Automation, data analytics and optimisation are key trends in the mining industry. Doing more, and better, while expending less resources targets KPIs around efficiency and productivity. With the explosion of data, the next step is to develop an optimal level of processes and systems to harness this data to support value-in use decisions. Typically, significant amounts of resources and effort are invested to develop realistic simulation models. However, models are frequently not integrated with existing systems, and therefore are underutilised. When we consider the specialised process of blasting, integration with upstream and downstream processes is a significant driver to realise sustained improvements and value. The application of genetic algorithms and cloud computing to solving complex mining problems has advanced over the last 15 years, in particular with mine scheduling. Genetic algorithms are unique in that they support true multi-objective optimisation, utilising population-based methods to present trade-offs between multiple solutions. Secure in-cloud processing speeds up the processing, with results delivered in timeframes that are not feasible with desktop computing.

Molybdenum and nickel in black shale ore exists as amorphous sulfides which has highly active, and easily oxide to sulfuric acid and sulfate at low temperature in the presence of excess oxygen. Take advantage of the characteristic to leach molybdenum and nickel from black shale. Oxidation, conversion and dissolution behavior of amorphous colloidal molybdenum and nickel sulfide in pressure leaching process was studied. The effects of stirring speed, temperature, concentration of sulphuric acid, oxygen process and mineral granularity on molybdenum and nickel leaching were investigated. The results showed that dissolution rate increased with increasing temperature and stirring speed, but decreased with increasing concentration of sulphuric acid. And dissolution of molybdenum and nickel from ore only need oxygen without any other reagent.

"OUR INTEREST in estimates of world reserves of lead and zinc is focussed mainly on the information they give about the sufficiency of metal supplies for the future. However, we soon realize that the estimates can be interpreted in several different ways. Accordingly, it is necessary to have some under-standing of the elements represented by a compilation of world re-serves, and we will start by examining the accuracy of the estimates and what they attempt to measure.Variations in Estimates of the ReservesIf we study the estimates of world reserves that have been published in recent years, we note immenediately that they vary over a considerable range. For example, an article by Shea in 1947 gave world reserves as about 36 million tons of lead and 60 million tons of zinc. Shea did not in elude the United States but I have added to his totals the estimates made by the Bureau of Mines for that country in arriving at the foregoing figures. For approximately the same date, the American Zinc Institute and the Lead Industries Association reported world reserves as about 50 million tons of lead and 77 million tons of zinc. A comparison of the two sets of figures shows a mean variation of 30 per cent. For individual countries the difference between estimates can be even larger. A few years ago the estimate of Canada's reserves made by the United States Bureau of Mines was 7.4 million tons of lead and 14.0 million tons of zinc, while the Gordon Commission reported 1 O. 7 million tons of lead and 26.0 mil-lion tons of zinc. In this case the mean variation was 55 per cent."

