose carbide is less soluble in iron than iron carbide, the result being that some part of that element is precipitated as a dispersed carbide. A similar phenomenon may occur on the welding of two alloys each of which contains one of a pair of elements that react to form a compound or a new phase of any sort. But in addition to the precipitation of a compound formed from the diffusing element, other effects may result merely from the presence of the diffusing element. For instance, if homogeneous austenite, nearly saturated with respect to carbon, is heated in contact with silicon in the absence of oxygen, one would expect to find, behind the several iron-silicon phases analogous to a scale, a zone of austenite containing dispersed carbide, because of the fact that silicon decreases the solubility of carbon in iron. As still another example, oxidation of an alloy may result in diffusion toward the surface of one or more of the constituents; for instance, during oxidation of a steel containing an element such as copper, which is less prone to oxidation than iron, there is a notable enrichment of copper just beneath the scale-metal interface. A GENERAL extension and appreciation of the stereocartographic principle of precise mapmaking is evident. Under the stimulus of war, many radical improvements in aerial photography, and in airplane and motor con? struction are indicated for the future. A survey of advanced military designs points to the conclusion that the familiar radial motor is destined for oblivion under the impact of the inverted "V" type.' The latest German inverted "V" design of 1000 hp. is 68 in. long whereas British and American motors of the same power are 72 and 94 in. respectively, suggesting a horsepower-weight efficiency ratio in favor of the former. Application of the pressure cooling principle has made possible the development of in-line air? cooled engines which offer many advantages, such as small frontal area, unobstructed vision for the pilot, freedom from vibration because rotative speeds are not limited by fundamental unbalance of reciprocating parts, freedom from excessive bearing loads, and less weight per horsepower.

"INTRODUCTION During the years 1941 to 1945, the United States produced less than one-half of one percent of all primary nickel, whereas the nation's consumption of the metal amounted to nearly three-fourths of the world's supply. Although postwar nickel consumption probably will be less than wartime consumption, trade- estimates for the next 10 years are well above the average established during the 1930-1940 decade. The greatest consumption is expected in nickel alloys, particularly nickel-alloy steels. 3/ The greater use of nickel cast irons and nickel-clad metals also signifies an expanding nickel market. In anticipation of the postwar demand for nickel, and realizing the seriousness of the ""have not"" position of the United States with respect to this metal, the Bureau of Mines, sent an engineer 4/ into the lower Copper River region of Alaska during the summer of 1944 to investigate the nickel deposits near the head of Canyon Creek. Samples from the Spirit Mountain nickel prospect were sufficiently encouraging to justify more intensive exploration. As a result, a program of surface trenching, systematic sampling, and detailed mapping of the property was adopted and directed by a Bureau of Mines engineer 5/ in the summer of 1945."

With the current trends towards the concentration of extraction to fewer but higher production units in deeper seams, often of higher coal rank, the role of methane drainage ranges has become critical. As mines exploit seams at greater depth and more remote locations there has been a need to extend the lengths of methane drainage ranges and to increase the capacity of the surface pumps. This trend has highlighted the need to effectively simulate the operation of a methane drainage range in order to produce the optimum design and operation of a safe and economic system. This paper describes the development of such an analytical tool. The application of this computer model is illustrated by the analysis of the operation of the drainage system of an extensive mine. The paper concludes by considering the development of a [Knowlege Based or Decision Support System] which will assist the ventilation engineer in assessing the current performance of an existing drainage range and will suggest possible remedial modifications or design strategies which may improve the system performance. INTRODUCTION In order to maintain the general body methane levels to below predetermined statutory threshold limit values (TLV's) on major longwall production units there are, for a given production rate, two major complementary control devices which may be employed by the ventilation engineer. These are the combined design and application of a competent mine ventilation and methane drainage system. The methane drainage system should be designed so as to maximise the capture of the methane (firedamp) from the seam being mined and the strata gas liberated in the vicinity of the extraction zone from gas bearing seams or other reservoirs of gas situated at above or below the mining horizon. The design fresh air quantity entering the face should ensure that under normal operating conditions the methane entering in the vicinity of the face is rapidly dispersed and dilute to well below statutory TLV's. The drainage system must therefore be designed to maximise the capture of the methane gas liberated to minimise the amount of gas which enters the ventilation airstream. GAS DRAINAGE The inherent dangers of methane emissions in mine workings have been a problem of concern to mining engineers for many years. To alleviate the risk, methane drainage has been employed for some years to capture the gas before it becomes a hazard to the operation of the mine. The method of drainage employed will be dependent on a number of factors which include the longwall mining method and production cycle employed, the characteristics of the coal seam being extracted and those of the adjacent gas bearing strata. The New South Wales coal industry is a highly mechanised well organised industry which has developed from an annual production of slightly less than 13 million tons in 1950 to over 33 million tons in 1969. Although continuous miners were not introduced into the mines until 1950, by Jillle 1969 the percentage of coal won by these units was 87.3. The paper describes mining conditions in the various coalfields of the State, their complexities and problems and how these have been dealt with. The introduction of fully mechanised long wall faces has presented a challenge which has been accepted and descriptions of systems in use are discussed. Major expansion of the industry is anticipated to meet the requirements of the growing Australian steel industry, for local power generation and to meet the increasing demands of overseas markets.

