Canada is a very large country with a small population which is growing very slowly. We have great natural resources, but with our limited population we are continually looking afield for new capital to develop these resources. Our mining areas are among the most important fields offering opportunities for new capital and because of the wide-spread appeal which mining makes this industry commands a great deal of attention. While we are glad to see new capital from any source, we welcome it particularly from Great Britain, for, although we offer equal opportunities to the nationals of any country we would be glad to see the development of our natural resources financed as far as possible within the Empire. However, when we invite ne capital we must accept certain responsibilities, and while we have opportunities to offer, we should ask ourselves how these opportunities are taken advantage of and what sort of treatment the foreign investor receives.

One of the most unexpected and unusual mining disasters which have ever been recorded in the Pennsylvania anthracite region, or, in fact, in any coal-mining district, occurred in the northern anthracite field near Nanticoke, Luzerne County, about 10 o'clock on Friday morning, December 18, 1885. This accident caused the death of twenty-six persons, a larger number than had perished in any catastrophe in the anthracite mines since that which occurred at the West Pittston mine in 1871. The Nanticoke disaster resulted from a " cave-in " in the roof of a portion of the Ross coal-bed workings from Slope No. 1 of the Susquehanna Coal Company, by which a large body of quicksand, gravel, rock- and coal-boulders, and water broke through the roof of the mine, filling up a large extent of the workings, until not only the water, but also the rock material, flowed out at the mouth of the mine. Immediately over the point where the "cave-in" occurred, was located a large pile of refuse coal and slate, taken from Slope No. a. After the occurrence of the accident, I made a very careful examination of the ground in the vicinity of the "cave-in," in conjunction with a study of all the maps, sections and other mining data in the possession of the Susquehanna Coal Company, which were placed at my disposal by Manager Irving A. Stearns. The accompanying map, Fig. 1, was compiled from the Company's map, and from special maps made by the Geological Survey under the direction of my assistant, Mr. Frank A. Hill. This map shows the relative position of the mine-workings, the surface features and the "cave-in," and other points to be specially referred to hereafter. Solvent extraction of Cu from acidic leach, using an oxime extractant, e.g. LIX 984 or Acorga is a well-known and establishedprocess. As the process advances, Cu is extracted to the solvent and is replaced by H+in the aqueous phase. At high acidity the distribution coefficient of Cu between the solvent and the aqueous phase decreases, and eventually a relatively high concentration of Cu remains in the raffinate, regardless of the number of equilibrium stages. In many processes this phenomenon is immaterial, as the raffinate returns to the leaching and no copper is lost. But when the copper raffinate is used for processing of additional metals, minimal concentration of Cu in the raffinate is essential for an effective process. The recommended process includes three steps: SX-1?standard extraction of Cu with oxime. The resulting raffinate contains about 6?8 g/lCu and 50 g/lH2SO4. SX-N?Extraction of most of the acid into an amine-based solvent, and stripping it with a base, e.g. aqueous ammonia, caustic, Na2CO3etc. The extraction removes no metals, but decreases the concentration of acid from 50 to10 g/l. SX-2?Extraction of the neutralized solution once more with oxime, to remove the residual copper. Such a process enables one to get down to 100?150 ppm Cu in the final raffinate. This process was developed and tested in the R&D facility at Chambishi Metals plc, by a joint team of Chambishi & Bateman, using Cognis LIX 984N and real solutions from the plant. In the laboratory the equilibrium isotherms for SX-1, SX-2 and the neutralization were developed. Computer simulation of the results showed that the optimal configuration is two stages for both extraction and stripping for SX-1. For SX2, 2?3 stages of extraction and two stages of stripping are needed. The stripping stages may be common to both SX-1 and SX-2. The neutralization of SX1 raffinate was tested both by conventional precipitation with lime and by extraction with alamine-based solvent extraction and stripping with a solution of 10% NaOH. For the SX-N only one stage was needed for both the extraction and stripping. The bench scale pilot plant was run for both SX-1 and SX-2. The results were very similar to the simulated ones, and the configuration of 2E2S for SX-1 and 3E2S for SX 2 delivered the required raffinate with less than 150 ppm Cu.