THE slate industry of the United States has shown a marked decline in value of products made annually since the peak year 1925, although there has been moderate improvement over the lean years 1932 to 1934. In 1940, the value of all slate products sold was approximately 5 3/4 million dollars for a total output of 473,450 short tons. The quantity sold was a little less and the value a great deal lower than the annual averages for the past two decades. Enormous quantities of waste materials result from the quarrying, splitting and milling of slate. Obviously, utilization of such waste material is desirable, not only from the viewpoint of economical operation but also for the purpose of conserving natural resources. One possible use is to produce expanded or puffed lightweight aggregate for use in concretes. Such concretes are strong enough for specific uses, and the advantage of lightness could be obtained in such structures as the walls and roofs of buildings, suspension-bridge roadways and various other applications where weight is a factor. Conceivably, these uses could consume an appreciable annual tonnage. USE OF WASTE SLATES FOR MAKING AGGREGATES The lightweight-aggregate industry has been discussed elsewhere4.5 and need not be covered in detail in this paper. The materials commonly utilized are naturally occurring aggregates such as volcanic cinder, tuff and pumice; by-product materials, such as ordinary cinders and air-cooled slags; and the specially manufactured products, including Haydite, Pottsco, Gravelite, Cel-seal, Superock and Waylite. Slates, however, have not been given the consideration they merit, especially in the United States. In the British Isles, some work has been done' on certain Welsh slates by the Building Research Station to stimulate the use of these wastes. REQUIREMENTS FOR RAW MATERIALS As pointed out by Hughes,4 the lightweight-aggregate industry is segregated in regions adjacent to large cities in order to localize the market and avoid the necessity of long freight haulage. Waste slate from the deposits of eastern Pennsylvania, northern Maryland, and Virginia would meet the basic requirement of any low-priced structural raw material. One apparent advantage is attained when slate waste, normally discarded, is utilized in the manufacture of a by-product. Mining or quarrying costs usually have been assessed against the main product. Some additional grinding might be desirable, but this operation would be relatively cheap, as most slates grind easily. It is believed that virtually all slates, when properly heated, will expand to some degree. However, types that will expand from 3 to 7 times their original volume are preferred. "This paper presents an overview of the major landslide hazards in open pit mines in China, the currently used landslide control and monitoring techniques, and development of a new slope control technique incorporating the reinforcement, sliding force monitoring, remote sensing and forecasting in one system in order to constrain the displacement of the sliding blocks in the landslide to minimized the influenced area and provide precise warnings timely for the imminent landslides. For implementation of the new technique, a novel rock cable with large deformation and high resistance (also known as HE cable) was developed, which can elongate as long as 2m. At the same time, the necessary and sufficient condition for initiating a landslide and energy balance equations are formulated. Based on the proposed mathematical models and Beidou satellite system, the software and data transmission hardware for remote sensing and forecasting were developed the new landslide control technique has been applied successfully in 245 landslide sites in 12 provinces across China. In this article, two practical application cases in the open pit mines are reported.INTRODUCTIONChina is one of the countries in the world with the most widely distributed landslides and suffering the heaviest damage. According to the incomplete statistics, landslide hazards have caused death of hundreds of people and direct economic losses of several hundred million RMB each year. The landslide hazards have a great impact on the life and property safety of the people, safety of the infrastructure, as well as the social stability. Thus development of new techniques for forecasting and prediction of the landslides is imperative and of great importance. In general, the forecasting and prediction of the landslides consists of three major aspects, i.e. sliding time forecasting, landslide activity intensity forecasting and landslide hazard degree forecasting. Since a considerable part of the landslide-suspected area are adjacent to the residential areas or important infrastructures, development of the advanced landslide control and monitoring techniques to cope with the sliding time forecasting problem is more important.Over the past one hundred years, the most widely used slope monitoring techniques are based on displacement monitoring (Xu, et al. 2007; Toshitaka, 1998). In the early days owing to the limitation of the technology and equipment, the ground surface displacement and underground water level change were inspected mainly by man power for inferring the possibility of a landslide. In recent several decades, more and more ground surface displacement monitoring devices were brought to the market, such as the automatic total station, theodolite, digital level, borehole inclinometer and GPS based instruments, etc. Based on these modern techniques, some advanced instruments have been developed and applied to the landslide monitoring, for example, the “landslides early warning monitoring system” (Leonardo, et al. 2002), the “In-SAR” technique (Reevea, et al. 2000), the GPS and satellite geodetic survey based technique (Reevea, et al. 2000), and real-time telemetry technology (Xu, et al. 2007). These monitoring approaches have made significant contributions to the landslide disaster monitoring and forecasting. The major limitations for the ground surface displacement monitoring techniques are lie in the inconsistence between the displacement in ground surface and that in the sliding surface for the sliding mass, resulting in low degree of forecasting accuracy."

During the commissioning phase, which is usually the most exciting part of a project involving the design and construction of metallurgical plant, the commissioning engineers interact between the client and the project management. The client wants to see whether all the equipment that he has bought and that, in his opinion, has taken far too long to erect will actually work. Project management expects the commissioning people to con¬vince the client that this is the best design ever developed and that never before have time and money been spent so well. The commissioning team has to fulfil these expectations. Commissioning work is a `shirt sleeve' function, with little of the glamour that is normally associated with fields such as engineering and operations. The team usually works in a partially completed plant with more temporary than permanent services and little (if any) office accommodation, normal working hours do not apply, and the demands made on the team change suddenly and dramatically. This article outlines the activities of the commissioning group and the systems used to smooth the commissioning path.