Titaniferous ores serve as a major feedstock for the production of a white titanium dioxide pigment, a titanium metal and several other titanium-based products. Such ores exist mainly as heavy mineral sands. Ilmenite is upgraded to intermediate products namely synthetic rutile and titania slag through the synthetic rutile route and the reductive smelting route respectively. Tronox KwaZulu Natal Sands (Pty) Ltd recovers high titania slag via the reductive smelting process while slag is used as a feedstock to the pigment industry and furnace dust from the gas cleaning plant is disposed as waste. Previous investigations have shown that such furnace dust can contain significant amount of titanium-bearing minerals. This study looks at the characteristics of the furnace dust obtained from Tronox KwaZulu Natal Sands and investigates a possible high temperature recovery route in detail. The furnace dust was examined by using x-ray fluorescence, x-ray diffraction, microscopy and laser-diffraction size analyses. The characterization work showed that the furnace dust was rich in titanium and iron, containing 49.4 wt% ??????2 and 29.5 wt% ????2??3. These oxides were associated with Si, Mn, K, and Al oxides as impurities. A Carbolite® vertical tube furnace was used to investigate the extent of formation of titania slag and metallic iron on a laboratory scale at 1500°C, 1600°C and 1650°C. The laboratory reduction tests revealed that the slag samples with an equivalent titanium dioxide content ranging from 70.9 -76.9 wt% at 1600°C and 1650°C could be obtained. The Fe content of the metallic iron samples produced ranged between 93.0 and 97.1 wt%. The experimental results were found to be in relatively good agreement with the FactSage simulations, both of which demonstrated the potential of producing a titania slag and a metallic iron from the furnace dust.

The geophysical exploration carried out by the Brazilian government through the Mineral Resources Development Co. (CPRM) to discover and develop Brazil's mineral resources is discussed. Particular mention is made of procedures specially adapted for contracting companies specialized in geophysics, CPRM's activities, statistical data from study programs, as well as the financial investments committed. More than 500 000 km of aerogeophysical surveys have been carried out by CPRM in the last four years, and it is expected that more than 600 000 km will be flown in 1974 and 1975, at an investment of approximately $30 million.

Flexoid tubing for ventilation and some of the reasons for its use in re-opening old workings at the Union Pacific Coal Company's mines at Cumberland, Wyoming. , These mines are located on a branch line off the Oregon Short Line Railroad, about sixteen miles south of Kemmerer. The seam averages from 16 feet to 20 feet thick and is split about six feet from the bottom with from six inches to four inches of fire, clay; and is covered by a heavy sandstone roof about 45 feet thick and a fire clay floor about 15 feet thick. Pitch of seam 21 degrees. These mines were opened up with 5 openings on the pitch to the west, with main slope, north and south manways and north and south aircourses on 50-foot centers with parallel entries driven north and south at right angles to the slope and rooms turned on 50-foot centers up the pitch ; entries being 350 feet apart and chutes used in the rooms. Several years ago there was a heavy, squeeze came on these mines which necessitated shutting down all of No. I Mine below the third entry, the slope being down to 12 entry; also shutting the lower end of No. 2 Mine down from the twelfth entry to fifteenth entry and from the third entry down to the tenth entry, so as not to work too much territory at the one time. These mines are very gassy and were subject to heavy bumps during the squeeze ; also at the present time. In reopening these slopes, aircourses and entries for the recovery of the pillars, ventilation was quite a problem, as the squeeze had caused them to be practically tight; also the rooms for about 50 feet from the entry and the face of the rooms for about fifty feet. These rooms in the open space being either filled with Methane or depleted air. It was found in opening up these entries that in driving back entries parallel with the top entries for ventilation. which had to be skipped along the barrier pillar left from the face of the rooms of the entry below, that we had more bumps or bounces which made it a dangerous proposition to nine, as it will be noted as stated that the entries, room necks and face of rooms were more or less squeezed tight, showing that all the weight was centered on these points and the more they were disturbed the more it relieved the overlying pressure and something had to give; hence the bumps or bounces which have filled slopes, aircourses, entries and rooms with coal from the ribs and face, for hundreds of feet, throwing cars off the track, both loads and empties, and throwing track up to the roof and discharging timbers. We found it necessary to abandon driving back entries and have used Flexoid tubing with small blower fans to open up these slopes, aircourses and entries which has proved a success. The largest potential reserves of manganese in Nevada are in the Pioche district. To date, these large reserves of 10-to l2-percent manganese cannot be upgraded economically. Other large, low-grade deposits, such as the Virgin River and Boulder City deposits in Clark County, cannot be considered immediate sources of manganese. Reserves of the principal manganese deposits in Nevada, based on the most reliable estimates, total about 17 million tons analyzing 7.6 to 13.6 percent manganese. Most of the deposits are of a type that cannot be prospected systematically but have been prospected and developed in the course of productive mining operations. To realize production from low-grade deposits that are amenable to concentration, a ready market must be provided. Thus far, Government stockpiles have been the major outlet for these low-grade ores. Research and experimentation over a period of years have led to development of several processes technologically applicable to these low-grade ore bodies, but their economics is not sufficient to allow competition with imported ores on the open market.

[Currently the cost of carrying out 'in situ' geotechnical investigation programmes or installing and operating monitoring systems at construction or mining sites is rising var." rapidly. This is primarily because of our ever increasing labour rates. As a result of this problem efforts are no,, being made develop techniques for the economical; collection of large quantities of geotechnical data relating, to such problems as done stability evaluation, the behaviour of underground openings, or 'in situ' testing procedures. The efforts to reduce the labour content. are particularly apparent in those procedures which have traditionally been manpower intensive e.g. 'in situ' permeability testing where an entire drilling crew and their associated eguipment have been on standby while testis has been carried out; or data collection in underground construction operations where much tine is typically wasted obtaining or maintaining access to instrument sites. In an attempt to illustrate one specialist consulting company's approach to the problem of reducing investigation costs, this rarer examines four recent developments in the field of geotechnical investigation and monitoring which have come about during the last two Years as a result of cur research and development programme. Although these techniques and devices have been developed for specific projects, they all have broad applications in the geotechnical field and they are indicative of the direction in which this company feels developments will take place.]