Dump Truck Kenworth Motor Truck Corp. is beginning full scale production of its new heavy-duty, end-dump earth mover, model 801, a truck engineered for earth moving under the most adverse operating conditions. Payload capacity of the Kenworth earthmover is 30,000 lb and it is over-tired for safety, flotation and high tire life. The truck's body capacity, struck measure, is 9.9 cu yd, with heaped [ ] load at 11.9 cu yd. The earth-mover has a full anti-friction bearing mounted, power assisted steering gear, simplified controls, minimum turning radius and wide axle track to insure ease of handling, maximum maneuverability and high stability. Circle No. 1 Safety Equipment A compact, safe, and efficient valve assembly approved by the United States Bureau of Mines for use with MSA air line respirators, abrasive masks, and abrasive helmets has been developed by Mine Safety Appliances Co. The new MSA continuous air flow control valve regulates air flow from a compressed air source to an operator using respiratory protective air line equipment. Three parts-a centridge container, a cartridge and the air flow check valve-comprise the entire assembly of the control valve. A position action adjustment knob on the cartridge container regulates the amount of air flowing to the operator. The valve can be detached from the air line instantly by pressing the trigger on the cartridge container near the check valve. As the trigger detaches the hose, the spring loaded ball-type valve, which is attached to the end of the hose, automatically stops the flow of air. Circle No. 2

In decision making support system, that are used in various fields of environmental protection (environmental impact assessment, environmental management systems, setting environmental standards and regulation, etc.), it is often important to apply various mathematical environmental engineering models. The question of linking environmetal engineering modeling to decision making support system used in environmental protection is not yet methodically solved. The reasons for that could be manifold. Decison making support systems, used in environmental protection, because they are simply taken from bussines decision making, are not often adequate for specific problems raised in environmental protection. On the other hand, there are great number of types of models in environmental engineering, what urges the problem of finding the way of their proper linking with decision making support systems. The application of fuzzy logic in that field is estimated as one of possible solution of the problem.

There is no such thing as an industrial minerals industry. There are, however, many industries operating in the general field of industrial minerals. And although we use the phrase "industrial minerals industry" out of sheer convenience, the only common denominator among, say, the potash mining and processing industry, the sulphur-sulphuric acid industry and the granite industry is, in fact, that they each are exploiting an industrial mineral resource. May I quote the person whom I consider to be the reigning Mr. Industrial Minerals, Robert L. Bates, who in the 4th edition, 1975, of Industrial Minerals and Rocks states: "An industry is considered to belong to the industrial minerals field if its operations consist of extraction and processing, but not manufacturing. Thus the mining and beneficiation of feldspar is a mineral industry, but the manufacture of ceramic products is not. In the cement and lime industries, processing merges into manufacture, and the line is less distinct. It disappears altogether in a plant that extracts salt as artificial brines, and makes sodium and chlorine chemicals, all under the same roof."

IN 1945, Illinois produced 75,210,000 bid. of oil, or 4.4 percent of the total for the United States, and ranked sixth in the nation in oil production for the third consecutive year. Production decreased about 3 per cent from that of 1944, when the total Illinois production was 77,413,000 bbl. This is the smallest percentage of decrease in production in the state for any year since a peak was reached in 1940. Daily average production for 1945 was approximately 206,000 bbl. ECONOMIC recovery, which began in 1958, carried through into 1959 but was somewhat retarded by the 116-day steel strike beginning in July 1959. Recovery and economic growth increased production and consumption of mineral fuels 3 percent above 1958. The increase was accomplished despite a drop of 26 percent in coal exports. Prices remained constant during the year so that the value of production and consumption also increased 3 percent over 1958. Stocks in the hands of producers at yearend were little changed from the supply at the beginning of the year. Employment in the field of mineral fuels decreased 6.4 percent from 1958. Average hourly earnings were up 7 percent, and average hours worked were up 5 percent, with the result that weekly earnings gained 11.8 percent. Internal freight rates were relatively constant, but ocean tanker rates declined both in 1958 and 1959 from the high rates charged during the Suez crisis. The index of major input expenses decreased for anthracite, held constant for bituminous coal, and increased for petroleum. The index of labor cost per dollar of product and per ton of product declined again in 1959 to a new low in anthracite and bituminous-coal mining industries.

Regional characteristics in the coal resource base have resulted in application of different mining methods across Canada. Longwall methods predominate in eastern Canada, whereas open pit, hydraulic and room-and-pillar methods are utilized in the west. Both provincial and federal agencies have regulatory responsibilities and both also share in the development of R&D programs. This paper outlines the scale and scope of the various agencies involved with health and safety R&D in our expanding coal mining industry. Specific R&D activities in ventilation, dust control, explosion hazards, tunnel boring, strata control and truck braking, which form part of the national program, are outlined.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes the research effort and results for a computer-assisted appendage control system of a Joy 14CM continuous mining machine. The cutter head (shear), gathering head, conveyor, and stabilizer jack are the appendages. Positional control of each appendage is accomplished by specifying the desired position to the appendage control computer, which uses appendage position sensor data. Appendage movement is actuated until the desired position is attained as determined by control algorithms. A description of the sensors, mechanical and electrical interfaces, data acquisition and control (DAC) system, experimental method to determine appendage response characteristics (range of motion, start and stop delay times, and movement rates), and their application to the position control loop algorithms are presented. Also, the test results for the shear in an unloaded (free space) and loaded (cutting) condition of the shear are presented.