Surface mining refers to the process of removing the material (over- burden) overlying a coal seam and exposing the coal so that it can be loaded out and conveyed by trucks or other methods to the preparation plant or other facility. Surface mining has not always been important in the coal industry. In the early 1900s, almost all of the coal mined in the United States was mined by underground methods. In 1900, about 192 Mt (212 million st) of bituminous coal were mined and less than 1% was mined by surface methods. The development and use of larger equipment has allowed surface mining to gain prominence throughout the years. Table 1 shows the total production of coal by mining method in the United States for ten-year periods since 1920 and indicates the growth of surface-mined coal production. Surface mining will undoubtedly continue to account for a large percentage of the coal production in the US for many years because: 1) The capacity of surface mining excavators has continued to increase. Today, mining companies are using shovels (see Fig. 1) which are able to move up to 137.6 m3 (180 cu yd) in each bite and draglines (see Fig. 2) which move up to 168.2 m3 (220 cu yd) in each bucketful. 2) Increasing tonnage from the thick western coal seams is being produced by surface mining methods. 3) Surface mining has normally had lower costs and a better safety record than underground mining; 4) Surface mining normally recovers a- much higher percentage of the coal reserve than can be recovered by underground mining. 5) Some coal measures can best be extracted by surface mining [ ] methods because of geologic reasons such as the nature of the roof or bottom, thickness of the seam, multiple bedding, etc.

INTRODUCTION The Panna Maria Uranium Project is located in South Texas, between San Antonio and Corpus Cristi, approximately 10 kilometers (6 miles) north of Karnes City, Texas. The tailings disposal facilities are located immediately south of the mill area and the central portion of the west pit. The mine and mill drainage pond is located north of the tailings pond. Location of the facilities is shown in Figure 1. The tailings pond is a disposal area for mill process wastes and has a capacity for storage of approximately 9 million metric tons (10 million tons) of tailings. This capacity is adequate for approximately 10 years of milling at a maximum rate of 2,700 metric tons (3,000 tons) per day. The tailings disposal facilities were designed to essentially eliminate discharge of contaminated waters to preclude degradation of surface streams or ground water. Water levels in the ponds will be maintained. through reuse in the mill and by evaporation. WASTE CHARACTERISTICS The sources of waste that is stored in the tailings pond include runoff from the mill area and tailings from the mill processing. The tailings consist of a sand slime slurry; the percentage passing the No. 200 sieve varies depending on the ore material, and it is generally in the range of 10 to 25 percent. The tailings have a density of approximately 1.2 metric tons per cu m (75 lb per cu ft) and an average specific gravity of 2.55. The liquid effluent from the mill consists of waste solutions from the grinding, leaching, extraction, and washing circuits of the mill. These solutions have an initial pH of 1.5 to 2.0 and contain the remnants of the leaching agents used in the mill process, sulfates, some silica as the primary dissolved solid, and trace quantities of soluble metals. This liquid is discharged with the solids into the tailings pond and is diluted by rainfall and runoff from the tailings dam. Runoff from the mill area, drainage from the mine area, and de-oiled water from truck washing facilities is discharged into the mine and mill drainage pond. Runoff from the mill area drains approximately 28 hectares (70 acres) from offices, shops, the mill site, the ore pad, haul roads, and adjacent areas. Mine drainage is collected in the mine area and pumped to the mine and mill drainage pond.

The article is to apply Ballistic theory of single thrown body to take the throwing course of thrown body as the movement of particle system, and then delimit the total of thrown body into units of thrown bodies, and regard the heaping shape of single thrown body as a perfect triangle, and found a quantitative relation between macro-geometry parameters of perfect triangle and designed parameters of explosives. The theory has been adopted in blast practice and gotten good effects.

