SINCE the first installation in 1936, the use of rubber-tired equipment for secondary mine haulage has increased rapidly. From August 1936 to January 1944, approximately 750 rubber-tired units were placed in operation. Of these, 650 units were installed after January 1940. During the year 1941, it per cent of the mobile loaded bituminous tonnage was hauled by rubber-tired equipment. This percentage increased to about 20 per cent during 1943. The first rubber-tired units were battery-powered tractor-trailer types. In the year 1938 the battery-powered self-contained car was introduced. In 1939, the cable-powered self-contained car made its appearance. These self-contained units are our modern "shuttle cars." By the end of 1941, approximately 15 per cent of the shuttle cars in operation were cable-powered. Installations made during 1942 and 1943 increased the proportion of cable-powered cars to about 40 per cent of the total number of shuttle cars in use. There is a marked trend toward cable-powered cars, although one need not make many trips to mines where both types are used to discover that opinions are highly controversial as to the relative advantages and field of use of each type. It is natural for mining engineers in the coal-mining industry to have diversified opinions regarding the use and application of coal-mining machinery. Coal mining is not a standardized industry; natural conditions vary from mine to mine. However, it is surprising how many operations in scattered fields arrive at the same conclusions and adopt similar methods. This happens not so much through cooperation and exchange of ideas as through hard, costly experimentation, involving months of low production and relatively high costs. What then, are the reasons for increased use of cable cars? Could it be that present scarcity of materials is forcing their use? True, battery cars require considerably more auxiliary equipment, but during 1942 it was no more difficult to obtain than shuttle-car cable. Furthermore, the trend toward cable cars started before curtailments on mining equipment took effect. Undoubtedly, cable-reel shuttle cars were introduced to produce coal at a lower cost by simplifying trackless mining through the elimination of auxiliary equipment, and by reducing the first cost on equipment. The theory of cable-powered shuttle cars is well based, as can be proved by successful operations. Many operators have weighed the advantages and disadvantages of each type carefully before choosing the type most suitable to their operation. Others have taken much for granted and accepted one or the other without much thought. At many small operations, low first cost is apt to be the deciding factor. The report shows that the southeastern (Florida, Tennessee, and North Carolina) phosphate industry is the leading domestic and world producer of phosphate rock, The report emphasizes size and organization, production capacity, transportation, and marketing of the southeastern phosphate product, Factors affecting the supply- demand relationship of the southeastern phosphate industry and world phosphate production-consumption relationships are analyzed and related to the southeastern phosphate industry. Past trends are projected and the future role of the southeastern phosphate industry is analyzed to determine its ability to supply the United States and rest-of-the-world phosphate requirements in 1985 and 2000. The projections show that southeastern resources are ample to supply domestic and export requirements at the projected rates of consumption well beyond the year 2000.

Manganese and silica in nonmagnetic tailings from the direct reduction-magnetic separation step were so closely associated that no physical concentration methods were effective. Dilute sulfuric acid dissolved manganese and iron rapidly; manganese in the form of silicates was virtually insoluble in sulfuric acid solutions, thereby governing the maximum extraction attained by leaching. Autoclave leaching at elevated temperatures and at high oxygen pressures reduced the iron extraction to less than one tenth without affecting the manganese extraction. There was an indication that autoclaving solubilized the manganese silicates appreciably. Elimination of iron from leach solutions was carried out by aerating the solution in the pH range of 6.5-7; a platinum-calomel electrode pair provided a reliable indicator for the end point of iron removal. The purified leach solutions were free of interfering impurities for the recovery of manganese as metal, dioxide, or carbonate. Manganiferous iron ores of the Cuyuna Range, Minn., are too low in iron content to be directly useful as iron ores, and too low in manganese content to be termed manganese ores. Common methods of physical beneficiation such as gravity concentration and flotation have not been successful in upgrading this material. The R-N process, when applied to manganiferous iron ores,1'2 produces sponge iron by direct reduction of iron oxides, while leaving manganese as manganous oxide. From fine grinding and magnetic separation of the reduced ore, a tailing is produced which is relatively rich in manganese and low in iron content. The nonmagnetic tailing can readily be leached with acids and then further processed to recover manganese in various forms. In this way, two processes, neither of which would be an economic solution to the Cuyuna ore problem by itself, may be combined to produce two marketable products, thereby rendering the over-all process economically more attractive. This paper will focus on the use of Deflagrating Cartridges for tunnel excavation in Midtown Manhattan at Grand Central and 42nd Street Station, where the excavation has challenges due to the proximity of existing underground infrastructure and a contract blasting restriction. Skanska and FDNY’s collaborative teamwork successfully used deflagrating cartridges and gathered vibration data to properly predict ground vibrations on nearby infrastructure. In cities like Manhattan, conventional blasting excavation methods can be constrained or restricted entirely by the risk of damage to nearby structures, utilities, and disruption to everyday life on the streets. The introduction of Deflagrating Cartridges to the project offered a promising solution to mechanical excavation being used by providing controlled, precise, and deflagrating rock breaking capabilities that minimized disturbance to the above items. This technology minimizes the risk of vibration damage to preexisting infrastructure due to its reduced velocity of deflagration, making it useful for the location of our project. The team's approach involved numerous test shots to help determine the appropriate loading and timing sequence, as well as to collect data to properly be able to predict vibration on the adjacent structures. The successful application of deflagrating cartridges in the Grand Central area demonstrates their usefulness in logistically challenging underground excavation projects in urban cities. Through careful coordination and innovative use of this technology, the team was able to navigate the complexities of working near existing infrastructure while maintaining high levels of safety and productivity. Overall, our paper will speak to the importance of new technologies like deflagrating cartridges for usage in urban environments while minimizing disruption to the world above and below, the technology of these products, and the outcomes of our vibration data collection. By embracing these advancements, construction teams, owners, and other agencies can effectively address the unique challenges posed by projects in densely populated areas, while maintaining safety and productivity.