Fifteen alkyl cycloalkyl sulfides and three dicycloalkyl sulfides were synthesized to provide reference compounds in the search for these classes of sulfur compounds in crude oils. In synthesizing sulfides by alkaline alkylation the order in which the reactants were added was shown to determine the yield and purity of the product.

The data given herein were first included in a paper read before San Francisco Section, A.I.M.E., in October 1940, and are applicable to conditions existing until the gold-dredging industry was temporarily suspended by Order L-208 of the War Production Board in the fall of 1942. There is no doubt that gold dredging will be resumed at some future time, and on a scale equivalent to that of the recent past, but the cost data given herein will be affected to some extent by conditions existing at that time, and by labor rates and prices for materials then prevailing. Dragline vs. Bucket-line Dragline dredges should not be considered for mining large areas of low-grade placer gravel. In such deposits a dragline operator with a 5-cu. yd. dragline would be doing well to maintain an operating cost of 6¢ per cu. yd., while a bucket-line dredge with buckets no smaller than 7 cu. ft. each could be operated for less than 4¢ per cu. yd. By operating costs, I mean only field charges such as direct operating and overhead, which includes pay roll, power or fuel, repairs and maintenance, insurance, land clearing and general expenses, but not including such items as prospecting, depletion, depreciation of equipment, State Franchise Tax, or Federal Income Tax. It is not to be inferred that a dragline dredge cannot make a profit in small low-grade deposits, where the extent of a given property is too small to justify the use of the more costly bucket-line dredge. Consider small deposits of 106 gravel. It is obvious that a deposit of 5,000,000 cu. yd. of such gravel could not be mined profitably with a new 7-cu. ft, bucket-line dredge, costing upward of $250,000, and in operation costs at 4¢ per cu. yd., paying for land or royalties out of earnings; nor could a new combination 5-cu. yd. dragline and washing plant, worth upward of $125,000 and working at 6¢ Per cu. yd., make a profit. These comparisons are made because the hourly capacity of both types of dredges is nearly the same. The bucket-line dredge averages 93 per cent operating time in 24 hr., as against about 80 per cent or less for the dragline dredge. These Percentages of operating time are important factors in making a comparison of this kind- The bucket-line dredge has greater efficiency in cleaning soft bedrock, usually characteristic of dredging deposits, and a 7-cu. ft. bucket-line dredge can be efficient to a total digging depth of 80 ft- (65 ft. below water, 15 ft. above). A 5-cu. Yd. dragline dredge is limited to about 30 ft. of efficient digging depth, 5 ft. of which could be above water. In small areas of gravel not over 30 ft. deep, a 5-cu. yd. dragline dredge could make a profit where a bucket-line dredge could not do so. As an example: compare the dredging of 3,000,000 cu. yd. of 10 gravel 28 ft. deep with bucket line, costin 4¢ Per cu. yd., and with a 5-cu. yd. dragline dredge operating at 6¢ Per cu. yd. Because of small yardage, new equipment is not warranted, therefore we can assume that the dredges of both types are used equip-ment, fully depreciated. Dismantling, mov-

Bacterial oxidation of a pyrite-arsenopyrite-gold ore concentrate was carried out in .14-liter continuous-flow stirred-tank reactors (CSTR). Oxygen and carbondioxide consumption rates mineral dissolution rates, and bacterial concentrations were measured at various steady-state residence times and with 6, 11, and 16 wt.% solids in the feed slurry. A sharp optimum in biooxidation rate .was found at a residence time of approximately 40 hours for operation at each of the three pulp-densities. Biooxidation rates increased consistently. with increasing pulp density. Cell washout accompanied by negligible biooxidation rates was found to occur at a residence time of approximately 20 hours. Mineral' oxidation was found to be strongly dependent on bacterial activity. Arsenopyrite was found to be preferentially oxidized? at the higher Pulp densities.

