Limited research has been conducted related to the development of mathematical optimization models for production scheduling at large surface coal mines using the area, i.e., strip, mining method. Increased economic and technical challenges have led to a new interest in production schedule optimization models for these type of mining operations like those currently applied to model underground and open pit mines. While area mines share similar characteristics to both open pit and underground metal operations, neither an open pit nor underground production scheduling model adequately depicts an area mine mathematically. We present an integer programming model with blending constraints and discuss the challenges and opportunities related to the implementation for area mines as well as future research in area mine production scheduling.

Summary During the last three years the discovery of gold in the belt of volcanic and sedimentary rocks extending eastward from the Porcupine and Kirkland Lake gold-fields has caused a great deal of excitement in mining circles. The area is heavily drift covered, and every aid to the location of veins is eagerly grasped. A knowledge of the physiographic history of the area is of the utmost importance in the application of many of these aids. Evidence is presented to show that glacial erosion has lowered the general elevation very little below the pre-glacial level, and that many glacial erratics have been carried less than three miles southward. Probably a knowledge of the general geology of a: region was never more necessary to the understanding of the distribution and continuation in depth of the mineral veins than in this area. Four distinct granites occur in the region, and gold-bearing veins are genetically associated with only one of these. Two types of quartz-feldspar porphyries have been found, only one of which has any bearing on the locus of the mineral veins. Many other examples of this complexity of associations might be cited, but everyone goes to show that in most cases the economic importance of the deposits can be realized only after the regional geology is understood. A series of sandstone, limestone and shale intruded by granite lies unconformably below the Keewatin lavas. The latter are intruded by a gneissoid granite and are overlain unconformably by the thick series of Timiskaming greywackes and silts. These are intruded by carbonated syenites and syenite porphyries which have since been rendered somewhat schistose.

Pictured on these pages are the seven RMCMI Scholarship Award Winners for the 1992-93 year followed by a brief profile. All winners were present as guests of the Institute at the June convention in Beaver Creek, Colorado to receive recognition at the Institute Awards Luncheon Monday, June 28. 1993. Each state vice president served as the host for the collegiate winner. In addition to receiving a plaque from the Scholarship Chairman, Alan Czarnowsky, each winner receives $750 tuition credit for the coming academic year. As this is a continuing award, the winners from the previous year will receive another $750 for tuition credit in their senior year if they have maintained good academic standing and are recommended by their university. A resident from each of the eight RMCMI member states is selected from among Board approved institutions. Criteria for these awards to be made in the spring annually is (1) That the award be made to a sophomore student and used as tuition during the junior year. (2) That the recipient be both a U.S. citizen and a resident of the member state. (3) That the recipient have good academic standing, be pursing a degree in a mining related field and have an expressed interest in Western coal as a possible career path. The scholarship program includes curricula other than those in the mining departments, but in engineering disciplines, such as geology, mineral processing and metallurgy. Contributions to this worthy project are tax deductible to each individual RMCMI member or his firm. Through annual donations of $100 or more, the Patrons of the Institute fund the scholarship pro- gram and the various vice presidents contribute the travel expenses to convention for these outstanding young collegiates. "Tailings generated during the upgrading of ore present a major challenge for the mineral processing industry. On one hand, the processing of tailings requires added capital input. On the other hand, increased difficulties in obtaining permits for dams and landfilling and increased costs associated with storage and tailings management also result in increased costs. To promote sustainability and make tailings management economical, added value must be generated from the waste material. This might be possible through the recovery of the metal values in the waste. This work discusses the possibilities of recovering metals from multimetal tailings through leaching in a stirred tank. The characteristics of the tailings are crucial and the distribution of the metals within the different size fractions is used to identify the most attractive route for the hydrometallurgical step. Leaching of nickel and copper is further investigated using acids at different concentrations. The leaching of base metals is possible at acidic conditions. Increased temperature and concentration of the leaching agent promote the dissolution of the metals, as could be expected. With simultaneous dissolution of several metals the dissolution mechanisms are difficult to identify. Furthermore, as several metals, not all of them being target elements, are leached another challenge arises from the selective recovery of those metals from the liquid phase."