The movement of solids by pipeline is an art dating back well over 100 years as evidenced by many references in the literature. Even though all of the early pipeline transport systems were based on trial and error and relied mainly upon the designer's experience, hydraulic transport offered distinct advantages in convenience or cost for the chemical, mining, and civil engineering industries. It became well established for in-plant process lines, dredging, waste disposal, and other uses almost exclusively for short distances. During more recent times, much research work has been done in an attempt to understand the underlying principles involved in transporting solids in a fluid. Design criteria for pumping slurries have evolved to the point where pipelines designed for distances of several miles to several hundred miles can be accomplished successfully. Consolidation Coal Company designed and built a 10-inch diameter 108-mile long line1 for transporting coal in the 1950's and operated it from 1957 to 1963 when it was placed in mothballs because of falling freight rates for rail shipment. More recently, the 273-mile Black Mesa Pipeline2 was built and is operating. There are other examples of long distance pipelines,3 but all are for specially prepared fine slurries which allow the pipeline to be operated more economically.

"With rapid development of Iron and Steel industry, plenty of metallurgical dusts and sludges are generated, which have not been effectively utilized because of their poor hydrophilicity and bad ballability. Agglomeration and roasting of metallurgical dusts & sludges with a new-type composite binder are studied in this paper. The results indicate that the dosage of the new binders can be decreased to 2.5 wt% from 3.5 wt% when using the wet-grinding process. Under the optimal conditions of briquetting pressure 2070 N/cm2, briquetting moisture content 13 wt%, roasting temperature 1000 °C and roasting time 40 min, the qualities of the green, dry and roasted briquettes meet the requirements of the industry production. The finished products have the compression strength of more than 2000 N/cm2, which can be used as high-quality burdens for blast furnaces.IntroductionWith rapid development of Chinese Iron & Steel industry, there are more and more serious resource shortage and environmental pollution existing. Converter sludges, containing 30% ~ 40 wt% moistures, are typically difficult for recycling [1]. Foreign processing technologies for sludges treatment are relatively advanced including cold-bonded agglomerates for blast furnace, RHF reduction for the dusts and sludges with high content of Zn and Pb, smelting and reduction. Domestic iron and steel companies use a small amount of sludges in sintering. However, the sludges have the characteristics of high moisture and containing harmful impurities, which directly affect the sintering mixture permeability and product quality [2-5]. There are also other technologies such as production of metallized pellets, cooling agents for steelmaking, etc [6]. All of these deficiencies and applied are not in large-scale."

"Sampling may be mandatory for safety or environmental reasons. It may be because the value of a sale needs to be determined or to provide important data for investments. Whatever the reason, an incorrect sample will come at a risk. Only the person that relies on sampling data can imagine what the potential cost of such risk is.Sampling itself has a cost too; the direct cost of a quality control department and indirect cost for interrupting a process, such as stopping a conveyor belt during loading. If all material is the same then only one small sample is enough. But if all the material is different, then a very large sample must be tested; in the conveyor belt scenario it must be stopped very frequently and the associated cost will be high.A good sampling plan finds the proper balance between risk and cost. A good sample must be small enough to handle yet large enough to be representative for what information is required. All good samples have three things in common: there was proper access to the material the sampling tool allowed equal probability of particles being selected nothing was disregarded, everything was included.This too is the core of Gy’s ideal sampling scenario, where all particles have the same probability of being selected and included in the sample. There is risk of bias when part of a lot is excluded from the sample. Extra care is needed when sampling particularly heterogeneous, segregated or layered materials. The sampling tool should never systematically leave out a portion; it shall not push aside large or hard particles. Wet samples shall not stick to the sampling tool. Among all spraying processes, cold spraying has attracted a special attention in recent years, both as a coating - and more recently - as a rapid manufacturing technique. The interest in this process is mainly because of the fact that the deposition of spray material takes place at moderately low temperatures, and thus, oxidation and unfavourable microstructural changes can be alleviated. In this process, a highly compressed gas, flowing through a de Laval nozzle, accelerates the particles of the spray powder to high velocities of up to 1200 m/s. Although there is no melting of particles prior to impact on the substrate, cold-sprayed deposits can be denser and more tightly bonded as compared to the equivalent deposits produced by conventional thermal spraying methods. The present contribution focuses on this unique aspect of cold spraying. Modelling of particle impact, combined with various experimental observations, is employed to illustrate that bonding of particles and hence material deposition occurs through shear instability - associated with severe plastic deformation and localized heat generation - at the interacting surfaces of particles and substrate. The results of modelling also provide an insight to the influence of material and process parameters on the critical velocity and on the microstructural properties of cold-sprayed deposits.