Pyrophyllite, a hydrous aluminium silicate, is used mainly in the ceramic industry and to a lesser extent as a filler in the manufacture of paper, rubber, insecticides and baby powders. Commercial deposits of pyrophyllite in North America are restricted to the "Avalon Zone" , a belt of late Precambrian volcanic and sedimentary rocks that extends along the eastern flank of the Appalachian orogenic belt f rom Georgia to Newfoundland. The only commercial Canadian pyrophyllite deposit lies near Foxtrap on the A valon Peninsula of Newfoundland. Here, steeply dipping lenses of altered pyrophyllite rock occur in a north-trending rhyolite belt near the contact with a granitoid pluton. The altered rock is massive, light greenishyellow and contains varying proportions of pyrophyllite, sericite and quartz with lesser amounts of diaspore and traces of barite and rutile. A lteration was produced by acid solutions, either derived from or activated by the intruding pluton, at temperatures of 250° to 270°C and pressures not exceeding 2 kbr. The largest of the Foxtrap pyrophyllite lenses, discovered in 1897, was mined intermittently f rom 1903 until the early 1950s. The present owner of the mine, Newfoundland Minerals Limited, acquired the property in 1959 and ships between 27, 000 and 36,000 tonnes annually to th e company plant in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, for use in ceramic tile.

Keywords: MgO-MgR2O3 refractory, SO2-containing gases, chemical attack The reaction mechanisms occurring when MgO-MgR2O3 refractories are exposed to SO2-containing gas atmospheres were examined. The study examined the characteristic structures of magnesite-chrome, chrome-magnesite and magnesite refractories exposed to SO2-O2 gas mixture at temperatures of 700°C to 1350°C. The phase characterization was conducted with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The results show that the physical characteristics of the refractory matrix along the grain boundaries are important refractory features during chemical attack from SO2-containing gas. Upon heating in SO2-containing gas, the changes in phase-chemical compositions and accompanying grain growth causes loosening of the structure and the pore volume promotes gas diffusion. The chemical reactions that occur form stable sulfate compounds identified as MgSO4, CaSO4 and CaMg3(SO4)4, and lead to disintegration of various phase structures and consequently erosion of the refractory. In conclusion, the reaction mechanisms in MgO-MgR2O3 refractories exposed to SO2-containing gases progress through a combination of structural disintegration and chemical attack.

Using mines in Canada, Boart Longyear, a leading provider of drilling services and products, has put its Stage 3 Coring Bit to the test and each time the bit has passed the test with great success. After more than a year in the field at a major mine operation in Sudbury, Canada, the Stage3 coring bit broke life records to become recognized as the most productive design in the industry. In addition to the proven advantage seen in regular bit life increases of as much as 300 percent in some cases, the design is quickly being recognized for its cost-saving operational impact. In Sudbury, the mine operation realized actual cash savings of more than C$45,000 within an eight-month period by making the switch to Stage3 bits. For years, the Sudbury Basin team has relied on the Alpha Extended Crown bit with the Express Waterway geometry option, ordering approximately 500 units per year. This 07 COM ECEX configuration performed well in medium-hard, non-abrasive to ultra-hard, non-abrasive formations with an average bit life of 150 m (490 ft). While satisfied with the performance of the Alpha Ex-tended Crown, the team agreed to put the new Alpha Stage3 to the test. Boart Longyear?s field engineers supplied five drill sites with Alpha Stage3 bits in a 07 COM configuration. After thoroughly testing the Stage3, the results were clear. Even with the well-known performance and versatility offered by the previously preferred configuration, the Stage3 set a new standard of bit performance. The new bit maintained its cutting edge for up to three times longer than the Alpha Extended Crown, a significant performance increase when compared to the 07 COM ECEX.

