The following observations on the mineral composition of the lead-zinc ores at Captain's Flat, New South Wales, are based upon the examination of a collection of specimens made during a brief visit to the mine in January, 1942, in conjunction with earlier studies of specimens and mill products, which have 'been the subject of various Mineragraphic Reports, Captain's Flat is about 35 miles south of Canberra, and is connected with the main line from Goulburn to Bombala by a branch line to Bungendore, 23 miles away from the mine.The geology of the mine has been described by Kenny and Mulholland2 and by Harper.3 The country consists of Silurian sediments, which have been invaded by a composite sill of quartz-felspar-porphyry. Both sediments and sill have been folded gently, the axial lines of the folds trending north and south. In the vicinity of the orebodies the folds are steeper, and thru,st faults are associated with the anticlines. The intense compression and shearing that accompanied the faulting has converted the adjacent porphyry to schist. The Captain's Flat orebodies occur along such a zone of shearing and faulting, on the eastern limb of a steep, north-pitching anticline. At their southern end the orebodies are enclosed in the slates underlying the porphyry, but the northerly pitch of the fold carries the slate to greater depth in the northern part of the mine, where the orebody lies beween schistose porphyry on the hanging wall and massive porphyry in the footwall.THE OREBODIESThe orebodies occur along a N.-S. strike length of 4,200 ft., and from the point of view of mining, fall into three sections: the Elliot's Section to the north, the Central Section, and the Keating's Section to the south. The Keating's Section is separated from the Central Section by 500-600 ft. of mineralised ground of so low a grade as' to be called barren, and is offset about 125 ft. to the 'east of the Central body by an oblique fault striking N.300E. "Expert Online is a software system that makes use of novel artificial intelligence technology, known as the Interpreting Expert System (IES), to mimic an informed expert on a minerals processing plant. Previous implementations of the IES were only capable of explaining the controller actions. Expert Online will also take on the more difficult task of explaining the complex process behaviour to the operator in simple language.The primary functions of Expert Online are to serve as a training tool and an online assistant to operators. However, it is also expected to be of value to supervisors and plant managers.A number of additional features are envisaged, including different operating modes, fault detection, speech synthesis and advanced message filtering. Expert Online will increase the operator’s knowledge of the process and his/her understanding and acceptance of the complex control systems. Users would be supplied with relevant and timeous information required to make informed decisions to ensure smooth plant operation.This paper discusses the structural design of Expert Online for implementation on the latest version of MINTEK’s open control platform, PlantStar, as well as several advances and additions since the previous implementations of the Interpreting Expert System."