In 2010, the foreseen increase of copper grade in feed concentrate at the Horne Smelter was a significant challenge to maintain a steady copper flow throughout the process. The Horne Smelter process includes a Noranda Reactor, a Noranda Converter, pyro refining vessels and anode furnaces. Of the many challenges involved, improving the single casting wheel performance was one of the key topics. Its reliability had to be improved to meet the new production objectives, as anode copper production was to increase from 170 000 to 225 000 tonnes/year. A multidisciplinary team was dedicated to improve the casting wheel availability. The improvement project allowed pinpointing failure modes and reviewing operational and maintenance practices. The common understanding developed by the team allowed improving small components with a high gain-to-effort ratio. The project allowed reaching operational targets without any significant investment. INTRODUCTION In operation since 1927, the Horne Smelter, located in Rouyn-Noranda, in Quebec, has undergone several technological changes since its original construction. Built to smelt the Horne mine concentrates, the smelter also accepted some local custom feeds from the first years of operation. When the Horne mines stopped production in 1976, the plant became a 100% custom smelter. With the development of the Noranda Reactor (1973) and Noranda Converter (1997), the Horne smelter increased its productivity and improved its environmental performance. Continuous improvement of the Horne process allowed maintaining a high level of flexibility in the operation of the smelter, while improving its overall capacity.

"Many of the valid international building codes state that the lateral support provided by the soil is sufficient to prevent buckling of fully embedded piles. However, the development of small diameter micropiles and especially the use of high strength steel have evolved to applications including high capacity elements. The ultimate structural load bearing capacity of a pile in a cohesive soil is decided by examining which gives the lowest value, the peak buckling load and the resisting moment provided by the surrounding soil medium or the structural capacity of the pile cross section. In both cases, the initial deflection of the pile is a significant factor when the axial load bearing capacity of the pile is determined. Steel micropiles are joined commonly with mechanical splices. A less rigid mechanical splice is often a weaker hinge that allows the pile to bend and deflect more during installation increasing the initial deflection of a pile. In addition the less rigid splice element decreases the bending capacity of a jointed pile section and the ultimate axial load capacity of the entire pile. A series of FE analysis performed for various pile sizes suggest that the steel pipe piles including separate pile sections and mechanical splicing elements should have the combined bending stiffness of EIshaft = 0,75 × EIpile. This requirement yields to the buckling resistance of at least 96 % of the solid reference pile with the sameinitial eccentricity in similar soil conditions.IntroductionMany of the valid international building codes state that the lateral support provided by the soil is sufficient to prevent buckling of fully embedded piles. The potential buckling of these very slender high capacity piles in soft soils may in many cases be the controlling design factor of the pile, especially with end bearing micropiles.A typical sequence of soil strata in Nordic countries, such as Norway, Finland and Sweden, constitutes of friction soil or dry crust clay on top of soft clay followed by till. This soil stratum often rests on solid bedrock of granite or gneiss. Conditions like these are suitable for slender end bearing piles subjected to buckling and especially steel pipe piles where most of the material is located at the edge of the cross section. Other reasons for using slender steel pipe piles are for example fast installation with minimal waste, efficient manufacturing and relatively well established design and execution procedures. Minimum quality criteria’s regarding splices for steel pipe piles are recommended to be set as national provisions to ensure quality and comparable procurements in foundation business."

While it is true that taxes, especially income taxes, whether they be federal, state, or local, are not usually thought of as a "cost" of doing business, it is equally true that these tax costs do reduce the distributable profits just as much as the cost of power, supplies, or labor. Therefore, the consideration given to taxes is often as important as that given to other costs. Hopefully you will recognize that, within certain limits, taxes can be controlled to an economic advantage. The tax laws as now imposed are quite complex. Many of these laws and the regulations thereunder involve many factual determinations, technical considerations, and specialized valuations that can best be made by people trained in the specific area concerned. A substantial amount of a tax liability turns on the proper consideration given to issues involving facts and principles which are peculiarly engineering in nature. The importance of these "engineering" issues in tax administration has been significantly increased in recent years by our rapidly advancing technology, automation, stepped-up mineral and oil exploitation, new industries such as electronics and nuclear power, and the extension of percentage depletion to all minerals. These specialized requirements incorporated in the law are so technical that full consideration can not be given by people with a non-engineering background.