Improved models continue to be produced for the major pits which Increase confidence levels required by Gold Fields management and provide the basis for more accurate long and intermediate term mine planning. Various kriging and non-kriging estimation techniques are used at Gold Fields -Chimney Creek Mine. This paper reviews the modeling histories and, current procedures used to construct these models with particular emphasis on the North Pit deposit.

This paper presents a simplified computerized method for the prediction of maximum subsidence and the subsidence profile for the Appalachian Coal Basin using the Hyperbolic Function Profile Method. Several case histories are cited to demonstrate the appropriateness of the predictive method. In addition, sample runs and a detailed listing of the computer program is provided. Other popular subsidence prediction methods are discussed and compared with the Hyperbolic Function Profile Method.

Need for a standard of ualuration.—There should be an accepted method for evaluating the different kinds of bituminous coals based on their carbon just as that for iron ores is based on iron. Variation in the classes of coals and their desirability fol the different industrial uses is analagous to the case of iron ores. The iron people have developed a standard. In the past coals have not been intelligently distributed because the public has not been informed as to its uses. Many operators have known nothing about the final disposal of the coal shipped from their mines. Sales agents and retailers have had no means of evaluating coals except to make the price as high as the market will stand. Producers and distributors need to know how much more valuable the coals would be if prepared so as to contain less objectionable material. Mr. Swectser cnlletl on the Goal and Coke Committee of the Institnte to organize a study through producers and users to develop a method scientifically and comnereially sound E. A holbrook said that the information exists but the public is unwilling to investigate. He praised Ashley's1 nomenclature of the different kind of coal which has been accepted by the Coal Mining Institute of America and recommended to the American Enginecring Standards Commitee. G. S. Rice pointed out the wider variety and distribution of consumption of coal compared to Iron ore. C'. M. Young approved Mr. Sweetser's remarks and hoped lor a research institution, probably endowed, to study utilization of coal after it comes from the ground. Mr. Sweetser cited incidents to prove his former statements. He said that a reduction of 1 per cent. ash in the coal would cut down the cost of pig iron at a blast furnace 30 c. a ton, that the coal men should tell what the iron men would have to pay to get better coal. The first step in energy conservation in any industrial plant involves implementing many of the day-to-day "housekeeping" items, such as fixing leaks, turning out lights, etc. When this step has been accomplished, additional opportunities require a detailed analysis of the energy systems, evaluation of risks and costs, and assignment of priorities. Examples of conservation schemes drawn from the experience of Du Pont's Energy Management Consulting Services will be discussed. The utility of heat balances for kilns and dryers in minerals processing will be outlined. The input needed from management for the success of conservation efforts will be discussed.

The tube bundle system is an integral part of an underground coalmine’s gas monitoring system. The maintenance of these systems is vital to ensure the quality of the data produced. Integrity testing of the tube bundle lines is required monthly, as specified in Standards Australia AS/NZ 2290.3 (1990). The various forms of integrity testing are reviewed, including pressure testing and introduction of a known gas. This paper provides a recommended and standardised methodology for those techniques where none currently exists. A strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats (SWOT) analysis is performed. The parameters considered for the SWOT analysis include resourcing required by the mines, time for the testing to be performed, and quality of the results produced. The suitability of such integrity testing protocols to be used in a mine emergency situation is also evaluated.CITATION:Forrester, L, 2017. "Breakwater Tunisia S.A.’s Bougrine mine is located in a semi-arid region of Tunisia characterized with Triassic salt domes. Due to extensive agricultural land-use in the mine area, a zero-discharge tailings facility design and high water recycling rates to the concentrator were chosen to minimize the environmental impact to the surrounding area. The process water supply has an accumulation of naturally occurring salts due to high evaporation rates and the need to recycle 70% of the process water. The elevated salt content of the process water had an adverse effect on the efficiency of the flotation reagents, which led to the production of lower quality zinc concentrate.The impact of the water salinity on the zinc concentrate quality was documented by extensive laboratory testing. A feasibility study was prepared and a decision was made to install a reverse osmosis plant for desalination of the process water. A plant was constructed during 2000 which currently supplies up to 85 m3/hr of de-mineralized water, equal to approximately 45% of the total process water requirement. The salinity of the process water decreased from about ten to twelve grams per litre before installation to less than three grams per litre. Together with minor modifications to the concentrator circuit, Breakwater Tunisia has increased the zinc concentrate grade from 50% zinc to 55% zinc without compromising the zinc recovery rate of approximately 84%.This paper discusses the successful installation of a reverse osmosis desalination plant that allowed Breakwater Tunisia to improve the grade of the Bougrine mine zinc concentrate and thus increase the net smelter return.INTRODUCTIONBreakwater Resources Ltd., through a wholly owned subsidiary, Breakwater Tunisia S.A., acquired the Bougrine underground mine and related assets in September 1997. During the winter of 1997/1998, the company rehabilitated the mining equipment, modified the concentrator circuit, developed a new mine ventilation system and prepared a new mining production program. The mine was reopened on May 2, 1998 and was in commercial production as of June 1, 1998."