The DeLamar Silver Mine is a Joint Venture between Earth Resources Company, the Canadian Superior Mining Company and the Superior Oil Company. The property is a consolidation of several old operations in the district. The more widely known are the DeLamar and Sommercamp Mines. The location is 20 miles northeast of Jordan Valley, Oregon and 55 miles southwest of Boise, Idaho. The mine is on the south slope of DeLamar Mountain in the Owyhee Mountains of southwest Idaho Initial interest started in 1969 with serious exploration beginning in 1970. The feasibility study was completed in 1974, and in 1975 Mountain States Engineers were retained to design and build the plant. Processing of ore began in March of 1977 with the first bullion poured in April of that year. The plant is currently processing some 2200 TPD of ore with a grade of four ounces of silver and 0.03 oz. of gold per ton of ore. Cyanide consumption is 2.5 lb/ton, zinc consumption of 0.3 lb/ton and flocculent consumption of 0.5 lb/ton. A flowsheet is shown as Figure I. The grinding circuit is of two stage design. The primary mill is an 18 ft. dia. by 9 ft. long semi-autogenous unit. The secondary mill is a 9 1/2 ft. dia. by 15 ft. long overflow ball mill. The mill discharges are combined and sent to 15 in. cyclones for classification. Cyclone overflow reports to leaching with the underflows reporting to the ball mill. The cyclone feed pump is an 8X6 metal case pump. The primary mill has 1000 installed horsepower and rotates at 68% of critical speed. The ball mill has 700 installed horsepower and rotates at 72% of critical speed. Because the primary mill is horsepower limited the ball charge is varied to maintain the desired throughput. The mill power is held at 980-990 HP by modifying the feed rate. Four inch forged steel balls are added any time the ore feed fails to reach 100 tons per hour for four hours. During periods of extremely hard ore, the ball charge has been as high as 14 v/o and at other times the mill has operated fully autogenous for weeks.

Coal bump, or coal burst, is one of the catastrophic disasters in underground coalmine. Among them, approximate 80% of recorded destructive burst events were occurred in mining roadway. The bump panel is often formed by hard coal seam and hard main roof; however, the cause and course of the bump events are not understood yet. This study provides a fundamental theory for the causality and progress of a coal bump event occurred in longwall roadway. Considering hard roof condition commonly existed in bump panels, we think that the abutment pressure induced by suspended roof behind the working face is the trigger of a coal bump event occurred in the roadway. Once high abutment pressure is concentrated on the hard coal seam around the working face, the roof and the coal around the working face form a seesaw-like structure, which leads the roof in front of the working face moving upwards. The movement of roof uplifting in front of the working face is a well evidenced phenomenon in practice, namely, roof rebounding, which causes unloading of the normal stress on the roof-coal interface around the roadway. A rib coal block bump mechanical model has been developed to establish the critical equilibrium equation of the coal block. Result shows that, the force source of coal bump is the horizontal ground stress perpendicular to the rib surface; and the slippage of the coal block is caused by the unloading of the normal stress acting on the roof-coal interface. Based on the causality and consequence theory of coal bump developed in the paper, several new prediction and prevention measures have been developed, including roadway design and in-tunnel reinforcing methods. The commonly used prevention measures in present have also been discussed. This paper presents a comprehensive explanation of coal bumps occurred in longwall roadways, from abutment pressure at working face forming seesaw structure to roof rebounding leading slippage of the rib coal mass into roadway, which provides a fundamental theory for coal bump causality mechanism and prediction and prevention technology.

This paper presents two case studies of large diameter driven tubular steel piles for the ongoing Woolgoolga to Ballina Pacific Highway upgrade (W2B). This project forms part of Australia’s largest regional infrastructure project and will upgrade about 155 kilometers of highway to four-lane, divided road. There are more than 170 bridges on W2B, and driven tubular steel piles are adopted on 43 bridges between Glenugie and Ballina. Driven piles terminating in soil or basalt is a big challenge faced by both designers and piling contractors due to 1) the uncertainty of expected pile unit shaft and base resistance in different soils; 2) whether plugging is formed; and 3) highly variable basalt strength and thickness near top of the rock. If these risks are not adequately managed during design or construction stages, it could lead to unexpected project delay, extra time and cost or pile toe damage in basalt. This paper describes two case studies, one for piles designed to terminate in soils and the other for piles designed to terminate in basalt. How these risks were assessed and managed during detailed design, procurement, hammer selection, pile installation and verification will be discussed in details with lessons learnt summerised in the conclusion.