In order to remove heavy metal ions from a large volume of wastewater with a low ion concentration, ion flotation appears to be promisingly effective. In the ion flotation process, because of the high ion removal percentage, the amount of water recovery percentage is a very important factor which determines the process efficiency. However, ion flotation suffers from relatively high collector concentration to achieve the high removal percentage to the desired limit, which subsequently increases the water recovery. In this study, functionalised graphene oxide (FGO) was synthesised, using a chemical method in the ion flotation process, applied as a collector for increasing process efficiency by reducing the collector consumption and water recovery. The high ion removal was achieved with both collectors of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and FGO, while the water recovery with a collector of SDS was 3.4% higher than that with a collector of FGO. The results indicated that the FGO could be effectively used for high ion removal and low water recovery in the ion flotation process. An evident connection exists between chemical and calorific phenomena: the most important, of our sources of heat, the combustion of coal, is nothing else than a chemical reaction. Not satisfied with this indefinite statement, investigators have attempted to establish a more precise correlation between these two orders of phenomena, and have questioned whether there be not a necessary connection between the possibility of a chemical reaction and the algebraic sign of the quantity of heat which it would call into play (i.e., liberate or absorb). This question possesses the highest interest for metallurgical chemists. But the study of it by experimental methods only could not completely elucidate it. To arrive at a definite solution, it was necessary to appeal to a science much more general than chemistry,—namely, that of energetics, which embraces all the physical sciences. We can place absolute confidence in its conclusions, because they rest upon a proposition which can scarcely be denied, namely, the impossibility of The main facts in the history of the development o‡ this field of Triassic coals have been already set before the Institute in the papers of Mr. Oswald J. Heinrich, a former member of the Institute and the superintendent of the mines at Midlothian. † From these and other references to the field, it appears that coal was known to exist here as early as 1701; for on the 10th of May that year Colonel Byrd reported to the Colonial Council of Virginia the discovery of coal. Coal was mined from 1770 to 1780; but the amount shipped is unknown. It was much used in Richmond at this early date for gratefires. In 1789 shipments were made to northern ports. During the first half of the century just passed, mining operations attained in this field their greatest development, the number and extent of the collieries and the tonnage of coal raised per annum being greater for that period than for any similar period since. The maximum annual output exceeded 100,000 tons, while in two years only since the Civil War has the amount of coal raised exceeded 50,000 tons. This field covers about 150 sq. in. Its outline and the position of the strata in which the coal-outcrops occur are shown on the accompanying map, reproduced from the latest survey by the U. S. Geological Survey. A large amount of the stereological error associated with liberation studies can he eliminated by assessing areas instead of linear intercepts. The presentation of a simple geometrical model as a stereological 'worst case' allows calculation of the worst possible grade/recovery curve for a given assemblage of areas. The true results are expected to lie in the window between this worst case and the hest possible case, represented by uncorrected data. The width of this window typically corresponds to an error margin of about 5% grade at a given recovery. An indication of where the data lies within the range of possible grade/recovery results may he obtained from a qualitative analysis of the locked section complexity. Assemblages consisting of texturally complex locked sections (ie. containing many mineral nuclei) are likely to exhibit minimal stereological bias and therefore will tend to lie close to the uncorrected side of the grade/recovery window.

As part of an investigation of the deep structure of the Waihi Basin, an extensive set of resistivity measurements was recently collected by DSIR Geology & Geophysics. The objective of this work is to map deep resistivity changes throughout the Waihi area in order to contribute to a better understanding of the regional geophysical structure. This research is also aimed at improving techniques for locating 'deposits of epithermal mineral resources, and helping to establish their origin and genetic relationship to fossil geothermal systems.   The results indicate that the basin south of Waihi is underlain by an extensive layer of low resistivity, modelled as a 5ohm-m layer several hundred metres thick. Lake sediments (mudstones), as exposed in the south western part of the basin, near Waitawheta, are the most likely source of this low resistivity layer, although hydrothermally altered clays and/or elevated temperatures are other possible causes. Strong northeast trending anisotropy is also observed, implying structural links from Waitawheta through to Golden Valley. The observed resistivity pattern is consistent with a æburied calderaÆ or æfaulted depressionÆ structural model for the basin, as inferred from gravity and magnetic data.