This paper details a study conducted in Canada on the use of a drill with two different types of elastomer-covered handles in place of the standard steel handles. One type of handle was covered with a relatively stiff elastomer with a durometer of 70 (referred to as the plastic handle), and the other was covered with a more compliant elastomer with a durometer of 56 (refered to as the rubber handle). It was found that, compared with the steel handle, the overall acceleration at the interface between the plastic handle and the drill operator's hand was 2,5 times less, and that between the rubber handle and his hand was 3 times less. This reduction occurred predominantly in the frequency range above 500 Hz, and was greater with increasing frequency. However, an analysis based on the methodology of an international standard (which places greater importance on low-frequency vibration), indicated that the reduction in vibration levels was minimal. ~he driller himself felt that operation with the plastic and rubber handles was more comfortable, the rubber handle being preferred.

In my opinion, the concentration of minerals by flotation is the most interesting problem in ore-dressing, and will command eventually far more consideration than it has at present. For many ores it furnishes a complete method of concentration absolutely independent of specific gravity, and thus simplifies the milling of many difficult combinations. Not having to recognize the influence of specific gravity, we are also able to dispense with some of the complications resulting from classifying-conditions. Where flotation cannot be used for a complete separation of the minerals from the gangue, it will be found, in nearly all cases, to save those portions which are generally lost by reason of their fine state of division. For this reason, it should be looked upon mainly as an aid to general concentration, although there are many ores so well adapted to flotation that more than 90 per cent. of the valuable metals can be recovered from them in one operation by this process. In presenting the results of my investigations in flotation, I have endeavored to theorize as little as possible. That side of the subject has been extensively discussed by others. My earliest work with flotation was done in 1895, when I used various oils, grease, soap, etc., with results that were remarkable. I did not realize then that with water alone equally good separations could be made. Up to 1906, my endeavors were confined to attempts to keep the concentrates on the tables well wetted and away from exposure to the air. In common with others, I observed that when there mas any obstruction in the wash-water on the table of sufficient size to divert the water to either side, the concentrates collected, and, on exposure to the air, would promptly float away. The manufacturing industry reinvented its approach to the manufacturing process by managing and measuring it end-to-end. This improved returns on production assets, improved information quality and reduced delivery time, resulting in larger net profits through cost reduction and improved cash flow. Today this approach is standard in the manufacturing industry. Resource development has many requirements in common with the manufacturing production line. These include: control of the various steps, transparency of the state of the process to various levels of the organisation and the overall efficiency with which the process is executed. The authors argue that the introduction of manufacturing execution systems (MES) concepts and technologies to resource development processes will lead to similar improvements in control, transparency and efficiency and could improve profitability and enable staff to work more effectively and make better decisions.

Natural Gas has been available in New Zealand for twenty years. During that time the gas share of the energy market has grown and now natural gas forms a significant part of New Zealand's energy scene, helping consumers to achieve a higher standard of living, and reducing dependence upon imported oil.Natural gas is now used for petrochemical manufacture and power generation in addition to direct supply to consumers.As concern for the environment continues to build, natural gas will have an increasingly important role to fill in these markets. This paper sets out the background to the development of natural gas in New Zealand and identifies the current markets. It then looks at those matters which are likely to influence the role of natural gas in the 1990s.

The continuous balling? operation whereby a moist particulate mass is tumbled in a horizontal revolving drum with recirculation of the undersize product can be extremely unstable. Product and recycle rates are subject to wide fluctuations. Although the problem seems to be well-recognized, there is little published information or quantitative data readily available, especially in relation to industrial-scale circuits. Probably the best available published results are in the Russian literature, an illustration of which is given in Figure 1. These data, taken from a study') of some of the factors which influence the stabilization of the pelletizing process, illustrate the wide variations in circulating load and circuit productivity which may be encountered over a period of operation. The problems of balling circuit stability may be traced to random seed or nuclei generation and uncontrolled agglomerate growth. The situation is analogous to that in crystallization processes where (4 considerable attention is given to nucleation control.