Introduction Some uranium minerals are paramagnetic and hence are amenable to concentration by high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS). This paper describes effects of the HGMS parameters-pulp velocity, field strength, matrix loading, and magnetic field gradient-on the product recovery and grade. Unsatisfactory separation of uranium minerals by HGMS is related to ore-specific properties, such as lack of liberation, fine dissemination of uranium minerals, uniform distribution of magnetic minerals throughout the ore matrix, and interference of fine-sized slimes. Experimental techniques to identify and resolve some of these problems are outlined. HGMS of Uranium Ores The mechanism by which uranium minerals are attracted to a magnetic field is either due to its magnetic susceptibility or its association with other minerals that are magnetic. Data on magnetic susceptibility of uranium minerals are scarce. The only reported data are for uraninite at 2360 X 10-6 cm3/mole. Povarennykh (Andres, 1976) concluded that the magnetic properties of minerals depend on: • Structure of the outer electron shell in a mineral with electropositive atoms; • Valence of the atoms; • State of the chemical bonds; • Type of coordination; and • Proportion of magnetic atoms (Fe, Mn, Cr, and Ni) in the composition of the mineral. However, information on the magnetic susceptibilities of the constituent atoms of a mineral alone does not suffice for evaluating the mineral compound as a whole. Most often, uranium minerals can be beneficiated by HGMS if they are associated with other minerals that are magnetic. This appears to be a more predominant mechanism by which the uranium minerals are beneficiated. Experimental A Sala-HGMS (Malghan and Subramanian, 1981), model 10-15-20, separator was used in the experiments. The matrix material-ferromagnetic stainless steel in the form of expanded metal or steel wool-was packed into a 38-mm (1.5-in.) diameter by 360-mm (14-in.) long canister. The matrix material occupied only a 150-mm (6-in.) length. The experimental set-up and slurry flow direction are described elsewhere (lannicelli, 1976). The response of uranium ores in the HGMS was studied by feeding well-dispersed slurry at 10% solids and examining the influence of process variables on selectivity and overall uranium recovery. The chemical and mineralogical characteristics of the ores under study are presented in Table 1.

During sonic logging quality control testing of the drilled shaft foundations for the replacement bridges crossing the Broad and Chechessee Rivers for SC 170 in Beaufort County, South Carolina, irregular signals were observed on a consistent basis near the shaft top elevations. These irregular sonic signals were attributed to access tube ?debonding?, which is the separation of the access tubing from the surrounding concrete. A total of 160 drilled shafts were installed for this project, of which 41 were evaluated using sonic logging testing. Both PVC and steel access tubes were used during the project to allow for sonic logging testing. This paper details the investigation of access tube debonding with time, discusses the solutions used to minimize access tube ?debonding?, and presents the results of the sonic logging testing for the entire project. The solution selected, installation of PVC along the pile length and steel access tubing within 40 feet from the top of shaft, allowed for reliable sonic logging to effectively evaluate the upper portions of the drilled shafts.

The occurrence of twins in large ferrite crystals, made by a new process, was reported in a recent note.' This paper describes a typical case of such twinning and suggests, on the basis of the observed facts, why smooth slip-planes are rarely observed in this metal. Method of Preparation The material in which the crystals here dealt with were grown was made from 1/8in. Armco iron welding rod containing C, 0.04; S, 0.037; P, 0.003; Si, 0.008, and Mn, 0.02 per cent. This rod was cold drawn into wire about 1 mm. dia. A piece of this wire was supported vertically and was locally heated in hydrogen at atmospheric pressure to about 1400" C. by an alternating current (60 cycles per sec.) of about 35 amp., passed through it between a pair of traveling contacts about 8 cm. apart. The rate of travel for the case in hand was 12 cm. per hr. After some 30 cm. of the length of the wire had been heated and cooled in this manner the whole wire was immersed for a few seconds in dilute nitric acid, not restrained by alcohol. Etching was continued until, as nearly as could be judged by eye, the original smooth cylindrical surface of the wire was no longer capable of specular reflection. Measurements The wire in the etched state was next mounted in a goniometer of special form which allowed the measurement of the spherical coordinates of the normals to any plane surfaces left by the etching. These coordinates were most conveniently a polar distance, 8, from one direction of the wire axis, and an azimuth or longitude, ?, from an arbitrary prime meridian. The region to be described more particularly is shown at a low magnification in Fig. 1, which gives two different views, differently illuminated to show the spatial relationship of a crystal occupying most of the part shown and of an inclusion, or rather a series of three inclusions suspected of being twins based on the principal crystal.

This report, the 22d in a series, gives analytical data showing composition and quality of tipple and delivered samples of coal collected during fiscal year 1972. This coverage lists mines located in 20 States. Ultimate analyses are given for most of the coalbeds listed. Tipple samples were collected by Bureau of Mines engineers at tipples as coal was being loaded into railroad cars or trucks. The deliveries were sampled in accordance with instructions issued by the Bureau of Mines, and the samples were analyzed in the Bureau laboratory at Pittsburgh.

Uranium is a naturally occurring radioactive material in the earth?s crust. Geological processes have resulted in concentration of uranium into ore mined for its gold content in South Africa. This uranium is present in the form of discrete particles of uranium minerals, generally oxides, which are normally insoluble. Chemical and physical processes during gold mining and extraction, particularly when carried out in conjunction with uranium extraction and sulphuric acid manufacture, act on the uranium minerals and the radioactive decay products of uranium. This may result insignificant accumulations of radioactive materials in certain parts of the process. There are a number of naturally occurring radioactive materials in the earth?s crust, such as Uranium-235, Thorium-232, andPotassium-40. This paper focuses on Uranium-238, together with its decay products, and how they affect the gold mines. Water plays a significant role in the redistribution of radionuclides, both as a physical transport medium, and as a solvent in which chemical reactions take place.