The drill sampling and evaluation of the Piney River ilmenite property was carried out during the early part of 1944 by E. J. Longyear Co., using the company's standard core-drill outfits to complete 44 holes to an average depth of IIO ft., from which were collected 1100 samples. The Piney River ilmenite-apatite lode is 25 miles north of Lynchburg, in Nelson and Amherst Counties, Virginia (Fig. I). Its elevation is about 900 ft. above sea level and it lies in the old pre-Cambrian complex of crystalline rocks that make up the Piedmont physiographic province lying east of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The terrain is gently rolling and well watered and is drained by the Piney and Tye Rivers, which are tributary to the James. Geology The Piney River ore body comprises the upper, weathered part of a tabular basic rock, which occurs in a large area of granite-gneiss. The section containing profitable ore is about 3000 ft. long. It is separated naturally by thinning, into northeastern and southwestern segments with widths of 300 and 100 ft. respectively. The dip averages 4.5° southeast but steepens locally (Figs. 2 and 3). The unaltered rock is an even, granular mixture of feldspar, ilmenite, and apatite, to which Watson1 gave the name Nelson-ite. The decomposed ore body, which is now being exploited by open cut, is a yellowish clay material in which black ilmenite and glassy apatite are the only conspicuous minerals. An economically important structural feature of the deposit is a banding of minerals coinciding with the dip and strike of the dike. This is more pronounced in the footwall of the northeastern part of the intrusive, where there is also a higher than average concentration of ilmenite. According to Watson,' the TiO2 content of the Nelsonites of this region ranges from 10 to 42 per cent, while P205 varies from 4 to 15 per cent. It is inexpedient at present to disclose exact metal content of the Piney River ore body; suffice it to say that the average tenor lies well within the extremes noted by Watson. Sampling Methods and Procedure During a preliminary inspection of the ore body, Longyear engineers surmised that because of its soft, clayey character, drill sampling would yield little core, therefore they made all possible preparations to procure accurate samples of the drill cuttings, or sludge. The first requisite in obtaining representative drill cuttings is to secure their full recovery. The existence of quarries near or even within the boundaries of urban centres is the cause of many environmental problems, despite their significant contribution to the cities’ development. Hence, the question arises as to how quarrying activities can be compromised within the spirit of sustainable development in big cities. In the case of Athens, two dominant, though opposite opinions have been formed. The first argues that all quarries must be forced to suspend their activities as soon as possible; the second presses for the continuation of quarrying. Consequently, the question is transposed on the dilemma between improved environmental conditions and economic development. This paper demonstrates that if a complete redesign is employed to specific, nonvisible quarrying sites, the continuation of quarrying activities is acceptable. It is a good compromise between the economical demand and environmental protection.

THE occurrence of twins in large ferrite crystals, made by a new process, was reported in a recent note. This paper describes a typical case of such twinning and suggests, on the basis of the observed facts, why smooth slip-planes are rarely observed in this metal. METHOD OF PREPARATION The material In which the crystals here dealt with were grown was made from 1/8 -in. Armco iron welding rod containing C, 0.04; S, 0.037; P, 0.003; Si, 0.008, and Mn, 0.02 per cent. This rod was cold drawn into wire about 1 mm. dia. A piece of this wire was supported vertically and was locally heated in hydrogen at atmospheric pressure to about 1400° C. by an alternating current (60 cycles per sec.) of about 35 amp., passed through it between a pair of travelling contacts about 8 cm. apart. The rate of travel for the case in hand was 12 cm. per hr. After some 30 cm. of the length of the wire had been heated and cooled in this manner the whole wire was immersed for a few seconds in dilute nitric acid, not restrained by alcohol. Etching was continued until, as nearly as could be judged by eye, the original smooth cylindrical surface of the wire was no longer capable of specular reflection.

Alcoa of Australia Limited owns and operates a 150 MW power station adjacent to the coastal township of Anglesea in south western Victoria.The power station was constructed in the mid 1960s to supply electricity to the Company's smelter at Point Henry, near Geelong, and is fuelled by high quality brown coal mined at the site in Alcoa's lease area.The open cut mine, producing approximately one million tonnes of coal per year, utilises a backfilling method and has carried out progressive regeneration of those completed areas since the mid 1970s.

Error calculations, load selections and timing criteria are identified as the three key functions which affect the suitability of a demand controller for any particular application. The advantages of simulating the demand control application on a computer are described, and applications of a demand controller to an iron ore concentrator and a copper refinery are shown. Finally, the paper studies the return on investment for a demand controller.

The trona mines in the Green River Basin, commonly known as the "trona patch," present an interesting set of rock mechanics issues stemming from mining in a unique underground environment. Like other minerals occurring in tabular deposits, trona is mined using high-productivity room-and-pillar and longwall methods. However, trona does not behave quite like other evaporites and behaves far differently than coal. In this paper, the following key issues in trona patch rock mechanics are discussed: material properties, in situ stress field, water and gas pressure effects, creep characteristics, pillar behavior, roof span stability, floor stability, underground tailings storage, longwall mining, two-seam mining. and solution mining. Many of the existing trona producers are entering potentially more difficult mining conditions, and much consideration is being given to "new" technologies such as longwall mining and solution mining. In analyzing 20 years of experience with trona patch rock mechanics issues the authors have identified key comparisons and contrasts with conventional tabular deposit rock mechanics that will help illuminate what has been learned as the trona patch enters the 21" century.