Attempts to rationalise the geological environment of nickel sulphide deposits associated with Archaean ultrabasic rocks has produced much speculation as to the origin of the sulphides and the relative importance of geochemical, mineralogical, textural and structural characteristics of the host rocks. From an economic viewpoint the object of such work is to establish geological criteria which can be used as an exploration guide. Exploration procedure for nickel sulphide mineralisation of the 'Kambalda type' (Hudson, 1972), which occurs at or near the basal contact of Archaean ultramafic flow units and lenses consisted of geological mapping, surface prospecting with soil sampling and rock geochemistry.

The vacuum filter operating variables that influence cake moisture are discussed. The influence of temperature control, particularly through application of steam to the cake, is emphasized. Results of pilot plant studies on filtration of fine hematite concentrates are presented and discussed, and are shown to support the theoretically-derived conclusions. Results on fine magnetite concentrates are also used to support the argument. The relative merits of disc and drum filters from the standpoint of cake moisture are discussed. Moisture content has always been recognized as one of the most important properties of concentrates used as pellet plant feed. Most iron ore concentrates are produced by wet methods, and are finally de-watered on filters. Obviously, a real economic advantage accrues to the ability of control the moisture content of the filter cake within the range required for optimum pellet production. Another consideration, also, has been receiving increasing attention recently. Transoceanic shippers of concentrate cargoes are critically assessing the hazards of excess moisture. The nature and magnitude of these risks have been described, ' and it appears that their elimination may require that residual moisture be somewhat lower than the limit for proper pelletization. Coarse, very free-filtering materials, such as the products of spirals, are usually best handled on top-feed types of machines. The moisture content of the cake may be held at a specified value by proper design and operation, taking into account cake thickness, air-flow rate, and drainage time. Fine-grained concentrates, with which we will be concerned here, must be filtered on Drum or Agidisc machines. With many of these materials, it is possible, by proper design, to meet cake moisture requirements with a conventional filter station. The first installations to produce high-grade pellets from magnetic taconites fell in this class. In fact, the design criteria were developed in connection with operations of Reserve Mining Co. at Silver Bay, inn.,2 and these have been verified repeatedly in other mills. The trend today, however, is toward the production of more difficultly dewatered concentrates. This is due on the one hand to the increasing attention being given to non-magnetic ores, which tend to be far slimier, and therefore much more retentive of moisture, than the magnetites. On the other hand, the pressure to improve the grade of the magnetic ores is leading to finer grinds, which also are more difficult to dewater. In the latter case, the decision to improve grade in an existing operation by finer grinding for better liberation may lead to two unattractive alternatives: 1) substantially higher bentonite consumption, plus the risk of poorer quality pellets, from high cake moisture, or 2) installation of a thermal dryer. There is, however, a third alternative. In recent papers by two of the authors3,4 it was shown that for many materials a significant decrease in cake moisture can be obtained by applying live steam to the cake face during the drying part of the filter cycle. Further, this limited drying appears to have distinct economic advantages compared to thermal drying. It is the purpose of this paper to explore the third alternative. To do this, the results of an extensive pilot study of steam filtration of a hematite flotation concentrate will be critically examined. This study was sufficiently broad so that a number of alternate suggestions (besides steaming the cake) for reducing moisture content were tested, and comparative data for both Drum and Disc filters were obtained. The work was particularly interesting since the concentrate has a high Blaine surface, and is therefore particularly difficult to dewater to the levels required. FILTER CAKE MOISTURE The significant difference between concentrate filter cake as discharged from the filter, a cargo of that same filter cake during or after shipment, and a green ball formed from that filter cake is in the relative volume of voids, or porosity. The Manassas Quarry is a large industrial stone quarry in Northern Virginia owned and operated by Vulcan Materials Company. The quarry experienced instability in a portion of the north wall, which included toppling failure in a metasediment and movement on a major fault zone. It was necessary to take remedial measures to stabilize the wall and create good quality final pit walls.