"An investigation has been conducted to describe the effect of grain refiner (e.g.,Ti) or modifier (e.g., Sr) on the microstructure of an Al-11.3wt%Si alloy produced by the Ohno horizontal continuous casting process using a heated mold so as to obtain directional solidification at high cooling rate of 300 to 2000°C/s. Experimental results demonstrated that the directionality of the primary a grain was promoted by the addition of0.2 to 0.4%Ti or by the addition of0.02%Sr, whereas the addition of0.6%Ti suppressed this directionality. Feathery a grains were promoted by the addition of 0.2%Ti, while these feathery a grains were suppressed when over 0.4%Ti (grain refinement) or when 0.02%Sr was added. The addition of Ti also resulted in increased coarsening of the eutectic Si in these Al-1 l.3wt%Si alloys.IntroductionThe mechanical properties of conventionally cast Al-Si alloys can be enhanced through judicious control of the casting parameters, by the addition of grain refiners (e.g., Ti) and by the addition of eutectic modifiers (e.g., Sr).[1-3] The Ohno continuous casting process[4-5] uses a heated mold (maintained at a temperature above the alloy liquidus temperature) to produce a casting with a mirror surface free of shrinkage defects. The process is especially suitable for the production of high quality and non-deformable rods of small diameter. Venezuela, once a world's top gold producer until 1886 Witwatersrand discovery, did let fall its role then because of a serious lack of infrastructure and population, and lately (since World war II times), because of discouraging mining and taxation laws, laying upon an oil prizes bonanza. Recent research leading to estimates of about 5.000 mt. of gold, mainly related to the greenstone belts of the Guiana Precambrian shield outcropping in Venezuela, are opening the scope for both Government and international investing and mining companies, for gold exploration and development projects in the country. 'Gold-telluride mineralization was deposited in quartz veins which cut a Late Cretaceous tonalite pluton emplaced near the southern margin of the Peninsular tectono-stratigraphic terrane in south-central Alaska. The gold-bearing veins formed shortly after the development of a widespread Cu-Mo sheeted quartz vein system. Early mineral assemblages consist of quartz, white mica, pyrite, and arsenopyrite (wall rock only). Subsequently, pyrite. sphalerite, chalcopyrite, zoned tetrahedrite and gold precipitated within multiply fractured veins. Late stage galena, tellurides (altaite, nagyagite, coloradoite), and Pb-Sb or Pb-Cu-Bi sulfosalta with gold constitute bonanza ore assemblages that are variably associated with quartz, white mica, ankerite, and calcite. Fluid inclusion evidence coupled with mineral assemblage paragenesis suggests the depletion of volatiles (C02, H2S) and cooling resulted in the precipitation of high grade gold mineral assemblages.

Bench stability is the basis of sustainability in an open pit mining operation. Taking care of the pit walls while maintaining fragmentation results can prove a challenge. In this study, technical proposals have been developed for extra hard rock mass (UCS>175MPa) with presence of unfavorable structural planes in high copper grade zones. The base case shows low compliance of fragmentation results and a significant loss in berm width, with over size boulders causing low primary crushing rates. Paradigms in current drill and blast design were overcome to improve fragmentation results and achieve objectives.

Experimental methods for studying vapors over solid minerals are reviewed and an especially developed method using atomic absorption is described. The method is used to study vapor pressures over Te. Ag, Au, Ag2Te, and AuTe2 from 250°C through 10S0oe. Vapor pressures observed and, concurrently. sintering properties are significantly altered by the form of the solid. The safety of mining operations is significantly influenced by the in situ stress fields in which the mining excavations are created. From the point of view of planning of mining operations, the in situ stress field is a most important input parameter for valid modelling of excavations. Many in situ stress measurements have been carried out for mining and civil engineering projects in southern Africa over the past 30 to 40 years. A database of in situ stress measurement results and observations has been compiled. This paper presents results extracted from the database which are considered to be of particular interest to mining areas in South Africa. The database will permit the estimation of likely stress conditions in new areas of mining, provide a basis for evaluation of results from future in situ stress measurement programmes, provide a basis for comparison of observed behaviour with expected behaviour, and provide a source of data on which realistic design and layout analyses can be based. The information contained in the database indicates that horizontal to vertical stress ratios in the Carletonville, Klerksdorp and Rustenburg areas are significantly higher than the value of 0,5which is commonly used in mine layout planning.

The weak acid is a by product obtained in a pre-treatment of gases from a copper smelter prior to sulfuric acid manufacture and the main components of this weak acid are: sulfuric acid. copper, arsenic. antimony, bismuth and iron. Usually, this effluent is neutralized with lime and the solid residues are stored in a landfill as a hazardous waste. This work was directed at determining the optimal conditions to recover copper from weak acid using a cementation process before the neutralization of the effluent. The variables investigated are: Effluent temperature, iron scrap amount and acid concentration versus reaction time. The results of these experiments show that the cementation process of copper and the co-cementation of impurities such as arsenic, antimony and bismuth were in accord with the theory of the electrode potentials.