WHEN calculating the pressure-volume characteristics of projected mine-ventilat-ing circuits by orthodox methods, certain basic assumptions are required in order to employ the various available empirical data. It is assumed, for example, that the mine air is an incompressible fluid subjected to isothermal flow, an assumption suffi-ciently accurate for practical purposes since pressure and temperature differentials are small throughout the average circuit. A more erroneous assumption, however, is that all air is accounted for as it travels throughout the mine. No attempt is usually made to evaluate stopping leakage as it occurs; instead, the air volume required at the last crosscuts is assumed to enter the mine, travel the vari-ous intake air courses intact, sweep the workings and travel out by the return air courses to the point or points of exit from the mine. Actually, there is a leakage of air from intake to return at every stopping, the quantity of this leakage depending upon the tightness of the stopping and the pres-sure difference across the stopping. Unfortunately, a lack of empirical data and knowledge of the condition of individ-ual stoppings makes an exact analysis of underground stopping leakage impossible. Generally, leakage is most severe through the old stoppings outbye the circuit. These are also subjected to higher pressure differ-ences than the newer inbye stoppings. Therefore the circuit air volume diminishes at a decreasing rate progressing from out-bye to inbye the circuit.

Long-term stability, appropriate taxation and incentive policies are essential to attract and stimulate investment in the mineral sector. An outline of Ontario's $4.6 billion industry and associated tax incentives is presented. Producers are offered incentives under The Mining Tax Act, federal and provincial income tax acts for exploration and development by reducing Me after tax cost to 13-25¢ for each dollar spent. The Mining Tax Act provides generous processing incentives which have positive effects in enhancing investment and economic advantages of building processing facilities. Non-mining companies and entrepreneurial individuals can receive 25% of eligible exploration expenditures in grants/tax credits under the Ontario Mineral Exploration Program.

Cleveland-Cliffs’ Northshore Mining Company operates a magnetic iron ore (taconite) concentrator and pelletizer in Silver Bay, MN. These are two recent cost reduction projects: 1. Rougher Magnetic Separators were upgraded throughout the concentrator; throughput and recovery were simultaneously improved. 2. Green Ball Roll Screens on one agglomeration circuit were upgraded from 3.5-inch to 2.5-inch rolls. Throughput improved by 24% from 62 to 77 LTPH. Green ball size distribution improved as an added benefit.

Growing use of deionised water in surface coating techniques by w. F. LORCH Production engineers in the metal plating, paint, plastics-coating and printed circuit industries are increasingly aware of the cost of sub-standard or blemished items which have been poorly processed. An area where quality control can quickly produce higher efficiencies is in the choice of suitably purified water for making up solutions, for rinse baths and 'drag-out' baths, for cleansing lines and electrophoresis tasks, for maintaining electrolyte density and hence consistency, and for facilitating the recovery of valuable minerals. The author of this article examines the general problems of using nonpurified water, and shows how purified water has become accepted by the principal surface coating industries to improve processes and effect economies.