Paper presented at the annual joint meeting of the IMM and IMinE held in Harrogate, 31 January 1991. The Neves-Corvo copper-tin mine is the highest-grade large-tonnage copper operation in the world and is now arguably the most significant producing base-metal mine in Europe, rating in the top ten world producers of both copper and tin. A description is given of the initial exploration work and the development of the project from the orebody discovery in the Iberian Pyrite Belt of southern Portugal in 1977 to full operating capacity in 1990. The chronological account includes discussion of the main organisational, financial, technical and environmental decisions and of the various difficulties encountered, and the challenges of the future are identified. Proper coupling of a geophone to a monitoring surface is probably the single most important step in accurately recording and measuring ground vibrations from a blast. Over the years, a number of monitoring methodologies have been published. Some of these were published as a "standard", by organizations such as the International Standards Organization, others as suggested methods by various authors in papers or text books, or in the users manuals supplied by seismograph manufacturers. These monitoring standards differ, and are sometimes apparently contradictory. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the coupling methodologies from a number of these "standards", point out similarities and differences, and discuss the technical basis behind some of the different methods.

The authors have succeeded in providing additional rigour and clarity to the formulation and execution of the dynamic programming algorithm for optimum open pit limit determination. The inclusion of the blocks on the J + 1 column in the search for Pmax, and constraining this search with blocks assigned a value of negative infinity, ensures an optimal solution within the defmed blocks. The effect of the negative infmity blocks is to preclude mining along the diagonal blocks from the first row that they occur in. Figure 1 graphically illustrates the effects of this on the calculation of P. A practical application for constraining mining with negative infmity blocks is the case where the pit outline is defined by lease boundaries and not by the value of blocks to be removed. Any legal, social or physical constraint could be accounted for in the same way.The danger in applying this technique is that the negative infinity blocks will override any other more profitable solutions that may exist. This is in fact what has happened in the example that the authors use. If a further column is added to the left hand side (column -1) and the calculation is carried out again, a more optimal x-section can be found. (If the negative infinity values are removed the same result is obtained.) This gives a pit value of 112 as against the 108 of the authors' optimal pit. This calculation is shown in Figure 2. Lerchs-Grossman optimization is reliable only if there are sufficient columns available to allow "mining" to optimum depth of the ore body and still allow the pit to break out at the surface within the confines of the columns.This author's approach is to create enough columns each side of the lateral limits of the ore to allow the pit to intersect the surface while still within the confines of the block model. Implementing the methods discussed by the authors helps to reduce the number of columns required to achieve this.

TQM is a term of which most metallurgists have heard and a system of which some have had first hand experience. This paper is designed to encourage further thinking on TQM and how it can effect your organisation. Consideration of organisational culture and objectives are a prime pre-requisite when planning for the implementation of TQM. It is argued that there is no "brand" of quality culture of TQM which can be applied en masse to the mining industry. Definitions ofTQM are proposed, and the essence ofTQM as being about increasing customer service, improving the quality of goods and services, and involving people in their work is discussed, in conjunction with the concept of Customer as applied to the metallurgical industry and TQM. The integration of TQM into Quality Accreditation Stan­dards is then discussed. Finally, examples of the benefits that may be achieved with Implementation ofTQM into metallurgical and operations groups is presented, along with an analysis of the difficulties of implementation into our businesses and operations.

A column flotation system was designed to conduct release analyses of a very finely disseminated, stratiform, copper ore from the Denali Copper Prospect, Alaska. Chalcopyrite is finely disseminated in a carbonate matrix and pyrite is disseminated in both the chalcopyrite and gangue, requiring grinding to 20 microns for adequate liberation. A 25 mm x 2.4 m glass flotation column was designed. The ore and its flotation tailings were repeatedly floated to obtain a rougher concentrate, which was repeatedly floated to produce release fractions. These were analyzed for copper, iron calcium and magnesium. Release curves were plotted. The procedure was replicated at each of two grinds; 99% and 88% passing 37 microns (400 mesh), and should find application for flotation characterization and process selection. Bond grindability work was also conducted.

In the present work compared flotation kinetics of apatite with four different collectors was established. Sodium oleate and rice bra~ oil were used to represent conventional collectors. The new collectors included a sulfosuccinate and a sulfosuccinamate. It was observed that the collection ability of each reagent was very dependent upon the mineral size ranges. The results-were analyzed in terms of size-by-size recovery curves. Flotation rates were also very dependent on size ranges of the mineral particles. One of the new collectors displayed higher flotation rates for coarser particles than the other reagents tested. Synergetic effects were also apparent when a conventional collector was mixed to a new collector.