The high temperatures encountered in the operation of jet engines have imposed most drastic requirements upon the materials used in their construction. There are two different approaches to the materials problem connected with the design of parts in contact with high temperature gases. The first approach is to use a material which will perform satisfactorily at a temperature comparable to that of the gas. The second approach is to use a cooling system so that the material is maintained at a temperature appreciably lower than that of the gas. Besides the conventional method of cooling by means of a liquid in contact with the material exposed to a high rate of heat transfer, a less orthodox method consists of making the part to bc cooled of a porous material', so that the cooling fluid can be forced through the pores, In this scheme, the temperature of the coolant moving in a direction opposite to that of the heat flow increases gradually while passing through the porous material, and the coolant forms a protective layer on the surface exposed to heat, This method, referred to as ((sweat cooling," was pro- posed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in September 1944, and the experimental work on the preparation of porous metals was started early in 1945. The sweat cooling method opens new lines of research in powder metallurgy by extending the field of application of porous metals. The porous metals available at the present time are used mostly as bearings or filters, and a rather limited number of alloys are made for these applications. In addition, the fabrication of bearings or filters does not require a very close control of the permeability, while in the case of sweat cooling such a control is of primary importance. In designing a sweat cooled part it is imperative to assure a given rate of flow of coolant under certain conditions of Pressure drop. Generally, the Proper pressure drop and the rate of flow of coolant are deduced from heat transfer and design considerations, and consequelltl~ the Permeability of the Porous metal to be used is also determined. It is therefore necessary for the designer to have available a continuous series of porous metals covering a range of permeability as wide as possible. Contrary to the requirements established in the fabrication of filters, the actual pore size of a porous metal intended for sweat cooling is of little consequence, except for its effect on permeability. The tensile strength is likely to be of great importance for some applications. Since the tensile strength of a porous alloy decreases with increasing porosity, an important problem is to develop porous alloys having the maximum permeability with minimum porosity.

Problems associated with deposition of titanium infused chloride baths using TiCl4 as a feed material are reviewed. A potentially workable cell design using Alumdum diaphragms is discussed. Problems inherent to diaphragm-type cells are emphasized and experiments described which led to the development of a cell without a diaphragm. INVESTIGATORS assigned the problem of developing a commercial electrolytic process for making titanium metal have found that they are faced with the difficulty of overtaking rapidly improving magnesium and -sodium reduction processes. The ultimate goal must be a simple process that can be conducted with low-cost raw materials in equipment that is inexpensive to build and operate. This paper deals with some work of a preliminary nature conducted by personnel of the Research Laboratories, National Lead Co., Titanium Division. Many others have reported on the general subject of depositing titanium from fused salt electrolytes. A partial bibliography is attached. PRIMARY CONCEPTS Anyone attempting to deposit titanium metal from fused chloride electrolytes using TiC14 as a source material is faced with at least the following problems: 1) Getting the titanium into solution in the bath. 2) Controlling oxidation and reduction reactions associated with multiple valency of titanium, which result in low electrical efficiency. a) Prevention of dichloride oxidizing to trichloride and trichloride to tetrachloride at the anode. b) Prevention of trichloride from being reduced only to dichloride at the cathode. 3) Prevention of metal formation away from the cathode thru disproportionation of titanium dichloride to satisfy the equilibrium. 3 TiCl2 == 2 TiCl3 Ti [I] 4) Protection of reduced chlorides in the bath from reaction with oxygen from the bath container or air. 5) Removing from the bath the deposited metal formed without allowing it to become contaminated with oxygen or nitrogen. 6) Selecting cell materials of construction which will not contaminate the metal product or cause cell inefficiencies. EARLY EXPERIMENTS The initial attempts made to electrodeposit titanium from fused chloride baths using TiCl4 as a source material indicated that TiCl4 was essentially insoluble in molten chlorides of alkali and alkaline earth metals. If, however, the TiCl4 was introduced close to a nickel cathode some metal could be formed and appreciable quantities of reduced chlorides would be present. These reduced chlorides reacted with any oxygen present in the atmosphere above the bath and would also diffuse quickly to the anode (graphite) where they would react with chlorine and be evolved as TiCl4. The net electrolytic efficiency of such a cell is essentially nil. The TiCl4 evolves from the anode at almost the same rate that it is introduced in the vicinity of the cathode although a small amount of titanium metal can be formed on the walls of the cathodic pipe. It becomes apparent from the operation of such a cell that: metal can be deposited on the cathode, although of small particle size and a nonadherent nature, and when reduced chlorides are present in the electrolyte, TiCl4 can be absorbed, probably by the following reactions: TiCl4 + TiC12 - 2 TiCl3 [21 2 TiCl3 + 2 faradays - 2 TiC12 + C12 [31 DIAPHRAGM CELLS These facts encouraged the development of cells containing diaphragms to prevent migration of reduced chlorides from the cathode area to the anode.
